| | Greenhouses Image by: Pixie The Greenhouses are all kept neat and tidy by Professor Myers. Each one is evenly spaced out in their residing spot outside of the castle. There are five greenhouses, all of them done up to Professor Myer's idea of organization, which carefully follows past organization of the greenhouses with just a few changes. The air is a little crisper out here, students.
Greenhouses one through three are open to student aid and experimentation. If you're careful and confident, you can feel free to tend to the Venemous Tentaculas in Greenhouse Three or engage in a playful tug-of-war with the Devil's Snare in the Greenhouse Two. If you traipse through each greenhouse, you will identify almost every sort of magical plant that has ever been taught at Hogwarts. Bubotubers, puffapods, fanged geraniums, biting toadstools, flesh-eating shrubs, and so on..... and that's not even mentioning the assortment of Muggle flowers in Greenhouse One!
Each greenhouse has little shelves for cute or ordinary pots, as well as racks of tools and any other necessities you may need in the large corner cabinets. There's plenty of lab tables for setting up your own tinkering station, and sinks to clean up in too. Don't forget to add to the compost pile behind the greenhouses when you're done with your trimming! OOC: Here's a basic guide of what you might find in each greenhouse; please remember to play realistically based on your character's age and skill level! Current Listing of Plants Available to Student Care/Experimentation Greenhouse One: the basics- Any and all mundane flowers

Olivia had spent her free time wandering after the Illvermorny students had arrived. They seemed friendly enough but preferred to remain with their friends which made sense as they were in a completely new environment. As she rounded a corner and a few more steps, she found herself in the Herbology greenhouses. It was nice and quiet here- a much needed change after the party at the Gryffindor table. She headed towards the first greenhouse which contained a beautiful variety of colorful plants, herbs, and flowers. Her eyes focused on a colored rose as she watched it change back and forth momentarily. Beautiful and so calm. It almost made her forget why she had come here in the first place.

River had planned to visit Paul's greenhouse, not because he wanted to get 'revenge' for his 'stolen' tea leaves, but to see if the man had any unique herbs that his own garden doesn't offer. Paul after all, was the Herbologist in this school. He ought to check the place for himself.
Assuming that he would be alone, considering that everyone was busy with their Ilvermorny visitors, River stopped dead in his tracks when he realised that he was not alone. Well, at least it wouldn't be an awkward encounter, given that he was familiar with who it was. "Miss Holden," River started as he walked slowly inside the greenhouse giving the young Lioness a friendly grin, "I did not expect to see you here. How have you been?" It has been a while since the last time they talked. Perhaps the monster from last term made it overwhelming for the not so new transfer from Beauxbaton.

Olivia, once again having gotten lost in her thoughts, hadn't noticed another person enter the greenhouses until she heard a very familiar voice. Healer Reed was that you? She turned away from the colorful roses and grinned. " Healer Reed. It is good to see you," she said with a smile. She hadn't seen him well since she hurt her arm. " I've been well thanks. No accidents or injuries so far this term!" She nodded briefly before finding the closest wooden shelf to gently knock on so that she wouldn't jinx herself. Olivia wasn't superstitious but it was something that her family did. Her father had taught her that. " I've spent most of my time studying and catching up with mates. I'm excited for the competition!" Excited and worried. A few friends were participating and some of the Illvermorny students were very.... intimidating.
" How have you been, Healer Reed?" she asked, wondering what he had been up to lately. She hoped that not too many students had gotten injured so far. OH! ROSCOE AND BUMI! " How are Roscoe and Bumi doing? I hope they are also well."

"How are Roscoe and Bumi doing? I hope they are also well." River tucked his hands behind him and took a good look at Paul's Greenhouse. He liked the smell of the earth in there, reminding him of the outdoors. "No accidents or injuries is the best news you can tell a Healer, Miss Holden. Good for you." River smiled at the Gryffindor and moved on to inspect on a herb that was nearby giving it a quick sniff. Sage.
The Healer straightened up and moved on to the next herb available, "Everyone is excited about the competition, I believe. Here's hoping I wouldn't have to deal with serious accidents while it's underway." Because really, he could use a break from last term. But then again, when did accidents stop in this school anyway? River chuckled at the thought and reached out towards a thorny herb bush, "I am doing well, thank you for asking. Although I could use an extended summer vacation if you know what I mean." he said giving the Gryffindor a knowing look. "They've grown...gained a few more pounds as they should...and they're getting better with rescue efforts." of which, River was very proud.

Since Dora had started at Hogwarts basically, she had always brought Lola to school with her and housed her in the Greenhouses. Lola being her lovely fanged geranium. She wasn't very well behaved some times, but it had gotten better with age really. Dora often just sang (poorly) at her a lot and stroked her leaves, she loved that!
The Gryffindor was distractedly doing the leaf stroking thing now as she sat with one arm propped on the workstation. Lola was absently chewing on her hair, not that the blonde girl cared, really. But it was likely quite a sight to anyone who might wander in. She had too much on her mind lately to care, though.
UGH. Why was being a teen so HARD! Even if she was ALMOST an adult.

UGH. Why was being a teen so HARD! Even if she was ALMOST an adult. To make matters harder for Dora, she was also an IMPs champion, so Paul could assume that she was under an extreme amount of stress. Which is why he smiled when he saw her in the greenhouse visiting her plant. "Hello, Miss Dora," he greeted her gently. "You're relaxing?" The greenhouse certainly had a calm aura about it.
He was watering some of the plants in here, checking out some things. He was missing a watering can, but he was pretty sure he knew what had happened to it. So he used his second favorite one to water with. The mundane rose bushes in here really needed a drink, and it was warm in his greenhouses today. While cold, the sun was up sooooo high in the sky. It made Paul feel almost lazy...like, in the summer, when he was home, he was SUPER lazy because it was so damn hot in Tuscany. "You do realize that your geranium is trying to eat your hair, right?" he chuckled.

Dora heard the man coming before he spoke, but she didn't turn to see who it was. Because at the moment? She didn't quite care, to be honest. "Yeaaaah. Super relaxed, " she said with a bit oF snark. Had he ever had his hair chewed by a geranium? It was kind of stressful. What if she bit off a chunk or something?!
"Her favorite past time, really. If she chews any off I'll just charm it back or something. " Or cry. She felt like doing that anyway. Was it summer yet? She was so ready to be home with Casper. UGH.
Manners, tho. "Having a good year, professor? " She hadn't been taking Herbology at NEWT level even though she had gotten aN O on her OWLs. Foreign language specialists didn't need to know advanced stuff on plants, right?

Foreign language specialists didn't need to know advanced stuff on plants, right? Paul chuckled at the sarcasm. "More relaxed than you could be, I suppose," he said gently as he moved to water the color changing roses now. They seemed to spruce right up as soon as he watered them, too. They were very bright red, currently, but as he brushed his fingertips along a few of them, they turned a creamy white. It made there Herbologist smile. "You want me to get it to stop??? I dont want her to chew your hair off!" he exclaimed in a worried manner. And snort. SNORT. Paul snorted at her question.
A GOOD YEAR?
It was likely one of the most stressful years he had had in a loooooong time. "I...I guess I can't complain. You know..." he shrugged a little and pulled his wand out to trim some of the color-changing roses bushes of their dead leaves. "Just....sometimes you have harder years than others." He smiled at Dora, though. "But all will be well."

That was true, she supposed, but all she could muster was a one shouldered shrug. She still had feelings about Myers... and not great ones (even though they were beginning to fade with time now). "I could be a lot more things." Vague. But really she could be better, more relaxed, more focused, more of a friend. A whole host of things.
"Her. Not 'it'. Her name is Lola, " she said with her irritation clear in her voice. Myers of ALL people should know how close she was to her geranium. She was a pet, basically. A beloved pet.
But that snort, tho.
Dora turned to face the man now. That was interesting. "Most of my years are hard. Please explain why you're having such a bad year." Her tone made it clear she wasn't taking no for an answer.

"Certainly. Anyone could be a lot more things." He took a seat next to her. He wouldn't correct her....the plant honestly probably did have a "sex" per say depending on which parts it had. Most plants had both parts, though, so her probably wasn't accurate, but Paul did the same thing. He named his favorite ones, called them gender specific pronouns and all. So he'd humor Dora, of course. "Sorry. Her. You've had her for a while now, haven't you?" he smiled.
And no....he did not want to get into everything with a student. Lines and all. " IMPs is stressful to me," he said simply. "Being away from home is always hard for extended periods of time, even at my age. But this year is a bit hard for me...for various reasons." And he wasn't going to get deep into things with you, Dora Umbridge. You are a student, and do not need to be burdened with your teacher's problems. Paul would never.
He had a husband and friends for that.

He had a husband and friends for that. True again. Dora smiled what was likely to look a bit sad, but whatever. She wondered idly what the man thought he could be MORE of. She liked to pick people apart while talking. Only in her head though. Mostly.
And the girl had grown up with an experimental herbologist teaching her the ins and outs of all things plants. Quite literally. So yes, she knew what made the variation between male and female plants. Lola had, after all, been bred and grown specifically for her. But her personality was distinctly female to anyone who had ever spent time around her. " Since my second year. My cousin grew her specifically for me. I wanted a fanged rose, but I'm glad I got her instead. Fanged roses are a bit temperamental. Lola can be, but she isn't as a general rule. " Sassy? Yes. Always. And as if in response to Dora speaking about her, Lola flicked one of her long tentacle like "limbs" out and poked Dora in the head. Hehe. At least she had stopped chewing her hair, right?
Dora listened to the man... and squinted. " IMPS stresses YOU out? Imagine how we feel. Being used for some agenda... which I havent figured out yet, but I have a working theory. " Mostly thanks to her former Auror Uncle. Part of her wished he was still at the Ministry. SIGHS. But THAT was something she wouldn't go into detail about. She knew she sounded like a conspiracy theorist. Legit, she did.
But she cared not.
" I'm sorry to hear that. I used to have a really hard time being here, but I got used to it. " She didn't pretend to understand HIS particular issues, but she could kind of commiserate. " Ever thought about leaving here? " Just curiosity asking, really. She wondered just how many of the professors doubted their decisions to teach at Hogwarts... or anywhere really.
But mostly Hogwarts given all of the ridiculous stuff that happened there.
And dangerous.
Now shady.

| A Poop * k8 * "Fanged Geraniums are wonderful. They're like pets...only they don't follow you around." He rolllllled his eyes slightly because ZELDA THE COLLIE would follow Paul anywhere. He was her person. Granted, he had brought her to Hogwarts for this reason, and he didn't MIND being followed around exactly, but it definitely got old sometimes. Milton was much better with the dogs, honestly.
Although, at her next comment, he raised an eyebrow. "I...have little idea of what you're talking about. Pretty sure Professors Moxley and Hawthorne just wanted to mingle the students, honestly." He smiled a little. "I know it must be difficult. But you are doing brilliantly." The smile was a bit sad, because Henrietta had been eliminated, but it was okay. He had other students to cheer for. His Hufflepuff heart would just have to deal. "Not everyone has a hidden agenda." Bless Paul. Naively believing in the good in people. "Your theory intrigues me, though. If you'd like to share..."
Paul turned to her....and decided to answer honestly her next question. About...leaving here. It was often something he wondered about. "The thing is...I was in retirement. Enjoying my quiet life at the vineyard with my private Greenhouses. Milton is a busy man. He's very business man like that, always wanting meetings and tastings and...whatnot." He leaned back on his elbows. "I was growing bored. Very...very bored. And I missed teaching...I taught for a long time in my younger days...older students, of course. And I missed Hogwarts and just..the opportunity arose and I couldn't pass it up. And I love it here. It's...It's home, that's for sure. Of course I think about leaving." He looked over at the geranium. "But I think I'd regret it too much. I love teaching, I love my students, and I just...yeah. I don't have leaving here soon in my mind at all. I guess you could say...I have my rough days where I just want to go home." He smiled though. "But the rewards far outweigh those feelings."
Who knew he'd be having a heart-to-heart with Dora Umbridge today.

Dora nodded as he spoke. She understood that... but she didn't mind animals following her around. Not at all, actually. Her dog, Expecto, had done that for like forever. Not to mention Spike and Addy's animals did the same whenever she came around. Heh. The lemurs especially liked to mess with her and steal her shiny things. "I wish Lola could follow me around. Or at least stay in my dorm with me. I miss her terribly," she said with a sigh. Or like... could she just sleep out here? It would be a right sight more peaceful probably.
Mingle a bunch of rabid students with horrible temperaments with the Hogwarts kids? Super idea that was. Dora couldn't help the eye roll that left her. Truly she had tried. "Thanks for that, Professor." The compliment, that was. She felt like... the whole thing was going to fall out from under her any minute, but she felt a bit smug nonetheless. Being underestimated was always useful. "Oh no. I wouldn't like to. Share my theory. I don't want to ever sway anyone to thinking my way... So I tend to not share such things." And she didn't know if she quite trusted the man yet. Yeah she was still holding a bit of a grudge.
But now Dora watched the man as he spoke. Captivated as he told her more about himself and his life. Regardless of it being VERY little, she did appreciate when older people opened up. Like she was basically an adult and would never tell anyone else the things she knew about people. Ever. "That sounds like a lovely life, sir. But I think I get it. Not doing the things YOU love sounds like a drag." Like she couldn't imagine not doing the things she had worked so hard to LEARN how to do. "Well I think you're a great asset to our school, sir. I am glad you are here... and I think you have learnt from some of the early mistakes you made. Which is awesome."
And with a sigh she looked back to her plant and frowned. "Sometimes I get worried about going off to university. I don't know what my dad is going to do with Al and I gone at the same time. I will worry about him so much... And I don't even know for sure which Uni I am going to attend, but I know which one I do... and then I have to be sure that Casper and I end up at the same place because that is our plan... and it's just worrisome. Some days I wish I could go back to being a first year who didn't care what people thought or what they did. Innocence had its perks."

| A Poop * k8 * "Well, if you were in Hufflepuff, I'd let you keep in the garden we have in there. Granted, maybe she needs a bit more sunlight than we get down there, but...still. I think she'd be okay." Alas, it was not a thing. "Can you imagine carrying her around on your back, though?" he asked with a looooot of snorting/chuckling going on. "Silly!"
It was an interesting view to have on....views, really. "Never become a politician, then," he teased, winking at her. But that's really...all he felt politicians did, to an extent. It wasn't a good or bad thing; it was part of the job, wasn't it?
Heh. Mistakes. Paul had to laugh. SOOOO many mistakes like, he had collected over the many many years he had spent in this world. "Everyone makes mistakes. I am not ashamed of my own. You embrace them, you learn." He said simply. He didn't mind speaking about them to people, either. But it got a liiiiittle dicey when he felt he hadn't made a mistake and someone disagreed with him, but that was different altogether, again.
Ah.
Uni worries.
In the past few months, he had been approached with similar worries. Must have been this time of year...after Christmas holidays, looking into summer and beyond...all that stuff. "Innocence does indeed. But so does experience." Paul smirked. "What will you do if your plan doesn't follow through perfectly?" He asked curiously.
Plans had a way of falling apart.

Dora looked at him and squinted a bit. "Maybe you could convince Professor Marchand to put a garden in the tower? I bet he would if you spoke to him. And I would help take care of it." Big eyes at the man! She could speak to him too, of course. But... what? An amused look crossed her features, but she didn't speak on it. She was, against her will, imagining carrying Lola on her back, though. That would be lovely, actually.
"If it was in a job situation it would be different. But I don't think trying to make people dislike others or to be suspicious of others is very helpful. Like... I think I might be responsible for Derf thinking you are a Dark Wizard. But I didn't do it on purpose." Sheepish... that was what she was. And truly she hadn't meant to do that. Granted, Derf typically took things too far. Heh. No fault of anyone else.
"You don't understand, sir. They have to go perfectly. Especially now that... well things have changed in my life. Big things. Uni and Casper have to go perfectly," she said with a very sad lilt to her voice. The demeanor of the girl noticeably shifted in that moment span. Her heart was breaking all over again. The constant loop of that fight with her father was ringing in her ears again... tears threatened to come.
GET IT TOGETHER UMBRIDGE!
No crying in front of Professors. No one needed to know about these things.

A garden in the Gryffindor towers.
As much as Paul would have LOVED it...hmm. There was a garden in the Hufflepuff common room, and while it had been there even before he was made head of the house, he wondered if...well, it was what made the badger common room special, right? He was milling over it, wondering if it was childish of him to think the reciprocation of ideas was a tad irritating. It is a bit childish, you man child, he thought to himself, but he merely smiled. "Perhaps. Professor Marchand, I think, seems busy as of late." He could hardly catch a word with the man recently.
....
Wait, what?
Paul made a face. "A...dark wizard? Me?" he asked in a soft voice. "Is that why..." Derf's BEHAVIOR made a lot more sense if this WAS the case. WOW. "Um. Does he still think that?" And the boy's fear of plants probably didn't help.
BUT PAUL MYERS. A DARK WIZARD. It was laughable. Paul couldn't help it-----he burst out into laughter. "A D-D-DARK WIZARD, THOUGH!" Oh dear. Oh deaaaaaaar.
He was so overcome with the thought that absolutely nothing else......was registering. A DARK. WIZARD.

Professor Marchand seemed BUSY?
HA! That actually made Dora laugh out loud. The man seemed something, but busy wasn't what she would have said. Not at all. But anyway... "Sure. Well maybe I will create one myself. If he doesn't like it I guess he can take it down." I mean... their common room got more light than the others, anyway. Made more sense. HMPH.
YOLO
But what was this?
Myers was awfully... something about Dark wizards. It became evident that the man knew nothing about her family or he wouldn't seem so disgusted by the thought in front of her, would he?
Hmmm. Sometimes she thought he had no couth, this man. But that wasn't something she would say... Instead she went without something less offensive. "I think Dark and Light is on a spectrum, sir. Not all people who are deemed Dark are necessarily BAD. Besides we all have a little of both in us." Some just tipped more to one side or another more often than not. She, however, prided herself on toeing the line, so to speak.
A shrug though. She had no idea what the boy thought still. He totally still thought the man was Dark, but she wasn't going to tell him that. That was Myers' thing to handle, wasn't it? "Reckon you would have to ask him, sir."
Smirk.
That was what he got for changing the topic of conversation to SOLELY focus on him and his hang ups. She was only having a real life crisis and all.
HMPH.

Self crisis or not, Paul was not always selfless. It was something he was acutely aware of, too, and best he not share this little detail about himself often. He was Paul Myers, the nicest, sweetest, oldest man in the world.
Not really. He could be judgmental, selfish, self-focused....with best intentions most of the time. He listened to her thoughts on dark magic, and he wondered if it was prudent to continue the conversation. Dora was an IMPs champion, though, and she was a clever girl. Clever, and good at magic, and mature. He supposed he shouldn't stifle an interesting conversation. "Some people believe as you do." He said simply. "While I will give anyone the benefit of the doubt, I sometimes wonder if dabbling in dark magic is necessary. Curiosity aside, I just....wonder." And no, Myers had not a clue about her family. Maybe he did now, but....assumptions were rude, weren't they? "I agree that we all...have both lightness, and darkness, in us. "
He paused for a second, then, "And for the record, I think everything you're worried about.....I think you'll be okay. You work hard, Dora. You'll achieve everything you want to achieve, especially with that attitude. And you have IMPs to add to your resume, so to speak. Any school would be lucky to have you." And pffft.

The road to Hell was paved with good intentions. Or that was what the girl had been told most of her life. People did messed up things to others and needed to just OWN it. Like really own it. The whole argument about good intentions always irked Dora. I wasn't TRYING to be rude. My intentions were good when I told you you looked fat in that dress! PFFT.
Rubbish.
"Well, sir, I think the argument could be made that is dabbling in any sort of magic necessary. Muggles seem to get along just fine without it," she said with a small smile. Logic wasn't sound, plant man. "And we absolutely DO have both inside of us. Absolutely. There can't be good without bad. An internal balance I guess you could say. Just like some plants are poisonous when ingested, but you can touch them and smell them and they are safe. At least that is what I think of. Certain innocuous properties, but can be deadly also." Or maybe all of those jumbled thoughts only made sense to her.
Sue her! She was having an off day.
BLAH.
But his next words made her squint a bit. Not in like anger or anything. Just squint. Had the man ever said anything genuinely nice to her before? She was unsure. It caused a stir inside her chest. Just a tiny one.
Teensie.
"I don't know how true that is, but it's the idea. I don't plan to fail at anything." Yet she often did. Lol.
Not really funny, but whatever.

Paul listened and took in her words. Again, he was shocked at like...how could she not see she was dead clever? "You've got a point, I'll give you that," and he wished he was sipping on some lemon water. Or tea. Tea would be nice! "Granted, with your example, some plants really are nicer than others. Because there are plants that exist that aren't poisonous. Or are you saying we're all different are serve our purposes or are useful despite what our temperament or...personality is?" This was proving to be interesting. Talking about people's use always made him feel rather icky, though. Humans existed for more than just their use to humanity. At least, Paul thought so.
"If you were a plant, Dora, which plant would you be?" he asked with a playful gleam in his eye. Paul always thought about this question, and there were quite a few options for himself, but she hadn't asked about him. Plus, he was much more interested in what she thought of herself.
Paul doubted she would fail. And even if she did, it wasn't the end. She could always try again.
