DADA Lesson Two - Trollolol

It might come as a relief to notice that the location of the Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson is in its usual place. After all, trying to do a lesson outside in the April showers just wasn't worth it.

Despite the weather, the classroom looked bright and well-lit, giving you the chance to notice the things that were in the room and the things that weren't. No desks, no chairs and not even Hirsch's desk stood in this room. In fact, it was lacking so many pieces of equipment that it almost made the room look bigger.

Something that might surprise you is the lack of mats or cushions in this room as well. Instead, the floor of the classroom seemed to be softer than usual, as if extra padding had been added to it and thereby making it comfortable enough to sit on.

But the biggest change in the room? Rocks.

Standing on the other side of the room and where Hirsch's desk should've been were an array of rocks. The rocks ranged in size: from the smallest ones that you could hold under your arm, to the larger ones that were almost the size of an average fifth year. The largest rock was a gigantic one that had the smoothest exterior by far and almost reached up to the ceiling itself. The more observant people might notice something purple sitting at the very top of the rock but that's not something to concern yourselves with now.

Hirsch himself can be seen leaning against the largest rock, looking as cool and collected as ever and waiting for, well, you.

So come in, make yourselves comfortable and wait for the lesson to start.

class progression:
- What do you know about trolls?
- What spells would you use against a troll?
- MINI ACTIVITY: ROCK SMASH! Use the Bludgeoning Hex to try and smash the rocks
- MAIN ACTIVITY: ROCK CLIMBING!
- That's all, folks!

OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Class will continue tomorrow (eveningtime GMT+1) Hope you have fun! ^^

With the two mere facts that the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom was only on the first floor and that Professor Pretty Hirsch was the instructor, Vivian just couldn't find a reason not to attend this class. Had she ever missed a class in this subject? No, not possible. In fact, it was the last thing that would ever happen.

It didn't take long for Vivian to reach the classroom because her common room was just literally a staircase below this floor, and it was definitely a perk to be near. It always meant getting the best seat possible, which was definitely at the very front where she can admire, in high definition, the beauty that is Professor Hirsch's face. The blonde skipped along the corridor and then paused at the entrance of their classroom. "Goooood day, Professor Hirsch!" The man received a beam, as always. He always got a wide smile from this Slytherin.

... Huh?! Where was HER usual seat? Vivian's face was evidently confused as she looked around. Rocks everywhere. No chairs. No tables. No anything, except for pretty Professor there in front. That was probably the only good thing about today.

But the presence of rocks definitely called for another singing opportunity. "We will, we will rock youuuu!" Yas! Vivian beamed once more before moving to the front, where she would normally be and where her desk would have been. She sort of flopped on the floor and... ooooooh, soft! The Slytherin giggled, made herself comfortable, and waited for her friends. Was she the first one to arrive? Apparently so, but definitely nothing surprising.

Even though Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson would not take a place outside due to weather reason, Ava would not going to miss it because it's her favorite one. She practically ran to the first floor because she didn't want to be late for it. In fact, she's actually... kind of early.

Entering the classrrom, the Gryffindor noticed that the room looked... well, not that like usual classroom. But then she tried to remember when was the last time Professor Hirsch had a normal classroom because clearly, she did not remember. The room was surrounded by rocks. What were they going to do with those today? Destroy it? Probably.

But... Where they're going to seat? Because she noticed the lack of desks, chairs, but there were no cushion or mats or anything that can be used for seating.

"Hello, Professor." Ava greeted the man, noticing that he was leaning on the largest rock in the room. "Have you tried to climb it, by the way?" Referring to the rock, obviously. Even if he had, she would not be surprised since the DADA professor seemed like such a guy who's into extreme sports or anything related to that. "Hey, Viv." She greeted the Slytherin girl.

But seriously, where she's going to seat? Maybe it would be better if Ava kept standing until further instructions.

Kane would MUCH rather be napping than in DADA right now. Especially with the gloomy weather outside. He wasn't super used to all this rain, but it had grown on him. He would love to be huddled under his covers right now...MAYBE snuggling with Saffron on the Hufflepuff common room couch...anywhere but here, really. Just thinking of taking a nap was making him sleepy.

"Hello," he said happily to Hirsch. Hmm, rocks? Interesting. He noticed the extra...BOUNCE the floor had today to, and could only IMAGINE what was about to go down in here...

Govoni 07-14-2017 08:13 PM

Firstly, Olivia was relieved to be back. One couldn't possibly imagine the boredom that was sitting in a hospital bed for two months. True, she'd been unconscious in the beginning, but.... It was still very boring. Despite all the emotional struggles that had come with waking up, the blonde Gryffindor had fought to return to her beloved school. If not just for the remainder of the term.

....and shout-out to Healer Reed for being there with her every step of the way. Liv really admired that man. Thanks to him and Jacen, she felt she had a real chance of still passing all the OWLs she wanted to attempt. Probably not the full twelve anymore....

With these thoughts and more swimming around her headspace, she popped into the Defense classroom...immediately stopping in her tracks. Had Professor Hirsch been robbed?.... Robbed and gifted rocks... Awkward. "Professor, I know I've been gone a while, but...why'd you redecorate?" This was said as she advanced further into the classroom...noting the way the floor seemed to sluggishly meet the bottoms of her feet. Huh? Experimentally taking another step, it became obvious that there was a pretty strong cushioning charm on the floor.... Interesting.

Liv only hoped she could keep up today, and that her head would cooperate. As she searched out a place to park, she offered quiet 'hellos' to Ava, Kane, and Vivian.

Kirk arrived at his next DADA lesson. Today was raining once again, but as an observant sky watcher, this didn't surprise him. It did however mean less star gazing from the clouds but he could at least find some amusement with cloud shaping. When Kirk saw the variety of rocks his light blue eyes scanned about trying to make sense of this. Were they expecting a rock fight? He spotted the Professor Head of House and something purple above the rock he was at. Was that a surprise?

"Sup Professor." Kirk managed with a straight face. It was nice to be one of the early ones here.

Schroyers 07-14-2017 09:08 PM

Oliver made his way into the DADA classroom, really happy he didn't have to walk outside this time. Not that he hated going outside but effort.. and rain. Honestly he couldn't afford to get sick with OWLs coming up. There was a lot of studying to be done and he was not going to be feeling ill while doing it.

This would be good.. A subject he lik- and where was all the stuff? The floor felt.... squishy? And there were rocks everywhere?

What was that purple thing?

Hirsch seemed fine, calm as every... Still seeming to have achieved a level of cool that Oliver personally aspired to. So he figured everything had to be fine?

"Hello, Professor. Looks like things will be interesting today." Probably an understatement. Hirsch was never a boring teacher.

Liv at the end <3

Even if he hadn’t been the one to rescue her and her dorm mates from the scary forest, Stasya knew she wouldn’t have missed the next DADA lesson. Besides, she had to prove she was strong, even if she wasn’t entirely sure who she was proving it to. She’d held her own so far in dueling club after all, and all her other lessons. She just felt like she needed to prove it. The rain hardly bothered her, but deep down she was a little bit grateful that the lesson wasn’t being held outside. It was one thing making her way through the rain to go to the barn and the nursery, but standing outside in it was different. Especially with the part in the notice about the lesson about being ready to fight.

Walking down to the first floor, a confused expression crossed her face as she’d entered the classroom only to find a whole lot of rocks. And a squishy floor that reminded her of the Spongify charm she’d used when dueling Emmeline, but way stronger. Actually, that part was kind of cool, and she was tempted to bounce but she didn’t. Or, she mostly didn’t as she made her way further into the room. “Hi Professor Hirsch!,” she said brightly, giving him a grin. No tears this time. Especially not when she saw a familiar figure in the room, one she hadn’t seen in a while.

Hi Liv! She went over and gave her a big, but careful, hug.

ChanceCoeur 07-14-2017 10:01 PM

Noelle wasn't too far behind Ava to DADA class. Smile on her face, feeling GREAT.

She was excited about this class. She had read the board in the common room and was curious what Hirsch had up his sleeves.

She paused when she entered the classroom. She studied the classroom curiously, her eyes traveling up the rocks. Something caught her eye at the top but she figured Hirsch would tell them in due time. Speaking of Hirsch, there he was by the biggest rock. "Good day professor!" She said brightly to him and then said hellos to everyone in the class before going to stand by Ava. "Hey love" she said nudging her with a grin. She looked as happy as Noelle looked.

Which was a good thing.

Also... Liv was back!! The girl got a wide grin from Noelle. Noelle had heard what had happened to her. She was glad she was well enough to be back in classes.

Goblinfrog 07-14-2017 10:12 PM

Walking into the brightly lit classroom, Kitty noticed the lack of chairs and pillows and the presence of those weirs rocks. Hmmm. The first thought that popped into her head was, Rock golems?

She noticed how soft the floor was a few moments later. "Hello Professor Hirsch," she said cheerfully, wobbling a little on her feet as she tested the floor. He wouldn't have us throw rocks at each other, right? No way! she thought.

hermygirl 07-15-2017 01:30 AM

Sam had been reading as she made her way down from the Ravenclaw Common room to class, so it took a few moments for her to fully lift her gaze from her book and notice the lack of desks.

Huh.

The DADA classroom looked more ready for a geology lesson than anything else. And there was something spongy going on under foot too. Kinda like that stuff you often found in children's play areas.

Curiosity piqued, Sam closed her book and tucked in it in her bag before grinning her Head of House. "Hey, Professor!" She could just lean against this rock here, right? Given there were no chairs and all.

ArianaBlack 07-15-2017 01:54 AM

!!!!!!! Defense Against the Dark Arts !!!!! One of the ONLY classes she really cared about. Well, there was also Charms and Flying, but that was like three out of a million. So it was in the top 30% of classes at least. It's okay though 'cause next term she was gonna drop all the classes that didn't matter. Professor Marchand said he could make it happen. So it would TOTALLY happen. Though, all of that was a big aside 'cause DADA !!!!!

Zoryn waltzed into the room with a BIG grin on her face as she went over to say hi to Professor Hirsch! "Professor H!!! Are we learning about dragons today??" She FELT IT IN HER BONES this time. "Let me guess, you set fire protection charms on the walls!?!" He was SUPER smart. AND that's probably why there was no furniture. Annnnnnd it definitely looked like the classroom was bigger (sort of). He was making room for the dragons!!!

OMG, WERE THOSE DRAGON EGGS? Best. Lesson. Ever.

As she waited for the class to start, she decided to make pop-a-squat on the floor. Criss-cross-apple sauce.

Cassirin 07-15-2017 02:48 AM

This was a rocky start to DADA. No, bad pun. There had to be a better one. Time to rock n' roll? Hirsch was a stone cold fox?

Katy sighed at her apparent lack of creativity and took up a spot near Oliver, giving him a nudge with her elbow. Hey, friend! Things were about to get crazy... or at least as crazy as they could get in a regulation classroom, with an approved lesson plan, led by one of the least outrageous (but most handsome) professors at Hogwarts.

"Good day, Professor. I like your rock."

Watson 07-15-2017 03:34 AM

There were rocks in this place taller than her. Olivia Holden was much shorter than the average fifth year. She was barely five foot one and three quarters! Which of course could have been rounded up to five foot two but she found three quarters of an inch a little more exciting way of seeing it or thinking about it. Dying the rocks, she wondered what they would get up to in this lesson. "Hello Professor Hirsch!" she said with a happy grin. She always enjoyed these lessons and couldn't wait to see what was in store for them. "Hope you are well!"

And with a smile, she made her way over to Noelle. "Hello!" she practically sang with a nod. She was feeling in a rather singing mood.

It had been nearly a month since the last IMPS challenge but Levi Kenning was nothing if not consistent at nursing grudges close to his chest. This was especially obvious when the reason in question was his mother's well being and now it'd been threatened. She was perfectly fine now, of course, but. It was a matter of principle at this point.

And everyone on staff was guilty, as far as he was concerned. Even Hirsch, regrettably. Thus his "Good morning," to the man was rather short and lacked any of its usual--not enthusiasm, but certainly, it lacked interest. The lack of chairs and desks was noted with some light disappointment but the rocks were something else entirely.

Levi openly eyeballed them. If anything, they'd serve as a good surface to bash his head against if he embarrassed himself.

And, look, there were people he knew. And Olivia Phillips was back, and the girl was really nothing short of a miracle of modern healing, as far as he was concerned. He'd seen her and the blood and--yeah. He sent her a small wave.

Thanks to the clement weather gracing the Hogwarts campus, Nicky had been deprived of time in a real classroom. Yes, the outdoor atmosphere was nice. The sun was shining. Birds were singing. Spring was springing. Yada yada yada. Did no one care about his ALLERGIES?

Hirsch did to an extent, considering he had moved nature inside. ... or maybe the man was trying to avoid getting that flawless head of hair soggy? Whatever. Nicholas could deal with stones. And he appreciated nice locks, anyway.

"Good day, sir," the Hufflepuff greeted monotonously. He took no notice of anyone else in the classroom, save for the first familiar face he spotted. Speaking of perfect hair...

"Morning." Levi Kenning! The cleanest person he knew!

That trait would be much appreciated today, considering these rocks probably had sooo many bacteria on them.

NifflerFan 07-15-2017 05:41 AM

DADA was, in addition to Charms and CoMC, the most important class Emmeline was taking this term. Unfortunately, this particular lesson was being held on one of the best or one of the worst days of her life -- she wasn't sure which one yet. She and Professor Stewart had the scary court thing later this afternoon, and the entire idea was really kind of overwhelming. She'd been tempted to skip all of her lessons today -- not that Professor Stewart would be very impressed by that -- but what would she do instead? Sit in the common room and do nothing? No, thanks! She'd thought briefly of hiding in one of the creature barns, but that was a no-go too; Professor Wayland was always either in there himself or teaching right outside them. There's no way he wouldn't notice a student lurking in there during lessons time. Plus, what if Professor Hirsch taught them a new defensive spell that she'd end up needing?! Skipping just wasn't an option. To say that Emmeline was super distracted today would be a huuuge understatement though.

As she entered the classroom, she noticed the squishy-ness of the floor that reminded her of her first duel that had been with Stasya. She showed only a little surprise at the classroom being totally empty of its normal stuff and that there were loads of rocks around too. "Hi, Professor Hirsch," she greeted him with a forced smile as she walked past him to stand by Stasya -- and Miss Olivia!!! Emmeline approached her friends with caution, 'cause what if Miss Olivia was still bothered by noises? "Hi Stas, Hii Miss Olivia,"she said in a slightly quieter tone of voice than she usually would've done. She reallllly wanted to hug Miss Olivia, but she definitely didn't want to risk hurting her or anything, so she kind of just stood there and beamed at the older girl.

griffin 07-15-2017 08:19 AM

The notice for the lesson had said be ready to fight, and Isa Wright did not want to fight. NOPE. Not doing it. Honestly if this wasn't one of the required classes she wouldn't be here. Everything they learned about in this class was just so dark and evil and depressing. Isa couldn't stand all of the evil in the world. She couldn't understand why anyone would ever do evil things. Every time she thought about all of the bad things she cried. So many people suffered because of unnecessary evils in the world. She just wanted the world to be a happy, safe place free of injustice and evil. Why would anyone ever intentionally harm someone? Isa just couldn't understand why anyone would do that.

As usual, Isa was reluctantly hanging back in a corner near the door so she could easily leave if she felt that she needed to. She liked Professor Hirsch as a person, really, but she just couldn't handle learning about evil without getting all sad and upset about why it was so evil, and she never participated in anything that involved fighting or violence. Stasya, Emmeline, and Kane all got friendly waves from Isa. Later she would have to check in with Emmeline to see how things were going for the young Gryffindor girl. Hopefully everything would go well and Emmeline would be able to stay with Professor Stewart. If things didn't work out, Isa was totally prepared to just keep Emmeline at home forever and ever. Anything to help her friend.

Was that Liv? Liv was back! Isa waved at Liv. Later she would have to go and properly speak to Liv, but Liv was probably overwhelmed by everyone welcoming her back right now. Besides, Isa wasn't really in a talkative mood right now. This class had that effect on her. In DADA the usually bubbly third year hufflepuff turned quiet and timid. This was by far her least favorite class. Most of the time Isa didn't participate in the activities, so her skills were lacking as well. If she ever needed DADA skills to survive in the near future, things probably wouldn't turn out well for her. That was probably something she needed to talk to Professor Hirsch about.

"We see you and your pet rock collection, Professor Not-Sabel" - Airey Flamsteed

Okay but...Derf was a lover and not a fighter.

But he was here anyway because, well, he just was.

And stepping into the classroom was more than a bit perplexing, although by now Derf had come to expect unusual settings in classrooms so this really wasn't all THAT surprising. Although his mind immediately jumped to places.

"Pogrebins?!" he exclaimed from the doorway. Oh yeah, hello there professor. We kinda see you but really we are just looking at all your rocks. Only some of these were really REALLY big so...

...but also how very fitting. It was all falling into place with his theory. All of it. A sense of despair and futility? He could practically feel it CONSUMING him as he dragged his feet towards everyone....or well not EVERYONE because he spotted Levi and quickly made his way over towards that Hogwarts champion because hello HI hero and fellow BRO.

And also hello Nicholas Tate. Hi. Don't mind the dirt under his fingernails. Just casually out on the ground digging for and collecting worms and insects earlier.

Oliver felt the nudge and nudged back, he knew who it was without looking but of course he looked anyway. "Hey. So the floor is squishy and there's lots of rocks. What's your guess on the lesson? Mine is the weirdest and most violent game of dodgeball." It was clearly a joke, though the words 'if you can dodge a rock, you can dodge a ball' came to mind..

He wouldn't say it out loud though, he had to often remind himself that Katy didn't get references to pop culture, well not the muggle kind. But the discussions these moments led to were some of the most entertaining.

He still wasn't over 'Star Fight'

It was always nice to see that the first student of the day was one who was in a good mood. That set off the lesson nicely, didn't it?

And was it surprising to see Miss Fairfield here first? Not at all. Maybe she just liked to be punctual to her lessons.

"Hello, Miss Fairfield. Nice to see you here so early," he said, giving her a wide smile, "How are you?" It was a casual question, as if the setup of the room was anything but unusual. He'd set it up and he knew exactly why but to see the look of confusion on the girl's face was something else entirely. That was something he definitely expected.

What he didn't expect? The singing.

The man glanced between her and the rocks and then back again before letting out a chuckle. "It sounds like you have a song locked away for every occasion." Needless to say, he approved. "That can be the theme song for today's lesson, in fact."

The man smiled at the arrival of the next student, not surprised to find her here. She was good at this subject, if her OWL results were anything to go by. "Hello, Miss Burton," he said, giving her a smile and a nod of his head. At the mention of the rock, he glanced up at it and the way the smooth surface reflected the light in the room. The smile on his face turned into an amused one as he looked back at her. Ah, if only the girl knew. "Not exactly but I wouldn't say no to trying."

Or maybe this is just to raise his hopes and then let it tumble later on.

Though, it was nice that she'd chosen to attend this lesson.

At her comment, however, the smile on his face turned into an amused one as he took a quick glance around the room. "It's missing a few things, isn't it?" he said, glancing back at her, "If it makes you feel better, it's not permanent."

'Sup Professor'

If there was a greeting that made him feel cool, it was this one.

"Hello, Kirk," he said, giving the Ravenclaw a smile and a nod of his head. He watched the boy glance around the room and..... look towards the top of the largest rock? The man half wondered if he'd noticed the thing at the very top or not. It would be revealed later, of course, but curiosity was a thing.

Aside from disliking the chairs and desk setup that normal classrooms had, Hirsch liked to set up his classrooms in this way because of the reactions he received from it. The students always seemed to be so surprised by the new setup and that initial reaction was what he looked forward to the most.

Not to mention that it was much less boring and left more room for practicals.

A smile spread across the man's face at the sight of the Slytherin. "Hello, Mr Lupin." Were things going to be interesting? "They will be and I hope you think so by the end of the lesson." It was going to be a good one, he knew it.

Ah, Stasya!

The memory of the incident at the forest came rushing back to him. It was nice to see the girl looking so happy now but he wasn't about to forget that tear-stained face that had been clinging to him from the forest to the Hospital Wing. It was..... heartbreaking, to say the least, but if he was glad about anything, it was that she was safe and didn't look physically upset anymore.

"Hello, Stasya. How are you?" He matched her grin with one of his own, half-wondering where Emmeline and Tessa were. They wouldn't be far behind, right?

Unless he was mistaken, he was going to say that Noelle looked happy. Happier, even. Did it have anything to do with the class? Probably not. Was he going to pretend that it did? Yes, he was.

Something that made him happy? The level of constant vigilance in this Gryffindor. Look at the way she was looking around the room carefully before entering. He wasn't about to jump-scare her but this was a practice that was nice to see. "Hello, Noelle. You look you're in a good mood." Not that it was a bad thing but it was noted.

Again, reactions to the weird setup were always interesting because he knew what the reason behind it was and they didn't. Assumptions were bound to be made and he half-wondered if anyone was going to end up guessing what the topic is.

"Kitty! Hello," he said, giving her a smile and watching as she..... wobbled? "Careful." Though, considering how cushioned the floor was, they didn't have anything to worry about.

Was it surprising to see the Ravenclaw with a book in her hands? Not at all. He half-wondered if it was a Defence book and she'd merely been reading up on possible lesson topics. But then again, that was just him being slightly biased towards the subject.

He matched the grin on her face with one of his own before saying, "Hey, Sam! Nice book?" He didn't mind her standing if she wanted to but she wouldn't get tired, would she?

And here was another student who looked pretty enthusiastic for the lesson.

Though, dragons? That was something that made him chuckle, simply because he should've expected it. "Hey, Miss Spinnet! Smart thinking, I have to say." Especially with the fire protection charms on the walls. It gave him...... ideas. "Sorry to let you down again. No dragons today but, between you and me, you'll get to smash something"

One day, he'd have to figure out a way to incorporate dragons into his lesson. One day.

While Hirsch was good at a number of things, especially concerning defensive magic, making jokes just wasn't one of them. Was it going to stop him from trying, though? Not at all.

"Hello, Miss Toussaint," he said, shooting her a smile, "Thank you. I'm glad you don't think I've hit rock bottom with this setup."

Bad joke? It probably was.

Ah, here was someone else who looked as though they were happy for the lesson! Or, that was what he was taking from the grin on the girl's face.

Was he being biased? Yes.

"Hello, Miss Holden! I'm very well, thanks. How are you?" She was the first one to ask him how he was, actually. Not that he was complaining but it came as a nice surprise.

It was a matter of principle at this point.

And everyone on staff was guilty, as far as he was concerned. Even Hirsch, regrettably. Thus his "Good morning," to the man was rather short and lacked any of its usual--not enthusiasm, but certainly, it lacked interest.

He sent her a small wave.

................ Er.

This was new.

Hirsch blinked at the Gryffindor, the smile on his face vanishing at the short greeting. He didn't know what to pin this down on: getting up on the wrong side of the bed, the IMPS challenges getting to the boy or, and he hated to think about it, something the man had done to upset the boy. Had he done something to upset him?

No, right? Yes? Okay.

The man cleared his throat slightly and made work of readjusting his glasses. "Hello, Levi!" he said, shooting the boy a smile, "I hope you're okay."

Was this another student who lacked interest in the lesson? Did someone put something in the water at Hogwarts?

Though, considering the fact that he'd been teaching here for, what, five years now? This should be normal.

Still, it threw the man off slightly. "Hello, Mr Tate!" He also got a smile and watched as he went to sit by Levi. Huh. Maybe they could cheer the other up in the timespan of this lesson. Or maybe he, Hirsch, shouldn't look into it too much.

Good idea.

Ah! Here was Emmeline.

Though, considering Camilla had told the staff about this adoption case, Hirsch half-expected the young Gryffindor to skip the lesson and opt for mentally preparing herself. The fact that she chose to be here instead was something he could commend her for but was not something he was going to say out loud. No.

So thank you for coming, Emmeline.

Instead, he smiled at the young girl before saying, "Hello, Emmeline. How're you feeling?" It was..... an innocent question but hopefully she knew why he was asking it.

Being someone who noticed a lot of things and constantly preached about constant vigilance, there was no way he hadn't noticed the young Hufflepuff standing off to one corner of the classroom. The corner that was closest to the door.

Huh.

He also noticed the way she didn't participate in activities in his lessons which, well, was worrying. There was a reason why this subject was a core subject; knowing how to defend yourself was key and if she didn't want to learn...... then it worried him. Yeah.

But right now, Hirsch shot Miss Wright a smile and a nod of his head.

Just casually out on the ground digging for and collecting worms and insects earlier.

............. What?

Green eyes shifted from Miss Wright to another Hufflepuff standing by the door. Pogrebins? An amused smile crossed his face as he glanced from the boy to the rocks nearest to him and then back again. Pogrebins. Interesting theory, concerning the rocks, but alas.

"Nope! No Pogrebins. But good guess, Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne."

Time was ticking and, soon enough, it was time to get the lesson started and put the guessers out of their misery. So, taking out his wand, the man flicked it in the direction of the door, making it shut with a sharp SNAP!

Did that get everyone's attention? Good.

"Hello everyone and welcome to another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson!" he said, smiling around at them all as he put his wand away, "I apologise for the lack of seating arrangement but I promise that it'll make sense in a bit." And they might be happy not to have any proper seating. Less to put away, right? "I don't mind if you choose to stand or sit on the cushioned ground or switch between the two as long as you pay attention." Just so that the standers knew that the option of sitting was still there.

"Now!" The one!clap was back again. "Today, we're going to be talking about a creature that everyone is probably aware of and have grown up hearing a lot about. In fact, I'd be surprised if any of you didn't know anything about the creature we're learning about today." Especially exam-takers.

"The topic of today's lesson is........" A rather dramatic pause followed while Hirsch took out his wand and moved it in an intricate fashion to conjure up a holographic image of a large, rather ugly creature with a small head and a very large body. "Trolls! Everyone has to know something about them, from the simple to the more complicated so my question to you is: what do you know about trolls? Give me anything: their characteristics, their weak points, whatever you can think of."

OOC: Look at all these posts! *flails* Class has officially started so please keep chatter to a minimum! If you haven't posted already and want to, feel free to jump in! Just pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time ^^

The question is easy peasy: what do you know about trolls? Anything from their characteristics to their weak points to behaviour. Whatever. However, please be considerate of other people's answers and not repeat any! There's soooooo much information out there, I'm sure you can think of something else.

Also, please try NOT to just copy and paste things from the internet.

I'll continue the lesson by this time tomorrow.

Vivienne was excited for DADA. The seating arrangement was confusing but it would come and make sense of her. She chose to just suck it up and pay attention.

The professor startled her by clapping. Today she was learning about... trolls? Ew! Vivienne raised her hand and said, "I know that trolls are downright stupid and can be downright pea brains."

2111jen 07-15-2017 07:52 PM

What did Jonas know about trolls? Well...a lot of things. Of all the things he knew about them...the only thing that could come to mind was that trolls were really slow and they could grow to be really tall and they are dimwitted. But what else? Aha! Jonas raised his hand and spit out an answer.
"Trolls have a taste for our flesh and they would also eat fish," he said.

Goblinfrog 07-15-2017 08:00 PM

Yep she knew about trolls! Once upon a time a long time ago 9when she was ten) she'd seen one while visiting Romania. It was a guard troll and she'd never forgotten how scary it looked.

The rocks must have something to do with trolls then. Most trolls had grayish skin, just like these rocks. Hmmm.

Her hand shot into the air. "Trolls are able to speak some human words and phrases and can be taught a little, but they are still classified as beasts instead of beings by our Ministry due to how dangerous they are." Speaking of which, she had a question, but she'd not ask right away.

lemon 07-15-2017 08:08 PM

Who was that small child joining them? Nicky knew the Hufflepuff at a glance, recalling some common room run-ins, but he mostly rang bells in relation to Genny. Didn't that kid follow her around a lot? Carry her books and things? Weird.

He should have known Levi would attract oddballs. IMPS champion and all— or so he'd heard. Like this Tate would be caught attending a challenge and consorting with AMERICANS (other than a select few exceptions, okay?).

Anyhow, he'd just ignore the youngster, so long as he didn't make noise. Or breathe.

"Trolls, sir?" Nicholas raised his hand. "I think their whiskers are pretty powerful. M'tad's got one in his wand."

ArianaBlack 07-15-2017 08:43 PM

Awwwwwwwww. No dragons? Zoryn couldn't help but feel disappointed. YET AGAIN. But she was excited for the lesson nevertheless. Especially when Professor H revealed that they'd be learning about TROLLS. HEY! Wait a minute. How come they were learning about trolls but they've never gotten to learn about DRAGONS? Both are technically creatures!!! They could've had a lesson on both! Why not both? Y'know?

But alas, trolls. What the heck was there to know about those???? Aside from the grades she no doubt make on her OWLs, trolls weren't something that Zor expected to ever encounter. Thus, she didn't know much about them. Except maybe one thing.... "They're HUGE and weigh LOTS!!" She threw both of her hands in the air to try to show JUST HOW HUGE they were.... Sort of.

2111jen 07-15-2017 08:53 PM

As everyone was responding, of course, Zoryn was here, her response was ALWAYS the loudest.
Joy he thought to himself dryly.
Why couldn't she just grow up? She was only two years younger than him so...he just sighed and shrugged. It was what ever he guessed. He wasn't going to give up in being her friend though.

griffin 07-15-2017 10:52 PM

It wasn't that Isa didn't want to learn, it was more of a fear about learning about all the dark stuff. She didn't like it. Really she wanted to be able to defend herself, but she hoped that she wouldn't need it because she was afraid of facing the dark magic they learned about in this class. All of her life she had been sheltered from anything that might harm her. Okay, so honestly she didn't really want to learn in DADA, but she wanted to want to learn. Isa knew how important self defence skills were, even at Hogwarts where she was supposed to be safe. Especially at Hogwarts where unexpected things happened all the time. Self defence might one day be the difference between life and death. Maybe she should talk to Professor Hirsch. Isa knew that things couldn't stay this way for her forever. Eventually she would have to learn about the evil things in the world and how to defend herself. Just maybe not today.

Oh, trolls? Isa didn't know much about trolls, but she knew that they were violent and could hurt people. She didn't like violence. "Trolls are very violent and aggressive." That was all she had to say. The young hufflepuff was no expert on trolls. All she knew was that trolls were violent, and violence was wrong. Trolls sounded highly immoral. Did trolls have morals? Could they tell right from wrong? Did they know how bad violence was? It was awful, how there was so much violence in the world. It just wasn't right.

Cassirin 07-16-2017 02:27 AM

The relationship of trolls to rocks didn't make sense to Katy yet, but she sure appreciated the effort the professor made in tossing puns her way. She flashed him a grin and the double thumbs up for his effort. Rock bottom. She'd missed that one.

"There are three sub-species of troll, mountain, river, and forest. Obviously, named that way because of their preferred habitat, but they have widely varying physical characteristics." It sounded like a book answer, didn't it? "And they're super ugly, sir."

NifflerFan 07-16-2017 02:30 AM

Emmeline wasn't really up for talking about her feelings but she appreciated the professor's asking. She shot him a thank-you type smile instead of saying anything and tried to not think about stuff outside the lesson. Her pygmy puff was hiding in her top pocket as usual now, so she glanced down at Luna to feel better.

Then it was time to start. Trolls, hmm... She thought that her classmates had already given good answers, but maybe she could talk about its weakness? How would she escape a troll... The first year's hand shot up when she thought of something, but she wasn't sure about this answer really. "I think that since trolls are really big and heavy and stupid, that maybe wizards could confuse them with lots of loud or like, flashy spells and stuff. And then the wizard would have more time to run away super fast or think of the next spell, maybe?" Like she said, she wasn't sure. But maybe that would work for a first move against a troll.

Charely Potter 07-16-2017 02:31 AM

Hmm.. Kirk's eyes did briefly look at the purple.. thing. But only until his attention was called by the start of the class. He didn't want to sit just yet, so he remained up while the topic turned to Trolls.

Oh.. So what did he know about trolls? "I know Trolls are the worst markings you can get on exams so that'd mean they're not bright at all." That was one thing, other than the other well-known answers. "And they do not belong in the dungeon."

RandomRaven 07-16-2017 03:17 AM

While waiting for the lesson to start, Ava just stood there tapping her foot on the soft floor. She saw Olivia Phillips entered the room and smiled at her. "Welcome back." Yeah, she knew about the incident that happened to her fellow lion and it's good to know that she's getting better. And there was Noelle Summers. "It's weird that you're the one who's more often to call me 'love' than my own dear boyfriend." She grinned. The Gryffindor prefect was known for her affectional behavior towards her best friends like her. Sometimes she wondered if Phillip was jealous about this, you know? Well... maybe not.

As the DADA professor started the lesson and mentioned that the students were allowed to sit at the squishy floor, Ava decided to keep standing because... There's no particular reason for that, she loved standing. They're going to learn about trolls? Huh, interesting. The Gryffindor put her hand up as Professor Hirsch asked them. "Trolls originally came from Scandinavia, but I heard that they can be found all across Europe. Also, although they are not that smart but some of them can be trained as security trolls."

Kimothy 07-16-2017 05:10 AM

Greetings to friends + first question!

Of course it was nice to see Vivian early to class, Professor. Hadn't she always been early to Defense Against the Dark Arts? The Slytherin couldn't seem to find a valid reason to not attend said class, for all the reasons.

How was she? The question made Vivian beam even more if that was possible. "I'm feeling super today, Professor!" She said while nodding and maintaining her smile. "And I hope you're feeling super as well." Sure, this was sort of small talk, but she didn't mind. They were both the only people in the room as of now so striking up a conversation was appreciated, not that Vivian gave a care if Professor Hirsch preferred to remain in silence. "Every class deserves a special song, Professor!" GIGGLE. Maybe she'd make that a thing from now on, and she definitely loved to challenge herself with finding a specific song for each DADA class. She'd have to up her skills, but her train of thought was halted when the other students began pouring in.

The fourth year looked up and smiled at those she knew, giving them each a wave. "Hi Ava, Liv, Stasya, Miss Noelle, Olivia, Derf!" The other students she didn't know weren't left unnoticed, as Vivian gave them all polite smiles as they entered the room. That way, they weren't being left out and ignored.

Moving on with the lessons... which was about trolls apparently. Vivian blinked because of course she knew what they were, but she never really gave thought as to what they actually did and do. She nodded along as her fellow school mates shared their answers. Yup, she knew a few of those facts. The fourth year raised her hand to share her view. "I've never really met a troll, Professor, but I think they like to grunt. Like this..." she said, and then gave her best, although sounded more like clearing her throat, Troll!grunt as an example.

Cue the innocent Fairfield smile.

SilverTiger 07-16-2017 08:44 AM

“I’m good!,” Stasya had replied, as Professor Hirsch had returned her greeting. She decided that he was good too, because she’d gotten a grin from him too, and she was still distracted by her excitement over Liv being there again. Even if she wasn’t sure if the older girl was going to be okay during the whole lesson. There was that whole ‘be ready to fight’ thing after all. Maybe fighting wouldn’t be good for her, but then maybe Professor Hirsch would make sure everything was okay. He was god at that. She knew it for a fact now.

She was going to stay sitting by Liv, though, giving Emmeline and Vivian grins as they’d acknowledged her. Except she was worried about her best friend too. There was lots going on, even if she knew she didn’t know all of it. She knew Emmeline wasn’t acting like she usually did, before her parents were all mean and stuff. Worried enough that she’d completely forgotten to answer the question about trolls, but then most of what she knew about them had been said. She wasn’t sure she knew anything else.

Hey Ju 07-16-2017 08:57 AM

Matt was REALLY looking forward to whatever it was they were learning about in this lesson since he saw the notice. He was READY TO FIGHT, alright!

The classroom arrangement made him even more excited and when professor Hirsch asked the first question he nearly fell off his imaginary chair.

TROLLS!!! MERLIN, they were goimg to fight TROLLS! He hoped it would be an actual troll and not just a dummy this time. They needed real life practice, you know? Trolls out there were probably nothing like dummies.

HE WAS READY!!!! Standing up and all.

He nearly forgot to answer the question. "They STINK! Like, for real." Literally.

DuckyLinJi 07-16-2017 09:11 AM

Deciding to stand, Mason snapped his book he had been reading before class closed and placed it in his bag before straightening back up. He placed his arms in his robe pockets and looked to the front.

He was curious about what the topic of today would be about and when the Professor said it he had to agree. You had to be REALLY stupid if you didn't know what trolls were. While students gave their answers, Mason listened and memorized them so that he did not copy someone elses answer and when it was his turn he lowered his hand first.

"Apart from Dragons, the trolls who are a bit more intelligent than the others are trained and used to guard places or objects. Which, in my opinion, is very dangerous because they're very unpredictable and can attack the one they're working for in an instant"

PhoenixRising 07-16-2017 01:04 PM

Uh, what was up with the lack of proper seating? Did Hirsch KNOW all the desks were replaced with rocks and mats and cushions? Well, duh, of course he probably knew ... unless someone had interrogated him and maybe they were polyjuicing themselves as Hirsch?

Best to be vigilant here, Sky decided, as she took a seat close to the door so she can make a quick escape if necessary.

And they were talking about trolls, which there were lots of comments being tossed around about their intelligence, or lack thereof. Wait, what did Kirk say? Lowest score one could get on their exams, which was symbolic of their brightness? Really? Is that why it was named a Troll if you did poorly? Why had Skylar not realized this before?!? Also, did Vivian just grunt? Sorry, but seeing one of your best friends grunt, when you weren't doing so in the joking setting, the fourth year let out a giggle!snort.

Right, focus.

"Trolls can be up to twelve feet tall in height, with the mountain troll being the largest and most vicious of the three types of trolls." They also consumed raw flesh, which ... uh, did Hirsch bring a troll to class with him today? Yea, escaping might definitely be an option, which was weird for Skylar Diggory to even be considering ... but it was better than the possibility of being some vicious creature's lunch.

Schroyers 07-16-2017 02:50 PM

Oliver grinned at Hirsch's response. "Your class is always interesting, Professor." ... Trolls? What did Trolls have to do with a sticky floor? Or a purple thing? Huh.. Maybe it was just a misdirect?

Whatever.. What did Oliver know about Trolls? Hirsch was about to get some signature Oliver Lupin word!vomit. "Trolls are omnivores, but that has more to do with their lack of intelligence and willingness to eat anything. Their whiskers have been used for wandcores and they were at one time classified by the ministry as 'Beings' due to walking on two feet but once the ministry found out about their low intellect levels they were reclassified as a four X beast." It wasn't too much, he didn't want to go on and on but between his CoMC studies and HoM he had plenty of facts rattling around in his head.

Olivia hadn't known what she'd been expecting... Two months was a long time to be away (and out of people's minds), but most everyone was being very kind. Little Stasya and Emmeline.... Her smol Gryffindor loves. Isa and Noelle, too. She tried not to feel too embarrassed by the series of unfortunate events that had taken her away, but stopped herself. There was nothing to feel shame over, as it simply hadn't been her fault... Of course, this only made her wonder who's fault it actually had been, but that was a downward spiral meant for another time and place. Not in the middle of Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Anyway.....with a wide smile, the blonde returned Stasya's hug; pressing her face into the top of the younger girl's hair. After a few moments, she tugged Emmeline into it, too. GRYFFINDOR GROUP SNUGGLE! Also, Olivia definitely appreciated the quieter tones, as her head seemed to be nothing but a giant 'ache' lately. The healers had mentioned that she may experience headaches for a while still, but that they should lessen over time. Merlin's chest, Liv hoped this was the case. "Let's have a slumber party tonight." Surely a lot had happened while she'd been MIA. Besides, she wanted to catch-up with her favorites.

And then, she noticed Levi Kenning... Olivia wanted to speak to him, but figured it'd be best left for later. There was just.... a lot she needed to say; Thank you, mostly....considering he'd helped save her life.

"Kinda sluggish, but I didn't want to miss sitting in." Yah, the blonde lion!lady wouldn't be able to really participate, but here she was! Anyway, it was better to get the notes first-hand, and not have to depend so much on Jacen Reed. Bless him. He'd really gone above and beyond for her. "I'll try not to get in the way." Yup, she'd just be...sitting off to the side, watching everything. Cause this girl was a visual learner. Written notes only did so much.

"They like to guard bridges." Or that's what muggle fairy tales had taught her..... Ahem, sorry Professor. "They like to eat people, but aren't too picky about what they put in their mouths, even if they do prefer it. I think they like fish, too." For a brief moment, Olivia was reminded of Sméagol, from Lord of the Rings...and him eating the fish raw.

Gag. It was a sight one couldn't easily unsee.

"I guess it would depend on the type of troll...if you're thinking about weakness?" It was a question since she honestly didn't know. Anyway, surely that varied; considering whatever environments they were physically used to.

"It IS Sir!" Sam replied excitedly, pulling the book back out of her bag and holding it up so he could see the title. It was the Common Room copy of the one he'd been reading when she'd recently gone to visit his office. She'd be finding it to be an interesting read indeed.

And as for getting tired? Nah, Sam was full of energy today, and quite happy leaning against this rock here.

As for the topic of the lesson, Sam looked around the room curiously. Was Hirsch keeping a real live troll in here somewhere? The rocks seemed like their sort of territory, but was the ceiling high enough for a troll? It was often hard to just scale from textbooks.

"They belong to the Genus Troglodytarum," she replied, hoping she'd got the pronounciation correct. "And mountain trolls often ride graphorns...which the graphorns don't like very much, because, as Skylar said, the mountain trolls are the heaviest."

T8 and Derf acknowledgements + answering Hirsch's question

Levi was about to open his mouth to say something to Nicholas Tate--probably 'hello,' maybe 'good morning,' either would have sufficed--when Derfael joined them. Tate didn't look particularly pleased, but Derfael looked quite excited, so maybe the younger boy was going to bring in some slight balance here. He offered both Hufflepuff boys a mild smile and would gone on to throw in a nod or two for good measure--manners were important, after all--but Hirsch decided to speak just then. To say hello and call him Levi instead of Mr. Kenning and to smile at him and do the whole glasses thing that would have normally worked, but this time it would not. Levi was quite resolute about that.

Maybe.

He had to keep himself from smiling by looking pointedly away, so the automatic smile did not actually flourish as it intended to, but. The corners of his mouth did indeed twitch. So, he reached up to cover it with one of his palms.

It'd been a close call. Certain reactions to certain things were just intent on putting up a good fight, it seemed.

Good news was that class had started and everyone had something to say about trolls. Levi couldn't say he'd have preferred pogrebins as Derf had suggested--trolls were a rather more exciting topic, of course--but it was interesting to him (and kind of weird, maybe, just a tad) how much his peers seemed to know about the beasts. Or beings, as someone had so adequately pointed out.

He'd had no idea trolls were so popular, but this was why he was sent to school, really. Learn something new every day and all that. He lowered his hand from his mouth. "Trolls are stupid but terribly strong. With the ability to be quite vicious." Obviously. "Which makes for a very dangerous combination, really." Super strong, over-grown toddlers,
really. "Though, possibly, with the correct tools and training, it'd be better to face a troll than a giant. If anything because giants are notoriously smarter."

Downright stupid and downright pea brains?

Hirsch was amused. Very much so. "I take it you don't like trolls?" He didn't really expect anyone to like the topic at hand but this description was nothing short of amusing. "You're right: they're really very stupid and outsmarting them shouldn't be hard. Well done!"

That was a nice transition, wasn't it?

"You're completely right. They understand a limited number of human words and phrases with some of the smart ones going on to become security trolls." Anyhow, he'd just ignore the youngster, so long as he didn't make noise. Or breathe.

"Trolls, sir?" Nicholas raised his hand. "I think their whiskers are pretty powerful. M'tad's got one in his wand."

This was another interesting fact.

"Trolls," Hirsch said, giving the Hufflepuff a nod of his head, "It's interesting that your dad's got troll whiskers in his wand. Their whiskers are powerful and used in wands but it's said that they're inferior to the cores that we're so used to." He half wanted to ask questions about the troll whiskers and the wand but decided against it. This wasn't the time or the place.

Sort of.

This answer right here made him smile. That and the way she threw her hands in the air.

It was the enthusiasm, you know?

"Well, yes. If you want the specifics, they're roughly 12 feet tall, give or take, and weigh about a tonne. I think the size, along with the violent nature, is what makes people tend to be scared of them in the first place." But size was no guarantee of power, was it? "Well done, Miss Spinnet."

He had to admit: he was glad that Miss Wright had answered. It was one step closer to wanting to participate in the lesson.

Or, well, that was how Hirsch was seeing it.

"Exactly," he said, giving her a nod and a smile, "Their violent tendencies are what makes them so dangerous and makes the Ministry classify them as beasts, not beings. Well done, Miss Wright."

"There are three sub-species of troll, mountain, river, and forest. Obviously, named that way because of their preferred habitat, but they have widely varying physical characteristics." It sounded like a book answer, didn't it? "And they're super ugly, sir."

The grin and the double thumbs up gave him the sign that she approved of his lame puns. Heh. Maybe his jokes weren't that bad, after all.

"Couldn't have put it better myself." Smile. "You're very right: there are three types of trolls and you can easily tell them apart because they all look different, while still looking like trolls.

Here was another answer that made him smile.

While most people had gone on to mention the characteristics of a troll, Emmeline was talking about its weaknesses and ways to get past it. Naturally, it made the man very happy.

"Exactly!" he said, nodding along, "Both confusing them and running really fast are methods that could work when you're faced with a troll, considering how slow and stupid they are. In fact, I'd say that's the first point of defence, if you find yourself in that situation. Very well done, Emmeline!"

Oh.. So what did he know about trolls? "I know Trolls are the worst markings you can get on exams so that'd mean they're not bright at all." That was one thing, other than the other well-known answers. "And they do not belong in the dungeon."

Considering what Kirk had come to talk to him about earlier on in the year, Hirsch wasn't at all surprised that the Ravenclaw knew the grades and what they stood for and why Troll was a grade on the list. "Nice connection you've made there. It's not a grade anyone wants to get for any of their exams, after all, so you could say that it acts as motivation." Sort of.

He was wondering when the place of origin part would come up and, now, here it was!

"Absolutely correct. Scandinavia is where they're said to have come from but since then, they've spread. Hogwarts itself has housed a troll or two over the years." Interesting fact right there. "I'm glad you've mentioned security trolls as well. Quite a few people use them to guard their buildings or treasures since people are less willing to fight a giant troll."

Feeling super? This, right here, was something that made him smile. "I'm glad you're in such a good mood. You could say that. I'm excited to be teaching." Not that this was something she probably cared about but it was true. "That's nice of you, Vivian. You can be the one to provide the soundtrack to my lessons."

That grunt? That was also going in the list of unexpected things to happen in this lesson.

Hirsch, once again, let out a small chuckle at that but nodded at her. "Exactly like that. Well done!"

Quiet responses were to be expected and it didn't surprise him that they were coming up. As long as it wasn't a cause for concern, he didn't really mind. So, at Stasya's lack of an answer, the man simply smiled, pushed his glasses a little further up his nose and then moved on.

The excitement from this Gryffindor was nice to see. Really nice. It meant that the boy was ready to be part of this lesson and would participate.

Though, he hoped he wouldn't disappoint the boy because there really were no trolls or dummies here. Sorry.

But this answer? Uh. "I mean, you're certainly not wrong about that. If someone tells you that you smell like a troll, that might be a cause for concern."

Oh!

Oh!

This was not something he expected. He knew he'd get answers based on characteristics and what the creatures actually do but mentioning the dangers with integrating them into society was new. "That is a clever observation. You do run a risk of the trolls getting out of hand and rebelling, in a way. But I guess the people in charge would have their own ways of dealing with that."

Which sounded sad, now that he thought about it.

Hirsch was very much aware of the lack of seating and, in fact, the reactions amused him.

Constant vigilance, indeed.

"Exactly, Miss Diggory," he said, giving the Slytherin a nod of his head, "They also carry around a club so they really are the ones you should be scared of the most between the three types. Well done!"

His class was always interesting? Well, if there was one way to get the man to smile a wide smile, this was it. "I'm glad that you think so. Thank you, Oliver."

Word!vomit, indeed. The man's eyebrows shot up at the answer the Slytherin was giving. "That is some impressive knowledge you've got about trolls. Well done!" Really. The man was impressed. "You're completely right, of course. Their aggressive nature adds onto their classification as a beast but that is why, adding onto what you said, they're not classified as beings."

For a brief moment, Olivia was reminded of Sméagol, from Lord of the Rings...and him eating the fish raw.

Gag. It was a sight one couldn't easily unsee.

"I guess it would depend on the type of troll...if you're thinking about weakness?" It was a question since she honestly didn't know. Anyway, surely that varied; considering whatever environments they were physically used to.

Guard bridges? "Yes, they do. River trolls in particular like to guard bridges and catch their prey, humans and fish, from there." Not a nice thought, was it? "You're completely right, well done!"

Ah! Weakness!

Now this is what he liked to hear. Hirsch smiled but instead of asking her to elaborate on that answer, he simply said, "Hold that thought, Miss Phillips."

That book! Was it.....? "Ah, will you look at that?" Hirsch had expected the Ravenclaw to pull out a book on the latest magical theories around Herbology or Arithmancy but to see the book that was in his office pop out of her bag was something else. The dimpled smile made a return once again. "I'm glad you're enjoying it, then."

"Exactly," he said, giving her a nod, "Graphorns give them scars as a way of attacking for the way mountain trolls treat them. Well done, and good attempt at that genus name." Not even he would've attempted it.

Should he be worried? Because this wasn't a reaction he usually got from the Gryffindor. Or should he put up missing signs for Levi's happy spirit?

Hmm.

Right now, he was going to concentrate on the answer, instead. "Exactly! Their violent tendencies are what makes them so dangerous in the first place." Though, there was a way to defend yourself against them so that wasn't something to worry about, at least. "I like your comparison of trolls and giants. Well done!"

Did it look like anyone else was going to chip in? Nope.

Carry on? He was going to.

"Okay!" he called to the class in general, "Those were some great answers given. It does seem as though everyone knows something about these creatures." Good!

"In case you weren't listening," Why not? "Trolls are creatures that are very strong but also very stupid. They're violent, aggressive and are said to be unpredictable. Their motto is act first, never think about it ever. This is something you could use to your advantage because, as humans, you're all good at thinking and problem-solving." If not, that was something to work on. "They come from Scandinavia and are said to be related to the Yeti but, of course, the characteristics of the two creatures have changed a lot over the years."

"There are three types of trolls: mountain trolls, river trolls and forest trolls. Mountain trolls are the largest and most vicious of the three: standing at 12 feet tall and weighing over a tonne. They're bald and pale grey and are usually seen carrying clubs. They are the ones most people are scared of, between the three." Just saying. "They ride Graphorns, and did so in August 2020 when they were travelling through Hungary."

"River trolls have short hair, purple skin and are very hairy. They're usually found beneath bridges or in the middle of rivers. They're generally less than 12 feet tall, as are the forest trolls." Breathe. "Forest trolls are pale green in colour but they have a few straggly hairs on their head. They're found in forests and woodland creatures, as you can tell from their name. It's been said that the Forbidden Forest has some forest trolls in there but you're more likely to come across centaurs in there than you are of forest trolls." And he didn't think they were anywhere near the grounds in the first place.

Breathe.

"Now! Trolls can do rudimentary magic, which is a brand of lesser magic that's also used by hags. They don't really use this a lot and prefer to use their aggressive nature, instead." So beware of the clubs, if anything. "In saying that, though, there is a way to defend yourselves against them. Picture this: you're faced with a troll, any of the three types of trolls, and you need to get out of there as quickly as possible. What would be your first point of action? What spells would you use?"

OOC: I'm loving these answers! Look at you guys go!

The question is more along the lines of spellwork: if you were faced with a troll, how would you try and get out of there? What spells would you use against a troll?

I'm going to carry on tomorrow at roughly 7:30pm GMT+1.

Thanks, lovelies :loved:

"If they're carrying some weapon you can try and use that against them, since they're not that bright." Matt said, lowering the hand he had raised. "Or trick it to trip over something or lead them into an awkward space they can't get out of. Then the next step could be figuring out how to knock them out." The boy thought out loud as he spoke.

He then thought about what he had just said and wasn't too sure that would be the best idea. "Well, Stunning spells probably wouldn't work, so I would try and use something... anything, really, that was lying around. Or hanging around." He shrugged and continued to think how he'd approach the situation if he ever came across a troll by himself.

"I wouldn't just leave it there wide awake and ready to attack, in case someone came across them after me." Surely that was the right thing to do? "What if I just ran off and then somebody encountered the beast after me and then died? Their death would be on ME. No, thanks." No one would be able to live with THAT. Matt surely wouldn't.

The Hufflepuff provided Hirsch with a furrowed lift of his bushy eyebrows. Was he implying something about his father's wand?

It was most certainly adequate and functional, mind you.

Most of Nicky's focus was now being utilized to mentally defend his tad's magical capabilities, rather than to answer the posed question. Point of action? Spells to use? Why would he KNOW that? Anyone who wanted to make a speedy getaway and possessed a few brain cells would run.

He wouldn't say that, though. Last time he'd been so crass in a lesson, someone had most definitely sought him out after class...

This discussion was geared towards Gryffindors, really. Discrimination!

What spells...what spells....hum...Jonas wouldn't have any idea. He bit his lip. Hummm...oh! Raising his hand,he had two responses. One of them being a question. He wouldn't mind right?
"I would say a paralizing spell" he said. "You know. To make them stop? And is it true that Trolls live under bridges?" Jonas asked. "That's what some muggles say."

Cassirin 07-17-2017 02:14 AM

If it was up to Katy, she would be smart enough to run if facing a troll on her own. And why would she ever be facing down a troll? Just wandering through the woods after dark, perhaps? Or maybe she'd hang out under a bridge, just for fun? Unless the professor was suggesting she might run into a troll just in her every day travels.

That was a scary thought.

Katy raised her hand. "Professor, I'm thinking that their larger size means that regular stunners won't work on them. Those are intended for people and don't work the same on non-humans. But regular old knocking them out or slowing them down would work through non-magical means. Maybe levitate a tree or rock on their heads. Or just swipe their feet out from under them with a good blast of wind."

RandomRaven 07-17-2017 02:30 AM

she listened to Professor Hirsch's explanation about what's the difference between each trolls. But for her, they're just same: a gigantic strong creature with a pea-size brain.

What spell that she's going to use against the troll?

Huh, this was tricky. Despite of how dumb they were, but trolls were strong, okay? An ordinary stunning spell probably wasn't enough to defeat them. "I think I am going to use rope conjuring spell aiming to their feet, or maybe stickfast hex, Professor. Because I need to make them not to have ability to chase me down. Petrificus Totalus can also work." Ava answered his question. After all, she was a Gryffindor but at least she tried not to recklessly attack the creature.

"Trolls! Everyone has to know something about them, from the simple to the more complicated so my question to you is: what do you know about trolls? So not pogrebins. Okay. Well... KINDA disappointing but the Hufflepuff supposed he would survive. SOMEHOW

Trying to settle in - but the rocks were kinda distracting and he kept expecting them to pop to life or something - his head snapped back around when the professor mentioned that they WOULD be studying creatures today.

OKAY HE COULD FORGET ABOUT HIS CONSPIRACY THEORY FOR JUST A LITTLE BIT! FILTER ON!

TROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLL in the dungeon.

OH OH OH there was LOADS that Derf could say about them. LOADS!

LIIIIIIIIKE...they are grouped in the taxonomical genus Troglodytarum. Which was like...REALLY fun to say aloud. Troglodytarum. Troglodytarum! Also that they originated in Scandinavia but are now aaaaaaaaaaall over Europe and super strong but also super dumb and because they are super dumb they are only considered half-sentient. Which made him wonder something...like like...did that make the Whomping Willow more smart than a troll?

Hmmmmmmmmmm....

Besides their height and stuff...they also only had two toes on their feet with GIANT toenails. Were trolls flexible? Probably not with those massive forms...but then like how did they clip their toenails? Did other trolls do it for them? With like...their teeth?

Thinking about troll toenails distracted him distracted him from actually raising his hand and answering the question. Oops.

Okay but if Derf were faced with a troll his first instinct probably wouldn't be to leave if we are all being honest with each other here.

So his first instinct was prooooobably not the sort of response that the professor was looking for.

Okay but did the professor HAVE to mention centaurs because now Derf was thinking about asking Theroes to introduce him to a forest troll too. What had the question been?

"I'm not s-s-so good with s-spells," Derf answered. "S-So I probably wouldn't us-se magic at all...but trying to trip them by like...making them hit something...like a ROCK while they chas-sed me seems legit."

Schroyers 07-17-2017 03:25 AM

If He were to face a Troll? Maybe one day.. He planned to see the world eventually. Not sure when but Oliver had plenty of plans. Long term, he wasn't good at short term planning and there was always someone there to remind him of that.

"Well Trolls are very stupid so maybe fighting it wouldn't be the best course of action at all? You could distract it with light or sound. But i suppose if i had to fight it I might go with a few charms to protect myself instead of trying to injure the troll." You couldn't mount on offense if you'd been crushed by a club. Or at least this was Oliver's train of thought.

NifflerFan 07-17-2017 03:54 AM

Emmeline beamed at Miss Olivia when she suggested a slumber party. That sounded like loads of fun!

And then it turned out the professor knew way, way a lot about trolls. She learned stuff that wasn't even in Fantastic Beasts! Also, she kind of wanted to see a troll riding a Graphorn now. Maybe meet one of the forest trolls too, 'cause she was sure it wouldn't attack if she was all polite and stuff. Trolls are super aggressive and get mad easily, uh huh, but they're also so stupid that maybe if she brought it food, they could be friends? Mostly she just wanted to pet a Graphorn.

She'd already kind of, sort of answered the professor's second question when she'd said her answer to the first one, so she tried to think of what exactly she would do. Like if it was an already-angry mountain troll or something where being friends wasn't really an option. Raising her hand, she replied:"I'd cast purple firecrackers not AT the troll directly--" it wasn't okay to hurt trolls for no reason -- "but maybe kind of close to him or in the distance behind him so he has to turn around and look. OR if I knew how to cast a bunch of dark smoke, I'd do that and then run off before he can see properly again." Though the smoke idea ran the risk of being trampled maybe. The wizard would have to be SUPER careful how they cast it, but then, if you're up against a TROLL, you have to be super careful about any magic you use anyway.

Size was DEFINITELY no guarantee of power because Zoryn was TINY but one day she planned to takeover the world. Don't worry, it'll happen.

She was also VERY pleased to see that she could make her Professor smile like that. This was a good time. She enjoyed this very much.

As for the next question.... It made her THINK. Her first plan of action and the first spell she would use were very different questions because Zoryn would definitely not use a spell as her first plan of action. "I'd probably try to run under it's legs!" There was a method to her madness, okay? "'Cause I could confuse the troll and it'd try to catch me under it's legs but then trip up and fall AND THEN I'd escape scratch free!"

Zoryn Spinnet was SO prepared to take on a troll.

Trolls: 0 Zoryn Spinnet: 500

Was that the right answer?

PhoenixRising 07-17-2017 11:27 AM

Wait.... why were they talking about defense against trolls again??? Was Professor Pretty-Boy Hirsch planning on dropping them by the mountains or river with trolls there? Had she missed something? Because while she might not have a clue what she wanted to do post-Hogwarts, being put in a situation where she might have to defend herself against trolls was not on the list.

Run. That's what she'd do. Wait, were they assuming they were old enough to apparate by the time the scenario arrived? Because if so ...

All these thoughts about what she would do, she realized her classmates had listed off some AMAZING ideas for distractions. Duh, distract the troll, because that was necessary first, before getting out of there. And yea, magic might not work on the troll, but around it ...

"Perhaps the Impediment Jinx to slow its actions down to give you time to escape? Unless of course apparition is an option...." Yes, she had to throw that in, because she was no Gryffindor. Fighting it was not an option.

Angie 07-17-2017 04:23 PM

Well done was great and he should not have wanted to preen at a Hirsch compliment but well. Again, the boy had to make a point of looking elsewhere instead at the Defense professor.

"Cast a daydream charm to distract them. It lasts thirty minutes so that's ample time to either run or incapacitate." A slight one shoulder shrug. "But if one wants to incapacitate--Orbis should work. Or incarcolvo." But he would probably run. Maybe. It was a likely possibility that he would, anyway.

Professor Hirsch was receiving all the smiles from Vivian today. Was she to be blamed for the obvious fact that the man was lovely? No, of course not. And she would gladly provide a soundtrack and a couple of theme songs for his lessons. It just made her even more pumped to get to Defense Against the Dark Arts class in that situation. Music made learning fun, and it really made all the difference in the mood of the classroom.

And yes, he also got a thumbs up for not making her feel awkward for grunting in front of all of her classmates. Appreciation for Professor Hirsch. What a great man, he was.

Vivian blinked at the obvious information overload and quickly scribbled on her parchment to match the Professor's pace so as not to miss out a detail. Though, well... the neatness and readability was compromised, but she was sure she'd be able to understand it later when she rewrote her notes. Merlin, her handwriting looked so twisted that it sent the curls on her hair to shame.

Oh! Oh! What would Vivi do during a troll encounter? She hadn't given much thought to that, really, but she raised her hand to share what she would have done in a heartbeat. "I would... throw a big rock or block of wood at the troll, Professor. That way, maybe it'd be distracted and knock its brain a little." That sounded a little funny, but the Slytherin tried to conceal it. Only a tiny smile had formed on her face. Hihihi. "And then maybe take that few seconds of temporary distraction to think of a spell." She purposely left her answer at that... because she didn't know what spell to use.

LOL. Sorry, Hirsch.

Mentions of Vivi and Ava

Did Noelle call Ava love more than her own boyfriend?? Probably. Ava and Noelle were close. Very close. She just grinned at her wifey and nudged her before the class started.

Then Vivi was saying hello to everyone and called her Miss Noelle. She giggled. "Hey Miss Vivi." Noelle said with a little finger wiggle to her new friend. She tried getting Emm and Vivi to stop calling her Miss Noelle but it didn't seem to be working.

Trolls.

Ohh. This was an interesting topic. Noelle grinned at Professor Hirsch. While others gave information about what they knew about trolls, she took notes. She didn't sit on the squishy floor so taking notes was a little hard.

And what spells would you use against a troll?? A lot of people gave great answers. Noelle could only imagine that trolls' hides were tough and it would take some problem solving to actually beat them. Or in this case, escape them. Which seemed to be the best option with 12 foot tall aggressive.... beings like them.

"What about glacius spell to make it hard for them to find their footing?? " Noelle offered.

Charely Potter 07-17-2017 05:16 PM

Kirk hadn't quite expected that reaction from Hirsch. It felt good to be right, you know. So now he wanted to hear how they would possibly take on any sort of troll. Well, nearly everyone had the same idea to distract it or slow it down.

There were many solutions, he couldn't quite decide on the best one that wasn't already mentioned.. Except, "Well, first I'd want to silence my shoes so it can't hear me running around it. Then throw a few good sticking charms before casting a fire charm on it. I want to keep it hot off my trail." So to speak. Taking one troll on without any sign of help or witnesses, would be like a waste of time to him.

"I would love to see a troll sing, so I'd cast Cantis on him." Kitty smiled a bit guiltily when she said that. "That's probably not the best defensive spell, but it's my personal favorite spell and I think maybe a singing troll would be a distracted troll. Obviously that spell wouldn't be best for everyone, just since I've practiced it so well I think it would work for me."

For his praise, Olivia grinned. She still had it, and could still be clever and contribute in lessons. Nearly broken head and all. Though, too much thinking seemed to make her skull throb... Eh, headaches.

.....Anyway, this was just screaming for her duelling expertise, right? Probably not, but Liv had a lot of thoughts on how to get around the enormous power of a troll. Not that her peers hadn't offered up good alternatives, as well. Everyone was always so creative with their suggestions in DADA. It honestly made Olivia most excited about participating with this subject. "There's so many spells that could work, but also, it depends on what you're wanting to do. If you're choosing to stand and fight, which is kinda dumb sometimes, you'd want to use different magic. Levi probably had the best idea about how to handle that." She paused, nodding. More to herself than to others, but still. "Otherwise, I'd go with encasing the troll in a bubble." As she had in hers' and Charlotte's duel. It was an extremely handy tool. "It wouldn't be able to pop itself, as physical strength doesn't work against it."

"Oh...the incantation is Ebublio, too. That would also ensure that the troll doesn't chase after you for a while."......and that was enough talking from her for now. Gosh, sorry for being so long-winded.

This answer was more geared towards using your surroundings against the troll which he liked a lot. Not all spells will work against a troll, something he was going to explain to the class later, so this was a very clever answer.

"And mountain trolls usually do carry clubs so using that against them isn't a bad idea." Which was what three first years did back in Halloween 1991. "You're very right about the stunning spell as well and I'll explain why. But that is some very clever thinking, especially about the possibility of someone else encountering the creature as well. It shows that you're thinking ahead. Well done!"

He wouldn't say that, though. Last time he'd been so crass in a lesson, someone had most definitely sought him out after class...

This discussion was geared towards Gryffindors, really. Discrimination!

Quiet answers were to be expected and he didn't mind them. As long as the boy was paying attention, it didn't bother him whether he was saying something or not.

And no, he didn't think there was anything wrong with Mr Tate's wand.

"I would say a paralizing spell" he said. "You know. To make them stop? And is it true that Trolls live under bridges?" Jonas asked. "That's what some muggles say."

A paralysing spell? Hmm. This was... a difficult one. For a number of reasons.

"That one's a funny one because it almost fits into the same category as the Stunning Spell, which definitely won't work against a troll. Because of their vast size, you have to use a spell that's not only strong but has been cast with a lot of willpower and determination behind it."

"I'll explain shortly but the spell we're going to use has a similar effect to a paralysing spell so hold that thought. You are very, very close." It'll make sense later. "And yes, river trolls hang out under bridges where they jump out at their victims."

And there was that dimpled-grin again. "You're on a roll, Miss Toussaint."

"That is exactly it. If you can use something in your surroundings to knock them over the head, do it. If they have a club on them, use it against them." Pause. "Levitating an entire tree might be a little difficult, though." Just saying.

"A rope conjuring spell might be the best one in this case." Simply because she wasn't applying a spell directly at the troll which would require less effort. "A stickfast hex would be a good one to use to stop them moving. Petrificus Totalus fits along the line of Stunning Spells and is unlikely to work against them." Something he'll explain shortly.

"But good guess!"

Not so good with spells. This reminded the man of another lesson in which he'd asked about the students and their problems with spellcasting and Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne had mentioned something along these lines. He couldn't help but wonder..... had the practice over the years helped with that? Especially Duelling Club?

"In this case, hitting them is probably the best thing you can do, apart from running away. And is the basis of the lesson today so well done!" Smile. "And good inclusion of the rocks here." Was the setup starting to make sense?

"Well Trolls are very stupid so maybe fighting it wouldn't be the best course of action at all? You could distract it with light or sound. But i suppose if i had to fight it I might go with a few charms to protect myself instead of trying to injure the troll." You couldn't mount on offense if you'd been crushed by a club. Or at least this was Oliver's train of thought.

This was another answer that made him smile.

"That is a very good display of self-defence and is probably the best way to deal with the situation. Protect yourself, distract it and then make a run for it while you can.

There were a lot of distraction-based answers coming up, weren't there? Huh. Hirsch didn't know whether to marvel at the level of strategic thinking that was going on or the fact that the students were well-equipped in terms of their defensive knowledge. Sure, thinking about what you'd do in a situation was a lot different to actually being in that situation and doing what you had to do but this was a step.

"Distract and run is an excellent method of getting yourself out of the situation. Trolls aren't very smart so distracting them will come very easily and they're not very fast so running away is probably the best bet. Well done!"

As for the next question.... It made her THINK. Her first plan of action and the first spell she would use were very different questions because Zoryn would definitely not use a spell as her first plan of action. "I'd probably try to run under it's legs!" There was a method to her madness, okay? Zoryn Spinnet was SO prepared to take on a troll.

Trolls: 0 Zoryn Spinnet: 500

Was that the right answer?

The amused smile was back.

Why? This answer. The best part about it was that she wasn't even wrong.

"I mean, that would work. For sure. Trolls aren't very smart so this could work in your favour, especially when mixed with your height." For him? Not so much. Being over six foot tall was not going to help him in this situation. "But that's a great tactic, well done!"

The Impediment Jinx? Hmmm.

There was a pause in which the man just thought about the situation before he gave a proper answer. "The Impediment Jinx isn't a bad spell to use but because you're using a spell directly against the troll itself, you might need to gather a lot of willpower to make it work as effectively as it would against a human. But if you get it to work, that would be a very useful spell to use."

And apparating? That earned the Slytherin an amused smile. "If it is, that's probably the best way to get out of there."

These were three spells that Hirsch hadn't expected anyone to bring up.

"That is some creative thinking, I have to say." He didn't expect anything less, of course, but it had to be said. "The daydream charm would distract them enough to give you time to run. The only question is whether you can get the spell to work on a troll." Reasons why he would explain in a bit. And yes, he also got a thumbs up for not making her feel awkward for grunting in front of all of her classmates. Appreciation for Professor Hirsch. What a great man, he was.

That sounded a little funny, but the Slytherin tried to conceal it. Only a tiny smile had formed on her face. Hihihi. "And then maybe take that few seconds of temporary distraction to think of a spell." She purposely left her answer at that... because she didn't know what spell to use.

LOL. Sorry, Hirsch.

Throw a big rock? Distraction?

Hirsch stole a glance over at the rocks nearest to him and smiled, amused. "I don't see why not. Knocking a troll out or distracting it is probably the best form of attack if you're trapped and you need to get yourself out of the situation.

Glacius!

Glacius!

Hirsch smiled wide and nodded at the Gryffindor Prefect. "Exactly! Use a spell to make it fall itself and, maybe because of the large impact from the fall, it'll knock itself out. All with a minimal effort from you. Well done, Noelle! That's a great plan of action." And he did't really expect anyone to bring up Glacius.

There were many solutions, he couldn't quite decide on the best one that wasn't already mentioned.. Except, "Well, first I'd want to silence my shoes so it can't hear me running around it. "So make the troll stick to the ground and then attack it with fire? You would need a lot of determination and effort to cast a strong enough sticking spell but I don't see why it shouldn't work. Hirsch was wondering where the Gryffindor was going with this answer but the minute Miss Phillips mentioned her desired spell to use, the man smiled wide. A full, dimpled-smile that almost looked as though he'd hit the jackpot.

"Excellent! Really an ingenious spell to use. They use physical spell to their advantage so if you can conjure up a large enough bubble to stop it from using their greatest strength, why not?" Oh, he was happy with this. "Not to mention that it'll give you enough time to get away from there. The only problem would be conjuring up a large enough bubble but if you can do it, you're set. Very well done!"

When it didn't look like anyone else was going to answer, Hirsch gave his hand another clap and spoke, instead, to the whole class. "I have to say, those are some very strategic answers from all of you and I'm impressed! Well done!" Smile.

"A lot of you have really thought about the size of the troll and its level of intelligence when thinking about a way to defend yourself which is the way to go. Trolls are stupid, so distracting them is an excellent method of attack. Even better is running away because trolls aren't very fast in the first place." But this wouldn't be Defence Against the Dark Arts if the option was just to run away.

"Something to remember is the fact that trolls are purely magical creatures and this, mixed with their sheer size, means that they've built up a tolerance to magic. A tolerance that runs through their very blood." Which was why he said certain spells won't work unless you had the willpower. "But that does not mean that they're not affected by spells altogether. It just means that spells are weaker against them so you have to use a lot of determination to make a certain spell work."

"Stunning spells for one, won't work. Spells that are cast on the environment or spells cast to knock it out, by the use of a heavy object, are probably the best bet." This was what worked in the past, after all. "The spell we're going to be looking at today focuses on the very idea of impact. This is a spell to use in the case you don't have a heavy object on you but want to provide enough impact to knock the troll out, giving you time to escape."

There was a pause in which Hirsch waved his wand in an intricate fashion, making a few words appear in the air in large letters:

Quote:

Labefactum
Bludgeoning Hex
Incantation: LAH-beh-FACK-toom
Wand movement: clockwise circular motion around the target and a flick at the end
Light: n/a
Difficulty: fourth year spell
Other: more determination = greater impact

"The Bludgeoning Hex is a spell that causes impact on a targeted area so, if you aim it correctly, you could cause enough impact on the troll to knock it out without using a heavy object." But if they had a heavy object near them, it wasn't a bad idea to use that either. "Almost like a giant, invisible hand punching at a targeted area."

"Today, we're going to be practising that spell on," He paused dramatically to gesture around him. "rocks! I want you to grab a rock, any size you fancy, and start practising the spell on it from a distance. The larger the rock, the harder it'll be to break and so, the more determination you need to make the spell work." Something to keep in mind. "You'll know if it's working if the spell causes the rock to crack and, if it's more powerful, maybe even break apart completely."

Was he missing something? Er.

"NEWT students: I want you to try and cast the spell verbally and then non-verbally. That goes for fifth years if you're already trying non-verbal magic or you want to start trying." The option was there. "Everyone else: verbal magic, please. I'm going to give you......." He paused to glance down at his watch. "10 minutes!"

"Ready? GO!"

OOC: That was a lot of writing oh gosh I'm sorry about the essay ;__;

BUT MINI ACTIVITY TIME!

The activity is: grab a rock, stand at a distance and practice the spell in the quote above. If it works, the rock should start to crack. More determination = greater impact = larger the cracks on the rock/possibly causing it to break in half. Larger rocks will be harder to break!

post 1 - getting a rock

Thinking ahead, naturally came to Kirk in his mind. He couldn't help turning his head at Kitty who suggested getting the troll to sing. That... would work wouldn't it? "Never thought about that." Get it too focused as it could possibly get on why they're singing. He would have to jot that down as another solution, but give credit where it was due whenever possible.

Now the task was to practice the spell. Labefactum Kirk whispered over and over. He went over to the many piles of rocks before sitting down. If he were to get it right, it would have to be in a relaxed state before challenging himself more. He took one that could fit in the palm of his hand. While sitting he began to practice the wand movement first.

Erindipity 07-17-2017 10:55 PM

Okay. Rocks. Destruction. YAS! This was right up Dora's alley... seeing as this was her strength magically. Yep. She had, not only a wand that was particularly wonderful for this form, but she had an affinity for it herself. Double whammy!

The blonde nodded a few times as Professor Enemy spoke. Not for his benefit, but for her own. She did nothing to please Hirsch. Hmph. Moving then toward the piles of rocks she chose one that was the size of an average fifth year. Lol. Okay. So yeah she took several steps back and chewed her lip. To attempt nonverbal first or wait? She had heard Hirsch say verbal first, but YOLO.

Raising her wand in her left hand, the Gryffindor attempted to cast the spell nonverbally first.

What happened?!

Nothing.

But she FELT something.

She'd have to try it again. Dora was definitely determined to break stuff. Always. It was her THING. Not to mention, given recent events, she had a lot of rage fueling her actions... something that she had learned to use to her advantage.

Labefactum she thought super hard at the rock, pointing her wand dead center.

...a small fracture appeared.

HOLY MERLIN'S MOTHER!

Just a tiny fissure, nothing crazy. But she had DONE it. A little.

2111jen 07-18-2017 12:13 AM

They were going to start practising spells?? Already?? Awesome! Jonas was only a fifth year so he has yet to even complete his OWLs much less his NEWTs. Jonas shrugged and went over to get a good size rock,a bit bigger than his palm. Giving Zoryn a sideways glance, the first thought that came to mind for some reason was to throw it at her. He quickly shoved that idea down his throte and focoused on the task at hand. Setting the rock onnthe ground, he walked a distance away and pointed his wand. Non verbal spells were an option for him. He turned his wand in a clockwise circle thinking of the incsntation and a flick at the end visuallizing the rock cracking.
//LAH-beh-FACK-toom//
He frowned as nothing happened.

Breaking rocks? He got how it worked.. While he didn't very much understand how this would help him preform this on a Troll in the wild (Though he knew very well why they couldn't practice on trolls. That would be cruel.) Rocks were very durable things so it was a good sense of how powerful this Hex is.

Oliver grabbed a rock, nothing bigger than the palm of his hand. He stepped forward a few feet and placed the rock a few feet from where he and Katy stood. He took his spot back next to her and brandished his wand. This was usually the part of classes he was better at. Doing is where he excelled, not keeping his nose in a book.

Simultaneously he started the motion and incantation. "LAH-beh-FACK-toom" It was calm, but determined, he wanted to test the waters of this Hex, see how much determination was really needed.. If there was anything Oliver had in scores it was that.

The rock cracked a bit, not much but it was noticeable.. Nothing special or significant. So maybe he needed to try harder.

Trolls...trolls…trolls.

It wasn’t like she hadn’t heard about the large, often ugly, but not-too-smart creatures. And the fact that there were technically three different types of trolls…forest, mountain and river. But the absolute details had been at least half new information to her so Cassie was paying strict attention to the professor and jotting down notes rather than venturing forth potentially worthless information or duplicating on what she knew. The use of magic, however rudimentary, was something to be concerned about, especially should she ever come to be dealing with one. The Ravenclaw figured if it was just bulk and no smarts it would be easier.

As for spells, she thought of a few. Stunning charms, freezing charms and assorted others. Cass doubted any spells meant to throw an opponent would be worth the attempt since extra effort would likely be needed to move the extra height and weight a troll possessed. Oooo!!! Daydream spell was certainly an intriguing idea to use on them. As well as icing the ground to make them slip and fall, the latter an idea Professor Hirsch supported, especially when mentioning that it was better to effect a troll’s environment than to try and get past their built in magical defenses. And then there was the spell they were to learn today.

A bludgeoning spell.

Cassie copied down the information on the spell, Labefactum, into her notes as well. A fourth year level spell…now she should be able to handle that. With ten minutes to try her hand at it on a rock. At least she needn’t try it non-verbally like the older students. There were very few spells that she had attempted to cast so quietly. The fifth year did as instructed, taking her wand out and moving to one of the rocks scattered around to claim it. “Labefactum!” she tried out with just the incantation at first before switching to just the wand movement to practice that. And then finally adding them both together to attempt the spell for real. “Labefactum!” she pronounced, a clockwise movement around the rock followed by a flick towards it.

Professor Hirsch Best Friend said that her answer was GREAT! The Gryffindor kept her HUGE smile in place, happy to notice that he was still smiling back at her too. It was a secret code all best friends forever had, she was sure.

There were a lot of words following everyone’s answers and Zoryn was only able to retain a good 23% of it all. But the important thing was that her strategy would work, so if she ever came face to face with a troll, hopefully she wouldn’t have to remember anything else Professor H talked about. Not that she wasn’t paying attention, she was!!! Buuuuuuuuuuut it was just so hard to remember everything. That and she was very easily distracted.

Impact spell?????

OOOOOOOOOH. That sounded like FUN.

Zoryn’s eyes were immediately drawn to the front of the classroom where her Professor had words appear before them. She quickly scanned through all the letters, letting her eyes stop at “fourth year spell”. Now uh, this is awkward. Of course she wouldn’t let that stop her from trying, but the Gryffindor already knew that her chances of getting it right were very slim. Especially since she wasn’t the best with magic in the first place. Being a witch was hard.

Jumping up from the ground, Zoryn walked over to the rocks and picked a NICE, HUNKY tiny one. Ahem.

And of course she needed to practice a couple of times before trying the real thing. Right. Yadda yada yaaaaaaa. Zoryn didn’t care much for practice. “LAH-beh-FACK-toom,” what a funny incantation it was. “Labefactum!” Alright, that was definitely enough. She was starting to grow impatient.

Now with her tiny-little-baby rock position in front of her, Zoryn moved her wand around it in a circle and gave it a nice flick while coupling the motion with the incantation itself, “Labefactum!”

ANNNNNNNNNND….

Nothing.

Ugh.

Jonas was doing well with his spells. He managed to get two cracks in his rock he was using. He then noticed a certain Gryfendor who was having a difficult time. He turned and walked up to Zoryn
"Need any help?" He asked her with an amused smile on his face at her struggle. He wasn't really smiling for vengeance persay, just you know...actually, he didn't know.

The Gryffindor shot Professor Hirsch a small smile when he seemed to like her answer okay. Her smile was super doubly short-lived though, 'cause then he started talking a LOT. Annd even though fighting trolls was pretty interesting, it was still way too many words for Emmeline to actually, y'know, pay attention to all of them. She glanced over at Derf and then turned to Stasya to see if either of her best friends was having any better luck when the professor made stuff appear on the board! Thank Merlin for professors who did stuff like that. She had managed to catch the "invisible hand punching a target" thing too, so she at least sort of knew what they were doing. She had to admit that a spell that could punch bullies things for a wizard was pretty super cool. They learned the beesst spells in DADA! Except for when they learned the best ones in Charms. Or that dagger thing in Transfiguration. But this spell was definitely going to be up there with alll her favorite new spells, for sure.

Except that, as she scanned the spell's information on the board, her brain skidded to a halt at the words "fourth year spell." Oh no! It wasn't likely that this spell would work for her at ALL then, 'cause it always took her ages to learn spells. Even the ones on the first years list for dueling club; they took loads and loads of practice to get right. Still, she wasn't just going to give up without a fight.

Emmeline trudged up to the front of the room and looked through the rocks for AGES until she found the teeny, tiniest rock of the lot. Or she thought it was anyway. She tried to shove away thoughts about...other stuff as she headed back to her spot and deposited the big pebble fun-sized rock on the floor and took a few steps back.

She always practiced wand movements first, so Emmeline made a few lazy clockwise circle motions around the rock with a short flick at the end. Good enough. Next, she stared at the board and sounded out, "LAH-beh-FACK-toom" like THREE whole times. Okay, she was ready to smash the rock to pieces now, yup!

The first year gave her rock a death stare for about 30 seconds just to kind of get in the smashing mindset. She performed the wand movement and muttered, "Labefactum!" AND nothing happened as usual. Five tries later, still nothing had happened at all.

Emmeline frowned and glared at the rock. The board said more determination was better, but she REALLY wanted to break it for being so ughh and it hadn't happened yet. Which was making her frustrated and slightly bored and her thoughts wander to later today. Later today was NOT a good thing to think about in lessons, but she couldn't really help it. In fact, thoughts of later were making her more and more mad, 'cause she already knew Professor Stewart was going into an ugly court thing because of her, and it was so unfair they even had to convince some stupid Mr. Judge to do the right thing in the first place! She thought of her parents' likely -- and then less likely, but totally possible -- reactions to this thing later, and her chest practically swole up super big with anger and she just wanted to --

Smash things. The Gryffindor pictured the rock as her father's stupid face in a scary expression, advancing on Professor Stewart with his wand outstretched and, before she'd even decided to do it, her wand was making the right movement and she screamed: "LABEFACTUM!"

The pebble-rock exploded! Tiny pieces of it scattered across the classroom floor, and Emmeline was breathing EXTRA, extra heavily and feeling like she'd run a LOT. Like up a hill or something, or from the grounds allll the way to Gryffindor Tower. Her heart was hammering in her chest, and she was shaking a little, especially her wand hand. She wished someone would invent a spell or something to go forward in time, and kind of dropped to the floor to just sort of sit there and calm down. She was still way too mad and sad and scared of a pretend situation, and Professor Stewart had even told her it wouldn't go down like that.

At least she'd blown up the rock?

SilverTiger 07-18-2017 07:09 AM

She hadn’t exactly given any answer as to spells she’d use against a troll, mostly because Stasya honestly wasn’t sure if she’d fight against a troll in the first place. Plus, there had been that mention of hags, which had only made her glance in Derf’s direction. Hags. The thing he’d said had actually been disguised as a professor at some point or another. She wasn’t really clear on the whole story, but it was definitely scary, and she was convinced that if trolls were like hags, she’d be better off just hiding. Or outright running for her life. She knew she was pretty fast, after all. Plus, Derf hadn’t actually reacted to the hag thing which only confused her more. At least she had a Liv close by, so she could snuggle if she wanted. She was pretty sure Professor Hirsch wouldn’t let the older girl do anything too dangerous right now.

Ooh, or she’d get the professor to protect her. It had worked before, so maybe it’d work again. But she also kind of wanted to learn that bubble charm Liv had mentioned, and also the one that the professor had mentioned. As long as they weren’t practicing on trolls. She was staying as far away from trolls as she could, unless she had other people with her.

And now the rocks made sense. She was so tempted to pick the big rock t6hat the professor had been leaning against, just to see if she could manage to damage it, but instead she picked a sort of medium-sized one nearby. Making sure she’d gotten all the notes about the spell written down before she even thought about getting her wand out. She wanted to remember it, even if she’d already decided that Professor Hirsch probably wouldn’t appreciate her using it for dueling. If she managed it at all. “La-beh-FACK-toom,” she said slowly, getting a feel for the spell. Pronunciation was important after all, almost as much as concentration and focus were. “Labefactum.”

The wand movement was kinda hard, just getting the clockwise circle combined with the flick at the end figured out, and she’d practiced that probably a few more times than she needed to before attempting the spell for real. “Labefactum!,” she cast, moving her wand in as close to the correct movement as she could, in the direction of her chosen rock. Except, barely anything happened. Maybe the tiniest of cracks, if she got really close to the rock to peer at it, but nothing really big. It was frustrating, but she decided to just go back to practicing the parts again. Maybe if she got the movement better.

RandomRaven 07-18-2017 12:34 PM

Oooh, Professor Hirsch mentioned that her choice about casting a rope-conjuring spell around the feet was the best. Then he explained to the students why stunning spell wouldn't be a best option for defeating the creature. Ava just listened to DADA professor and occasionally took some note (although it's not easy to scribble something while standing, heh.) Then bludgeoning hex was taught, something that according him would be one of the best way to attack on trolls and they're going to practice it.... on the rocks!

The Gryffindor wouldn't be surprised when Professor Hirsch mentioned about sixth and seventh year students should try the spell non-verbally. She had managed to cast some charm in non-verbal way, thanks to Noelle Grace Summers who had patiently coached her. It would be a looooong work so for now, Ava decided to try it by mentioning the incantation first. She decided to face the rock that is as tall as her because she needed the challenge. First, she made a clockwise circular motion around the rock and then flicked it.

"Labefactum!"

First round of trying... Well, it wasn't that bad since a small crack happened. Perhaps Ava needed more determination in order to make a greater impact. Okay, let's just try it again. Taking a deep breath, she repeated the wand movement again--a clockwise circular motion and a flick to the rock, focusing her mind to create a bigger impact and cries the incantation. "Labefactum!" The crack became larger which means she did a pretty good job. Maybe now she should try the spell non-verbally since Ava was quite confident with her verbal spellwork.

Noelle always reminded her about the intent of the spell when she wanted to do non-verbal spell. Ava took a deep breath, focused her mind and intent on making an impact the rock and perform the hex. It seemed like there wasn't a progress on the cracked rock which means she needed to try it harder. Right, second try! She focused more while moving her wand in clockwise circular motion and flicked it on the rock and.... still nothing happened. Goodness, this was more difficult than she had expected. Another try and... still nothing happened.

But Ava would not give up on this. She didn't expect to destroy the rock because 1) her rock was huge and 2) She was aware about her ability since performing the hex verbally only caused a crack on it. So... at least she could produce more crack, that's her aim. She managed her breath and took it deeply, put her intent and focus on 200% mode and determined to crack the rock more and more as she repeated the wand movement--clockwise circular motion and a flick on the rock. She might have grunted a little bit as she perform the bludgeoning hex this time.

And it worked. YAAAAAAAAY!!!! She did manage to produce a wider crack on the rock. Meeeeerlin, this was more exhausting than Ava had predicted and she needed drinking water. Would Professor Hirsch allow her to have a drink?

Vivienne knew that trolls were completely dumb.
Quote:

Trolls are dumb, so confusing them is an exemplary plan of intervention. Even greater is running because trolls aren't really active in the initial position.

A thing to learn is the point that trolls are essentially magic animals and this, combined with their absolute capacity, means that they've made a sensitivity to witchcraft. A compassion that moves through their precious plasma. But that does not imply that they're not influenced by charms collectively. It only indicates that charms are limited on them so you have to use a ton of confidence to make a true charm work.

Stunning spells, for example, won't operate. Charms that are designated on the situation or charms chosen to hit it, by the aid of a large target, are presumably the safest chance.
Today she was learning about impact. Hmm... she could use this to knock her sister out for a couple hours.

Quote:

The Bludgeoning Hex is a charm that creates a force on a designated section so, if you point it perfectly, you could cause enough impact on the troll to knock it out without using a heavy object.
She was going to be practicing it on... rocks? Ouch! She grabbed a small rock, the size of a pebble. She cast the spell on it and the rock cracked!

ChanceCoeur 07-18-2017 12:58 PM

mentions of Emm and Ava

Notes were a must before she did anything. She would be practicing this later on and needed to know everything.

Noelle next went to grab a rock and took her time picking out one. A bigger one. One the size of her palms together. It was a bigger target to work on. Heading back over to Ava, she whispered the spell out loud while placing the rock before her on the ground. She wanted to make sure that she was saying it correctly out loud so when she said it in her head nonverbally, it was the correct way. Once she got it, she pulled her wand out and practiced the wand movement without saying the incantation or thinking it. Easy enough wand movement.

Then she heard an explosion.

Noelle jumped a bit and looked into the direction of where the explosion came from. Miss Emm. She giggled. "Great work Emm!" She said looking at the little bits of rock everywhere.

She glanced over at Ava and saw a huge grin on her face and then looked at her rock which had a definite crack. She grinned wide too. "I knew you could do it wifey!" She had no idea if she'd done it verbally or nonverbally but she was proud nonetheless.

Focusing back on her rock, she pushed the murmurs and sounds of the classroom out of her head. Focus, intent.. Breathing out, she pointed her wand and did the and movement while saying Labefactum in her head. .......

Nothing happened.

Or at least she thought nothing did.
Breathing out again, she squared her shoulders. Doing the wand movement, she said the incantation in her head again.

...
Still nothing that she could see.

Okay rock.......

Rolling her fingers on her wand, she gripped it a little tighter and then breathed in. Doing the wand movement, this time she could feel that little tingling of power as it traveled to her fingertips and to her wand. She grinned, liking the feeling, and then practically screamed the incantation in her head. The rock split open and parts of it crumbled.

WOOO!
It was no explosion like little Miss Emm, but it was enough. She was extremely proud of the explosion Emm did. That was impressive.

post 2 - another rock

Clockwise circular motion around the rock and flick! Kirk repeated the mantra, hoping that somehow he would invoke some magic wordlessly. But nope, there was no sign of the rock doing anything. So now he could repeat the magic words, yeah?

"Labefactum.." Kirk started softly, before repeating the motion with his wand. The rock sat perfectly on his palm when he repeated the incantation, "Labefactum!" Keeping his eyes on the rock after the final flick. He kept his stare and determination, the rock did not break but did manage to shake a bit. Well, better than nothing. He then considered the fact on the rock breaking in his hand, there was a risk on cutting himself with it. So he placed the rock down on the ground.... where it then crumbled.

Kirk blinked a few times.. Did that count? It broke inwardly so.. Nah, maybe one more time. Clearing his throat, he dragged a slightly-larger-sized rock before practicing again.

Erindipity 07-18-2017 03:47 PM

Dora pointed her wand at the small crack she had created. It was not some huge something, but her rock was literally the size of a person... so she still felt a big smug. Yes, this was her forte so she knew she'd knock this out.

Wand still pointed, she closed her eyes, took a deep breath, then opened eyes back up before nonverbally casting at it again.

This time the small crack grew wider still. It was working! And to be honest, Dora had the patience and determination for it. She didn't require an explosion... she did those often enough.

Did anyone want to take the rock near hers? The other big one...

Kimothy 07-18-2017 04:23 PM

Miss Vivi?

Honestly, the fourth year was taken aback. She had gotten so used to calling people as 'Miss' or 'Sir' that when someone else actually addressed to her as such, it sounded so weird and foreign. Vivian blinked, quite unsure of what emotions she felt towards the title, but she beamed at Miss Noelle nevertheless. Though, well... 'Miss Vivi' had a nice ring to it. It seemed classy and all that. Ahem, moving on.

Oh? Time to do the actual spell thing already? Ooooh, and it was a bludgeoning hex! That was so interesting. Vivian tapped her fingers impatiently on the soft floor until Professor Hirsch allowed them ten minutes to practice the spell. First off, the Slytherin started with the hand movement. This was usually the part of the spell that Vivian ignored because they were mostly easy flicks and zigzags, but she took a while to work on the clockwise motion and the flick at the end. She did it a couple of times until she got the hang of it.

Now for the incantation. The spell had more than two syllables, so Vivian was going to practice on this one a little bit. "Labefactum... Labefactum," she said. "LAH-beh-FACK-toom... LAH-beh-FACK-toom... Labefactum." Putting the necessary stress on certain syllables, Vivian whispered the spell to herself a couple of times before being contented enough to move on with mixing both the hand movement and incantation together.

Alright, let's do this! "Labefactum!" Vivian said, with the clockwise circular hand movement, and the flick at the end. Hmm, no effect. She didn't expect herself to get it correctly right away. She had forgotten to focus on the rock in front of her, though, she might've been the reason why her spell work failed her in the first shot. Second try! Putting her attention at the rock, Vivian squinted at the part she wanted the hex to take effect on. "Labefactum!" Followed by the hand movement.

The spell worked a bit. A tiny crack that seemed as if a tiny nail dug itself onto the rock's surface was present on the place she had imagined on her head. But it didn't satisfy the Slytherin. She knew she could do better than that. Focusing more on the part again, Vivian raised her wand. "Labefactum!" Clockwise hand movement, and the flick.

... Heeeeey! Was that a legit crack, about the size of half a pencil? Vivian smiled a litte. Did it really work? Did it?

Hey Ju 07-18-2017 09:06 PM

It was ON. BOOM.

Matt got ready while the professor was still talking. He grounded his feet in a stable position and held his wand up, already pointing it at the largest rock in the room. His left palm was facing forward as he held it above his right arm, ready to protect his face in case any bits of rock came flying at him.

He held this position for a few seconds as the teacher continued giving the instructions, focusing on the rock in front of him and absorbing the information being given. That massive rock was about to EXPLODE. How. Awesome.

Labefactum. Labefactum. The Gryffindor kept repeating the incantation in his head while still listening to the professor. Merlin, the man liked talking. Let him BLOW UP SOME ROCKS alreadeh!

Matt NEARLY went for it when it souded like professor Hirsch had finished the instructions, but he managed to stop himself when the older wizard added something extra for those taking NEWTs that year. Right, okay, could they go already???

YES!!!

"LABEFACTUM!" He exclaimed while firmly flicking his wand after circling it clockwise.

It was like he could almost SEE the force coming out of his wand and going towards the rock. The impact made a very loud noise once it hit the target and Matt was super pleased when a long crack made its way from the top of the rock down right below its middle. Which meant it could take more. "LABEFACTUM!" AAAHHHH KABOOM!

The fifth year cheered, jumping up and punching the air in celebration. What was once a single massive rock was now two - actually three! Mwaha - smaller rocks. "WOOOOOO!!!!" CHAMP!!

At least she'd blown up the rock?

And then this happened.

And Hirsch? Hirsch stood there, eyebrows raised, at the clear sign of extra determination that was displayed here. Was this because of rage? Hormones? Whatever it was, it seemed to have worked and the man was impressed.

Instead of saying all of this, he simply approached her and asked, "Emmeline? Are you okay?"

While the students practised, Hirsch took a moment out of watching each of them to gather up something else for the main activity. A simple box, that had been sitting behind the rocks and out of sight, was brought forward. A box that would be explained when it was the right time.

Which was in three..... two...... one........

The man brought a finger and a thumb up to his lips and let out a low whistle, calling for attention. "Okay! That was a good attempt but there's no use learning a spell without putting it into good practice first." It just wasn't how he planned his lessons. "So, I want everyone to take their rocks and back up against the wall. Clear out the space in the middle entirely." He waited for a minute or two for the students to do just that. There was an odd sort of smile on his face and a jittery feeling of wanting to get things started.

When the space in the middle was clear enough, the Defence Professor raised his wand at the largest rock that had been sitting behind him, on one side of the room. The rock was levitated a few inches off the ground and moved towards the centre of the room where it met the ground again with a soft FLOMP! Another flick of his wand and the purple cloth at the top flew off and landed on the floor by Hirsch's feet, revealing a large picnic basket.

"Now! For the main activity, we're going to put the spell you've learnt to use by rock climbing!" Excited? He certainly was. "I want you all to split up into four teams and pick a side of the rock. At the very top of the rock is a prize: sweet treats, gift cards, coupons for Hogsmeade, you name it. Your aim is to get to the top of the rock before the other teams do."

Pause.

"But, as you might notice, there's a problem. The rock is very smooth and doesn't have any footholds in it. So! I want you to use the Bludgeoning Hex to create footholds in the rock. No other spells can be used, especially not Accio. The only person that doesn't have to cast spells is the person who'll be climbing up the rock. The climber needs to wear a helmet and gloves which can be found in this box by my feet." He gave the box a small nudge with his foot.

"So get into teams, work out who's going to do the climbing and start creating those footholds. Remember: accuracy and control is key here! You don't want to be breaking the entire rock apart." A cheeky smile was flashed towards Emmeline. "And if you fall, the floor should cushion your fall." Not to mention that he'll be watching.

"You have....." He glanced down at his watch, "twenty minutes. Ready? GO!"

OOC: MAIN ACTIVITY TIME!

So the activity stands as thus: get into four groups, pick a side of the rock and pick who's going to be climbing. Spell casters need to use the Bludgeoning Hex OR the Gouging Spell to create the footholds. Climbers need to wear a helmet and gloves and use the footholds to climb to the top and get the basket.

catch up and ready to join a team!

So they were going to splitting rocks? Cool. That didn't sound so difficult, thought Kitty as she went to retrieve a small rock just a little bigger than her hand mirror. Then she took out her wand and thought, Labefactum! Nothing so far. Okay try again. Labefactum! Still nothing. She closed her eyes and thought once more, Labefactum! Opening her eyes, she smiled happily as she noticed a small crack appear down the side of the rock that hadn't been there before. She closed her eyes and thought it again. Labefactum! Opening her eyes, she couldn't tell any difference between the rock this time. But at least she'd gotten it right once.

Kitty listened with increasing excitement (and a little unease) as Hirsch explained the rules of the game they were about to play. It reminded her a lot of some of the other epic games they'd played in this class. But no matter what, she wasn't going to be the one climbing. Her nails had just been painted and she wasn't really that strong.

"I'll join anyone's team," she said loud enough to be heard by people standing around. "Just beware, I can't be your rock climber."

Catch up with Mini Activity first, but anyone want to be on our team? :3

Skylar had been busy note-taking and playing catch up, with underlining certain points of emphasis on the long winded spiel that Hirsch was giving about trolls and the hex they would be learning today. Uh .... uh... why ... how was people done writing already? She glanced up from her notes to find they were moving on to rock climbing?

Setting her quill down, she frowned. She wanted to be the rock climber, but she had yet to practice the spell. Verbally, because she hadn't even considered attempting non-verbals for another year. Not to mention this hex would be fairly difficult given that she was a fourth year and it required enough determination as it was.

Labefactum, Labefactum, she mentally stated, thinking that the pronunciations always sounded better in one's head. That might actually make non-verbals easier, wouldn't it? Jotting that down as a question for Hirsch when the time came, she switched to practicing the wand movement for a moment. Clockwise circular motion with a flick. Not too difficult, Sky decided, figuring it best to now practice the incantation aloud. "Lah beh fact um" Wait, that didn't sound right; the end had a more of a BOOM effect to it. "Lah beh fack TOOM" she said again, carefully enunciating, especially on the last syllable. Made sense, because she wanted there to be a boom impact.

Time to put it to effect. Fetching an averaged sized rock, maybe about the size of a quaffle, Skylar took a deep breath, focusing. "Labehfactum!" she said, careful enunciation, wand encircling the rock clockwise and flicking on it.

Uh, was it beginner's luck? Or just tribute to her skills as a beater? Either way, the rock had a sizable crack in it, right down the middle. Not enough that it broke the rock apart completely, but there was definitely a crack.

Feeling pleased with herself, the fourth year glanced around now for the teams. Huh, four teams? Was that meant to be by houses or did it not matter? Hirsch hadn't exactly specified by houses and usually if it was a house race, well, he'd have said so.... All she knew was that she kind of really wanted to climb the rock. And fall, on purpose, for the thrill of it. Also, how did cracks create footholds? Maybe she should just start working on a particular side ...

catching up and joining Kitty

It was slightly disappointing to Henry to know that stunning spells would not work against trolls. He thought of it as an instinctive kind of spell to get out of serious danger, and it worked for him in that sort of situation before, even if it wasn't against any trolls and it didn't work perfectly. What was important was that he escaped safely.

He had thought if he was ever in that situation that he'd use some sort of spell like that and then get the heck out of there, but this new spell that Hirsch was teaching them sounded awfully cool. Henry wasn't sure there would be any reason to use anything so destructive in dueling or in his everyday life that he'd find a whole lot of use for it, but he was eager to learn this spell. Maybe there would be some sort of situation one day where he'd have to break up large rocks - because he wasn't exactly eager to face a troll.

And today he would do just that as he practiced and learned this spell. He was a NEWT student, of course, so he would try it non-verbally too like Professor Hirsch suggested, though he was still working on those and had some measure of difficulty. But before he did anything else, Henry practiced the wand movement a few times and also repeated the incantation in his head before speaking it aloud. Once he figured he had a pretty good handle on both, he wandered over to the rock pile and selected several fist-sized rocks, carrying them in his arm as he found an empty part of the room to begin practicing.

Verbally, Henry had little trouble making cracks in the rocks. It was definitely a cool spell and it seemed to work better the more he tried it. But then to try it non-verbally as well. Henry had just started to focus when Hirsch's voice brought him out of his concentration. Oh, moving on already? He dropped his rocks back into the pile and headed over to the far wall.

But what he said next had the prefect really excited. Rock climbing? "Oh sweet!" Oops, he hadn't meant to blurt that out quite so loudly, but he was excited, okay? He had actually hoped that when he walked in and saw the larger rocks, but he wasn't even sure that was a possibility.

Okay.. groups? Henry felt like he could work well with almost anyone so it didn't matter too much who he worked with. But when he heard Kitty's words, he thought that might be a good choice because he really wanted to be the one who climbed. "Do you want to work together?" he asked his fellow prefect, looking in her direction. "I really want to be the climber," he added with a grin. So that would work out well since she didn't.

Katy didn't feel like milling around and waiting for teams to join, not when it was a CONTEST. And she didn't want to be in that bigoted Ravenclaw prefect's group... so. Skylar. Fellow Slytherin, although a year younger.

"How about you climb, since you're smaller and I didn't wear the shoes for it?" Katy waved her wand at the rock face in front of them, taking in the smooth surface. "I'll start blasting footholds... probably no need to go lower than two feet from the ground, since you can lift your legs that high. Go on, then. Get your helmet."

Was it time for the Slytherins to unite? Snake power and all that? Hmm. Oliver was clearly teaming up with Katy and Skylar. He'd have volunteered to climb but Katy seemed to have quickly delegated that job to Skylar sooo he would help make footholds.

It was probably better this way, they were older and more experienced with magic.. Well, he assumed so but assumptions about people's abilities were often dangerous. Not the point, Lupin. His thoughts often ran off without him.

"So we make the footholds, do we make them while she gears up? Seems dangerous to make them while she's climbing?" He asked Katy but of course if Skylar had ideas he wanted to hear them since she was the one doing the climbing.

*tags Noelle and anyone else is welcome ^__^* #teamLioness (so far)

"Thanks, babe." She grinned as Noelle complimented her spellwork. That girl had taught her how to do spells non-verbally so obviously she was glad to see her could succeed the spell. Ava was determined to do more non-verbal practice but then Professor Hirsch announced that it was time for the main activity.

A rock climbing? Merlin, this was sooooo interesting!

"We have to be a team!" She beamed and claimed the Gryffindor prefect to join her by wrapping her arms around her. Everyone else would welcome to be on their team, obviously. Unless a certain someone who didn't want to even though they were on the same house, ahem. "Do you want to climb the rock or shall I?" Deep down, Ava really wanted to be the climber because rock-climbing was on her bucket list but she offered her partner first.

Just as Zoryn went to try again, she noticed Jonas approaching her... With an offer to help and WAS HE GRINNING? Zoryn gave him a frown. "I'm plenty capable, Jonas," did he think she couldn't do it on her own?!? Zoryn was VERY embarrassed. She crossed her arms and shook her head. "So thanks, but no thanks." She wanted to do it all by herself.

And with that she picked her tiny rock up and moved it to another corner of the room far away from Jonas Emery.

Her tiny rock still had zero dents in it and Zoryn was very unhappy. "Labefactum!" she tried again, taking note that NOTHING HAPPENED (x3). This was SO not fair. Zoryn could NEVER get spells to work right in class. It was like she was cursed or something!!! Or maybe it's because focusing on doing one thing was not her strong suit and therefore she never got spells to work properly. But it was probably the former because YEAH!!!!!

She tried a couple more times, "Labefactum!!" AND again "Labefactum!!!" Before lowering her wand to hear the newest set of instructions. Well, it was time for the practical portion of the lesson and Zoryn made 0 dents in her little rock.

So before moving to group up, she quickly took another rock from the pile and began smashing it against her own. La la la nothing to see here.... Just making a couple of dents the old fashion way. La la la la la. This definitely wasn't cheating. La La La La. Just using her resources. The second year took a step back, considering her rock carefully. Hmmm. It kind of look dinged up? Sort of. Meh. Whatever.

OH NO SHE NEEDED A GROUP!!!! Like a deer in headlights, she looked around the room at the groups that had already formed. There was Skylar and some other snakes... But Zoryn would rather do anything than be on a team with that meanie-pants. Then there were the two badge-heads and... Zoryn didn't know either of them. BUT OH LOOK! Noelle!!!!!!

Yes. Perfect.

Zoryn ran to THAT team. "Hi, Noelle!" And the other girl (Ava) Could she join? Because Zor wasn't taking no for an answer. The Second year would be a GREAT addition. She climbed on things ALL the time / alternatively, she could point her wand and shout the spell too!!! As for actually making the foot-holes... That was definitely not happening. But she was happy to pretend???

conflicted!baby!Lioness...Anyone want to claim a Stas?

Still trying to decide if that teeny tiny crack in her chosen rock was in fact caused by her spell, Stasya had thankfully avoided most of the chaos caused by Emmeline exploding her own rock. In fact, she’d only noticed it when she’d looked over to check on her best friend and saw the bits and pieces of rock, and her eyes had widened noticeably. Now she felt like her baby crack wasn’t anything at all, and it was kind of frustrating. She really had wanted to do good with the spell, wanted to prove she could cast it right. But, before she could raise her wand to try again, Professor Hirsch had spoken again and announced the lesson was moving on.

She’d moved herself and her rock over to the edge of the classroom, frowning at it and the lack of real evidence that she’d cast the spell on it. The purple cloth falling at the professor’s feet had caught her attention though. Between the explanation of the activity and looking up at the top of the big rock, she’d found out what had been up there. It was one question answered, but she still felt like she’d failed at the spell. Because of that, she’d hung back when people started making teams, not really seeing how she could contribute when she hadn’t managed real damage to her littler rock. Plus, she was massively conflicted. Part of her wanted to be on a team with Emmeline and Derf and everyone, but another part of her thought maybe it’d be better to join a team with older students. Even then, though, she couldn’t pick. There was Henry on one side, but Noelle and Ava and her house on the other.

And also, she just kind of wanted to be like Dobby and scamper up the rock.

2111jen 07-19-2017 06:53 AM

Jonas sighed and rolled his eyes. She was such a child. He shook his head and went over to find a team. Seeing nobody, he went to Zoryn's team.
"It seems to me we are going to have to at least tolerate eachother." He said. "Okay. Let me rephrase that. You have yo tolerate me."

Claiming the conflicted!baby!Lioness ^_^

Noelle rubbed her cracked rock in her hands and looked up when the professor whistled like that. Oh hello Hirsch. Now they were going to be rock climbing?? How awesome was that??

Noelle moved to the outskirts like the professor asked. They were to get into teams and she didn't even have to say anything when Ava was grabbing her. Yep, she'd been claimed. She giggled. "Okay okay. L-" She didn't get the words out before Zoryn or Little Z was coming over. "Hey Z! Wanna be on our team??" She asked wiggling in Ava's arms since she was still grabbed.

Then out of the corner of her eye, she saw the face of a particular lioness. Stasya. "Hey, Stasya, wanna join us??" She asked. She figured her being the smaller of the bunch, she could scurry up the rock while the rest of them made rock holes for them.

And Jonas was joining their team as well! He didn't look exactly thrilled about it either.

"I have a plan. Z, how good at you at this spell?? Ava, Z, Jonas, and I can make the holes. Ava.. you can do the left foot holes, Z, you can do the right foot holes. I can do her right hand holes. Jonas, you can do her left hand holes. What do you all think? " Noelle was competitive so they needed to start something and get up that rock!

RandomRaven 07-19-2017 01:43 PM

Zoryn, Jonas, Noelle and mention of Stasya ^____^ still #teamLioness I guess?

She knew that Noelle would not refuse to join her in a team together because they always stick together! "Okay! So...." Then Ava noticed Zoryn Spinnet wanted to join them which she didn't mind at all. The more the merrier, right? Hehe. "Welcome to the team, Zoryn." She welcomed the young lioness and that made them all Gryffindor female team.

#teamLioness.

Or maybe she should change the name since there was a Slytherin young boy joining them. Huh, that was weird. Ava had no idea why on earth he joined them but well... Professor had stated that there's no particular criteria about the team so... Why not. "Okay, but you have to follow our rules. No exception." The Gryffindor said to him. Sorry not sorry if she became a little bit bossy here, but she (and two of others) were Gryffindors so what did he expect?

Noelle then asked Stasya to be on their team. Okay, so she thought that there were enough people. Then the Gryffindor prefect spoke up about their plan and Ava nodded slightly on her words because it's not really a bad idea. "But we still haven't decided who's going up there." She glanced at Zoryn and Stasya. Well, considering how dangerous it is perhaps it would be better if neither of them should climb even though the floor was squishy. "I think it should be either you or I to be the climber." She didn't really trust the Slytherin guy to be honest so Ava didn't really suggest him to go up there.

Also, if the climber was down could they cast Aresto Momentum?

Team Snakey! :3

Obviously, when it came to group activities, Vivian had an automatic friend she wanted to work with. She wouldn't mind partnering up with others, of course, but since they were given the freedom to choose, she just went for the obvious choice. Standing up and sort of bouncing on the cushioned floor, the blonde went over to join Sky, who was with a group of older Slytherins she had seen in their common room before. She didn't personally know them, though, but she didn't mind working with her fellow house mates.

Vivian beamed at the three of them. "Hi, guys! May I join, too?" She asked. Perhaps they didn't mind, but she assumed they'd allow her to join because... duh. Besides, Vivian wouldn't have went anywhere else since Sky was in their group. Kind of like a get one, take the another thing.

And well, she didn't mind climbing up the rock. In fact, she would have LOVED too. The tiny Gryffindor side of her just wanted to get out there and do her thing. As for the falling, Vivian didn't mind. After all, the floor was comfortable and she'd probably just giggle the ache on her back away if it ever happened.

Then Henry joined her team as the rock climber, which was great. "Welcome aboard," she said with a smile to the Hufflepuff prefect as he joined her. "Sure, you can be the rock climber." Seeing as he was the first one to join her team and she most certainly wasn't a rock climber.

She looked around at the other teams. "Would you like to pick a name for our team? The others are naming themselves after house mascots, so..." Lion and Sneak team already existed; that left Badger and Raven (if they were going to do this) which were their two houses. "I don't mind if you want to call us Team Badger."

As she talked she looked around to see if anyone else would their team.

Skylar was honestly a bit surprised when Katy approached her as part of her group, but nonetheless here she was along with another Slytherin from her year, Oliver. And they were suggesting that she be the climber, not that she minded except that she had half wanted to purposefully fall but now with the two fifth years in the group she had the sense they would be disappointed if she fell on purpose and caused them to lose. Maybe she could jump down when she got to the top; it wasn't that high and the floor was cushioned....

Didn't bring the shoes for it? Glancing down at her sneakers, she smiled, "Sure, sure, I can climb." And as she was going over to get her helmet and glove she heard a voice of a familiar friend and turned to see Vivian by Katy and Oliver.

"She's with me," so yes, Vivi, you may join the group, but apparently she'd already been voted to climb though you could be our backup if we did lose our footing or didn't have a hole close enough to grab onto.

Gloves. Check. Helmet. Check.

"Let's make sure they're not too far away," cause her wingspan wasn't that wide yet for her five foot one self.

Was she meant to help make a crack in the rock while she was waiting? "Labehfactum," she said at a point around the highest she could reach from the ground. The first hand hold.

post 3 - finishing rock stuff and joining a team(?)

Clockwise circular motion around the rock and flick! Kirk repeated the mantra. It was all in the wrist as he figured out. Seeing the firstie girl nearly keel over exploding a tiny pebble did get his attention, after he saw one of the bits flew past him.. Okay. He thought, seeing as she was already being taken care of.

Back to the rock, Kirk sealed off the room's distractions to focus on it. Break the rock.. You are one rock.. Now be less than one..He then repeated the clockwise circular motion around the rock and flick! "Labefactum!" He could feel a slight warmth before as the rock shook a bit, keeping his concentration cracks finally began to form before part of it broke off one by one... before sighing. That wasn't so bad, not as explosive but it did the job.. Oh groups.. okay, cool.

Well, it looked like the snakes were forming up and oh.. he knew just who. Remembering his prefect's idea, he decided to go with the two prefects. Dusting himself off after getting up he walked over to the two older ones talking. Team Badgers? "Hey, how about Team Avengers? Has parts of 'Ravens' and 'Badgers' in the name." Spelling-wise of course. Oh wait, duh he should ask before barging in, "Is it cool if I join?" He could do whatever's needed. Climb, charm, help from below, whatever.

She welcomed the young lioness and that made them all Gryffindor female team.

Jonas looked around and bit his lip. There was too much going on at once. Too many instructions.
"Okay, who was doing what now? I'm supposed to be the one making footholds right?" He asked dumbly blushing.

Another younger Snake joined them. "Of course, the more the merrier!" It was a group challenge and how could they go wrong with Snake Power? "Labehfactum!" He started to make footholds on the way up the rock.

Even trying wordless magic also but it wasn't he speciality. It needed more work clearly so he went back to saying the incantation.

Team Avengers!

"Alright, that'd be awesome," Henry grinned at Kitty as she agreed that he could be the climber of their group. But of course they would probably need a few more people to be a proper group.

Team Badger sounded okay to him, he supposed, and he was about to say something about it when another Ravenclaw came over to join them. "Oh.. yeah, that's a cool name." Henry nodded to Kirk first then to Kitty to see what she thought of it. But as far as he was concerned, they were Team Avengers.

"Of course. Join us." The more, the merrier is what Henry thought, plus they needed a bunch of people to cast spells for him to climb. "Are you any good at the spell? I'm going to climb, if you don't mind." He had already established that with Kitty. And they'd probably get started soon so he went over to the box and gloves and a helmet for himself while hopefully Kirk and Kitty were talking strategy.

….. OF COURSE HE (Jonas) FOLLOWED HER. Geez. Didn’t he understand that Zoryn was still holding a grudge, thank you very much!!! Hmph. “Um yeah, okay, whatever,” she rolled her eyes, turning her attention right back to her Prefect.

“Mhm,” she nodded LOADS. Zoryn definitely wanted to be on her team. The girl was basically a DADA GENIUS!!! There was no way they’d lose the competition now!!! Well, except for the fact that Noelle’s plan involved Zoryn taking on a lot of responsibility… But when Noelle asked her about how well she could do the spell, the little Gryffindor was too embarrassed to admit that she couldn’t do it at all. “I’m like, really good at it,” so she lied instead. Naturally. But it wasn’t lying per say…. She was just gonna ACT like she was really good at it. And acting wasn’t lying. It was talent.

The second year grinned at Ava and listened as she spoke. But her attention was quickly drawn to the boy once again. What nowwwww?

Oh. He just didn’t understand the strategy. Well, this was perfect! “You’re doing right foot holes and left hand holes,” she informed him. So technically he was only responsible for doing the hand holes… And technically Zoryn was responsible for the right foot holes. Buuuuuuuuuuut. Pffffffft. Technicalities.

Catch up and open for a team to grab her!

LAH-beh-FACK-toom.

As per usual, it was the incantation that was giving Sam the most issues, not the intent. She closed her eyes gently and tried to visualise the words and the outcome together, trying to get the rhythm and phonetics right. Labefactum. Labefactum. Labefactum!

Perhaps she should more seriously think about trying non-verbals first.

Regardless, when she re-opened her eyes, she turned her attention to the rock she'd been previously lent against. She made a circular motion around the tip of it with her wand, finishing with a flick. "Labefactum!"

A small fissure had appeared down the length of the stone, and her lips curled upwards. It wasn't a huge break, but it wasn't bad for a first try. And honestly, if she'd thought about wanted a more dramatic breakage, she should have aimed the hex at a weaker bit of rock. Aiming at the centre was always going to be harder, with more pressure required to shatter the rock.

And that snippet of information seemed like it'd be useful in the next activity. They'd only want to focus their attention on the surface of the rock to create foot and handholds, not any deeper. But of course, now she was torn. An adept climber, that was what Sam really wanted to do. She'd been shimmying up and down drainpipes since she'd been knee high to a a billywig. She wouldn't even need all that many footholds to get to the top. A handful, at most. Practice was probably more important though, especially when some of the younger students present would probably struggle with the spell work.

"Who needs an extra person?" she asked, looking between the people already finding groups. "Happy to bludgeon footholds or to climb."

Cassirin 07-20-2017 02:31 AM

Team Snake

A younger girl joined them while Skylar was suiting up, and Katy gave her a nod. Vivi. Well met, young snake. She turned her attention back to Skylar as she returned to them, stepping back in surprise when the girl started blasting at the rock. No, no, no. There needed to be some pattern to this, some structure and form. And Skylar was their climber.

"You focus on climbing, Skylar, or you'll end up getting in our way and we'll take off some toes or something." Not really, but she wanted the girl to be careful. "Vivi, why don't you work on some footholds starting about two feet off the ground. Um... Lupin, you work at the middle, and I'll start right above your spot."

She pointed her wand about mid-way up. "Labehfactum."

NifflerFan 07-20-2017 02:42 AM

anyone want an Emmeline?

Miss Noelle and Professor Hirsch had both seemed to think that blowing up the pebble fun-sized rock was a good thing, but Emmeline wasn't so sure. It took forever to get her breathing under control again, and she felt all light headed and weak. Like when she'd practiced one of the second year dueling spells for ages by accident, except that time the spell never worked. But it was the same exhausted feeling she had now. Plus, she wasn't really sure blowing something up when she'd only meant to crack it and stuff was a good thing. It kinda reminded her of the magic she'd done as a little kid by accident when she was super scared, 'cause she'd blown a vase up like that one time. At least the itty bitty rock pieces wouldn't hurt anyone.

The first year looked up at Professor Hirsch uncertainly when he asked if she was okay. The truth was: no, definitely not. But she was in Gryffindor, so she wasn't gonna say that. Nope. Instead, she flashed him a bright, fake smile and replied in a determinedly calm tone of voice: "Uh huh. Sorry about that, Professor."

Except all this thinking about whether exploding fun sized rocks was good or not had totally distracted Emmeline to the point that everyone else, even Stasya, had already formed teams and were working out how to climb the rock. She stood up on slightly shaky legs and looked around for a team uncertainly.

Jonas grinned at Zoryn's stubborness and lack of willingness to stop holding a grudge.
"Okay team! Let's do this!" He laughed. She told him the instructions. He narrowed his eyes slightly. He knew that that wasn't the actual instructions. But, he shrugged and started with the hand holds. Pointing his wand, he concentrated at the rocks. He half wondered why they didn't use defindo. But he shook his head. He needed to focous.

#teamLioness (plus Jonas) - and mention of Emmeline too <3

At first, her only thought had been wanting to pretend she was a squirrel. It kept Stasya from dwelling on her conflict over how she sort of wanted to be on all the teams. She really did kind of think it was mean that she was being forced to choose, and then there was also the conflict over feeling like she’d failed to successfully cast the spell in the first place. She didn’t see how she could contribute when she pretty much hadn’t been able to make a decent crack in her other rock. Little baby cracks weren’t good foot or hand holds, so maybe she ought to just sit the activity out. She could ask Professor Hirsch if there was something else she could do. She could hang out with Liv…but she really sort of wanted to get to try to climb the rock.

And then she’d heard her name and looked over at Noelle. “Okay,” she said, walking over to where the prefect was, along with Ava, Zoryn and the Slytherin boy she didn’t know. Maybe she should tell her that she’d failed at cracking her other rock. Except then maybe they wouldn’t want her on their team and that was sad to think about. She didn’t like failing at things, and she really didn’t like failing at competition-like things.

Listening to Noelle’s plan, she’d just quietly nodded. That sounded like a good plan, since she figured the prefect and Ava could manage the spell and Zoryn had promised she could too. She didn’t know anything about the Slytherin boy, except he already looked like he was ready to cast the spell too. Maybe that left her to climb, and she knew she could. Even if, now that she thought about it, the rock was awfully big and it kind of reminded her of the tree in the forest Emmeline had fallen off.

Except the floor here was bouncy and she totally trusted that Professor Hirsch wouldn’t let her fall. Maybe. “I can climb. Really,” she tried to say when Ava had doubted it. She could. Even if technically she’d never tried before. “And Professor Hirsch said he has helmets and stuff.” She’d be okay. She was determined. And she had squirrel knowledge and squirrels were really good at climbing.

But there might’ve been a quick glance in Emmeline’s direction too. Maybe she remembered the forest too.
