Charms Lesson 2: Don't Fly off the Handle! A chilly late winter morning is the backdrop for today's charms lesson, but don't let the cold keep you away! Professor Marchand has used plenty of heating charms to make the room nice and toasty for the arriving students, and if the spells aren't enough to warm you up, the refreshment table at the back of the room is stocked with shortbread cookies and hot chocolate. Why not help yourself? The professor stands at his usual place in the front of the room, waiting to greet the students with a smile. Today he holds a large box tucked under his arm, and as you enter the classroom, you'll notice an even bigger box sitting atop the professor's desk. But the boxes aren't the only strange things today. If you happen to look up, you'll see red, blue, green, and yellow bubbles on the ceiling. What are they for? Only time will tell! OOC: Class Progression Question 1 Question 2 Mini Activity: Airplane Obstacle Course Main Activity: Bubble Pop |
Vivian was still very much determined to do better in Charms. Not that she sucked at it at all, but the blond knew she had a loooot more to learn. She also had been working a lot harder lately, considering just how close her OWLs were. Just months away? Too soon, tooooo soon! Peeking inside the classroom, Vivian blinekd when she realised that she was the first student to class. That... rarely happened, but it felt like a small achievement for the prefect to know that she arrived first to a Charms class. Not bad. "Good morning, professor," Vivian greeted the man with a smile. "What's that, sir?" The box under his... and the one on his table, too. Nothing was gonna jump out of it today, yeah? She then made her way to the refreshments table at the back and snagged a cookie. Maybe she'll consider a cup of hot chocolate for later. The cookie would suffice for now, she thought, and then took a seat near the front. She'd usually sit at the back, but she had "got to do better in Charms" priorities today. Also, ooooooh bubbles! |
The first thing the young slytherin noticed when she walked into the charms classroom was the smell of chocolate. HOT chocolate. Her head turned right to the sweets table and her body followed suit. She grabbed some hot chocolate and shortbread, never being able to say no to free sweets and then walked further into the classroom. "Thanks, Professor Marchand," Natalie said, lifting her steaming cup of cocoa as she went to take a seat in the second row. The second thing she noticed was the boxes... And third was the bubbles. She nibbled on the shortbread as she looked up at the colorful bubbles that were on the ceiling. Hmm. Odd. She considered asking, but supposed she would find out soon enough what they would have to do with class. For now she would eat and sip. |
The school seemed colder... especially when the Gryffindors had, like every other house, experienced a dorm debacle.... Wearing her fuzzy woolen sweater, Vi Holden entered the classroom to find it much warmer than what it had been in the corridor. Oh thank Merlin. She was grateful for the heating charms. As soon as she entered the room, she saw Professor Marchand, Vivian, and Natalie already seated. But what was her Head of House holding exactly? Curious, she was. A large box tucked under his arm... And a bigger box on his desk. "Hello Professor Marchand! How are you?" she greeted with a warm smile and then something caught her eye. She took her gaze to the ceiling and saw the brightly coloured bubbles above her head... Hm... intriguing. She took one more glance at the ceiling before she helped herself to some hot cocoa and a shortbread. "Thanks!" |
Daisy entered the room with a small smile. She had been feeling unusually odd for some strange reason. Maybe she had come down with a cold from the winter weather. "Good morning, Professor Marchand!" Daisy greeted. Heading to the refreshments table she helped herself to some hot chocolate. She sat down near the front of the classroom and looked up noticing the pretty assortment of bubbles. |
Ronan couldn't understand how some people were still so freaking perky after everything that was happening this term. He, while doing better than finding the dorms in their ruined state, had barely been sleeping and was surviving solely on coffee. Which he'd been running so late that morning that he had forgotten to fix for himself. So the hot chocolate was a welcome sight. He fixed himself a cup, grabbed a cookie and took his seat. "Good morning, professor." Wait, what was up with the boxes? And bubbles? At least they weren't balloons. |
Etta entered the classroom, looking extremely relieved. It was so wonderfully warm inside and she was feeling very glad to get away the cold corridors. She was already looking forward to warmer weather, ugh. Aaaaaanyway. She instantly noticed the bubbles on the ceiling before her eyes drifted towards the box that the professor was holding.. and another box on his desk. What was that all about? Interestiiiing. ”Hello, professor.” The prefect greeted politely, taking a seat somewhere near the front of the classroom. She ignored the hot chocolate for now as she pulled out her textbook, waiting for class to begin. |
Kyle noticed the professor, the boxes, and the bubbles first. He blinked a little as he stood in the doorway, then went off to the side to allow others to come through. He pondered what he was seeing as he looked around for anything else that could be a clue into today's lesson. Then he spotted cookies and hot chocolate. He grinned, forgetting all about the boxes and bubbles for the moment. "You're the best, Professor Marchand!" he said as he made his way there, his shyness all but forgotten upon seeing the snacks. He took a cookie (let's not be greedy!) and some hot chocolate then went to have a seat at his desk. This lesson was going to be an awesome one. He just knew it! |
Now, Faith didn't usually like coming to class. She'd honestly much rather sit in her pyjamas and play with her blue burmese, Qitty. Qitty was a good cat, most of the time. When she wasn't trying to eat Sylvie's toad. But that only happened about four times. She knew better now. Or so Faith hoped. Anyway, forced to not wear pyjamas, this was already not the best thing that could happen. But Faith went to class anyway, greeting Professor Marchand at the door halfheartedly as she did. Until she saw the cookies and hot chocolate, at which point she promptly perked up and did help herself. "THANKS PROFESSOR!" she called from the table at the back, while heading towards her seat. Faith Chosen wasted no time. Nuh uh. Not where food was concerned. |
Maisie looked up. She had a habit of looking up because she loved the night sky so much. "Bubbles!" She said, happily. They were in the house colours. "Hello, Professor, what are the bubbles for?" She asked. |
......er....did she...even wanna know....? No, probably not. Jessa had taken enough guesses with these Charms classes to know that the answers were never usually something she was into. The young girl would simply save herself the disappointment by not thinking about the floating bubbles and the boxes present. Just looking at them brought her mind back to the conversation she'd had with Cameron on Charms and the arts. It was discouraging to say the least. "Hello Professor." She greeted, moving beyond the treats today without indulging as she usually did. Today was just the sort of day where the Ravenclaw didn't feel very indulgent in many things. In fact, she wanted to go back to her dorm, or her lab, shut the door and get lost in her latest read from the library. Classes were the last thing on her mind, especially when they'd taken on the pattern they had. Jessa flopped into her seat, skillfully keeping her gaze clear of the props to be used for the day. She'd been very serious when she said she wouldn't think about them which left those soft blue eyes of hers trained on her desk and the hands she'd clasped atop it. |
Patrick walked in, excited for charms class. It was fascinating to him what a charm could do for the world. He hadn't really done as well in the last class he felt but he figured he could only go up from here. He walked into the room and noticed the hot chocolate at the back of the room and got a little excited that they would have a drink during class. As he walked in he noticed Professor Marchand at the front of the room. "Good morning professor", as he walked into the room he noticed that there were bubbles in the house colors floating in the sky and wondered if that would have something to do with the lesson. He picked his seat on the left side of the room and waited for class to start. |
Vivian :p How on Earth was Skylar late for Charms?! Only she wasn't late, but she wasn't the first one here, which meant, per the fifth year, she was late. It wasn't her fault though that she'd been so engrossed in her readings that morning that she lost track of time. Where was Vivian to nudge her and remind her to get to class? Oh, already there... and sitting in the front?! What was this blasphemy? And yet, she couldn't help but feel PROUD to see her bestie sitting there all attentive. "Morning Professor Marchand," Skylar greeted cheerfully, because why shouldn't she be cheerful towards him? He was one of the most trustworthy professors at Hogwarts. Sliding into the seat next to Vivian, she beamed at the blond. "I'm proud of you, you know," she whispered. Yup. She couldn't even be mad at her for getting to charms class before her, because well, it was charms. |
If she hadn’t been conflicted about all the weirdness going on before, the combined disasters of the dorm ransacking and somehow finding herself standing in a corridor in her pajamas the night before had made Stasya that much more distracted. Even though her stuffed goat had made a relatively full recovery, it all still bothered her. Everything was bothering her, and she just wanted it to stop. But even so, she’d made herself walk up to the Charms classroom after breakfast, quieter than usual. The snacks on display didn’t get a reaction from her, even though she still for the most part stuck to Derf’s theory about classroom snacks anyhow. She might trust Professor Marchand, but that didn’t mean she entirely trusted everything else. Not anymore. It even took her a moment to acknowledge the professor, standing up at the front of the room like he usually did. Plus, the greeting she gave him once she had noticed him had been accompanied by only the smallest of distracted smiles. “G’morning Professor Marchand,” she said, settling into a seat near Jessa. |
Teddy walked in, quiet, head swarming with what seemed like five hundred thoughts at the same time. The room felt like a hand woven blanket wrapped around her in an early morning and the smell of hot chocolate was making her near empty tummy growl with desire. Her hand wrapped around the drink as she glanced at the colorful bubbles on the ceiling and the big box on the professor's desk. What on Earth could that be? |
Charms was definitely one of Emmeline's favorite subjects, and the fact that her Head of House taught the subject made the lessons even better and stuff. Today, though, the second year's head was buzzing with lots of unrelated thoughts; they weren't even the FUN kind of distracting thoughts, which was kinda disturbing. All the weird stuff that had been happening in the castle was weighing on the twelve-year-old's mind, especially since the Gryffindor dorms had been ransacked and the blood that kept turning up in the entrance hall came from creatures. Both of those things were just...wrong. She didn't have a better word to describe the creepy, crawly feeling that seemed to constantly twist her stomach as she wandered the castle or entered her dorm room after being away for a while and stuff. And and, today Stasya seemed all upset too. Emmeline wasn't sure why, but she knew better than to press the issue at the moment. At least, she didn't think that she should press it yet... Thoughts of current events were still swirling around the second year's head as she entered the Charms classroom, immediately making a beeline for the empty seat next to Stasya. She only paused long enough to say, "Hiii, Professor Marchand," in a sort of distant tone and to vaguely note the presence of the boxes. Normally, she would've been super curious about what was in them and stuff, but not today; curiosity about the actual lesson seemed like the farthest thing from the girl's mind right now. She slid into the vacant seat next to Stasya and said quietly, "Hi, Stas. Hiii, Jessa." 'Cause she had just noticed that Stasya was sitting near Jessa, which meant that Emmeline was in talking-range with the Ravenclaw girl too. She bit her lip and sort of twisted her fingers together in a knot underneath the desk, debating with herself over what else to say to her best friend, and how best to offer help... Somehow, she had the reallllly bad feeling that chocolate frogs wouldn't fix whatever was bothering Stasya this time. She only hoped it wasn't TOO bad and stuff... |
Text Cut: Individual Replies Here! Gaston glanced at his watch... it was almost time for class to start. He waited another moment or two for any stragglers to show up before aiming his wand at the door. It closed tightly behind him. He moved to the center of the room and addressed his students. "Good morning, class. I hope you're all doing well today..." His bright blue eyes scanned the rows. "For those of you wondering what he bubbles are for, We'll get to that soon, but for now I can at least tell you what's inside one of the boxes..." He set the smaller box under his arm on his desk and lifted the lid. "Prizes, more specifically notepads," he explained, taking a small pad of paper out of the box. "These are designed for sending messages; the paper will magically fold itself into an airplane and fly to its intended receipent..." He tore a page off of the notepad. It folded into a paper airplane and sailed toward the back of the room. "These will be awarded for creativity and participation; by the end of class, everyone will get one." "Moving on..." He turned toward the blackboard and gave a quick flick of his wand. The words FLIGHT CHARMS appeared on the board in big letters. "What do you know about flight charms? It can be the name of one of said spells, a piece of historical information about flight charms or their use, a situation in which you think a flight charm would be useful... the more out-of-the-box the better!" OOC: This reply took a bit longer than expected, sorry! You have ABOUT 24 HOURS (3:30 AM EDT [GMT-4] Nov. 3) to answer the question! Feel free to jump in at any time; just pretend your charrie has been her all along. Late arrivals will lose points. :) |

At the question, Daisy bit her lip knowing that her answer wasn't going to be spectacular. However, she raised her hand, rather nervously. "A flying charm might be useful if you are storing logs for winter. After you have felled the logs you can cast the flying charm and organise them into a nice little pile." She quickly put her hand down after saying her answer and looked towards the ground. |
Oooooh, prizes. Paper airplanes that too.. well, this was rather exciting! Etta would definitely like some flying paper airplanes. Maybe. Anywaaaaaay, Etta listened as the professor went to explain that they would be learning about flight charms. She raised a hand to answer the question. “Flying charms are basically spells where flight is involved. For example, the levitation charm or the floating charm.” Well, that was rather simple and obvious enough but it made sense. She looked down at her parchment and took notes, waiting for class to move on. |
Prizes again? Actually, the notepads sounded QUITE useful and Skylar was already imagining how she might utilize them, which was enough to stave off the fact that everyone would be getting one by the end of class. Well, that was kind of no fun if everyone got one, but hey, maybe if she was EXTRA creative, she could get two? They did sound awesome. Enough of that though, because they were talking about flight charms; which was obviously on those bubbles on the ceiling, but Etta had already mentioned levitation or floating charm. There was more though to their historical significance, which being a quidditch player, it was quite obvious. "Flying charms are placed on broomsticks since as early as 962 AD, which basically allow us to use bewitched brooms for flying purposes and enables us to fly." There was more that could be added to that, but she would let someone else elaborate if they wished to do so... |
Text Cut: Sky and Professor! Supplies for the lesson? That was a vague answer to her question, but Vivian was going to let that go for now if it meant spoiling the surprise for this lesson. All she offered was a grin for Professor Marchand. They'd know eventually, yeah? It was definitely odd for the Slytherin. The moment Sky walked in, it had only occurred to the blond on that moment that apparently she had arrived at Charms classroom first, even before her own best friend who loved the subject. She was even more confused when brunette told her that she was proud of her. "Wh-what? Why?" Vivian blinked and scooted a little to give Sky a space to sit. "Did I do something?" Oblivious and clueless, this Fairfield was. It wasn't like she had found the cure for dragonpox or some sort of disease. Then maybe she'd finally have a reason for people to be proud of her. But it was time to move on with the lesson. The content of the box that the man was holding was apparently filled with prizes, which was kinda funny. He just loved giving out prizes, didn't he? A small smile grew on Vivian's lips, but her inner competitiveness wasn't to be ignored. However, about the notepads, Vivian was curious. "Sir," the prefect raised her hand. "Is there a certain limitation as to how far the paper airplane can fly?" Because, you know, she was considering things. Would those reach places as far as, let's say, Durmstrang? Curious. And as for the discussion on flight charms, Vivian scribbled a bit on her notebook before raising her hand again to answer the real question this time. "Flight charms also work on entertaining kids, Professor," the blond said, fondly remembering a moment when her Aunt Elise placed a charm on her so she could 'fly'. Baby Vivian liked being called Super Vivi, okay? "It gives them the idea that they are flying." |
Shay was fascinatingly distracted by the bubbles on the ceiling when class was called to order. Then Professor Marchand said the word "prizes" and he had her full attention. When he described what the prizes would be, she was fascinated. The flying, self-folding notes sounded totally cool. Not that she needed any motivation in class, but still....... The first question was presented and Shay listened carefully. Quill in hand, she was ready for some serious note taking. First though, she had to come up with an answer of her own. What did she know about flight charms? After giving it a little thought, Shay decided to pose a question of her own. She raised her hand and shared her thoughts. "Professor, would Accio be considered a flight charm? I mean, when you call for your desired object, it does fly through the air to get to you." So flight is involved in the process, no? |
Patrick listened to the other answers that his classmates were giving. He really liked SKylars answer because he had been unaware of the charm on brooms. He thought of all the times his parents had used it back on their farm. Quietly Patrick jotted down what he had heard so far: Used on brooms, entertaining for kids, useful. After looking back up from his notebook he raised his hand, "My family similarly uses flight charms to be helpful on the farm. Typically it is to send the hay bails up into the hay loft, there were too many people slipping and falling, or dropping the bails to be safe anymore." He wasn't sure that his answer was actually what he was looking for, but still it was an answer none the less. |
Derf had been distracted by the bubbles ever since entering the Charms classroom. While to everyone else they were the house colors, to the thirteen year old they were shades of yellow, olive green, and blue...so there were no real conclusions to be drawn for him. Although his mind could imagine that they were house colors - given that the variety of hues were not enough to indicate the colors of the rainbow. Were they to pop them somehow? Or summon them or... Distractedly, Derf still managed to find himself a seat next to Natalie without realizing it until class had officially begun. Bubbles were distracting, you know? But once class had begun, his blue eyes swiveled to the Slytherin and he offered a bit of a sheepish grin and accompanying hair ruffle. Speaking of distractions. Swallowing, Derf turned his attention forward as the professor began speaking. Prizes were something he had come to expect from the Charms professor, but THESE were particularly neat. He could not remember where he had put his eraser previously received...but notepads...with ENCHANTED paper? Know what would be neat? Being taught the charm that made paper do THAT. Which made the Hufflepuff's heart feel a bit crestfallen since it was clear that that was NOT what they were going to be learning today. Or perhaps he was assuming too early...but it would be NEAT to learn to charm paper to fold itself into a paper airplane and then send them off up towards the bubbles to pop them, yeah? Maybe. But right...Flight Charms... Derf's eyes looked up at the bubbles once more and instantly thought about Levicorpus. Only that was a jinx and not a charm...not even a Dark charm. Which made his gaze briefly fall on Jessa for a moment. "And flying carpets," he added to Skylar's response. "Or...really any object you want to make fly...like automobiles..." Er...that really wasn't adding all that much to the conversation now, was he? Back up to the bubbles went his gaze and then up went a pointed finger. "Reckon a Flight Charm could help us pop those bubbles...Rocket Charm maybe." Imagine launching each other up in the air.... |
Ohaaaai, Derf. Natalie smiled into her cocoa mug when she saw Derf sit next to her and ruffle his hair. The signature hair ruffle. Cute, wasn't it? Natalie silently offered him one of her shortbread cookies as class began, pleased to be sitting by a good friend. Natalie was also pleased that there would be PRIZES. She liked being rewarded for things and not just with house points. Notepads were nice. Then maybe she could learn how to charm the notes to flyyyy so she could send things to Derf easier because climbing ALL those flights of stairs just to see him was really a struggle. Anyway, flight charms. There were broomsticks, yes, and flying carpets (which were COOL) and... was the levitating charm considered a flight charm? That was a good question. Natalie zoned out a little bit when a first year in her house started talking about hay bales and people slipping and falling and... yeah, she got lost. "Peeves can fly," she said suddenly, remembering something else that could fly. "But... that's probably not a charm." Because he was a poltergeist and could do things that some people and some ghosts couldn't do... Perhaps she should have thought more before speaking out. |
