Muggle Studies Lesson 1- The Evolution of Popular American Music
It was an average day in November, a reminder that the warm weather was slowly being replaced with winter. Nevertheless, the windows of the Muggle Studies classroom were opened (though students had the option to close them); natural light and fresh air streamed in. As you enter the room after Professor Kay greets you that morning, you notice something: the music playing softly from the laptop sitting atop the Professor’s desk. She had compiled a playlist ranging from various artists such as Taylor Swift, Soundgarden, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, the Backstreet Boys, Metallica- just to name a few.
All of these artists and bands have one thing in common. Can you figure it out? Have a seat as you try to do so or simply just enjoy the beats. Feel free to break out in dance or even a head bang. Class will begin shortly as it will be 10 AM soon!
The whiteboard stands before the class which has been set up in the usual setting- two sections of desks and chairs in neat rows and columns with a path in the middle so that Kay can easily access the back of the room if needed.
OOC: Hihihi! Welcome to the first OOC lesson We’ll get started in 24 hours! Chatting is allowed but please keep it to a minimum. Pssst! Feel free to let your charries react crazily to the music if they wish (singing loudly, dancing, reacting dramatically to the lyrics etc ) Get creative!CLASS HAS BEGUN!
Melbourne would have tried to enter the classroom even if she didn’t have muggle studies at this period. The music was a great thing to hear, sure…maybe the songs and bands were all quite different in musical styling’s but it was fun to hear them.
”Hello Professor Stewart” Melbourne Johanson greeted as she walked into the room. ”have you been having a nice term so far Professor?” Melbourne asked a kind smile on her face as she made her way toward the desks…hmm…maybe she should ask Professor Stewart if she could bring her water bottle to class…it was, after all in her bag along with the little jar of cut apple slices.
”Professor – I was wondering is it alright with you if I bring my water with me to class? If not I can leave it in my bag,” she asked as she took out her school supplies placing her textbook, pen case, notebooks and wand on her desk before quickly holstering her wand. This was muggle studies after all there likely would be no use for wands in this class…but still, on the off chance that something happened and a random portal monster appeared in class she wanted hers to be at the ready so she could help her friends whenever they were in need of course.

As Shay entered the Muggle Studies classroom two things greeted her. The first was the professor. The second was music, music that reminded her of home. "Good morning Professor", Shay said. "I like that music. Does that have something to do with what we'll be working on today?" If so, Shay was all in.
Heading toward an empty desk, Shay saw her housemate. "Hi Melbourne", she said with a smile. Shay reached her seat and sat down. Since she was pretty early, she had time to get herself organized and ready for class. Taking out all of her supplies, she arranged them on her desk. Finally Shay got her textbook out and then she was ready. Hopefully class would be starting soon. In the meantime, she would just enjoy the music.

Having been up for awhile already, Henry was wide awake when he walked into the Muggle Studies classroom. "Good morning, Professor," he greeted her cheerfully as he turned to look for a place to sit. The Hufflepuff prefect gave a smile and wave to the Gryffindor girls already present, then found a seat near the middle of the room.
As he got his things out for class, he took note of the music playing. It wasn't anything he recognized as current, but he thought it was likely Muggle music, which would make sense given that this was Muggle Studies. Maybe they'd be learning about Muggle music today, which he did like.

Beckoned by the soft strains of intriguing music, Sophie pinned her head into the Muggle Studies classroom. She gazed around the room, searching for the source of the sound. Though she couldn't find anything that could possibly be emitting such lovely sounds, she was very interested by the Muggle artifacts lining the walls. "Wow," she whispered, eyes big at the sight. "Why didn't anyone tell me how amazing Muggle objects are?"
Still staring around the room in awe, Sophie took several more steps in. She pulled back a chair and sat down slowly. "I wasn't planning to take this class, but now I think I should. I mean, this looks incredibly wonderful! Loads better than Divination was, anyway." She shuddered, remembering the disastrous Divination lesson about moles. With any luck, this class would go well for her.
Was that..... mUUUUUSIC ABEY COULD HEAR? And coming from the Muggle Studies classroom which was EXACTLY where he was headed. For class, or something. He had been undecided on whether he was even going to GO today, and had decided he would peek into the classroom to see if it looked like a theory heavy lesson, but it turned out that his mind was made up when he was still halfway down the corridor.
Into the classroom Abey came, hurrying a little so that he didn't get left outside on his own. He nodded his head along to the music even though it all sounded mega old actually, because old didn't necessarily mean BAD.
What WAS bad, though, were those open windows. There was NO NEED to have windows OPEN in NOVEMBER when they were in SCOTLAND.
NO NEED.
Not quite able to stop himself bopping his head to the music even despite his anti-open-window leanings, Abey went ahead and took a seat as close to the classroom door as he could get, and far farrrrr away from those open windows. He pulled his robes tighter around him too, for warmth. They were charmed, too, so it was nice and toasty inside of them. "Morning, Professor," came the obligatory respectful greeting.

Jessa didn't have an opinion on Muggle Studies. Not really. She'd spent 4 years living among muggles, leaving her with knowledge enough and the idea that she wasn't very keen on spending more time with them than she ever needed to.
The class wasn't so bad. Only thing was how it never really taught her things she was interested in and always seemed to provide information on things she already knew--save those times the topic was so far dated that she had no point of reference for it but even then, the concept would have been about the same.
The music playing as she entered the room didn't ring any bells. It certainly wasn't anything her parents or her old friends used to listen to leaving her with the impression the Professor had gone digging through the past again.
Never quite knew where those lessons were going.
Silently, Jessa moved to her seat, placing her instruments out on the table before her. "Morning Professor." She greeted, setting everything neatly in order. They wouldn't be listening to the music all lesson would they? They were alright and everything but, they would do nothing for her concentration when it got to that point.

Théodore entered the room and immediately noticed the music. It was interesting and sounds like the music the Americans were listening to at the feast for them. He liked it
"Hi Professor"
Théo started humming along to the song playing as he took his seat

Kitty was humming music even before she was close enough to the Muggle Studies classroom to hear the music coming from inside. She usually hummed when she was headed towards a class she particularly, and that certainly included Muggle Studies. On the way there she was humming a Green Day song. As soon as she heard a Beyoncé song (Lemonade) she switched to that.
"Good morning Professor Stewart," she interrupted her humming to greet the professor with a smile. "I recognize this song!"
After sitting down on one of the chairs, she commanded her pale Quill to float out of her bag. "Quick Quotes Quill, please write down the name of every song I recognize, at least until the lesson begins. Okay, this one to start off with." So she could look at them all later.
The music drifting down the corridor was interesting, to say the least. Emmeline didn't think she'd heard any of the songs before, but then she hadn't been allowed to listen to Muggle music at home. Muggle Studies lessons had been a bit of a shock at first; Mum and Dad always made Muggles out to be little more than "filth", as they put it. Nanny, however, had taught Emmeline that Muggles could be nice and considered people too; Muggle Studies had so far made Emmeline think that Nanny had the right of it. Muggles were just people with no magic, and that made the first year feel sorry for them.
As she entered the classroom, she was a little amazed to see that the Muggle music wasn't coming out of a Wizarding wireless device. It was coming out of a metal square thing that looked like it had a screen of some sort attached. Weird. "G'morning Professor," Emmeline said as she moved further into the room. Why was it so cold in here?
Oh, right. Windows. It was too early in the morning for much of anything short of playing with creatures in Emmeline's opinion. Stifling a yawn, she moved towards a good seat. Emmeline pulled her bag onto her lap and extracted her Gryffindor scarf from inside. She was already shivering slightly in her robes -- she got cold easily, okay? Instead of putting the scarf around her neck, she spread the fabric out over her lap so that it acted as a kind of blanket. Then it was time to drag out her usual school supplies onto her desk and wait for the lesson to start. She smiled and waved at Mr. Henry, Abey, Sophie, Jessa, and Theo, but another yawn kept her from talking. Her seat was in talking-distance to most of them anyway; she'd picked a desk towards the front this time, because that was the farthest away from the windows that she could get.

There was this vague music coming from down the corridor as Katy made her way into the Muggle Studies classroom. It became more pronounced until she was actually in the classroom, and then... Muggle music. She didn't mind, although it wasn't her favorite and was probably about a hundred years old. In fact, she twitched her hips and feet across the floor to her seat.
"Good day, Professor. How are you doing today? It's very pleasant outside, surprisingly." Talking about the weather was excellent conversational skills. Katy stretched out at her seat and tapped her fingers along the desktop to the music. Muggles had skills.
Melbourne looked over to Shayla when she heard the sixth year girls voice and grinned. ”Hey Shay,” she smiled over to the curly haired lioness and grinned…seriously her hair must have been the envy of the pride. Mel took a breath as she pulled her sweater closer against her body.
When Kitty walked into the room Mel waved over to the Ravenclaw girl. ”Hey Valentine,” the Gryffindor girl grinned and waved over to the Prefect. Looking over at the young Emmeline Mel had seen in the common room Mel couldn’t help but grin. ”Hey Emmeline are you cold?” Melbourne asked as she reached down into her bag, ”I’ve got a blanket in here I’ve been using whenever I want to study outside, its got a warming charm on it if you want to borrow it?” she asked as she pulled the blanket from her bag.

He knows these tunes! And thus his entering the classroom bopping along to the rhythm"Mornin' Professor Stewart! GREAT playlist." he grinned happily, and dancey danced the long way around-- yes hello friends-- before finally settling onto a seat.

Etta entered the classroom with a bright smile on her face, feeling rather good about herself this morning.. for some odd reason. She practically skipped into the room, greeting the professor cheerfully. "Good morning! Hope you're doing well today." .. and hey, there was music. She couldn't recognise the song that was playing but it was rather.. catchy. Maybe they'd get to learn about muggle music today.
"Hey to all you lovely people." She greeted her fellow classmates and friends with another bright smile before she took a seat somewhere near the middle of the classroom. Today was going to be a good day, she just knew it.

Bouncing along the corridor to the Muggle Studies classroom, Derf was completely unaware that his movements soon fell in sync with the very music being played within the room. A fact that he only became aware of as he stepped inside proper. Music? Were they learning about muggle music today? Or No-Maj music? It was a neat little term he had learned from one of his new American friends, dude. Dude bro dude No-Maj dude. While he wasn't entirely sure whaaaaaaaaat the different was between muggle rock and W-Rock - minus the obvious blood status part - he was eager to see if they would be LEARNING any instruments today. He had been debating the guitar himself for a a week or so long while now so his blue eyes were loads hopeful as he looked towards the professor.
"Good day!" he grinned. Must...resist...sitting...next to...Abey...again... "Hi Emmeline," he greeted, sliding into the seat beside the Gryffindor. Hello older Gryffindor girl with a blanket that he did not know. "Do you still need help coming up with a name for your cruppy?"

Okay so... Dora was up early. She had been doing research all morning so it was with no great consequence that she was able to make her way down to Muggle studies on time. Her face was pinched with thought as she entered the classroom... that was blasting music. Fun.
Not really.
Dora had a headache. And the cold air coming in was no great help, but it was better than stifling hot conditions and stake air, right? Casting a nonverbal warming spell on herself as she moved into the room, the Gryffindor gave the professor a brief smile. "Morning, Professor. " Because who knew iF it easy good yet? The woman got a small nod as well before she made for a desk near Derf. And Emmeline? She was sure that was her name. Yes.
"Hope you guys don't mind if I sit here. " Not that she would move if they did...

Skylar had no trouble finding the Muggle Studies classroom today, because she heard the tunes as she was on the staircases up to the first floor. Not that she normally had trouble, but today, especially no trouble. Hearing the tunes playing though definitely like it a high note in her own personal life; as if the music was connected to her.
"Hello Professor Stewart," Skylar greeted, as she glanced around for someplace to sit, catching sight of the small boy she recognized from the music shop over the summer. "May I, Théo?" She asked, taking the seat next to him. He wouldn't mind, surely, because they were music shop buddies, bonded over a mutual love of Quidditch.

It was taking Felicity some time to get used to the word, much preferring the American No-Maj when talking about their none-magic counterparts. It was just right, like calling chips chips was right, not that whole "crisps" nonsense. But, either way, she was dealing with the new words and phrases, and dealing with finding the right classroom in the huge castle. Hearing the music emanating from the room confirmed that her footsteps where heading in the right direction, and she smiled in greeting at the Professor before finding a seat.

Muggle studies was such a fun class, hence why Ava was still taking it.
It was 9.55 AM when she walked to the classroom. Ah, thankfully she wasn't late. The Gryffindor did hear some kind of pop music when she entered it. Well, this would be fun, except that Professor K let the windows opened and the November breeze streamed into the classroom. Merlin. "I hope you have something to warm us up, Professor." She said.
She should've brought her hot chocolate tumbler.

It was too warm for a heavy cloak but it was cold enough that Noelle had brought it with her just in case. It was strapped over her bag as she entered the Muggle Studies classroom and took a look around.
"Goodmorning." Noelle said to anyone within ear shot or looking her way as she headed into the classroom. "Morning Professor" She said settling her things down beside Mel, Shay, and Ava.
The Gryffindor prefect bobbed her head to the music that was playing. She knew that voice... who was it? T. Swift?? Oldie but goodie. Taking her things out, she got ready for class.
Sully wasn't that good at Muggle studies ... but hey she could give it a try!
With a smile she took a seat, but then she heard the music playing. Some of the tunes had a familiar feel to them but others were so beyond her she wasn't sure. But none the less Sully found her self tapping along to the beat. Maybe this class was going to be a good one after all!

“Hello to you too, Ms Sorin- Ward! I have, thank you for asking.
The bouncing second year coming down the corridor made Kay smile broadly. She could never get over how adorable and brilliant Derf was. “Hello, Mr Ashburry- Hawthorne.’’
SPOILER!!: Dora! <3

“Good morning, Ms Umbridge!’’ Dora got a smile as well because well, Kay was always pleased to see all of her students. Speaking of students, they should all be here by now. She was going to get started soon.
SPOILER!!: She who has a thing for Brent ;)

"Hello Professor Stewart," Skylar greeted, as she glanced around for someplace to sit, catching sight of the small boy she recognized from the music shop over the summer. "May I, Théo?" She asked, taking the seat next to him. He wouldn't mind, surely, because they were music shop buddies, bonded over a mutual love of Quidditch.
“You’re just in time, Ms Diggory. Good morning!’’ At least making it on time was better than being late and so no points needed to be docked from Slytherin.

But, either way, she was dealing with the new words and phrases, and dealing with finding the right classroom in the huge castle. Hearing the music emanating from the room confirmed that her footsteps where heading in the right direction, and she smiled in greeting at the Professor before finding a seat.
Ah! Just in time, this one was. Well, there was about five minutes left. Kay smiled in return. "Hello! Go on and grab a seat.''
SPOILER!!: Ava! <3

Kay pretended to give Ava a stern look. "Did you oversleep, Ms Burton?'' Then she broke into a big smile. How could she be mad at anyone much less pretend to be? "You'll just have to wait and see, won't you?''

Noelle was certainly cold or at least that's what Kay thought based on the appearance of that heavy coat. Maybe now would be a good time to lock some of those windows. "Good morning, Ms Summers.''

With a smile she took a seat, but then she heard the music playing. Some of the tunes had a familiar feel to them but others were so beyond her she wasn't sure. But none the less Sully found her self tapping along to the beat. Maybe this class was going to be a good one after all!
The door was about to be closed but then there was a third year heading in the class's direction. "You made it just in time, Ms Sullivan. Come on in.''

Ten o'clock on the dot!
Without waiting for another second (sorry, stragglers!), Kay shut the door to her classroom. She moved to her desk and with a single tap on her laptop’s keypad, she paused the music. “Welcome to yet another Muggle Studies lesson, everyone!’’ She turned to beam at everyone gathered there. “Today we’ll be discussing music as you may have reasoned.’’
The woman traded her position at her desk for one before the white board. She reached for the marker to uncap. “Some of the artistes we heard included Taylor Swift, Beyonce, the Backstreet Boys etcetera. All of these, of course, are muggle singers. There is one thing in common they all have. Other than the fact they are just that- singers- can you tell me what is that element that they share? If it is that you’re not sure, you are more than welcome to make a guess.’’ She resisted the urge to give a clue; might as well let them use their noggins!
And while they got their thinking caps on, she headed to the back of the class to close the windows. The weather didn't affect her and neither did it some like Katy Toussaint but she cared for them all either way. Save for one remained open.
OOC: The lesson has started so pretend your charrie has been here all along! We shall move along, move along in twenty four hours

Skylar hadn't noticed her dormmate enter just behind her? Had she followed her the whole way up from the dorms and Skylar was oblivious? The fourth year felt bad for not waiting for Felicity, but no time for regrets now because Professor Stewart was starting and as was to be expected, the topic of today was music. Ooohhhh!!! Would they be maybe learning to make their own music?!? Because that would be super fun!
Listening as the Professor rattled off the names of the artists who they heard played, Skylar scratched absently at her temple, trying to figure out where she heard those names. They were all muggle artists and ancient too; from like seventy or eighty years ago, so definite classics they all were. She was also ninety percent sure that she recognized the names from her American family, which meant, ...
"Weren't all of them ... American singers?" It would make sense, given they were trying to have that whole cooperation thing with their American sister school, so why wouldn't they learn about American muggles too?

Shay was enjoying the music, tapping her foot along with the beat. She couldn't help it, but music made her want to dance. She refrained from actually doing it though. There was a place and time for everything. Before she knew it, the music was turned down. It was time for class to begin.
They would be learning about music today. Shay was happy about that. What would a dancer be without music? The professor had a question for the class. What did the artists have in common. Shay wasn't sure where the professor was going with this, but she did know one thing that was alike about all of the artists she had heard. She raised her hand and took a stab at answering the question. "I agree. All of them are American." That much Shay did know. Beyond that, she would have to think about it some more.

Dora nodded in return to the greeting she received from the professor. Cool, cool, cool. Fun times. And the music... was all popular music, no? Oldies, too. And perhaps... "It's all popular, mainstream music, Professor, " she said as she stifled a yawn. Maybe she had gotten up earlier than she had realized.
