Default Divination Lesson 1 - Moleosophy

When you climb up into the Divination classroom you're met by at least 20 small circular clothed tables surrounded by chintz armchairs in an rainbow of colours. On each table you see a collection of mirrors in different shapes and sizes. The room is for the day lit by the sunshine coming in from the tower windows as well as the many lamps scattered around the circular room. It is not stiflingly warm but rather pleasantly warm since there is no fire burning under the mantelpiece today, but the heavy perfume or is it incense you smell in air is coming from somewhere.

The shelves running around the circular walls are crammed with dusty feathers, candle stubs, packs of tattered playing cards and countless silvery crystal balls and a vast array of tea cups and you can also spot two charmed full-body mirrors. Near the centre of the room Professor Vance's empty comfy pink high chair stands, along with two small tables covered in parchments about today's lesson topic and her favourite teapot and cups set.

Upon entering Professor Vance appears from somewhere unspecific it could be left or right and greets each student as they trickle into the classroom by saying hello and instructing them to find a table to sit at and to choose a mirror from the table collection.

Shay had some doubt that she could do it, but that didn't mean it couldn't be done.
Shay was the first shoot up her hand to answer. Turning to the lioness Laurel nodded. "Yes, anything is possible and so is that you from your moles like with palm reading for instance can learn new things about yourselves and that's good for when your're maturing into young men and women."

"Definitely. A mole's location on the body would be able to tell you truths, because it is a part of you. No different than having five fingers, or six, moles make up the person you are." That wasn't very descriptive, but her hand was kind of cramping from all the writing.
Skylar supplied her view next. Flashing a glance to her Laurel reminded. "Moles would give your interpreted truths about yourself but since they can appear and dissapear they aren't exactly a distinctive part of you like say birth marks. Something to remember."

"Professor, I think it's sort of like...a self-fulfilling prophecy? If people who believe in Moleosophy get together and one reads the other's moles, maybe they are more likely to buy into and reflect that reading in the way they're acting. Especially if this was back when the practice was popular." ...Did that make sense? She hoped so.
Junia got her hand up and answered next. Looking over at her Laurel nodded encouragingly "Yes, I think you might be right. It can be like a self-fulfilling prophecy at least to those that believe in the practice and see what they've interpreted from their moles as the 'truth' and act accordingly. Moleosophy is though like all forms of Divination not an exact art and based many times on guesses that can be right or wrong."

Massaging her ear's Laurel looked over at Abey. "Don't shout in my class! If you do that again i will deduct points." Sheesh even if he thought he was a Seer he didn't need to be so loud about it. Focusing on Abey's thoughts she said "Interesting, so you think if i interpret your moles and say something about your personality it will be more true than if you do it yourselves? I don't think you are right in that statement since you all know your innate personalites a lot better than i do and know what is true and what isn't about yourselves.

Umm... “I don’t think so,” she started out, “I mean, birth marks are from birth and stay forever. Moles can develop anytime but usually stay too. But sometimes people and their personalities change even when the marks do not.” Did that make sense?
Cassandra sounded her voice next. Looking over to her Laurel said "Good Cassandra, your explaining why you don't think moles can give 'truths' about a persons personality. I will be curious to see if you still think so after our practical activity. A persons does change over time. It'd be weird if it didn't since everyone hopefully matures with age."

Etta answered, raising a hand.
Henrietta's answer was much like many others, but she also brought up zodiac sign that was new. Responding to her Laurel said. "Etta remember to differentiate moles with birth marks. Birth marks are indeed identification marks on the skin, but they unlike moles never dissapear or appear they are always there through your lifetime. The moles can though give a hint about how someone is and what zodic sign you are but that will be your homework assignment which i will announce at the end of the lesson."

Oh well!
Olivia Holden not to be confused with the other lioness by the same name offered Laurel her thoughts. Flashing her kind smile she said "It is possible that practicing moleosopy and interpreting our skin moles can give people if not an appiffany but a look their own personality and how other people might percieved them to be." Unless of course what the moles said didn't match the persons innate personality at all. Nothing was exact.

This coming from someone who went to a magic school where everything was possible may seem strange but a line had to be drawn somewhere and she chose to draw her line at Divination.
Jessa. Gaze turning to the eagle girl Laurel said "That's okay and good Jessa! I'm not going to say that you are wrong to think that moles have nothing to do with how we are or what we'll become. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I will be interested to hear if you still hold on that belief after our practical part of the lesson." Different views just enriched the lesson disscussion and was something she wanted more of.

This one is reminder that I must be careful of where I'm running or I'll hurt myself again." Birthmarks must carry some sort of ancestry as well.
Teddy was contributing too. Good. Flashing a glance over to the snakette she said "Yes, a scar is usually connected to a story and a lesson like you said Teddy to be careful when running so you don't get hurt. Try to different scars from moles though. Moles don't appear because you've injured yourself they can appear anytime. Think of them as a little like facial acne if it helps." Acne spots came and went all the time.

Raising her hand, she said politely: "I don't think so, Professor. I mean, wouldn't that mean that we don't make our own personalities? If the moles we're born with shape those personalities when we're only babies?"
Eyes turning to Emmaline she furrowed her brows slightly in response. "I think you're confusing moles with birth marks. Birth marks you have on your skin since birth while moles appear and dissapear randomly over your skin throughout your lifetime. A mole can't shape your personality you do that through experience, knowledge, fostering and maturity etc. A mole can just give an indication of how you are as a person. If it's true or not that's up to you to say since Divination isn't exact."

She actually quite enjoyed these lessons and learning about the majesty of reading people, but... there were some downsides to sharing too much information. "....Professor, I feel it's dangerous to tell someone who they are based upon some random dark spots on their body." She gestured back to the small Slytherin girl, intending to reaffirm her own thought process. "If you suggest someone is a certain way, then they'll behave in whatever way they've been told, because they'll genuinely think that type of behavior is ingrained in them; like a seed.... IF the person is impressionable, enough.... Like, say, Hogwarts-aged students." ... "But also.... moles are usually an indication of cancer... which is known to kill people." Take THAT for what you will.
Olivia shared her views next and Laurel gazed over to the lioness. "Yes you are correct Olivia. Divination is all about interpretation that indeed can never be 100% certain and the meaning of moles and can vary from person to person just like how you exampled with tea leaves." Pausing she nodded. "You are right Olivia it can be dangerous to put labels on people from moles or first impressions even which is why children are taught to get to know other people a lot better before they decide whether they like someone or don't. Moles aren't supposed to be seen as the TRUTH they are supposed to be a interpretation tool for us to understand ourselves and others better." Laurel was about to let the next student answer when Olivia brought up what she hoped none of her students would meet in their lifetime. Licking her lips she responded. "Yes if moles grow and change colour and shape they can be an indication of cancer but I hope nobody in this class will have to experience that. It's a dreadful disease."

Looking over at Daniel she concluded quickly that he hadn't really been paying attention from the start. In a kind and patient tone Laurel explained. "Daniel, we are talking about moles that you can get all over your skin like birthmarks. A mole isn't a living being and can't talk or die."

"Does-s-s...that mean the prediction is wrong oooooooor....like...s-s-say your mole s-says you are going to win the Prophet's-s-s Million Galleon Draw...but you have it removed becaus-s-se of something...does-s-s that mean that future is-s removed TOO? Derf got involved in the discussion and posed some good questions that Laurel answered thoughtfully with a smile to him. "If you have a mole removed Derf it won't have any impact on your personality. If you're are kind, considerate and loyal you will continue to be that after a mole has been removed since usually a person has more than one mole on their skin. The future can't be removed since the future will still happen. What might happen though is that the prediction of winning a million galleons won't come true but that is how it usually is with predictions. Some come true and others don't and you're not messing with fate if you remove a mole. But let's not discuss fate right now. It's a topic for another lesson."

Sully wasn't a huge fan of this study, not only that it was kinda gross looking at other people's moles.
Laurel turned her attention to Sully and confirmed the badgers thoughts. "Moles can unlike birth marks appear randomly, yes. Good Sully, and they can also change with time, but usually a person's personality doesn't change with it. Personalities are more rooted in the person and doesn't change randomly." If that made sense.

::::

After Sully had taken down her hand as the last student wishing to speak Laurel fest that it was time to summarize and move on. "Good, good, you are all really thinking and reflecting on what is possible and not. It will be a good platform for our practical activity that we will start in a bit. Remember though to differentiate between moles and birth markes. Birth marks is marks that you have from birth and sticks with you through out your lifetimes while moles are sort of like acne spots that can appear and dissapear now and then."

Clapping her hands together getting excited Laurel said "Now then please locate 3 moles on your skins with the use of your mirrors and table partners help. If you feel you want to use the full body mirrors you can. They are charmed so that the person standing in front of it can see their naked body but someone else will just see clothes. Get to it everyone!"

OOC: Have fun with locating your 3 body moles. Don't do anything else just locate them. No post count required. Post as many or as few posts you want. The class will move on thursday may 18th around 6pm.....so you have more than 36 hours OOC to finish the mini activity. If you have q's for Laurel then say so in your post titles or i might miss them.

Oh... whoops!

"Sorry Professor," Abey replied, giving a nervous and sheepish little smile. Sorry. Sorrysorry. VOLUME CONTROL WAS DIFFICULT. Abey wasn't usually a loud, raucous Gryffindor, but when he got all excitable about something, all his quietness and shyness went completely out of the window actually.

Luckily, he was also no stranger to trouble, either, so reprimands were never likely to send him into utter turmoil. Which was funny because actually most other things did.

Anyway, Divination...

...

.............. okay, that was MEAN. Professor Whatshername had asked everyone what they thought, but then Abey was practically the only one who she then went ahead and said that their thoughts were wrong.

Naturally immediately actually, Abey went into full sulk mode, sitting back in his chair with his arms folded across his chest, and a pout on his face. Well then, in that case, ALL SEERS were TERRIBLE AT DIVINATION, especially if they didn't know the people they were doing readings for. Which was basically cheating and not telling any futures at all.

Of course, Abey kept his thoughts to himself, because he wasn't exactly gutsy enough to snap back. He was just... very sensitive to being told he was wrong in front of everyone else, and had already decided to never ever ever answer another question in Divination again because hOW EMBARRASSING.

"No," Abey mumbled very quietly to Emmeline, who had asked something about instinct. "I mean I'm a Seer."

Not that he wanted to be one anymore because he had just decided that he didn't like Divination at all.

And he didn't want to go searching around his body with one of those mirrors, and end up looking even sillier. Anyway, he had had this body for twelve and a half whole years, he knew the marks on it and didn't need a mirror to find them. So he just sat there, and maybe kind of extra subtly rubbed the back of his hand over his eyes. And sniffled. And sulked.

Abey's outburst earned a look from Junia...and a smile. He was adorable, did he know? She did, but she also knew he'd need to learn to control his excitement during class or he'd get talked to more by the professors, which would make him sad, which would make Junia irrationally upset at her educators, and THAT was a vicious cycle that needed to be stopped before it even started. So yes, a look that said 'careful' and back to the lesson.

Miss Junia? Wait, that was HER! The brunette perked up some when the blonde Gryffindor agreed with her take on the subject at hand and she found herself preening herself on giving an answer worthy of acknowledgement. It felt good. SHE did. Thank YOU, Miss Olivia.

More notes were taken, though the Slytherin wasn't entirely sure she'd be needing them in the future. This didn't sound like her cup of tea. Still, she was here and making an effort. Like, well, even though she had freckles and no moles to speak of, the fourteen year old made a show of checking herself out in the mirror. She DID pause once, just to put her fist under her chin and smile at her little cousin. Buck up, baby Botros. You're okay. He was.

Kitty's eyed widened and her mouth gawped open (for only a moment, she closed it quickly) in horror at what they were being asked to do. She felt embarrassed, as if she were in one of those dreams where you go to class wearing swimsuits instead of uniforms. Her hand shot into the air.

"Excuse me professor, but I don't have any moles. I use the anti-mole potion from Hogsmeade every month to eliminate any moles I might get. Moles just aren't really my style."

And she devoted LOTS of makeup and potions to get just the right look.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Even Emmeline was on about the falsehood of seers. It couldn't have been a coincidence. Her father had warned her not to fall prey to it and yet it was what she'd just done. Believing it like that, no thought to the random nature of any one day and how any number of things could affect it. Of course she'd still be owling her sister once she left class but yes calm, she was calmer now.

It took a great deal of self control to remain straight faced when the Professor suggested her mind might change by the end of the lesson for the mere fact that it wouldn't. The young girl was not of the opinion that happenstance determined destiny. Knowing the nature of moles made it very difficult to believe they could in any way contribute to her knowledge of herself or the future or whatever it was they were meant to be showing her.

Jessa cringed at the Professor's sudden rebuke of Abey. Blue eyes shifted to him, mildly concerned that he may cry but infinitely relieved when he did not. Abey was good people, she much preferred him dry eyed.

And as it turned out, they would be searching for moles. Huh. Where had she seen them the last time? There should have been one...right.....ah, there, on the underside of her arm, drifting closer to the wrist than it did the elbow joint. Yes, that was one of them.

Jessa reached for one of the mirrors, actively trying to find the others--not because she believed they would tell her something but because the Professor had told her to and the girl was nothing if not obedient.

Stasya totally understood why Jessa was so pale. As it was, Professor Vance’s statement to her had made her awfully quiet. None of the hippogriffs would ever kick her. It was almost insulting that the Divination professor would say something like that, and she didn’t want to think that any of the creatures would hurt her. It just didn’t make sense. Plus, she wasn’t going to stop going out the the barn either. Alone or otherwise, because Dobby was out there. She wasn’t going to abandon her squirrel just because the professor said she thought one of the hippogriffs was going to hurt her. Because she knew them. They liked her. And also, it wasn’t nice at all to say people’s sisters were in danger, or to say other people were going to be cursed.

It was enough to make her not feel like concentrating on the lesson. Plus, she didn’t see how moles could predict anything anyway...Did Derf say he had something for her back in his room? She thought she’d heard that, and she’d looked over at him distractedly to see he looked about as lost about the lesson as she was. Plus, Emmeline had said her nanny said Seers could be wrong. Between the birthday stuff and that statement, she was able to break free of her distraction more. And also, she believed Liv. Determining what a person was like just because of marks on their body was just wrong. People were who they were because of way more than just their appearance and making them think otherwise was mean. And also, like Derf said, people got moles removed so maybe it didn’t mean anything true.

I think you’re a Seer,” she whispered in Abey’s direction, hearing his whisper to Emmeline. If he said he was, she’d believe him. And Derf too, of course. She wasn’t entirely sure she felt like searching her body for moles though. She didn’t think she had any, anyway. She picked up the mirror again and checked, though. She just didn’t think it meant anything about her if she had any.

Well, this lesson had just taken a turn for the worse. At least at their table. Emmeline had noticed Stasya's quietness, but she'd assumed her friend was just daydreaming. Since she'd been barely-on-time to class, she hadn't actually heard any of the predictions, but the fact that Cambridge was upset made it occur to her that maybe other people were upset too? Frowning, she turned to Stasya: "What's up?"

She nodded as Abey whispered back to her. The fact that true Seers were so rare made it unlikely in the best way possible that she now knew TWO of them! She supposed Abey would know that he was really Seeing rather than having good instincts, and what would be the point in lying about that? "That's super cool, Abey!" She made sure to whisper because the professor had not liked Abey's loud voice.

The thing that really disturbed the young Gryffindor was when the professor told Abey he was flat-out wrong. What?! He was clearly upset by this and it didn't make sense to her, because she thought his answer was just as good as everyone else's. "I thought it was a good answer, Abey." She looked around at the others for support, because it was NOT a nice thing for a teacher to say. And Abey was nice and smart and friendly. Why did this professor like upsetting people?! First the predictions, now this.

Emmeline decided that she was going to focus on people instead of looking for moles, because she was worried that Abey's upsetness would upset Derf, which would then upset the whole table. In fact, she was rather upset herself and was kind of tempted to say something to the professor about it. But she didn't think it would cheer anyone up if more trouble came to their table. She decided that if everyone was okay, she'd ask Abey's help interpreting the mole she knew was on her arm since he was a Seer. She was sure that when he'd gotten it right, he'd feel better because he'd be proved right.

Oh locate moles on himself? He kinda already knew where they were, at least the ones he could see everyday. He knew he had a couple of moles on the side of his chin, and then a few more on his neck, a few across the center of his chest and torso....

... But he does want to try out this mirror that strips them of their clothes. Personally he found that both hilarious and incredibly awkward, as looking at it would appear that he's standing in a classroom full of people buck naked with no one giving a fuss. Maybe other people would get a kick outta that.

So he stood in front of the mirror with his back turned to it. Yup theres the Gryffindor Ace's bum for all to see but not really seeing lolz. Just when he though his back was clear he saw that he did have a few small moles on his back, moreso along his shoulders on both sides.

And you know what, for the heck of it, he started to make a little dance in front of the mirror, watching himself wiggle his bum. Hey it isnt everyday that one gets to see the back of themselves clearly in front of a mirror right??

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

It seemed she wasn't the only one upset by the 'foresight' of the Professor. Not surprising. The unknown was frightening enough without someone proposing that they could see into it and that it didn't look good for you. It just wasn't the way people wanted to think about a concept that they wouldn't possibly be able to fully assess until it was there before them and no longer the future.

Jessa spared Stasya a glance, noting that Emmeline was getting ready to step in if it was needed--hopefully it wouldn't be. With any luck the girl would also shake free of the false fear that came with something they couldn't know for a fact to be truth or wild guessing. Hippogriffs were proud creatures, it wouldn't make anyone sound like they were grasping at straws if they said one would go on the attack. Didn't make it true.

Anyway, she needed to find two more moles.

Even with the mirror this was proving to be a difficult task. Moles came and left on their own and she'd be lying if she said she was keeping track of them.

There? No. Over there....no. Wait that was a birth mark, not a mole. Oh! Here was another. It'd taken much scouring to find and in truth, Jessa had run out of acceptable places to check while in a room of others without the need to start removing articles of clothing so with that, the girl raised her hand. "I'm afraid I've only got two, Professor." That she knew of. There were likely more but yeah.

Alright, the task was to locate moles on their bodies, right? Olivia headed towards the mirror and then noticed Ace checking himself out in the mirror and being his usual silly self. She stifled a chuckle and headed to an open mirror. In theory, only the students using the mirror could see their skin and everyone else saw clothes. Intriguing. She bit her lip and then stretched her left arm out, running a hand across her arm as she tried to search for a mole. She couldn't find any of them on that arm. She looked to her right and couldn't find any. Then she turned around, glancing over her shoulder, and noticed a mole in the back of her right knee. Alright. There was one. Her eyes continued trailing down and she found one on her right ankle.

She struggled with finding the last one but finally found it on the her lower tummy. AHA.She had forgotten about that one. Olivia had always hidden that when she went swimming which was why she rarely wore a two piece suit. She had been quite self conscious about that when someone at Beauxbatons had pointed it out and made terrible fun of it. She bit her lip. Alright. Done. What was next?

Sully was rather distrubed by this lesson... well at least they were only looking at themselves rather than each other's moles. Man what if she had to looked at someone's butt for them! YUCK!

But Sully already knew where two moles were without having to even look in the mirror. She had one on her lower left back that looked like a star ish. And she had a plain circle one right here on her right arm. But trying to think of where she had another. Getting up she went to look in the mirror. At first glance she saw one instantly! how could she forget about the one right there on the front of her chest!

Brent had been silent so far, although he'd definitely been paying attention. Moles. This class was about disgusting moles on a person's body. Even though Brent was a guy, just the thought of having three moles on his body turned his stomach. Now he was meant to find them, though.

So he was going to stand in front of a mirror and see his naked body in a class full of his peers? Dude, what if the mirror like malfunctioned or something, and EVERYBODY saw what only HE was supposed to see. This was the most awkward class he'd ever been in.

Nevertheless, Brent approached a mirror. He was so not asking for any of his table partners help. Nope. Not going to happen. He gulped and peered into the mirror. He began looking over his body for any sign of a mole, all the while hoping he just never found one. Then sure enough, there it was...one on the upper part of his right leg. Eww. Didn't somebody in class just say there was a potion for this kind of thing?

Okay.

Listen.

The thing about Abey was that when he had EMOTIONS, he never ever ever hid them. Not ever. We wore them, loud and proud, and it was honestly the best thing because it meant that the bad and sad and mad ones tended not to last for long, not unless they were an actual proper episode, but that was only when they were really serious.

Point was, when Abey's sulk mode activated, it didn't last for very long, especially when there were people around him actually not sulking, and especially when he could see Junia over there communicating with him to not let himself get down. Automatically, Abey smiled at Junia, and then suddenly he was over it actually, and was sitting forward again to feel more included with everyone else. Emmeline got a smile, because Abey could tell she was trying to make him feel better and just knowing she was trying meant that she had succeeded.

"The only moles I have actually are the little flat ones that look kind of like dark freckles," he announced to the table at large, holding out his right arm and pulling back the sleeve of his robe and then his school shirt. "I think those still count as moles; I don't know what else they'd be. These ones here make a triangle, so that's my three already." See? No mirror necessary. Which was good because Abey would probably get the giggles what with how those mirrors were apparently charmed, and then he'd probably get yelled at again. "I also have a reeeeeeeally light birth mark under my arm," just by the way, just sharing, Abey held out his left arm and sort of tried to twist it around, pointing to an area on the underneath of his upper arm that was closer to the back than to the front "But I can't pull my sleeve high enough to show. I have one on my stomach too, right by my belly button." He could probably show off that... but also probably shouldn't.

SUMMER FOREVER

Wow-- mole-finding. What an interesting activity. Picking up the mirror, she stared into it, knowing for sure she had no moles on her face but still.. she checked, anyway. Once she got that confirmed, she checked her neck and there was nothing. GREAT. Maybe she had no moles, to speak of.

Wait.. there was a teeeeeny-tiny one on her right shoulder. Ew, when did that happen? Why did she have one? Moving on. Trying not to get too upset, she ran the mirror down the length of both her arms and nope. Next, she shifted focus to her legs and.. wait. WAIT. There was another small one on her left pinky toe. Too small to actually be noticeable but STILL. Why was this freaking her out?! Yeah, no. She was done searching for moles. Two was more than enough anyway. She set the mirror back on the table and waited for class to move on, totally not worrying about those two moles. NOPE.

Abey seemed much better now. He was even finding moles like they were supposed to and everything! Yay! Emmeline returned his smile with relief. She decided not to think too badly of this professor's meanness, since both Abey and Cambridge seemed to feel better now. Unless she had upset Stasya, in which case the Divination professor would forever be branded in the Gryffindor's mind as Mean.

Emmeline picked up a mirror absently as she waited for Stasya's answer. She had decided to find her other two moles, while still making sure Stasya had 95% of her attention. She would just put the mirror down whenever her friend started talking.

So, find 3 moles. She knew about one on her left arm by her elbow. Emmeline checked her neck and face kind of anxiously with the mirror, because moles on those places would be GROSS. Fortunately, she didn't have any there so she used the cool mirrors to see through her robes and found THREE moles on her right shoulder that she'd never noticed before, because they were really light brown. "Yours are darker than mine," she told Abey for no reason in particular. The ones on her shoulder made a kind of big, weird-shaped triangle; she imagined it was what a triangle would look like if a baby giant had tried to draw one -- it was all spread out and not clearly a triangle at all unless she looked closely. "Hey, I have a triangle too!" Weird-shaped, badly drawn triangles were still triangles, right? But there, that was FOUR moles. The professor should be happy now. Emmeline triumphantly dropped the mirror back onto the table and refocused 100% of her attention now on Stasya. She also noticed that Derf was kind of quiet (or had her moles been more distracting than she'd thought?), so she whispered: "What about you, Derf?"

Melbourne had been quietly in the room as they learned about Moleoscopy. It was interesting, and almost…seemed like it was possibly not the most accurate type of divinations as after all some moles would only tell you if you had cancer in your body…or, well, if something utterly sad and maddening were happening like you were slowly dying because of said cancer.

Still, she was intrigued.

Glancing over to Tenacius Mel just flared for a moment as she thought to herself. Should she up right ask him to hold her mirror….but…like what if the mirror didn’t work right and other people saw her as well being naked she blushed as she looked over and saw him dancing.

Merlin that looked funny. Until she had remembered that he looked naked to himself…ew…so weird. Nope. Not picturing anyone naked. AT ALL…except…maybe shirtless was another thing because helloooooooooooo everyone here looked like supermodels and probably had abs of steel like super heros…she was sure that Kirk did at least…please stop contemplating friends abs Melbourne, she scolded herself for a moment before giving her attention to the mirror in her hand…d-did she have moles? She didn’t see any – wait…what what if they were like on her bum? She thought as she turned around and tried to position the mirror so that she could look at her derriere.

Nothing.

She couldn’t see it.

The only thing the Gryffindor managed to do was spin around in a circle like a dog chasing its tail.

Olivia had to admit....that she wasn't entirely comfortable with the subject matter of this lesson today. However, instead of making a proper stink like some people would (eyes on you, Bronwyn), the blonde quietly collected her mirror and brought it up to stare at her own reflection. For whatever reason, her eyes were especially bright today. More blue than usual, almost luminous... Hm.

Sigh.

...... And sorry to disappoint you, Professor Vance...but Liv was well aware of where all her moles and beauty marks were located...So, this exercise wasn't necessary for her. When you were the type of person that Olivia Lynn Phillips was, you stared at yourself in the buff a lot. Not for conceited purposes, mind. No, no... It was completely the opposite. This Gryffindor had A LOT of issues with her own body, which had manifested after the attack. It was safe to say she'd carefully inspected (and criticized every inch of herself several times over). From the scars to the one beauty mark on her hip. She only had the one, for sure...

"What if you only have the one, though?" No special full-length mirror was necessary for her to pull the hem of her skirt out and gaze at the star-shaped dark spot. It had always amused her that it was shaped like a star. A STAR, of all bleeding things....but she still didn't hold any stock in sharing possible personality information with impressionable children. Hopefully everyone present in this lesson was mature enough to take the readings, whatever they may be, at face value. No upset ickles today, please. Unknowingly, her gaze drifted over to Abey. It seemed like the poor kid was barely hanging on most of the time.

Hm, what was the star-shaped beauty mark supposed to mean, anyway? Refocusing on the task at hand, Olivia reconsidered the strange dark spot decorating her skin. Eh, she supposed she'd find out soon enough....if that was where this lesson was headed.

'Reading their own moles and beauty marks via textbook.'

Mole hunting. That was interesting. Now Harriet had heard of mole hunting before. But those were the animals, and not he moles on her skin. So she found it quite unusual. She hadn't known that moles could even be used for Divination. so she was kind of excited to find out things, and at least try to look if she could find her moles. She knew she had some. She'd noticed them before, but the fourth year hadn't really thought about them as anything but moles. She probably wouldn't think anything of it, after the lesson, but for now she could try.

She moved to one of the full length mirrors. This was weird. She could see herself without her clothes on, in the middle of the class. It was weird. But it was okay. Nobody else could see. Hattie began looking for her moles, she turned, so her back was facing the mirror, for she knew she had some on the back of her back.

She looked carefully, spotting a few down the base of her spine. They were in a little line, it was funny. She liked it. They looked pretty. They were kind of hard to see when she didn't have a mirror though. So not that useful really. Now she kind of had found three, all on her back, but she wanted to keep finding others. So she spun back around, and then tried to locate some more moles on her body.

Well ok then. They had to locate three moles on their bodies. "This shouldn't be too hard", Shay thought to herself. She already knew that she had a mole or two, as well as a birthmark. Since they were only supposed to find moles for this lesson, she would deal with that. Picking up her hand mirror, she gazed into it while tilting her head to the side. There it was, mole number one. This one Shay had been aware of. She had a small, but visible mole on the right side of her neck. It had been there as long as she could remember. Had it been present at birth? That she did not know.

Shay adjusted the location of the mirror, looking for additional moles in her head and neck area. She knew that this was probably futile. If something was there, surely she would have seen it before now. Shay put her mirror down, pushed her sleeves up and began to search her arms for moles. She really wanted to avoid the full body mirror at all costs because........how weird would that be? After close inspection, she found no moles on the top side of her arms. Bending her elbow and raising her hand to her face, Shay awkwardly looked at the back side of her lower arm. Thankfully, she found a mole near her left elbow. Mole number two, check.

Two down and one to go. Now there was another mole that Shay was aware of, but it was covered by her clothing. Could she just note it without actually having to look at it? Would that be cheating? With a sigh, Shay grabbed her mirror, stood up and headed for the dreaded magic mirror. She reluctantly stepped in front of it. Oh this was really bizarre. Shay couldn't help but feel uncomfortable, even though she knew that others couldn't see her as she saw herself. Shaking her head, Shay proceeded to focus on the task at hand. She turned around and held the small mirror up, adjusting it to just the right angle. There it was, mole number three, right where she knew it would be. A perfect circle on her shoulder blade.

While she was at it, Shay continued to look around. Were there any other moles she wasn't aware of. Apparently there was one, but she would have to keep this one to herself. She would not be divulging the location of mole number four. Nope. Had to take this one to the grave. Having seen enough, Shay left the mirror behind and returned to her seat. She jotted them down in her notebook, just to have something to do while she waited. She wasn't likely to forget the location of her three moles before the lesson resumed.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Uhm... the Professor was absolutely SURE that their reflections wouldn't been seen by anyone else if they used that mirror right?

Mason grabbed the small mirror to examine his face first. He had never really paid attention to his moles and now that he was searching for them he realised that he didn't even have a lot. As he turned his face to the side, he finally noticed a tiny mole near his ear on his jaw.

He tried to find more on his face but only found one. With a sigh, the Ravenclaw pushed himself up from his chair to go to the mirror when a thought came to him. Perhaps he had a mole on his hands?

Examining them, he found out that he had a mole on the underside of his right index finger. Writing down his second mole location he continued to search on his hands and arms but he couldn't find more.

He had no other choice but to use the mirror. Because there was no way he was going to ask another student to help him find more moles, no way.

He looked at the mirror and saw that some of the students had already used it and he watched carefully if the mirror actually concealed their naked bodies, totally not looking like THAT. When he was satisfied that the mirror didn't show anything, he stood up and walked to the mirror.

He looked at himself in the mirror seeing his naked reflection staring back at him. He looked behind him, hoping the mirror wasn't getting faulty. The Ravenclaw found no moles at his front so he turned around and looked over his shoulder.

Wait...was that? He peered closer, feeling rather stupid, as he mentally marked the mole on his right shoulder blade. They only needed three right? Mason moved away from the mirror and quickly went back to his seat and wrote down the last location of the moles.

As if the class wasn't strange already, Skylar was pretty sure the class just got weirder. They were meant to locate three moles on their body. Not birth marks, but moles. Which made Skylar wonder why in the name of Merlin, Professor Vance thought teenagers (out of any age group) would have moles? Weren't they meant for older people, or over exposure to the sun? Which reminded her that as a quidditch player, she saw the sun a fair bit, yet still. The thought of finding a mole on her skin, sort of terrified her and the fourth year wasn't sure that she wanted to know if she had any.

She could take a quick peek and then say none found, except, something told her that Professor Vance would know she was lying. Also, full body mirrors that only she could see herself naked, but no one else? That was weird ... and kind of sounded improper.

Deep breath, no one is paying you any attention. They are all looking for their own moles, Skylar reminded herself. Stepping in front of one of the full body mirrors, because she was confident she had none on her face, she squinted, as she inspected her charmed naked body. "Weird," she whispered. Nothing, nothing ... wait, wait ... what was THAT?!? How had she not noticed that before?

It wasn't very large, but she was fairly sure it wasn't a birth mark either. On her upper arm, must have been from when she was wearing a tank over the summer. Skylar was also pretty sure it wasn't a freckle either.

Looking carefully over her skin, she didn't find anything else that seemed off. Yes, thank you, Olivia Phillips for that question.

Swedishfish Girl! Madame Librarian! Jess's Soul Sister! Sweetest Swede!

Laurel was observing the students when they got to work with what she saw as enthusiasm to find their body moles. When Kitty shot her hand up to ask about what to do when she periodically removed all her body moles with an anti-mole potion Professor Vance felt totally astounded. It had never crossed her mind that girl's went to those lengths to look pretty. Looking over at Kitty she smiled and responded. "Kitty, if you truly know that you have no moles anywhere on your body then you'll have to team up with a peer that has moles for next part of the lesson. If that's okay with you?"

Turning her gaze to Jessa and Olivia that had similar questions Laurel said "Jessa and Olivia you can do the same as i advised Kitty. You can team up with a peer that has a mole or moles in other locations than you do if you don't have three. Also anyone is free to use the full body mirrors we have in the classroom if they can't find enough on moles on their face and arms. Since the mirrors will let you see your naked skin through the clothes, but nobody else can."

::

After an extra 15 minutes or so and when it seemed that all the students had located their moles Laurel clasped her hands together to get their attention. "Good, good everyone now let's get deeper! For our main practical activity you're going to classify your three body moles by shape, size and location with the help of the chapter on moles in your textbooks.

With the help of the information you find in your textbooks about your moles depending on your classification of them, you are then going to write down a prediction of how you predict your next 3 days will be on a piece of parchment along with your name, year and house, that you hand in."

Okay...Sully was truly starting to think maybe she should have skipped this class. Moles ... honestly .... worst class ever... ugh... with a huff however Sully opened her text book to the right page and began to do as she was asked. Her belief in this system or not was not going to stop her from getting good grades!

I will be lazy most of the day but at the last second decide to assert an evil deed such as scaring a friend. It will cause turmoil amongst us.

Saturday:
I will hard on home work for the day, and with good fortune and get an amazing grade to prove for it.

Sunday:
I will be happy to day, and will need to get healthy in order to not get a cold.
There Sully felt rather good about her assignment. Well at least it was complete.

Between the greeting of 'Samantha', and the prediction of serious damage occurring during her next sneeze, the lesson had gone downhill rapidly for Sam. She sat by the window sniffling into the tissue the Professor had given her, and trying to concentrate on the topic at hand.

Moles.

Seriously? It was possible to see the future using moles?

Huh.

They weren't hard for her to find; she had several on each arm, ranging from a almost honey colour to a dark chestnut brown. She was curious about only having to choose three though; she'd counted 18 on her left arm alone. The mirror was hardly necessary.

She settled on a triangle of three: one small dark one, a medium mid-brown one, and the last one larger and paler still. She now she had to look up the meanings. Looked like a LOT of reading to do before predictions could happen.

Oh goody…the woman told her she was fine with not believing it would really work as a divination form. Cassie was satisfied with that…not being forced to believe it would. But the fifth year wasn’t about to just sit there or storm out in protest so she would be giving it a shot to keep an open mind regardless. And like the professor said…they would see if she felt the same way about the method at the end of the lesson. This was a class after all and learning experiences abounded.

And so she went to search for the moles and birthmarks she herself had on her body. Cass knew she had some, she wasn’t vanishing them or taking potions to rid herself of them like some of her classmates apparently were. Now to remember or look to see where they were. There was one…inside her right wrist. Another…around her left knee. And after having no more luck in finding any others, and the professor trying to move them on to readings, the Ravenclaw chanced a look with the mirror to find one on her upper arm beneath her shirt. Now she could move on herself.
