Default DADA Lesson One - Do It For The Vine

On a bright but cool morning of the first of October, you might find yourself walking towards the first floor for yet another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. Anyone who is used to Hirsch's style might know what to expect and what not to expect: no chairs, no desks and certainly nothing that looks like it belongs to a normal classroom.

The classroom itself is bright, well-lit and looking a little larger than normal. But there's also a nature theme emerging in the room: instead of stepping on a stone floor like the corridor outside, you find yourself stepping on a grassy area. In fact, every inch of the floor seems to be covered in grass with only a bunch of large cushions standing out.

What's even more curious is the collection of rocks that has made a return from a lesson on trolls the previous year. These rocks, lined up against one side of the room, seem to vary in box size and texture, with some covered in greenery and others looking as smooth as the pebbles you find at the beach. The only other object that stands out against the grass is a large wooden box, sitting near the front of the room. Every now and then, the box would wriggle, as if the thing(s) inside are trying to get out.

Curious? You might be.

Standing next to the box and leaning against the wall is none other than Professor Hirsch himself. Cool, collected and casual, the Defence Professor has his arms crossed against his chest and his legs crossed at the ankles and definitely ignoring the wriggling the box is making.

So come in, make yourselves comfortable and try not to find out what's inside the box while you wait for the lesson to start.

class progression:
- In what kind of situation would it be considered wrong to start attacking creatures?
- Why is the Ensnarement Charm more acceptable than Incarcerous?
- MINI ACTIVITY: Use the Ensnarement Charm to make vines grow from the grass and/or the rocks
- MAIN ACTIVITY: Use the Ensnarement Charm to keep the gnomes rooted

OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Class will continue tomorrow (eveningtime GMT+1) Hope you have fun! Class has already started but you're more than welcome to jump in, if you haven't done so already! Simply pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time ^^

He glanced to the professor, surprised that there was only five minutes left before the activity. He'd barely gotten a piece of grass to even move. Ten minutes wasn't enough. A little disgruntled, Ryder sat back down on his cushion to try again. Time was running short and he may as well be comfortable when doing this. "Irretio!" he said, using the same movements as before, staring at the grass closely. "Irretio!" STARE. "Irretio!" Staaaaare.

Squint.

Lean closer.

Squint more.

"Irretio," he said a few inches from the grass, moving his wand counter-clockwise and flicking it upwards. The grass twitched for half a second. He sat up straight, eyes widened and hands squeezed into fists, waiting for it to do something else. HE MADE THE GRASS TWITCH. Though... possibly just because he breathed on it. Still nothing.

OKAY GRASS. Katy pointed her wand at it again, this time with ferocious intensity. If anything, she was a Toussaint, and they were known to be excessively intense. Excessively. In her mind, she pictured a vine emerging from the ground, strong and healthy and ready to wrap around some creature's leg and keep it from eating her.

She flicked her wand upward. "Irretio." There it was. Her vine. A seeking nub of vine, curling up in search of the sun. Or magic, she supposed, since she flicked her wand again, and it curled toward her. Oh, perfect.

Oh, NO. Maybe her mental image was too strong, since the vine quickly wrapped around her leg and twined upward toward her knee. Okay, thanks, time to stop vine. Time to STOP. "Um, professor?"

The incantation had started rolling off Vivian's tongue smoothly after a few attempts and practices. Once she was contented, she gave the wand movement another try, and tried both the incantation and movement together to see if they coordinated. Honestly, the blond didn't really like practicing for most parts but she just wanted to step up her game this term for OWLs.

A few practices later, the prefect felt more confident. Not as confident as actually casting Incarcerous, but it was worth giving it a try. Vivian turned to face the grass and the rocks near her. Perhaps, she'd try with the grass first before getting to ambitious. Baby steps, she can hear her mum say. Focusing on a certain patch of grass, the blond pointed her wand at it and took a breath. Yes, she was dramatic enough to do so. "Irretio," Vivian said with a clockwise motion on the grass, then a flick upwards.

The vines, indeed, grew... which rendered a smile from this Fairfield. But that's all it did, just go. Ah well, it was just the first try.

Okay.

Harriet had though that she had practised the wand movement enough, and she was feeling pretty confident that she had gotten it. She was sure that once paired with the incantation that she would be able to do the spell. But first she needed to practice saying the spell.

She held her wand by her side before she started to practice the spell. "Ee-reh-tee-oh" She said a couple of times, trying to get the pronunciation just perfect. She wanted to make sure she was saying it right. If she didn't say it right she would have no chance at trying to get the spell to work. She spent the next few minutes perfecting how she was saying the spell, until she felt confident with it.

Now to pair them both together.

Carefully, she moved her wand in a circular movement over the bit of rock, and then flicked her wand, whilst saying the incantation "Irretio" Then she hoped something would happen.

"Oooh. Yay!" She said for a few vines had began to grow. Not bad for a first try! Now to keep going, so she did.

If at first you don't succeed...

Rhea tried again, ignoring the part of herself that was saying she wasn't good enough and that she'd never get to where she was supposed to be ability-wise. Concentrate, Durant. Jeez. The wand movement was a circular motion followed by a flick towards target. Simple. "Irretio," she muttered the incantation. Aaaaand... nothing happened. This time not even a slither of a vine appeared.

The negative thoughts crept in again. They'd probably never left.

Stop that, brain.

It was strange... She knew that what was holding her back was herself. But even with that knowledge, there didn't seem to be anything she could do about it.

Rhea kept persevering, though, determined to at least be successful on the grassy area, and after several more failed attempts, she got a satisfactory result. "Irretio!" The vines grew and grew and didn't shrink back like they'd done during previous attempts. She grinned proudly and her eyes wandered over to a rocky area. Should she try on there now...? Professor Hirsch had said that he wanted fifth years and up to do that. And there was only five minutes left. She might as well try.

Here goes nothing...

Now she had succeed the ensnarement charm, this time Ava was ready to practice it non-verbally. But probably it would be better if she tried it on a grassy area first. The Gryffindor then moved her position, found another place where there were more grass than her spot before. She took a deep breath, cleared her mind from any distracting things and focused on the ensnarement charm. Just like what Noelle had taught her about casting a charm in non-verbal way, the key is concentration and intent.

Okay, let's try casting the charm.

Ava thought about growing the vines out from the grassy area, then she made a clockwise circular motion with her wand over the area and flicked upwards. Unfortunately there was no vine growing out, sighs. Perhaps her intent was not enough to cast this charm non-verbally. She tried casting it again, this time her intent was going stronger in order to succeed the charm. Ava drew a circle in clockwise motion with her wand around the grass, then made an upward flick. This time... still not succeed.

Sighs.

But she hadn't given up. The third time she tried, Ava didn't think about anything but growing the vine out from the grass. Again she repeated the wand movement, put on her concentration and intent in 200% mode until there was a small vine growing out from the area. Oh, finally. She kept practicing it until the vine grew stronger to strangle the creatures or whatever they were going to do next.

But could the creature died from this vine strangle if they aim it on its neck? Hopefully not.

Maddie had done a quick run-through of the incantation and wand movement, and now she thought she might be able to handle an actual attempt. "Professor! What if I accidentally trap myself in the vines? Has anybody ever done that before? How did they get out? Do YOUUUUU know how to get people out?" she asked. She was full of questions. Nevertheless, she bounded over to a patch of grass and readied her wand.

"Irretio!" she called out. "IRRRRRRRRRETIO!" Did the spell work when you included that many R's? She was about to find out! Maddie moved her wand in a clockwise circular motion around the patch of grass she'd chosen. She followed that with an upward flick. Nothing happened, but she wasn't sure it should be happening. "Is something supposed to happen now?" she asked aloud. Where had she gone wrong? She had a feeling if there was a real creature here, she'd be toast.

Well this was pleasing. Aymeric was fond of the idea of behaving ethically towards creatures. At the end of the day, most of the times, humans were guests at their environment. Using vines in order to save ourselves the Ravenclaw considered as not a bad idea.

Standing near a patch of grass. He mumbled to himself the incantation several times and practiced the wand movement. "Okay, focus," Aymeric whispered to himself. Even though he was young, he considered himself quite good at wand work.

"Irretio," he said with confidence, the third with his wand performed a clockwise drawn circle at the grass and sharply flicked his wand upwards towards the direction he wanted the vines to grow. Only a meter away from where he drew the circle.

Hmmm... was that a leave and maybe a stem growing out of grass or were they there before he attempted the spell? Either way, this spell was for growing vines not shrubs. Sigh, no one promised this would be easy, but he did feel ever so slightly disappointed.

Kei finds himself watching everyone first before trying the exercise for himself. He murmurs the incantation under his breath like a small chant: "Irretio...irretio...irretio..."

Oh!! The hand movements too, that's right!! Kei smacks his forehead for forgetting, and takes a moment to recall the professor's voice in his head - clockwise motion from where they originate from, yeah?

He furrows his brows and pouts a little, tongue peeking out from his lips in concentration and he tries.

"IRRETIO!"

Words, concentration, hand movement... oh!!!!!! There's tiny vines!!!!

And in a moment, as he gets excited, they're gone, of course...but he made them!

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Not convinced she needed to keep casting in circles, Jessa ended the incantation and moved to practising it with the second wand movement. Flicking upward in the direction she wanted it going. Right. That couldn't have been so hard too.

The Ravenclaw took a moment to get her focus centred again. Allowing herself to be too put out by this would only mess with her ability to cast and make her look as incompetent as Professor Hirsch surely thought she was. Even after that moment, she found herself still muttering her disbelief....which.....meant another needed to be taken. Uuuuugggghhhhh and with only 5 minutes left!

Brilliant.

"Irretio!" She flicked her wand to her left, seeing the vines sprout from the ground and spring off in that direction. In truth, it wasn't a particularly hard spell for her. Charms and Transfiguration were her best subjects. Wandwork had never been an issue for her. It helped that her wand was a little overeager and liked to go ahead and cast even without her say sometimes. Always willing to grasp a new spell. It was as keen as she was about knowledge acquisition.

It wanted to know just as much as she did. "Irretio." Another vine set off into the distance. Stupid grass.

He'd meant to just tell Hirsch at the beginning of the lesson that there was no need for him to stay and observe because he knew exactly what he would be writing down in regards to the audit.

However... Noah had managed to find somewhere comfortable to sit and think with his eyes closed. So he'd missed all the fun™ that Hirsch had for the children - used loosely here as Noah didn't actually see them as students since they were all slow and severely behind on everything (what were they even teaching them???) - and was grateful for it because had he been watching, he would've had to write more things and he just didn't have the time for that. It wasn't the noise of the miniature idiots roaming about trying to cast that insidious spell that Hirsch had given them to practice that woke him up, but his own snoring.

Noah jolted awake, eyes barely open but the noise around him had forced the sleepiness away. Rowena be a fence. Blinking several times, the man looked around, narrowing his eyes at everyone and everything. Was the lesson still going on? With a long, cat-like yawn, he stretched his arms over his head and then proceeded to look at the blank form on his lap. He began talking to himself, murming things here and there and watched, absently, as his quill went to work, jotting down his thoughts on the margins - the man was anything but conventional - of the form. He stopped only when he witnessed one child in particular fail to enunciate the spell properly. With a long and very dramatic sigh, Noah pinched the bridge of his nose and began writing again.

SPOILER!!: some observations
  1. the small children need the classwork modified for them; clearly the school values babying the "students" more than challenging them.
  2. a lot of unnecessary chatter and talking - most of it coming from Hirsch.
  3. zero structure. amazing.
  4. clearly the school prefers to hire models™ than actual qualified professors. must speak to the HM about that.
  5. the lesson has absolutely no relevance; no wonder Ilvermorny won the IMPS. shame.
  6. time wasted on a pointless activity on a ridiculous spell that wouldn't help the children out in real world if they were faced with an aggressive creature.

If he was completely honest with himself, he did not like the idea of being observed. It was the fact that there was going to be someone here, someone with absolutely zero experience or qualifications on the matter, telling him how he should be doing his job. Someone who could be putting his career on the line.

And someone who, if that snore was anything to go by, wasn't even paying attention to the lesson as it is.

Hirsch looked up from Abey and gave the man a look. If he would rather be somewhere else catching up on his sleep, the man was more than welcome to leave and explain this to Regina afterwards. He watched him scribble something down for a few seconds before frowning and turning over to the next student. If saying something would jeopardise his career then staying silent might just be better. Besides, he......

They were moving on to the activity, but her mind was still stuck on ropes vs. vines. Her hand shot into the air as everyone else was going to practice the spell. "Are there legal penalties, professor, for using ropes instead of the Ensnarement Charm?"

Because that would be very useful to know in her opinion. Of course the idea of going to jail for using ropes seemed highly absurd to her.

........ had a question.

Legal penalties? "Some, but I don't think it's something you get sent to Azkaban for. At least, not for long periods of time. You might get fined for endangering and potentially injuring an already endangered species, even if they were being aggressive. I don't think anyone wants that on their head." It was much better not to face that potential.

Did that answer her question?

She kept her wand down at her side while she felt the incantation in her mouth. He wanted them to try it non-verbally, but Katy had never yet had success with a non-verbal before mastering it verbally. Irretio. Irretio. Pretty easy. Right?

Where was there some grass? Katy spotted a particularly lush patch, and she pointed her wand at it. "Irretio", followed by a flick of her wand upward. And... was that a vine? She stooped to poke at the grass with her wand. Maybe? She'd try again, and this time she was GOING TO SEE GREEN.

And here was another good question and one that, on second thought, he couldn't answer properly without giving something away.

"Yes, the more natural the environment the better. It does mean that you'll have to put in more concentration and more power behind your spell than you would in a normal environment with a lot of grass around you." Pause. "But considering what the main activity entails, you....... might find it better to be in a classroom itself. We don't want them running amock." Something that would make sense once they've moved on.

For the practicing thing, Abey wanted to stay as far out of everyone else's way as possible, but doing that meant moving as close to the wall as possible. While, logically, that was the best thing especially what with being so aNXiOuS, all those thoughts about vines and tendrils and tying up meant that Abey actually wanted to stay as far away from the walls as he possibly could... which would put him in the middle of everyone else...

In the end, he decided that, actually, where he already stood would probably be best. That way he didn't have to move closer to either scary thing, and the fact that HIRSCH had chosen this spot to call him over to in order to talk to him meant that it was more than likely a reasonably safe place to stand, because Hirsch was SMART and wouldn't have a conversation in a place where he could get hit by a stray spell if he could help it... right?

So, staying where he was, Abey got his wand out, managing to shoot a glance back to Junia and smiling at her to let her know he was okay and not sad and also - if he could convey as much in a smile - that he didn't have to worry about practicing a spell that was all about trapping things and tying them up and trapping them.

SPEAKING OF SPELLS, Abey already KNEW what he wanted to practice. THE SHIELD CHARM! He knew actually that it was actually a fourth year spell, technically, and that he was only at the start of his third year, but he had REALLY wanted to learn it for duelling reasons and real life reasons, and he REALLY believed he could do it... and so had already started working on it in recent weeks. Also, he was only a year away from officially being the recommended FOURTH year age, and that was close enough, really. ALSO, Harry Potter had learned to do a Patronus Charm when HE was a third ye-gAAAAASSSSSPPPPPP. MAYBE ABEY COULD LEARN THAT TOO!

... Maybe... maybe just one thing at a time though. And maybe it was better to ask Hirsch about that in private, later.

Shield Charm then. Yes. Keeping one eye on the others in the classroom because that other spell was making him more than a little nervous - which was a strange feeling because at the same time he felt tired and drained - Abey raised his wand.

"Protego."

The spell came out as a whisper, a word spoken to himself, almost, like he was worried of calling any more attention to himself by obviously casting another spell. That, combined with his initial uncertainty, naturally meant that the spell bore no magic. Abey glanced around him, just chECKING THINGS, then focused on what he was doing and tried the spell again, a little louder and a touch more confident this time. "Protego..."

That smile was something he was going to take as a good sign, especially the one after his Unforgivables comment. Though, as time passed, something that made his smile widen was to see exactly what spell the third year had decided to practice today. The Shield Charm, though a spell that was just a tiny bit more advanced for the boy's year, was still a good spell to have at your arsenal.

So, while he was watching the rest of the class practice the spell set out for them, he also glanced at Abey to see what results he could attain from the spell. That whisper though? If he hadn't seen the boy's mouth move, he would have almost thought that the boy was jumping the wand and heading straight for casting nonverbally instead. Gryffindors, you know? But when nothing happened he watched the second attempt and silently wondered whether..... he should.....

"Nice attempts, Abey, but try it with a bit more power behind your voice. As if you own the spell. The Shield Charm is the best spell you can use for self-defence and you want the best, most protective shield at your side. After all, if you're in a dangerous situation, it's better to overshoot than undershoot." Was he catching his drift? "Call me if you want me to test your shield charm." Smile.

But she hadn't even heard it over the roaring in her ears, which didn't stop until the creature's head poked out and Professor Hirsch was closing it up again. The motion made the twelve-year-old girl blink in confusion; she felt kinda like she'd been watching herself run over and try to unlock the box from outside her body, which was SCARY. Or like she'd fallen asleep or something; she KNEW better than to try to let an unknown, possibly Dark creature out in a room full of people. She knew that. And she didn't understand why she had done it, not when she hadn't been aware of deciding to do it.

The Gryffindor trudged over to Professor Hirsch, her face slowly heating up in shame and embarrassment until her face probably looked like a tomato. She gulped before answering him quietly: "I--I'm okay. I'm sorry, sir. I dunno what happened. I didn't mean to." Not that she thought any adult, except maybe Cami, was likely to believe her on that. She shook her head when the professor asked if she wanted to sit part of the lesson out. She wasn't weak; she could handle learning to trip Dark creatures, which was probably a better alternative to loads of other spells that wizards could use to stop the creatures. A small smile broke over her face as she heard the last part of the professor's answer and nodded again. "Okay... Sorry again." Annnd then she was turning around and walking purposefully to an empty area of grass.

She realllly hoped that no one had noticed that whole thing, that they were too busy with their own spell practice, but she sort of thought that was probably too much to hope for. So Emmeline kept her eyes focused firmly on the ground until she'd reached a grassy area that was well away from her classmates. She didn't dare look up as she raised her wand, spun it in a circle like a clock, then flicked it up a bit and muttered, "Irretio!" Unsurprisingly, nothing happened. She never got a new spell right on the first try, but today she was still feeling all ashamed of herself and not really concentrating all that well. Which was NOT good, 'cause Professor Hirsch had said that this spell required loads of concentration. And it was a fifth year one, too. She was kinda doomed, mhm.

That didn't stop Emmeline from trying, though, even if part of her mind was still somewhere else. She sounded out the spell several times before she was ready to try it again. This time, she definitely managed to think about vines and how much she wanted to conjure them; she wanted to do okay in the rest of the lesson, since she'd botched things up so much already. She spun her wand in a clockwise circle again, flicked it up and at the last minute, and said: "Irretio!" No vines appeared, but she thought that maybe some of the grass had rustled a little bit. Maybe.

The second year repeated her attempt for another TEN times before finally, finally, some weak, insubstantial-looking vines appeared out of the grass. Emmeline loosed a breath in relief when she heard the professor's five minute warning. These vines didn't look strong enough to trip or restrain ANYTHING, but it was better than nothing. It meant she could sort of do the spell, right?

The Gryffindor had an odd expression on her face, did she know? Hirsch couldn't quite make out what it was but..... it was there.

He furrowed his eyebrows and watched her carefully as she trudged her way towards him. The redness of her face, that look..... it was all noted but logic told him that it was better to not mention anything at all. At least, not now when she was..... apologising? "That's fine, it happens to the best of us." Not to mention that nothing had even happened in terms of whatever was in the box, and no one was injured or hurt in any way. "As long as you're okay."

And no, he wasn't going to mention that he was watching out either. Instead, he glanced down at his watched and called out, "Just under two minutes left, everyone!" And then they could move onto the main part of the lesson where they'll put the spell to the te-

And then this happened.

If he was completely honest with himself, he probably should've seen it coming. Miss Toussaint's spellwork wasn't exactly weak, was it? But even as he watched, and he knew in the back of his mind that it wouldn't be too hurtful to the students, he couldn't help but feel his heart rate quicken at this sight in front of him.

Er. This was not good.

The man rushed over as quickly as his long frame could take him and bent down near her feet. It wasn't the time to be proud of her spellwork and it wasn't the time to say anything because right now, even while looking as calm as he could, the scene seemed to look a lot worse, simply because there was a student involved. "It's okay, you're okay....." The wand was out and he carefully cut the vine from the ground itself to stop its source of growth. And then, because Diffindo so close to a body part was asking for trouble, he clamped his wand between his teeth and started using both hands to start loosening the vines themselves. "Try and see if you can get your legs out now, Katy."

Irretio. Irretio. Irretio. Concertrate.

Those four words were repeated in Aymeric's head. He was slightly disappointed from the fact he couldn't perform the spell at his first attempt. He always though very highly of his wand work.

Second attempt.

Irretio. Irretio. Irretio. Concertrate.

He pointed his wand at the grass - focusing his eyes at the point he wanted the vines to be grown from. He was feeling confident to the bone. " Deep breathe, and relax," he thought to himself. He took a deep breathe, and said "Irretio!" He moved his wand in circular-clockwise formation and sharply flicked his wand to a meter right from him.

Three strong vines sprouted out of the grass exactly where he wanted them to grow. Ha. Pride and flee filled the Ravenclaw. He knew he could perform the spell. After a few moments the vines retreated to spot they grew from as if they never were.

Dare he try the spell on a rock?

Henry was fairly eager to practice this new spell, even if his eyes kept drifting towards the box that seemed to have something desperately trying to escape. And of course his attention was drawn to it again when Emmeline magically opened it and he was sure he got a glimpse of something. It was a good thing that he trusted Hirsch to keep them out of real danger because the very nature of the subject certainly had its potential.

Being a NEWT-level student, Henry did intend on trying the spell non-verbally too. He had been getting better at those, though he wasn't sure he could manage the concentration needed while in a full classroom, at least not at first. He headed over to the rocks though as he wanted to get right to it rather than start at the grass first.

Once there, he took a moment to close his eyes and concentrate. It was really difficult to tune out all the voices calling out incantations in the classroom, but he tried some of the techniques he used to focus on nonverbals - not that he'd start out doing those yet. But it might help with the concentration. He spoke the words in his head a few times before opening his eyes and casting the spell onto the ground.

"Irretio!" He pictured the vines as he cast and, while they were not quite as large as he pictured, there were definitely small green shoots sprouting up from the rocks as he flicked upward. Not bad for a first try, he guessed. But they needed to be better before he'd attempt the spell nonverbally and he paused to concentrate again.

Default Post 1 - The spell, Katy and Hirsch :D
Toto * RotiSila * ToRo * Braveheart * Grandma & Mama Tori

Remy was listening avidly, and taking down some notes that he would likely need to rewrite and expand on at a future date… but right now, he was busy listening to all of the ideas that were being thrown around the room. It was amazing when the class was so enthusiastic about learning - after all, there were the theory classes where everyone wanted the hour (or two) to be over before they even too their seats… but no, not this time. This time, the energy and suggestions were flowing - which only helped to fuel more answers and questions. Wasn’t it amazing?

Grinning as they finally got to find out the spell itself, the seventh year murmured the spell under his breathe as he moved to an area that had grass and rocks. What? He wanted to try both to see the difference. After all, the spell would likely work differently in different environments, that was why Professor Hirsch told them it would work in so many locations. See, it was all a matter of trying a spell in different areas. Or that was his theory anyway - surely this would be easier in a forest of open field… but then you have nowhere to run or hide in an open field… Okay, hoping that never happened.

Twirling his wand around his fingers, he said the spell one last time, before nodding to himself. Okay, lets try this. ”Irretio!” He said, moving his wand in a clockwise motion over the grass, while picturing vines growing out of the grass. He ignored everyone else in the classroom, ignored any drama or fighting or conversations, instead focusing all of his attention on the thought and need for there to be vines, right here right now. Then he motioned for the vines to grow in a straight line upwards with his wand, seemed easiest right now; he didn’t want to attack anyone else if his vines didn’t do what he thought they would. However, as he watched the grass twist and turn and merge and morph, he saw a vine grow out of the ground, green and soft and insistantly moving upwards. Cool! However, as soon as he became curious about the texture and went to bend down to inspect it - it stopped growing.

Whoops, concentration broken.

Before he could stand back up and try again however, he heard a familiar voice - one of the Sixth year Slytherin’s, Katy - calling out for the Professor. ”Oh no, stay still…” Remy was two steps towards her when Hirsch fell to his knees to cut the vine. Honestly, he was glad- he wasn’t really sure what he was going to do to stop the vine from creeping further up the girl’s leg - but he would have done … something. Yup, he would have.

Since he had spoken to her, he moved over to her and held a hand out for her to use for support as she tried to move her leg and wriggly free of the vines. ”Feeling okay? It didn’t hurt your leg?” Whoops, maybe should have let Professor Hirsch ask that - but it wasn’t like the man didn’t know about his work with Professor Reed or his aspirations to be a Healer. Eh. It would be fine. Hopefully.

This was an answer he liked hearing very much.

"Constant vigilance!" he said, a wide smile spreading across his face, "Be vigilant, assess and then act accordingly, whether that's defending yourself or leaving the creature alone. Well done, Miss Diggory!" Maybe he shouldn't have been worried about the initial silence in the first place.

Something else he was glad about was the mention of the material used and possible rug-burn that the creature could receive from the use of ropes instead of vines. "Exactly! Rug-burn isn't a nice feeling and might be more sensitive to the creatures you decide to bind with ropes." There was no way for them to know how the creature felt, of course, but it was a possibility. "You're right about it causing more harm as well. Well done!"

Hirsch tilted his head at this answer. From observing her answers, something told him that there was a lot of potential in this young Hufflepuff. Nothing he was going to say out loud, of course, especially if it gave her extra, unnecessary pressure but..... potential. It was there.

"You're completely right. The vines, being something from the creatures' own environment, is likely to make it feel calmer than ropes would. Ropes could frighten it to do something much worse, whether it's to itself or to its surroundings. Very well done, Miss Marin."

Zoryn Spinnet was full of surprises, it seemed.

Never, in all his life, would he have guessed that she cared about littering. Dragons, sure, but littering?

"I can't argue that point, and that could be why the Ministry says it's more reasonable to use than ropes. They're grown, rather than conjured, so it seems as though they're coming from the environment itself." Did that make sense? "So yes, that could be a reason why the Ministry says to use them. Well done!"

"A short, simple and straight to the point answer," he said, nodding his head, "You're right: vines, a natural object, are less likely to hurt a creature than ropes, something more man-made. We don't know how a creature is going to react to the use of ropes against it so vines are more acceptable, for everyone's safety. Well done!" Smile.

Being someone who ran in the mornings as well, Hirsch knew all about the feeling that Remy was describing. "Nothing like watching the sun rise while you're out on a morning jog." It was a nice feeling, wasn't it? And the view of the grounds basked in the sunrise was nice to see as well. A great way to start off the day, in his opinion.

But, the lesson and the answer to his question. "A very good point. They, probably, won't feel as restricted in them and that's why the Ministry says it's more acceptable. Excellent mention of the damage that could be caused by the use of ropes and other objects that the creature probably isn't used to. Well done!"

'Is it so the Ministry can remain politically correct in the eyes of the state, Professor?'

Hirsch tried his hardest not to laugh. Really. But nothing could stop him from covering his face with his hands while his shoulders shook with laughter. What a question. And not one he expected in response to his question.

Looking up again, he smiled at the Ravenclaw and said, "I wouldn't be surprised if that was the underlying reason. Well done."

Ah, the mention of greenery. he was glad that the students were grasping this idea because it was important in understanding the basis of the spell itself. "Exactly!" he said, giving her a nod of his head. "It would be less likely to scare them than if you use ropes, which might not be something they're used to. That is exactly what I was after, well done!"

......... Well well well.

Hirsch glanced between Junia and Jessa, eyebrows raised but a hint of a smile on his face. "I hope you two band together one day to sort out the justice system." Really. If they could see this at fourteen and fifteen, Merlin knows what they'd be like as fully fledged adults. Although, they could still take this up with the Ministry but some adults barely listened to the opinions of the underage, unfortunately, or liked to disregard it.

"You are very, very right and I applaud the two of you for bringing up this flaw. I'm glad you've mentioned the part about fight or flight and that it's not fair on the creature who would have its movements restricted. Maybe this is something the Ministry will look towards rectifying. Well done!"

"The Ensnarement Charm? No. Incarcerous? Yes." It was not fun to have it used against you, that was for sure. "That's an excellent point, Miss Toussaint. You could cause serious harm to a creature simply by not paying enough attention or not having practiced the spell well enough. The Ensnarement Charm is seen to be safer because it's less likely to cause burning or discomfort to the creature. Well done!"

Now this was a good question. "That depends on your level of concentration. A spell like this requires constant concentration and a strong spell-casting or proficiency with the spell. A good mix of both and you could have your vines growing in a matter of seconds. Lack any of them, especially concentration, and your vines might be weak or stop growing altogether." Which would be a shame if they were in serious danger. "You will also need more concentration to produce stronger vines in the case of larger creatures who have more resistance to magic. You could always use it in conjunction with another spell: for example, you could stop a creature that's about to have you for breakfast or distract it and then use the vines. It's all about strategy."

Pause. "I'll explain more after the round of answers but nice question."

The ethics of springing a trap from one's wand versus springing one from the environment? "Couldn't have put it better myself." Smile.

And here was another answer that focused on the problems behind the Ministry's plan of trapping a creature. "You're very, very right, especially about the stress this would cause. Any kind of trap or binding is likely to make a person or a creature feel uncomfortable and stressed and as if they were under some kind of attack. Maybe this is something that the Ministry could look towards rectifying in the future. But a very valid point, well done."

Text Cut: Abey and Junia

................

Uh oh.

Hirsch blinked at this answer. Or, well, not so much the answer itself but who it was coming from and why. All of this made his heart sink downwards and he could've, if he wasn't teaching, kicked himself for bringing this up. It was like the Erkling lesson all over again.

"Abey...." he started quietly, glancing over at Junia quickly before looking back at the Gryffindor, "Come and see me afterwards, okay?" Because this wasn't something he could address in front of everyone and not something he was going to bring up when everyone was listening. It would prove to be embarrassing at the very least and might make the situation worse. And maybe the activity he had in mind wasn't going to be a good idea for him so the boy could do something else in the meantime. Practice another spell and not pay attention to the vines.

Hirsch nodded along at this answer. Yes, he did know what she was talking about. "The question of man-made versus something environmental is probably what led to the Ensnarement Charm being more acceptable than Incarcerous. The Devil's Snare is a bit of a weird case because its main aim is to strangle and ultimately kill something in its path but you're still very right."

And here was another answer that questioned whether the Ensnarement Charm really was ethical or not. Huh.

"Well done on mentioning this, especially the part about human interaction. It goes back to what some of you have mentioned before: they're more scared of you than you are of them. More human interaction is only going to scare them more and cause them to lash out. So, the Ministry suggests using this spell as a way of making the creature feel slightly calmer. Whether that works or is right or not is another story." Something that more and more of them were questioning.

"I like that way of thinking. Well done, Miss Holden."

More silence? Hirsch glanced at the Slytherin, silently wondering whether he should be worried about the lack of speech from him. It could be down to shyness, yes, or simply not wanting to talk but the man would've also been glad to have heard something from him as well. Or maybe that wasn't how he operated.

Regardless, if his magical capabilities and/or his efforts were good enough, it would be nothing to worry about. So, the man said nothing and moved onwards.

Another silent student but this time, there was a nod and a smile and even some notes being taken. So, all in all, he didn't see this as something to worry about. A lot of answers had been given, after all, and it might just be a case of the girl not knowing what else to say or not having anything else to add in.

So, Hirsch glanced at Miss Paton, smiled, and moved onwards again.

"That...... is an excellent reasoning. You wouldn't use a spell directly against a Golem, after all." And that was why they learnt about different creatures as well as how to defend themselves against it. Because the basic pieces of information was important to know too.

......... Oh?

Hirsch tilted his head, a proud smile in place while he listened to the answer Char was given. "I like that you've thought about the type of rope and vine and not just the object itself." Good! "The idea is that the use of some form of greenery is more calming to the creature and won't cause any harm to its fur/feathers/body in any way. Of course, this does depend on the type of vine you use but the general idea is to grow one that's leafy and looks as much like greenery as possible."

"Vines are easier to cut than ropes, which would cause you to maybe cut or injure the creature itself. The vines do come out of the ground or from some area of greenery itself," At this, he pointed at the rocks. "so it does anchor the creature in place but it does depend on what object you're growing the vines out of. I'll explain more shortly but excellent thought process, Char."

And here was a mention of the threatening vs. non-threatening aspects of both objects.

Good!

"That's exactly it, Miss Durant," he said, giving her a nod of his head, "The fact that the charm is something that's grown from the creature's natural habitat is something that would make it easier and safer for the creature and therefore, more acceptable in general. They probably won't see it as a threat, just a nuisance in their path. Very well done!"

"That's exactly it," Nod. "Vines are seen to be more acceptable because of the nature of them: because they're coming from the creature's own environment rather than something that is conjured from mid-air and, probably, something that the creature isn't used to." Not to mention, the creature might have had a bad time dealing with something like Incarcerous in the past.

"Well done!" And yes, it did make sense.

Aha! There it was!

Even though most people had mentioned something along these lines, he was glad that the Hufflepuff Prefect had specifically mentioned the part about the vines appearing from the ground. She would understand why shortly but it was a good thing she had mentioned it. "You're very right: they're likely to hurt less and won't be something entirely different for the animal. I'm glad you've mentioned the part about the vines being part of nature itself." Smile.

Move on? Move on.

Time was ticking, after all.

"Most of you have grasped the concept of the spell very well! The Ensnarement Charm is seen to be more ethical because of its use of vines and greenery to trap the creature. Because you are using something that the creature is more likely to be familiar with and less scared of. Vines have a bit of elasticity to them so they're not seen to be as restrictive as ropes are. Ropes are likely to scare and possibly provoke the creature even more and, more importantly, the material of the ropes might cause the creature some serious damage." And no one wanted to do that.

"Those of you who've questioned the ethics behind using the Ensnarement Charm," They knew who they were. "are right as well. They are, essentially, the same spell and a creature is still going to be scared about being trapped like this. Unfortunately, this is what the Ministry says you should do if you're faced with a particularly aggressive creature and need to wait for someone from the Magical Creatures department to deal with it. They say you should trap it where it is so that you don't cause it a lot of damage while an official comes to calm it down." Pause. "There...... are flaws to this plan, of course, but right now, this is what we've been told to do if our safety is in question."

Breathe.

"Something I want to draw to your attention is the fact that, unlike Incarcerous, the vines are grown and not conjured." Did anyone notice the difference in words when he initially described the spell? "You're growing the vines from the creature's environment rather than conjuring something new and unfamiliar at it. Because of this, it's helpful if you have a lot of greenery around you. A grassy area, a rainforest, some rocks with a bit of greenery growing on them..... anything that works. This spell, and it's important to note this, won't work in a desert." So they would need to use other means.

"While the spell is generally used to trap a creature, you could always find other uses for it. Facing a forest troll? Why not make it trip over the vines? That gives you enough time to make a run for it. You could always use it to distract someone you're duelling against so that you could shoot another spell at them." His green eyes twinkled over at the duellers in the room and he smiled. "It's all about strategy and doesn't just have to be about trapping a creature."

This...... was starting to turn into a lot of talking. Wrap it up, Hirschy. "As always, there is no use knowing about a spell without practising it so that's exactly what we're going to do right now." At this, he took out his wand and gave it an intricate wave. At once, words started to form in the air in large letters:

"Make sure to take note of the part about concentration: if you don't concentration hard enough, your vines could end up being weak, likely to breakage, or unlikely to grow very far in the first place." It's been known to happen. "Also note that the more greenery around you, the easier it'll be to use this spell. So if you work on the grass, you'll need less concentration and determination to make the vines grow than if you were to work on the rocks over at the side."

Breathe. Again.

"Now. If you're a first to fourth year, I want you to use the spell on the grass first. It's only when you've completed it, and there's time, that you can go onto trying on the rocks. If you're a fifth to seventh year, I want you to work on the rocks. You can start off with the grass if you want to but I do want you to try on the rocks as well." Make sense? "If you're a NEWT level student or an ambitious fifth year, you're welcome to try this spell non-verbally."

"So, pick an area of the grass or pick a rock and try out this spell. If you want to work together, that's okay as well. I'm going to give you......" He glanced down at his watch. "about ten minutes to practice and then we'll move onto the main activity."

"Ready? Off you go!"

Pause. "Abey? If you could come up here, please."

OOC: I'm giving out cookies to everyone who managed to read all of that holy crap

IT'S THE MINI ACTIVITY TIME! YAY!

The activity is: use the spell up there to make vines grow. First to fourth years: work on the grass and then move onto the rocks. Fifth to seventh years: you can work on the grass or go straight to the rocks but please try the spell on rocks at some point, if you can/want to. Please note: if there's less greenery around you, you'll need more concentration to make this work. More concentration = stronger vines. Simple.

I'm going to give you guys 48 hours for this portion. So, you have until the 16th of September at 8:30pm GMT+1 to make as many posts as you want.

Have fun and nudge me if you have any questions! ^^

Thanks, lovelies!

The Curly Top listened to the Professor, so its not just for trapping something but it can be used for other things innit? Bu right concentration, he gotta remember that....

He took his wand and practiced the wandstroke, doing the circle clockwise a few times in the air with the spell echoing in his head Irretio.... Irretio.... then shifted his wand over the grass. It didnt seem like there was anything happening for a second before the grass started to wriggle and grow exponentially with vines. Whoah! Ok yes its working its working!

He pointed his wand at the rocks and cast the spell non-verbally again. The vines began to sprout from the rock face, but not as fast as it did on the grass. More concentration? Yes yes, with matching scowly face too. Make them vines growwwww....

Of course instead of ignoring said look, Noah took it as a challenge. There were several offenses that the model™ committed that the Irishman could not overlook. Primarily him being unnecessarily attractive, which, in Noah's honest, unbiased opinion, was failing the little monsters in many ways - was there actually substance in that head of his? probably not - and would thusly impede Hogwarts from progressing any further than it already struggled to do as of late.

So he continued to write, though not before returning Hirsch's look with a look of his own which then turned into shock at the fact that one of the imbeciles managed to wrap the vine around her leg. Incredible. More scribbling - nonsense, really, and he was pretty sure they wouldn't accept these observations but Noah didn't care - as his eyes darted around the "classroom" he resumed the unintelligible mumbling under his breath, mostly in complaint about the room not being comfortable enough for him to sleep properly.

That Hirsch was his former house's current Head of House was both offensive and laughable. Noah didn't understand how anyone who could allow these clearly reanimated corpses (that are apparently considered students) to just stumble around, clumsily chanting and failing in their attempts to cast that ridiculous spell. It was honestly the most embarrassing thing he'd ever seen in his entire life - an exaggeration, but still - so much so that Noah had gotten frustrated all over again and fell asleep, hunched over his parchment.

He was okay, Abey was. She could tell just from the look they shared, a benefit of having shared years of these looks between them, and she felt instantly better about turning her attention on her own spell casting. She could do so freely now.

Taking a deep breath in, Junia held it for a moment and then let it out slowly, clearing her mind. The only thing she was thinking about now was producing a vine. Intent was important, yes? Now she just had to put it into action.

"Irretio!" The clockwise circular motion was done on the rock she'd chosen and then she flicked her wrist upwards towards the ceiling. Come on, come on, come on...

Nothing.

The fifth year almost pouted-almost-but she didn't. This was just a minor setback, she had this.

Rolling her shoulders, she turned her attention back to the rock and narrowed her eyes slightly. "Irretio!"This time a vine did shoot upwards towards the ceiling and though it was thin and didn't look like it'd hold much of anything strong, it was a small victory. "Yes."

It was good to know that using ropes instead of vines wasn't a life sentence to Azkaban. Of course Kitty didn't want to injure any endangered creature (unless she had no other choice) but she'd find it distinctly unfair if she read in the Daily Prophet about someone going to jail for defending themselves with a rope.

Nodding in satisfaction at Hirsch's answer, Kitty turned her attention towards the grass at her feet and shouted, "Irretio!" Nada. "Irretio!" Still Nada.

"Irreti-" she began, but was interrupted when she saw a vine come out of the ground and wrap itself around Ms. Katy's leg. Nice. Upon seeing that she was alright, a burst of laughter escaped her lips, which she tried to disguise as a cough.

Because the head girl would never laugh at another student in trouble, even if that other student hated her. That would be irresponsible. So yeah, just a cough.

It was definitely the concentration part. Obviously she had got the wand movement and spell pronunciation correct, because there were little green shoots, sticking up out of the grass. They just couldn't be used to trap anything. Except maybe an ant, and they were hardly likely to want to cause her harm enough to deserve it.

With a sigh, Dahlia rolled her shoulders and her neck and closed her eyes this time, trying to picture exactly how she wanted the vines to look. Maybe if she did the whole thing with her eyes closed that would help? Not that she could do that in real life, if it came down to it. Whatever creature she was hoping to trap would probably kill her while she wasn't looking.

"Okay, I can do this. Well, I can do better than that anyway." She snorted at the tiny shoots and shook her head. Long trailing vines. Looooong, long, long. Not short, stubby things. "Irretio!" Circle, flick, concentrate.

Again, nothing happened for a good few seconds, then the tendrils began. And unlike last time they didn't stop until they were a couple of feet in length. Ah. Progress. She could maybe catch a rabbit now.

While Remy held Miss Toussaint in place, Hirsch ripped out the last of the vine and stood up again. He would come back to check on her but right now, he needed to move on and give the others something to do as well. Stop the risk of something like this happening.

Though, given what the activity was......

Hirsch shook the thought away, placed his thumb and index finger between his lips and let out a loud whistle. "Okay, everyone, that was an excellent attempt but there's no use learning a spell without putting it into some kind of practice." He didn't see the point in only getting the hang of the spell without some element of a situation added in there. "So, I want you all to take your things and place them off to one side of the room so no one ends up tripping over bags." Safety and all that. And he would wait right here for them to do just that before explaining the rest.

Once a minute or two had passed and the space looked a little clearer, the Defence Professor raised his wand and gave it a flick. At once, the shield surrounding the box gave way and the box let out another wobble. Another flick and a shield appeared close to Abey, shielding him from the other section of the class.

"Today, I want you all to try this spell out on a bunch of creatures that are..... well. They're not dark creatures but they won't be scared to bite, scratch and cause havoc. It is therefore crucial that you make them stay rooted to the spot unless you want to leave here with a bite." Pause. "And don't worry about hurting them, either." He had his reasons for that, one being that they're used to greenery and vines and another being that size was no guarantee of power. "I want you to try and use the Ensnarement Charm but if you need to defend yourself or someone else, you're welcome to use the Shield Charms or any other defensive spell."

"So without further ado, let's meet your match!" At this, he flicked his wand a third time at the box, making it spring open. "I'm going to give you....." He glanced down at his watch. "A little over twenty minutes."

"Ready? GO!"

Now, back to Miss Toussaint. "Are you okay? Would you rather sit out for this?"

OOC: Wheeeeee! MAIN ACTIVITY TIME!

So firstly, if you're still working on the mini activity, feel free to continue but make sure to label the top of your post with 'mini activity' for my reference.

For those going with the main activity, you are to use the Ensnarement Charm to try and stop the creatures in their tracks. Here are some rules:
- Be warned, they will bite, scratch, claw and try to topple your charries over
- How do I know this? Because I'll be RPing them
- You're welcome to work together or separately
- You're also welcome to use any other defensive spells you see fit to save yourself/someone else. I'm not fussy
- Try to be mindful of each other's charries and play nicely <3
Here are the spell details, in case:

Quote:
Ensnarement Charm
A spell that causes vines to grow from an area/object of greenery

Incantation: Irretio (ee-REH-tee-oh)
Wand movement: clockwise circular motion over area you want the vines to grow out of, flick upwards towards the creature/direction you want the spell to go
Light: n/a
Difficulty: fifth year spell
Other: need to maintain a high level of concentration; more concentration = stronger vines

I'm going to give you until 11:59pm GMT+1 on the 21st of September to make as many posts as you want. If you have any questions, I'm just a nudge away <3

Have fun!

A small, potato of a head popped out of the box and blinked at the surroundings, clearly confused. Then, with an almighty lurch, the box toppled forwards and out sprung......

......... gnomes. A number of very small and very ugly gnomes.

There was a moment of silence while the gnomes looked at the students, taking them all in. Some big, some small. Then, there was a loud and clear GRUNT from one of the gnomes. As if they understood, all of them grunted in unison and CHARGED FORWARDS.

Ready or not, HERE WE COME!

"PROFESSOR!" Thomas was now a little bit frightened. "Your gnomes are moving!" Okay, what was this Gnomeo and Juliet or something? "I think someone been watching too much Gnomeo and Juliet!" Yes, gnomes were not alive, nope, that was just in a film.

Thomas closed his eyes.

"This is all just a dream!" He kept his eyes shut, hopefully, he would be back in his bed and these gnomes would be gone when he opened his eyes.

Default mini activity - catching up
Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

Honestly, Sam was struggling with the concept of these vines being much better than ropes. It wasn't that she doubted Hirsch, but did a few leaves really make that much difference? She also wondered quite how feasible it'd be to grow them in an urban environment. Wasn't like dangerous creatures only existed in the countryside.

Anyways, she supposed she would find out by practising and testing her abilities on the rocky side of the classroom. Verbal first, since she'd only conquered her first two non-verbals in the last week or so.

Once there, she pulled out her wand, and thought about some of the vines hanging in Myers' greenhouses downstairs. A decent stalk, nothing weedy. If she was going to go to the effort of growing vines, no need to for them to break straight away. "Ir-ret-io," she practised saying, sounding it out slowly at first, making sure to catch all the syllables. "Irretio. Irretio." And the wand action too, making a clockwise circle in the air and lifting it towards the celing a few times.

Seemed straightforward enough.

Spying a cluster of moss on a nearby rock, Sam took a breath and tried to block out whatever craziness was going on with the other students around her. "Irretio!" She circled the rock and lifted her wand upwards. A vine was sprouting, but it wasn't exactly the strong one she was aiming for. Another try then. "Irretio."

Closer.

Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. The box was opening. This wasn't going to end well, was it? Whatever was in there was going to eat them all, because they were all useless at this spell - well a lot of them. How could he release the kraken without much warning?

Dahlia backed up as soon as the gnomes tumbled out, her eyes widening and a sharp shot of fear going through her. Oh, confidence please come back. PLEASE. What she wouldn't have given for a surge right now. Something to make her believe she was going to do this, because those things looked NASTY. And.....oh god. It was coming right at her.

"WHAT IS HAPPENING????"

She screamed and rushed behind the nearest person, an older, taller person. Very rarely did she want to be saved from anything, usually she would run headlong into it and have fun. But there was a creature coming at her and she'd barely made vines long enough to wrap around their big toes, never mind bind them down.

But she had to try, because otherwise there'd be chaos. Even more so than there already was. "Irretio!! Irretio!!! IRRETIO!!!!!!!!!" As one of the things got closer, Dahlia flung her wand out and did her best to perform the spell. All that happened was a sprinkle of sparks shooting out the end. Why did that always happen when she was nervous??

Rhea only had time to practise twice in the rocky area before the Professor announced that it was time to move on. The attempts weren't perfect, but the second one resulted in several strong vines growing up from the rocky area, which was more than she'd expected. She'd given it an attempt, just as he'd asked, and she was relatively pleased with how she'd done. He couldn't complain. Besides, it looked like he had his hands full dealing with other students. He probably wouldn't even notice if she was struggling slightly more than the others fifth years were.

Now she had the really difficult task of facing something to tackle...

Gnomes, as it turned out.

This was not going to go well. Add the pressure of the situation to her already limited magical ability and she was basically doomed. She tried not to let that show, of course. She had a reputation to maintain. One of someone that remained unaffected by things, even when they were difficult. Right? And there was no way that she'd not at least try. If any of those gnomes came her way, she'd try and take them on, but she obviously wasn't going to seek out a fight. And....... she might....... keep an eye on the younger students. Maybe. No promises. But something in Rhea always kicked into gear when she had a purpose like, yk, making herself useful to people.

Then... the dreaded words passed Hirsch's lips and the gnomes practically fell out of the box.

And, almost as if on queue, Rhea's gaze fell upon a helpless looking kid. Already? Really...? She looked at the Gryffindor boy (Thomas) and was struck with the thought that he didn't seem like a very brave lion. But did she really want to help him? Could she even help him? Who knew.

For now, she kept an eye on the situation and retreated slightly.
