History of Magic Lesson One - Improving the Wizarding World
It's a rather chilly morning in mid-November, so Rosalyn had made sure to place heating charms throughout the classroom. She had also prepared hot chocolate for any of her students who would like some. Nothing like a nice hot drink when it was getting closer to winter. Cups of it were waiting on a table by her desk, and there was a plate of rice crispy squares as well. Those, like all the other snacks she provided were self-replenishing.
Sipping from her mug of coffee, she sat at her desk and waited for the students to start arriving. Hopefully they would like today's lesson.
OOC: Hello, everyone! I will be starting my lesson in approximately 24 hours. Feel free to chat among yourselves until class begins, though please don't go crazy with it. CLASS HAS BEGUN.
There was no real reason for Levi to continue taking History of Magic on a NEWT level; it just wasn't one of the classes required for the career path he intended to follow. But he decided against dropping the subject altogether because it required thinking and reading, activities he found stimulating and therefore enjoyed immensely.
He wandered into the classroom and shot a smile at Professor Newton. His nose wrinkled, at the smell of chocolate, and Levi allowed it to lead the way. The snacks he passed on, but the hot chocolate was a treat and he helped himself generously with it before finding a seat somewhere around the middle of the classroom.
Oh, right. Smiles were likely not considered enough as far as greetings went.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
Merlin she was NOT looking forward to this.
History of Magic was hard. Not because of the content but how most of the knowledge acquisition took place. The thing with history was...it already happened. It was in the past. There was no doing studies and getting pending results because it had already been done and for the most part required reading.
It wasn't to say that Jessa disliked reading but rather that she found learning harder when it was solely through a textbook. Leisure reading was amazing, but too much academic reading without a practical outlet had a way of doing her head in.
"Hello Professor." The young girl greeted politely enough. She moved over to the refreshments, grabbing herself a cup of hot chocolate and a rice crispy. Jessa then took her seat and sunk into it.
No, she wasn't looking forward to this lesson, but the hot chocolate certainly helped.
Also, "Hi Levi." Because Althea said she'd talk to him for her, which obviously meant it was officially okay to greet him herself too.

"Hello, Professor."
Dora passed the professor and entered the room. She DEFINITELY had reasons to be in HoM class. For real. Not that she needed to justify it to anyone, bro.
Oh wait. Professor.
"Good day, Professor, " she said sweetly as before swiftly turning and making her way to her housemate. She didn't yet utter a word to him. Currently she was digging through her bag for her quill and parchment. ...and trying to ignore the fact that he had taken DRINK FROM A PROFESSOR.
It made her eye twitch involuntarily. But, with great effort, she kept it in. No need to repeat that particular class last term.
Ugh.
Once she had finally settled back, the blonde girl crossed her hands on top of her desk and smiled over at Levi. "Hey. How's it goin? "
BOOM! NAILED THE CASUAL GREETING. Also don't look at the twitchy eye.
And there was the Ravenclaw that seemed to recoil at her very presence. Jessa. How odd. WHATEVER COULD DORA HAVE DONE TO make her feel... whatever she had felt about her? CURIOUS. But the Gryffindor covered her twitchy eye with one hand before waving with the other. A smile was even offered. "And you, Jessa... how are you? " Not abrasive.
Weird, but not abrasive.

Well Winter is really coming innit?
Bundled up with heating charms to boot, the Gryffindor Ace walked into History class, a ready smile for the pretty Prof "Mornin Professor Newton!" he greeted the brunette. No longer confused he was with his class schedule see? Only one Newton on the list still sobbing over his former HoH.
And yes grabbing a hot cocoa and some a lot rice crispy squares.
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes

By the time classmates started pouring in, Levi had finished his first helping of hot chocolate and had gone for the second. Jessa Cambridge greeted him more or less at the same time he took over his desk once more. Because Levi was busy setting his hot coco down and retrieving his journal and self-inking quill from his messenger back, the Ravenclaw received a very distracted, "Hi, Jessa." Catching himself a few seconds later, he actually turned and shot the girl a smile. Levi did not make a business of spending copious amounts of time memorizing the names of younger students, but Jessa's energy and class participation weren't easy to miss.
And she wasn't even really that young anyway.
He went back to his hot coco, or rather intended to, but then Dora showed up and common courtesy dictated he had to acknowledge her in the same manner he'd acknowledged Jessa. Or maybe more because he was actually friends with Dora. Even if the hot coco was calling his name. "Hi." Smile. "I'm great. You?"
Levi would have gone on unaware of whatever turmoil Dora may or may not have gone through had it not been for the fact that his was, strangely enough, covering one of her eyes. "Is it... Pirate Day today, Dora?" Or was this just her thing with food like last term in Charms? Levi looked down at his hot coco then at Pirate Dora and shrugged.

Stasya felt like she was warm enough as she’d found her way down the corridors to the History of magic classroom. Actually, she was more worried about Dobby and Albus, out there in the barn and the nursery, so she was really ignoring the fact she was sort of cold. As she’d walked through the doorway into the classroom, she’d had her robes wrapped tightly around her, her arms basically hugging herself. But she relaxed as she feeling of the heating charms hit her, and she managed to give Professor Newton a big smile as she headed straight for the smell of hot chocolate coming from the table near the professor’s desk. “Good morning Professor Newton,” she added, taking a cup from the table before going to look for a seat.
She already knew that certain people probably would’ve been weird about her taking the cocoa, but it was cold. If all the food and drinks in the castle were bad, she’d starve. And probably freeze too, even if she was determined to learn spells to help with that. She already knew the fire charm and the heating charm Professor Marchand had taught them, so she figured it’d be easy to learn others too. But this was History, so she probably wouldn’t hear about any right now.
Jessa, Levi and Ace had all taken cocoa too, so that meant it couldn’t be bad. Either way, she’d found a seat sort of near them but still leaving space for when other people came if they wanted. “Hi Jessa,” she said with another smile, also turning it to the three older Gryffindors. Hi to everyone. Mhm. And now cocoa.

Melbourne had R U N all of the way down to History of Magic. It was a wonder that she wasn’t panting as she made it to the doorway and stepped into the classroom a bright grin on her face. Taking a steadying breath she looked around the room and smiled at Rosalyn – gosh, she was pretty and sooooo nice. ”Hello Professor Newton,” she smiled up at the MUCH taller and well…honestly older woman that she respect oh so much. ”Thank you for the treats Professor,” she smiled softly and looked around the room before taking a mug of hot chocolate and grabbing herself a rice crispy square and heading to find a desk.
”Hey Levi,” Mel grinned at her housemate and glanced over to the girl greeting him…she hadn’t met her yet but she’d had her in other classes, ”hey,” she smiled over to Jessa ”nice move grabbing a bit of both,” Mel grinned before spotting Dora….was she having a seizure?
”h-heeey Dora?” Mel smiled over to the older Gryffindor girl and was halfway ready to ask her if she was okay…JESSA that girl was named Jessa…right. ”congratulations on getting selected for the IMPS…and you too Levi, you guys are going to do well,” that she was sure of and with that Mel looked around and sent Tenacius a wave before sinking into a free seat….he could sit there if he wanted near her or maybe that would be saved for Hadley if people just claimed him like he were their personal property. Mel didn’t really mind, she’d already done what she had planned on doing during the first competition…and that wasn’t all that hard.
No.
It was hard.
Watching was hard…everything this term was making her fidget with nerves.
Mel looked at the fairy girl when she came in and grinned at her. "Hey Stasya..." she grinned still quite nervous about what was to come in this class and in the rest of the school year.

It was way too cold in this castle. Emmeline was shivering as she entered the classroom, and she was holding her robes as tightly around herself as she could to keep the precious warmth from escaping. Of course, she might be so cold because she'd forgotten to grab her cloak this morning and had run down to the nursery to see Sirius anyway -- but she'd been worried about him. Barns weren't much cover for the poor creatures. Sirius had been fine; she supposed she should have thought of his fur coat before she went all the way down there and back to the castle for this very lesson, but it was too late now. "M-morning, Professor,"she greeted the teacher kind of quietly. The heating spells were definitely helping already, but the first year still made a beeline for the hot chocolate.
Derf had warned her about the food professors gave out, but she saw several older kids with cups too, and Stasya, and Jessa, so she figured this hot chocolate was okay.
Everyone in the classroom got a smile and a wave from Emmeline; she knew most of them since they were her Housemates except for Jessa. She picked a seat in easy talking-distance of Stasya AND Jessa. "Hi Stasya! Hi Jessa!". There were still seats in between the girls though, because what about Derf and Abey? Although sometimes Abey sat with older kids, she'd left a seat for him if he wanted it.
Etta yawned as she made to her next class. It was one of those mornings when you just wanted to sleep in but she didn't like missing classes. Firstly, she was a prefect and she had a reputation to maintain and second of all, missing class would mean missing notes. Most of the classes were fun anyway, thanks to the professors.
She entered the class, giving the professor a bright smile. "Hello, professor. Hope you're well today." She skipped the drinks and crispy treats since she'd just had coffee so she made her way to a seat somewhere near the middle and sat down, dropping her bag to the floor before turning to give her fellow classmates a wave. She pulled out her parchment and quill, excited to see what the professor had in store of them today. Hopefully, something interesting!

It was starting to get colder in the corridors of Hogwarts so Olivia was very glad that the History of Magic classroom was already nice and warm. Entering the classroom, she made her way over to the Professor. "Hello Professor Newton! How are you?" she asked with a polite smile before heading to grab some hot chocolate. Hot chocolate made everything better. Olivia was certain of that. Then she headed over to Grab a seat next to Etta. Before she did that, she gave a wave and grin to her fellow housemates.
"Hey Etta! How's it going?" she asked as she slipped her bag off of her shoulder and onto the floor and took a seat.

Vivian was very appreciative of many things in life, and one of these would be the fact that the next class, History of Magic, was just on the first floor of the castle. It meant she was nearer to her Common Room and thank Merlin for that. She'd struggled a lot to gather enough motivation to attend classes, especially with Astronomy class up at the Astronomy tower. Imagine the amount of steps she had to take from the Dungeons to that classroom? So yes, Vivian was in good vibes at the moment.
Skipping inside the classroom as always, Vivian smiled at her professor. "G'morning, Professor Newton," she greeted and then settled for a seat at the second row. The Slytherin only sat in the front row for Professor Pretty Hirsch's classes, exclusively. "Ooooooooh, hot chocolate! May I grab a mug, Professor?" Can't deny the fact it was chilly today.
Plus, she had packed a few marshmallows instead her sling bag today. Hot chocolate and marshmallows would mix well on this weather. Yaaaay for today.

As Abey stepped into the classroom, warmth washed over him, followed by RELIEF. The corridors were draughty and, in Abey's expert opinion, freezing, and it felt GOOD to be in a nice warm classroom, EVEN THOUGH it was literally easily Abey's least favourite and worst class.
"Good morning, Professor," Abey greeted Newton - the only Newton now, which made it a little easier to remember... sort of... maybe... not really - with a smile, as he made a beeline for the hot chocolate. "Thank you for all the warm."
Very grateful. Very very very grateful.
Looking out over the classroom, Abey tried to find someone to sit with. There was no Rula or Junia, and no Daisy yet, though there was a Levi but he was sat with Dora and Abey thought that perhaps they didn't want to be bothered by a second year today, especially one that would keep needing help in the lesson, probably. Abey's VILLAIN wasn't here yet either, but there were a bunch of other students close to his age that Abey could sit with.
Like with Emmeline! Abey gave her a smile and a "Hello!" as he went to sit with her, near Jessa, setting his hot chocolate down because it was too hot to drink at the moment, and instead holding his hands over the cup to warm them up.

Abey's VILLAIN was HERE now!
Here and making a beeline right towards the Gryffindor in fact - after giving the professor a hurried wave and GRIN, of course. There were a few erratic waves here and there - like at LEVI because that was another champion who he needed to get a signature for on his t-shirt and of course he waved at Dora too - and plopped himself riiiiiiight down in the seat next to Abey.
..........and he had hot chocolate.
NOOOOOOOOOO!
"ABEYNOYOUCAN'T," he hissed so as not to cause a scene. "I've been warned NOT to trust the food given by profes-ssors! They put OTHER things-s-s in it." And besides, hadn't Abey seen his very thoughtful and well drawn posters from last term? The one about there being HAGS on staff??
And yes, hello Emmeline and Stasya. Yes hello. Hi. They shouldn't eat or drink anything either.

She wasn't gonna lie, she was a little deflated at the distracted, lackluster returned greeting from the Gryffindor. It must have been her. She didn't exactly fall into his circle of friends--poor guy was probably embarrassed to have a Third Year talking to him when he was such a super famous Hogwarts Champion with older, more mature friends, like Dora who'd just strolled in.
Her heart did a little flutter sort of thing when Levi belatedly turned to offer her a smile and she was sure to smile back but the feeling was quickly replaced with a sinking one when Dora took the seat next to him. On impulse, Jessa lowered her gaze to her hot chocolate, not wanting the girl to yell at her for being rude--or offend her by staring too long in her direction, or anything else that was likely to set her off. It came as quite the surprise when she heard her call her name....and...ask how she was....doing....?
Huh? Jessa blinked, unsure what was really happening before quickly blurting out "Fine. I'm fine." A little too quickly. Not gonna offend this one, nope. Noooope. Didn't need that kind of intimidating hostility again. NOPE. "And you?" Peeeerfectly polite. Not even gonna mention the eye thing.
It was a welcome relief when both Stasya and Emmeline walked into the room and took seats near her. She could just focus on them and not the Gryffindor that could switch at the flip of a galleon. "Hey guys!" She returned their greetings with a grin. The grin grew wider at Melbourne's compliment. "Thanks! Figured I'd save myself a second walk to the table."
And there was Abey wandering in just before Derf did. He got a smile as he took the spot near her as well. Abey was already good people in her book, but he became better people after that science club meeting when he didn't lose it like everyone else did. And what was Derf whispering on about now?

There was reason for Skylar to be excited for History of Magic and it had nothing to do with the subject matter, so much as the Professor. Professor Newton - the only one now - was always so thoughtful and amazing. Much like that boyfriend, or was it fiancé, of hers.
Except for one minor thing. She distinctly smelled coffee by the woman and yet there was only hot cocoa by the refreshment table. Nothing against hot cocoa, especially with the cold Scottish months approaching, but a cup of coffee would be great to help maintain her alertness right now.
"Hello Professor! How come no coffee option for the rest of us?" the fourth year smiled politely as she took a seat near the front, yet not THE front.

He was here!
Bentley burst in through the door with an obvious pep in his step. Today was going to be a great day! He had decided on it. Nothing was going to get him down...not even back to back classes with no break in between.
"Morning professor!" He flashed her a dimpled grin before snatching one cup of hot chocolate off the table. He thanked her with a nod and a grin. The sixth year lion then scanned the class for his friends.
Oh there was LEVI.
Bentley took the seat to the other side of his dorm mate but not before nudging him first.
"You know you could have waited. I don't mind a bit of company to class every now and then." He said to the middle Kenning.

History of Magic was NOT one of Lucy's strongsuits, despite the lack of wandwork. There was just too much to memorize and keep straight. It was hard to tell goblins apart when she was trying to fill her head with so much other information. So she came to class prepared to pay close attention.
The warmth of the classroom was welcome. So was the hot chocolate. Lucy helped herself to a glass and found her normal seat in the front of the room. She made sure to take out her parchment and quill for note-taking before she allowed herself to enjoy her beverage treat.

What arrived for History of Magic class in a rather good mood. As she entered the classroom, her mood got an even bigger boost. Hot chocolate? And was that.......rice krispy treats? Well Shay was just about in heaven at that point. "Hello Professor", she said with unrestrained glee. Snacks and good snacks at that. What could be better?
"Hello everyone", Shay said to the masses, then made a beeline for the snack table. After getting her cocoa and rice krispy treats, she found a seat and made herself comfortable. Yes, her goodies would keep her well occupied until class started.

Daisy's approach to choosing her NEWT level classes had been pretty straight forward. Pick what she liked (and what her Mum told her was useful and, quote, You absolutely need to study that, Daisy Elladora) and dropped the things she wasn't interested in. History of Magic was not her favourite but the classes were interesting enough and usually filled with discussions that greatly amused her.
Remember last year's attack on Salazar Slytherin? Good times.
"Morning, Professor!" Daisy greeted as she walked into the classroom with a slight spring in her step. It couldn't be helped, even if it wasn't exactly unconscious; Hogsmeade weekend was almost there, after all which meant buying candy and possibly snowball fights if it snowed during the night. But. Uhm. Why was everyone complaining about the cold? The corridor wasn't that cold, was it? Daisy didn't really feel it so she moved past the hot chocolate and the treats and towards the classroom.
"Skylar." The sixth year looked at her fellow Slytherin and shook her head at the girl's question. Didn't she want to play Quidditch professionally too? "Coffee is terrible for you, you shouldn't drink it." Because she was a child, but Daisy didn't add that part, in case Skylar got offended. Instead, she waved enthusiastically at Derf and Abey, glad to see them together and in the company of a first year. Were all the Gryffindors sitting together, though? "Dora, why are you checking your eyesight just before class?" So weird, sooooo weird. Whatever. Let Levi and Bentley handle their housemate. She wiggled her fingers in the direction of her best friend and sent Bentley a smile because she was trying not to judge him and dislike him. Genuinely. Mainly because she was finally understood that he truly was unavoidable. Oh well.
But Daisy was not going over there. Daisy was going to sit ... next to Lucy, yes! The girl still looked stressed but the Slytherin quickly made her way over and took a seat next to the Hufflepuff. "Lucy, how are you this morning?" She set her bag on the table and squinted at the Hufflepuff. "Have you had breakfast?"

Yawn.
Sorry, Olivia was tired (and in a very, VERY cantankerous mood), so there wouldn't be any excited exclamations from her upon entering the History of Magic classroom today. Nope, the goal was to keep her head down and focus on the lesson; so she didn't snap at people and get herself into trouble. When you had parents who were so integral to the fabric of Hogwarts, it wasn't difficult to get nagged about every little thing. Liv was already ignoring her mother's correspondence. There was no need to give cause for the owls to turn into howlers.
And Marilyn would.
Disposition somewhat tempered by the warming charms placed about the classroom (it was COLD and DRAFTY in the corridors), the Gryffindor decided to pass on hot chocolate. GASP?! Yes, Olivia was passing up snacks. Alert the press. The consideration was always appreciated, truly, but she was kinda over all her Professors trying to feed her at this point. The blonde had pudge going on due to all the sweets, treats, and snack items in her lessons. Could it just stop being an option at some point? They needed healthier options.
Good lord, who was she?
Making a point to not notice anyone in particular (a general HELLO conveyed with forced smiles and some waving)... Liv seated herself near the front. There would be notes, and luckily for her, someone had remembered their Quick Quotes. Finally...."Good morning, Professor." The words were mostly monotone and lacked any real enthusiasm. There would be a lot of keeping her head down today.

Dora didn't give a hippogriff's patoot what anyone thought of her aversion to food and drink offered by the professors. She didn't, however, STARVE. The house elves had never tampered with anyone's food before. Hmph. Besides she got care packages once a week from various family and family friends. The girl never did without.
And she had also learnt that people would make their own decisions, so she didn't try to force anyone to follow her rules. BUT PEOPLE WITH RULES LIVED LONGER. Just saying.
Once she was sure her eye wasn't twitching as much she took her hand away and smiled at Levi. "I'm fine. Yeah. Fine. And Pirate Day isn't until February. Don't be silly. " SILLY LEVI. "Just... a stress thing." And then her eyes traveled to his mug... and gave him a LOOK. "Pleasedon'tdrinkthat.
Mel. She got a far more relaxed smile. For now. And a sense of pride swelled in her for a moment. "Thanks, Mel. I really appreciate that. I just hope I don't mess up and do something dumb. "
Like lose.
SPOILER!!: Jessa

Merlin. This girl was jumpy. All Dora had done was block her path and tell her she was being rude. Sheesh. It could have been much worse.
MUCH.
An eyebrow was quirk as she watched the girl kind of... have a fit? Was she having a fit? Merlin! "Are you sure you're fine? You look like you're sweating. " Dora said this with a gentle tone so as not to spook the creature. Girl. She was a girl. Ravenclaws were an odd lot. She'd know since she was best friends with one and dating one. And NO it wasn't Mason Winslow. CASPER GREENWOOD. SHE DATED CASPER! "And I'm well. Thanks for asking. " SEE. She wasn't horrible.
Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.
It was morning. It was chilly.
So Noelle was in a chilly morning mood.
Heading into the History of Magic classroom, her eyes focused on the hot chocolate and headed straight over there for a nice warm cup. She was probably drinking her calories this morning, but she hadn't had nothing to eat yet due to waking up late and missing her morning training session.
Another thing to be meh about this morning.
One sip from the hot chocolate though, gave her enough emotion for a smile. One that she shared with everyone she passed as she headed for a seat over to the side of the classroom. The warmth of the mug felt good against her fingers so everyone got tiny waves as well.
Sitting next to Shay, she gave a tiny "Hey" Because that's all she could manage right now. At least until she finished this hot chocolate and got some energy.
"'Morning Professor." She said loud enough as well. She lifted her mug without taking her hands off it and sipped it again. Normally she'd pull her things out for class at this moment, but she needed the pick me up first.
Villaaaaiiiiiiiiin!!!!!!! YES!
Abey was just returning Jessa's smile when Derf the Villain sat next to him, but THEN THAT GREETING(?) HAPPENED and Abey started in surprise, his eyes going all wide as he looked between Derf and the hot chocolate a few times.
"But... it's warm, Derf," he replied, quietly but not whispering because it was very difficult to whine in a whisper, and Abey wasn't one to hold back. Even so, he ended up biting his lip after Derf told him... that. Uhhh... UHHHHHHH........
Torn. He was torn. Derf's advice, or lovely warm sweet HOT chocolate?
... Thing was, Abey trusted Derf (his BEST FRIEND) more than he trusted... Hogwarts people. For reasons that had become even more pronounced and important recently actually.
"... Can I at least keep using it for my hands?"
