It's a frosty, but beautiful 15th of December. Up to a decimetre of fresh snow has fallen during the night, but the morning sky is clear and greets you with a pale sun glowing above as you make your way down the path from the castle to the lake bank with a few minutes to spare to 9 o'clock. The snow has encased the grounds in its snowy glittery white sheen and most of the birds that inhabit the forest and grounds have flown to warmer countries. Mr Baldvinson has cleared the path from most of the snow, but watch out so you don't slip and fall over your feet. It can be icy. I hope you've dressed warmly in winter gear or it will be an unpleasant lesson.
After coming down to the lake bank and stepping out on the snow covered sand you're immediately hit in the face by an icy wind coming from a long way out on the lake that reddens your cheeks and waters your eyes. When the wind momentarily wanes and you wish to go back up to the warm castle your eyes lands on Professor Vance that stands in a dark green long sleeved and hemmed coat and black boots next to a large fire pit where a big hearty fire is lit. The traditional fire noises greets you as you make your way over to where the Professor is standing next to the pit.
Professor Vance greets each and every one of the students with cheery smiles and head nods as she gestures with a gloved hand for them all in turn to find themselves seats on the blankets scatted out around the big fire pit. As you take a seat and let the warmth from the fire pit warm your limbs up, you notice big sacks of what looks like salt and large stacks of wood behind Professor Vance. Whatever can this lesson be about? Contemplate that as you wait and chat quietly with your peers until the lesson starts.

What was it with Professors and insisting on holding lessons outside when the ground was snow covered? Especially when they had a perfectly warm classroom INSIDE the castle.
Skylar had dressed warm with gloves and boots and a winter coat, but still, it was rather ridiculous, in the fourth year's humblest of opinions. And it was that sort of mind-numbing cold as well, but fortunately Professor Vance at least had a fire going. "M-m-morning P-p-p-professor," Sky chattered ... making her way over toward the fire, as she held her gloved hands out to the fire to thaw.

Bundled up, Cassie made her way cautiously across the grounds. The last thing she needed was to fall and get hurt or the very least damp on the way to Divination. Curiosity stuck the fifth year as to what type of divination they would be dealing with outside in the fresh snow. Especially given it was still quite chilly out to meet outside. Nothing she had come across before, but then she didn’t do much reading up on divination outside of their required work. She just hoped that maybe…just maybe…Professor Vance had set up some of the precautions other professors did when having class outside in the winter.
Oh goody! There was a fire pit for warmth. “Good morning, Professor,” she greeted the woman with a polite smile as she got to the meeting place. Cassie figured she must be early given there was only one other student there beside her. She moved to take a seat on a blanket to the right, claiming one of the spots nearest the fire.

Divination time! She was feeling all nice and warm because Olivia had opted to wear a fuzzy onesie underneath her robes. Not just any kind of onesie- a galaxy coloured one. She and Noelle had made a pact to wear them and Olivia planned to follow through on it. Unfortunately (yet also fortunately), the onesie was not visible due to her long sleeve shirt and robes that were on. Ahh nice and warm indeed.
She had slipped only once on her way over. She had mistakenly stepped on a shiny, slick area which contained black ice and ended up falling on her lower back. Olivia could certainly feel the bruise. But soon she would be seated because she saw the Professor, some students, and blankets and fires!! Ooh... Nice and warm. "Morning Professor," said Olivia with a happy smile. "I hope you are wel!" She waved to Skylar and Cassie and then went to find a seat close to the fire. Ahh warmer.

Shay was dressed with as many layers as she could possibly get on for the Divination class. Feeling like Randy from that old muggle movie "A Christmas Story", she made her way down to the lake. What was it with the professors? They all seemed to want to have outdoor classes when it was ridiculously cold. Feeling the biting wind, Shay pulled her scarf up further over her face.
Spotting the fire pit, Shay was somewhat relived. At least they would have a source of warmth during their lesson. Pulling her scarf down momentarily, she said, "Hello Professor Vance". Seeing an empty blanket, Shay sat down and tried to curl herself into a ball for warmth. Her eyes scanned the scene and noticed the materials that were present for today's class. She had no idea what they would be doing and no idea why it needed to be outside. She guessed she'd find out soon enough.

It was too early to be heading all this way out on the grounds in the snow. Ugh. The Ravenclaw felt like she'd just only gotten through her breakfast--which didn't help with how sluggish and stuffed she felt--and now she had to trudge all the way across the grounds in this weather.
Despite bundling up warmly, Jessa still cast a warming charm on herself, just to ensure she didn't meet an unfortunate, frozen end before she even got to the lesson, a lesson that would be by the lake today it seemed. Oh and look, a fire! It brought back memories of the Transfiguration class they'd had. Would they be throwing daggers and making predictions? Would they be making daggers with the smoke from this fire? Was that a magical fire??
Jessa slowed her pace as she got closer, being sure not to get too close until she found out for fear of triggering her asthma. "Good morning, Professor." She greeted, still some ways off from the group. "That wouldn't happen to be real smoke, would it?"

It was like a dream come true, and given the early hour, Sam had to double check her schedule that this was, in fact, a divination lesson. Not only were they out of that nose-tingling, sneeze-inducing, stuffiest of rooms at the top of the castle, they were outside in the brisk Scottish winter with a HUGE fire pit.
A grin easily spread across her face, probably an unusual sight to Professor Vance, and she drew nearer to the flames to warm her fingerless-gloved hands. "Good morning Professor!" she greeted cheerily. What this all had to with Divination, she had no clue, but it was awesome all the same.
Kitty made her way down to the lesson, head bowed slightly so her chin was completely buried in her scarf. GAA it was cold! Why did they have so many lessons outdoors, anyway? Not that she was going to complain, she had enough serious things to worry about as it was.
Professor Vance was in a good mood though. "Good morning Professor Vance," she greeted her as cheerfully as she could. "How are you? Cold, isn't it?"
Oh, it was so COLD. Etta shivered, in spite of her warm clothing, as she carefully made her way down to the lake. What was the point of having a lesson outside this early in the morning? Making very sure she didn't step on any ice at all, she finally made it. She stood for a moment before the cold wind started to make her eyes water.. oh, goodness. This definitely wasn't a very good start to the day.
But.. HEY. She quickly walked over to the fire and enjoyed the warmth radiating from the pit, giving a sigh of relief. Phew. She was so done with winter already. Soon, once she felt like herself again.. she noticed the professor for the first time. Oops. "Good morning, professor!" She gave her bright and cheerful smile.

After the mole lesson, Stasya had almost asked Abey how he managed to boycott some lessons and stopped coming. Even though she hadn’t gotten kicked by the hippogriff yet and she still wasn’t planning on being kicked. Just the suggestion had scarred her, but she had still made her way out to the lake after eating breakfast in the barn with Dobby and her puffskein. Wearing enough layers that she was at least sort of warm, but also sort of wishing she had fur like a lot of the creatures in the barn to be warmer, she looked at the giant fire pit with interest.
Brushing her hair out of her face with a gloved hand, she gave Professor Vance a smile as she headed over toward where Jessa was, waving at Etta as she walked. “Good morning Professor Vance,” she said brightly, before she’d turned curious eyes toward the Ravenclaw at the question about the smoke. Was she going to be okay? Maybe they could move a blanket over to where they were now. She didn’t want Jessa to not be okay.

Vivian needed to understand the logic of holding classes outside when it was clearly snowing and cold. The Slytherin wore a sweater on top of her shirt, a coat over the sweater, gloves on her hands, a beanie on her head, and pretty much covered herself with comfy winter clothes... because she wasn't exactly the kind of person who liked absolutely extreme temperatures. It was a pretty obvious now because as she trekked towards the spot where they were to hold their class, Vivian's nose was red as a tomato across her pale face.
Joining the class, Vivian tried to smile at the Professor but it looked more like an awkward one given today's weather. "Good morning, Professor..." the blonde greeted her Head of House, before going over to sit next to Skylar. She hoped the warmth of the fire and her own body heat would suffice.
If they were going to do some sort of warmth divination, Vivian couldn't wait.

Ah, finally the season of snow was upon them. Sure, it meant a lot of work on the grounds with all the snow but it was finally the temperature at where he felt comfortable. Haraldur shuffled over the grounds from the hut to where the divination lesson would take place. He was wearing a big, furry coat to keep him warm and it dragged after him in the snow.
"Hello, kids!" He announced as he closed in on the group of students. Did they really think there would be a big fire on his grounds without him present? His grounds... That wasn't technically correct but who liked technicalities anyway?
"Miss Vance, good morning to you." He smiled at her and walked over to where she was standing. He didn't sit down next to the students, mainly because he would take up too many blankets that were meant for the kiddos. "Beautiful morning."
Yes. He was in a good mood. Class outside in the snow! What a time to be alive.

Laurel was thinking about warming a teapot on the fire so that she could get a nice cup of tea to drink and warm her hands around while she waited for her students to arrive. It was certainly a crisp morning. The arrival of Skylar Diggory distracted her from thoughts of tea. Smiling over at the sensibly dressed snake she greeted. "Good morning Skylar!" Hopefully the fire would stop the girl from freezing.

She scrapped her tea brewing idea as it seemed that now the students we're going to be making their arrivals. A quick glance at her watch told her that it was still a good 10 minutes to class start. Cassandra of the eagles came up to the fire pit and Laurel flashed her a kind smile. "Good morning Cassie,"

Yes, she had seen that the girl would have a little ungraceful fall on some ice on the way to class. Smiling she added "I'm well dear, thank you for asking." She'd be even better when they could get things started...

Shay was so bundled up in winter gear and a scarf that covered most of her face against the wind and icy cold that Laurel almost didn't recognize the lioness until she greeted her. Smiling cheerily at the young girl replied. "Good morning Shay!" It looked like most so far had been reading her class notice carefully and had dressed appropriately for the season.

Laurel was giving her lesson plan a last once over when Jessa made her arrival to the warm fire pit. Looking up from her notes she flashed the eagle a warm smile. "Good morning Jessa," slipping her lesson notes back into her extended coat pocket she gave the fire a glance before she affirmed to the girl. "Yes its real smoke from the fire." Out here she didn't need to make pretend fires after all.

The cheery greeting that Laurel got from Sam Tyler upon her arrival to the fire pit was very unexpected and a very pleasant morning surprise. Returning the eagle's grin with one of her own she responded happily "Good morning Sam!" It was nice to see at least one student that seemed to be enjoying the winter chill.

The first prefect to arrive was Kitty bundled up from head to toe. Laurel appreciated the attempt on the girl's part to sound cheerful when in fact she was freezing. Smiling cheerily in returning Laurel said "Good morning Kitty, I'm good. How are you? Yes, it's a bit crisp, but winter wouldn't be winter without some cold temperatures right?"

Etta soon followed after Kitty making the prefect total two. It was of course not something Laurel counted on but it was nice to have a few prefects on hand if things got out of hand which they rarely did in her lessons. When Etta's eyes met hers she greeted back brightly "Good morning Etta,"

Laurel was surveying the fire in the pit when Stasya made her entrance around the fire known. The little lioness got a warm smile from her as she peeled off her gloves and stuck them in one of her many coat pockets. "Good morning Stasya," she chirped before adding on a few pieces of wood on the fire.

Her snakes aside from Skylar were sleeping in or running late to class it seemed. Maybe she should ask the Baron to wake the snakes up with his loud chain rattling and distinctive voice some morning so that they all got up to breakfast before classes. Laurel was still mulling over that idea when Vivian arrived to her little lesson space. Smiling warmly over at the snakette she responded cheerily "Good morning Vivian." At least that snake was up on time.

With a smile pursing on her lips where stood next to Haraldur she said with her eyes travelling over the assembled students faces. "Welcome to another lesson in the noble art of diving the past, present and future! It pleases me greatly to see that you've all dressed in warm winter gear or this would have been a very miserable and cold lesson to sit through." It was never fun to freeze.
Now why this location for the lesson? "We are out here this morning in the crisp wintery december air because we're going to have a lesson on Pyromancy; fire divination. Laurel paused her to give the student's time to register and react to her words and also show that they were paying attention. "We're going to broaden our understanding of Pyromancy today but first can everyone give me one fact that they know about Pyromancy/fire divination?"

Ah well, it was probably obvious that they were going to be studying something related to fire, considering their current freezing situation and the set up of the class. Should be a good thing, Vivian thought, because she didn't want to just sit here and wait for the cold to immobilise her. Despite the coldness of the air and just the weather in general, the Slytherin her best to sit up and listen to every word Professor Vance said. And the groundskeeper was here too, which made the blonde curious.
So... what did she know about fire divination? Not much, to be honest. While her ideas were still fresh and nobody had answered the question, Vivian raised her hand. Sorry, guys, but this was survival of the fittest. "There are many types of pyromancy, Professor, one of which is capnomancy," she shared. That was the only type she knew, anyway. LOL. But now that she had given her thought about the subject, Vivian was thinking...
Pyromancy. Fire.
Andrei Romanos.
The blonde suddenly fell quiet and wrapped the blanket around her more tightly. He was probably taming dragons and undergoing training on fire-bending at Durmstrang at this very moment. She didn't know if he had just turned into dragon toast or something. Vivian just sort of sat there, listening to everybody's answers and swallowing the fact that she did miss that Romanian boy with the flute and the ability to make her heart skip.
Merlin, she did NOT want to be feeling this during class. Vivian looked back up at her Head of House and tried her best to just listen. Yes, listen to class and be a good student.

She turned pink when Professor Vance had seen her ungraceful slip on the ice. Merlin. She had seen it? Now she wondered who else had seen it. The Gryffindor became a little bit more self-conscious for a moment before relaxing once more. "It's alright thank you. A little sore but alright," she mentioned with a small smile. She'd have a bruise but bruises eventually went away... with time. Once she had taken a seat, she noticed the Groundskeeper was here. He got a nod.
Then class had begun and they were learning about Pyromancy. Fire Divination? Incredible! She had always loved the idea of being able to read messages through fire. A fact about Pyromancy. She raised her hand to offer a fact. A historical one because she felt more comfortable with that."Professor, I believe pyromancy was named a "forbidden" art, along with necromancy, during the renaissance period."
Nothing quite got the Gryffindor excited about Divination than FIRE. The resident pyromaniac was simply stuck staring at the flames as the professor asked her question... like...
She HEARD her and knew an answer, but she was a little side tracked at the moment. But when she was able to blink a few times and look up she had a peaceful sort of smile on her face. "Pyromancy was one of the earliest forms of divination. It is thought that it was even practiced at the Temple of Athena during Greek times, " she said with a nod before turning her attention back to the flames.
Melbourne was overly excited about Divinations class. The moment that Professor Vance brought up Pyromancy her smile seemed to triple in size…Professor Baldvinsson got an exaggerated wave as he joined their little class. Tugging her cloak tighter around her body Melbourne raaaaaaaaaised her hand immediately.
She knew some things about Divinations at least which was mainly due to the fact that she thought that Professor Vance was the nicest…prettiest Professor…the only one that she thought even rivaled her was Professor Hirsch and he was a total hunk…sure, sure she appreciated her face but it was more than that. The professor had an almost ethereal glow to her self, a radiant kindness that made her classroom feel utterly welcoming…kind of like how Professor Kitteridge had been before he had retired.
Really, she just liked the kindness that she seemed to always bestow upon her students. Hand in the air…look at the hand! Melbourne was called on finally and she just grinned, ”like Vivian mentioned there are different forms of Pyromancy! Other than Capnomancy the one I really enjoyed looking up were Alomancy and Botanomacy” she paused for a second before adding ”however…I have a question would it be safe to assume that any form of pyromancy that involves burning any item could be a form of Causinomancy? Divination by burning and casting items into the fire…because with Botanomancy and Alomancy you do tend to cast into fire which in turn would be Causinomancy…right?” sure, she was questioning things but it probably could be safe to assume that the little known form of divinations was likely a bigger blanket term for all of the pyromancy readings that involved casting things into flames.

When the Professor greeted the Groundskeeper, Skylar had to turn and wondered how she had missed his arrival, except for the fact that she had been frozen. He should sit near her; he looked like he radiated heat and could be her own personal space heater. Not that Vivian's body heat wasn't enough, but well, it wasn't. Baldvinsson had more of it.
Oh, what was that? The professor needed the airy grounds rather than a hot and stuffy classroom? But didn't Divination require hot and stuffy? It seemed as though that was a thing, anyway.
Pyromancy, how interesting. And the one that Skylar knew about was mentioned, by Vivian nonetheless, but she didn't provide much in the way of what it was, which left room for her to elaborate. "More about capnomancy," Skylar began, "It's divination by using the smoke. Whereas thin, straight smoke plumes are meant to be good omens. Larger smoke plumes means the opposite." Oops? That was kind of like three facts, but she couldn't describe one omen without the other.

Sam flashed a grin at Dora as the subject of today's lesson was confirmed. Of course it would be pyromancy, with a fire like that. And this was a topic Sam could get into. Way more fun than counting and interpreting moles! She wiggled to get more comfortable on her blanket, probably the most alert she'd ever been in a Divination lesson.
"It involves looking at the shape, size and intensity of the fire," Sam volunteered. "Sometimes after having thrown something in it, like twigs or herbs."

Ohai Stasya! Jessa smiled at her friend as she came to a stop by her. Nice to see a familiar face. She thought to move just a little closer for the sake of the Gryffindor who seemed keen to remain by her but then the Professor said it was real smoke and suddenly Jessa found herself taking measured steps back.
Real smoke? No thanks. She'd have to pass on that from this safe distance. So long as her classmates and the Professor maintained their volume, she would still hear just fine from over here.
The Groundskeeper gained a glance from her, but the Ravenclaw's attention was once again on the flames. For as much as she loved fire, she knew when it was and wasn't okay to get closer. This was one of those was nots. Real smoke provoked real asthma attacks and they were quite a ways off from the Hospital Wing considering everything.
"It's considered by some to be unreliable. Those who try to divine images with the flames themselves often end up seeing different things relating to the same event so it's unclear who really has the right interpretation--if any of them do." They couldn't all be right. An event could only have so many outcomes and no more.

Etta wondered why the groundskeeper had joined them but didn't give it much thought. She gave him a curious look before turning her attention back towards the professor who just announced that they'd be learning about fire divination. Interesting.. even if she practically knew nothing about it. So guesswork it was. She looked thoughtful for a little while, trying to come up with an answer. Um. She could say that she had absolutely no idea but.. you know, that wasn't cool.
"It's an ancient form of divination. The shape of the flames are interpreted the way one sees them, I think? And each person would probably have a different interpretation.. I'd assume." .. and that's all she knew or could guess. At least she tried, right? That should count for something.
It was WAY too cold out here. Emmeline had several layers on under her Hogwarts robes, AND her charmed winter cloak on, and gloves and a Gryffindor scarf AND a hat, and it was still too cold! Divination was usually an inside lesson, and Emmeline would have preferred that it stayed that way when there was snow and coldness. Plus, they were by the lake, which meant lots of icy breezes that were bad enough to pass through on her way to the barn and nursery, thank you. Her face brightened at the sight of the huge fire; not only would that provide more warmth (yay!), but her wand was supposed to be particularly good at fire spells. Not that they usually used their wands in this class, but she could always hope. After greeting the professor and Professor B, Emmeline made her way over to Jessa and Stasya as usual. She smiled and was just about to say hi to them when Professor Vance started the lesson. Guess she'd been barely on time -- oops.
She did hear the Divination professor answer Jessa's question, and noticed how Jessa had backed up from the smoke a bit. She flashed back to a recent Transfiguration lesson they'd had that involved smoke, but Jessa had been okay with it then. The Ravenclaw must have some problem with real smoke, and Emmeline frowned in concern. If real smoke was a problem for her, surely the professor could make magic smoke like Professor Stewart had? "You okay, Jessa? Is it the smoke?", she asked the older girl quietly.
What did she know about pyromancy? Well...: "One kind of pyromancy is looking for fire-omens, or specific signs in the flames that predict the future." Right?

Again, the blonde wasn't 100% sold on Divination, but here she was, again and again...and apparently, they were going to have some help today from one of her favorites. HELLO, MR. BALDVINSSON. With a gracious nod of her head to the intriguing man, Liv went about dictating to her Quick Quotes until they actually began the lesson. There was simply too much floating about in her headspace at the moment and she didn't really feel up to chattering with her peers. For once in her life, Olivia just didn't know what to say or talk about.
She had nothing.
Besides, the December air was cutting and chilling her deep down into her very bone marrow. Luckily, she wouldn't need to worry about her hands being too frozen with writing. Thank you, Quick Quotes. Thank you for being an amazing invention... Also, thank you to Blaise Bellaire...
Oh, they were getting started.... With a small sigh, Liv cut her attention away from making the quill trace out a pair of eyes. A very particular set of eyes. Unique and...warm...
Oh, Pyromancy..... Well, okay, yes, they couldn't very well learn about fire in a crowded classroom. The whole place would've gone up in a giant blaze of glory. These lessons always had a practical portion.... How was Mr Baldvinsson helping again? Was their Flying instructor more talented than he'd lead them all to believe? What was that man hiding from the lot of them.
She saw you, Mr Baldvinsson. Eyes on you....Also, Jessa was getting a small smile. Just because she had a similar outlook to Liv and Liv appreciated having someone like-minded close by.
"Followers of Hephaestus were said to practice pyromancy. In the Greek pantheon, Hephaestus's power ruled over fire and the forge." Greek mythology. She was fan, sorry. They should've known what her answer was going to be... Also, she hated repeating answers, so that was something that hadn't been mentioned yet..... "Would this also make us followers of Hephaestus?"

Derf was definitely bundled up and well prepared for the Decemeber weather. He had even SOMEHOW figured out how to put a Heating Charm on his robes without making it feel like he was walking around literally wearing a sauna all day. He had to be careful though when it came to such charms and his trousers, least Scamander and occasionally Picketta suffer the consequences. But the Hufflepuff was EXTRA careful and that was no chance in either creature being harmed. So he was ALL smiles as he bound down to today's Divination lesson AND since it was outside this time he took extra great care to check the snow for any hidden messages the professor may have written. You know...like she had done in the sand last term. Not that the second year actually listened to instructions half the time anyway.
Professor Vance had been greeted with the usual chipper salutations and he felt a sense of deja vu looking at the set up. Only he was preeeeeeeetty sure they were not going to be conjuring daggers in Divination. Ooooooh but was there a form that could use them? If so...Professor Stewart and Professor Vance really should have held a joint lesson, you know? Could have been really neat!
Oh okay but things were starting now and ... well.. he was already distracted right off the bat. Pyromancy brought up A LOT of thoughts about OTHER things, okay? FIRE and magical creatures were like...peanut better and strawberry jam, you know? Or well, maybe they just were to him. But ashwinders, salamanders, dragons, blast-ended skrewts, fire slugs, fire crabs, PHOENIXES...the Hufflepuff was having a hard time reeling himself back in at this point as his blue eyes focused intently on the fire pit and essentially drowned out eeeeeeeeverything else.
Hoo-hoo! How could he forget about THOSE?!
Uh...what had the question been again?
His eyes darted around for SOME sort of clue and naturally fell on Jessa. OH THOUGHT "Psssssssst...you want me to try and do a Bubblehead Charm on you?" he whispered with a little wiggle of his wand. Although Jessa could probably do a much better one on herself.
OH RIGHT THERE WAS A QUESTION!
He should probably try to answer it...and sound mature...but the first thing to blurt out of the second year's mouth when his hand was raised was anything but that.
"S-S-So...could you like...COMBINE pyromancy with like...the type of divination that uses...uuuuuuuuuuuh flatulence?" he asked by means of answering the professor's question. "Like...with blast-ended skrewts, I mean...since they toot FIRE."

Question about if the smoke coming from the giant bonfire over by where most of the others were still making Stasya curious, she had found herself suddenly more between Jessa and the others at the lesson when Professor Vance had confirmed this fire wasn’t a magical one like the ones in Transfiguration had been. But she’d also gotten kind of distracted by the appearance of the groundskeeper and the warmth that she could still feel from the fire even being further away than the others. So distracted that she’d nearly jumped when she had suddenly realized Emmeline and Derf had appeared out of nowhere, and she’d felt herself blush a little.
Especially when she’d heard Emmeline ask Jessa about the smoke and if that was the problem, and then Derf had suggested a bubblehead charm. It was like everyone was paying way more attention than her and she almost missed hearing the actual question asked for the lesson. Pyromancy?
“I think you can use any kind of flame for pyromancy. Like, you could use a candle or something that’s lots smaller than a big bonfire,” she suggested, glancing back at Jessa with her answer too. Because candles had to make less smoke so that made them safer. Plus, she’d found herself looking at Derf again with his answer. Divination by skrewt? In a weird way it sounded like it made sense.
