Post Transfiguration Lesson One - Smoke to Daggers

The afternoon of December first was a chilly one, snow had fallen earlier in the day and there was a slight breeze that blew the fallen snow about the grounds. It's a good thing Professor Stewart choose to do her lesson inside even though one would suggest that this was most likely an outdoor lesson.

At exactly ten minutes to two in the afternoon, the door to the Transfiguration classroom swung open as normal. The room was differently set up then normal. All the desks and chairs were gone, including Professor Stewart's. Instead there's three outdoor fire-pits with two half circle seats that holds seven students (each pit can have 14 students sit around it). These pits and seating are in a straight line, one after the other, the room having been expanding to make it more comfortable.

On the left side of the room is a single seat which the professor is sat on waiting for you to arrive, a warm smile on her face. A smaller fire-pit sat burning before her just like each of the other pits. Wisps of smoke billowing up towards the ceiling and around the room but it doesn't smell like smoke, nor is it hard to breath. There's a quiet, relaxing crackling coming from the fires but otherwise the room is silent.

Besides what you already see there is no other hints towards the days lesson. The large blackboard that is beside the Professors seat only has a few instructions on it.

Quote:
Take a seat and make yourself comfortable.
Each fire was being magically contained to a certain height, temperature and there would be no sparks from the fire leaping about.

She would never missed transfiguration class, okay? Ava had been here already thankfully before Professor C started the lesson. Sitting not too far from Shay, Noelle and Olly, the Gryffindor listened to the professor about what they're going to learn today. She thought that they might be burning something or just related to the fire, but she was not really correct. In fact, it's about the smoke.

Raising her hand, Ava answered the Professor's question. "In addition to what Skylar said about smoke as a sign that there's a fire, it's also can be used when someone's being lost in the middle of forest so hopefully the rescue team or someone else can find and save them." Just like in the movies.

To be honest Olly hadn't even been thinking about the possibility of cooking snacks, but he should have been. That sounded like a great idea. Too bad Professor Stewart only mentioned it to say that's not what they were doing. Except she did say they might be able to at the end. Olly really wanted to. If they concentrated and got done early they might be able to do it. Which meant he would really pay attention.

What was the importance of smoke? Um. "When people burn incense or something don't people use the smoke because it has healing powers or something?" Or maybe not. Olly didn't know anything.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta really did wonder what they were going to be doing with fire pits though.. it was so weird but she knew that the professor wouldn't give an explanation until later. She focused on answering her question for now.. which was again.. a little weird. Usefulness of fire smoke? She'd never considered that question before. The girl remained in thought for a while, not able to come up anything that innovative.

"Um.. professor.. like someone mentioned, it's probably used for Divination purposes.. right? To predict the future or something like that? And.. uh.. smoke contains soot? And certain chemicals too. " .. that was all she could guess. Oh, well. Now, she just waited for class to move on, her parchment and quill ready to take notes.

What was smoke useful for? Hmm... That was a good question. Olivia stayed silent for the first part and tried to figure out her thoughts on the question. Hmm... Well smoke could be used to signal. Smoke signals. Smoke could be use for divination... There was the smokescreen spell which created a diversion and clouded the other person's vision so that it was harder to find their opponent. Hmm... Yep. That was all Olivia had on that. She raised her hand. "Could smoke be used as a diversion?" she offered.

Felicity covered her mouth with a hand when Vivian pouted and put her marshmallows away, stifling the laugh that she would possibly be reprimanded for. She offered her friend a consoling smile, before turning to the question at hand.

Smoke. But... These fires were smoke-less. And... Oh, she guessed that really, it didn't matter: if they were to be using smoke in this lesson, the Professor would surely make it happen at the right time. Although, as of yet, Felicity wasn't sure how smoke could be used. People had mentioned signalling, and Divination, but this was Transfiguration, and she was already lost.

She didn't very well want to put her hand up and say that smoke was the main cause of fire-related deaths, but that was her only knowledge on the matter. So Felicity stayed quiet, listening to the other answers.

To be honest, Matt wasn't surprised when the professor said they wouldn't be eating in today's lesson. Maybe 'at the end of it' and 'if they had time', which basically meant they weren't having any since there was never really any time left at teh end of lessons.

They were talking about smoke. Actually, Matt liked the smell of smoke, and he missed it at the moment, even though he was sitting pretty much in front of a fire. Not approving of the charm work going on there that day. "It can be used for communication!" Rah!

Well, that's weird. Kirk thought. All these pits just had the making for s'mores and they weren't making any today. Don't get his thoughts wrong though, he wasn't going to be slacking off now. There was still a chance that today's lesson wouldn't disappoint him once the first question came... Supposedly. As he leaned back casually.

Everyone seemed to be making the same answer with smoke, it was pretty obvious on what it can do. But he had another idea, "Smoke can let you know that you messed up. Like when you're brewing a potion, cooking, or even heating your hair. If it's smoking, then you did something wrong by letting it burn for too long." There. That had to be a new one.

Oh look, there was Emmeline joining them by the fire. Much like she'd originally neglected to notice her friends when she'd first gotten there, the young girl may have failed to notice her too if it hadn't been for the verbal greeting. Jessa offered her a wide smile before turning her attention back to the Professor.

Yep, this was the one class she would miss NOTHING in. No distractions.

The mention of an extendable ear was almost enough to grab her attention....but only almost. Blue eyes remained locked on the woman as she began her lesson, listening keenly for what would no doubt be a great lesson today. Couldn't go wrong with fire, y'know?

"It's also an interesting fact to note that more people die of smoke inhalation than the actual fires when they break out." While they were on the subject of smoke. Would they be making their own smoke or learning how to transfigure it into something else?? She was down for either to be honest.

Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.

Shay was on one side of her and Olly on the other. She grinned happily. Leaning into olly per usual as a greeting, she didn't get to say much before the class was starting.

Once the professor started talking about smoke, Noelle glances around the room noticing that it wasn't too overwhelming and it didn't smell... smokey in here. Odd. This was Transfiguration though. Professor Stewart being a wiz. She wondered what they would be doing today. If it involved smoke, maybe it was Fumus Lamina, turning smoke into weapons. Hmm.

"Smoke can also be used as a symbol to get out. Like if it's a lot of smoke coming from a room. Don't go in there. Or get out of your house."

Hmmm... Smoke... Sophie tapped her pencil against her nose, mulling over the question at hand. There was that saying about where there's smoke, there's fire. But it was a little overused...

A brilliant idea suddenly slapped her over the head. Snagging her fingers and raising her arm into the air, she leapt from her seat. "SMOKE SIGNALS!!!" She felt her outburst had been a little out of the blue, so she hurried to explain. "Like, if a Muggle was stuck on an island in the middle of the ocean, they could start a big fire that could create tons of smoke. Most ships nearby would be able to see the smoke above the horizon and would recognize it as a signal for help. You know, like a flare thingy or something!!

Hastily realizing how awkward she sounded, Sophie plopped back into her seat. Her face burned a bright red and her hands shook a little bit. Whoops... Maybe she shouldn't be so spontaneous next time...

It FINALLY occurred to Emmeline that Abey must be on the other end of the Extendable Ears. Plus, she sort of heard his voice a little through the line. Grinning at Derf, she tried to call back quietly: "Hiii!" For Abey, obviously.

Emmeline returned Jessa's smile, though she did notice the third year was a lot more attentive than usual to the professor today. That was cool, that's what they were supposed to be doing. In fact, Jessa's behavior encouraged Emmeline to pay more attention to Professor Stewart once she started speaking. They were doing stuff with smoke? That could be super fun! She smirked in a secretive way, because she was thinking that James would regret skipping this lesson unless he showed up late. He would LOVE these fire pit things.

But back to smoke, right. Raising her hand, she answered: "It's really easy to choke on smoke, Professor." She paused in confusion, because now that she thought about it..."Is this magic smoke, Professor? Shouldn't there be A LOT more smoke in here?"

OH YAY THE EXTENDABLE EARS WERE WORKING! Not that the Hufflepuff had any real doubts about that. They had been working all term so far and he HAD just bought a little after start of term so they were NEW and well taken care of. Even wrapped them up in a special towel at the end of the day and tucked them safely away in his trunk!

"Uuuuuum...there are FIRE PITS-S," he reported back, his blue eyes darting around the room for anything else of note. "Oh. And Stasya says-s-s hello! Well...no...s-s-she told me to s-say 'hi' not 'hello'...but s-she says-s hi!"

Grinning at Stasya, his eyes couldn't help but wander over to the marshmallow yielding Syltherin. Jessa got a small wave as well as she settled into her seat and he was JUST about to explain to Emmeline about the Extendable Ears when Professor Stewart officially started the lesson.

"We're talking about s-s-smoke," he whispered into the Ear again, just in case Abey hadn't heard properly. But what did he know about smoke? "You can make s-signals out of it!" he chirped. "OH! And Minerva McGonagall us-s-sed it as a WEAPON!"

Oh, Professor...

Soooo, they were going to doing something with smoke...? For this lesson? Olivia had to wonder if the actual smoke could be magically contained and then transfigured into a physical object... Imagine how difficult that would be? She desperately wanted to learn, and was improving, but there was still a long way to go.

As for...the question at hand, Olivia was going to agree with Olly. Hello, Olly. "For medicine, but also in meditation. People burn incense in oil to induce a feeling of calm." She supposed that could be considered with healing. Eh, that was for the Professor to sort. Above her pay grade.

"Also, muggles use a thing for vaporizing. I'm not sure if that would fall into the category of 'smoke', though."

Cue the pout.

The student who arrived after Vivian was rather unfamiliar and definitely a stranger. However, the Slytherin wasn't going to pretend that she didn't say anything because that was rude, and so she smiled at the girl. "Hello, fellow early person." Because this was rare. Vivian had never been the first person to class.

The blonde was glad to see her she-snake squad entering the room. Vivian beamed at both Felicity and Skylar because duh. "Hello, friends!" She called out for them since she had saved them both seats near her, and another for Junia if she ever came. As for the marshmallows, Vivian shrugged. "I would've brought more if we were told about the fire-pits, you know." What a missed opportunity! "But will three packs be enough?" She'd give up all her marshmallows for a day like this. They could even make Smores!

But the click from the door meant that the lesson was about to start. Vivian had prepared her three packs of marshmallows and placed them all on her LAP, in case they were given the cue to start roasting. The smile on Vivian's face faded when Professor Stewart said that it would wait for maybe later on. Cue even more pouting. The Slytherin tucked the packs back into her bag, but she still remained hopeful for the end of the lesson.

With the first question raised, Vivian blinked. The importance of... smoke? She wanted to say nothing, because it was bad for the health and the lungs. However, she didn't want to seem pessimistic. Everything had a good purpose though, right? Once she had an answer in mind, the blonde raised her hand. "There's capnomancy, Professor, or the divination involving smoke." Aside from that, there really wasn't anything good about it... just sayin'.

With a question such as the one she had just asked, Camilla Stewart was ready for any answer these students tossed her way. Most what she was expecting from them was that it was harmful and how it hurt people and nature but she knew now that these kids were smart. "Capnomancy! Very good, Miss Fairfield." With a flick of her wrist 'Capnomancy' appeared on the blackboard beside her.

SPOILER!!: Skylar!

Think.

"Uh, well, smoke is useful to know that there's a fire burning, so use caution when in the area." That was such a lame use, but it was true. Fire burning equaled smoke equaled possibility of burning or injuring yourself.

"As a caution. That's a good answer and very true. If there's a lot of smoke it could very well be a warning that something has happened and the area could be dangerous." Camilla smiled adding 'As a caution to dangerous situations' onto the board.

Anyway, the Gryffindor listened to the first question of the day. With food still on her mind, she gave her answer. "Smoke is good for giving barbecued food a wonderful flavor. It's a flavor that you just can't get otherwise." That was unless you used liquid smoke and even that wasn't quite the same. Shay knew that this was probably not the answer the professor was looking for, but it was a valid answer......she thought so anyway.

Camilla laughed softly nodding her head in agreement. "That smoky flavor on barbecued food really is something special, isn't it?" Way to think out of the box on this one Shay. The answer was also added onto the board.

Another very good answer indeed, which Cami added onto the board with a flick of her wand. "As a beckon if you're lost. Smoke signals could definitely come in handy for that." Might just save the persons life.

"Correct. It can and is used in different forms of Divination for more then one reason I'm sure." Like with most things there was more than one way to use it to suit your own purposes.

A diversion. Professor Stewart smiled at Olivia and nodded flicking her wand at the board where her answer then appeared. "Definitely!

Professor Stewart shifted in her seat making it easier to flick her wand at the board beside her so the answer appeared there. "This is very true. If you're cooking and you smell smoke that most certainly is a sign that you may have cooked the food to long or have the heat turned up to high. Smoke during a potion brewing can indeed be a sign that you did something wrong." Another very good answer.

SPOILER!!: Jessa!

This answer was both sad but true. "Correct. Smoke inhalation is very dangerous which is why the fires before you all have been magically altered. Which is why even though there is smoke about the room and above your heads from the fires the smell isn't very strong if you even smell it at all nor is it very thick at all." There would be no worries about the students falling ill due to smoke today.

SPOILER!!: Noelle!

"This is true. Smoke makes a very good warning sign to keep out." The reply was added onto the board in the same fashion as all the others.

SPOILER!!: Sophie!

"Yes! Smoke signals would be very helpful to you should you ever get stranded on an island or anywhere else." Camilla smiled at Sophie's answer and the excitement she was giving off.

SPOILER!!: Emmeline!

"That is quite true. Have you noticed how even though the there's smoke in this room it isn't hard to breath?" she smiled adding the young girls answer onto the board. "It is magically altered smoke, yes. I didn't want anyone having a hard time breathing or being unable to see during the lesson."

SPOILER!!: Derf!

"You can make signals out it, yes." Very good. It was what Derf said next that made Camilla grinned broadly and stand up from her seat. "Yes! The question is how? Do you know how it was used as a weapon?" She was certainly curious to know if he did.

SPOILER!!: Olivia!
Quote:

"All very good and correct answers." The women added the replies onto the board before turning her full attention back onto the class.

Still standing on her feet, Camilla looked at the board and the class. "All of your answers are correct. As you can see smoke is more helpful then one might normally think and can be used for many different things." She paused a moment before continuing. "As a warning of danger, as a beckon for help, a distraction from a possibly dangerous situation, healing and so much more." There was just as many ways it could help someone as it could harm them.

Turning and picking up a something from where it had been tucked away nicely on the side of seat, the professor unwrapped it from the white cloth that was covering it. "I'm sure you all know what this is," she spoke holding the item up but it's handle.

SPOILER!!: Dagger!

She carefully slipped the sheath from the dagger before holding it up once more for them all to see. "I am going to pass this around so everyone can get a closer look." With that said she slid the sheath back on before handing it off to the student closest to her, handle first of course. "You may remove the sheath to have a better look but you do not have to do so but make sure to put the sheath back on before passing it to the next person. There will be no messing about, no waving it around or pointing it at anyone. It's very much real and very much sharp. So don't go touching the tip or the blade." So no playing around will be tolerated.

"Take not of it's shape. It's weight. What it's made of." Camilla watched as it was passed from one student to the next. "What might we use one for? How could we acquire one if we didn't have one on hand?" Just something to think about and reply to as the dagger was passed around the room.

OOC: Those were some great replies everyone! Cami is passing around a dagger for each student to look at/hold (it is in a sheath! so no injuries please). There's two main questions this time "What might we use one for?" and "How could we acquire one if we didn't have one on hand?"

I will be moving forward in about 24 hours

The smile on Vivian's face became more and more evident. She hoped that her good performance in class today would merit a few minutes of roasting and eating the marshmallow she had brought to class. She listened to the answers of her fellow classmates, and nodded at the points made by most of them. However, the Slytherin was still quite convinced that smoke was bad, unless it came from a source of fire used for cooking. That case, it'd be a good kind of smoke.

Anyway... it was time to move on with the lesson. Vivian's attention was caught when a dagger revealed. The blonde couldn't help but blink. "What is she going to do with that...?" She asked her fellow she-snake squad because, honestly, it was quite dangerous to have such a sharp object in here. Sure, they were mature but she totally didn't trust the younger students with that. Just saying.

The Slytherin waited for her turn to be able to hold the dagger. Once she did, she looked and analysed it closely, from the tip to tip. It was really shiny... and, by the looks of it, really sharp. It wasn't that heavy to hold, just about the right weight for an average person to carry around. Though the handle part was heavier than the blade, probably because it was made of something sturdy to avoid loosing grip. As for the Professor's questions, the fourth year passed the dagger to the person beside her before raising her hand. "I'd most probably use it for defense, Professor," Vivian said, nodding. What else would she do with such a dagger, anyway? Not like she wanted to cause any harm. "And if I didn't have one, I'd Transfigure something into a dagger."

... Well, why else would they be attending a Transfiguration class? Duh.

SUMMER FOREVER

A dagger? Etta raised an eyebrow, not sure where this lesson was heading towards. First smoke? And now.. this? What was the point of a dagger in transfiguration? The curiosity made her want to ask the professor all the questions but she held her tongue. She didn't want to simply distrupt the class.. she could wait, yeah? She waited until the dagger was passed to her before carefully studying it. Hmm. She removed it from the sheath to get a better look.

What might it be used for? Etta wasn't exactly sure. "Professor.. I honestly don't understand or know.. I mean, a dagger? In this day and age? It actually looks more like a relic to me." As for the next question, she gave a small smile and a shrug of the shoulders. "Probably borrow from someone who does?" That was a rather cheeky answer but you know.. be different. She carefully placed the dagger back into the sheath before passing it on to her classmate.

Rooney gave the dagger a once over as it was passed to him and then passed it along pretty quickly. He wasn't feeling up to being in class today. He had been slaving over letters to the universities that had rejected his applications to convince them that he did have career ambitions in the field he was wanting to study, and he just wanted to get those letters finished up and sent off. There was too much at stake to accept rejections so easily. It was pretty evident that he wasn't completely here and present...that was if anyone properly gave him a look instead of the dagger that students were no doubt going to be all over and whispering about in the next minute or so.

"What could I use it for? To cut my sandwiches in half instead of a measly butter knife, Professor. I bet there wouldn't be unnecessary bread tears with your blade." And now he was thinking about sandwiches... Ham and cheese... oooh yummy...

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Had she been wondering or worrying about the smoke? Probably not. To be perfectly honest, in the absence of any real reaction to the smoke, the girl had all but forgotten about it. When the stuff rising to the ceiling didn't trigger your asthma, there was a good chance it was magic in the first place and not entirely something that needed to be a concern of hers. You could even say Jessa figured something like that was the case after walking and and still being able to breathe correctly so while she felt the Professor's response to her was very useful for anyone that might have been wondering, she wasn't particularly fussed.

Her attention was instead on the dagger that had just been revealed, the one that was now making its way around the room.

Very sharp, no playing around, don't touch the blade. Right. Got it.

Jessa accepted the dagger from the person sat directly to her left and unsheathed it to have a better look even as she offered up her own response. "I think it could also be used to get you out of a sticky spot, Professor. Like if you've been tied up, or you need to cut through something." Because it was super sharp, right? Seemed like the perfect escape tool if you asked her.

Once she'd had her look, Jessa passed it on. "Like Vivian, I'd try to transfigure something into a dagger too. It seems the easiest and most convenient option when you haven't got one but need it." Plus the young girl loved any excuse to have to transfigure something. It was sometimes difficult at first but once you got the hang of it, it was hella rewarding.

This boy would definitely have used smoke for cooking. Also theres a farming technique abound smoking an orchard that encourages them to bear more flowers and fruit, increasing harvest. Fer reals.

But oh what does the eye spy? Blue-green peepers lit up as the dagger made its way towards him. "Soooo cool!" he breathed as he studied the craftsmanship. Color him impressed. "These were stealth weapons for Muggles, kinda like our wands but with a very limited purpose." As he felt the dagger in his hand he thought of the Professor's other question-- how can they acquire one if they didnt have one in hand? "Well Professor, back in the day, people would go to Bladesmiths to have something like these created for them. Goblins are the best metalworkers in the Wizarding World so they can make something like this for the right price."

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

When the professor unwrapped a DAGGER from a cloth right there and then, Matt GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSPPPPPEEED dramatically because that was SO AWESOME.

He was out of breath. That was TOO COOL.

He wanted one.

Once it got to him, the Gryffindor removed the sheath and held the dagger up in front of his face. He could see his reflection and MERLIN, IT WAS SO AWESOME he couldn't get enough of it. He didn't want to pass it along so he took his tiiiimmmeeeeee to look at it from all possible angles.

What one might use it for?? "To STAB people, of course." Duuuuhhhh. "Mainly." There were other uses for it as well, Matt knew, but that was the MAIN use for a dagger, obviously. "You know, self-defense." Or not, but they got the drill. "You can conjure one up!?" COULD they? Aaaaaaaahhhhhh, that would be amazing if they could and maybe not a very good idea because Matt would probably do it all the time.

Not to stab people, but you know. Just to OWN some pretty awesome daggers.

As terrifying as it was, the blade was actually rather beautiful. It almost looked like it belonged in some sort of museum. Felicity did pass it on rather quickly, though, and didn't bother to unsheathe it - she was far too clumsy to be handling something sharp, and if it was magical it could probably sense fear or something.

She did, this time, raise a tentative hand. "Some cultures used daggers in a ritualistic sense, as a sort of symbol." Hence why they'd become more decorated over time. "As for acquiring one, I agree with the idea that transfiguring something into one would be the best course of action."

Smoke…

So it wasn’t one thing but the other that might give a clue as to what they would be doing for the lesson. Cassie had ideas on what it could be used for, however as they each came to mind, her classmates seemed to be just a little quicker and the Ravenclaw hadn’t been one to repeat answers somewhat unnecessarily. She did write down one or two that she hadn’t thought of as well as the professor’s responses to each of the suggested thoughts on smoke usages. Then soon enough they were brought to the next item on the menu.

A dagger…

Yeah, Cass knew what it was. More of a weapon than just a knife but a similar shape. She absently watched it being passed around, thinking and listening more to the answers of the questions poised to the class. There was for defense which was the fifth year’s main thought. For cooking purposes. And then getting oneself out of trouble which the Ravenclaw supposed was another angle for the defense idea. Finally, the use as a ritualistic instrument. All good ones to give. “It could be used to make stuff,” Cassie offered herself after raising her hand. “Like a carving tool or such, especially if you had it for another of the other purposes and not a carving tool itself.”

As for acquiring one, the obvious answer was to transfigure it. Perhaps out of a stick or something.

Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.

Noelle took notes from the board as things were written down.

Once that was done, she looked up and saw Professor Stewart pull out a dagger. So she'd been right. Or... maybe she'd been right. She'd been looking ahead in the Transfiguration book. But what were they talking about right now?

Oh right. The uses of daggers. "Protection probably." Of course, Noelle would never want to use a dagger against someone... unless she ABSOLUTELY had to.

Sky took note of all the other reasons her peers listed as reasons for smoke, but then as the lesson continued, she grew more confused. Smoke and fire she could understand, but what did that have to do with daggers?

It was a gorgeous item, to which Sky was easily able to see and feel from having held it, before passing it on to the next student. A real, sharp blade. The Professor was nuts, passing that around with teenagers here, but guess it was part of the trusting your students thing. And surely no one would do any horseplay with an object during a lesson.

It's weight was surprisingly heavy, yet not. Like she could tell it was solid metal, yet it also had a light feel. Transfiguring an object made sense, given the class that they were in, so no points to add there, however, surely there was some unique out-of-the-box use for a dagger that her classmates weren't thinking of. Besides, why else would the Professor have introduced an object in a class that began with fire-pits and smoke? So surely there must have been some connection between the two...

Um, why was Rooney using a DAGGER to slice sandwiches in half? That seemed a little excessive? Also, was the head boy hungry or something, which was why he was talking about food?

Nevermind though, because still had yet to offer a use for the object. Raising her hand, she hesitated a moment, "Well, I'm not exactly sure, other than what's been mentioned before me, but none of those things really have much to do with smoke... except perhaps the dagger has magical properties within it that would allow a person to cut through the smoke, if you will. Smoke can make it fairly difficult to breath, especially if it's thick in the air, so maybe the dagger has like absorbent properties?" Kind of like that Godric Gryffindor sword heirloom she'd read about in Hogwarts, A History, and while she was maybe way out on a limb here, it was maybe worth a guess.

As usual, Shay was busy taking notes, as her classmates gave their answers and the professor commented on them. Then the professor brought out something rather surprising. It was a knife, a dagger to be exact. She must have been very brave to pass a dangerous weapon around with this lot. When the dagger made it to Shay, she unsheathed it and looked it over very carefully. It was really quite interesting. She tried to make a mental note of it's characteristics and distinguishing features.

Of course there was a question attached to the curious item. Fortunately or unfortunately, Shay was pretty much in agreement with those who had answered before her. Most likely a person would use a dagger to defend oneself. And being as though this was Transfiguration class, Shay figured that they could obtain one by transfiguring another object into a dagger. Since she had nothing new to add to the conversation, Shay remained quiet and kept writing.
