The Astronomy classroom was brightly lit, perhaps a little too brightly lit for nearing midnight. It seemed Kalen was trying all sorts of different ways to keep the students awake and attentive in the late hour. A cool January breeze drifted through one of the open windows of the tower, giving the room a comfortable if not slightly chilly feel. Everything looked normal enough though, the desks were arranged how they usually were, in neat rows with names on them. Assigned seating was preferred by this Professor.

There was however a small door at the back of the room that wasn’t usually there, now where could that lead to?

As for Kalen himself, he could be found leaning against his desk, ankles crossed as he waited for his students to arrive. A small smile on his face, earlier he had been disappointed by the clouds obscuring the view of the lesson tonight, but the Librarian had found a way around it and he was most pleased with himself.

Come on in and find a seat! Class will begin soon!

OOC: Welcome to the first Astronomy class! Feel free to have their assigned seat anywhere you would like. Just remember that even though this is the first Rp’d class this is not your first class with Professor Kennedy! Come on in, say Hi and we will continue on in about 24 hours.. ish! Also please keep the chatting to a minimum! Class has started! All late comers were face IC consequences, so feel free to pretend like your Charrie was here all along.

Kalen looked down at Zoryn and he shook his head a bit. “Actually I have a lesson later on in the term that will cover everything and clear it up. But thank you two for catching it.” Kalen rarely gave extra points in his class.

Kalen turned back to the rest of the class and clapped his hands. “All right, everyone practice time is up. Now I want everyone to come with me. ” He said as he moved over to the door he had talked about and opened it. As he did, half the wall slid back as well, revealing a room that was dark and filled with what looked like a several sections of the same piece of sky. The ceiling was covered with the sections as were some of the walls.

“Follow me inside everyone! ” He said as he walked in and stood in the middle. “Now all around us, everyone will see the same section of sky. The section where Orion is placed. If you look closely you can see his sword as well as his head, however you all might notice that the seven main stars are missing from these sections.” He said as he looked around.

“What we will be doing today is placing the stars in their proper places using the spell we just learned, like so.” Kalen took out his wand, traced a star and said Stellaris. A sparkly ball of light appeared and he nudged it with his wand, it flew up to a section of sky and stopped where Bellatrix should have been.

“Fun huh?” He said with a grin.

“So everyone pick a section, there is one for each of you and start filling it in with your stars. If you need a reference for where things go, the the picture is on the board. If anyone needs any help or has any questions, please let me know.” He said as he motioned for everyone to start.

OOC: Welcome to the main activity! Everyone just need to conjure “stars” (sparkly balls of light, not actual stars) And place then in the sections of sky to form Orion. No minimum post count for this, feel free to do it in one post or five! Just label the posts if you have more than one. If you need Kalen put his name up in the header! Thanks! Class will move on in about 72 hours or soThanks!!

After folding his blanket and abandoning his coffee (it was getting cold now, anyway), he joined the rest of the class in following, following, following Professor Kennedy into....a room of black holes? How did those have anything to do with constellations? Oh, no, wait, they were sections of sky. That made much more sense. So this was how they were getting around the cloudy sky this evening. Ronan had to admit that this was actually pretty cool.

He didn't know if he would call the activity fun though. Especially since he had kind of zoned out when all the talk about Orion had happened, so he had no idea about which star went where. Ooops? Maybe if he watched one of his classmates...?

Ronan stood and quietly casted "Stellaris." and a silent Finte over and over until he got some idea of what his neighbor was doing.

Blink, blink. Okay, so in Skylar defense, she liked Mr Kalen Kennedy. For one, he read a TON of books and she did find him to be incredibly intelligent. But the fifth year did NOT like the fact that they were creating these star illusions. Faux stars. It just seemed .... well, not real. And with good reason, considering it wasn't. Like what was the point of this and how would knowing how to create a ball of light help her on her OWLs? Could this replace lumos?

But enough thoughts for the moment, because they were continuing on and it seemed they had to complete the pattern of Orion in a blank patch of sky. Not too difficult, really, but still, the fifth year question the practicality of this spell.

"Stell-AIR-is" she said, as a bright light emerged from her wand, plopping itself into the center of her blank patch. Okay, six more 'stars' to go.

This was going stellar for Kirk. As he had practiced with the rest of the class on the wand movement. Sure, it was cool how Orion and Scorpius had their rivalry in the stars though it seemed that Orion would have more favour between the two. Creating stars though.. hmm.. He could imagine some good use for this decoration wise. He had an enchanted night ceiling stars back home. "Professor, how long does this spell last for?" Maybe he could replace the muggle stars above his own bed here..

For the first part, Kirk began to trace out the star before exclaiming, "Stell-AIR-is." Perhaps his interest in the constellations made this quite a calming task as one emerged from his wand nearly perfect onto the patch. One star down, now for the next.

Flynn was practicing his wand movement, trying to perfect it, when all of a sudden something hit him in the forehead.

.... um ....

Not only did something hit his forehead, but it had actually burned on contact. He furrowed his brows whilst turning his attention to no other than Derfael. Oh, PuffBoy, if ONLY looks could kill. IF ONLY LOOKS COULD KILL, Ashburry-Hawthorne!

He was about to open his mouth and say something to the boy, but everyone was now moving into the room behind the mysterious door. He pushed himself out of his seat and walked up to the Hufflepuff, bending over some to make sure he was heard clearly. "You better be glad Professor Kennedy is here," he hissed. He straightened himself back up and followed the group into the room.

Oh WOW. This was cool! Except not really. It was all fake but.... who was he kidding? It was cool. He listened to the instructions, found his spot under the constellation, and pointed his wand in front of him. "Stellaris," he said in almost a whisper as he outlined a star with his wand. He was so proud of himself when a little ball of light appeared (this was a much better attempt than his last one!), and he pushed the ball of light into his part of the constellation.

He was enjoying this star-making experience.

Practice time was...over? Clara had barely felt confident about the one good star she had conjured previously. But she supposed that jumping into things was probably the best way to learn. She just had to get rid of this sort of "if I don't succeed the first time, I'm a failure" mentality. It had been a part of her childhood and she was doing her best to erase it. It was just the healthy thing to do, after all.

She looked up at the ceiling, her eyes moving from one end to the other. Hm...which section to pick. After seeing which sections her other classmates were focused on, Clara found the right-most section to be the most empty at the moment and fixated on that particular patch as she raised her wand. Taking a deep breath, she said, "Stellaris!"

She watched as a shimmery ball of light made its way to the center of the patch. She exhaled happily. Her other classmates were having success with their balls of light as well. The ceiling above them was slowly changing. So far, so good. Just a few more to go, now...

The third year was quite literally holding his breath while waiting for the older Slytherin to react. Many possibilities flashed through the blonde's head as he observed Flynn - most of them to do with hexes and an eye for an eye mentality - so when all he got was a stare the 13-year-old was noticeably relieved. Maybe even a LITTLE disappointed in a way because, well, he was used to these kind of stares. Immune really. So Derf simply griiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinned at the older boy nervously and nodded his head vigorously when mention of the professor came up.

Nod nod nod nod nod.

Aaaaaaand practice was over...and Derf had not yet managed to perform the spell properly. Eh, what else was new? Collecting himself and his wand, Derf got out of his seat and followed everyone through the door to...ooooooh...this was SORTA neat. If only he could DO the spell, you know? The third year tended to work better under pressure...you know...in the heat of the moment kind of thing where one relied on their reflexes. It was why he was semi decent at dueling...so this would be even MORE neat (for him) if this had been a game. Since...you know...the little fake stars were glowing different colors and stuff (which he wasn't sure WHY they were glowing other colors and he could really only barely make out the differences because the shade of olive kinda changed now and then) ... like...a RACE between houses. FILL IN THE GAPS! Like...he had played this game with his dad once with putting pieces together and like...if you sandwiched your pieces with your opponent's then they all turned into yours and stuff. Just the pretty line of starts in constellations made him think about that.

Although he couldn't remember the name of the game....and now he was also forgetting the spell he was supposed to do sooooooooo time to observe his classmates. And by classmates...he really meant Flynn because he was standing RIGHT next to the older boy.

"Oh right! Stellaris!" he nodded, pulling his wand from and tracing a star in the air once more. "Stel-lar-IS!" Soon a little ball of light began to form at the dip of his wand - although it sorta looked more like oozing hot lava in white - and he quickly held his wand upside down...which basically turned his wand into one of those sparkler fireworks because NOW his little ball of light WAS shooting off little sparks this way and that with a soft fiiiiiiiiiizzing sound.

And then the little ball detatched from the tip of his wand and fell on the ground. A low soft hiiiiiiiiss later...and it was no more.

"Oh."

Could he get a....gold star for effort?

Kalen was leaning on a desk as he watched the kids fill in their constellations and he nodded over at Kirk as he asked his question.

“Well I have a few in my office that have been there for a few months, it all depends on the intent behind it really. But they can last for awhile if you concentrate.” He said with a smile as he looked around.

So far everyone seemed to be doing okay.

“Twenty minutes left.” He said as he looked around.

Man, the librarian was SO stingy!!! He wasn't even willing to give away a couple of points, yet he had no issue with taking them. Talk about grumpy, amirightladies?

Zoryn was utterly disappointed and had no actual desire to do anything else in the lesson. But knowing that the librarian was points happy, she'd probably have to look like she was doing SOMETHING so that he'd be appeased. Moving her wand in the shape of a star, she practiced the spell a couple of times. "Stellaris," she began. "Stellaris, Stellaris,
Stellaris!" Of course with her attention clearly on all the stars around the room, the Gryffindor's intent was real wonky and her spell wasn't actually working.

But y'know, at least she was trying?

"Stellaris."

Oh, so that's what that door was for. Oh. Okay.

It went without saying that the Ravenclaw would have much preferred her idea of what the door was for but there was nothing to be done about it now. This was the direction the Professor was taking the door in and it looked like they'd be playing a game of connect the dots. Sort o a game anyway...more like an activity.

Jessa rose from her seat, side eyeing the subtle confrontation between Flynn and her bestfriend. It was hard to miss the look he shot his way and Jessa wasn't pleased.

Not wanting to give him the satisfaction of attention, Jessa turned instead to the room, following the man and the rest of the class inside. As he instructed, the 15 year old picked a spot with an incomplete Orion. This one was well out of the way of everyone else and would provide enough space for her to attempt this spell both ways. Believe it or not, she still hadn't decided whether she wanted to go strictly non-verbal.

Perhaps....just once verbally--but would that technically break her resolve to not cast another spell if she couldn't do it non-verbally....

She had...in Ancient Runes, to carve a rune so maybe...maybe breaking for this too wouldn't be so bad. Conflicted, Jessa drew her wand and took aim at the empty spot in the belt. She knew, for the most part, what this constellation was meant to look like when she was done. That wouldn't be the challenge here, figuring how she would do the spell was.

"Stellaris." She uttered, her intent focused on a ball of light appearing to fill the void. It's actual appearance was confirmation enough; this wasn't a difficult spell, the hardest part would indeed be trying it non-verbally. Jessa frowned at the unfinished diagram. How would she get this done? For a few seconds, she focused on pure intent, trying to remember the feeling when she'd cast verbally.

If she could just replicate it....the wand already knew what she wanted it to do.....

Again, Jessa drew the wand movement, the shape of a star but left out the incantation. All her focus went into her intent, her mind focusing on nothing else. It quickly became clear this would be as difficult as re-learning any of the other spells in her arsenal. Hmm. She drew the star again, channeling everything she had into creating another ball of light. The way the tip of her wand flickered was promising enough but it was no ball of light.

For a wand that sometimes liked to go off on it's own, it was acting proper skeptic about casting without an incantation.

All it would really take was getting into the right groove. Finding out what made non-verbals successful in the first place. The formula that worked for her and her wand but for right now, the most she accomplished at a time was the flicker at the end of her wand before the familiar feeling of disappointment. Ugh. This was going nowhere any time soon.

This was so COOOOL.

"Stellaaaaaaaris," Natalie sung to herself as she hopped out of her chair. She was glad that Ravenclaw Prefect had asked how long the spell would last. A few months?! Well, she was definitely going to master this spell and decorate her room with stars. Practice made perfect, right?

Natalie followed everyone into the dark room where they would be putting together the constellation. And since they no longer had assigned seats, Natalie slid up beside Derf and looped her arm through his, having just witnessed his little star fall to the ground and fizzle out. "Let's work together," she said cheerfully, offering him an optimistic smile.

"Stellaris," she said again, but halfway through her star shape, her wand just shot out sparks for a couple seconds and then that was it.

As a few more minutes passed, Clara had gotten three more stars up on the ceiling. Only three more to go.

"Stellaris!" she exclaimed proudly as another ball of light appeared onto the ceiling. This one had a bit of a blue tint to it, almost like periwinkle or sky blue. It blended it beautifully with the darkness surrounding but stood out just enough so that the eye could spot it easily.

This is actually quite fun, she thought. Maybe it was just the satisfaction of actually getting the spell to work, but that didn't really matter in that moment.

She steadied her wand arm as she said the incantation twice more and watched as two more balls of light made their way onto the patch, settling around the other balls of light that were already there.

Already done with her patch, she gazed around to take a look at everyone else's progress. The illumination was growing slowly but surely, and it was honestly quite interesting to watch. Her eyes found their way back to her own patch, where, to her delight, the balls of light were still shimmering brightly, unmoved and still.

After a few minutes of quiet observation.......Ronan was no closer to figuring out which stars went where. Sigh. So, to the good ol' standby it was. Meaning, guessing. He pointed his wand towards his sky patch and muttered the spell "Stellaris." Letting the 'star' land where it wanted, he stood back and looked. Seemed okay to him. But if he'd been paying any attention when Professor Kennedy was showing the way Orion should look, he'd know he was waaaayyy off.

Ooops?

A few months....Derf would honestly be lucky if he got his to last a few MINUTES. But hey, they both started with 'm' at least so that was PROGRESS? Rubbing his foot over the spot where his light had fizzled out on the floor, Derf ruffled his hair and tried to mentally ~~and emotionally~~ prepare himself for another go at the spell when he gave a bit of a jolt at someone linking arms with him.

To his RELIEF...it was not the older Slytherin - because THAT would have meant something really bad was about to happen and Derf was having enough of a hard time focusing without that additional distraction - but Natalie. His bright blues lit up a bit and grinned. "Okay!"

But now there was a DIFFERENT sort of distraction and the Hufflepuff really wasn't quite sure how to deal with it. Although he did learn one thing for sure...he had been sorta saying the incantation wrong.

"At least it shot out sparks!" he chirped with his own shade of optimism. "You know...instead of something off topic." Sparks were still light and stuff, you know? Clearing his throat, Derf gave tracing the star in the air another go. "Stellaris!" A little ball of light appeared again, this time without the after effects of a sparkler, but it didn't really fly OFF his wand and just sorta...stuck to the tip. Like a glowing lollipop.

Etta walked through the mysterious door.. and there was sky everywhere. Interesting. She looked around curiously, absently listening to what the professor said. Huh. The activity was simple enough, of course. Since she’d already practiced the spell quite well.. the girl turned to look at the picture on the board for a moment, just to check where the stars were supposed to go before pulling out her wand.

The girl took a deep breath and said, “Stellaris” and watched as the light appeared, gently pushing it towards a patch of sky. Great, now she was going to try it non-verbally. Hopefully, it would be just as easy.

It seemed they were both on the right track, but just coming up a little short. Yes, sparks were better than.. bubbles, she supposed. Natalie giggled a little, just enjoying Derf's company. She was taking the lesson rather lightheartedly. No sense in getting worked up when it didn't work the first time.

When Derf started working again, Natalie observed, still glued to his side. "Yay!" she cheered when a light orb appeared...

"Oh." It was stuck on the end of his wand. "Err.. trying waving it off..?" That's what she would do. Perhaps not the safest route, but maybe it was just stuck? It just needed some ENCOURAGEMENT.

Kalen glanced up at the clock and then he clapped his hands.

“All right everyone time is up, so grab your things and head to bed. I want a roll of parchment on Orion, especially the stars we studied today. ” He said as he looked around.

“Have a good night! ”

OOC: That’s all guys! Thanks for coming! I’ll leave this thread open for another 24 hours before locking it.

Well..at least the ball wasn't growing anymore so THAT was something. Ruffling his hair with one hand, Derf glanced at Natalie and nodded. "That might work," he agreed, giving his wand a bit of a flick to try and relieve his wand of the little ball of light.

Only it seemed like it really wanted to STAY attached to his wand.

Er...maybe if he waved it HARDER?

Straightening himself a bit, Derf waved his wand about a bit more enthusiastically...but STILL the ball didn't seem to want to come off. "Comeoooooooon," he whined. He was, what, about 85% done with the spell at this point and now that final 15% was just getting the light OFF his wand and into the fake sky.

But then the librarian called class, leaving Derf feeling particularly sheepish since, well, the ball was STILL stuck to the tip of his wand. "I can walk you back to your common room if you want?" he offered Natalie as he moved to gather his things. Since it was LATE and the castle was DARK and he had the light...and also...it was LATE and DARK and there were TERRIBLE things happening at Hogwarts so he was worried, you know?
