It was a very cold night at the end of January, but Tristan had taken every precaution to make sure his students stayed warm. Around the immediate area where they would be working he used multiple warming spells to make sure that no one was cold. Working outside in these conditions would be a little difficult, but this lesson was going to be totally worth it. He also put out the hay bales for students to sit on in a semi circle and put individual Bluebell flames in jars at each bale, in case the students wanted to warm their hands when they sat down.
It was close to midnight, when the full moon was almost at it's peak. Tristan had forgone his normal hay bale masterpiece and just sat in a camp chair waiting for the students to arrive. He also had a table full of cups and two cauldrons; one full of hot chocolate and the other full of warm apple cider. Professor Wayland leaned back in his chair, hot chocolate in hand, and patiently waited for his students to arrive.

The closer they were the warmer they would be. She was definetly planning on snuggling closer to people, especially Skylar. But before she could say anything else, Ace had appeared and taken a seat next to her. He too held a beverage. And she noticed him eying what she was holding. "Hot chocolate," she whispered with a smile before taking a sip of it. Ahh... That was warmer. Speaking of warmer.... She then snuggled a little closer to the boyfriend totally for warmth's sake. The lesson began and the Professor started with a question. She chuckled a little when she heard Zoryn's response about fifth years. That was def true. Hah. She hd fallen asleep many a times in the common room with a textbook as a pillow.
"Tasmanian devils are nocturnal," she said, remembering a sign that she had read at an animal sanctuary when she had gone back home to visit cousins.

Oooh. Creatures that were nocturnal? That was quite interesting. She laughed a little at Zoryn's answer. That was so true. She was pretty nocturnal at the moment, trying to get all of her studying in. She just wanted to do good in her exams. She hoped her studying would be enough. But she didn't need to think about that right now. No point in stressing herself out before she had even gotten to the exams. She didn't want to freak out.
She raised her hand, and smiled when it was her turn to speak. "Owls are nocturnal" And they were pretty too. She liked owls.

Maisie sat up, knocking her cup to the floor. Mooncalves! They were going to do Mooncalves! Someone had already mentioned it, so she had to bite her tongue, but as soon as Professor Wayland asked about creatures that only come out during the full moon, she got excited. She was sitting with her feet in a puddle of hot chocolate, but she didn't care. "Professor, lethifolds come out at night. They smother people to death." Maisie pulled her feet out of her spilled drink. "And certain sea creatures come to the surface at full moon when they'd usually be in the deeps. There's a kind of jellyfish that does it."

They would be focusing on creatures that were nocturnal, big surprise.
She wasn't disappointed by the obvious nature of the lesson though, in fact, the Fourth Year preferred these. She disliked walking into a lesson and feeling as if the Professor was turning her education into a guessing game...when they all had the syllabus and should have known the topics they would learn anyway. Was she the only one who read that thing, excitedly scanning for all the possibilities of that year?
Yes? Just her? Well that was a shame.
Jessa listened to the others, curious to know whether Marchand would be meeting them like Derf had asked but half hoping not. If he showed up, this would likely turn into another arts and crafts lesson and suffice to say she'd like to begin learning things she would use outside of rainy Saturday afternoon setting--and even then she had better things to do.
"Cats and kneazles are nocturnal. I watch my sister's sometimes if I'm up. He gets into a lot." Which explained his grumpy disposition during the day when her niece insisting on making him her next play thing. "Why aren't we touching on werewolves though? I mean I know you said 'cause they're humans and all but they're also classified as beasts."
Just curious was all. It would help her when making distinctions later down the line.

Vivian was definitely here. Psssh, of course.
With a cup full of hot chocolate in one hand, the prefect quietly wished they didn't have to be out here tonight. Though, of course, it would save her from curfew patrol anyway. On top of that, she was grateful for the jar of bluebell flames near here and good Merlin, she had brought a really nice sweater from home. Thanks, mum. Vivian struggled a bit with trying to keep herself awake, but took a sip from her hot chocolate. It helped a little bit.
Ahem, anyway. Nocturnal creatures? Creatures that came out during the full moon... that wasn't a werewolf? Honestly, that had narrowed down her list and as more of her classmates shared their answers, the more Vivian had to think quickly for one that was mentioned. Petty and competitive, sure. However, the blond couldn't help but laugh a little at the mentions of fifth years being nocturnal. And the best part was that it wasn't a lie. Vivian had gotten so used to staying up during the late hours of the night due to "things". Ahem.
The prefect raised her hand to share. "Opossums are nocturnal creatures, too, Professor," Vivian offered.

Emmeline beamed at Stasya as her bestie took a seat next to her before the lesson started -- and again once it HAD started and her bestie mentioned mooncalves. She realllllly hoped that Stasya had guessed correctly that they'd be learning about those creatures tonight, 'cause that would be super awesome, mhm.
Some of her classmates' answers were kinda disturbing, but the second year kept her hopes up for the mooncalves. Eventually she raised her hand too and answered, "Sugar gliders are nocturnal too." And also one of the cutest Muggle creatures ever in Emmeline's opinion. She would be okay with working with some Muggle creatures too. Just hopefully not that one that apparently strangled people...
Ooooh. Etta gave a quiet sigh of relief when the professor said that they’d be heading back to their dorms soon enough. As much as she enjoyed this subject, having a midnight lesson was exhausting and she was kind of having a hard time keeping her eyes open. Oops. .... and did someone mention fifth years? She grinned a little, eyeing the young Gryffindor. She was hilarious, really.
Anyway, back to the question. Um. “I think certain types of rats are nocturnal, professor.” She took another sip of her hot chocolate, listening to the others respond with their answers.

Shay was becoming more and more curious about what animal they would be working with. The professor said that the class shouldn't take too long. ???? She had absolutely no guesses. And then came the question. The class was tasked with naming nocturnal creatures. Well that would narrow down the animal of the day possibilities, but Shay was still clueless. Ready to give her answer to the question though, she raised her hand.
"Raccoons are nocturnal. The ones I've seen have been known to be up to trouble at night, like getting into people's garbage cans and making a mess.". Of course those were the citified raccoons. That's what Shay was familiar with. The ones that lived in the woods were another story.

So instead of responding, he gave her an unamused look and turned to the next hand in the air. He was not going to give her the attention she so clearly wanted.

He raised his right eyebrow, "Why would Professor Marchand be joining us?" What a weird random question. Gaston had his own classes to worry about and he was sure to guess the man was asleep right now seeing as he didn't have a reason for a night class being the charms professor and all.

"Very good, Maisie. It's a good thing we don't live in a tropical climate and don't have to deal with Lethifolds. And yes, there are sea creatures that come out at a full moon as well. Do you need a towel for that? Or a quick Scorgify?" He asked. He noticed she had spilled her her hot chocolate.

Well...that wasn't quite correct actually. "Actually, Jessa, most house cats and domesticated Kneazles are Crepuscular, which means they are most active in the early morning and early evening hours. Cats and Kneazles generally sleep anywhere from 16 to 20 hours a day which is why they have a burst of energy at those times. That's not to say they can't be nocturnal, but most domesticated Cats/Kneazles are Crepuscular. Of course, that is also not to say that your pets aren't nocturnal, because you know them best." He paused to listen to her question because of course she had a question.
"That is very true they are also classified as beasts, but that is only with a full moon and with the Wolfsbane potion they are able to keep their human mind so that they don't attack. So, I personally do not group them with creatures because they are predominantly human." This of course was his personal opinion. He knew a few Werewolves that were very wonderful people, they just unfortunately were attacked.

"Yes, Shay, for the most part they are primarily nocturnal, but they can be seen getting stuff done during they day as well. Sometimes they will wake up in the middle of the day and search for food or something to drink, especially nursing females. Though, you are more likely to see them in spring time." "Very good answers, everyone. There are many different species of creatures, magical or not, that are nocturnal or only come out with the full moon, and if we had more time I would list them all for you. "And, by the way, the creature we will be observing has already been mentioned." He grinned before continuing, "We will be observing, and only observing because they are very shy creatures, Mooncalves. Though, our main activity will be after we have observed them so as not to frighten them." Tristan was sure that there would be some excitement about this. Mooncalves were super adorable creatures. He wasn't going to give away what the activity was yet either.
"But before we move over to the observation area, I have another set of questions for you." He paused and began pacing again, as before, to help him word these questions properly. Something about the movement helped him to collect his thoughts. "What do Mooncalves look like? Please only give one characteristic. Also, do Mooncalves have any magical abilities?" He paused, "Again, you may answer either one or both questions." He stopped pacing again in the middle of the group, waiting for answers.

Olly was very cozy sitting on the hay bale by the bluebell flames and the warming charms. He was also very drowsy, but doing his best to pay attention. He did not have a chance to name a nocturnal animal because his brain was not thinking fast enough. Anything he thought of had already been said and he didn't want to repeat an answer. He took some more sips of his hot chocolate, trying to wake himself up enough to be ready for the next question. It was about mooncalves. That was kind of exciting because Olly had never seen a mooncalf before. He did know a few things about them, though.
Mooncalf poop has magical properties, sir." The proper term may have been dung, but it was almost midnight so poop it was. "It can be used to fertilize magical plants to help them grow faster. I'm...not sure if the same is true if it's used on non-magical plants."

Patrick listened to everyone rattle off answers about the types of animals that come out at night. He had heard of owls, he often saw them around when he would hike or go camping with his parents. He had never heard of mooncalves, he had done all he was supposed to in preparation for class, but "Hmm". He mumbled under his breath taking in the class and the other answers in hopes that he could really shine in the main activity because he knew for a fact that he was better at observing first.

what do Mooncalfs look like? It was easy for him to point one out if it was in front of him, but it was a look that only a mother could love. A majestic abraxan it wasnt for sure. "It looks like a pale, furry, bug-eyed giraffe. But bite-sized. And with duck feet."

There had been a grin when Professor Wayland had said she was correct, but in all actuality, Stasya had been listening to the other answers and therefore the professor’s reactions to them all. Because she was still dealing with the possibility that they were going to actually get to see mooncalves. Because there was no way that they were going to be studying lethifolds, considering those were dark creatures so probably more likely to come up in one of Professor Hirsch’s lessons. Plus, she was curious about Derf’s question of if her head of house was going to be joining the lesson, even if he was a werewolf. They’d already been told that they weren’t studying werewolves in the lesson, after all. Although she wondered if the Charms professor was actually a werewolf and locked up somewhere, since it was a full moon.
And she was fairly sure that there weren’t jellyfish in the lake. But that didn’t change the fact her grin had gotten even bigger as the professor had revealed that the creature they were studying had been mentioned. It had to be…and it was. Yay mooncalves, and her eyes had wandered as she tried to see if the creatures were hiding nearby or something. Even if they weren’t getting to interact with them, she was excited.
Her hand went up again, too, shortly after Ace had mentioned their appearance. “Mooncalves’ eyes are on the top of their heads so it’s easier for them to watch the moon while they’re dancing and stuff.” And they were big and blue and round kind of like the moon too. She thought they were cute, anyway. Not all creatures had to be all majestic and everything, even if she did still kind of want a winged horse of her own. They weren’t talking about those though.

The full moon. So stunning, and yet always carried a tone of caution for her. Growing up near Knockturn Alley, she'd always had to keep a wary eye out for werewolves on a night like this. So she was perhaps a little reassured to hear that wasn't the topic of today's lesson. Not that she was scared of them. Just under a full moon, they could be... unpredictable.
Mooncalves though? Honestly, she knew much more about werewolves than those.
So... she'd keep it simple. Just something she remembered from a picture on her textbook. "They have pale grey skin, professor. Smooth rather than furry."

Oooh. Mooncalf. They were prettty. OR at least she thought so anyway. Creatures wasn't her best class, but she liked it. She loved learning about creatures. Now she had to go back into her memory to see if she could remember anything about these creatures. She had read about them in her prep for OWLS. So she was hoping that she could at least remember something. If she couldn't it didn't really bode well for how she was going to get on in her owls. For a few moments, as she thought, she just wrote down what her class mates said. She didn't really want to repeat anything that they said so it was important that she listened well.
And she'd finally thought of something, so she stuck her hand into the air before speaking. "A mooncalf has four legs, and has large webbed feet" Which was interesting to be honest. She wondered what it would be like to have webbed feet. It would certainly be different.

She raised her hand. "They have big feet, but narrow legs," Maisie had never seen a Mooncalf but she'd loved them since she was nine. They were in her stories, with her knight. She had a few books with Mooncalves in too. Her mother thought she'd left them at home, but she had packed them.

So... mooncalves? Vivian felt no need to complain. From what she had read about the creatures from her "light" OWLs studying, it was probably a bit obvious that they would be dealing with those creatures tonight. Her interest kept her a little bit more awake than when she had arrived in class earlier. She also tried keeping herself busy by jotting down a few of what the others have shared on a piece of parchment. She'd rewrite those next time when her schedule permits and when she wasn't battling to keep herself awake, like tonight.
But now she had to rack her brain again for another characteristic about mooncalves that the other students hadn't shared. Vivian raised her hand to share. "They have a ministry classification of XX, meaning they're harmless, professor," the prefect said. "And they're also really cute." Because c'mon... miniature giraffes with big eyes and webbed feet? Adorable.

Skylar was definitely very appreciative of Olivia snuggling closer to her, even if she wasn't terribly cold. Just tired, but awake enough to listen as her classmates listed off many nocturnal creatures - both mundane and magical. Yet only one of which they were discussing today, which made sense, as she recalled in her OWLs studies this year. Also, despite being fifteen, she may have covered her mouth with the back of hand to stifle a giggle and amused expression at Oliver's mention of poop. Yes, she recalled reading about that.
Right, focus time. "Mooncalf means literally foolish person, which was originally referred to a deformed calf born under the malign influence of the full moon." Explained the moon in the creature's name.

"Just curious," he replied with a shrug to the professor's follow up of his own question. And it was CURIOUS that the Charms professor would NOT be joining them, wasn't it? WASN'T IT? Yes, the third year WAS ignoring the fact that it was perfectly normal that no other professor be present at the lesson -
let alone the Charms professor.
But aaaaaaanyway....MOONCALVES!
Derf was pretty STOKED because, well, Newt Scamander had an entire herd of those in his suitcase, you know? Derf had a few stuffed animals of them back home, enough to kinda be a herd because mum had used a Doubling Charm on them for him once or twice. A little factoid that, well, wasn't entirely what the professor was looking for. Derf REALLY wanted to talk about the dung, but the Slytherin prefect beat him to that and then he was so sidetracked thinking about the silvery poop that he, er, sorta missed the opportunity to share more on some other ticks along the mooncalf information sheet.

Etta continued sipping at her hot chocolate, really glad for the warm beverage. It definitely made her feel a lot better. Heh. She listened to the professor talk about nocturnal creatures, occasionally glancing down at textbook and taking notes. ... oh and they were going to be learning about mooncalves. Nice. She hadn’t read much about them before so this was going to be an interesting lesson.

To anyone who observed her in other lessons, it would become clear that Jessa did very little reading for Care of Magical Creatures.
While there were times when she came across certain creatures that peaked her interest and encouraged her to read on, for the most part, she was probably more lost than the average individual when it came to this class. It was kinda like how she seldom knew the answer in Astronomy because she never bothered to put much effort into it.
While she did nod at the correction to her response, it was the only reaction the man would be getting from her. Why? Simple, she didn't know much about mooncalves and had never had a reason to.
Contrary to popular belief about Ravenclaws absorbing tons of information and wanting to study everything, Jessa only collected information on the things that interested her. So far in her studies, nothing had called for knowledge on mooncalves, or the majority of everything else they learned during these lessons.
She remained silent, listening to the answers being offered up by the rest of her classmates. It didn't escape her that Zoryn too had chosen not to offer up an answer, which meant she wouldn't be alone in keeping it shut--regardless of the other girl's reason.
How soon would they be able to observe the mooncalves? She was growing restless.

Derf was pretty STOKED because, well, Newt Scamander had an entire herd of those in his suitcase, you know? Derf had a few stuffed animals of them back home, enough to kinda be a herd because mum had used a Doubling Charm on them for him once or twice. A little factoid that, well, wasn't entirely what the professor was looking for. Derf REALLY wanted to talk about the dung, but the Slytherin prefect beat him to that and then he was so sidetracked thinking about the silvery poop that he, er, sorta missed the opportunity to share more on some other ticks along the mooncalf information sheet.

Tristan listened with a smile to Derfael's answer. "That is correct! Very good, Derfael." He grinned more at the young man's question. "You'll have to wait and see." He checked his watch they had about 15 minutes so they were sure to make it.

"That they do, Etta, and yes it is for mating purposes." Tristan wondered why she always answered in questions when her answers were always right. She needed a little more confidence in her knowledge on subjects. He gave her a reassuring smile and turned to see if anyone else had any answers.

Tristan looked briefly over at Zoryn to see if she was going to give another sassy answer and it seemed she wasn't. He wanted to smile, but suppressed it. Though Zoryn didn't make the best decisions, she still had her moments of goodness....even if they were few and far between.

Another one he was surprised to see was quiet; Jessa.
He was actually really surprised she didn't have anything to add or question on this subject. But less questions made them have more time to get through what they needed to so they could make it in time to see the Mooncalves.
"Very good answers everyone!" Tristan said clapping his hands together once. "Now to recap! Mooncalves are very shy creatures that only come out of their den when the moon is completely full. This makes them very difficult to find." He paused, "As many of you have said, mooncalves have smooth, pale grey skin, four legs with webbed feet,
long necks, and round heads with bulging blue eyes. They are very strange but cute creatures. If you don't want to cuddle one after you see them, you are a crazy person!" He said with a chuckle.
He looked at his watch; 10 minutes. "Now, as a couple of you have said, when they come out of their burrows during the full moon and once they are in the moonlight, they do a beautifully complicated dance on their hind legs, which is for mating purposes, that cause interesting geometric patterns in whatever type of field they are in. This has caused a lot of confusion for muggles." In fact it really scared muggles. The though it was Aliens trying to communicate.
"The only truly magical thing about them is their dung. It's silver in color, and when used as fertilizer makes magical plants grow very fast and very strong. BUT you have to use it before the sun comes up or it will not work." This information would be more important after the observed the Mooncalves. Tristan looked at his watch again, then clapped his hands once.
"Alright, so we are now going to head to the hay field behind the barn. You may leave your bags, but bring your dragon hide gloves." Tristan started walking towards the hay field. "We have about 10 minutes to get over there and get set up to observe. So walk quickly and whisper." Didn't want to scare the sweet creatures.
OOC: Alright darlings, this is the first part of the mini activity. We are doing this in stages because it makes it a little easier for my brain lol So Stage 1 you are walking over to the hay field. You can do it in as many posts as you like, talk with your friends etc. When I post tomorrow Stage 2 will be given. Thank you for being patient <3 You have 24 hours to post for Stage 1.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy retrieved her dragon-hide gloves from her bag and donned them. She carefully got up from her camp chair and quietly made her way to the hay field located behind the barn. Daisy was excited at the prospect of seeing these unusual creatures but she kept her feelings to herself. She didn't want to frighten the mooncalves or any other creatures.
Maisie almost skipped towards the hay field. She had never seen a real Mooncalf before and she was excited!
The first time she saw one in a book was in a story about a deer meeting a Mooncalf in a Muggle forest. It was in her trunk in the dormitory. She thought that the perfect end to today would be to curl up with it before she went to sleep.
