This all seemed so official and professional. It might actually be pretty cool.

"Hey, Henry." The Prefect's words were easy enough to make out, and his smile was evident as well, thanks to the way his cheeks turned up. But Nicky didn't need to be able to see and hear behind the boy's mask to know he was being friendly; Henry always was. He was in good company.

And thank Merlin for that, because he'd need it during... whatever this was. Plant surgery? Not the fifth year's strong suit.

Poking a hole near the carrot-like root's bottom, Nicky began moving his scalpel upward. Was this like cutting vegetables? As Althea Kenning knew, he was quite awful at that. The instrument left a slightly uneven cut when he'd finished, but it was good enough for him.

Curiously, he glanced over at Henry's workstation to see if his mate was faring any better.

This was a weird lesson.

Sam sat her table that she had chosen specifically because it was far from other people. Unfortunately being far enough way meant that this table had the perfect view of the other. She sat at her work station arranging her items that didn't need to be arranged while trying to ignore the her classmates, and listen to the professor. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes at things, and focused more on what Professor Myers was saying.

Straightening she picked up her wand, and looked back up at the image. Just a straight cut on the belly of the plant, yeah, she could do that. Carefully, she cast diffindo, tracing a line down the length of the thing. Good thing she wasn't trying to use a scalpel, she'd hate trying to chop into this thing with that.

Looking down at the thing, she raised her hand. “Professor, are you sure its more like a carrot? I think it looks more like a potato.” Brown, wrinkly, with a face, yeah, more like a potato. “or maybe ginger?”

Watson 06-26-2017 12:25 AM

Dissection time... Here they go. When she heard the option of using a spell to dissect the mandrake, she happily opted for that because using a scalpel probably would end badly for someone as clumsy as Olivia. Sharp things were... dangerous. Anyway to the dissection!

She turned her gaze towards the mandrake and then looked at the plant/creature. It looked somewhat like a human but... It was a plant. The first incision was made vertically across the "stomach" of the mandrake. With her wand, she pointed at the mandrake and cast diffindo, following the line that was shown in the figure.

As to Professor Myer's question about whether or not the mandrake resembled a carrot, Olivia had no clue. "Are they apart of the same root family?" she offered. Now that Sam mentioned that the mandrake looked like a ginger, she could see it now... Hmm...

Lady of Light 06-26-2017 02:44 AM

Like her friend, Etta decided to go for the spell as well. She didn't want to have to actually use a scalpel.. those things were scary and she preferred magic, anyway. It was less messier or so she liked to think. She stared at the diagram shown, her stomach doing a small flip. It was worrying, okay? What if she couldn't follow the line? Her eyes turned towards the creature, trying not to panic. It was a little weird how often she panicked these days.. she mentally tried to push away those thoughts, especially when she had to concentrate and be precise. At least, the smell wasn't distracting her anymore.

The girl pulled out her wand, took a deep breath and still stared at the plant-- well, creature. Making sure she studied the drawing properly, the girl cast a diffindo, trying to follow the line that was shown in the diagram.. and she ended up doing a pretty decent job. Well, this part was over. Phew. Looking away from the plant, she focused on answering the professor's question.

"They probably belong to the same plant family, maybe?"

Holmesian Feline 06-26-2017 03:49 AM

Odd was definitely to say the least about mandrakes. Cassie had always been just a touch weirded out by the human shape of the plant and cutting into one of the dead plants was going to feel…awkward for sure. But she’d just have to do it or feel even more awkward when everyone else around her could handle it with no problem. The Ravenclaw was done feeling like a failure. She had taken a mask though, figuring there was no harm taking he assistance that the professor had felt necessary to offer. And when people around her began their cutting shortly before she could, she was grateful for it, the mask now clearly over her face.

Now to begin…

“Diffindo,” she cast, making the first cut as directed by the diagram down the middle of the root. It wasn’t squishy as the humanoid appearance might led one to believe which made things better. And Cass had to admit she could agree with Myer’s comparison, having cut a fair share of carrots while helping her parents prepare dinner at home. “Because it’s from the same plant family, or at least shares the plant DNA of a taproot.”

Govoni 06-26-2017 04:14 AM

Bending down to remove her gloves from her school bag, Olivia carefully slipped them on; grimacing at the sweet smell that continued to permeate through the mask. It was overwhelming, kinda giving her a headache...but it wasn't too much for her to handle. Besides, she figured it was leagues better than what she would smell once she cut into this mandrake. No, Liv had never done this, but...Well, she was assuming the sweet smell was better than the rotten, sour one... Earthy and vibrant life.

Hm.

So...like a carrot, because of the vegetation that grew from the top of it, right? Like...... "For nutrients? Like photosynthesis." Nah, she had zero clue, but it seemed right? Otherwise how did it grow? Look, she realized she loved potatoes more than was normal for any one person, but she was floored at how they actually grew without vines and greenery. Mind. Blown. "I mean, I assume most things need sunlight, even if they're in this greenhouse." Not her most intellectual answer, sure, but the smell was clouding the blondes mind.

Uh, maybe she'd need to continue without a mask for the remainder of this lesson... But first, Olivia prepared her scalpel, hovering it over the top space she was meant to start cutting. From top to bottom would be best, yeah? To be honest, when preparing potions ingredients, she liked to cut diagonally... alas. Steadying her hand, she carefully punctured the mandrake, raking the blade downward to create the incision..... Sorry, she'd been spending a lot to time in the infirmary, so her descriptors may have seemed more clinical in nature.

sweetpinkpixie 06-26-2017 05:36 AM

Sorry, professor, BUT CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE SIZE OF THESE EARMUFFS!

But he was here which clearly meant that he was capable of handling class, right? Right. Probably. He had his trust earmuffs and wand so he was probably okay.

Settling into his station, Derf now wished that he had learned how to read lips so he could make a better guess as to what Dark Lord Myers was saying. Because right now he was guessing and it was coming out like a bad lip reading and making the Hufflepuff giggle LOUDLY and boyishly. He was too busy giggling to reeeeeally catch what was going on, but he did see people picking up scalpels so he reached for his too and clutched in his hand. The diagram that appeared next made things kinda obvious what he was supposed to do.

Holding the scalpel TIGHTLY, he tried to be as careful as possible with the incision...but rather than a straight line it was sorta...curved. Like a melted 'C' shape...and the blade kinda slipped too so he had to make a second one to finish the cut...so REALLY...it looked more like a melted V shape he supposed. If you squinted and turned your head sideways and stuff.

As for the question, well, he didn't hear it at ALL. But carrot was certainly not something he associated when looking at a mandrake. He actually LIKED carrots. And they were orange. Mandrakes weren't orange and he didn't like them so no. No carrot association here.

NifflerFan 06-26-2017 06:09 AM

Resembled a carrot. Uh huh, right. It didn't look like a carrot to her, it looked like a mini person-plant hybrid. Emmeline shot the Dark professor skeptical, suspicious looks as covertly as possible. She was also NOT impressed by his shouting at Derf right at their table; couldn't he have waited five seconds for Derf to remove the earmuffs? Not that her friend showed any sign of doing so, even when Jessa tried to take them off his head. The first year was briefly distracted from her brooding on the professor as she shot Isa a smile and a wave. Better late than never to greet a friend, right? She'd meant to when Isa first came in, but there were so many distractions today.

The Gryffindor grinned as she watched Jessa cutting into her mandrake with what she thought was enthusiasm. She peered at the other girl's plant after the incision had been made, but she totally couldn't tell if it had human organs inside it or not. She really hoped the mandrakes did NOT look like humans on the inside, but there was no telling what horrible sights might be met with a Dark wizard teaching.

Emmeline picked up her scalpel carefully; she kind of wanted to use a spell but she wasn't so great at that cutting one that the professor had mentioned. The last time she'd tried to use it, she'd cut way into the wrong tree in Ancient Runes, which had been kind of embarrassing. The scalpel was much safer, or at least Emmeline thought it would be better until she held it against the mandrake and hesitated. What if it really felt all squishy and stuff like cutting a human? She didn't really know how it felt to cut a human, of course, but she imagined lots of blood and squishy-ness was involved.

Derf had gotten through his alright, though, and his cut was much cooler than the professor's diagram. She flashed him a small smile and a thumb's up, because he still had earmuffs on and everything. So the mandrake must've been okay so far.

Taking a deep breath, Emmeline pressed down with her scalpel and started trying to copy the diagram's incision. She was surprised at how easily the scalpel was able to cut into the thing, and super relieved to find that it really did feel just like cutting a vegetable. She breathed a little sigh of relief and promptly swiped down the rest of the mandrake from the small cut she'd started with -- or she tried to go straight down anyway. Unfortunately, her hand kind of slipped at one point so her incision was more like a lightning bolt than a straight line. She supposed it would have to do.

As for the question, she raised her hand and offered tentatively: "Is it 'cause mandrakes and carrots are both roots?" At least she thought that carrots were roots. She wasn't sure, and she hadn't really listened to all that talking the professor had done before the cutting part had started. Oops.

thekraken 06-26-2017 07:12 AM

Althea was terribly confused (Herbology had a tendency to do that to her,) but she tried to follow along as best as she could. Professor Myers was already moving on and talking (a lot) about mandrakes and how they're planty and whatnot. Resisting the urge to roll her eyes, Althea searched through her bag for her gloves (as quietly as possible.) Once found, she tugged them on and then refocused on what Myers was saying.

Her eyes glanced over at the image of the mandrake and then back down to the scalpel in front of her. She wasn't squeamish, not really, so dissecting wouldn't be an issue. Staying awake, however, would. Myers was drinking a lot of water and Althea wondered if it was nerves or if he'd finally become one with the plants and needed a steady dose of water to keep moving. Far-fetched but he was a very strange professor, so she really couldn't toss that theory out.

Even though the smell still penetrated, she was thankful for the mask. Picking up her scalpel, Althea did her best to cut into the mandrake just like Myers instructed. Huh. It really did cut easily. It was all very strange.

His question went way over her head, as she didn't know too much about plant properties outside of their general uses. Still, she raised her hand in an attempt to give an answer. "Is it because of how they grow? Like, the way their roots grow, I mean."

Kimothy 06-26-2017 01:57 PM

So, they were... going to dissect already? Whoaaa, whoa. Too quick. But well, Vivian decided it was best to get it done with. Debating with herself on whether or not she was going to use the scalpel, Vivian shrugged and took her wand. She could use non-magical stuff at home, so she was definitely taking advantage of being able to use magic. Besides, she had been practicing on her weak points in Charms, so the Slytherin was quite confident she wouldn't get this wrong.

Hmm... so, it looked like they were supposed to cut through the stomach? Was it even a stomach? And it looked human so... it probably was. But it was a plant, too, and they didn't have stomachs! Vivian's brain was processing and debating on too many things. Pushing her thoughts away, she looked at the picture and then down at her mandrake. It was dead, but she felt a little bad. "M'sorry." It probably wouldn't hurt. The blonde then made her first incision with a "Diffindo!" following the line that was presented.

Not bad, eh?

Oh, and... what did they have in common with carrots? It never really crossed her mind, because the mandrake looked too human to even pass for a carrot... so this was a little funny for her. But she raised her hand to share. "They have the leaves thingy coming out of their heads, and they grow under the ground." Obviously. Vivian doubted the edible part of it, though. Mandrakes did NOT look enticing enough. Sorry.

Usually lessons were rather monotonous in the way they followed the textbook, but the opportunity to do something as cool as dissect a MANDRAKE, even if it was kind of like a plant baby, was definitely appealing.

Inspecting the tray of supplies at workstation, she decided she would use the scalpel, because even though she was competent with diffindo, she was afraid she wouldn't be able to control it enough and end up slicing the whole thing in half instead of the mere incisions. A scalpel would definitely allow her greater control. When indicated, she carefully took her scalpel and made the small incision as Professor Myers indicated, and then posed with them a question about why it resembled a carrot.

"Well, I'd have to say, it maybe has to do with something about both mandrakes and carrots growing in the ground? Maybe the soil gives it something to do with the texture?" Was she close? Completely off?

And now was a good time to put on that mask before the stenches got too bad.

Carrots and mandrakes did both grow in the ground. “Soil...typically doesn’t affect texture like that,” he replied gently. Merlin, maybe this question was harder than he had originally thought.

“But they DO both grow in the ground because they’re the roots and all.” As some of the students mentioned.

Yes she was thrilled he'd decided to listen to her and attend his lesson given the alternative would have been levitating him over here but Merlin's beard she didn't expect him to come with earmuffs clapped over his ears like that.

As he got to the spot next to her, amidst the shouts of the Professor, Jessa plucked them from his ears and lowered them to the table. She wouldn't shout like Myers was doing. They're dead." The Professor had given the long explanation, she was simply recapping in case he missed any of it. "They're long dead. We're cutting them open now."

Blue eyes fell to Emmeline as she joined them and a wide grin spread across her face. "Hi!" WAS SHE EXCITED ABOUT THIS LESSON TOO???????????

Oh Merlin the Professor said they could start cutting!

She so had this. Opting to, in the long run, better her spells when it came to experiments, Jessa choice her wand over the scalpel, simply because she would need to get the hang of having precision with her magic. Of course, she was listening as the Professor spoke, finding she could multi-task with this fairly easily. The young girl had been cutting rats and other things open for over a year now, making an incision on a plant was child's play.

"Is it because they all share the same plant family?" And he was right, pretty much like cutting into a carrot, which was actually much easier than a rat.

“They are actually in different families. Mandrakes are in the family Solanaceae, while carrots are Apiaceae, two terms you will literally never need to know in any of my classes or exams,” he said simply. That was...way way deep into plant stuff, plant bio and whatnot, and for Herbology lessons at Hogwarts, that was way too in depth. But he thought he’d mention them anyway. “But you’re smart thinking, Jessa!”

He had a lot of important things to say.

Text Cut: Class Notes
Mandrakes ARE humanoid in appearance--we all know it, you all can SEE it. However...once we begin cutting, you’ll very quickly notice just how planty they are. Now, the mandrake plant is, indeed, a root, and if we want to have to be more specific, a branched root. As you can see, the humanoid part is the root, and there are little twiggy branches coming off its ends. Mandrakes most resemble a carrot in how they look about texture, as well as how they take in nutrients from the sun and from dirt and water.

Vivienne was ready to start. She took out her wand.

She looked at where she was to make the first incision.

She noticed as she cut it that it cut like a carrot! What was the bloody hell going on?
Then the professor waited to move on? Why? She took her wand straight up to make the incision. She waited for the others to be at the same spot. She wished to use diffindo. It was less bloody and messy. She hated surgery.

She had no idea why a mandrake resembled a carrot. At all.

A quiet one! Paul didn’t mind the quiet, since she seemed to be intently cutting the mandrake open. Well, concentration and focus was important.

.... good thing the Herbologist had those BIG images with the incision line running across the right way. So riiiight down the center eh? And before he can even open his mouth, his wand was already starting to diffindo the scraggly skin open....Isnt it great how his wand is wired to his brain like that?

Oh and as for the question "Uhm... they're both root crops Professor?"

“Well, you’re right. They are both roots, so yes, that is a similarity.” Well, at least the students were on the right track. And that was….good enough for Paul. Made him smile and whatnot.

And dude. Zoryn did TRY to humor Professor M as he chittered on a bit, but MAN he had SO many words. So she didn’t pay much attention… Until the last part when they were supposed to hold the scalpels. Dude. She wanted to cut it up her OWN way. But she followed instructions like a good student because it was too early on in the lesson to cause a scene. Ahem.

And if Zoryn had to take a guess, she’d say they cut the same cause they’re both plants. But the Ravenclaw girl sort of said that. So eh.

She’d focus on getting the cut right. Aaaaaaaand OOOOOOOH it really was like a carrot!!!! ”Do they taste like carrots too?????" Were they EDIBLE? Zoryn NEEDED to know.

…...Paul had to chuckle. Good naturedly, of course. “Zoryn….yes, they are edible. But not in this state. Highly poisonous if you ingest uncooked. And the only reason one should ever ingest a mandrake is if they’re taking a draught of some sort.” He was sure most were familiar with the potion that restored a person’s state after petrification?

They were starting the dissection process.

Taking her wand in her hand she got ready to cut the skin of the mandrake root open only to pause. Wait…it cut like a carrot? Looking over to Tenacius as he answered the question Mel jut gave him a small smile. That was a smart idea…carrots and mandrakes were root vegetables.

Ponchos! Paul had no idea why she was mentioning them, but he laughed. “Yes, ponchos are just great. Nice and airy...and...comfortable. Also warm if you want them to be.” He winked. PONCHOS MAN.

At least the mandrakes weren't actually capable of killing people anymore. Maybe knowing that they were dead would make things more manageable for Derf. Isa was, as always, excited about the herbology lesson. Although Isa was generally against killing or cutting plants, she was okay with dissecting a mandrake that was already dead. This was to further her knowledge about plants, and she didn't have to kill any plants to learn so it was okay. Isa had decided not to wear a mask because the smell wasn't bothering her too much yet, and she was sensitive to most perfumes so having a mask with perfume in it right by her nose for a long time would probably be worse than the smell of the room.

They were starting! Isa looked up at the poster showing where to make the incision and watched Professor Myers' demonstration. Picking up her scalpel,
Isa made one long incision from the bottom of the mandrake up to the top just like Professor Myers had shown them. It really was like cutting a carrot. Hearing the next question, Isa was so excited that she almost forgot to put her scalpel down before raising her hand. She knew stuff about why some plants were similar to others and it was something that she read a lot about all the time and it was really cool and she wanted to share about it! "Mandrakes and carrots share common ancestors. The mundane mandrake and the carrot are both part of the clade asterids, so they share a lot of common traits, although mandrakes and carrots have many differences because they belong to different orders. The magical mandrake and the mundane mandrake both have many healing properties. Magical mandrakes have a few obvious differences, with the most obvious being that they can move and scream." Okay, that had gone a bit past what she had wanted to say about mandrakes and carrots, but it was hard for to stop talking when she was excited about something. The first part of her answer was the part that was directly related to the question. Taxonomic classification was fun and herbology was the best class ever! Isa had studied a lot of mundane botany from a very young age. She had a whole shelf of books about botany and mundane plants, and another shelf for books about magical plants. It was really interesting to look and cladograms and see what and common ancestors and how things had evolved. Plants were fascinating.

…..well then. “Why am I even teaching?” he lightly teased Isa Wright. “Everything you just said, brilliant! Yes yes, yes. Nice.” Textbook answer, really, and he didn’t mind textbook answers. “I’ll clarify in just a minute everyone!” He clapped his hands together.

Well, of course they did! He chuckled a little at Olivia. “Well, all plants need sunlight. In that case, all plants would be alike, right? But you know, you’re thinking the right way. Mandrakes may look human, but they do still need sunlight...and do all the plant processes like...normal, mundane plants.” So he could applaud that!

He was looking at students as they cut. Just to make sure they were…..doing it close to right and all?? Poor Derfael. The boy should never consider being a muggle surgeon. It may not be an issue because Derf was a wizard and all, but still. “Um. Good job, Derf!” Paul smiled and held up a THUMBS UP.

Really, the cut was terrible. But...it was Derf who HATED HERBOLOGY. So. You know. Paul didn’t want to berate him or anything. “You might have slight issue in the next part, but if you need help, just let me know. Or ask someone..” Since...yeah. “Also…...CAN. YOU. TAKE. THE EARMUFFS. OFF?”

Because communicating like this was terrible. Just trrible.

SPOILER!!: Emmeline

Oops.

ROOOOOOTS. “Along those lines...with a bit more complication, yes, a bit.” He flashed her a smile. She was a younger student. So cute, the younger ones.

And then it hit him.

…...he was trusting eleven year olds with scalpels. Ah, well. Muggle schools dissected ANIMALS as early as ...around that age. So. He wasn’t too worried.

“Eh, somewhat. Because they’re both roots. But Mandrakes actually flower...and carrots obviously don’t.” He hadn’t mentioned that before. “So...both roots, yes. But they grew kind of differently. But you’re on the right track there, Miss Kenning!”

SPOILER!!: Vivian

Sorry.

Awww. Paul smiled. “WeeeeEEELLLLLLL, Vivian, I’ll explain-----” Paul made his way to the front again.

“MANY of you mentioned them being roots. They don’t resemble, physically, carrots. Or parsnips, another thing that in anatomy and in DNA, mandrakes resemble. Their texture resembles a carrot, too, over a potato. And parsnips, too. It’s funny because...no, they aren’t in the same plant family whatsoever. And, as I told Zoryn, they are edible, but not in this state. They are POISONOUS in this state. Unlike carrots. Which are DELICIOUS and good for your eyes, so you all should eat carrots all the time!” Inserting some good adulting right there.

“So….Isa touched on it. But let’s just put it this way...they are cousins! Very VERY distant cousins! Not in the same plant family, but they have the same ancestors. Another thing is...there are many kinds of mandrakes. The mundane ones have so many variations...the magical ones are easier in that regard because there’s only one kind.” Thankfully.

Moving on, though.

Have you ever wondered how mandrakes can shriek? They’re plants. Magical ones, but still. Where do the voices come from? They don’t just...magically appear.” He smiled. “Well, we’re about to get INTO IT!” THIS WAS SO EXCITING NOW! “So...the incision we just made right down the middle, we’re going to make little flaps on EITHER SIDE of that incision. A flap means...well,” Paul put the diagram on the board. The diagrams he had...simply drawn himself. So excuse messy lines, okay?

SPOILER!!: Second Incisions

See those two squares? You’re going to make an incision much like that first one, just cutting RIGHT into the mandrake, but...we need to make flaps. Which means...you know, cutting only the skin apart.” He feared he wasn’t explaining himself correctly. “So just...make your incisions, and then slip either you scalper or your wand’s diffindo under those flaps of skin part of the squares….and peeeeel those skins back.” Ahem. This wasn’t grossing Paul out BECAUSE IT WAS A PLANT. But it might freak some of the students out.

“I want you to touch what’s under the skin.” Paul made his incisions, carefully, tongue between his tongue, and pull the skin back using his finger and the scalpel. He poked the layer underneath the skin layer. “It feels…….like…...a ROOT." DRAMATIC. “Nothing gross here! No blood! Nothing! It’s a ROOT! Solid...root.” Paul actually gave a chuckle. “But the next part is a little more difficult...but it’s just SOOOO iNTERESTING!” So DAMN interesting, but he wouldn’t use that word in a LESSON.

“We’re going to dig where we have just made the little flaps.” DIG. “Dig using your scalpel, wand, and that little poking rod if you must. You will eventually feel something….SQUISHY IN THERE!!!” SO SQUISHY AND SPONGY.

LUUUUUUUNNNNNNGGGSSSSS!

“THE POWERHOUSE OF THE VOICE! LUNGS!” Paul suddenly yelled as he dug into his mandrake using his scalpel. He poked the lungs with his poker, FEELING THE SQUIIIIISH! No noises, thankfully, since the plant was dry. And not moist. “And since mandrakes, while plants, do have voices, they would, of course be equipped with a healthy pair of lungs. Especially since their cries are, you know, a death sentence if you hear it. The lungs are where AIR come from. But mandrakes don’t breathe right? Well, we’ll move on to that in just a second! I’ll wait for everyone to catch up! You may cut the lungs out if you want to have a closer look or inspection of any sort. They feel different than our lungs, or even animal lungs, as you’ll see.”

“Now, CHOP CHOP! LITERALLY!” Paul cracked himself up and dropped his scalpel.

WHOOPS!

He stooped to pick it up, still chuckling, and took a looooong swing of water once he was done with all that talking. Aaaaaand he stepped off the platform to start weaving in and out of the students’ tables. Just..making sure everything was going smoothly.

OOC: Please excuse how long this is. xD Hence why I didn’t end up posting last night. You all have at least 24 hours now. Confused about what Paul is asking? Nudge me xD words are..hard yknow. Lmao.

Steps that need completion:
1. Single incision down the middle (first picture)

first incision

Melbourne couldn’t help but grin when Professor Meters got SO excited over her poncho comment. Really, she did like his collection of colorful ponchos….shed did like that they kept the elder man cozy and warm because that was important wasn’t it? Mel grinned over to Isa when Professor Meyers commented that she had gotten it right. The young hufflepuff girl got a thumbs up and a grin from Mel when she turned to look over to the girl. Yes, Mel was proud of Isa for getting it right. Even if the hufflepuff was two years her junior Mel did consider the young aspiring herbologist to be her friend.

Really, she’d even felt all proud when she’d spotted the girl donning a red bandana…those were like Mel’s THING in her third year and even now, NOW Isa was rocking that sytle…or well, she and and it was SO very Mel approved.

Now.

They had to chop chopp choooooooop this tuberous plant up.

With her wand in hand she looked at the notes.

SPOILER!!: notes

Steps to Complete ::

With the instructions scribbled down in her notes Melbourne immediately put her sweat pea perfumed mask back over the lower portion of her face. Then it hit her. This would be the peeeeerrrrrfect time to play a game of am I smiling? the little childish game she used to pester Tenacius with as a child. Turning to look at her friend she just grinned with her eyes at him. Turning her attention back to her workstation, her boyfriend, and the dead plant on the table in front of her. ”Lets do this,” she muttered to herself more than anything as she pressed the sharp metal tip of the scalpel into the flesh of the dead plant. Professor Meyers had gotten the texture right, the flesh of the plant was like a carrots. Strong, resilient and still bendable and supple on some level…smelly, was another word for it. Her hands were steady as she cut down the center of the dead plant.

There. The lateral incision was completed.

Now, she had to do the rest of the incisions. Still, she just quietly looked around the room…was anyone else having a hard time with this? Thinking about how these were magic al plants that used to be alive.

Quick catch up!

Kane had always heard HORROR stories of No-Maj science classes, where people had to chop up frogs and pigs and all sorts of other things. The thought had never grossed him out, though - he always had a pretty strong stomach, until it came to blood. HUMAN blood to be exact. Animal blood? No big deal. So when he realized that they were doing a dissection, well, he was excited. He was totally going to get ALL UP IN THERE with this mandrake dissection, yo! ANATOMY FOR THE WIN!

First incision was pretty simple. Taking his mandrake - sorry little dude, but he was already gone, no harm done here - he took the scalpel and made a nice, long cut down the middle. EWWWW it was squishy, this was AWESOME! Then, he followed Myers' instructions and went to the top of his incision, cutting two squares on either side of it. He had to make flaps? Oh, he meant to like...flip them open like a book. Ok, that didn't seem to hard.

It actually WAS kind of hard. The flaps did not want to STAY, and Kane had to extend the margins of his incision a bit. His mandrake had a bit of a broader chest, soooo...yeah. The skin was really not wanting to stay folded back like this, but finally he was able to keep them down without them flipping back up.

He raised his hand, a question suddenly popping in to his brain. "Um, Professor, this might be a stupid question but...do mandrakes have like, a rib cage and all that? Cause on a human, you know, you'd have to like...break through the ribs to get to the lungs," he pointed out. If that was the case with mandrakes too....Kane was READY, man.

MANDRAKES HAD LUNGS?!?!

:whaa: That was SO COOL. She had supposed they did have some sort of breathing mechanism but she had never really thought of them having lung like organs... Incredible. She couldn't wait to see them.... but then they had to feel them too? Merlin... She wasn't so sure about touching them but she would go along with it. Now what did she have to do now? Two square incisions or something?

Aha! That was right. Two square incisions. Olivia glanced up to verify what Professor Myers was saying with the picture. Ohh.. Now she's got it. Before she would do anything else, she wrote down the steps she needed to accomplish. Once those were written in her handy dandy notebook, she turned to the mandrake. One vertical cut had been made and now she needed

SPOILER!!: Steps to Complete

She took her wand and took a deep breath and then pointed it at the mandrake. She cast diffindo and then made a straight line from left to right that touched the top of her previous vertical incision. There was one. Then she moved her wand about a few centimeters down to approximately the same place that was shown in the diagram and cast diffindo again, creating another horizontal line. And now she had to finish up the incision by connecting the two lines at the edges with two small vertical incisions. Moving her wand to the left vertical incision, she cast diffindo, creating her incision. And then she repeated this for the right vertical incision.

That was step two... Now on to step three... Peeling the skin flaps back. It was just a plant. Just a plant. She had to remind herself of this several times. Taking a deep breath, she readied her wand and then slipped it a little under one of the flaps and cast diffindo again to peel one of the flaps back. No blood. Nothing. It looked very plant like just as Professor Myers had said. Then she cast diffindo again on the other flap. With both flaps peeled back, Olivia took the rod and then began poking underneath the skin of the mandrake. Everything felt dry in there which she supposed was good because that meant the mandrake wasn't suffering from all of this... She began her search with the rod and didn't find anything. She titled the rod to the left and then to the right and then she began to gently vertically dig. Nothing.. Then she tried the angle. Maybe this mandrake had small lungs or something?

It was at that precise moment that Olivia poked something with the rod and she nearly jumped as she hadn't expected it to be so squishy. She poked it again. Squish. Squish. That sounded so weird and even felt weird. She wanted to take a closer look. The Professor said they could remove the lungs to get a better gaze so the brunette set about preparing to remove the mandrake's lungs so she could really see what was happening there.

ArianaBlack 06-27-2017 03:49 AM

For the record, she wasn’t ever PLANNING on eating a mandrake. They had a face on them. It’d be weird. She just had to ask. The question had practically clawed it’s way out of her. And she wasn’t about to get herself poisoned either. She’d leave that to the Hufflepuffs or something. Seemed like something they’d do.

The second year managed to stop paying attention at some point into Paul’s ramblings. But once the man mentioned her name, she was thrusted back into focus!!! Aaaaaaand then she was out again. That was, however, until they got to play with knives again!!! Well, medical knives anyway. But still, same difference.

Zoryn LOVED this lesson for the simple fact that she got to play with sharp, dangerous objects that her mother often kept hidden from her. MWAHAHAHA. She could totally take someone down using this thing. Not that she would, but it was a thought that went through her head. She’d be lying if she denied it. Eeeerrrr she took a look at her crooked cut from before. How the heck were they supposed to make flaps on this thing?

The more she stared at it, the more it started resembling a really ugly baby. This was gruesome. EWWWWWwwwww, she made a face as she used her scalpel to get under it’s skin. And er, her flaps were a little asymmetrical, but hopefully that was cool with Meyers? And on his cue, she poked her finger into the plant. Oh. It really did feel like a root. Weird. Imagine if his is what the inside of babies looked like. WHY DID SHE KEEP THINKING OF UGLY BABIES, GET IT OUT OF HER HEAD PLS.

Aaaaaand, with that she began excavating further. If she found lungs, she was totally gonna keep them. Like, as a souvenir or something!!!! Dig. Dig. Dig. La la la. Luuuuuuuuuuuungs, where you at? And just as her Professor had claimed, there they were. In all their ugly baby glory.

Yeah, definitely pocketing those.

Isa giggled at Professor Myers’ teasing question. She was such a plant nerd. A compliment from Professor Myers! He said everything she said was brilliant. Isa beamed with joy and excitement. Herbology was the best subject ever and one of her favorite people ever had said what she said was brilliant! Might have been too much of a textbook answer, but Isa happened to be very knowledgeable in this subjects. Reading herbology and botany textbooks was something she did for fun. She probably knew more about herbology than the average third year, and that was because she studied herbology at every opportunity. Her whole life she had been studying herbology, and herbology was an especially exciting subject for Isa. When she got excited about a subject she knew a lot about she couldn’t help sharing. Hey, maybe she could be a herbology professor one day. That would be really cool.

PROFESSOR MYERS HAD MENTIONED HER NAME in the explanation to the class of the idea that Isa had touched on! Isa was fangirl screaming in her head, but on the outside she kept quiet and just smiled. This was the best day ever. Obviously this was also the best lesson ever. Okay, so she usually referred to all of Professor Myers’ lessons as the best lesson ever because Professor Myers was a great professor and HERBOLOGY WAS HER FAVORITE THING IN THE WHOLE WORLD, but this lesson was extra special because they were learning about something awesome (which also applied to every herbology lesson) and Professor Myers had said her answer was brilliant. Mostly she was excited to be learning about what was inside a mandrake and how they were different from mundane mandrakes. This lesson was definitely going on her list of favorite herbology lessons ever.

Isa noticed Mel smiling and giving her a thumbs up, and Isa smiled back at Mel. Mel was a good person, someone who really inspired Isa. Isa liked Mel. Of course, Isa liked everyone, but she especially liked Mel because Mel was a great girl to go to for advice and Mel was also Haddie Denaker’s friend.

Scribbling notes as Professor Myers talked, Isa absorbed all of the information about plant families and the next step of the dissection. ”Tamarillos are in the family Solanaceae like mandrakes are, but tamarillos are an edible fruit.” #RandomPlantFactOfTheDay Tamarillos made pretty good sauce too. Was that related enough to their discussion? She liked knowing the classification of plants.

LUNGS! MANDRAKES HAD LUNGS! Isa wasn’t sure what she had been expecting, maybe some sort of air chamber that was more plant-y than lungs, but she hadn’t really been expecting lungs. Lungs were usually associated with animals after all.

Isa picked up her scalpel and made two more incisions in a similar to the first incision, but this time they were horizontal across the mandrake near its “head” instead of vertical. Sliding her scalpel under the skin between the two horizontal incisions, she peeled back the skin and repeated this on the other side of the vertical incision. There, now she had flaps. What was the point of flaps when there was still tough root under it? Seemed like skin flaps were a better idea for animal dissections than plant dissections. This did give them a good look at the root, so maybe that was why they were cutting the flaps first. Isa poked the root with her finger. Yep, definitely still in solid root.

Okay, so they were going to dig to the lungs. Isa carefully cut through the root, trying not to go too far and puncture the lungs. Stopping her cut into the root when the scalpel no longer met as much resistance, Isa dug out a section of root to reveal the lungs. Gently she probed the lungs with her poking stick thing. Picking up her scalpel again, she carefully cut out the lungs to get a better look at them.

Ah, these were the lungs responsible for the cacophonous deadly shriek of the mature magical mandrake. What were they made of? ”Are the mandrake lungs structured from a different sort of material than the main root?” The lungs were obviously thinner and less rigid, so the lungs and the tough part of the root were probably completely different materials. What sort of material the lungs were Isa did not know. Hopefully Professor Myers would be explaining more about the lungs and how they worked. Did honking daffodils have some sort of lungs? They could make sound, but that sort of sound was clearly different and far less likely to be fatal. ”How do honking daffodils make sound? Do they have lungs too, or a different mechanism for producing sound?” Could they dissect one of those too to compare sound producing structures in magical plants? Was she asking too many questions? No, questions were learning and learning was good. She was making connections in her brain. Herbology was the best subject ever! Isa loved it.

Professor questionz....

So the mandrakes and carrots were cousins. Wow that kinda reminded him of himself and Deo. Another joke to crack on the cousin-- Ace is the carrot and Deo is the mandrake. Whiney and everything, yup.

Ok so back to the dissecting. the Gryffindor continued on the incision and made a flap as instructed. His face revealing the curiosity and surprise of what he's discovering of the magical root crop. Very plant like indeed, except for a few bits here and there which looked like the plant version of humanoid organs. A bit of lifiting and moving here and there and voila!-- there be the mandrake lungs. So tiny eh? Who would've thought something so delicate can be so magically destructive....

... then again isnt this just the one part of the destructive wailing? Unless the rest of it just all magic. In any case it bears asking "Professor, do magical mandrakes have vocal cords too?"

The first year was not impressed with Dark Professor's response; roots were roots, how could they be "roots with complicated bits"? That made NO sense at all, just so he knew. She was briefly happy for Isa when the professor mentioned her friend's name at the start of his really long lecture about whatever. She tried to pay attention; it was super important to pay attention to things they were cutting, wasn't it? Unfortunately, the Dark Professor seemed determined to talk forever and her attention span in Herbology lasted maybe two minutes long. It was like that in almost all of her lessons that involved professors talking a lot.

She thought it might be weird to get out a notebook when this was a practical lesson, so she couldn't doodle creatures on the side of her notes like she usually did. She wasn't going to let a little thing like no parchment stop her, though; she had a scalpel! Emmeline ran the scalpel lightly over the table tops in the shapes of various creatures. It made a SCRITCHing sound, but she had waited for all the professor's talking to stop before she started doing it, so that Jessa wouldn't miss anything. The sound was mostly covered up by people chatting and cutting and whatever too. She had paid attention to the demonstration part, because she was trying to get better marks after all. From this distance, the cutting and flaps and lungs didn't look too bad except--

WHY DID PLANTS HAVE LUNGS?! She knew about Mandrake cries and all that, but what she really wanted to know was: how was it possible for plants to have people parts inside them?! Her strong suspicions about the Dark wizard professor just kept growing by the minute.

Nobody else seemed upset by the lungs thing, though, not even her older Housemates. So Emmeline supposed it was okay for now -- but she was waiting for other signs that the professor had done something to people to make these plants. She wasn't going to put anything past him. She glanced at Derf for his reaction to the LUNGS, but she wasn't sure how much he was actually hearing or noticing because of his earmuffs.

Reluctantly shoving her qualms aside, Emmeline pressed the scalpel against the supposed plant again and carved one square on the side of her first incision. The only problem was, she was still kind of thinking about lungs and people parts being in plants, so her hand was pretty shaky. She managed both of the squares after a lot of effort, but the "lines" were pretty jagged on both of them.

Now for the creepy part. Professor Dark Wizard had made flaps -- ewww -- to get to the lungs, so she tried to imitate him with her scalpel. The skin on the first box-side thing was fairly easy to peel back, but it was SO SO gross! Emmeline was relieved, though, because she didn't see any obviously people parts underneath the skin. She decided to make both flaps before looking for the lungs, and promptly started trying to peeeeel the other side off. Only, it didn't want to peel back at all. The first year stared at the skin and slipped her scalpel underneath the skin, but it kept not going all the way under. It kept getting stuck instead, which Emmeline did NOT appreciate. This was weird/gross enough without an uncooperative scalpel, thank you.

Letting loose a frustrated sigh, Emmeline turned back to the box thing that she had successfully turned into a flap. She poked the skin with the scalpel and used it to move flappy loose skin out of her way and proceeded to SLAM the scalpel inside the plant as she dug around. She didn't like this scalpel, okay? A few slams and some digging later, the scalpel made what seemed like a squishhh. The first year grimaced as she reeeached inside and pulled out -- half a lung. Ewwwwwww!

Emmeline flung the lung half away from her onto the table because it was squishy like a person and leaking and GROSS! She forced herself to dig out the other half and put it next to the first one; obviously, she'd been digging too roughly with the stupid scalpel. She took lots of deep breaths before attacking the other square thing. This was gross, but she was going to do it because she was a Gryffindor and NOT a baby.

Okay, okay, okay. She tried to slip her scalpel under the skin to peel it back, but it was covered in lung juice and sliding all over the place. Emmeline tried to breathe more deeply into her mask, but honestly she was feeling a little light-headed. Had Professor Dark Wizard drugged their masks?! She might have walked out right then, but Dora and Professor Marchand had both told her she was a real Gryffindor recently, and she wasn't going to let a dumb plant beat her. Or a Dark wizard pretending to be a professor.

Emmeline squeezed her eyes shut and wiped the scalpel off on back of the skin flap that she'd successfully peeled to get the first lung. That done, she opened her eyes and looked purposefully ONLY at the skin that needed to be peeled. It's just a plant, it's just a plant, she reminded herself sternly; she didn't need to think about her doubts right now. Once her hand was mostly steady, the skin slowly peeled back to reveal more plant guts. Emmeline gritted her teeth and dug around under the second flap more carefully than she had the first time, until she felt the gross squisshhhh. She purposely turned her head away from the plant and carefully retrieved the (thankfully intact) lung, before setting it beside both halves of the first lung. Phewww. That had been the hardest part, right?

Lady of Light 06-27-2017 10:27 AM

Nope. NOPE. Etta wasn't grossed out at all. Well.. actually, she was. Just a tad bit. She simply avoided looking down at the mandrake until the professor completely stopped speaking and her classmates started to get on with the next part of the activity. Thank goodness for magic but she'd probably would have passed out if she had to do any incision with a scalpel. Also, who would have thought mandrakes had lungs? But it actually made sense.. kind of. Since they did scream a lot.

Now, what did she have to start with? She studied her notes before checking the diagram once again. Right, two squares. Holding her wand firmly in her wand, her eyes finally drifted down towards the mandrake again, feeling a sense of unease. Yeah, no. She could do this. Casting a diffindo, she carefully followed the lines that were shown in the diagram, making sure that they were precise. After what felt like forever, there was a square on the left side. Phew. She paused for just a moment, repeating the same on the other side, hoping that her lines weren't too messy. Finally, she was done with it. She turned to look at her notes, wondering what the next step was.

.. to make flaps. Etta took deep breaths, trying not to look too grossed out or.. panic. If a plant was going to freak her out so much.. well, healing was definitely not a career option for her. Readying her wand.. but deciding to go with the rod instead, she carefully started to poke under the left-incision. It only felt like root like the professor had mentioned.. before carefully peeling the skin back. Okay, seemed to work. She repeated the same on the right side as well before pulling away for a moment. Okay, so the flaps were neatly peeled back so.. moving on to the next step.

She refused to poke with her finger, since she wasn't wearing any gloves, so she continued poking under the flaps with the rod. Yeah, no. This wasn't weird at all. Ahem. Etta wasn't keen on digging.. honestly. But she didn't have a choice, did she? Trying not to look too disgusted, she carefully started to dig gently, hoping this class would just get over soon. She was starting to feel a little uncomfortable. Ugh. After poking around for a moment or two, she could feel something squishy underneath.. just like what the professor had said earlier. Oh, goodness. That felt so weird.. extremely weird. But thinking it was better to just get it over with as soon as possible, Etta set about finding finding the other lung as well. Soon enough.. squish, squish. There. Taking more deep breaths and trying to calm herself down, the girl quickly retrieved the lungs with the help of the rod and placed them on the workstation. At least, she couldn't smell any of it.. which was a HUGE relief. Now that she was done, she focused on her notes, avoiding the mandrake and its lungs altogether.. and waited for class to resume.

Swear to Merlin if Derf didn't stop shouting right by her ear she was gonna silence him til the lesson was over. It was lucky she never tried cutting while he was speaking since her attempts at removing his earmuffs and explaining the lack of need clearly weren't working.

With a sigh, she turned to Professor Myers once more. This was important, they were cutting these suckers open and there was a wealth of knowledge currently flowing from the lips of the Professor. Make no mistake, Jessa was taking in every bit of it, even the stuff he said they wouldn't ever be needing for their exams. It was a relief to know she wouldn't need to remember such technical and complicated things but at the same time, knowing for the sake of knowing was great too.

Oblivious to the horrified, frustrated or disgruntled looks of some of her classmates, Jessa went on with her dissecting, a content little expression on her face.

As the Professor had instructed, she took her wand and made the second incision creating the flaps. Something told her she'd feel more of the difference with a scalpel than her wand though...so after this second set of incisions she reached for the sharp instrument and used it to peel away the skin. He was right. It wasn't at all like flesh. Very....what was the word....?

ANYWAY, he said they could take the lungs out!!! JBDFWOGROURWGFEOI! Jessa reached into the dead mandrake's chest and fished them right out, giving them a light squeeze before placing them on the table. Hands down, this had to be the coolest Herbology lesson EVER. "Professor, can I keep this mandrake afterwards?" She asked, poking lightly at the set of lungs. She could only imagine the power behind them while they were in their prime.....and might have wanted to try replicating or reanimating it--just to see if it was possible. What WAS the effect of necromancy on plants anyway? Merlin so many questions, so little time!!

Catching up

Olly had managed to find a quill in his bag and was about to draw a mustache or something on the mask when Professor Myers started talking, which means class was starting, which meant he should pay attention instead of draw. Which was too bad actually because his mask would have looked really cool. Oh well, he still kept it on. For the aesthetic.

And it was time to make the first cut. It looked really easy. Just one straight line up the middle of the mandrake's stomach. Olly picked up his scalpel and held it in front of the plant. He really wouldn't have had trouble cutting open a plant except this one looked so humanlike and it was weird and it made him feel weird. But Professor Myers was saying once you cut it you could see it wasn't that humanlike and more like a carrot. And Olly could cut open a carrot. So he just stopped thinking about it and did it very quickly. And it wasn't that bad, really.

Due to his slight internal freakout he didn't really have time to dwell on the similarities between mandrakes and carrots before it was time to make the second incision. This one wasn't as bad because he had already done the first one so he might as well keep going. He started with the right side. Olly cut along the side and peeled the little square of plant skin back. Then he proceeded to do the same for the other side. It worked out pretty well. Now all he need to do was touch it. Olly didn't mind touching things. In fact, it was pretty fun. He barely even hesitated before poking at the root like Professor Myers had told them. And then was the digging. He used his scalpel to dig past the root until it hit something squishy. That was it! That was the lungs! That was...weird. Gross. Really Cool. Olly poked it a few times with the scalpel and then reached in with his finger to poke it with that too.

catch up and a very unhappy Stasya

Still poking at the mandrake in front of her, Stasya had looked up once when Vivian and then Liv had sat down by her and smiled at them. Granted, her expression was probably hidden by the mask, but she still had. She wasn’t exactly excited, though. Curious, but not excited. The mandrake looked too much like a creature for her to be excited, even if she was pretty much convinced it was dead by now with all her poking. If it came down to it, she was definitely asking for help from either of the two older girls. If it seemed too much like she was dissecting a creature, dead or alive. This lesson was making her nearly dislike Herbology as much as she disliked Potions. Why couldn’t they just learn about plants that looked like plants. There were lots of them in the greenhouses after all.

It was making her believe Derf’s theory that Professor Myers was a dark wizard that much more, even if he totally didn’t look like a dark wizard to her. He looked like a fun grandpa, but not when he was so happy about cutting into plants that looked like gnomes or something. It just made her wonder if he would be just as excited about cutting up actual gnomes.

The mandrake looked nothing like a carrot, Professor. She’d much rather be cutting up a carrot, because then she could eat it. She refused to eat the mandrake. But still, she picked up the scalpel off her tray, choosing not to use her wand. She’d practice Diffindo on something else. Standing up so she had a better angle, she carefully made the first incision, breathing out a barely noticeable sigh of relief when it at least felt like cutting into a carrot. And the cut even looked mostly straight. Maybe she’d still be able to get through the lesson…and then lungs happened. Professor Myers said the mandrake had LUNGS, and she nearly wanted to cry. She couldn’t pretend when there were lungs involved.

She still managed to make the second incisions, but was much more hesitant when it came to peeling the outer layer of bark away. In her mind, the skin was bark. It had to be, and she even gently poked inside the opened flesh until she felt the squish. But she wasn’t taking the lungs out. No, they were staying inside the mandrake where they ought to be, even if it was alive. She didn’t even understand why Jessa looked so happy about it. Or why nobody else had a problem pulling the mandrake apart.

Praise? What praise. Derf continued to hear nothing as his earmuffs did there job efficiently and perfectly. You know, maybe he should use these and go work with the fwoopers sometime because he reeeeeeally was not confident on the whole Silencing Charm. Still couldn't get through that magic with a stutter and last time he had tried practicing it - on an alarm clock - it had BLOWN UP and he would be traumatized for life and inconsolable if he blew up a fwooper.

And now as he looked down as his haphazardly sliced open mandrake all he could see was a fwooper. A poor innocent fwooper. Which, if he stopped to think, he would realize was very wrong because the size was all off. The mandrake was WAY too large to be a fwooper size but then again he had imagined adults as his fallen best friends bopping lifelessly in the water...so this was a smaller scale version of that.

His mind began to swirl. Death. Near death. Death. Death.

Any shouting or pleading done by Dark Lord Myers went through him and left the Hufflepuff completely untouched. The Hufflepuff suddenly dropped his scalpel - blade side down and right SMACK into the surface of the table sticking out of it like an explorer claiming new land as their own - and in the next instant the second year was trembling.

Then the tears came and soon there was a steady stream cascading down his face and dripping on to the dead mandrake.

As usual, Myers was spewing a lot of information, and Althea tried her best to keep up. So, mandrakes and carrots were relatives?? This was too much, she'd have to ask Levi about this later. At the mention of the mandrakes shrieking, Althea blinked and looked down at the now, lifeless mandrake before her. She'd never thought about it before but she assumed that because of magic they were able to make a lot of noise for no reason.

Scalpel in hand, Althea made an effort to, once again, cut neatly into the mandrake. She didn't have the steadiest hand, but it more or less looked okay. With furrowed brows, she slowly lifted the flaps of the skin, peeling them back just as instructed. Huh. She didn't really expect blood (it was a plant, after all) but it was still strange to see that it was very plant-like underneath it all. Myers was doing that thing he did where he was exceedingly dramatic for no reason. She fought the urge to roll her eyes, and instead chose to focus her attention on the mandrake to poke and prod the dead plant's insides.

It was disgusting but also extremely interesting. That there were lungs in the mandrake was surprising to her. Lungs but no blood, no other organs? What a strange, strange plant. Again, she was thankful that she'd brought her gloves because there was no way she was touching anything without protecting her hands. Althea worked diligently to cut the lungs out, because as nasty as cutting up a smelly mandrake was, she was too enthralled by it all. As she cut, she heard a sound nearby and turned her head quickly, nearly cutting too deep (she pulled her hand away before she did too much damage.) The enigma™ was making a scene. It wasn't unusual for him, but he was crying and Althea felt bad. After reaching into her bag to pull out some tissues, the fifth year left her work station and placed a hand on top of Derf's head, giving him a gentle pat before handing him some tissues. Saint Althea to the rescue.

Steps to Complete ::

1. Single incision down the middle (first picture)
2. Cut the two squares on either side of first incision
3. Make the flaps (peel the skin back using scalpel/wand
4. Poke the root part underneath those skin flaps
5. Dig until you find DA LUNGS
Take as many or as little posts as you need/want.

“Very good, Melbourne! Now just the squares...and digging for the lungs and you’ll be up with us!” He grinned and gave her a thumbs up. The smell was putrid. Absolutely PUTRID but he was okay. He dealt with stinky things all day every day.

Kane had a good question! Paul flittered over to his work station. “Well, no. Mandrakes don’t have bones. They don’t need bones. They’re plants. And as for the LUNGS….well, we’ll get into that.”

IT WOULD BE SO FUN! “And nice job, Kane. Doing well.”

3. Make the flaps (peel the skin back using scalpel/wand

5. Dig until you find the lungs

As he passed in front of Olivia, he could tell she was sort of enjoying this? Hmm. He smiled at her. “Nice nice. Yes, the lungs are connected to the...like ours, to the throat and everything--so you just have to---” and he leaned over and snapped the top part of the lungs that connected to the tube that would lead into the throat. It didn’t make any noise. There was no liquid. “There. Now….you can pull them out.” He nodded and moved on.

…..”Good job, Zoryn,” he said as he passed behind her. He saw her pocket the lungs...the tiny, tiny lungs. “I’m not sure those will make it in your pocket, my dear. You can always grab a small container from the front and keep them in better condition if you like,” he said softly with a wink.

Heh.

Little Isa was adorable, and Paul smiled at her. “You ask a good question---everyone, PAY ATTENTION----the lungs are made from the same material as the rest of the root. They are not like our lungs or like human lungs. I will ESSSPLAIN in a minute.” When everyone was in the same place.

“Honking Daffodils do not have lungs. Weirdly enough. Their honking isn’t...as powerful.”

The passion in her was astounding. Really, it was cute. Very very cute.

“OOOOHH Tenaicus! We’re getting there! SLOOOW DOWN, M’boy!” he teased from across the room as he peered over Emmeline’s shoulder. Tenacius was always doing that! Paul had to chuckle. The boy was just a galleon ahead of everyone! Asking the important questions!

He was weaving in and out of the tables, watching everyone. Helping those who needed it. He passed Emmeline a few times as he spoke….and he missed it, the first time, but he quickly saw her do it...again.

Running the scalpel over the table. He clicked his tongue and stood in front of her. “Hello, dear,” he said with a small smile. “I...really….don’t appreciate you doing that? To my tables...they...are school property after all. Please please don’t do that again...I don’t want marked up tables.” He was friendly enough in manner. “A point from Gryffindor--” he said swiftly as he turned around to check on Melbourne with her progress. “You can have your notebook out, you know.” He thought he had said that! Maybe not. His memory was...blah, as of late.

He felt bad. Like, a little bad. But really, a scalpel...on a table...and they weren’t NICE tables by any means, but that didn’t mean one could just…….scrape them. Or draw on them, with anything.

Luckily, he didn’t see the mishap with the flinging half-a-lung. NOPE.

SPOILER!!: Etta

Nope.

Henrietta the prefect looked unsure, and Paul chuckled as he passed her. “You’re doing wonderfully, Etta. Promise.”

Good Merlin, Jessa Cambridge must have been a handful for her parents, Paul thought. He chuckled at her question. “You can keep it...just...in here. You can’t bring it back to your dorm. THat would be...weird. Don’t carry dead plants around. Not...a good way to make friends, really,” he laughed. “I have experience in that regard.”

STORY FOR ANOTHER TIME, THOUGH.

“Great great, Oliver! Keep it up, m’boy!” he said cheerfully.

THIS LESSON WAS FUN. And almost everyone was enjoying it, too, and it just...PAUL WAS BASKING IN THE GLORY OF LEARNING THINGS ALONGSIDE HIS STUDENTS.

This one didn’t look….pleased about it. “Don’t worry, Staysa. You’re doing great! I know it’s kindaaaa’ gross!” But she had chosen to come to the lesson, right? Right. So he was under the impression that anyone who chose to attend could handle what was happening.

…..oh no.

Derf was crying, and Paul’s worst SCENARIO for this lesson happened just...in an instant. EVERYTHING HAD BEEN FINE. EVERYONE HAD BEEN FINE. He rushed over, crouching in front of Derf’s spot and speaking softly.

Althea was being sweet. A smile crept onto the older man’s face, but it twitched and he tried to keep his face steady. This was serious. DERF WAS CRYING. “Derfael...if this is too much for you, I have an alternative assignment….I posted that on the assignment board...for this lab. I don’t want anyone to be uncomfortable or...cry. It not only makes you feel bad...but it disrupts the lesson, too. And I’m your professor----step outside a minute. Take a deep breath. Come back in if you can handle it. And if not, just go have a lie down. I’ll give you the assignment tomorrow.” He spoke gently.

Merlin, he needed to move the lesson on. They didn’t have all the time in the world for this. And Paul felt badly.

...He’d move on. Come back and check on Derf in a minute.

MERLIN.

Paul strode to the front of the room, grabbing his scalpel. “SOOO we can see their lungs. The lungs are made pretty differently from ours since, they are plants. They don’t need lungs to breathe like we do. Their lungs’ SOLE PURPOSE is for...well, if you know anything about human anatomy, you might know that the lungs are the powerhouse, but the larynx, the voice box, is what causes the vibrations that make our voices. The same can be said for the mandrakes. So..next, we’ll be cutting into their necks. Right in their esophagus!” FUN TIMES. "As I told Isa before, the lung are made from the same material makeup as the rest of the plant. Because plants...are weird. And not animals."

The neck picture was SLAPPED on the board. It fell off, and he quickly bent over to pick it up and SLAP IT ON THE BOARD again! STAY. STAY. “Make a small incision in their neck. This one was hard to diagram, but it’s up on there! Stop right under the chin. Just a straight line….” the line was on the diagram. “Now, we’re going to make flaps, but they will be in the shape of triangles. Start in the middle of your previous (straight line) incision as best you can, then cut diagonally up, and then start at the middle again, and cut diagonally down (on the right). Then you will fold that flap back. Do the same on the other side!” his words sounded like nothing to him. Had he been in this lesson, those pictures would be a LIFE SAVER because his words? Nooo. The diagrams helped.

Straight line, then cut the triangles like before with the LUNG area, and fold those flaps back. O___O NOT TOO DIFFICULT, RIGHT?

SPOILER!!: Diagram

As you peel some of the skin back, you should see the the larynx! AKA….THE VOICE BOX! SUCH. EXCITEMENT. Paul set his scalpel down after peering into the larynx tube a bit. “You can set your scalpel or wand down for a bit!”

He paused. Drank water. Cleared his throat. Blew his nose. Wonderful.

“Now, we’ll take a peek into mouth. The larynx is the voice box, and the nose and mouth ends the process of producing sound. Mandrakes don’t use their mouths to eat like we animals do. Their mouth’s only purpose is to make that noise that is fatal to us. It is protection. Open their mouths up a bit and see if you can see their tongue...their throats. Their nose is very small. This is why their screeches sound so nasally, eh?” Made total sense to THIS Herbologist. “Now, if they don’t breathe in oxygen...how do the lungs help make their voices? Their screech? We suck in air...and our lungs push air out into the larynx...this is what causes sound to escape. But if mandrakes don’t breathe...what are you all’s thoughts on how this works with mandrakes? Mandrakes are magical plants, after all….”

He was keen to hear their thoughts on this.

Now....where was Derf? Was he okay? Paul needed to talk to him.

OOC: I am severely sucking at moving on every 24 hours but xD expect a post in at LEAST 24 if not more hours <3 This is fun. Thank you all!

Steps that need completion:
1. Single incision down the middle
2. Cut the two squares on either side of first incision
3. Make the flaps (peel the skin back using scalpel/wand
4. Poke the root part underneath those skin flaps
5. Dig until you find DA LUNGS

6. Straight line incision in the center of the neck (picture]
7. Triangle flaps (and done with scalpel for now)
8. Open their mouths for a peek/examination
