How the tables kept turning. It didn't seem Jessa would be faced against anyone in her own year at this rate. First Abey a year below her and now she was faced with an older student, Skylar, the one who said kissing was relaxing. Jessa had meant to ask if she had any studies or results to back up such a conclusion but she'd been awfully distracted that day and the time had simply slipped away. Now they were face to face for a duel and she couldn't tell if this was some form of irony or karma.
Either way, Jessa bowed like she was meant to then turned and counted out the required amount of steps while thinking up a spell she could send at the Slytherin.
Perhaps something of a distraction while she tried to think out her next move. The thing with duels was...there was always so much to take in. So much to analyze and SO MANY QUESTIONS to be answered once they started. The Ravenclaw could hardly keep up!
The only thing that came to mind? The cracker jinx. If she could get it bright enough, maybe it'd throw her off. At the very least it might give her pause which was what the 14 year old needed. Duels made her kinda jittery. She was never as prepared as she thought she was.
Oh! She'd almost forgotten. In that same breath, Jessa cast a quick featherlight charm on herself, like she and Abey had done during the last duel BECAUSE THAT WAS PROBABLY WHAT WAS ALWAYS MEANT TO HAPPEN and she didn't wanna seem like she didn't know what she was doing.

Since her first duel with Hattie, Skylar had been feeling kind of down and it had nothing to do with the fact that she lost. But more she was struck with how lucky her best friend seemed to be able avoid EVERYSINGLESPELL. No matter the angle. Had she missed her friend attending extra lessons? Honestly, she had no idea but somehow it felt like Hogwarts was going all wrong. It was supposed to bring her closer to those she already was close with and yet, it felt the older she got, despite deep in her heart knowing she would always be best friends with Hattie, it felt like maybe they were simultaneously breaking up. Like who even was Harriet Paton? Skylar used to know, but now ... she couldn't be sure.
Just like she couldn't be sure where all the fourth years were, as it seemed like herself, Junia and Hattie were the only ones partaking and after that she would duel a third year. This time, it was Jessa Cambridge, an interesting Ravenclaw who seemed very ... inquisitive, but then again, most Ravenclaws were. She was going to have to have twist Felicity and Vivian's arms into signing up next year. Maybe Kirk too, except she'd only really ever talked to him on the train and hadn't really run into him much elsewhere.
Following Jessa's suit with a bow of her own, she kept a calculated but distracted gaze on her opponent, to which she jumped off to the side to avoid the explosions out of impulse and reflexes. What was wrong with her? Why did she feel so off-point this term when it came to dueling? It was only her second term dueling, but maybe last term she just had some beginner's luck. Or maybe it was the gnawing feeling of growing distanced from one's best friend.
As she'd done previously though, she did manage to remember to cast a featherlight charm on herself, because it felt helpful before. Ugh, she wished she was more focused right now, to better concentrate on some offensive spells. But yet, the most she could think of was, "Aqua Eructo" the jet of water at least carefully conjured toward the third year.

There was a good reason Jessa had never joined the dueling club until this year. One of the bigger ones being the fact she knew very well how difficult a time she would have NOT analyzing everything and trying to figure out how everything worked.
Take for instance, right now. Sure, Skylar had jumped out of the way of her sparks and she DID have that extra second she'd needed to think up another effective but harmless spell--because she didn't wanna HURT anyone, y'know? Least of all when she wouldn't be able to run tests on 'em afterwards to determine the long term effects AND improve her healing magic. Couldn't see Healer Reed appreciating that. Couldn't see Hirsch being keen on her excitement to study the injuries she caused either. The POINT WAS, while she should have been thinking up a spell, she was busy wondering what having aqua eructo cast at you would feel like. It was no aguamenti afterall.
The impulse to find out was stronger than the impulse to shield herself, leaving the 14 year old standing where she was, ready to make assessments as they came along.
First assessment, it stung. Jets of water forced from a wand ACTUALLY hurt and nudged her back a few feet without her really knowing HOW. Merlin, it was interesting to say the least. There were several comparisons she could have drawn, but she may have needed to ask Skylar to cast it again at another time--conclusions couldn't be made based on one test.
Thoroughly soaked and a little sore from the sudden onslaught, Jessa did the only practical thing she could think of, she cast an anti-jinx spell on herself to give herself a better chance at this metaphoric survival. She turned her wand next to her opponent, uttering the first thing to come to mind. "Expelliarmus!"

If Skylar had been in a right frame of mind, she'd already have calculated what her next mode of jinxes and hexes might have been. She'd have pre-planned it all out, calculating step-by-step what she might predict her opponent to do and what she would do and how she would defend herself. But fortunately for Jessa, she wasn't focused. She was completely off kilter and the fact that her wand flung from her hand was enough proof of that. She should have been ready. She should have cast a shield charm, but she just wasn't thinking at all and really if she'd been thinking straight, she probably should have even told Hirsch she couldn't duel this round.
Everyone had their off days though, didn't they? Swiftly picking up her wand where it had flung just a foot away, but simultaneously keep Jessa in periphery, Sky considered her options.
It did give her some satisfaction though seeing Jessa soaked which meant her spell had worked. But an anti-jinx spell that she heard the third year cast meant what? She couldn't cast jinxes? But hexes or charms would probably still be effective, wouldn't they? And now that Jessa was soaked, time to make her cold? "Ventus!" Followed by a signature "Glacius" because combined with the water that was already on Jessa, well, it could be a win? Maybe? Although she'd only ever really used it on the floor to make her opponent slip, but it just seemed like a given to attempt it on someone wet because liquid would freeze easily?

It actually worked? To say she was surprised at having disarmed her opponent, even only temporarily, would have been an understatement. Yes, she was aware that was what the spell did in theory but she found practical application to be an entirely different thing because of all the variations that could arise--the most common being that Skylar could have simply blocked it.
It begged the question of WHY she didn't...along with a little niggling feeling that she may have liked to know what it was like to be disarmed as well.
Was it like a shock or was it more like your wand trying to pry itself out of you hands? Curious. The Ravenclaw was so preoccupied with this train of thought that she didn't notice the older girl reclaim her wand and take aim at her. All she knew was that it was suddenly quite windy in the dueling arena and that she was being nudged right across the dueling mat. Merlin's beard that was some strong stuff!
It took everything for Jessa to regain her footing but it finally came when the spell ended to give rise to another. Were she still wet, she WOULD have let this spell hit her but that ventus just now knocked the water right off her and got her mostly dry, making it an unfruitful experiment at being frozen at best. Consequently, the young girl cast a shield, "Protego!" It was the first thing on her mind and the only thing she could think to do in the moment while her head stopped turning at all that wind blown at her just now.
She was a bit dizzy if nothing else.

The wind spell took effect as it should, but Jessa strategically shielded herself against being frozen, which actually kind of disappointed Skylar. Perhaps glacius wasn't going to be her signature dueling charm as she hoped it would be? She needed something more, something unpredictable.
Speaking of unpredictable, the fourth year waited for another offensive spell to be thrown at her, but nothing? Surely she wasn't adept with non-verbals at this point in her magical education? But there was definitely nothing .... which the nothing, worried Skylar more than being disarmed a moment ago. Unless, she was still taken aback from the wind? Hit her while she's down, a voice mentally told her, scolding her for lingering so long, waiting.
"Muffliato," she said quickly, following it with a "Slugulus Eructo"

Hirsch wasn't sure what was going on here. Sure, the duel was going ahead as normal but there seemed to be a lack of...... defence. Or was it motivation? Or did they both just want to be hit with spells? He really had no idea but one thing he did know was that something seemed........ off.
Or was he looking too much into this?
The man shook his head and concentrated on the duel again. There was still a great display of spellwork so really, he had nothing to worry about, did he? He tried to push the thought out of his mind and looked between each of the girls as the spells were cast. Was it just him or did Miss Diggory have an affinity for water-based spells? This didn't have anything to do with her house, did it? He had questions.
........ Which were going to be saved for later because, as his watch told him, the duel needed to come to a close.
Hirsch struck up a shield between the two duellers, saving Jessa from being hit with not one, but two spells. You're welcome. "That was some duel, I have to say. Well done to both of you!" he said, making his way towards them, "That was also a very close duel but, Miss Diggory, you've taken the lead today. Congratulations! And well done on putting up a great fight, Jessa."
Pause. "Do you need a heating charm placed on you?" Because water and wind wasn't a good combination.
