Joint HoM and MS Lesson 3: The International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy

It’s the very last day in April and it was a brilliant day out. Your Professors- Newton and K Stewart- have taken the time to plan a joint lesson that they hope you will enjoy and know you will find quite useful. Though it was being held in Professor Rose’s classroom, Professor Kay was there at the door to greet all of you as you enter. Rose was sitting at her desk, waiting to say hello as well.

Go on and take a seat anywhere you like! The room was rather airy as Professor Newton had every single window open. Just don’t doze off thanks to the good weather should you choose to sit next to one. Professor Stewart would be most displeased.

What shall today’s lessons be about? Written on the board before the room is “MAGIC IS MIGHT. Or is it?’’ You may want to ponder upon this statement while you wait for things to get started.

Lesson's Progression:
What do you know about the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy?
Some clarification
Explanation of the Statute of Secrecy
Tell us about Carlotta Pinkstone or your opinion about the Statute
Information about Carlotta and your opinions!
Activity time!
Final part of the activity!

OOC: Welcome, everyone! Chatter is okay but just do not go overboard. Remember to read the rules for both Professors Newton and Stewart before posting. Also keep in mind that SS rules apply! Whit will get started in 24 hours! ^_^ THE LESSON HAS STARTED!!

Kitty was very interested for this lesson. It was being held by her two favorite professors on her two favorite subjects and she was insanely curious as to what the subject would be.

"Hello Professor Stewart, how are you?" said Kitty with a smile as she walked past Kay at the door. It was a nice day, wasn't it?

She sat down at the front row and read the message on the board. "Hello Professor Newton," she said as she mentally wondered if they were about to have a super interesting debate about magic.

ChanceCoeur 07-20-2017 08:27 PM

Heading into the classroom, Noelle looked around at how different it would be considering it was a joint class. It was rare but she was one of the early ones in class this time. Hmm.

"Hey Kitty" She said waving at her fellow prefect. She went in further and perched herself at one of the desks before looking at the board. Huh. Magic is might... or is it? What did that mean?

"Good morning professors" She said before pulling a few things out to get ready for class.

Zellanna 07-20-2017 09:01 PM

Kyle made his way into the classroom and waved to the professors and students already there. He was lousy at History, but great in Muggle Studies. How in the world were the two going to fit together? How could they learn about muggles in a history of magic class? It didn't make any sense! But if anyone could fit them together, it would certainly be the professors. He went and sat next to one of the windows and laid his head on the desk while he waited for class to start. But he wasn't going to fall asleep! NOPE!!

ArianaBlack 07-20-2017 11:07 PM

It was like the two WORST classes in the entire world got together and had a baby.

Like WHO WANTED THIS?????

Literally no one asked for this. NO ONE.

Unless someone DID ask for this. In which case, when Zoryn found out which of her classmates it was, she was gonna personally see to it that they never had another idea ever again. This was the WORST day of her ENTIRE life!!!! WHY WOULD THE PROFESSORS DO THIS TO HER??????? She already had to take both of the classes individually. WASN'T THAT ENOUGH PAIN TO GO THROUGH????????????????????????

The second year had a VERY intense displeased look on her face as she walked into the classroom and chose a seat RIGHT by the window as far away from the front of the room.

If magic was might then Zoryn Spinnet wouldn't have to be here. And that was the real answer to the ambiguous board question.

Holmesian Feline 07-20-2017 11:40 PM

Joint History of Magic and Muggle Studies lesson.

Just a mite confusing since one was all about magical history and the other stuck to being non-magical right done to the writing utensils allowed. Not that Cassie thought muggle and magic couldn’t coexist just that it was an interesting combo of subjects in her mind as she made her way to the History of Magic classroom. “Good morning, Professor Stewart,” she greeted the woman whom was the first she met at the door. And a “Good day, Professor Newton,” followed as she stepped inside the room and took in the other woman at her desk.

Also interesting was the quote on the board. “Magic is…might,” she read quietly as she moved to take a seat. Hadn’t she read that from somewhere? The Ravenclaw mulled over the words as she set out her supplies, trying to think on them and what they had to do with...OH!

"Are we talking about the Second Wizarding World today, Professors?" she asked curiously.

Govoni 07-21-2017 12:30 AM

A JOINT lesson? Why yes, Olivia thought very much so!

Be-bopping into the History of Magic classroom, in a pretty great mood (and on some strong headache potions), the blonde smiled to those already assembled. She also tugged the earbuds out, having decided to keep them in until she got to class. All the chatter in the corridors echoed off the stone walls and reverberated in her skull. So, it was just best to block that all out. Never mind that it was a dangerous practice. Gryffindor, remember?

Anyway, the lion!lady was excited for a join lesson...and was hoping that she could actually participate in the magic for the day. It was NOT fun having to sit out on the sidelines.

Oh, goddess, and the quote written out on the chalkboard... This wasn't going to be a lesson that got her fired up, was it? Bless her head. "Professor Stewart......Professor Newton." Both subjects she enjoyed. And one's mostly without magic. So, she was excited.

SilverTiger 07-21-2017 12:55 AM

The idea of a joint lesson definitely seemed interesting to Stasya, especially since she was pretty certain after things like the pet party that the professors were friends. Plus, she was curious how Muggle studies was going to fit into History of Magic. Unless they were going to be talking about persecution, which definitely wasn’t on her top ten list of favorite subjects. But, she definitely liked both Professor Stewart and Professor Newton, so she had walked up to the History of Magic classroom with a smile on her face. Besides, there was lots to be happy about so she didn’t see why she should pretend not to be happy. At least, she didn’t think so until she’d gotten to the classroom and saw what was written on the board. That definitely sounded like a persecution thing.

“G’morning Professor Newton, g’morning Professor Stewart,” she said, still giving both professors a grin even though she was way more hesitant about if she was going to like this lesson. Still, she’d walked further into the classroom, claiming the seat right next to Liv even though she’d also given Noelle, Zoryn and even Kyle over by the window waves. Was he actually asleep?

“Hi Liv,” she said a little bit quieter than she’d greeted the professors. Plus, she got a big grin before the twelve-year-old had gone back to eyeing the words on the board.

Cassirin 07-21-2017 02:29 AM

Combined classes could be fun but they also sometimes mixed boring and slightly less boring subjects together. Or boring and interesting, which diluted the interesting... so. Katy was here and hoping for the best, but she was a realist. She might regret not taking some Pepper-Up before coming to class today.

"Good day, Professor and Professor." And the windows were open and it was a beeeeeeautiful day. Katy picked a chair right in the front and waved merrily at the professors. And then she saw the message on the board. Oh, mood killer. Mood killer right there. Magic is might was all kinds of loaded.

Daydreamer11 07-21-2017 02:56 AM

A joint class. Well at least putting History of Magic and Muggle Studies together seemed like a good combination. Shayla reached the classroom and was greeted right away. "Hello Professor Stewart", she said cheerfully. Then noticing her other co-teacher, Shay acknowledged her too. "Hello Professor Newton", she added with a smile.

With her eye on the nearest empty seat, Shay headed toward it. On the way she gave a wave to her Gryffindor housemate. "Hey Ava". Shay sat down in her seat and retrieved her needed supplies from her book bag. Pen, notebook, textbooks. Check, check and check. Then she finally turned to look at the board. "MAGIC IS MIGHT. Or is it? With a puzzled look, she tried to figure out what the statement meant. How would this relate to their lesson? She guessed she would have the answer soon.

Lady of Light 07-21-2017 03:02 AM

A joint lesson would be interesting, to say the least. Etta made her way to the classroom, feeling unusually happy and cheerful. It was just one of those days. And she was early to class too, which was a relief. A small smile on her face, she entered the room and greeted the professors first as her smile widened to a grin. "Hello, professors. Hope you're both doing well today."

She made her way to an empty seat near the middle of the classroom and sat down, noticing the words written on the board. Magic is might. Her smile faded as she tried to figure out what they'd actually be learning today. Uh.

Ava didn't mind muggle studies, but history of magic?

Yawn.

Why on earth these two subjects collaborated today?

She didn't history of magic AT ALL. Mostly on this class the Gryffindor would end up doing something to distract herself or just skipped it. She wanted to skip it but muggle studies was such a fun class and not attending it was kind of big miss (sort of). Nevertheless, Ava decided to attend it and hopefully she would not fall asleep in this clasroom. Hence why she had a big tumbler of coffee on her hand. "Professors," She slightly greeted both of them and decided to take a seat at the corner.

"Uh, hi Shay." She greeted her fellow lioness and back to sipping the caffeine liquid. Errrrrr... this was too bitter.

Charely Potter 07-21-2017 03:25 AM

History of Magic, check. Muggle Studies, check. Putting together, well it was seemingly obvious on what the topic would be.. But History itself was difficult to predict on which part they would be going over, it was a mystery at this point to Kirk. He arrived in the classroom, not tired for one, but not enthusiastic, just feeling.. Kirky. If that could be a word, "Heylo Professor Stewart." He greeted first as she was by the door before seeing the History teacher, "Heylo Professor Newton."

Now Kirk could choose a spot to sit. Somewhere near the window, he felt like letting the sun hit him as he stared at the board. MAGIC IS MIGHT. Or is it? He thought about his girlfriend making it in today.. It felt weird not being around Mel lately with her being sick, but he didn't mind getting her homework for her again incase today was no exception. He sighed lightly before turning to the nearest familiar face, ah, Etta. It had been a while since they spoke, "What do you think they'll have us do today?" There were a number of possibilities after all.

itsjustjesse 07-21-2017 03:48 AM

The potions had finally worked…that, and maybe it was more getting a potion from Healer Reed? Mel hadn’t had the time to really tell everyone she was going to be there but here she was. Practically RUNNING to the joint History of Magic and Muggle studies lesson…did it matter if she had to talk a lot?

Her voice well…it wasn’t really BACK but she’d gotten the okay to go to class. That was good…she wanted to do well for Gryffindor…and well for OWLs really. Sure, she liked that Kirk and Tenacius had been providing her with notes and homework but really…really, she wanted to be a part of it. To learn, to be there in the classroom interacting with everyone.

Mel looked up at the Professors and smiled – beamed really. Did she need a sign to say I’m not contagious – I just lost my voice because apparently that was all that had happened…she’d had one of those teeeeeeerrrible spring colds. Spring colds were the worst kind of colds they always seemed to hit her much stronger than any other cold ever…and this one, this one had hit her HARD to the point where she had just hidden out in the common room with cups upon cups of tea.

”Hey Kirk” she practically whispered, then turning to look at Etta Mel just grinned. Etta was cool – really, hello she was obviously cool she was Owlie’s bestie and Owlie was amaaaaazing. ”Hey Etta!” Mel grinned and looked around for other familiar faces. Everytime her eyes flicked to someone she knew she’d give them a small smile hello. Where was Lacy?

That nickname would stick forever…yep, he would never live that boat-party-massacre down…sure it wasn’t a massacre but it was sooooooooooo awkward – Hitchcock level awkward. ”Hello Professor Stewart, Professor Newton” she smiled brightly at the two of them her voice was low and timid as she spoke. Glancing over to Kirk she smiled ”I got the okay to go to classes – the rest helped…thanks for giving me notes and homework for classes” she smiled at him happily…right had she told him she was coming today? Probably not.

AlwaysSnapesGirl 07-21-2017 04:28 AM

Muggle Studies was a subject Rula found really interesting - even if she wasn't the greatest at it - but History of Magic...well, it wasn't her least favorite subject, at least. So this joint lesson would still be interesting probably!

"Hi, Professor Stewart and Professor Newton!" she greeted them with a bright smile, also pleased to note the open windows. It was finally getting warmer out there, so letting in the fresh air was definitely welcome.

As she took a seat near a window, she finally noticed the writing on the board. Hmmm, well that was a good clue about what their lesson was going to be about today. Definitely interesting.

PhoenixRising 07-21-2017 08:14 AM

If you ask Skylar, they should have done a joint lesson with one of the subjects that took place in the towers. And had the lesson take place down on the first floor, because then she for once wouldn't have to walk so far. She was rather intrigued though as to how History of Magic and Muggle Studies could be combined and it was so lucky that she liked Professor Newton's man person, because that reflected on her liking and trusting Newton. Even if Newton's lesson were usually drama induced. K Stewart, she was indifferent about, but her lessons were usually interesting.

Magic is might. The fourth year took note of the board upon entering the classroom. Well, if that wasn't a statement that would produce conflict? So much for hoping for a drama-free lesson. "Hello Professor Newton. Professor Stewart." She greeted, taking a seat near the back. She wanted a full view of the classroom, should drama unfold.

NifflerFan 07-21-2017 10:43 AM

This would be interesting. Emmeline sometimes liked both of these subjects, depending on what each particular lesson was about. They could be super boring or super interesting or somewhere in the middle. She was learning all about grey areas, uh huh. But the truth was that she would have come to this lesson even if it was on the history of flobberworms in the muggle word, 'cause Professor Stewart was teaching it. Since the other Professor Stewart had become her guardian a couple weeks ago, she figured she should support anyone in her new family. Plus, Professor Newton was super nice too.

"Hiii professors," she chirped as she passed them. Loads of people got smiles and waves, especially Mel, Zoryn, Miss Noelle, Miss Ava, and allll the other people she knew. Except Stasya and Miss Olivia 'cause she slid into the seat on Stasya's free side and shot both girls a grin. She was about to say hi when the sentence on the board snagged her attention and she shuddered. She was not a fan of the whole "magic is might" thing, nope. She really hoped nobody else was either, 'cause it sounded like the dumb "wizards are better than muggles" idea and that was scary.

Kimothy 07-21-2017 03:41 PM

Another joint Muggle Studies and History of Magic class? Hmm, that was rather interesting. And it was a good thing that it was being held at the History of Magic classroom, which was situated on the first floor. It was nearer the common room so Vivian was taking this opportunity to drag herself into class since there weren't much stairs involved.

Skipping into the classroom, Vivian poked her head inside and beamed at the Muggle Studies professor who was at the door. "Good day, Professor Stewart!" The blonde greeted the woman, then her eyes drifted over to the other professor. She, too, received a wide grin from the Slytherin. "Good day as well, Professor Newton!" Yup, she was in rather good spirits today. Wasn't this Fairfield child always in a bright mood?

Then she went over to flop on the seat beside Skylar. Also, aaahhhhh wasn't it cool today? Fresh air everywhere!

sweetpinkpixie 07-21-2017 04:30 PM

Derf was having an IT'S ABOUT TIME moment with this whole joint lesson thing. There had been loads of overlap or like...the POTENTIAL for it but you know. He was running just a little late and came skidding to a stop in the classroom after his wind spring down the corridor. "H-H-Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii...profes-s-sooooors," he huffed and puffed while using the sleeve of his robe to wipe his brown clean. Bright blues went to the board and read the words there. Well, that kinda left little to the imagination, yeah? Domination of muggles by the wizarding world? No thanks.

Chipper mood turned somber by the potential discussion ahead, Derf slipped into the nearest seat and hugged his enchanted suitcase to himself - chin resting on the handle - with an uncomfortable pout on his face.

Was there seriously ANYONE in this room who...believed in the ideal that that expression represented?

TakemetotheBurrow 07-21-2017 05:47 PM

sitting next to the big sis

"Hello Professors," Junia Botros greeted as she entered the classroom and gave her usual curtsy. The good weather had everything to do with her good mood and the smile she wore was genuine as she moved to find a seat.

Ru. The brunette spotted her older sister almost immediately in the crowded room and headed right for her. She was graduating soon, Rula was. On to bigger and better things and LEAVING Junia here to live up to the legacy the HEAD GIRL had left behind. NO PRESSURE or anything right?

Merlin.

"Hi." She wasn't going to bother the older girl or anything, she just wanted to be close while she still COULD be. There was something comforting about having your big sis around, after all. Particularly when you were going to be discussing such a dark part of history...

"Morning, Mr Forsfelle." Rosalyn smiled as she watched him take a seat and ask Miss Kramer what the lesson would be about.

SPOILER!!: Melbourne :)

Oh, There was Melbourne! Rosalyn was pleased to see the girl up and about again after being sick. It was wonderful what magic could do for healing. Muggles just didn't have it as easy when it came to this stuff; they had to rely on pills and soup. Though soup was pretty wonderful. "Morning, Miss Sorin-Ward! I am happy to see that you are doing better now."

"Morning, Miss Botros!" Rosalyn said giving the Head Girl a pleasant greeting. In a few more minutes the lesson would begin. After glancing at her watch, she turned her attention back to the door.

SPOILER!!: Skylar :)

Was it her or did Skylar seem a bit hesitant after glancing at what was written on the board? "Hello, Miss Diggory!" A smile was sent towards her.

SPOILER!!: Emmeline :)

It was nice to see Emmeline in such good spirits, but then that was to be expected given the turn of events that had unfolded for her. Really she couldn't be in better hands than Cami and it warmed her heart. "Hello, Miss Sparkes!"

SPOILER!!: Vivian :)

Oh, wow. Look at Vivian! Such a happy girl. It made Rosalyn even happier to see her students in such a good mood. Really she was usually cheerful. "Good day to you too, Miss Fairfield," she said as she returned the smile.

Annnnnnd it was about time to begin! There should only be one or two stragglers left at this point. One of which was an obviously out of breath Derfael. "Morning, Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne." Oh goodness. Looked like he wasn't thrilled at what had been written on the board.

SPOILER!!: Junia :)

Here was the last arrival. And a smile and curtsy as well! How wonderful. "Hello, Miss Botros!" Rosalyn said pleasantly as she watched her take a seat. It was time for them to begin!

Once they were sure that there were no stragglers and the door had been closed, Rosalyn got ready to address the class. She would be starting things off and then Kaysha would be continuing. Hopefully everything would be smooth sailing, though of course they were prepared for the possibility of things not going incredibly well. This was an important topic, however, and one that she DID enjoy talking about and one that she was happy to cover with her friend.

"Morning, everyone! Both me and Professor Stewart are happy to see you all in class today. I am sure that you have seen what is written on the board." As she spoke, she gestured to the words 'MAGIC IS MIGHT'. While loaded, there WAS a reason why this brief motto for the Ministry of Magic had been written down. "Starting off, I would like for you to tell us what you know about the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. Anything at all." Even if they only had a basic understanding of it, every bit of information was important. They wanted to know how aware the students were when it came to this topic.

OOC: Hello everyone! :) Me and Alicia are happy to see you all in class! As Rosalyn said, we want to know how much your character knows about the Statute of Secrecy. Any answer is fine even if it's something small! We will continue the lesson in 24 hours from now. Please note that any arrivals from now on will result in points loss, so it's better to just pretend that you have been here for the entire time.

Goblinfrog 07-21-2017 07:31 PM

"Hey Noelle," she said, smiling at her co-prefect. They weren't able to talk anymore after that because the class had began.

Kitty's mouth hung open. They were literally talking about the Statute! She'd been waiting for this moment for years, and now it was fabulously brought up by her two fav professors.

For a moment, the Goth felt like she couldn't breathe, it was just too much to take in. But then her hand snapped into the air and she began blurting things out.

"The Statute was established by the magical community centuries ago as a way to defend against witch burnings. At that time, Muggles feared magical people, so I suppose it made sense at the time to establish some way to avoid conflict. Basically the Statute forbid the Wizarding community from interacting magically with the Muggles, and in some extreme cases like in America, we were forbidden to even marry or have friendships with non-magical people. Under the Statute, magical people must suppress their true selves while in the presence of Muggles. We are even forbidden from sharing our advances in health with them, which I find to be EXTRODINARILY cruel. The Statute invariably leads us to think in terms of us vs. them. This has led to misplaced fear and hatred. I don't think monsters like Grindleward or Voldemort would have become nearly as popular as they were if the Statute hadn't been there to reinforce in people's minds that Muggles are to be feared. It is my view that the Statute be repealed."

She closed her eyes and waited for the rebukes of her classmates.

ArianaBlack 07-22-2017 02:50 AM

Dude. Whatever that badge-head was saying was putting Zoryn to SLEEP. Like uh, YAAAWWWWWWWN. Of course Zoryn Spinnet was trying VERY hard not to fall asleep 'cause last time she almost did, Professor Muggle Studies took away points. And despite the fact that Zoryn didn't care all that much about points, it still made her angry. 'Cause she didn't even technically do anything wrong!!!! She hadn't fallen asleep and that was the whole POINT.

So instead of ignoring the question like she wanted to, she raised her hand. To show that she was participating. Mhm. "We can't do magic in front of muggles," basically that was it. "And whatever she said," nodding to Kitty.

Mhm. Was that good? Was the lesson over already? THIS WAS TORTURE.

NifflerFan 07-22-2017 04:37 AM

Kitty

Uh oh, the first question of the day was about the Statute of Secrecy. Emmeline wished that Jessa was here again to tell Miss Ravenclaw Prefect just how wrong she was, but since she wasn't, Emmeline figured she might have to try. Except she couldn't really pay attention to Miss Ravenclaw Prefect's whole bit of talking, 'cause it was way too many words. Like almost teacher-length amount of words. She did catch the end of the prefect's rant though, and that seemed like maybe the most important bit?

Turning to Miss Ravenclaw Prefect, she frowned and replied: "But, Miss Prefect, those wizards didn't FEAR Muggles. They hated them and saw them as like like cockroaches or something icky. And there are STILL wizards and witches who think like that today." She remembered to raise her hand a bit too late -- oops -- and addressed the next words to the professors too: "The statue of secrecy is to protect Muggles from US just as much as it is to protect us from them. Besides, Muggles would probably still be super scared of us if they knew we existed." I mean, if she had been born with noooo magic at all, and then learned that there were people who could do like anything with magic? That would be super scary for her, mhm. Which is what led to the Burning Times in the first place, wasn't it? She was sure there was a way to help with Muggle healing and such without going as far as Miss Ravenclaw Prefect wanted to. Emmeline had no idea how they could do that, but then she was only a first year. There were loads and loads of grown ups who should find the best solution ever for this problem, yup.

WhittyBitty 07-22-2017 04:46 AM

It was no surprise that Kitty was the first one to speak up when the question was asked; Rosalyn hadn't expected anything different knowing how passionate the girl was when it came to this topic. Even if she didn't agree with her on repealing the Statute, it was nice to see how driven she was and how she stuck to it even if people opposed to her. It was rather admirable.

"Okay, wonderful job so far guys. Just please try to keep things to simple facts for now though. We don't want to start another heated debate like what happened in the lesson on House Founders." Feeling had been hurt and there had been a detention served. "This is an important part of our history and something that SHOULD be discussed, but let's not get heated." Just putting a stop to things before people started getting carried away. "Of course any further discussion about repealing the statute can be had later on after the lesson if anyone desires." She sent a smile towards Kay. Hopefully that should do the trick. It was nice to talk about these things, but not during class and not when fights started.

OOC: Great job so far, guys! I'll reply to things further in my next post. Keep the answers coming, Rosalyn just wanted to make sure that things didn't get carried away like last time. :)

RandomRaven 07-22-2017 05:37 AM

It didn't take a long time until the Professors started the lesson. The History of Magic Professor started asking them if they knew about International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. Bada bada bada.... and Kitty Valentine was the first one to speak up and gave a very perfect answer mentioning about how cruel the statute was because the wizards were not allowed to interact with the muggles even have a relationship with them. Ava knew how passionate the Ravenclaw prefect about something muggle-related and probably would fight for it until... Well, who knows.

But then Emmeline spoke up disagreeing Kitty's words. Oh my, this would be such an interesting debate and it would be such a big miss if she didn't pay attention about it. The Gryffindor took another sip of coffee and kept her ears and eyes opened for another possible debate. If only she had snack for... Wait, she did have some cookies in bag!

By the way, was there something that she needed to say about the statute? Nope.

sweetpinkpixie 07-22-2017 07:24 AM

Derf wasn't sure WHAT to say on the subject really...but it always seemed like the one Ravenclaw prefect - THE ONE WHO HAD ABANDONED HIM WHILE HE HAD BEEN UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A FREEZING CHARM ON THE EDGE OF THE FORBIDDEN FOREST MIND YOU - always wanted to get on her box of soap...or however that expression went...when they got on this topic. Which was alright with him as far as the second year was concerned. Everyone OUGHT to have something they felt passionate about.

"My dad us-sed to be the Department Head for the Department of Magical Accidents-s and Catastrophes-s," he shared once it was his turn to speak. "And this-s one time there was a HUGE thing with magical creatures-s getting loos-se and s-stuff...cosmetic tes-sting...and s-s-some crups-s got loose in muggle areas-s-s and it was a right dis-saster...like...muggles-s would think that crups-s-s, who...you know...don't LIKE muggles-s by nature...were jus-s-st rabid dogs-s-s and..." He paused to swallow. "....put them DOWN if the muggle dog catching people caught them thinking they were rabid s-s-since they would just ATTACK. " Again, it was in the creature's nature just like it was a bowtruckle to defend its Home Tree, you know? "So the Statute als-so protects-s creatures-s too."

PhoenixRising 07-22-2017 12:36 PM

And the lesson was starting, asking them about the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, something that the Ravenclaw Prefect was quick to jump on and offer her very passionate opinion about why it should be repealed. Something that Professor Newton, unlikely last time with the Founders discussion, was quick to dispute and calm the situation before it got out of control. Excellent control, but disappointment for her entertainment hour.

And to think she was about to see if she had any snacks to munch on while she listened to the debate, but now she supposed she ought to answer the question.

"It was first signed in 1689, but then officially established in 1692." During a time when witch burnings were very common, magic was seen as evil, so it was rather necessary for the protection of wizardkind and muggles and creatures, as Derf pointed out. Four hundred years later, after being in hiding, perhaps it was time to repeal it or ... perhaps not. As what Kitty failed to realize with her passion was that there was some idiotic people out there. People who would ruin it from them all. None of which Skylar would say, because Professor Newton didn't want their opinion about if it should be repealed or not; she just wanted to know what they knew about it.

Daydreamer11 07-22-2017 01:35 PM

Shay was watching her classmates arrive when the lesson was called to order. She turned her attention to the professor, as she began to speak. It looked like History of Magic would be up first in this joint lesson. Annnnd the International Statute of Wizading Secrecy was the topic of the day. When the first question was posed and the answers started coming in, Shay thought that it might become yet another very heated discussion. Not that the occasional debate was unwelcome..........it was just that Hogwarts students sometimes took things to another level entirely. Anyway, the professor stepped in and shut it down before it could even begin.

Shay thought of her answer, then raised her hand to respond. "Each country's Ministry of Magic equivalent is responsible for keeping their own magical population hidden from muggles.......or they will face consequences." That was stating it simply. There were so many things involved in keeping wizards hidden. No magic in front of muggles, keeping the magical creatures hidden, camouflaging wizarding schools and on and on.

Govoni 07-22-2017 04:42 PM

Grinning happily at Stasya, because HER ickle, Olivia leaned over and have the girl a quick snuggly hug. Oh, and her other ickle, Emmeline. Offering a little wave, she went about getting out her notebook and pen. Did you see, Professor Stewart? No Quick Quotes today. Though, it definitely did make things more difficult, since she struggled with splitting her focus. Ugh, concentration issues could be a pain. Here was to trying, though.

With class officially beginning, she settled in to start on her notes. Liv typically liked to answer after everyone else did, so that she could make sure to offer up something original and unique. The girl loathed repeating anyone else's answers. But of course, as she always did, Kitty Valentine happened. Rubbing at her forehead, feeling the pressure on her brain, Olivia sighed. Before she could rebuke, however, Emmeline had been there with...talking sense. That earned an approving nod.

Just one thing, though...

"Ignorance is real, on both sides of this. Fanatics are dangerous and well-hidden." That was all she'd say. For now, unless Kitty wanted to get into it, which Olivia wouldn't shy away from. As was their way in this lessons. The blonde didn't know what it was about History of Magic that seemed to bring out the heated debates and discussions, but Liv was here for it. Should the need present itself. "If any of our kind chooses to interact with muggles, they'd need to dress the part. Blend in." So, that meant no robes or pointy hats, har har. "Though, I think this has become less of an issue over time. Fashion seems to always be universal." There was a brief pause before she quickly added, "And it has to be climate!appropriate. Nothing that would indicate that a witch or wizard has charmed themselves to keep warm or dry. Or whatever."

Erindipity 07-22-2017 05:00 PM

Statute of Secrecy, huh? Dora had a lot she could say about it, but she opted to keep mum for the moment. The Gryffindor had no desire to debate with anyone. Especially when most everyone was close minded and refused to even entertain the idea that they may be wrong... But hey whatever. What was it that she knew to be fact?

Skylar offered the date it was signed and such...

Really, Dor was cool with just listening for the moment. MOST of her classmates weren't ignorant. Most.

WhittyBitty 07-22-2017 05:34 PM

Having said her piece about avoiding heated debate (though she was sure that there were those who would have enjoyed the chaos), Rosalyn felt ready to address the class further.

And really she was pleased that there were students who knew so much about the Statute. "Great job everyone! I'm not going to go into TOO much detail about the statute, but I WILL elaborate a bit on the history of it. As Miss Diggory mentioned, it was signed in 1689 but wasn't properly established until 1692." Were they writing this stuff down? They never could know when dates would be important when it came to her lessons. Really they should be taking notes in general.

"As Miss Valentine mentioned, it was first brought about in response to persecution that witches and wizards faced. It was felt that offering muggles help at that point in time would be a death sentence." Rightly so seeing the amount of magical folks who were killed by muggles because of their magical abilities. "While there WERE those who managed escape, there were some who weren't as lucky. They had their wands stripped." One notable witch in her opinion was Wendelin the Weird who actually allowed herself to be caught 47 times because she used the Flame-Freezing Charm and actually enjoyed the tickling sensation that was produced when muggles tried to burn her! Crazy stuff. "Remember that the catalysts for the magical community for wanting something to be done were: the increase of witch burnings - including innocent muggles, persecution of wizarding children by muggles, and muggles who wanted magic performed for them to help them out, on top of being taught how to use magic."

Rosalyn paused for a moment before continuing. "The Ministry of Magic attempted to liaise with the muggle monarchs in charge of Britain at that time - William III and Mary II - through a special Ministry Delegation, but their attempt at gaining magical protection under muggle law failed." Something that she was sure that not too many people knew about. "You could say that was the straw that broke the camel's back, and as Miss Spinnet and Miss Morrison both mentioned, when the statute was put into effect we weren't allowed to perform magic in front of muggles." Something that should NEVER be repealed. Of course this was only simple terms, but nonetheless it was a good way of stating things. "This is why a number of magical villages came about. With the two societies alienated, witches and wizards joined together to create their own communities, and they were attracted to small villages and hamlets." One notable example of this was Godric's Hollow.

"Though of course we should keep in mind what Miss Sparkes has said about the Statute being in place to protect muggles as well. Think of the Death Eaters for example! Even with the statute in place they performed cruel acts on muggles. Imagine how much worse it would have been if there was no Statute in place. Miss Phillips is spot on with her comment about ignorance and fanatics." While there were certainly ones who wouldn't have cared about laws put in place, there were others who DID care about that - the Malfoys were a notable example. Anyway, Rosalyn wasn't going to elaborate on the muggle aspect because that was for Kaysha as the Muggle Studies expert!

One final thing, though. "I'm glad that Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne mentioned magical creatures, because that is an important part of the statute as well. They fall under Clause 73, which was enacted in 1750. This is why we have to be VERY careful of magical creatures around muggles and why incidents involving muggles and magical creatures have to be dealt with. Think about all the dragon incidents that have occurred." Of course that was only one example.

At any rate that was her part done. Time for her to hand things over to Kaysha. "Now we shall hear more about things from Professor Stewart."

All yours, Kay!

OOC: Thanks for all the great answers, guys! I tried to include everything into my post. Sorry if I missed something; that wasn't intentional. :)

Ali will be moving us along at around 11:00 pm EST. Catch up posts are welcome as always! ^_^

Charely Potter 07-23-2017 01:41 AM

semi-catchup

Before class began Kirk had waited for class to start, he had occasionally turned to the door at the sound of footsteps. It was a natural curious thing, to see who else was arriving before going back to his own business. Well, until his girlfriend came in. He felt relieved through his nearly blank-slated expression, his eyes betrayed his secret relief though. He greeted her the usual way expressing to her his current thoughts when she sat. A pleasant surprise wasn't enough to describe it.

So.. that first question about the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy.. Was there really anything else to express about it that wasn't covered by others already? Well, maybe there was but Kirk didn't quite see any other reasoning. He knew it was quite a secret and it was the main reason Muggle didn't know anything about magic outside their imagination. He knew it happened a looong time ago. So with that he was tempted to just kick back in his chair and just let things go the way it was.. But he had his notebook already out and decided to jot a few things instead. It would be useful on their next exam.

*scribble, scribble*

Statute.. good.. Death Eaters... bad...

*scribbles actual notes from Professor Newton*

After that Kirk casually began doodling the nearest star a number of light-years away. Oh? He raised his head up to hear Miss Stewart.

Goblinfrog 07-23-2017 02:57 AM

mentions of a few people xd

The comment from Zoryn was rather adorable, and Kitty smiled to herself when she said it. Kitty never got the impression that Zoryn liked History of Magic or Muggle Studies (though she'd never heard her say she didn't like them, it was just a hunch), so it was unlikely that she was really agreeing with her statement on repealing the Statute - but it was cute that she said it.

Then Emmeline very politely (even calling her Ms. Prefect) disagreed with her. Kitty was about to open her mouth to respond when Professor Newton brought the debate to a halt. Crestfallen and a little disappointed, the Ravenclaw prefect simply nodded and began scribbling notes of the information Rose was telling them.

Olivia's comment about ignorance on both sides made her want to respond, but she didn't want to get in trouble for continuing the debate. Instead and she just gave the Gryffindor a curious look.

She sat down at the front row and read the message on the board. "Hello Professor Newton," she said as she mentally wondered if they were about to have a super interesting debate about magic.

It was no surprise to Kay that the first student to be present was Kitty. She was greeted by a warm smile. “Hello, good morning, Ms Valentine. Quite well, thank you for asking. Marshmallow would like you to have a play date with her again.’’ The crup was quite fond of the Ravenclaw.

"Good morning professors" She said before pulling a few things out to get ready for class.

“Good morning to you too, Ms Summers,’’ Kay said airily. “I hope we’re going to have to duel each other again.’’ She had rather enjoyed their duel and thought that Roderick had gotten a brilliant idea for student/staff duels.

My, my. Zoryn looked rather annoyed. “Good morning, Ms Spinnet.’’ This was a rather cheerful greeting as she aimed to try to put a smile on the Gryffindor’s face. “Don’t look so dismayed. This will be a lesson that you’ll enjoy. You’ll get to voice your opinions.’’

“Good morning, Ms McNally!’’ Kay was very pleased to see that the kiddos were trekking in early. She’d have hated to get started and a some of them were late. “Go on, grab yourself a seat.’’ She added a nod in response to Rose’s answer to the question.

This was someone Kay knew who always looked forward to lessons especially Muggle Studies. The woman was no less pleased to see her. “Hello, Ms Phillips!’’

The grin was returned. “Good morning, Ms Dalgaard-Volkova!’’
I trust that you’re well.’’ That grin had said it all, actually, and she felt Stasya’s had been genuine.

Uh.

“Hello, Ms Burton!'' She peered curiously at the tumbler. “Coffee?’’ Kay could smell the aroma now and was reminded of a certain former CoMC professor.

Kirk too got a broad smile. “Hello, Mr Forsfelle. Find yourself a seat, we’ll be getting started in a few minutes.’’

Seeing Melbourne approach, Kay immediately gathered that she was feeling better. “Hello, Ms Sorin- Ward. I’m really pleased to hear that.’’ It was so sweet of Mel to thank them like that. “You’re quite welcome. Now, I hope you won’t get sick again.’’ Blue eyes twinkled with humour.

Kay looked to her watch. Just a few more minutes and Rose would get started. She directed her attention back to the corridor. “Ah, hello, Ms Botros!’’

“Hello, Ms Diggory.’’ She too got a smile. By now, Kay hadn’t even bother to stop smiling. There were more kiddos behind Skylar. She ushered the girl to go find a seat.

This adorable kiddo was someone she had grown to be fond of over the entire school year. It was needless to say Kay was pleased to see her. “Hello, Ms Sparkes!’’ Yes, she did call her by her first name but that was only when they were spending time together.

“We should get started soon, Rose,’’ Kay said quietly to Rose just as Derf came to a halt in the room. Poor dear. He had obviously ran all the way to the classroom. “Hello, Mr Ashburry- Hawthorne! You’re just in time.’’

Junia had such a nice habit. It was the curtsy that Kay was referring to. She gave her signature smile in return. “Hello, Ms Botros. You too are just in time.’’

* * * * * * *

Kay was the one to carefully shut the class’s door once she was sure the corridor was clear. As Rose got started, she casually leaned against the desk. Her time would come soon enough to contribute to the lesson. As it was, she listened to her best friend spoke then waited for the reactions of the students.

It came to her as no surprise that is was Kitty who spoke first and who had the most to say. Kay knew a lot about her and how fond she was of muggles. Hence, it was understandable that she put forth so much information. The others too, had their bit to say and it made her proud as always to see just how much they knew.

Now it was her time to move the lesson along. The woman moved from the desk to the front of the class. “Thank you, Rose. Now, I’m very pleased to see just how much you all know about the Statute. It is a very crucial part of our world. However, over the course of the years, there have been witches and wizards who have opposed this Statue. None has been more prominent than Carlotta Pinkstone.’’ And here, Kay couldn’t help but wonder if the name Kitty Valentine would join Carlotta’s and the others. “Has any of you come across her name? Does anyone know anything about her?’’ Surely a few of them must. Carlotta was featured on the back of Chocolate Frog cards after all.

“For those of you who are not familiar with Carlotta, can you tell us what are your opinions on the Statute. Should we keep to ourselves? Should we reveal ourselves? Kindly remember to keep your responses respectable; do not attack anyone for their opinions.’’ This was a tricky topic, she knew and this is why she and Rose would be vigilant to the answers that would be pouring in.

OOC: Hiii! My next reply will come in 24 hours! Don’t sweat it if you can’t reply in time because you can always play catch up! :3

Zoryn was already bored. Though, when she thought a debate was about to break out her head did perk up JUST A BIT. But OF COURSE the Professors had to ruin any chance of good entertainment. Zoryn was highly disappointed. So she sat and stared off into space for a little bit.

She did snap back into reality when a new question was posed, but it wasn't actually until after the question was posed when she came back to reality. So uh, what was the question again?

Something about the statute, she was sure.

Were they seriously still talking about this?

Also, when were they gonna talk about how the two subjects were actually related? 'Cause History of Magic and Muggle Studies were definitely two very unrelated things.

Though.... Maybe she would've known why if she had been paying attention? Naaaaaaaaaah.

Charely Potter 07-23-2017 03:48 AM

Sure, Kirk recognised the name from one of his batches of chocolate frogs. He couldn't remember all the details though on the back... Until the Professor mentioned the Statues. It peeked a bit of flashback on some of the card's details in his head now.

"She challenged the Statute, that I know. I can't imagine throwing spells everywhere without upsetting enough people who couldn't do it like her." Seemed unfair either way whatever the solution. So what else could he say without spinning in circles? He looked thoughtful at some ideas in his head again.

Goblinfrog 07-23-2017 03:49 AM

Kitty perked up. So they were going to discuss repealing the statute after all? Perfect! She raised her hand.

"Carlotta Pinkstone was the most famous advocate for repealing the Statue of Secrecy. She was born in 1922 and attended Hogwarts when Professor Dippett was headmaster. She was imprisoned many times for her activism, but this never dampened her strong will and passion for justice. Someday I hope to continue where she left off. She is one of my heroes."

Here she stopped to take a break for air. Whew! Then she went on to answer the second question:

"The Statute was needed a long time ago, but now I believe it is just a vehicle of oppression, both for us and for Muggles. It is oppressive to us because it forces us to suppress our true selves and it punishes us for being open with our neighbors. It is oppressive to Muggles because it keeps them in the dark and prevents them from getting the best medical cures available, since we can't use magic to help them. Of course there are some bad Muggles and some bad wizards, but why should all of us have to suffer because of them? If we are honest with ourselves, then we would know that teaching that Muggles are to be feared will only lead to more intolerance."

itsjustjesse 07-23-2017 03:50 AM

Mel smiled up at Professor Newton as she greeted her. ”Thank you Professor Newton! I’m glad to be here” she smiled brightly at the history of magic Professor. The question that came up made Mel wince – she knew, knew that this could start issues. It always seemed to.

The way that Professor Newton said she didn’t want a heated debate just made Melbourne sigh. Thank merlin she grinned to herself as she listened to everyone’s insightful ideas. Like Dora Mel didn’t need to speak or to bring up anything about the utter mess that this class could become. Still when Professor Newton began to speak she immediately responded not by speaking but by note taking.

It was when Kirk greeted her that Mel couldn’t help but beam at him. Glancing over at Kirk she just raised an eyebrow as he started doodling and grinned…she’d have to pester him about seeing his sketches and doodles later. He was always to good at them. Professor Stewart got a GIANT grin when she welcomed her back to the class. ”I hope so too Professor, and I doubt that I will. I’ve been making sure to get regular sleep” she explained with a grin…and that was when she heard the question.

Raising her hand the Gryffindor girl just grinned brightly. ”Miss Pinkstone, if I do remember was born around 1922 and is noted as being an activist that campaigned for the lifting of the statute of secrecy” she grinned and sent a look over to Kitty wondering if she would speak up herself.

NifflerFan 07-23-2017 04:10 AM

various mentions

As soon as Professor Newton told them not to be debating and stuff, Emmeline made a "zipping her lips" motion and then flashed the history professor an apologetic smile. She thought Miss Ravenclaw Prefect was wrong about some things, but she didn't want to hurt the older girl's feelings or anything. She noticed Miss Olivia's nod and grinned at her too.

All of her smiles faded as soon as Derf started talking. His story about the crups was super, way too sad for the first year. She couldn't help thinking of Sirius, all grown up and sneaking out into a nearby Muggle area and getting caught by the vicious dog catchers and--

Emmeline gulped. She knew that if Professor Wayland let her adopt Sirius, it would be up to her to make sure that he was never, ever around Muggles. Crups couldn't help hating Muggles, after all. She wasn't sure why Muggles had dog catchers anyway, but she couldn't really blame them for picking up what they thought were mean dogs either. It was a super, super sad situation all around, mhm. She hadn't thought about the statute protecting creatures before, but now that she thought about it, of course it did. Even some wizards were scared of some magical creatures, so of course they had to keep them away from Muggles. To keep the creatures AND Muggles safe, mhm.

Thinking about crups and stuff had caused the first year to pretty much zone out through the rest of Professor Newton's talking. It was a biiiig effort to zone back in when Professor Stewart started her talking. She didn't know who Carlotta Pinkstone was, but she had a pretty name. Maybe Miss Ravenclaw Prefect looked up to her or something? Emmeline liked some Great Witches and Wizards from the past too. She didn't know anything about the Pinkstone lady, and she'd already told her opinion about the statute earlier, but she raised her hand anyway 'cause she wanted to see what Professor Stewart thought: "I think the statute thingy needs to stay in place to keep everybody safer from each other and creatures too and stuff. But but, Miss Ravenclaw Prefect is right and we should try to help Muggles too." Muggles were people too, and Emmeline felt bad for them 'cause they hadn't been born with magic for some reason. She wondered why only SOME people were born with magic, and scribbled the question down in her notes. She'd ask Professor Stewart after the lesson maybe.

PhoenixRising 07-23-2017 04:50 AM

Wait, wait, hadn't Professor Newton told them to NOT talk about opinions on whether they should be repealing the statute or not? And now Professor Stewart was asking for their opinions??? Well she was asking about Carlotta Pinkstone, but also for their opinions. And this was just quite the contradictory lesson thus far, which on some level made sense since muggles versus wizardkind was like a walking contradiction.

Of course, Kitty would perk up again at the chance to offer her very opinionated side to why the statute should be repealed. And if she had to guess, Carlotta was probably the older girl's idol. She could see the headlines now: "Kitty Valentine: the NEW Pinkstone" Or maybe, "A new activist in sight: Kitty Valentine". Whatever. It wasn't her life and as long as the Prefect didn't try to jeopardize anything in her life, she could care less what she got her hands into.

She should probably say something, yes?

Not having anything to add about Carlotta, Skylar chose to add her opinions, "I think that while society has come a long way in the last four hundred years, there are still a lot of prejudiced folk out there. On both sides, muggles and magical folk. And before we can even consider repeals of statutes, or of revealing our true selves, there needs to be greater education and compassion." Yes, some might argue that you won't get education without proof, but ... "Sharing our secret means that muggles would want to know everything. And I don't think as a wizarding community we should have to reveal everything because we would be putting our own lives in danger. Some things are better left in the dark. We could still help muggles with medicinal cures, without telling them how to do it, I'm not saying to let muggles suffer... but we just don't have to spill the secrets. We can integrate, without revealing. There's no reason to tell them the how."

Lady of Light 07-23-2017 12:05 PM

Etta neatly noted down what was being said, careful not to miss anything. She'd need all of the study material for OWLs after all.. OWLs. They were just around the corner but she felt like she wasn't prepared at all. And the panic was starting again. She took deep breaths and concentrated on what was being discussed in class, not wanting to stress about exams at the moment. Wrong time. Okay.. so what was the question again? Right. Carlotta Pinkstone. She raised a hand to answer.

"From what I've read, she was very keen on integrating the magical and muggle communities as well.. right? And I personally think the Statute is needed.. or necessary to maintain peace and stability between both the communities because completely mixing them might.. result in conflict or a difference of opinion."

lemon 07-23-2017 01:19 PM

Nicholas certainly had an opinion on the question posed, but the last bit of the professor's statement caught his ear. Respect others' opinions? Honestly, HOW was he supposed to do that while giving his own unfiltered one?

It was impossible. He'd have to sit this out.

So, the Hufflepuff listened in silence to his classmates' answers and judged everybody who was thinking WRONG.

Daydreamer11 07-23-2017 01:28 PM

As her classmates gave their answers and Professor Newton discussed the topic, Shay took notes. She tried her best to keep up with the conversation, writing down the key points as they went along. Then it was Professor Stewart's turn to tie in the Muggle Studies part of things. And a two part question was on the floor. The first one was pretty straightforward. The second one, well that was a matter of opinion and that was something that her classmates had no shortage of.

Shay raised her hand and when she was called on, she added her two cents to the conversation. "Carlotta Pinkstone spent some time in Azkaban because she repeatedly did magic in front of muggles. She believed that it was the right thing to do. Whether you agree with her or not, I guess you have to admire her for standing up for what she believed." Shay did not necessarily agree with the woman, but she could see where she was coming from........which led to her next answer.

"As for the Statute........I think in a perfect world, it would be great if we could repeal it. Wizards and muggles living together in harmony." Shay, however, was not so naive as to believe that this was possible in today's world. When had she become so jaded? "Outside of Hogwarts, I live in the muggle world and right now, I don't see that happening. Some muggles today aren't completely accepting of muggles of other races, religions and cultures. How can we think that they will be accepting of us? I also think that some wizards aren't quite ready to accept muggles either. Someday maybe the statute won't be necessary, but today? I don't think that's the case." Someday.

sweetpinkpixie 07-23-2017 03:25 PM

Clause 73, right. That was a number that he actually remembered. Then again it was easier to remember things when it involved creatures. Selective memory and what not. Jotting down just a few notes since nothing they were discussing was reaaaaaally anything not found in pages in his textbook, Derf looked up when Professor Stewart spoke.

Oh boy...here we go again...

Derf was tempted to just stick his fingers in his ear and hum loudly to ignore the arguing that was likely to come like last time. Huh, they had been talking about the Statute a lot...hadn't they? Hmmm...

As for Carlotta Pinkstone...well...Derf had three chocolate frog cards of her in his collection and he had read over the information several times but nothing really stuck. No offense to the woman or anything, she just wasn't someone who his mind thought particularly memorable. "She went to Hogwarts too," he offered lamely. There. Fact shared.

As for his opinion on the whole Statute...well...if it helped keep creatures safe he was rather content. "I think...it's kinda scary how his-storically those that have wanted to repeal it have been kinda...extreme...acted extremely, you know?" Like the lady they were talking about. She ended up in Azkaban for Newt's sake! "Like...The Cult of Walpurgis...Grindelwald...dunno...it kinda paints a not so good image of what our world would be like if it were gone..."

This lesson started to get boring, really. Maybe because she just had no idea what they were talking about, huh. Ava had ever heard about Carlotta Pinkperson or whatever her last name was, but it's just from the chocolate frog card. Nothing else. And also, she didn't really want to give an opinion about the statute because... 1) This was one of those moments where Ava would rather to kept her mouth shut to avoid saying something that clearly, she didn't understand and 2) She just didn't want to. Either Ava didn't have interest in History stuffs because she failed her OWL or she failed her OWL because she didn't have interest in History at all.

Luckily that she chose to sit on the corner so... The Gryffindor rested her head on the desk and avoided the discussion. Lalalalala~ Just keep swimming discussing and don't mind her at all.

The Statute was very important to Viv. Being Muggle-born, she could never perform magic unless in the case of an emergency. She raised her hand and said "There was Harry Potter when he saved his cousin Dudley against those ghastly Dementors! Also, Carlotta campaigned for the Ministry to lift up the Statute. I think the Statue is important. I am a Muggle-born and magic should not be presented in front of muggles."

So she had a good guess but wasn’t going to get a yes or no confirmation on what the class had to deal with, at least from Newton out of the two professors. Nope…Professor Stewart seemed to agree. Fine by Cassie, she and the rest of the students in today’s class would find out soon enough. And soon enough the lesson was begin with brief attention brought to the three words on the board before Professor Newton Asked about the Statute of Secrecy. Right off the bat, Kitty gave a pretty thorough explanation concerning the legislation that played such an everyday yet important part in the wizarding world. Though the prefect went further, stating how she felt the Statute should be repealed.

Uh oh…Cass thought as a first year Gryffindor spoke up in defense. She knew from her father’s stories how topics like this could become quite heated. Thankfully Newton stepped in to try and keep it a calm discussion which seemed to work well enough. There was still plenty else to speak of on the matter though the Ravenclaw wasn’t quite sure what she could add. Another young Gryffindor’s, Derfael if she caught it correctly, words caught her attention however.

Used to head Accidents and Catastrophe? Did he work with her father?

Right…she needed to just pay attention to what was being said, catching anything she wasn’t readily aware of. Both known and unknown being caught and written into her notes. History of her world and all. The mention of Deatheaters brought Cass back to her original thoughts on a connection to the war or wars with Voldemort. When the debate on the Statute was reopened, the fifth year braced herself. Kitty remained adamant and a few others followed. However there was a decent amount that thought that while it would be great if it could be repealed , it wasn’t ideal.

And then there was Derfael again…mentioning the Cult of Walpurgis!

She remembered that, reading from something she might not have supposed to be privy too from her father’s past. The fight that ended just before she herself had been born. “Pinkstone favored appealing the Statute of Secrecy. I feel at the most, perhaps amendments might be made to adjust certain strictures.” Like the ones pertaining to relationships and muggleborn families.

The Ravenclaw prefect got some serious eye-rolling, but Katy had learned her lesson. In this very classroom, actually. Besides, other people were allowed to share their opinions, no matter how wrong, and they were allowed to have heroes who were nothing more than rabblerousers, if they couldn't find someone respectable to admire.

So. Katy raised her hand. "Professor...s. Carlotta Pinkstone chose to oppose the Statute by actively breaking it, and she was imprisoned several times for her efforts. She sort of cared more about her agenda than about who she hurt, since the Muggles who witnessed her lawbreaking had to be bespelled to lose that memory. Who knows what else they lost? It was pretty selfish of her." The one thing she knew about a cause was that it was never more important than the people stepped over along the way. And this was from a particularly self-involved Toussaint.

As for the Statute... "And I agree with Ms. Morrison. In a perfect world, we wouldn't have to protect ourselves from Muggles. Everyone's better nature would prevail. In practice, though, no one's better nature is prevailing. We still require society that is separate and hidden from those who would persecute and subjugate us for our differences."

It was impossible. He'd have to sit this out.

So, the Hufflepuff listened in silence to his classmates' answers and judged everybody who was thinking WRONG.

Based on previous lesson trends, Kay had made it her priority today to keep an eye on Zoryn. She was not surprised to see the Gryffindor becoming spaced out as time went along. “Ms Spinnet. If you would please pay attention? You could miss vital information for your own knowledge not to mention exams.’’

Yes, she also did notice the other silent ones. Not expecting them to answer every single question posed, she did expect them to make careful notes.

"She challenged the Statute, that I know. I can't imagine throwing spells everywhere without upsetting enough people who couldn't do it like her." Seemed unfair either way whatever the solution.

Shay did not necessarily agree with the woman, but she could see where she was coming from........which led to her next answer.

“Excellent! You are all correct. Carlotta was indeed born in 1922. She was a rather powerful witch, capable of wandless magic. She would purposely use magic in public and in the presence of muggles. This lead her to be convicted and sentenced to time in Azkaban multiple times.’’

Kay moved back to Rose’s desk where she picked up a card. It was just not any card but one displaying Carlotta. She held it up for the class to catch a glimpse. “I am certain many of you have seen Carlotta’s card but in case you haven’t… as you can see, she’s pictured with her hands in shackles while still doing magic.’’ Wandless magic, mnd you.

Kay appreciated all of their opinions and told the class so. “As it currently stands, the Statute must be upheld. We are not in anyway to reveal ourselves to Muggles. Ever.’’ The last word was stressed upon. “Like all decisions made, they can be protested but must be done so peacefully. Those of you who mentioned that we should help Muggles when we can, this is right. We must but I repeat, we can never reveal our abilities to them.

''There are other reasons, aside from the ones mentioned, as to why many argue we should remain a secret: Muggles would be afraid of us and try to harm us. This was the case of Lisette de Lapin in 1422 though she managed to escape. Witch burning, persecution of wizarding children and attempts by muggles to force witches and wizards to perform magic are also included. Keep in mind that the world has evolved a great deal now and the incidents I speak of occurred a very long time ago. In addition, not all muggles thought the negative way that others would have.’’
While it would seem that Muggles were the villains, Kay would not try to hide the facts of what happened so many years ago. She was all for everyone living in harmony even if they could not reveal who they really were.

“The quote on the board...’’ Kay inclined her head towards it. “Was used by the Ministry of Magic while it was in control by Voldemort during the years 1997 and 1998. Simply put, what it meant was that Muggles were inferiors to witches and wizards. The point that I’m trying to put across is that in both worlds, there will be some who want all the power or who will want the power over everyone else. Whether the Statute should be lifted will always remain a debate but it is not one that we will have.’’

Right. It was time that they move on. “Does anyone has any questions? If not, we shall move onto today’s activity.’’

OOC: :doof: We’ll get started on the activity in about 24 hours!

ArianaBlack 07-24-2017 04:03 AM

WHAT THE HECK???

There were DEFINITELY other people who didn't contribute to the lesson yet either and they weren't called out for it. Honestly, she just came out for a good time and suddenly she was feeling sooOOooOOoo attacked. Unfair. Truly. Y'know how Professors could have favorites? Professor Stewart clearly had an UNfavorite. And it was Zoryn.

Not that the girl minded all that much 'cause to be fair, Muggle Studies was her most UNfavorite class.

And no, she did not have any questions. Well, aside from 'when will this lesson be over?' but she figured that one wouldn't be taken to very well. So instead, she stayed quiet.

Lady of Light 07-24-2017 12:24 PM

Um. WOW. That was a lot of information. Etta sighed, her mind wandering once again. Yes, OWLs. Muggle Studies wasn't really that bad, honestly.. or even History of Magic. One just needed to remember a lot of details but that was it. She was more worried about Ancient Runes and Arithmancy, though. Those were subjects she wasn't really good at and there wasn't enough time to have someone help her..

Questions? Nope. No questions at all. But she did write down what was being said.. at least, note down all the super important things. She set her quill back on the table, pushing the thought of exams out of her mind and wondered what activity the professor had in mind. Hopefully, something really fun.

sweetpinkpixie 07-24-2017 12:49 PM

Derf kept quiet for a moment, a THOUGHT very VERY loud in his head and making his eyes wander around the classroom and eventually falling on Etta for a moment. He hadn't actually talked to anyone about the tasks specifically...and he spent the majority of them hiding away with Abey because the tasks themselves could be triggering to his Gryffindor...but he had heard rumors and gossip. This WAS Hogwarts after all, you know? Nothing stayed secret for long.

Which was why he was SURE his exposing of the Charms professor as a werewolf was just around the corner. And all the hags on staff. And the professor Dark lords.

Swallowing, Derf timidly raised his hand. "Profes-s-ssors?" he asked meekly. "Haven't...um...haven't some of the tasks of this tournament thingy...um...haven't they KINDA been the embodiment of...magic is might?"

itsjustjesse 07-24-2017 04:19 PM

Melbourne’s eyebrows knitted together as she took notes for the class. As it currently stands…that almost made Mel question what Professor Stewarts true opinions on the statute were. Was she deluded into thinking that muggles would simply open their arms welcomingly to the magical folks that seemed to have it easier than those…well, without magical abilities? Was she one of those that thought that muggles were suppressed and that witches and wizards’ did all that they could to oppress those who couldn’t wield magic upon command? Or well, upon the proper use of words and intent.

Melbourne looked over to Zoryn when she was called out. In a hushed tone she muttered to the girl, ”hey…um…do you want to borrow my notes?” after all Mel didn’t like when people were called out and made to feel well…bad about things?

Derf’s question just made Mel grin.

Heck yeah kiddo they so were.

”I have to say that I agree with Derfael…” Melbourne spoke only moments after raising her hand. ”after all the first task did deal with muggles…or people that we were lead to believe were muggles and dementors.”

NifflerFan 07-24-2017 05:37 PM

Emmeline shot Zoryn a sympathetic look. She hadn't been the only one being quiet, but the first year supposed that Professor Stewart was on the extra look out for Zoryn's zoning out 'cause she zoned out in Muggle Studies once before maybe.

She didn't have too much time for distractions though 'cause now Professor Stewart was talking a lot and Emmeline's attention was absorbed in frantically scribbling down notes. She put down her quill in relief when the professor asked if they had any questions; paying attention properly AND taking good notes was super hard. And then, Derf asked a super good question and Mel backed him up. And Emmeline was super glad that there was finally a lesson where they could talk about how evil and wrong the tournament tasks had been so far. She wasted zero time in raising her hand and adding on, "Derf is sooo right. And and, they kidnapped a poor little Muggle boy for the last task. Doesn't that like, really mess up Muggle relations? That kid and his parents will hate magic forEVER now, and I heard he's Miss Valerie's cousin. Which is sooo messed up 'cause now her own family will probably be all scared of her if not WORSE. How come they're allowed to do all this stuff? We shouldn't be allowed to mess with Muggles and put their kids in super danger just 'cause we can wipe their memories and stuff." Yup, the last task had been by far the worst in terms of cost to the champions and victims in Emmeline's opinion.

Goblinfrog 07-24-2017 07:10 PM

Katy, and then joining in the tournament debate

Kitty felt admiration for several of her classmates when they said that they thought there should be a way to cure Muggles, even if they supported the Statute While she herself wanted the Statute completely repealed, she could appreciate and welcome their concern for at least one part of the Statute.

But Katy's attacks on her hero Carlotta made her want to cover her ears and start humming. Of course she didn't do that, but she could feel her anger levels rising as Katy accused Carlotta of not caring about Muggles and being selfish. To stop herself from retorting back angrily, she focused on one of the open windows and breathed like how her Yoga instructor taught her to. When she felt calm again, she turned to address Katy in as sweet a voice as she could. "But Katy, I was just wondering how else was she supposed to get people to notice her cause? If she hadn't broken any laws then the newspapers wouldn't have written about her and we wouldn't know as much as we do." That wasn't selfish! Kitty was planning to do the exact same thing when she graduated.

Then Derf raised his hand and made a very perfect point. Melbourne and Emmeline soon joined in, and Kitty decided she would to.

"I agree with them," she said, raising her hand. "Why is it fair when Muggles are put in danger for our entertainment and then have their memories wiped?" She understood why Valerie and the others were so angry over that.

Erindipity 07-24-2017 10:20 PM

This... was not something she cared to discuss. This line of questioning and debate about something that was still a sore spot with her. Like really. Had any of them been in that competition they might have a little more thought about NOT speaking on it in class.

Not that they were wrong, necessarily, just that maybe she didn't want to relive any of it... which she kind of was at the moment. Her mind raced and such.

Raising her hand, the Gryffindor cleared her throat and said, "The statute is the focus today. Not the IMPS. With that being said, aren't there heavy penalties for breaking the statute?" Not that she didn't KNOW that there were, but maybe they could shed some light on things and steer the conversation away from what was making her uncomfortable.

Have a heart, guys.

Also her eyes sought out Etta to see if she was alright.

SilverTiger 07-24-2017 10:45 PM

spiraling baby!Lioness here lol

Stasya had been quiet, but not because she’d stopped paying attention. Instead, it was mostly because from the first moment, when the Ravenclaw prefect had happened yet again, she had just been watching it all unfold with wide eyes, scared that something was going to happen to make things get scary again. The twelve year old was starting to wonder if maybe the professors wanted to cause arguments, even, and she felt like it was safer to just take notes on the important stuff instead of get involved. Besides, she hadn’t really had anything else to contribute that hadn’t been said. The only things she knew were what she’d read, anyhow. Plus, however unfair it was to have called out Zoryn over by the windows, at least she had been taking notes. She was trying to pay attention, but the subject matter was keeping her wide eyed.

Especially when Derf had suddenly come out and said that the tournament thing was basically challenging the statute, or at least that it was following the letter of the phrase on the blackboard which Professor Stewart had just pointed out had been used by Voldemort and his followers, and that made it extra scary. All it was doing was making her wonder if they were actually challenging the theory or if Kitty and the professors believed the same thing an extra-Dark wizard believed. And that just brought her back to what she’d been told about there being Dark wizards teaching here and made her wonder if maybe it wasn’t the professors she’d been told were, and so she was still silent.

Govoni 07-25-2017 12:44 AM

*plays slight catchup*

Honestly, after she'd made her contribution, the blonde's head had started to throb with a vengeance... So, she'd fallen silent. Stuff that caused grief, seemed to make it worse, and honestly, most discussions brought her some grief. Too many people trying to talk over one another. It was a pain. So, instead of subjecting herself to the torment, Liv kinda stared off into space, her thoughts drifting off to happier memories. More pleasant experiences. It eased the pressure somewhat.

After a few moments, she'd started to doodle little hearts in the corner of her notebook page. With not real male affiliation, just pretty hearts to decorate her notes. Oh, yeah, she needed to decide what potions she'd be working on...for the thing.

Carlotta Pinkstone? No, thanks.

Deciding to answer the second posed question, as it was more a matter of opinion, Olivia raised her hand. "For the most part, I think people can be good, but actions speak louder than words. I don't think there's enough evidence to support the idea that we'd be safe. So, in the interest of our safety, I think we should remain separated." Because Olivia loved people, but ultimately, she chose herself over what may have been more morally right. Call her a selfish, narcissistic teenager all you like, but...facts were facts.

......And here we go again.

Pushing through the sudden grossness she felt at this line of conversation, Liv carefully raised her hand again. She was hearing everyone, and understood where they were coming from... But felt this was getting them off-topic. Not that it was ever okay to use anyone (whoever they might be) as someone else's form of entertainment. That was definitely NOT okay...

"Professors, do you think.... Do you think there are ever any circumstances when magic would be okay to use? Say if you're trying to...protect yourself from a muggle?" Olivia was seriously curious.

That girl who Katy was trying so hard to not address directly was poking at her. Poking. At. Her. It was good the professors were directing them away from this explosive debate topic, especially before someone lost their considerable temper.

Like Katy. Who felt a bit itchy in her wand hand and wondered what Kitty would look with her hair gone...

"I'm feeling personally attacked right now. It's making me uncomfortable." Maybe she should cry? Was that too much? How did one get a prefect expelled, anyway?

Goblinfrog 07-25-2017 02:35 AM

Gosh! Kitty really did not like this Katy. What was she playing at anyway? Forcing herself to remain calm, Kitty forced a contrite look on her face and turned to the professors.

"I'm sorry Professors, it was just a question. I didn't mean to offend her and I wouldn't have asked if I'd known that's how she felt."

Deep breaths. Just keep breathing and stare at anyone, anything, but HER.

FearlessLeader19 07-25-2017 03:00 AM

We see all you guys <3

Maybe she should have not called out Zoryn but Kay felt it quite necessary since the little talk they had in her office seemed to have made no difference at all. It didn’t mean she was picking on the girl. On contrary, she was looking out for her. At Mel’s gesture of kindness, the woman smiled, pleased. “Two points to Gryffindor for that, Ms Sorin- Ward.''

Ah, talk of the Challenges were bound to surface. Kay listened to the opinions given to her before offering any of her own. “Had Muggles been used, then certainly I would have agreed to what Mr Ashburry- Hawthorne is suggesting,’’ she said calmly looking around at them all. Then she took the time to shake her head at Emmeline. “No one was kidnapped, Ms Sparkes. I assure you, everyone gave their consent. The Ministry, anyone of the Hogwarts staff or Board of Governors would take any actions to harm any Muggles.’’ This, hopefully, answered Kitty’s question and settled her down. Yes, Kay heard the words said to Kay quite clearly and the Ravenclaw received a pointed look. If Kitty took it any further, she would definitely be loosing a bundle of House points and maybe have a few hours in detention. "Apology accepted, Ms Valentine.''

“Thank you, Ms Umbridge,’’ the woman added with a slight smile to the Gryffindor. “Yes, the most common penalty is imprisonment in Azkaban.’’ Blue eyes moved to Olivia. “Excellent question, Ms Phillips! You’ve touched on our activity for today, actually. But to answer your question: Clause Seven of the Decree does dictate that magic may be used before Muggles in exceptional circumstances and those circumstances certainly include situations which threaten the life of the wizard or witch himself or herself as well as any witches, wizards or any Muggles present at the given time.’’

It was definitely time to move the lesson along. “Today, we shall have an activity designed to test your understanding of how important the Statute is. Professor Newton and I will pose scenarios to you and you have to let us know if you would reveal your magical abilities or not. It’s as simple as that.’’ Kay knew that this could very well spark debates but so far, she and Rose had managed to prevent this and was determined and confident that they continue the trend.

“First scenario: a close muggle friend has met with a fatal accident. You’re among the first rescuers to get to him or her and you realise it would take an extended period of time for the help they need to get to them. Healing Charms can help but unfortunately, you’re in the company of other Muggles. Would you use magic to save your friend?

“Scenario two: a Muggle friend is bored and wants entertainment. Being the good friend that you are, you are tempted to use your magical abilities to perform a series of tricks for them. Would you really go through with it?

“You may respond to both scenarios or just one.’’ They were both ‘open’ situations and could be resolved without the use of magic but it was of utmost importance to her and Rose that the students realise just how important it was to uphold the Statute no matter how heroic their thoughts might be. If she remembered correctly, the best friend had a scenario similar to the one Olivia mentioned. The Gryffindor will have her chance to voice her own opinions soon regarding her own question.

OOC:
Hello! You guys are making this such a fun lesson! While Whitty and I are loving the discussion about the Statue and IMPS, Rose and Kay are keen to avoid any debates  But keep those posts and opinions coming! <3 Whit will continue in about 24 hours. Also, please refer to this post where Zoe/ Regina clearly mentions that the champions' persons of importance had given consent ^_^

DISCLAIMER: This link leads to a post made in the IMPS viewing area.

What? Nicholas thought the first scenario was absolutely preposterous. He wasn't friends with Muggles! Honestly, where was he supposed to find one? Just go pick some of the street with a how d'you do and a wand shoved up his sleeve rather than in his palm? Ridiculous.

He would NOT entertain such fodder with a descriptive answer. Hmph.

"In neither scenario, professor," he began with his hand raised, "would I use magic." The fifth year would abstain in the latter, because it was silly, and the prior, because it was implausible.

ArianaBlack 07-25-2017 03:59 AM

HMPH.

The second year was SOooOOOOOoooOo angry. She did NOT wanna be here!!!! Forget Katy, ZORYN WAS FEELING PERSONALLY ATTACKED AND UNCOMFORTABLE TOO! Was she being overdramatic? MAYBE. But STILL. This wasn’t fair.

“Thanks,” she grinned at Mel who had offered up her notes. At least SOME PEOPLE were nice around here. Unlike CERTAIN PROFESSORS. Zoryn was gonna protest, by the way. She wasn’t sure how yet, but she was protesting. Which meant she was tuning her Professors out now, despite the fact that she was suddenly very much engaged in the happenings around her. Like that look Emmeline gave her, which Zoryn returned with a shrug.

And although Zoryn was PROTESTING by NOT voicing her thoughts, she definitely heard what Derf had to say (‘cause unlike her philosophy for listening to Professor’s, Zoryn ALWAYS listened to her friends). YEAH. The tournament used muggles!!! The muggle FAMILY members! And sorta the challenge with the patronus, but those were just dummies. Kinda like how Professor Stewart was being a dummy. Zoryn thought so at least.

Was Zoryn gonna answer the scenario questions?

NO. ‘Cause, like, protesting, remember?

Instead the Gryffindor crossed her arms and slumped down further into her seat. She even pretended like she was taking notes too so that she couldn’t get any points taken off.

Man, life was gonna be SO great when she dropped this class next term!!!

NifflerFan 07-25-2017 06:48 AM

mostly Stasya (at the end)

This lesson had taken such a confusing turn. Big kids were kind of having a go at each other like sneakily apparently? At least, Emmeline thought that was what was going on. And Professor Stewart's reply to her did not make the first year feel any better at all, nope. 'Cause like...how could a little Muggle boy give his consent and that be accepted?! She wasn't sure how old Miss Valerie's person was, but he didn't look like he was even old enough to go to Hogwarts or Ilvermorny. And and, she was eleven and had to go to court with a whole bunch of grown ups to be allowed to move in with the other Professor Stewart. Miss Judge hadn't just asked her what she thought and said 'okay.' So how come a boy even younger than her AND a Muggle could do that for something even more scary and dangerous?! It just didn't make any sense, like at all. Probably because it was WRONG. The Gryffindor opened her mouth to let some of these thoughts stop swimming in her head and start swimming in the air as words when she forced herself to stop. She had forgotten that there was an actual champion in class with them today. Emmeline's eyes sought out Dora's face and hoped reallllly hard that the older girl wasn't like, hurting from all this talking. After all, Dora had more right to talk about the evil third task than the rest of them did, 'cept for the other champions of course.

Time to re-focus, yup. Otherwise, she'd drown in all her swimming thoughts and end up too deep for even the giant squid to fish her out and back to the lesson. She tuned back in to Professor Stewart in time to hear the two pretend scenes that they were supposed to answer. The second one was obviously a trap -- of course they couldn't use their magic just 'cause someone was bored. Professor Stewart had just said so. The first one was way harder, though, and Emmeline scrunched up her forehead in concentration. In the end, she raised her hand and answered: "I'd use magic in the first pretend scene, professors, 'cause someone's life is wayy super important and I don't know any Muggle healing and stuff." Not that she really knew any healing spells either, but she supposed they were pretending that they did for this question.

Emmeline had just bent over her notes -- which were like 3 lines long, progress! -- and started doodling Picketta, Albus, and Sirius playing in the margins when it fully, totally hit her that her best friend had been super quiet the whooole time. She shot a sideways glance at Stasya, who was after all sitting next to her, and frowned at the expression on the other girl's face. Lowering her voice and leaning towards Stasya, she whispered: "What's wrong, Stas?" She should have realized that her friend was upset earlier. This was why letting thoughts swim away with you was bad, yup. She desperately super hoped that Stasya was okay.

Daydreamer11 07-25-2017 08:18 AM

Never a dull moment at Hogwarts. Shay just sat back and listened. She had given her opinion and that was that for her. However, things were starting to get a little testy. Fortunately though, it seemed that things were not going to to get out of hand. Not yet anyway. Professor Stewart gave her thoughts and then prepared some hypothetical scenarios. One was not hard for Shay to comment on. The other one, well that remained to be seen.

Shay had to think about it for a moment. When she had made her decision, she raised her hand. "With scenario number two, no I would not use my magical skills to entertain muggles. That is so unnecessary. If I was going to break the statute of Secrecy, it would not be for something as unimportant as that.". Taking a breath, Shay went on. "On the other hand, if it was a matter of life and death........I would have to think twice. If I could save my friend's life, I would probably try it.......that is if no muggle methods were working. Now of course I wouldn't be obvious. I would try a very discreet non verbal healing charm." Shay knew that this was probably not what her professors wanted to hear. But if this wasn't an exceptional circumstance, she didn't know what was. "If the accident was in fact fatal, then there would be nothing I could do to help my friend. No magic could help them."

hermygirl 07-25-2017 11:05 AM

Sam had stayed quiet in the lesson so far, diligently making notes, aware that there was likely to be at least one question on the Statute of Secrecy in her OWL exams. Her views on the statue was conflicted, and unlike others in this room, she didn't feel all that comfortable trying to verbalise them.

And at the mention of IMPS, her gaze sought out the Hogwarts Champions, Dora in particular. She'd been part of that challenge too, seen exactly what that Muggle boy had, albeit with a different Champion. She wasn't sure that seeing the Magic was the problem, since that was to save them from the cage and was positive thing. But that cold? It was real. And they could have put protective charms on that made them look cold but not feel it. Especially for the boy and the older people. Sam had felt it, and she'd grown up homeless, spending bitter winters on the street.

But that, as Dora said, wasn't the subject of today's lesson.

Of the scenarios given, the second was straight forward. "No, I wouldn't in the second case," she answered. "There's plenty of other means of entertainment. And it's pretty easy to make stuff disappear without magic, once you know 'ow." A watch, a wallet, even a necklace. She'd become rusty since her pickpocketing days, but she'd still be able to put on a Muggle friendly show.

The first scenario? That needed a bit more thought.

Lady of Light 07-25-2017 12:02 PM

Etta ignored all the debates/conversations that were going on in class. IMPS was a very sensitive subject and she really didn't like thinking about it so she doodled on her parchment, wishing the professor would just move on already. PLUS. Kitty and Katy seemed to be on the brink of getting into a fight and they really didn't need all the drama.. gosh. And yes, she'd noticed Dora glancing at her earlier.. and she was totally fine. YEP. She'd have to thank her for the concern later. That girl was rather sweet.

Etta frowned at Nicholas's response. Wow, he really was heartless.. wasn't he? She mentally shook her head and considered both the scenarios that the professor mentioned. "Well, professor.. scenario two is obvious. I wouldn't use magic but as for the first one.. I would say that one's health and life are more important than a statute so magic it is."

Kimothy 07-25-2017 12:20 PM

*fails at this* *jumps in the lesson anyway*

Vivian had kept herself too busy by quietly drumming her fingers on her desk, that she had forgotten she was seated in class. The blonde blinked her eyes and diverted her attention to Professor Stewart with a "hmmm, what was the answer to that again?" face. Though, really, it was mostly a confused look. Merlin, she should stop drifting into daydream world.

The bright side of it all? She was able to catch the scenario part of the situation, which Vivian listened to intently. She needed to focus on what was in front of her. So... uh, were they supposed to choose which scenario she would have used magic in? Right, that was interesting. In all honesty, Vivian may have used magic in the second scenario because, if she were the Muggle, she would have been so excited and interested at someone performing magic. But of course, that wasn't the case here, and they were opting for the more logical answer. And logical answer, it was. Vivian raised her hand to share. "I wouldn't use magic in the second scenario, Professor," she said, nodding as well to make it seem convincing. "As for the first scenario, I'm not so sure. I would have helped, yes, but that would probably get me into trouble." Which she didn't mind, to be honest, so she was obviously going to perform magic in the first situation... but she wasn't going to say that.

Ahem, yes. Vivian nodded and smiled at the Professor. She was done, and she actually listened this time!

Kitty looked down at her desk at Professor Stewart's stern look. It wasn't fair at all! Last year when she'd criticized Salathar Slytherin, Katy had insulted her and said that she HATED her. Granted, Kitty had returned the insult - but that didn't change that Katy started it. So why did Katy get to attack her hero (Pinkstone) and then cry about feeling attacked when Kitty very politely tried to question her?

Not thinking about Katy, Kitty did her best to answer the next questions. "For the first scenario I would of course break the Statute to save my friends life. Even if it wasn't my friend and it was a complete stranger, I would still save her or his life. If we're allowed to use magic to save one of our own, then we should do the same for Muggles. But for the second scenario I wouldn't break the Statute, because I wouldn't want to go to Azkaban just to impress my friends."

Would Katy save a Muggle friend if it meant breaking the Statute? Did she even have Muggle friends, Kitty wondered?

PhoenixRising 07-25-2017 02:34 PM

Uh WHAT!?! Skylar had been plainly ignoring the debates/conversations about the IMPS challenges, in particular the third one because she too had been a part of it. She was full aware about the consent and she was grateful to Dora for steering the conversation back to the Statute. And for Professor Stewart for gently reminding them of the topic as well.

Scenarios? How interesting and it seemed at least her peers were on the same level of consciousness that she was, for the most part. Except was it wrong if she kind of wanted to play devil's advocate as she so enjoyed doing on previous occasions?

"I think, the first scenario depends. I mean even if you're aware that healing charms can help out and save a life ... magic is might. If you're not fully competent with healing charms, then unfortunately you could maim your friend quicker than would natural." Sky said, after raising her hand. "And the second scenario depends as well ... what sort of magical abilities and tricks are you performing to entertain? You could just play with a quaffle, which is magic ... or perhaps wizarding snaps or wizarding chess. It doesn't have to be wandlore magic tricks." Really, Stewart hadn't specified about using a wand, so no need to jump ship and assume. There were plenty of entertaining magical games that didn't involve use of a wand.

Kirk was relatively bored in this lesson, but not enough to tune out completely. He continued to doodle some more when they were asked for any questions before the activity. He smiled into his doodling when Mel was being kind enough to earn herself some points. She was very sweet. "Nice job Mel," Could he sneak in a congratulatory kiss with her? He glanced up waiting until both Professors eyes weren't in their direction before leaning to deliver one on her cheek. They were seated close enough after all. He went straight back to taking notes to remain innocent looking until the activity was called.

In both scenarios? "The first scenario seems alright, if I were able to do some spells without a wand you could get away with that more easily than the second scenario. I wouldn't need to use magic to impress my friends, there's plenty of other stuff we could do."

Melbourne had gone silent after the comment about muggles not really being used…but still, that whole first challenge had been wrong. Really, she hadn’t seen Carl look so…so…hurt by anything before except for well maybe the whole thing where she had kissed him and then dated someone else a few months later but…but, he was, he was special to her still. He was just a different kind of special like a soul-friend-special.

Zoryn got a small nod in return, but seriously Mel’s notes were among the thing’s she would share with her housemates…and friends and really anyone if they needed them because HELLOOOO one day they might be needed for OWLs or NEWTs and for eher…well, that was coming SO quickly.

Don’t panic she told herself before looking toward Kitty as she answered…that was when she heard Kirk’s comment to her and smiled softly in return. ”Thanks Kirk, she muttered quietly as she was debating turning to give him a thank-you-smile when she felt it. He had kissed her cheek, and now her face was probably as red as the curtains in the common room. ”…” she couldn’t think for a moment.

Right…Kitty. Mel gave her a slightly more awkward than intended smile at her words. Raising her hand Melbourne spoke up giving her two knuts on the topic. ”As harsh as it sounds, for the first scenario I wouldn’t want to break the statute…not really, but I would try and find work-arounds for it.” Melbourne’s voice was somewhat shaking as she spoke, ”B-by workarounds…I mean that it is my intent to at least look into becoming a healer, so I would use my expertise in the situation and ask the surrounding muggles to help find things – like for example…go find towels, anything to stop bleeding and do as much as I can to limit the exposure of any magic I would use to muggles that are aware of the presense of magic…for example, if my cousin Natalie Denaker were hurt I would make sure th-that Hadley is there to help…she-she’s her twin if anything were to go wrong I’d want her to be there in her time of need…a-and I would try to use things that I always carry on me on the behest of my very very veeeeerrrrryyy silly father…” she paused before reaching into her bag and pulled a few bottles from it. ” – he’s afraid I’ll get hurt so I always have a bottle of skelegro, a few bezoar stones for the accidental poisoning…oh and a bottle of healing salve and burn paste.” she shrugged before adding in ”we don’t have to use our wands to use magic – we can use pomades and healing unctions’ in lue of wanded magic.”

Oh…wait…had she basically confirmed that Dustin was a little on the nutzo-bananas side of the ‘protective father’ spectrum in front of Kirk…why yes. Yes she had. Hah. This would be fun. ”oh – and as Kirk,” she grinned over to him before placing her hand delicately on his shoulder and…did she just sigh? Oh well, ”and others mentioned – I wouldn’t use magic to entertain non-magical folks…there are plenty of things you can do to entertain eachother” and no, no she was not going to admit that one of the easiest was snogging…this, she was in class not like having a private chat with Hads.

Cassirin 07-26-2017 01:22 AM

Katy crossed her eyes at Kitty, who was clearly the loser in this situation, before turning her attention back to the professors. Scenarios were better than debate, although there was little doubt they were all going to answer the way the professors wanted them to answer. Save a life because it was a forgivable offense; don't be stupid and do magic tricks with magic. That was easy.

And that Kitty girl was looking at her again. Go away, nerd.

Katy raised her hand. "I think if you don't know healing spells, you could do more harm than good by using magic on a person, whether there's an audience or not. And if the incident was really fatal, there's no point helping someone who has died, and your efforts could be seen as offensive by Muggle observers. But if you could really help and you know what you're doing, it would be a shame not to help."

WhittyBitty 07-26-2017 03:00 AM

Standing to the side, Rosalyn listened carefully as Kaysha took over the lesson. While there weren't many people enthused with hearing about Carlotta Pinkstone, there was a reason why she had been brought up and hopefully the students were paying attention to this. Notes were important, which is why she sent a smile towards Melbourne for offering hers to Zoryn. Those points were well earned.

"Your apology is accepted, Miss Valentine," she seconded. She and Kay were trying very hard to steer this lesson away from heated debate, and so far it was working fairly well. Whatever had come between her and Katy would hopefully be resolved. The fact of the matter was that this was a topic that could get heated rather quickly. That didn't change the fact that it was something that the students should know about. This was an important part of wizarding history.

It was no real shock to Rosalyn when the can of worms that was the IMPS was brought up by some of the students. While she herself had a problem with the third challenge, that was only because of the way that challengers responded to seeing their loved ones in such a state. The fact of the matter was that there had been complete consent before the challenge was performed and no way that anyone would get badly injured or killed. Kay had said things in the exact way that she would. So long as it was understood that no one was kidnapped and no real muggles were used for the first challenge, hopefully the students would feel relieved and not worry about this anymore.

Most of the students were up to giving their opinions on the scenario though there were a few who didn't seem up to it. Miss Spinnet in particular seemed to be in a sour mood, and it was probably because of what Kay had said to her. That was sad, but her friend had only said it to try and be helpful. There was no way that Kay would ever have done anything like that just to be mean and spiteful. She sent the girl an encouraging smile, hoping that she would calm down and be more willing to participate. If not that was completely fine too; they were running a bit low on time anyway, though there was still enough time for her to give them a few more scenarios to think about.

She smiled at the class. "Great job, everyone! It seems that most of you would perform magic in the first one while doing nothing in the second one. A muggle in danger certainly falls under Clause Seven of the Decree, while of course performing magic in the second scenario would most likely land you in Azkaban." So basically they were paying attention and that was always a GOOD thing. After pausing for a moment, she continued. "There are two more scenarios to go, and since Miss Phillips has raised a good question, let's use hers for one of them." Rosalyn had prepared something else, but she thought it would be nice to use something that one of the students had offered up.

"Scenario three: You are walking in a deserted street at night and out of nowhere a tough looking muggle comes up to you intending to do harm. Would you perform magic to save yourself? Or would you do something else that doesn't involve revealing yourself?" More or less what Miss Phillips was driving at as far as protecting oneself from a muggle. While Kay had explained that magic could be used in said circumstances, it was good to gauge what the students would do in that situation. Because really they could do either and this would fall under personal beliefs.

"Scenario four: You find out that one of your muggle friends has become very sick. They have a disease that unfortunately there is no muggle cure for. Would you expose yourself and use your magical abilities to cure them?"

It was going to be interesting to hear what everyone had to say! "As with the first two scenarios you can respond to one or both of them." Or none at all as had been the case with some people. Really they wanted to hear opinions on this.

OOC: Loving all the responses. You are all making this such a fun lesson. :) There is just this next set of scenarios and then it's a wrap! You have another 24 hours to get posts in before we are finished! Anyone who hasn't given their opinions for the first set of situations can still do so. ^_^

This time the nicer Professor spoke and Zoryn was still only half paying attention. The redundancy of the lesson was starting to get even MORE boring than it had been at the very start. It looked like their Professors would just keep taking turns asking questions--which Zoryn didn't care to answer as she was still in the middle of a protest--before the other Professor would chime in with an explanation.

How much longer until class was over?

'Cause it felt like an eternity. Zor continued to pass the time by pretending to take notes here and there while she secretly or maybe not-so-secretly payed no real attention to the new questions that were posed.

It would've been more tolerable had their Professors given them snacks like the better Professor Stewart did. Transfiguration was a lot easier to sit through because of it. Maybe Professor Muggle Studies was the one who needed to take some notes.

Just saying.

SilverTiger 07-26-2017 08:11 AM

Emmeline in the first part

She hadn’t answered the question of what she’d do in the first two scenarios. There was still way too much going through Stasya’s head for her to even think about answering, but she definitely agreed with what Emmeline had said. And everyone else, apparently. Magic was okay if it was being used to help people, but it wasn’t entertainment. And she still felt like the lesson hadn’t gone far enough away from the previous topics for her wide-eyed expression to fade. She wasn’t forgetting that any time soon, and she’d looked over as her best friend had asked. Dark wizards, she whispered, the only response she gave her. Things were definitely not okay if professors she’d previously thought were totally not dark wizards were talking about things that Dark wizards had believed in.

But she did raise her hand in response to Professor Newton’s questions, and she had been taking notes. “I’d probably just run or hide in the first one. And if I knew how to cure my friend with magic, I would.” Because she didn’t know enough defensive magic yet anyway, even if she did like DADA lessons and also she was small enough that hiding was possible so maybe she’d do both. She could curl herself up small, anyway, and also, they’d already said that it was okay to use magic to help injured people so if she knew a spell or something, of course she’d use it.

Lady of Light 07-26-2017 11:48 AM

GREAT. Another couple of scenarios.. As much as Etta liked this activity, she didn't understand the point of these questions. But then again, why should she? Just follow the instructions, yeah? There was no point in over-thinking. She rubbed her forehead with a small sigh, giving the questions some thought.. but they were quite straightforward, really. She raised a hand to answer.

"As for the first scenario, I would defend myself without using magic first. I would probably even try to escape but if that didn't work.. well, magic would be my very last option. And the second one.. if there was a way for me to cure them, I most definitely would." Because again, someone's health was WAY more important than revealing your magical abilities. At least, she thought so.

PhoenixRising 07-26-2017 07:36 PM

Hmph. Her well thought out responses, which were unique seemed to have gone totally unacknowledged. At least Kirk seemed to be on the same page as her in realizing there were other ways to entertain the friend without resorting magic. Which is essentially the same thing as what Professor Newton said in it not being a legit excuse to perform magic, but yet not.

And more scenarios, of which Skylar was totally tempted to respond with some sarcastic answers and yet the fourth year somehow managed to refrain. Mostly. "I doubt any magic I could do at this point in my education could seriously cause much harm, so obviously I'd do whatever means were necessary to save myself." #Slytherin. "Though I'm not sure why I would be walking in a deserted street at night either. But it depends on how the muggle intends to cause harm too, as sometimes people are all talk. Also, do I have access to my broom? Because I'd probably sooner resort to flying out of there rather than hexes or jinxes or muggle fighting." How about a bludger? She could do some serious harm with one of them.

"As for Scenario four, it depends. Like before, I doubt I'd be qualified to provide medical care for the friend and I could cause more harm than good. However, there is the possibility of getting them to see a magical healer if that was what they wanted. Consent is important, always." In case they learned nothing from the last IMPS challenge.

Goblinfrog 07-26-2017 08:21 PM

Well, the Ravenclaw prefect thought to herself with some grim satisfaction - at least Katy would be willing use magic to save a Muggle friends life. She couldn't be ALL that bad then, right? Hmmm.

Moving on to the next pair of scenarios (which Kitty was quite liking, by the way), she raised her hand to answer. "For scenario three I would use magic to defend myself against the Muggle, yeah." Most Muggles were perfectly good people, but she wasn't dumb - obviously there were just as many bad Muggles as bad wizards. "It wouldn't be violating the Statute since there's an exception when lives are in danger. I think a quick stupify ought to do the trick. Maybe something to keep him or her down longer so I can call the police. I wouldn't say I used magic to the police, of course, I'd just say he fainted. And no one would believe him when he said I did magic. I'm not very good at fighting physically at all and it's not like I own Muggle weapons, so magic is my best defense." The same was probably true for most of her classmates.

"In the fourth scenario, I would definitely use magic to cure my friend. I would do anything to protect the people I love, including breaking the Statute. Besides, isn't this a scenario where a life is in danger? Even if it wasn't, I would be willing to go to jail to save a friend's life."

A question occurred to her then that caused her hand to zoom back in the air. "I have a very related question about the Statute," she began. "There is an exception in the Stature for Muggles who are parents of a magical child. But what about if there was a couple who loved each other very much, one was a witch and the other a Muggle - but they didn't have kids? Or their kids didn't have magic. Would she be able to tell him about magic regardless, since they are married?"

lemon 07-26-2017 10:41 PM

This scenario game was getting a bit tedious, and Nicky's answer was not changing. He'd been roughed up more than once; the first scenario sounded scary, but was a defensive spell (that he probably wouldn't even perform correctly) really worth a lifetime in Azkaban?

And again with Muggle friends thing. Merlin, he barely had MAGICAL friends.

"Neither. I'd use magic in neither, ma'am." Honestly.

Cassirin 07-27-2017 01:46 AM

Kitty wasn't good at defending herself? Well. Perhaps they could settle things that way, since Katy planned on being very good at that very thing come next term. She bit back a smile and tried not to look too excited over the prospect. More of these scenarios to think about, right? More like more where the expected answer was obvious. Or less obvious in this situation, and Katy found herself agreeing with the unpleasant Tate kid.

She raised her hand. "I'd certainly hesitate to use magic in a situation that wasn't immediate and didn't offer some other way out. Threat of bodily harm is one thing, although I believe we could opt to leave or defend ourselves before risking revealing our whole community... but it's arguable, sure. But for a sick friend, I'm with Skylar. I don't know how to heal a person, and that sort of magic is best left to professionals, who may be able to do it discretely and non-verbally. I'm not saying we shouldn't get involved, but I think we have to be thoughtful. It's not that you're sharing your own secret with someone. You're sharing an entire community's safety with someone, and that someone could tell the world."

"I wouldn't do anything...because I'm not that great with Healing magic. Nor am I a license Heal-- Doctor." They were called doctors in the muggle world. Her grandparents were both muggle doctors... "I agree that it's a terrible idea to try and use magic to heal someone, when you might not know the extent of their injury. It's irresponsible, actually." She was a bit late in answer, but her head was really starting to pound. In fact, she was keeping up remarkably well, considering.

"I just feel like magic can do more harm than good in certain situations."

......Olivia hadn't meant for her question...to become part of either scenario. And to be honest? Perhaps she shouldn't have said anything, as she was feeling...kinda triggered now. Triggered by traumatic past events that couldn't have been changed, anyway, as she never carried her wand around with her when she wasn't here at school. It only added to the helpless feeling that had taken hold of her when the....thing was actually happening....

...and scenario three had her putting her head down on the table....for a moment.... Her and her stupid, big mouth. "I wouldn't use magic at all, because I'm not of age to use magic outside of school. " First off, but secondly. "...As I said before, magic isn't good all the time. Especially when you're under duress. You might accidentally kill someone." Even if you're trying to protect yourself, you shouldn't take a life, right?

Daydreamer11 07-27-2017 03:03 AM

It was very interesting to hear what everyone would do in the hypothetical situations. There were a lot of differing opinions presented and Shay was surprised at some, not so much at others. Now though, they were moving on and it seemed that part two of the activity involved more scenarios. They were really making Shay think today. It was always difficult to imagine what one would do when the situation was hypothetical. You think you know, but in the heat of the moment......who really knows what they would do?

Shay thought about the next two situations for a moment and then raised her hand. "In scenario three, if I was sure that the muggle meant to harm me........I would probably only have seconds assess the situation and make a decision. What I would do would depend on a lot of things, how big the muggle was, whether or not he was armed.". Shay thought about all of the training she and Noelle had been doing. Could she take the muggle down? "If I thought I could defend myself non-magically, I would. If I thought I could get away safely, I would do that. I would use magic to save myself as a last resort, if I thought I had no other options." Shay was definitely not going down if she could help it.

As for scenario four, she continued. If I had a muggle friend with a disease that muggles could not cure and there was a magical cure for that disease.........I would try to help them as much as I could safely. But preferably in a way that would not reveal myself as a witch. Maybe I could give them a potion without them knowing what it was or use a spell without them being aware that I was doing it." If you used magic on a muggle, but they didn't know what you did, was that still a crime? If a tree falls in the woods......... These were tough moral dilemmas, but Shay wanted to think that's what she would do.

WhittyBitty 07-27-2017 03:04 AM

It was almost time to end the lesson, and Rosalyn supposed that might be for the best because some of the students clearly weren't enjoying what was being covered. A real, shame but something that she was used to; history was never one of the more popular subjects. No matter though since it was important to know this stuff and she enjoyed teaching it.

Smiling, she nodded as responses started coming in. "So it seems that most of you would decline using magic in the third scenario despite it being completely legal." That was interesting to note. "That would definitely be a creative way of dealing with things, Miss Valentine." Quite impressive! And yes, Rosalyn knew what it was like to feel as if one wasn't very good at defending themselves. Why she had tried her hand at dueling club, though that hadn't gone successfully...

"It does indeed fall under the Clause, Miss Valentine." And huh. Another interesting question. "Well, there is no LEGAL issue when it comes to telling a spouse, but keep in mind that it would be a huge shock for a muggle. I'd say that it's best to use discretion in that kind of situation, but it depends on how the spouse would react to the news." After all some people accepted things better than others. I'm not surprised that most of you would use magic in the fourth scenario, though of course Miss Diggory, Miss Toussaint, and Miss Phillips raise a good point for us to remember in our day to day lives. When someone doesn't have abilities in a certain form of magic, it's best to leave it to someone who DOES." That was just a general statement. Of course in a hypothetical situation they were free to answer as if they could help the muggle themselves. "Good idea with the potion, Miss Morrison!" People sometimes forgot about those.

Anyway! Rosalyn glanced at her watch and saw that it was time for them to call an end to the lesson. "Wonderful job, everyone! That's it for today. Have a good rest of your day." Since opinions on the Statute had been shared, there wasn't really a need to talk about it after the lesson. Unless of course people WANTED to do that. Something completely fine in her books.

OOC: And that's a wrap! Thanks for attending our lesson. :) The thread will be left open for a little longer in case anyone wants to post wrapping up.

Goblinfrog 07-27-2017 03:24 PM

Now why was Katy looking so happy? Was it something she'd said? The Slytherin girl had only started looking excited after Kitty finished speaking, which was really weird unless it was just a coincidence. Kitty frowned. Hmmm...

Professor Newton's answer on telling your spouse was pretty awesome. Before now she didn't know what exactly the rule was concerning your spouse if you didn't have magical children. So it was nice to know that the Ministry realized you should be allowed to tell the person you love whatever you want.

And then this very interesting lesson had come to a close. Well! Kitty stood up to leave, thoughts of the debate they'd just had still swirling in her head, and she turned to the professor's to thank them for the lesson. "That was one of the most interesting lessons ever," she told them. "I was wondering when we were going to talk about the Statute. Thank you Professor Stewart and Professor Newton!" Beaming at them, she turned to leave.

And she made sure to avoid eye contact with Katy on the way out.
