Muggle Studies Lesson 1- Carry Your Own Key (Activity)!
When you make your way to the Fun Room, you find it surprisingly free of any one. this is because Professor Kay had taken it into stride to post a notice that the Room was out of bounds to anyone but her class at this time. The room was exactly as it was mostly. There were the computers, Ipods, gaming consoles and arcade machines. However, there was another addition. Hooked up to one of the televisions was a certain machine. A microphone accompanied it. Looking closer, you'll see a purple coloured sticky note. It read, "DO NOT TOUCH!''
You may ogle over the machine if you have never seen one like it but be sure to follow what the notes says. Professor Kay will be joining you shortly to explain what today's activity is all about if you haven't figured it out already.
Did he feel like swaying? The second year was not entirely sure but since Abey was doing it he went ahead and swayed along with. TOOOOOOTALLY like it was a choreographed dance or something. Only it wasn't. And they were flying by the seat of their trousers. Maybe him more so than Abey since the Gryffindor was the more seasoned singer between the two of them.
One problem with these lyric machines was the colors they used for duets. Yes, there was a little heart mark for the girl and a diamond mark for the bloke when it was their turns to sing individually, but when you were REALLY getting into things it was hard to pay attention to shapes....and the colors sort of just blended together for Derf. Hence him singing along with and over a part that was meant for just Abey.
"You know the world can s-s-seeeeeeeeeeeeeeee us-s...in a way that different than who we aaAAAre...creatiiiiiiiiiing s-spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace betweEEEEen us-s... 'til we're s-seperate hearts-s....BUT YOUR FAITH IT GIVES-S ME S-STRENGTH...S-S-STRENGTH TO BELIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVE..."
Then again, did it REALLY matter if there was a distinct guy role and girl role while they sang? That didn't seem very like him and Abey, you know? Boxes each other in and limiting each other. So this worked out better anyway.
Getting excited for the SHOUTING part, the Hufflepuff bent at the knees and made a GIANT leap forward to belt out the next few words. All IN key, mind you. Derf surprisingly did know how to carry a tune.
"WE'RE BREAKIN' FREEeeeEEE!"
Abey didn't break his stride even for a second when Derf joined in with his part. Actually, even though he could remember the lyrics to the song, he could only barely recall who sang what part of the duet, so was sort of improvising with this bit himself.
"Creating space bETWEEEEEEEN UUUUUUUS, 'til we're separate hearts..." Oooooh, the best part was coming up. Not yet, but SOOOOON. "BUUUUUT YOUR FAAAAAAAAITH, IT GIIIIIVES ME StREEEEEENGTH... STreeeengTh took belieEEEeeeEEEEVE..."
OH BOY HERE IT COMES. Abey waited until after Derf's big moment and then there was LOTS OF DRAMATIC GESTURES and EYES SQUEEZED SHUT and EMOTIONAL EXPRESSIONS and DRAMATIC FIST CLENCHING.
"We're SOOOOOOOARIIIIING... FLYYYYYING..." Where was Derf? Abey looked towards him and did another dramatic grab-and-pull motion in his direction. "There's not a staAAAAAR in HEEEAAAAVEN that we caaaaan't REEEEEEACH!"
Was it weird to be getting all emotional right about now? Probably, but since when did that stop Abraham Botros Jr.?

Roo had sensed the look coming from his future wife, and his face broke into a wider grin than it had held before. Really, truly...no one understood his absolute love for that girl getting up on stage. Parading his palms together, Rooney gave Liv a round of applause before she had even started before standing up so he could get a proper watch of this and properly give her his undivided attention. He had expected her to go with something Disney related, but...found that her choice was an actual u-turn in comparison.
That wasn't to say it was a bad decision on her part, because holy heck did his Gryffindor girl know just how to put on a show. She really was the ideal person for him. The dramatics, the stage presence and the bundles upon bundles of love.
Hands coming together as she started to sing, Roo shouted his love and adoration because everyone deserved a good crowd to perform to. He'd make enough noise for it to be a WHOLE bunch of people. "THAT'S MY GIRRRRRRRRRRL!!!"
As he prepared to go up on stage himself, inspired by his lady love, Roo blew Olivia a kiss and made a pounding heart gesture with his hands in her direction. "Anyone going up? No..? My turn..?" He supposed that it was and so Rooney strode on up to take the mic, setting the screen up as if it was second nature to him (because it was!) His first choice would have been to go for his current audition song, but he was practicing that twice a day and sometimes it got to a point where he couldn't stand it. That definitely wasn't what he needed from his audition song.
However, he had recently been throwing together another song for post-Hogwarts auditions. Miss Phyllis had said he would need a bunch in case his actual choice wasn't fitting well with the audition personality. Hence why he was going to hammer out an almost polished version of All That Matters from Finding Neverland -- he doubted that his peers would realise that the song was normally sang by a woman, given that the show wasn't that big to the extended world, was it? Olivia would know. She'd been there when he'd chosen this song as his next piece to perfect.
The music began and he only had a few seconds to work himself into the phase that he needed to be in, but it was normal for Rooney and he knew the story inside and out and it was easy to translate into the character that usually sang this song. The Head Boy's voice kicked in soft for a line or two, accepting a slow build to the later notes and delivery. "There are days when I feel so afraid I can hardly remember to breathe.." Not really though, because Rooney had mastered the skill of breathing in sections of songs that allowed it. Defiant as the tone switch, Roo straightened his posture, singing towards the back wall of the room as he would were he on stage and addressing the entire audience with his performance. "So what's the point in planning for a future if it all can be stolen away?"
The first chorus hit confidently with his hand extended out ahead of him, microphone before his face. "And all that matters now is where I go from here..." It was evident that this was nothing that would phase him and that he didn't give a thought to what his classmates would have thought about his choice. "There's an easier way if I live for today... the beating of my heart is all that matters!" Back into the verse and his performance was (you guessed it) directed in the direction of the girl with his ring on her finger, meaning that he had taken that microphone and was walking right through the students towards her. That Olivia Phillips that had agreed to marry him.. And now he was serenading her with the section that she knew was everything he felt about her and their future together.
"She makes sense of all of my chaos in ways I can never explain," he shot her a wink right then. "She turns all of my sadness into a smile, she's helping me live life again!" The Head Boy was before her, hand holding hers as he continued to sing. Sorry to anyone who actually wanted a class without Roolivia love happening. Not really. "It's the light in the eyes of our children, it's the sound of their laughter once more.." You know, Carlton and the children they were one day going to have together. All twenty of them. "It's a glimpse of a life I dared only to dream and a dream only life could restore!"
The transition piece before the big chorus took the Ravenclaw back to the area at the front of the room where he gave another student a twirl on his way through.
Final part. Final belt. Final everything. His favourite part.
"There's an easier way if I live for today, the singing in my heart..."
Get ready for it.
"is all that" The hand without the microphone in it shot up towards the sky, his eyes closed and he went for it. Professionally trained or not, it was obvious that the boy belonged on stage and would probably regret not choosing a university with that as his subject.
"matterrRRRRSS!!!!"
Rooney took a bow, placed the microphone back on the stand and hopped down to take his seat once more. The students of Hogwarts were honestly welcome.

This was going to be mortifying and well, there was nothing more than she wanted than to have this mortifying experience with her best friend, which meant ... duet.
"Hattie. You're singing with me." There were no options here. Listening to her peers have their turn, she waited, trying to think of something good for them to sing. "Hmm, what about, For the first time in forever? It's a sister song ..." And they were kind of like sisters. Unless she had a better idea, but disney songs were always a good crowd pleaser.
Oh. She was going to be singing? Thanks for that Sky. Though Hattie didn't really mind. She liked singing, even if she wasn't that good at it. One couldn't be the best at everything. Oh. A disney song? Now she liked that. Hattie was a big disney fan, so she did not mind that at all. "Sounds like an idea. Sister" Because Sky was her sister, even if they weren't related. So it was very suitable song indeed.
Andd it was there turn. "I'll be Anna. You can be Elsa" Because that meant that she would go first, and well that was best. She got up to the front, and beamed. She didn't really need the words. She knew them. But it would be okay. Just in case she did forget.
The beat kicked in, and Hattie began singing, with a little swaying going along. She couldn't not dance along to a disney song. "The window is open, so's that door. I didn't know they did that anymore. Who knew we owned eight thousand salad plates?" Hattie sang, getting into it. Yep. She did like this song.
Dance. Sing. Sing Sing.
It was going good. And it was nearly Sky's turn! She better be ready! Andd she was singing her final bit "But for the first time in forever. At least I've got a chance"
And now it was Sky's turn. Go Sky!

Skylar grinned when Hattie agreed about that particular Disney song. Except, what was that that Hattie got to be Anna?? Was that supposed to be some kind of symbolism because Hattie was the Hufflepuff, which meant warm hugs and optimistic personality? That she, Skylar, had a frozen heart? Ah well, she didn't mind too much because MOST of the song was actually Anna singing, which meant less singing for her.
And it was their turn now.
Swaying a little as Hattie!Anna sang her bit, she was mentally calculating until her bit. And she was up, with right on sync, she began,
"Don't let them in
Don't let them see
Be the good girl
You always have to be
Conceal
Don't feel
Put on a show
Make one wrong move
And everyone will know
But it's only for today
{Hattie}
It's agony to wait
{Hattie}
Tell the guards to open up the gate!
{Hattie}
Don't let them in, don't let them see
{Hattie}
Be the good girl you always have to be
{Hattie}
Conceal"
Yay for alternating slash copying lines, next. Which she did, pausing in between in each line for Hattie's bit.
ooc note: parts where I wrote Hattie, is Hattie speaking in between, but figured it was easier to do it this way then to write one-liners back and forth lol ...

"You'll pick up the tune in a second, and then feel free to be as loud as you want." The louder the better. "I come home in the morning light/ My mother says when you gonna live your life right/ Oh mother dear we're not the fortunate ones/ And girls they want to have fun/ Oh girls just want to have fun." She bounced and swished her hips and perhaps had just the slightest bit more fun than she wanted to acknowledge.

Wanting to catch the tune for real, Jessa let the Slytherin have the first verse, listening to make sure she wouldn't mess up.
Pretty soon it was the next verse and Jessa was pumped to say the least. While Katy had been singing, the girl had remained relatively stagnant but now that she was ready to jump in, she was moving around a little. It was rocking at first, but then by the time her lips parted, she'd fallen in some sort of sync with Katy's movements.
"The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life
Oh daddy dear you know you're still number one,"
Much like Katy suggested, Jessa did bounce around a whole lot, finding it easier to just go with the beat and let it all happen.
"But girls they wanna have fun
Oh girls just want to have."

Professor Stewart sang the Script. She clapped at the end of all of them.
And then it was her turn. Taking a deep breath, she slowly combed her hair bangs down over her forehead and walked up to the microphone. You can rock this, she thought nervously and excitedly as she got closer and closer. "I can sing Last of the American Girls best," she said quietly with a nervous smile to Professor Stewart so that the song could change.
The familiar beats began. Swallwing once, Kitty let loose:
"She puts her makeup on
Like graffiti on the walls of the heartland
She's got her little book of conspiracies right in her hand
She is a paranoid endangered species headed into extinction
She is one of a kind
She's the last of the American Girls!

She's a runaway of the establishment incorporated

She plays her vinyl records singing songs on the eve of destruction
She's a sucker for all the criminals breaking the laws
She will come in first for the end of western civilization
She's an endless war, she's a hero for the lost cause
Like a hurricane in the heart of the devastation
She's a natural disaster

She had her eyes closed the entire time she sang, except at the end where she threw her arms up dramatically and shouted, "She's the Last of The American Girls!"
Whew!

Casual talking. This song was more conversational so she thought it would work better for Etta as her friend seemed very nervous and conversational songs were easier to go for. Not too much belting.
Glancing out to the audience, she took her fear and pushed it away in a single breath and began singing, "Head under water, and they tell me to breathe easy for a while. The breathing gets harder, even I know that." She let go of her grip on her microphone, easing up as she felt the song, putting emphasis on the important words so that she could construct the story. "You made room for me but it's too soon to see. If I'm happy in your hands. I'm unusually hard to hold on to." Olivia quickly stole a glance at Etta. Was her friend doing okay? She hoped so. Then back to the audience, she lifted her volume just higher and smiled softly, and then began acting to the song, really getting into the song. "Blank stares at blank pages. No easy way to say this. You mean well, but you make this hard on me...."
Alright, now they just had to sing together. She looked over to Etta, ready to help cue her friend if she needed it. They could do this! This wasn't so bad. Olivia was just ignoring her shaking knees.

Olivia had decided on a song. It was hard for her to choose as there were so many that she wanted to do, but in the end...it was always going to be Taylor Swift. Dated, but many of her songs had been on Liv's personal playlist since the incident; none more important than Clean.
You're still all over me like a wine stained dress I can't wear, anymore.
...No, that wasn't the song she'd be singing today. It was DEFINITELY too personal and there would be tears, as there often were. But...it was another from that same album, 1989. And fitting as she'd been saying for ages she felt completely New Romantics lately. Everything was culminating to that point...
But yes, New Romantics.
Pulling herself up from the couch in a way that would've made Miss Jordan Baker proud, the blonde shook out her limbs and proceeded to the front of the room. The mic awaited her, as the person who'd been singing completed their song. Everyone had been doing a great job, and Liv could respect anyone who had a go at it. Performing in front of intimate audiences was more terrifying then arenas, and worse still, performing in front of your schoolmates. It took a lot of guts to put one's self out there. Especially when it wasn't something you were used to doing. As she and Rooney were. They'd been in the spotlights their entire lives. As an afterthought, she cast a warm look in his direction. Hopefully he'd enjoy the performance, and if not... Well, she'd be sad, but would try to act all cool about it.
Hm, anyway, Olivia worked with Professor Stewart to get the music queued up and waited patiently for the beat to begin. She'd already shrugged out of her school robe for functionality reasons. It was hard to do anything when you were in large, clunky materials. It wasn't the best fabric for putting on a show.... Oh, the music!
Smexy!mysterious!performance pose. Everyone needed a cool starting point. So, clutching the mic in her hand, Liv emulated Taylor. "We're all bored..... We're all so tired of everything. We wait for...trains that just aren't coming... We show off...our different scarlet letters." She paused to take a small breath, having pranced and danced her way through the first couple of lines... "Trust me, mine is better." Accurate lyric. Yes, thank you. Injecting some attitude, the blonde schmoozed her way around the room, not needed to see the lyrics on a screen to know them by heart. Every word. Every melody. "We're so young... but we're on the road to ruin. We play dumb, but we know exactly what we're doing. We cry tears...of mascara in the bathroom. Honey, life is just a classroom..." Oh, buddy. HEAR these lyrics. Hear them, feel them, understand them... CHORUS!
Apparently, Olivia we doing this in bare-feet, and had kicked her shoes off at some point, beginning to bounce through the lyrics. There was a reason this song was one of her favorites. One of her most treasured. Every lyrics applied to her life currently, and it was probably obvious in the way she was performing this song. As if she'd written it. That was the trick, really. When you tried to perform someone else's music, you had to make it your own. Liv hoped she was accomplishing that. Paying special attention to the lyric "Everyday is like a battle....but every night with us is like a dream...", she cut her eyes at Rooney, before re-centering herself to the beat.
"The lights and boys are blinding (at Hogwarts). We hang back, but it's all in good timing. It's poker.. He can't see it in my face...but I'm about to play my ACE!" Amused she grinned at Ace, because hey, hi, hello, but then quickly shifted her gaze back to Roo. Relevance."We need love... but all we want is danger. We team up, then switch sides like a record changer." Such was the way of teenage life here at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry..."The rumors....are terrible and cruel, but honey most of them are true..."Mm.
Performing her little heart out to another round of the chorus, where she implemented bum wiggles, graceful arm sweeps, and smizing... the Gryffindor finally took a seat and crossed her legs, her posture nothing short of dramatic and staged. Slowing it doooown for the bridge. "Please take...my hand....and please take me dancing....and please leave me stranded..... It's so romantic." At this last word, she fake swooned through the prolonged beat; her hand brushing across her forehead in a very Scarlet O'Hare way.
It lasted only a moment, before she was up, bouncing through the remaining lyrics, hands swaying high in the air...in the attempts to get her peers involved in her fun. She was at home on stage. Always had been, but only recently had it started to scare her. Not during this song, of course. This was a safe space, with her Rooney nearby. But it was all the same.
Finally finished, Olivia bowed low and bent down to collect her shoes and robe before going to crash on the couch again. She'd done her civic duty. Carry on, carry on.

She could sing ok, but she didn't feel that she had a particularly great voice. Anyway, karaoke was about having fun, not being a great singer. If there was one thing she was good at, it was performing........so she would give the class a show.
When her turn came, Shay went up to the karaoke machine and made her selection. It was an oldie, but goodie........a karaoke anthem. She couldn't resist it. "This one is for the ladies." Turning her back to the crowd, she released her voluminous hair from its ponytail. When the first strains of the music began, she turned dramatically with a big hair flip and began to sing.
"At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong
And I learned how to get along
And so you're back from outer space
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed that stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second you'd be back to bother me.
Go on now go, walk out the door
Just turn around now
'Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye?
Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no not I!
I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love , I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give I'll survive, I will survive
Hey hey"
And with that, Shay was done. She had gotten a little carried away as she'd gotten into the meat of the song, but she was done now. Back to reality and exit stage right.

Go Sky!

Ah well, she didn't mind too much because MOST of the song was actually Anna singing, which meant less singing for her.
And it was their turn now.
Swaying a little as Hattie!Anna sang her bit, she was mentally calculating until her bit. And she was up, with right on sync, she began,
"Don't let them in
Don't let them see
Be the good girl
You always have to be
Conceal
Don't feel
Put on a show
Make one wrong move
And everyone will know
But it's only for today
{Hattie}
It's agony to wait
{Hattie}
Tell the guards to open up the gate!
{Hattie}
Don't let them in, don't let them see
{Hattie}
Be the good girl you always have to be
{Hattie}
Conceal"
Yay for alternating slash copying lines, next. Which she did, pausing in between in each line for Hattie's bit.
ooc note: parts where I wrote Hattie, is Hattie speaking in between, but figured it was easier to do it this way then to write one-liners back and forth lol ...
More applause from Kay for each student and group!
CLAPCLAPCLAP!
Honestly, the kiddos never ceased to amaze her. If there had been a singing competition, she’d be the very last person anyone should choose to judge because she’d be so biased when it involved her students. She stood up, looking warmly around at all of them. “Great job! Thank you so much for taking part in today’s lesson, everyone. It was a wonderful experience to listen to you all. For those of you who chose not to sing, that’s alright. I hope you the next time any such situation arises, you take part.’’ She saw no point in forcing them to sing but at least they were able to enjoy their peers’ voices.
“Unfortunately today’s lesson has come to an end since time has ran out. The machine will be left here for those of you wishing to use it. If you want to borrow it to take it elsewhere, say somewhere on the grounds, you will need my permission first. With that, class is dismissed.’’
OOC: That’s a wrap, guys! Thanks for playing! I’ll leave the thread open for a few hours if you want to post your charries leaving/ finishing up
