Default Potions Lesson #1

The normal greenish glow of the dungeons seem to glow a bit brighter today as if it was reflecting some of the sunlight from outside somehow. The classroom is a comfortable even for the September weather. The workstations are sat up in their normal way four people per table, not that it was relevant to the lesson today. Labs coats, were hanging right as you walk in, if you wanted one they were there. On workstation was a parchment, quill, and two vitals one has a clear liquid and the other has a white sandy dust substance in the other. They will find out what was in them soon enough.

Professor Canterbury had the doors wide open. Standing near the door slipped on her own lab coat and walked around the classroom. Checking to see it was all ready to go and that each spot had what was needed for the lesson. She moved back behind her desk and to took a seat as she waited for the students to come in. Come right on in and take a seat the lesson be being getting started

Lesson progression:
Greeting and Question
Responses and Experiment
Stuff here and Question
Answers and Invisibility Potion

OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Professor Canterbury’s rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Please remember this IC this is not the first lesson of the term. Class will continue in a little over 24 hours time (May 6 around 9am EST) Thanks for coming! Class has officially started so please keep the chatting to a minimum. If you haven't posted your charrie in here and want to, please feel free to jump right in and pretend as though they've been here the entire time.

Default mention of Kane and starting potion brewing too, about halfway done! o.o
YesJess! | Captain Goggles | Mama Badger | Eva's Soul Sister | An OG™ | It's all in the Numbers

When Kane agreed to swap parchments, Skylar took his curious as to what he wrote, and sprinkled some of the pearl dust on it, revealing the message. She smiled in amusement at his message and then again when he question her own secret message. "I could say the same about yours." Because while Kane was pretty cool, she thought Brent to be cooler, of her own bias reasons.

And then suddenly lots of talk was being thrown out there about how long the effects would last and ways to make it last longer and Skylar was scrambling to get it all copied down, because Merlin only knew what information would be needed for exams. And now time to get brewing. To which she read her protocol through once just for a rough idea of what to do, before she began, because she discovered that to be a valuable practice.

Collecting all the ingredients she would need, the fourth year first cleaned her cauldron using a simple scourgify spell, before filling it up halfway with water, casting aquamenti with ease that she should have mastered by now (and did). Bringing the water to a boil, she then added her five juniper berries. She glanced to see if Kane had gotten to the shrivelfig, which it seemed he hadn't, so she cut hers in half, holding the other half out for Kane. "Here's my other half of shrivelfig." because it said for them to share, which she guessed was to conserve costs of ingredients as much as possible. Squeezing the juice out of her half into a glass, she then dropped in the de-juiced shrivelfig and watched for it to change colors.

Miraculously, it DID appear to be a light purple, which meant, so far so good. Picking up her stirrer, she stirred ten times counter clockwise, then five times clockwise, watching with gratification as her potion turned a darker shade of purple.... So far so good. Six cherries, then she blinked at the next ingredient, even though she'd read it over. Glitter?! Was the glitter SAFE TO CONSUME? EW. EW. EW.

Sighing, she added two level scoops of the silver colored glitter, already deciding she didn't care to sample her potion. There were other ways she could hide without a potion that required her to ingest glitter, thank you very much.

And heat off, with a quick cast of finite.

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

Fire extinguished, Shay added her five dried fall leaves to the cauldron. She wondered why they had to specifically be fall leaves. Then again, spring and summer leaves wouldn't naturally be dry, would they? Shay unstoppered the vial of demiguise tincture and poured a little bit into a waiting bowl. Then she placed two moth wings in one hand and used the other hand to dip one in the tincture. Shay added the first wing to the potion and dipped wing number two before adding it to the potion as well. After checking her notes, Shay retrieved the pearl dust. She quickly poured it into the cauldron and stepped back.

The chemical reaction took place and Shay watched the burning from a safe distance. When you had as much hair as she did, you learned to give all things burning and fire related a wide berth. When the burning stopped, it was time to add another moth wing to the mix and Shay did as instructed. Picking up a clean stirrer, she stirred five times in a counterclockwise direction. "one, two, three, four, five and switch." Stirring in the other direction, she counted, "one, two, three, four, five." Exhaling with relief, Shay realized that her potion was indeed the silvery-white color that it should be.

Nearing the end of the brewing process, Shay found the remaining moth wing and added it to her potion. All she had to do now was cover it. She got her piece of cheesecloth and carefully placed it over her cauldron. Shay checked her watch and set the timer for five minutes. She didn't want to get distracted and lose track of the time. In the meantime, she began to clean her equipment. That would mean less clean up would be necessary later. With her wand in hand, she said, "Scourgify", moving from one item to the next. Shay took a moment took check on her neighbor. It looked like Ava was doing great. Anyway, the five minutes should be up soon.

Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.

SPOILER!!: Her next steps

5.) Add in the cherries
6.) Add the silver colored glitter
7.) Turn off the heat.
8.) Add the leaves.
9.)Dip two of the moth wings into the tincture of Demiguise and add them to the cauldron
10.) Drop the Pearl dust into the cauldron. When the tincture of Demiguise meets pearl dust, they make a reaction that burns.
NOTE: Let it burn out
11.) Add another moth wing
12.) Stir five times counterclockwise, then ten times clockwise.
NOTE: Potion should be silvery-white color.
13.) Add the remaining moth wing.
14.) Place the cheese cloth over your cauldron and leave it there for 5 minutes

Okay, So Noelle wasn't going to dwell on the colors. It was a purple, so hopefully it was purple enough to work. She added the cherries next and the silver glitter. Turning off the heat, she glanced down at her notes to see what was next. Okay. Noelle added the leaves next and took the moth wing carefully before dipping it into the demiguise juice and adding it to her cauldron. She did that again because the recipe called for two.

Next step, add the pearl dust. Noelle added the correct amount into the cauldron and was surprised when it started burning. OKay... luckily, her face wasn't around the cauldron enough to burn anything. She let it burn out while glancing up at Olly who looked to be about done with his.

Once it burned out, Noelle added the last moth wing and and put the cheese cloth over the cauldron. She looked at the time. She had 5 minutes. Hopefully she did everything correctly.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Oh goodie, they could have another one! Jessa was two seconds away from asking someone else to loan her some of theirs since they were only dipping the wings in them but the Professor's answer worked too.

Just before skipping off to that desk, she spun, leaned over and took a look at Derf's potion. "Yeah, looks right to me." Light purple, mhm. "I'll be back, getting us a new tincture." And with that the Ravenclaw meandered around the varying desks and workstations within the room and made her way to the Professor's desk. She grabbed a new vial then hurried back.

Now where was she? Oh right, the wings. Jessa took two, carefully dipping them into the tincture before dropping them into the cauldron. "We said we were using two scoops of the pearl dust...yeah?" She remembered them saying two. Here's to hoping it didn't suddenly void the entire potion. She'd be properly frustrated at that one.

One scoop, then another. Jessa leaned slightly in the direction opposite her cauldron, watching the burning reaction as the two ingredients met. Knowing there was nothing to be done about it, the young girl simply waited for it to be done. "Huh. It doesn't say whether the remaining wings should be dipped. Guess not." Again she peered over into Derf's colour, knowing the difficulty he had discerning for himself. "Still on the right track, yup."

She considered his statement as she watched the burning in her own cauldron, turning it over and over in her head. "I guess that would make sense...yeah....maybe that's it but then how do we explain the leaves?" Definitely a lot of questions. Most that didn't seem to have an answer coming any time soon. With the last of the burning done, Jessa dropped another moth wing into the cauldron then proceeded to stir, first five counter clockwise one...two...three...four...five then ten in a clockwise motion. One...two....three....seven....eight...nine...ten. There!

Once she was certain the potion now resembled a silvery white colour, Jessa dropped the final moth wing then reached for the cheese cloth and draped it over her cauldron. She turned to face her friend then, ready if he needed any help while she waited out the five minutes with her own.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

After the experiment had finished and it was time to brew the potion themselves, Mason zoned everyone out and began to focus on his work. He looked at the board and first counted the ingredients to see if he had them all. Check. Check. Check. Wait, did he have 4 moth wings? The Ravenclaw searched his working station until he eventually found the jar. Alright he got everything.

He set up his cauldron on the heater and with an effortless non-verbal spell he began to clean his cauldron at first with scourgify before using the aguamenti charm to fill the cauldron half way with water. When it reached the point he broke the spell and pointed his wand at the underside of the cauldron setting the heater aflame. Before he started adding the berries, the Ravenclaw reached over to grab his protective gloves just the be sure and safe and added five Juniper berries in to his cauldron. Nothing much happened yet but it was only the first step.

He then grabbed a cutting board and a knife and cut the shrivelfig in half. He wondered why he had to share if with his neighbor as his neighbor probably had a shrivelfig for himself so he or she would get two but who was he to question the Professor's instructions? So he slid the other half to the side and whoever was next to him could pick it up. He was too focused on his work to see who it was anyways. Next, Mason checked the board again and read that at this point the potion should be light purple. And seeing as he had done everything right so far, it was indeed light purple. Grabbing the stirrer next, Mason cleaned it as well with a non-verbal spell and double checked how many times he had to turn. Ten times counter clock wise...he counted his stirs carefully, not wanting to mess up the potion and then..he quickly read the board... five times clockwise. 1..2..3.4.5 the light purprle darkened with each stir until it changed to dark purple completely.

It was pretty, deep dark purple was his favourite color and he secretly hoped the potion would stay that way. But he also knew that if it stayed a deep dark purple color he had messed up. Next up were the cherries, the seventh year took the lid off the jar and picked out cherries one by one until he had added six of them in to the cauldron. Grabbing a spoon, he cleaned it again because one could not be too careful in potions and added a scoop of silver glitter. He had almost went on to the next step when he realised he had almost...almost... made a mistake and he quickly added another scoop of silver colored glitter to the potion.

Glitter was awful though. It got stuck on you even when you hadn't even touched it and Mason wouldn't be surprised if he had to spend his next few days trying to get rid of the few sparks of glitter on his hands. Anyways, he turned the heat off and quickly added the fall leaves which were....he looked at the board again, thankful that he had his workstation in the first row because he could still see the board, he wondered if the people in the back had trouble with all the smoke rising from the cauldrons. Not his problem though, they should have picked a better seat then. He added five dried fall leaves to the potion. The next step was something different. Instead of adding the ingredients to the cauldron they had to lets say fuse them to make one ingredient. Pulling up his protective gloves, Mason opened the jar in which the moth wings were in and grabbed out two of them. He placed the in front of him and closed the jar again. Shoving it aside, he picked up the first moth wing and dipped it into the tincture of demiguise and added it to the cauldron. He did the same with the moth wing before adding the peark dust as well. He watched , fascinated as the tincture of the demiguise and the pearl dust mixed and the reaction began to burn.

The Ravenclaw waited when it burned out and added another moth wing. Apparently this one didn't need to be dipped in the liquid. Grabbing the stirrer, he stirred the potion five times counter clock wise and then ten times clockwise. He checked his potion and although he had done all the steps the right way, the color was not as silvery-white as he had expected it to be. Or maybe it was just him. He added the last remaining moth wing and that did make a small difference to the color.

Cheese cloth though, that made him snicker a little because it was a funny name for a cloth wasn't it? Was it actually made out of cheese? He thought that it would be a really stupid question, one that he could find out himself with a little research so he stayed quiet. He draped the cloth over the cauldron and sat down, satisfied.

Rooney was confused as to how his notes would contribute anything to the exams, given that they weren't officiated by school staff, but he didn't press on asking questions or answering back and just put his head down to follow the instructions for this potion. But only after titling it "Creator Invisible" and noting five stars at the top of the page, indicating the level of research he would need to do after this class. As much as he enjoyed potions, it wasn't his speciality. He wasn't Katy. Potions to Katy was History of Magic to Rooney, so he understood how all of this was probably coming easy to her. Actually, he took a moment then to look for her in the classroom and found himself smiling at her instructing Oliver Lupin to watch her. Hah. Hahahaha.

Taking full precaution, Rooney slipped on some gloves when he was cutting the shrivelfig and offered the spare half to a nearby student. After that, he squeezed out the juice as per instructions and added the shrivelfig to his cauldron alongside the berries that he had already put in. The Ravenclaw consulted his instructions for the colour his potion should be by now, before taking a charmed pencil from his pocket. The pencil worked in such wonders that it could match any colour it was placed nearby. Roo held it above his cauldron until it turned a similar shade of light purple as his potion, and then coloured a square in beside the instruction. Now he had a colour reference if he was to ever make this potion again, although he probably wouldn't be. There were lots of recipes that didn't require glitter.

And Rooney loved glitter, honestly. But in a potion?

It was often hard to stir a potion a certain number of times when everyone else in the room was mumbling the numbers at different speeds and different times. Roo tried his best to focus, even pausing for ten seconds with his eyes closed and taking routine breaths. He stirred anti-clockwise ten times, and five clockwise as instructed before having to check again for a different coloured potion. How fifteen stirs could change a colour was beyond him, but sure enough...the purple was now darker and he had to use his magic pencil again. Oooooh fun.

Next in went the cherries and the silver glitter (still wondering what the purpose of the latter was, though) and Roo consulted his written down instructions and then the board that he had copied it from. They were to turn the heat off now? But what was going to happen with the glitter? It was just in there and doing nothing..? But....wouldn't that scratch the heck of a throat when someone drank it? Rooney turned it off anyway and just watched for a second to see if anything happened to that glitter.....? No........? Nothing.........? Disappointing.

Either way, he moved on to those wings, careful that this was a more advanced step or 'complicated' as he had overheard Katy call it. He supposed that it was, but he got it done and added the first two moth wings coated in tincture into the cauldron before tossing in the pearl dust. Aha! There was the change he had been waiting for. The burrrrrrrrrrrrning. This was more interesting and he even paid attention to it, because he had time to. He had to wait for it to burn out. He gave the air a sniff to see if it smelt of anything he could identify, but all he could come up with was the scent of sick that was still stuck in his nose from earlier. Gross. He wished that there was a spell he could cast up his nose to just eradicate the things stuck to his nose hairs. Maybe there was... maybe he just wasn't familiar with it.

Once the reaction between the tincture and the dust had burnt out, Rooney added in another moth wing making it three in his potion so far and proceeded to stir the whole concoction together once more. This time, five in an anti-clockwise direction and ten clockwise. The opposite numbers and directions to the first lot of stirring earlier. His pencil was used again, this time to mark the silvery-white colour that his potion had turned. He was on track, huzzah! Once the colour was confirmed on his handwritten recipe, he added in the fourth and final moth wing of the potion and placed the cheese cloth over his cauldron.

The five minutes that he needed to leave it for, Rooney spent cleaning up the rest of the things he had used this class, just so it was easier for him afterwards.

Soon enough the water was boiling so Cassie felt free to move on. In went the juniper berries as directed. One…two…three…four…five. Then with another “Scourgify,” she cleaned her knife and cut into the shrivelfig in half. Since her neighbor was already past that stage and obviously didn’t need their shrivelfig, the unused half went into her supplies while the other was properly squeezed into her potion before dropped into the brewing liquid.

Oh look...purple.

So far so good it seemed. After cleaning her stirring rod, the Ravenclaw proceeded to get about the next steps. Ten times counter-clockwise followed by five times clockwise. One…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…ten one way. One…two…three…four…five another. As the swirls of potion moved with the movement of the rod, the purple deepened until it was much darker. Even better it seemed. Cass then added the six cherries one by one followed by the scoops of glitter before turning off the heat.

Glitter in a potion…who’d have thought?

Heat was off, which was probably a good thing, because all this fire in the potions classroom always terrified Skylar, even though she'd brewing a couple years now. She added the dried leaves next, definitely not interested in trying this potion. First glitter, now leaves? She shook her head in amusement, as she dropped one .... two... three ... four ... five leaves in.

Okay, the next step was slightly weird. Dip moth wings in demiguise tincture and then add them to the cauldron. Now, was it supposed to be a full out coating, or just a half dip? Figuring more was probably better, Skylar slipped on some protective gloves, as stuck the whole leaf in the tincture vial and pulled it out to add it. And then did the same with a second one. And reaction time! Well once she added the pearl dust; how much was she supposed to add, again? The whole vial? Just a little? Skylar frowned, as she sprinkled a few shakes of the dust into her cauldron and the potion sizzled for about a minute.

And another moth wing coated in the tincture was added. She stirred five times counter clockwise, then ten times clockwise. Her potion was kind of an off-white and she wondered if she hadn't added enough of the pearl dust. But then again, silvery-white seemed so vague and broad, so perhaps it was alright.

Oh, and no more coating moth wings in tincture. Oh wait, that meant the third one wasn't supposed to be coated either? Shrugging, because it seemed like it didn't hurt anything, she added the final moth wing and then placed the cheese cloth over her cauldron. Five minutes, which was enough time to clean up her scrap ingredients and grab an empty vial to fill for later for the professor to check her potion's viability.

As things seemed to be more under control, Henry thought he could focus a little better. As long as he kept his mind on his potion and not on.... oh, was that a little finger wiggle he spied? He returned that with a smirky grin and a little finger wiggle of his own.

Oh, right.. where was he again? Back to focusing on the potion, and it seemed that his water was starting to boil over so he quickly turned down the flame on his burner before turning to his notes again.

He tossed in the juniper berries, then.. oh. Well, that was nice of his Ravenclaw neighbor to save half of his shrivelfig for him. Henry voiced his thanks, reminded himself that the middle of his potion was not the best time to make new friends, and he squeezed the juice of it into his cauldron before dropping it in.

Glancing at the instructions again, he peered into his cauldron. It was purple at least. Maybe it passed for a light purple. He dipped his stirring spoon into the mixture next for ten counter clockwise, then five clockwise turns. It was still that kind of medium purple color, but it was darker than it was, right? He squinted at it a moment. Yeah, definitely darker.

Henry tossed in the cherries and glitter next, then turned off the heat. He was still kind of curious about how the essence of demiguise was acquired - had that been addressed? If it had, he missed it in the earlier chaos - but tried not to think about it too much so as not to get too distracted. Two of the moth wings got dipped into the tincture, then went into the potion. The pearl dust was next - BAM! - and Henry paused to watch his potion burn a few moments. That was kinda cool.

Oh, buddy..... Her workstation looked like a fairy had peed on it. A glitter fairy...with glitter encrusted wings. Olivia decided she'd feel terrible about this later, during clean up... but for now... IT WAS ONWARD WITH THE POTIONS BREWING. They were running out of time, and she wasn't so hot under pressure. Well, unless they were in the duelling arena. 'Cause.... heh, this Gryffindor gal was a force to be reckoned with in that circumstance.

Now, for these "fall leaves"... What, exactly, constituted a "fall leaf"? Like..from a dogwood tree? Birch? Beech...? ....There were plenty of beech trees outside around the lake. If she wanted to recreate this potion, would it be acceptable to collect those leaves for use? Considering they weren't especially magical... Or did them growing on the Hogwarts grounds, in turn, make them magical? "Professor, does it matter what type of fall leaves are used?" It was asked offhandedly as she added her five into the cauldron. Also, it hadn't occurred to her that she might have been making a nuisance of herself. It was just... Olivia did like some level of detail..... She'd gotten that from Rooney, actually. So, Professor Canterbury could thank him, if she were being annoying. When you dated a Ravenclaw, amright?

Speaking of Rooney... he looked to be finished. Gah, that was efficiency.

Anyway... these moth wings. More questions were presenting themselves, but Olivia was doing the Professor a favor and keeping her mouth closed (for now). After the lesson, the blonde would visit the older lady's office and they could squabble over the details with a nice, hot cup of tea. Liv would bring a notebook and pick her teacher's brain about all the things. It was her OWL year, after all. She wanted an 'O' on the Potions OWL...

No... No, let's not spiral further with adding examinations to the mix, self. Please, let's not.

Pausing to take a steadying breath, Olivia eventually grasped both moths by their delicate wings; dipping them fully into the phial holding the clear liquid. The demiguise tincture... She was still very curious as to what had been used to make it, and would be inquiring about its formula after the lesson, if Professor Canterbury didn't mind too much. Unless it was a shifty secret.

Dropping the two in, she quickly followed that up with the pearl dust. How many ounces was this again? Did the exact amount matter? It would still set off the reaction either way, correct? So, perhaps the strength of the potion would be dependent on however much was used...? Jotting 'one medium-sized phial' next to the ingredients listing, Liv dumped that into her mixture, as well...stepping back. She doubted it'd be too dangerous if she chose to stay close, but her luck had been pretty terrible lately, and it was just best not to die before she got the chance to accomplish all the things she wanted to in this life. Constant vigilance and all that. Thank you, Professor Hirsch. After about five minutes, the burning seemed to be dying down, and she carefully made her approach...noting the color and lack of distinguishable smell. It was shifting from that beautiful eggplant color to a whitish-silver one. It was getting there...but wasn't quite to the point it needed to be... Huh, After adding a third moth, she recleaned her stirring rod before dipping it back down into the cauldron. Yes, that was probably overkill, but she'd rather keep all her utensils clean, considering the amount of stray glitter still littering her workstation. Good thing she had it to herself.

Okay... stir FIVE times COUNTERclockwise, and then TEN times in the opposing direction. It was offsetting the stirring from before. Nice. The symmetry made her brain purr, for whatever reason. Working her favorite crystal stirring rod, Liv squished up her eyebrows up in concentration. JUST SO SHE DIDN'T ACCIDENTALLY do the wrong thing. SUPER. CONCENTRATION... somewhat.

Well...the color looked right. that was definitely a silvery-white... to her eyes. She thought to ask for a second opinion, but ended up having to force her hand down on the work counter; a new wave of cramps making themselves known. Please, P L E A S E...just let her finish this up and then she could go cry in peace and quiet in the girls bathroom...about being a girl.

With a shaky hand, she added the last moth and then layered the cheese cloth out over her cauldron. Deep. Heavy. Breathing. Geezus, it was hot in the potions lab. Sweat was clinging to her neck uncomfortably...but Olivia tried her best to keep an almost smile on her face....but she only felt super nauseous. The blonde was definitely a touch green in the face.

SUMMER FOREVER

Five minutes was up.. and Etta was done. She lifted the corner of the cheesecloth and looked into the cauldron to make sure the potion was exactly how it was supposed to be and thankfully, it was. She wrinkled her nose at the smell though. Eh.

But now what? Could they leave? Did they have to wait? No one else seemed to be leaving, though. She looked around, watching people in the process of potion-making and sighed. It seemed like she had to wait. The girl pulled out a parchment and started to randomly sketch, waiting for further instructions.

In spite of Oliver's reassurance that he was fine, she paused after adding her moth wings. He really was fine, though. It made her dumb and soft to slow down her potion for someone else, even if that someone else was one of her best friends. A lesser human would splash the rest of the ingredients into the cauldron in a tantrum fit, but potions was serious business.

Plus this was the good part. Katy sprinkled her pearl dust across the surface of the cauldron, keeping well back so she didn't catch on fire from the quick flash of flame. Her lab coat sleeves fit snugly enough that she was never in any real danger of catching fire, but it didn't hurt to be aware of open flame, no matter how cool it was. And it was very very cool.

The flame burned out quickly, and Katy added the other moth wing. Again with the counting. She re-cleaned the stirring stick and slid it carefully into the potion to avoid any splashback. Now, pay attention, Toussaint. It wasn't a good time to go snooping to see what everyone was up to. There was counting to be done. Five counterclockwise, followed by ten clockwise stirs.

She leaned in close to gauge the shade of the potion. White. Silver, she supposed, but mostly just milky. Was that right? Katy tossed the last moth wing into the cauldron and immediately draped a clean cheese cloth over the top of the cauldron.

The water in his cauldron had bubbles everywhere so the boy took as a sign to add the berries andthen squeeze the juice out of the shrivelfig. He did not use protective gloves, so while the potion began to turn purple, Levi used his wand to scourge the hand he'd used with to extract the juice.

Kettleburn seemed to be doing well enough, he supposed, though she was missing the usual glint she always sported for more practical lessons like Defense the Dark Arts. He frowned, looking back at his cauldron and noting the purple tint coloring his concoction. He cleansed his stir stick, and began the clockwise countdown from ten to one, watching the brew slowly begin to darken.

"What's dark enough to be considered the exact shade dark purple, Kettleburn?" Four, three, two, one. In a whisper, he continued: "Visual aids would be nice, right? It's just kind of subjective, I think." In his opinion, the steps to correctly brew a potion could not be subjective or left open for interpretation. There needed to be clarity and precision and, oh, bother--Levi tsked at himself and hastily began the counter-clockwise countdown from five to one.

At least it looked dark enough. "D'you think we'll be able to keep a sample? Seems fair to me, honestly." Reward for a job (presumably)
well done.
Putting the shrivelfig in was easy enough, Char used impervius on her hands to protect against stains then squeezed the juice in. wait though.....Did drop the shrivelfig mean drop it in or just..... drop it like you just got caught red (or purple) handed doing something bad? Ummmmm..... Char cast her eyes around then decided drop it in was what people were doing so it went in with a plop. Light purple? Was it light purple? Looked light purple.... Okay yes. Stirring next. Oh boy stirring was tedious though, having to count stirs and ughhhh. Ten anti clockwise..... Char moved her stirrer quickly through the motions (more like 9 and a half).... Five clockwise (more like 5 and a quarter).....

She looked up at Levi, doubt creeping in. "There are SO many shades of purple. Also this would be so hard for colorblind people." And yes, visual aids would so help. Hers looked dark purple though.... Maybe not deep dark? But dark.

She wasn't so sure about keeping her own potion but she would happily try Levi's. "It won't be full invisibility though right? More like disillusionment?" She dropped the cherries in next, followed by the glitter. Was that just to be pretty??? Char lost her place in the instructions for a second so was delayed in turning off the heat, but she hurried to get it off then tossed the leaves in.

Basically half way thankfully. Nghyuuuh. Char really wished she was better at potions.

With the heat off, the dried leaves went into her cauldron. Perfect time of year to be brewing this potion as dried fall leaves were getting pretty common. Otherwise you had to make sure to have a stash for other seasons. Next, Cassie took hold of two out of the four moth wings and dipped them carefully into the tincture of demiguise as directed. Then they too went into the cauldron and the brewing potion within. Now she had to add the pearl dust like she had done before and this was also done quite carefully, making sure not to be too close when the reaction happened and the sparks went up.

Up it went…

…and Cass waited for it to go out before moving on. In went another moth wing before she gave the potion some more stirring. One…two…three…four…five times counter-clockwise. Then one…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…ten times clockwise. A quick check of the color of the potion revealed a white color, something the fifth year supposed could be considered silvery white. Cassie certainly hoped it was alright. Regardless, in went the final moth wing and finally the cheesecloth was placed over the top.

Now to wait for those 5 minutes.

Oliver dropped the Pearl Dust into the cauldron, he knew he had to be slowing Katy down and of course felt bad about that.. But he was grateful nonetheless. He let the chemical reaction happen and waited until it burned out. He took his time with the second moth wing, trying to focus on his own stuff. He shouldn't be holding anyone back.

Counting again as he stirred counter clockwise. "Five, four, three, two, one." And now he needed it clockwise, counting it out loud again. Did it seem Silver? He moved his wand above the cauldron. "Lumos." A little extra light would help him see that it was.. It was probably silly but he wanted to be sure.. and he wasn't confident in this class. "Nox." And with that his wand was away.

The last Moth Wing was added to the potion and the Cheese Cloth was pulled across the top. "All done." He said more or less to himself.. But also to Katy if she was paying attention.

"You're welcome, Abey." Daisy smiled down at the boy but didn't stop walking down the classroom, towards the desk he had pointed out. She wanted to dismiss it and say that it wasn't needed -- because let's be clear, it really really wasn't -- but something told her it was probably better to accept it. It might mean something to Abey and, in the end, that was the really important thing here. "Thank you
for keeping me awake."
For part of the lesson, anyway; she would still have to face the re-- Oh.

Curiously, Daisy approached one of the desks they were passing by and peeked into someone's cauldron. Look at that, it looked like they were almost done. She didn't know why the surprise after all Canterbury had said they had twenty minutes left not that long ago. She turned back to Abey and shrugged, not even bothering to act like she was sorry about this sad turn of events. Oops. It wasn't like she had missed that hopeful tone in his voice. Using their linked hands, she tugged him along once more. "I guess it is. So terribly sad, isn't it?" Only not really, not at all actually.

She chanced another look at the front of the room. Yes, she would definitely need to duplicate someone's notes. But at last, they were at Abey's desk and the Slytherin turned to look at him once more. "Here you are, Sir. Safely delivered." Well, at least she hoped so, anyway.

One minute.....

Two minutes.....

Three minutes.....

So, funny story.... the glitter was causing more of a headache than it had any right to. Like most of her classmates, she'd attempted to clean up while waiting for this cheesecloth to do whatever it was meant to do. Professor Newton had also loved him some cheesecloth. Olivia understood it was meant to be a thickening agent, in some cases, but also used to drain out chunks and lumpy materials... Like the dry leaves, the moths, the cherries, the juniper berries... Actually, come to think of it...there were a lot of ingredients that would leave small pieces behind. Huh.

Lumpy... Ugh. She was going to be sick.

Four minutes.....

Five minutes.....

....Was she meant to remove it now?

Just as she was finishing up her potion, she heard Canterbury tell them how much time they had left. Awesome, see what working diligently and not goofing off did? Reaching for a vial, she scooped up into it, and stoppered it before holding it up to the light, and looking at it questioningly. She wasn't sure if she had managed to do it quite right, but it wasn't a complete failure either, she was confident of that. Scribbling her name and house on it, she sat the bottle down on the table, and then proceded to store the rest of the potion into various containers. Storing those in her bag, she took the one to be tested up to the Professor's desk. “Professor, do you think I'd be able to test this out, like, do you think it will work?” she asked as she sat it down. “And you said earlier that it will only work for two hours? What happens if you take more of it? And uh, how long will a potion like this keep? Is it something you'd have to say, special order from a potions shop, or something they would just have stocked on the shelves?” These were important questions after all.

Clockwise countdown was DONE and the concoction was a shade of dark purple that was possibly right. Levi checked the instructions again and made another executive decision by adding the cherries one by one. Then came the 2 scoops of glitter, which was a curious ingredient, intriguing enough for the boy to make a mental note to look up its properties, later.

He shot Declan a look over his shoulder, looked at Charlotte, then turned back to his potion with a frown. "I know." He turned off the heat. "My brother must be struggling right about now because of that."

Levi felt bad enough to feel the back of his neck redden but not enough to leave Kettleburn alone and ask Declan if he needed help.

Well.

One by one, he added the fall leaves and used tweezers to handle the moth leaves. Worrying at his bottom lip, Levi dipped them into the tincture of demisguise, and then carefully added them to the cauldron.

"I'd say so. But then Marchand said last term disillusionment charms could actually make you invisible. A powerful one, anyway. So, who knows, really." So many questions. At least there was a library. And in went the pearl drust, and the boy grinned as the burning began, which made him briefly wonder what that said about him. "By that logic, then," the boy continued, adding the other moth wing and beginning the counter-clockwise stirring again, "I s'ppose that we can assume that by adding octopus powder or maybe even dragon's blood--" Oh. "--perhaps we could brew a potion that could actually grant full invisibility." And maybe even for longer than two hours.

Another question from Miss Phillips. ”Any collection of crisp fall leaves.” She had collected the ones used in this lesson around on the grounds just the day before. So really you could pick up five different leaves and use them,

Ciara kept an eye on the classroom. She could in fact see who was doing there work and who wasn’t. She was watching and taking note. For whatever reason for not doing the assignment, being upset or not was no excuse. Though Miss Carden and Mister Botros had finally found their seats almost at the end of the lesson. It would show on the grade for the lesson, it was their choice. Ciara did find it kind that the older Slytherin did take care of the younger boy. It was truly to sad that they did not get to do the assignment.

Miss Swynford was already done and asked if she could test it out. Smiling at her as she took the vial. Examining it. "It looks good to me. If you want to you can test it out." Handing the vial back to her. As for the answers to the questions. "It's effects last an hour but you can take it but to three doses day. You would have to see what was in stock at the potions shop." It really depend on what they had in stock, what shop so on and so on.

Seeing that some of the students were coming to the end. She checked the time for the last time. Well the time had flown. "You guys have done superb today. Unfortunately we are out of time for this lesson. Finish wrapping up your potions, label them and bring them up to my desk. Thank you for attending today and have a good rest of the day."

OOC: You can post your charrie finishing up and/or leaving if you want. Thank you all for attending and being part of my first lesson. You all rock! I'm going to leave the lesson open until around 7 am EST I'll lock it then when I wake up.

Almost done, right? At least it seemed that way when Henry glanced down at his notes again once the burning had dissipated.

Another moth wing. More stirring. He started to work the spoon clockwise before catching himself and turning it back the other direction for five counterclockwise stirs. Then came ten clockwise stirs and.. a silvery-white color? Henry peered into his cauldron and frowned a bit. It looked more gray than silver, but maybe it was still okay.

Oh. Oh no. He went to add the last moth wing and realized he was nearly at the end and there were still ingredients left. Autumn leaves. Where had he missed adding them? Feeling slightly panicked, Henry skimmed over the directions, then skimmed over them again. Oh, right after turning off the heat. He wasn't sure how he missed that.

He felt slightly defeated now, but there wasn't a whole lot he could do about it. There wasn't time to remake it. He tossed them in with the last moth wing and hoped for the best. Then draping the cheesecloth over the top was the last step, and Henry glanced up at the clock. Thankfully class was almost over.

It was honestly hard enough to guesstimate and interpret potions colours as it was, so Char couldn't imagine trying to do it if you were colorblind. She shot a sympathetic look in Declan's direction but now was the fiddly part, so she focused on her workstation again.

.....Because dipping wings in a tincture sounded hard. She watched Levi do it and then grabbed her own tweezers to get started. She dropped the first wing in the tincture then had to spend a minute fishing it out.... hopefully that wouldn't be a problem! It went in the cauldron and she did the second wing too, maybe not dipping it as completely as she should just to avoid dropping it in the tincture. The Pearl dust went in and Char leaned back to watch the reaction burn out. Another wing? Did it need dipping? Char decided not, and dropped it in before picking her stirrer up and did fiveish anticlockwise, and pretty much ten clockwise stirs.... And....... It was more silver than white.

What was Levi saying about Dragon blood? Char just kind of nodded but added, sounding cheerfully frazzled:

"I don't even really want to be invisible."

The last moth wing went in, then she threw the cheesecloth over and slumped back in her seat. Phew. Pheeeeew.

Done.

......Well, aside from waiting and sticking some in a vial anyways.

Brent was still trying to get his potion brewed correctly, when he heard the professor tell them it was time to go. Holy MERLIN. He needed to get this thing brew and bottled and turned in and whatever else he needed to do to it.

Things were at a boil now, so he peered at the instructions and noted it was time to add in the juniper berries. Five of them, right? After double-checking that, Brent carefully counted off five juniper berries and added them into the cauldron. Brent had already cleaned his tools, so when it came time to cut the shrivelfig in half, he was ready to go. He squeezed out the juice then added in the shrivelfig.

He watched his potion as it turned a light purple. GOOD. GOOOOOOOD. If he was going to be all slow and late with this brewing stuff, he was at least glad to see it was coming along okay. So...now what? He stirred ten times counter clockwise then changed directions and moved five times clockwise. His potion was now a deep, dark purple. Very cool.

.....Because dipping wings in a tincture sounded hard.

Done with the stirring portion, Levi examined the concoction, critically. Silvery white could, again, mean several things. But he supposed that the current tint his potion was sporting was more or less alright, so he was just going to go with it. By which, of course, he meant adding the remaining moth wing.

"Why not?" Genuine question. "Sneaking out after curfew would become exponentially easier, I suppose--not that it's too difficult now, mind you." probably not things to be sharing, but at least he made a point of keeping his voice loud enough for only Kettleburn to hear.

He placed the cheesecloth on top of the cauldron, fetched his pocket watch and set the timer. "Anyway, I'm going to look into this and keep you posted." Levi looked down at the pocket watch, willing time to move faster. "On the true invisibility thing." He grinned. "Consider it a down-payment of sorts for the dueling stuff."

Brent was about halfway finished now, which was good seeing as he didn't have much time left. Thank Merlin the professor had had some sympathy and allowed them to finish up before leaving. Brent quickly collected all six cherries and added them into the potion. Err...well, the brew.

Glitter seemed to be an odd ingredient for a potion, but there it was. Shrugging to himself, Brent scooped up two good scoops of the silver glitter then added it in, as well. Was it still supposed to be dark purple? ... His was dark purple. With a quick glance at the directions, Brent turned off heat then added the five leaves. He picked up two of the four moth wings, dipped them into the tincture of Demiguise, then dropped them into the potion.

He felt on top of his potions game right now!

He dropped the pearl dust into the cauldron then watched the burning reaction until it had burned out. Afterwards, he dropped a third moth wing into the cauldron. He decided to do a quick cleaning of his stirrer before stirring again. He had no idea if he would be mixing something that wasn't supposed to be mixed in, so better to be safe than sorry. He stirred five times counter clock wise, then ten times clockwise.

Oh. His potion wasn't dark purple anymore. He nervously glanced at the directions and was relieved to see that the color was supposed to be the color it was now. COOOOOL. He breathed a sigh of relief then dropped in the fourth and final moth wing. With that done, the only thing he still needed to do was cover the cauldron with a cheese cloth for five minutes, so he did just that.

Brent bottled up his potion, labeled it, then went and turned it in. He then returned to his station and cleaned up. "Thanks for a cool lesson, Professor," he said.
