Default Muggle Studies Lesson 1- The Evolution of Popular American Music

It was an average day in November, a reminder that the warm weather was slowly being replaced with winter. Nevertheless, the windows of the Muggle Studies classroom were opened (though students had the option to close them); natural light and fresh air streamed in. As you enter the room after Professor Kay greets you that morning, you notice something: the music playing softly from the laptop sitting atop the Professor’s desk. She had compiled a playlist ranging from various artists such as Taylor Swift, Soundgarden, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, the Backstreet Boys, Metallica- just to name a few.

All of these artists and bands have one thing in common. Can you figure it out? Have a seat as you try to do so or simply just enjoy the beats. Feel free to break out in dance or even a head bang. Class will begin shortly as it will be 10 AM soon!

The whiteboard stands before the class which has been set up in the usual setting- two sections of desks and chairs in neat rows and columns with a path in the middle so that Kay can easily access the back of the room if needed.

Links to the lesson's progression:
* Question 1: What do the musicians have in common?
* Question 2: What is/are your opinion/s about music?
* Responses, Information and Instructions
* Mel, Skylar and de-cloning Kay

OOC: Hihihi! Welcome to the first OOC lesson We’ll get started in 24 hours! Chatting is allowed but please keep it to a minimum. Pssst! Feel free to let your charries react crazily to the music if they wish (singing loudly, dancing, reacting dramatically to the lyrics etc ) Get creative! CLASS HAS BEGUN!

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta loved music.. she really did. It was the sole reason why she even learned to play the piano. Again, not something she was very good at it, but it definitely helped her relax and forget about her worries for those few minutes. But then, suddenly, the Head boy was suddenly yelling. Goodness.. he did get very excited. She raised an eyebrow, the corners of her lips lifting up in a smile before she decided to answer the questions.

"It IS an universal language, professor. Irrespective of which part of the world you're from, music is music. It helps you connect with other people, helps you make friends or relationships.. more than anything, it's a part of every person somehow in one way or another, in one language or another. And.. music is bad if the lyrics are bad, if they tend to influence people, especially the younger kids in a wrong way. In my opinion, artists should always try to make music that makes people happy, basically.. music that has positive lyrics.. "

Etta tried to explain the best she could but she definitely did enjoy the subject of today's lesson. Seemed like this was going to be a fun class.

Merlin, Rooney, you great idiot. Katy shot him a look, half amused and half annoyed. It wasn't difficult to be both at the same time. She was Katy Toussaint and was a bunch of things at the same time.

Music, though, was a particular joy of Katy. Toussaints all played instruments, and she'd been learning the piano and violin since she was three. It was harder to play here, but... she still enjoyed it. "Don't forget that not all music has lyrics, Professor, and some of the stuff that rips right through me is just the plucking of a chord." She could almost feel that pulse right in her chest, just from the memory of it. "Music builds community too. It's science!"

SPOILER!!: Americans!

Ding, ding, ding!

We have ourselves some winners!

Though it wasn’t like all the kiddos were winners in her opinion. But these few had hit the nail on the head; the responses were precisely what she was looking for. “Correct! These were all famous either American singers or bands. As we have visitors from Ilvermorny, I thought it was best to continue lessons about their country. It is my hope that should you understand their culture, you will all be able to bond with them.’’ This was her life’s mission, anyway, except that it came in the broader prospect of bridging the gap between wizards and muggles. “There will be more details on America’s music as we progress.’’

SPOILER!!: Popular, Mainstream!

“That is also correct,’’ Kay said with a few bobs of her head in Dora’s and Noelle’s directions. “Multiple of their songs became number one not only in America but also in various countries.’’ She didn’t go into details here either because that was going to happen when most of the class had given their answers.

SPOILER!!: Success!

This was the perfect time to launch into a bit of history about some of the artistes. “Exactly! They were all rather successful in their own way. For example, Taylor Swift was famous for her contemporary songs which narrated her life, more particularly her love life. Her debut album reached its highest spot of number five on the Billboard 200- which is a recording chart for albums in the United States. Her second album became the best selling one of the year 2009 and it earned her the award ‘Album of the Year’, an award which recognised her as the younger person to ever have won it.’’ She could go on about Swift’s success but she needed to move on.

“Next, we have Soundgarden, a rock band. This band is credited for aiding in the development of grunge music which a style of alternate rock. One of their biggest successes is their album ‘Superunknown’ debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. They too received numerous awards and they sold millions of albums around the globe. Their awards include ‘Best Hard Rock Performance’ and ‘Best Metal Performance’.’’

“There are so many artistes that I can go into great detail about but with the time constraint, I will be unable to do so. However, I have compiled information on a variety of singers from many genres and I have it uploaded onto the computers in The Fun Room. Please ensure that you take some time to go through the information as there will be a touch of this topic in your end of term exams. The file is labelled ‘American Music Through The Years’.

"In response to Mr Bronwyn's question, not all of them necessarily won the same awards. Their wins are sometimes categorised by the type of songs which the singer or group puts out.''
Olivia got a smile. "You're welcome, Ms Phillips. Your response is correct. It is safe to say that these artistes would have inspired many future singers with their songs and talent.''

SPOILER!!: Super old/ same timeframe!

Abey was going to be an icicle soon if she didn’t do something for him. Perhaps it was because he was so tiny the weather affected him so much. Whatever the reason was, Kay refused to let him freeze. As everyone knew from previous lessons, there was a fireplace in the classroom. It wasn’t electric but a regular one and she quickly built a fire though not as big as the ones she would make previously; she didn’t want to warm the class too much for those unaffected. Thank goodness for the house elves helping her to store firewood. “Mr Botros, you can sit closer to the fire. Anyone else who wishes to may also do so.’’ Satisfied that Abey would be happier, she returned to the front of the class.

“That's right. These artistes are ‘ancient’ as some of you may say. Some of them originate from the earlier 2000s while others originate from the later 1900s. But there is a particular reason why I chose older artistes as you will find out soon enough.’’

SPOILER!!: Silent kiddos! <3

There were a few silent kiddos and Kay did not miss them. She smiled encouragingly in their directions. Would they think of anything to contribute soon? If they didn’t this time around, then hopefully when she asked the next question because her next one would be an ‘open’ one. That is, there was no right or wrong answer.

Kay smiled but shook her head. “Actually, I have a variety of genres here. Some are rock, pop and soul, among others.’’ Etta made a good guess and the woman appreciated it.

“Quite true! Many artistes seemed to have found inspiration through love, romance and heartbreak. Other topics that are popular inspirations include friendship, childhood and parenthood.''

Kay nodded enthusiastically. “Another excellent point! The majority of them were members of a group. It’s interesting to note that sometimes the singers, when they go solo, become even more popular than the group they were once a part of.’’ It was funny how that worked out. “And yes, they all had at least one memorable song that is still popular even to today.’’

“Some of them wrote their own songs,’’ Kay replied. “At times, musicians would seek help, particularly from other musicians to aid them in doing so. This is known as a collaboration.’’

* * * * * * *

Individual responses complete, Kay turned her attention fully to the entire class. “Before we proceed directly into the subject of today’s lesson, which will deal with the evolution of America’s music, I would like to ask each of you this: How has music helped you, if it has? Do you see it as a universal language? Do you think it’s bad for us? Are lyrics becoming too profound and in turn can influence us in the wrong way? These are just example questions but I want you to share your opinions with us briefly.’’

OOC: You lovelies Thanks for your responses! For this ‘open’ question, feel free to have your charrie expound on their responses if you like even if Kay says to share their opinions ‘briefly’ From the responses, I’ve gathered that a lot of them are fond of music. We shall carry on in the usual 24 hours! Remember, catch up IS allowed! *encourages* <3

"Oh, sorry Derf!" She honestly hadn't seen him there, and could have sworn the seat next to her bestie was free. "Are you okay?"

"No need," Sam said, seeing him going to move elsewhere. Apparently Champion Dora was popular, and that was okay. She could go elsewhere. Sam grabbed her stuff, and gave an apologetic look to both Derf and Professor Stewart before moving to another desk, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. Sorry for the interruption and any bruised knees.

And it seemed that the lesson wasn't about to get better. How had music helped her? A universal language? What did she think of the lyrics? Sam frowned, never having thought about it like that. She'd spent most of her formative years without having a choice what she listened too. Only the music playing in shops, which wasn't generally all that exciting, and the buskers around London, who ranged in quality.

It was only recently that she'd her own wireless. Honestly, she liked a whole eclectic mix, but she didn't feel an authority on the subject. She liked different things in different moods. Sometimes she needed white noise for studying, to help block out the conversations going on in the common room, and sometimes she liked more upbeat or rocky stuff. She didn't dance though, or anything like that.

"Some music helps me concentrate," she added to the discussion. "But it can help you get pumped up too. So...I guess I'm saying it can reflect and change our moods more than just words." Whether that counted as a universal language though, she wasn't sure.

"I'MOKAYPROFES-SSOR!" he squeaked in assurance, even adding a quick salute for extra emphasis. He quickly turned back to Dora's friend - who he KNEW was like...super SUPER special to her...kind of like how Abey was SUPER SUPER special to him - to insist that she take the seat instead...but she was already going elsewhere...

"But...but...but..." he began to protest, but it was too little too late. He would HAVE to seek her out later and give her a chocolate frog or something. She could even keep the card...

But now class was moving on which gave him little option but to sliiiiiiiiiiide back into his seat. Doing so, Derf thought long and hard about the question because, well, he honestly hadn't thought much about music. His lullabies at night had mostly been nature sounds and bird calls. Organic sleep therapy...or something to that effect was what mum and dad had referred to it as.

But just as he was about to raise his hand to voice this little thought - because what was considered music was kiiiiiiiiind of subjective, right? - when Head Boy Rooney Brown happened.
SPOILER!!: when the head boy happened XD

Rula couldn't help but grin at Rooney's outburst, and then Abey loudly agreeing. Cuties, they both were.

And as for her answer, she pretty much agreed with what a lot of the others had said, but she still raised her hand to offer a few thoughts anyway. "Music is definitely a universal language for the most part. Even if you're listening to a song in a language you can't speak yet, it can still speak to you in a way just by listening to the instruments and the flow of the words. And music without lyrics, like Katy mentioned, can especially be universal, since the instruments take all of the focus and can really impact you." She paused for a moment, gathering her thoughts, then continued, "Though also music can be a pretty unique experience to each person too. One song that impacts you might not affect someone else the same way, or maybe they interpret it in a way that's different from you. And that can be a really interesting way to find out new things about someone else."

Gryffindor for life Notorious Niffler

This lesson was so weird already. Usually, that was a good thing because it meant Emmeline was learning new stuff about Muggles, but today it was just a general sort of weirdness. She beamed at Derf as he told her about the list of cruppy names he'd made for her; she was really touched that he'd made a WHOLE list just for her! "Thanks so much, Derf! But then there was lots of confusion because an older kid had kind of tossed him out of his seat while Emmeline looked on with wide eyes. Fortunately, Derf said he was okay and the older kid left to sit somewhere else -- even though Derf had been super nice and had offered to be the one to leave. Emmeline thought it was really good of the older girl to be nice and give her friend the seat though. In all of this confusion, thoughts of the all-important cruppy names list slipped the first year's mind.

Oh, and she had forgotten that Dora said she didn't have to call her "miss." The "miss" thing came from Mum, actually, because Mum was always saying how great big kids were and how Emmeline should be super respectful to them.

Anyway, time for Muggle Studies. Emmeline was a little disappointed that the American thing had been the right answer, because it was the obvious one. Even she had known that. And, as much as she liked wizard music, she was also slightly disappointed that this lesson would be all about Muggle music, because she felt like that was something she could learn on her own. Oh well, maybe she'd like some of the songs or something.

Emmeline giggled as Rooney gave a really loud, really good answer. She thought he had it perfectly right, but she hadn't answered the professor's first question, so she supposed she had better think of an answer to this one. Raising her hand, she spoke sort of quietly: "Music can be like magic. It has the power to heal sometimes, and to make your heart race, or to be reallllly soothing." Most of that she'd learned from Nanny, who liked making up lullabies to her pet pygmy puffs and sometimes Mum's cat too. Emmeline had also seen it make her mum feel happy when she'd been in a really bad mood, so she guessed that counted as healing powers? Anyway, Nanny always said music was a form of magic and Nanny hadn't been wrong yet.

Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.

Music was the root to everything.

Think about it. Without music... nothing would be the same. There wouldn't be any soul. There wouldn't be music when you walked down the corridors. When you are working out or training, theres not music to keep you focused or motivated. Even studying comes down to music. You learn best where theres a song attached to what you're learning.

Music it life.

Noelle laughed at Rooney's outburst. But he was totally right. She gave an applause. "I agree. Music is life. It is the soul to everything. When I train, I use music to motivate me and keep me going. When I'm studying, I used songs to help me memorize and learn certain parts of spells. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without Christmas music that uplifts you and makes you feel that joy. Even the simplest things as in waiting in the healer's office.. that light music keeps you calm before you go in." That was more long winded then what she meant it to be but..

Nonetheless.
It was true.

dream until your • dreams come true ~ Human pygmy puff

American music. Shay was right. That was what they would be learning about today. Sounded good to her. There were other things that the artists had in common and Shay listened with interest as those things were revealed. Then it was time for another question or set of questions actually.

Shay raised her hand. She had some thoughts she wanted to share and some things she didn't. When it was her turn, she began to speak. "I think music is universal. It can make you feel different things.......happy, sad. You don't even have to be able to understand the words to like or......to understand the music. I guess some music can be bad, but generally it's a way of expressing oneself. Better through music than in some other negative way, I guess. I can't imagine a world without music. That would be a sad world."

What Shay didn't want to share was that music was a huge part of her life. Of course as a dancer, music was required. But it was more than that. She had music when she didn't have anything else. It was a part of her, a part she couldn't live without.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Well.....that was one way to say it.

Jessa blinked at her Prefect--the Head Boy--Rooney. With an outburst like that, Jessa forgot all about her question of why they were learning about music from Americans when England had it's own music industry. Surely it wouldn't have set them back by anything to learn about what the muggles in their own country listened to before looking across the pond. With the Americans here, she reckoned they could have given this part of the lesson--only outside a lesson setting because Merlin knew the Third Year was glad they didn't have to have classes with them. How would she learn????

Suffice to say she wasn't much a fan of them based on all she'd seen so far.

But yes, Rooney. He was awful passionate about this topic, wasn't he? What sort of response did one give after him? Maybe he should have gone last because the Ravenclaw wasn't nearly as into it.

Every time she convinced herself to speak, someone else went and added an answer she couldn't top until eventually, the young girl wasn't sure she wanted to offer up a response at all. Silently, she scribbled a few notes here and there. Not all of it, as they were simply opinions but enough of it to make herself look productive while she waited for the lesson to move on.

Ah, they're going to discuss about American music. Now she wondered if music in other countries are way much different with those that Professor K had played. Probably not really. Hearing the Head Boy's outburst, Merlin, The Gryffindor just shook her head and tried so hard to not make any judgement about it. Maybe he was just very passionate about it.

Was music a universal language? "Yeah, I think so." Ava answered the question as she raised her hand. "Although some lyrics of the songs can be not appropriate for children, like there are some songs using the profanity. And when young kids listened to it there is a possibility that they will say it without knowing what it actually means." She used to babysit her niece and her brother warned her to not play some certain songs when Kiara was around.

And she had a little question for the Professor. "Professor, since you're talking about American music, does it mean that British music is not that hugely popular as the Americans?"

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Kay was perched beside the whiteboard, marker in hand, ready to make notes on the points that were going to be listed. One by one, she called on the kiddos to give their answers.

SPOILER!!: Tenny! <3

Has music helped him? Oh boy where could he even begin... "Well Professor, music is what my dad and I bond over, he's a big fan and collector of most the tracks you played-- heck he named me after an American comedy rock band called Tenacious D...." how's that for helping out eh? "Music-- singing, playing instruments-- it helps me in many ways, its a form of self-expression, its great therapy, its a natural mood picker-upper. Good music does all that and more. Also good music transcends not just languages but also cultures, it transcends time. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro has the same effect today as it did three hundred years ago."

Now as for music being bad.... "Hmm... music for the most part serves to inspire, it serves to bridge the gap, but some artists have used catchy tunes to glorify bad behavior, instigate anarchy. So I guess like magic, it depends on who wields it that determines if the effects are good or bad."

Tenacious certainly had quite a lot to say on the matter when Kay called on him. It made her heart soar to hear him say so many great things. “The mystery has been solved of where you got that name,’’ she told him, eyes twinkling. She had always wondered about the name; it wasn’t one of those common ones. “Excellent! I agree with both the disadvantages and advantages as well as the point you’re making about Mozart. It’s the choices that are made by the band or singers as well as us, the listeners, that determine our perception of music. For example, someone who likes profanity as part of music will not necessarily say something negative about it and vice versa.’’

SPOILER!!: Olivia! <3

Music was like it was its own language. She nodded her head to everything that Tenacius had said. "As Ace said, it's great for therapy. I enjoy playing the piano because its both relaxing and challenging. It can be challenging when you are learning a new piece to play but you put time into it and then you learn how to play it." She smiled. "Music is like mathematics, art, or theatre. It is something that is always changing and evolving. It also plays a major part in human culture and identity. It's an art form that can discuss political, cultural, and social issues. "

As for the bad part... Some types of music can negatively impact cultures. "Some types of music can encourage negative behaviors across cultures, such as toxic relationships, treatment of other people, etc. Music can impact people's moods in a negative way. Sometimes music can be depressing and make you feel that way. In addition, different types of rhythms or different tempos can stress people out." She had listened to songs that had stressed her out way too much before and had to switch the song pronto!

The woman could not agree more. “Indeed. Much like humans evolve, always developing in some way, so does music. I would like to think this happens when we evolve as well. New technology can be used to bring a different sound, new situations to inspire lyrics and so on. As for the negativities, it all comes down to choices again. Some listeners are so fond of a particular artiste that they take the lyrics rather seriously. The sad aspect of music listening I’d like to think comes around from the memories that the songs bring back.’’

"MUSIC IS PROFESSIONS OF LOVE AND HATE AND PRIDE AND DISGUST AND DISAPPOINTMENT AND TRUTH AND LOOOOOOOOOOOVE, PROFESSOR."

OH. MY.

Kay never ceased to be amazed when it came to Rooney’s dramatic responses. She had come to expect them in most of her classes but still… and what did she think of that? “Wonderfully worded, Mr Bronwyn! I could not have said that better myself!’’

Clap! Clap! Clap! Rooney deserved that applause.

How has music helped her? Universal language? Too profound? Before Skylar could formulate a response, however, Rooney happened. And any words that the fourth year had at her tongue, escaped her, her lips feeling unusually parched and she was left speechless. Clearing her throat, she reached into her bag for a cup, and was about to conjure water, when she remembered this was muggle studies. No magic. She would just have to force her saliva glands to work properly.

One minute, two minutes.

"Mus-*ahem*-ic, It's not really a universal language, unless it's just instrumental, but words themselves would be difficult to understand in a foreign language. I'm sorry, Professor, may I conjure some water?" If she asked permission, than maybe it would be okay, because thirst here. Or the Professor could conjure some for her?

Kay disagreed with this but this was Skylar’s opinion and she was not going to hound the Slytherin for what she believed in. “Don’t you think you can be able to feel the mood of the song through the beats and melodies of the song even if it were in a different language?’’ Water? Well, she wasn’t about to let Skylar die of thirst. “You may do so this once.’’

He supposed some songs he had listened to, that had lyrics sounding quite a bit different from the tone of the music, would make it difficult to truly appreciate if you didn't know the language. But other music he had listened to from various parts of the country...

"I think the general tone of music, in most circumstances, is universal. Like there's a Korean song I listened to that's a love song between this guy and girl... It's like I could picture them singing it, even though I didn't know the words. Dad helped me look up the translation on the Internet, though, and that seemed to give it more meaning. But some song, the lyrics and the tone of the music don't match, and in those cases it's completely different. Like an upbeat sounding song with really depressing or creepy lyrics, you wouldn't get the complete meaning of the song without knowing what they were saying." He thought about it some more. "Music is really important to us in my family. We all have our favorite songs, favorite singers, favorite styles... And some music makes us remember things. Like songs played at dad's weddings remind him of those times, or ones played at funerals he'd been to remind him of those people. I haven't been to a wedding or funeral yet, but dad says that kinda stuff is really emotional for him. I tend to like upbeat pop songs myself."

Yes! Kyle understood to a point what she was trying to say to Skylar. “It’s always a great idea to research the meaning of lyrics. Even if the songs are in a language you understand, you can still research to view the opinions of others and how they interpret the lyrics and the meaning. After all, almost everyone interprets something differently. Yes, it’s the memories we make that we associate songs with so when we listen to them, even if it happens to be years later, we recall all the said memories.’’

Turning back to the professor, she raised her hand.

"I agree with Rooney. Music can be about all kinds of emotions, both negative and positive. Personally, music usually doesn't completely switch my mood, but it can amplify it depending on how I feel. Like for example, if I'm angry and feel like protesting (even though I can't right now) then Green Day and Twisted Sister are good bands to listen to. Often I just let a song play repeatedly in my head because I love its feel so much. And yes, music can amplify negative behavior, but there are many more examples of it helping good behavior than bad. Anything can be used for bad purposes, but music is mostly just good fun. It's a universal language like you said, because even if I didn't understand the words - the music still can be fun to listen to."

The rock scene. Kay knew this is where Kitty belonged because they had talked about it before. Aside from that, her goth appearance gave it away. “Indeed music is for fun, for entertainment purposes or in the case of the artistes, it’s their way of earning a living. Using music to help you rid yourself of negative vibes is a good idea.’’ For example, motivational songs.

It was so sudden...and so unexpected that she accidentally knocked her inkwell off the desk, causing it to hit the floor; shattering into a million pieces. BLINK BLINK BLINK. Moving quickly to clean up her mess, the blonde mumbled various apologies to Professor Stewart, Dora... whoever else... using her wand to clear away the inky black mass on the floor. And the glass shards...because... um, she didn't want anyone to cut themselves. Broken glass was dangerous...

Sigh, Bronwyn. Some warning next time? Please?

Clearing her throat, Liv moseyed back around to retake her seat. The mess was cleaned up, and she had an extra inkwell, so it was really no harm, no foul. Gosh. Willing her heart to slow from it's racing, she refocused on her notes...What had the question been again?

Oh, right....music. What did it mean to her? How had it affected her life? Etc, etc, etc.

"Professor, as someone who's danced ballet for over ten years," Since she was THREE YEARS OLD, yep. That was what time and dedication looked like. "...music is an integral part of my performances, and I feel like...because I have that close relationship with music, that it tends to mean a bit more to me than it might others." Save for Rooney A. Bronwyn, apparently... Geezus. "When you're meant to interpret sound into movement, there's something very intimate about the experience. You learn about yourself in how you choose for that interpretation to come across to others. Say...if they're paying to see your show." Ahem, that wasn't her entire answer...Olivia had so much to say about this, and hopefully Professor Stewart would bear with her, because... this could come across long-winded. "As for how it's changed my life, I direct you to most magical and muggle musical soundtracks from the past hundred years."

Also... ALSO..."I have to say that music has the power to move between worlds. Considering how integrated we are as witches and wizards. As in...we don't just enjoy music made within the magical community. With many of us having muggle family members, and having been exposed to most of this music you're playing today. It's a part of those family member's history, thus making it a part of ours by association. So, it IS something great to bond over, as Ace has said." "It makes us more alike than we care to admit." Because there were some people who saw witches and wizards as being superior to muggles, and that sort of thinking really bothered her. No one was better than anyone else. Not ever. They were all human beings... People like her just had a little bit of magic. It wasn't an elevating fact of life, here. "But also...aside from blurring the lines between magical and muggle... it hops across country borders, too. Like how we, as Brits and Scots, enjoy American music, French, Italian, German, Japanese... It has a way of promoting unity without necessarily meaning to. We may have so many differences, but music reminds us that there are things we have in common. Interests we share."

Mmmm, was that it? Was that all she had to say? Come on, Olivia!brain. Was there more? ".....Sorry, Professor."

Smashed inkwell? “That’s fine, Ms Phillips.’’ Kay knew it was because of Rooney’s outburst this had happened. Still, she wasn’t blaming anyone. These things happened. She listened to Olivia’s words and do you know what they told her? They told her this young woman was passionate about the ballet. “I simply like how you describe music. Like Mr Bronwyn’s, those are heartfelt words. With regards to Muggle music crossing over to the wizarding world and country borders, I agree it has helped us to be closer to each other.’’ The power of music was impressive. “No need to apologise. Your opinions have been most insightful.’’

This answer! Kay was wondering who would be the first to bring it up. “Yes, it does! For some of us at least. I know a few persons who will always listen to music while studying. Some say it’s more of a distraction when used that way but I disagree.’’ This was one of the reasons why she had made sure to put an abundance of music in the Fun Room via Ipods and the computers.

He was, perhaps, appreciating the fire a little too much, because it took Abey a few moments to realise that Professor Something was already properly delving right into the class topic.

Sooooo... oh. OH! This was a question Abey could answer! He had LOOOOOOADS of things to say about what music meant to him and how it influenced him and stuff BECAUSE he actually sort of played the guitar because of West and, okay, it had been a while since he had done so, but it had been something he could really really do! And as long as he remembered what he was playing, it was a way he could feel actually smart at something. Also, singing. There was a song for every occasion, and singing made Abey's heart happy.

He had JUST opened his mouth to say all of this (and then some, probably actually), when Rooney Bronwyn... um... Rooney-Bronwyn'd.

Abey stared, mouth hanging open, at the Head Boy, a little stunned and also not entirely sure any answer he gave could really live up to that actually.

Sooooo... he wasn't going to try. Instead, with a raised VICTORY FIST, Abey chimed in afterwards with:

"HEAR, HEAR!"

That meant he agreed, right?

Abey certainly looked much more cheerful and content. Wonderful! Now she didn’t have to worry about him being frozen. She was about to call on him to give his opinion but he beat her to it. His loud proclamation made her laugh softly. Kay loved it that the kiddos were so enthusiastic about music. “Thank you, Mr Botros!’’

Goodness.. he did get very excited.

Kay nodded. “So true.’’ That piece of the answer about ‘making friends or relationships’ was exactly why she had chosen to have the topic done today. Since there were guests with them, music was a topic that could help her kiddos form new friendships. “Positive notes, yes. The more to motivate and inspire others.’’

Katy had reminded them of an important bit. “Correct! Instrumental music cannot be forgotten. It can be just as calming and soothing. I found that this is particularly true for piano pieces.’’ If only she could play that instrument!

There was blinking. LOADS of blinking. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOADS OF IT.

Or that. Yes. That answer was far more enthusiastic than his own so he was just going to nod and point.

Derf was okay. Kay breathed a sigh of relief. “Very well,’’ she told him with a small smile. “Find yourself a seat.’’ Really, it was just an accident but everyone needed to be careful especially around the smaller kiddos.

The blinking told her Derf was just as surprised by Rooney’s outburst as some of the others. The pointing and nodding told her the Hufflepuff was in wild agreement with the statements.

SPOILER!!: Rula! <3

Rula and Kay obviously shared the same sentiments. “Yes, indeed! You and I believe the same things about music, Ms Botros.’’ She loved that her students had already formed their own opinions on the topic, even if they varied from hers.

SPOILER!!: Emmeline! <3

“Indeed it does things to your heart. Also, that’s a lovely way of putting it, Ms Sparkes. Music is indeed like magic.’’ This was written on the whiteboard; the phrase she meant, alongside Rooney’s and some of Olivia’s. These descriptions stood out.

Passionate words yet again but this time from Noelle. It was understandable as to why this was so. “I do get where you are coming from, Ms Summers. Music can be with us and help us in ways that a person can’t.’’ Music was therapy.

No response from Jessa? Kay had seen her look at Rooney with surprise on her face. It was possible she agreed with what he said. At least she was making some notes. The woman offered her a small smile before directing her attention back to the class.

The Professor nodded. “Very true! Music is an art form, it expresses what the singers feel and those lyrics or beats can make us feel the emotions. The world would be a rather dull place.’’

SPOILER!!: Ava! <3

"Correct. This is why it is important to monitor the songs the younger ones listen to.'' Though it cannot be helped at all time. After all, there were times when there where no responsible adults would be around. "British music is certainly popular and looking back at all the hits our singers and bands have put out, I don't see why our music is not as popular.''

* * * * * * *

Kay did not set her marker down though she glanced at her watch. It was almost time to progress to the lesson’s activity. “Okay, everyone! Those were some very insightful points you all made. It makes me happy to see that so many of you have already formed your own opinions. Before we head to The Fun Room for today’s activity, I’d like to give go some information on the changes of America’s music over the years.

“The best known genres in America include country, blues and rock and roll. It all began with the Native Americans who practiced various forms of music. However, as persons from various walks of life moved to America due to colonization and the arrival of immigrants, new instruments and music styles were discovered. The immigrants brought with them European polka, Chinese and Japanese music, and Polish fiddling, Scottish and Irish music as well as other styles such as Indian, French, German and Latin.’’
As she spoke, she wrote in jottings on the board. She was aiming to list the common types of music and the years in which they were deveolped and or became incorporated into the American culture.

“It is true that the melodies, harmonies as well as lyrics have changed though some have remained constant as Mr Salander had pointed out earlier. Some of you have touched on what inspires these lyrics and I’ll broaden this area a little more. Let’s take a look at some time frames. In the sixties, there were more songs written about war. In the 19th century, African American and Scottish music had a great influence on popular culture. Rock became an important part of the culture in the 1950s while heavy metal, punk and funk rocks became popular over the next few decades when rock, country and soul musics were mixed together or with another form of genre. In the 1970s, hip hop began to emerge when African- Americans in New York City started speaking lyrics over beats. But it wasn’t until the beginning of the 21st century that hip hop become an integral part of the culture.

''Soul music originated in the 1950s to the 1960s and is a combination of African-American gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz. It is interesting to note that ‘pop’ or ‘popular music’ originated in both the United States and United Kingdom in the mid 1950s. Pop music is eclectic, meaning it incorporates elements from other styles such as urban, rock, Latin as well as country ’’

Kay paused for breath as she finally set down the marker. That was quite a lot of information. Honestly, she hadn’t known some of those facts until she had researched for the lesson. She beamed around at the class. “Is there anything you would like me to repeat? I know that was quite a bit for you to take in.’’

When she determined that no one had any questions or requests, Kay spoke again. “You may finish up taking your notes after which I would like you to orderly make your way to The Fun Room. You may have a seat at one of the chairs or couches until I join you.’’

OOC: I REALLY loved reading those responses. My music- loving heart is agreeing with each of your charries LOL. Please make sure you make a post here before posting at the LINKED Fun Room since I created a new thread for this. You shall, of course, have 24 hours to do so!

Kyle gathered up his things and grinned. The Fun Room! This was going to be a treat. He knew it! Hearing all about how music evolved was interesting, though some of it went a little over his head. He hoped that wouldn't go against him in the Fun Room activity. With a little skip to his step, he made his way over to the Fun Room.

Did the Professor not hear what she was saying? Before she could clarify her opinion, however, Skylar conjured that much needed water thanks to the head boy's outburst. Taking a sip, she nodded appreciatively at the Professor, as the woman went into a history lesson about the genres of music. Intriguing, for sure, and lots of theory. Which also meant, lots of possibility this would be on the exam and thus, the fourth year dutifully took notes.

"Just one last thing, if you're feeling the mood of the music through the beats and melodies, that would be through the instrumental part. If it's a language that is foreign to you, you likely don't understand what lyrics are being said, but yes, you can feel it. It's just not through the words, necessarily." But that was technicalities and they were moving on ... into a different room. Collecting her things, the fourth year made her way out after the first year Slytherin boy with the familiar last name

Kane was VERY disappointed that they wouldn't be doing any guitar playing or anything in this lesson...at least, not YET. When she announced they were moving in to the Fun Room, his spirits perked up just a bit. Maybe this was his chance!

Granted, he only knew like...four chords. BUT. STILL. It was something!

He finished up his notes - most of which went right in one ear and out the other - and then gathered up his things to head in to the Fun Room.

Shay's pen was going a mile a minute. She was taking notes and trying to keep up with everything that the professor was saying. There was so much to learn about American music, some things she knew and a lot that she didn't.

When the professor finished talking, Shay took a few minutes to finish up her notes. Then, it was time for a change of location. She stuffed all of her supplies into her book bag and prepared to leave. To the Fun Room.

Kitty didn't have any more questions, at least not at the moment. It was fun listening to her give a brief history of Muggle American music, she really enjoyed that part. She scribbled away with her (Mugglemade) pencil to catch everything.

Right now she was excited to see what they'd be doing for the activity portion of the lesson.

Standing up with the others after finishing scribbling her notes, Kitty headed towards the fun room...

Gryffindor for life Notorious Niffler

Things were looking up for Emmeline now; today's lesson had gone from "weird" to "pretty good" in the first year's mind. Professor Stewart had liked her answer -- she'd even written it on the board! Emmeline gave the professor a HUGE smile. It wasn't often that she had *good* answers in class; usually her answers were just okay or flat out wrong. Of course, she had just been repeating what Nanny had taught her, but she did believe that.

Emmeline was pleasantly surprised as she took notes on the professor's lecture. It wasn't boring like she'd thought it might be, and she became a lot happier at the prospect of doing Muggle music activities. Sometimes she thought morning classes did something weird to her brain, where everything seemed kind of bad at first then turned good as she felt more awake.

Speaking of activities, apparently it was time to move to a different room now. Emmeline repacked her bag, and looked around for Derf, Dora, and Abey to see what they thought of this. She hadn't ever been in this fun room before, so she wasn't sure if this moving thing was good or not.

Oh! She still had Mel's blanket! Emmeline weaved between the desks until she found the older girl and gave her her blanket back. "Thanks for letting me borrow it!" With that, she bounced back up to the front of the room and Derf, Dora, and Abey. "You guys ready to go?" She kind of wanted to stick with people she knew during lessons, so she'd wait for at least one of them to be ready to walk over with her, if they were okay with that.

WILD agreement was a bit too generous a phrase, but Derf thought that the Head Boy's answer was just as good as any, yes. Although Derf DID prefer the sounds of nature over...whatever was currently playing. If he was being honest. Which begged a question really...but seeing as they were being told to move he held it in for now as he got up and to followed everyone else out of the classroom. "Yup!" he chirped, grabbing Emmeline's hand and dragging her along with him.

Tenacius beamed. Yep that was the story of the boy behind the name. He very nearly was called Zildjan too, just to keep the tradition in the family of being named after musical instruments with great prestige. The one time his birth mother was right about something about telling his father no. And so Tenacius it was.

Oh and American musical history. He loves this, but he wouldve loved it better if they actually had samples of these different genres throughout history. The entire 20th century was such a musical renaissance, how can anybody not revel in it?

But oh they be going someplace? Mini fieldtrip time? So there goes the Gryffindor Ace, scrambling after the Professor outta the classroom....

SUMMER FOREVER

Trying to take notes AND also concentrate on what the professor was saying at the same time was a difficult task, especially when the information was in so much detail. So she gave up writing and instead listened to what the professor had to say.. and hip hop? What was THAT? A genre of music? How had she never heard of it before? She was going to have to listen to more muggle music.

.. and then they were instructed to move to another room so Etta quickly got up, put her things into her bag and followed the other students out of the classroom, wondering what the professor had in store for them.

Melbourne looked up and listened to everyone answer their questions about how music made them feel and smiled. How did it make her feel? It was almost like it was like she was transcending time, like it didn’t matter what was going on around her, like her problems, her world was a mere blip in time compared to the utter beauty of music.

Raising her hand she flushed slightly and said, ”its…like I’m no longer here at times, I just feel the music in every fiber of my body and am a part of it…like I transcend space and time while I listen to it…” she paused for a moment before adding ”this is even more evident when I listen to old recording of Yo-Yo Ma’s Cello Suites…specifically the Unaccompanied Cello Suite Number 1 in G-Major which is inspired by Bach’s work” she spoke softly, it was almost as if she was in a dreamy state just thinking about his work. She spoke her grin still in place as she sat down and took notes on all of the music she was bringing up…so many notes BUT they were doing something soon and Mel just looked around as people began to shift to the Fun Room.

This…was going to be fun but nerve wracking she was sure of it….still, the little cellist loved music so maybe this would be good. She thought as she got up and began moving to the next room.

Uhhh... finish up taking notes... suuuuuure. That's... totally what Abey had been doing all this time. Totally. Actually. Definitely had not been staring stupidly at the professor as she launched into that big whole lecture to do with music with... really just a lot of words. Mhm. Definitely not doing that.

But the point was that they were MOVING ON, into... THE FUN ROOM, which... well, a room called THE FUN ROOM could never be unpleasant, could it?

"Ready!" Abey chimed in, following after Emmeline and Derf. Hopefully it was warm in there, or at least had the option of another fireplace to sit by.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

....but she had questions......

It wasn't necessarily that she wanted anything repeated because if she never got it the first time, there was little chance saying it again would make it suddenly click--can't repeat the same method and expect different results, y'know? Her questions were more along the line of practicality but she didn't even know where to begin. It HAD been a lot of information to sit and listen through, so much so that the young Ravenclaw had been slipping in and out of attention, catching only bits and pieces here and there.

As best she could, the 13 year old scribbled down the things she'd caught but consider her, for the most part, lost.

Slowly she rose from her seat and re-packed her bag. She watched Abey, Derf and Emmeline hurry off but there was something of a thick cloud in her head that she was now trying to clear so she would lag behind. Maybe she'd get the notes from someone else, see if she could get someone to make it a little less textbook-y for her.

Audio learner she was not. For now, she followed the others from the room, trying not to look as lost as she felt.

The applause was definitely appreciated, as were the looks from several of his peers. Rooney Bronwyn excelled at communicating his point at an ear-splitting volume for sure. It was a talent that he had been practicing for many years, honestly. He gathered up his things, ready to move to where their activity was going to be held, excited to see what Professor Stewart had planned for them. And if it would properly peak his musical interests enough for another outburst.

They were leaving now, yes?

Ah. Roo followed the group, making sure that he had all of his things and that anyone that may have needed to walk with someone was following with him. Head Boy duties. Saaaafety first!

Professor Stewart was a lovely, understanding woman. Olivia was quite fond of her. "Anytime, Professor. Anytime." It was said teasingly, as she was still slightly embarrassed about allowing her words to run away with her. But then again, she was good about latching onto topics and rambling, so...whenever an opinion was required, just let her know.

Full of opinions, this one.

Oh...they weren't....staying in here today? What was all this about? Not really digging change too much, the blonde began packing up her things. Apparently, there were couches in this other room (sorry we haven't paid a visit yet, Professor), so that was a plus in her eyes. Yes, let her go and make herself comfortable.

Hi ho. HI HO... Ho dee hum.

That was just a LOT of information.

Was she going to write them all in her notes? Nope.

So Ava was just listening to Professor K's explanation and her answer about British music was as much popular as American. If so, why they were talking about American music history today? But eh, the Gryffindor would not ask about that since now they were asked to move.

Packing her stuffs, Ava then followed the others moving to the fun room.
