DADA Lesson One - Zombies, Mummies and Inferi, oh my!
For those attentive enough to the notice the change of location will find themselves wandering out to the grounds instead of the first floor of the castle. For those who missed the change in location, well, luckily for you, there's a sign on the classroom door that tells you where you need to go. Hope you're not fussed with walking back downstairs again.
The new setting of this Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson happens to take place on an empty area of land near the lake. The weather is cold, with ice and snow clinging to every surface in your surrounding area. The only indication that you're going the right way happens to be the sight of a roaring fire and, if you squint, a certain bearded Defence Professor.
At a certain distance from the fire, where you can see the man properly, you start to feel the warmth of the fire itself. Looking around, you can see various logs dotted around the fire, each covered in some form of blanket or cushion. The setting almost seems as though you're about to sit in a campfire and toast marshmallows, rather than a Defence lesson.
Surprised? You might be.
Hirsch, who's dressed in warm clothes, is sitting on one of the logs, looking completely at ease with himself, almost as though this was a regular occurrence. Behind him sits a bunch of large blocks of ice which, if you look closely enough, seem to be surrounded by a hazy pale blue outline. For good reason too: a flood wasn't in the man's plans for this lesson.
Those curious enough could go ahead and try to touch it but be warned: the shield surrounding it likes to ZAP at you, if you do.
So come in, grab a log to sit on and wait for the lesson to start.
OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Class will continue tomorrow (late eveningtime GMT) Hope you have fun! ^^

Yeah, yeah....Olivia was here.
....and not for nothing, but the blonde one was kinda over being outside when it was as cold as this. Sure, she'd had the presence of mind to bundle up and lay down some serious warming charms on herself, but wintry weather made her feel too sluggish to function. And this was DADA. FUNCTIONING WAS NECESSARY. For her favorite subject, failure wasn't an option...
Oh, goodness. A CAMPFIRE!
All but running to snuggle up close to the flames, Liv paid exactly zero attention to anyone already gathered. Save for Mr. Tate. Nicky would just have to deal with being plagued by her presence for the day, because friends just....Well, friends simply had to deal with that sort of thing. That was all. Friends liked being plagued by other friends. Or should have been, yes. In her move to take a seat beside him, the blonde noted her young lions, Emmeline and Stasya. Hello, little loves! They both received waves and some smiles.
...And don't think we didn't see you, Prince Eric. "Professor Hirsch, interesting venue for the day." And equally interesting set up. Hopefully there wouldn't be daggers involved in today's lesson, as there had been in Transfiguration. Olivia did not want to have another embarrassing episode.

The walk was welcome, the cold was always welcome even amidst the bluster that was January. warmth, intense warmth only left Aslan tired and distracted, unable to focus- but the cold would keep her alert and awake and hopefully engaged. Hirsch's lessons were pivotal and Defensive magic was not her strong suit, if she was going to earn herself something better than an acceptable she would have to really try for it.
The ice lined path did not bother, her black boots were specifically equipped to deal with Scotland's weather and a slippery slope, and so without incident, Aslan found herself before a roaring fire with only a vague figure of the Defense professor in sight. She did not speak to her classmates or to Hirsch, she was much too busy trying to decipher today's lesson- a puzzle that wouldn't for long need solving. She crossed her arms under her chest and settled down on a log with a blanket draped over the bark. Eyes focused and alight with the reflection of the flame, she focused her sight on Hirsch.

Shay was rushing. She had intended to leave earlier for Defense Against the Dark Arts class, but it hadn't quite worked out. As she headed for the lake, in the cold.....again, she wondered why. What was the deal with every class being held outdoors in the middle of winter? At least she was dressed warmly, having learned just the right amount of layers to wear, since this was now a thing.
Reaching the "classroom" area, Shay was glad to see that class hadn't started yet. She hurried to join the group, throwing out a greeting on the way. "Hello Professor Hirsch", she said as she passed their leader. Then Shay found the closest empty space and plopped down on the log. She was on time. Not late......nope. On time and ready to go.

Daniel was looking forwards to the DADA lesson, it was a subject that he was starting to enjoy. "Hi Professor." He smiled as he looked at the clock on the wall, he had been afraid of being late, but thankfully the Professor hadn't started yet, he was still getting lost in this massive castle. Maybe he should go ask his Professor how he was supposed to remember where everything was.

Was the castle not safe this year or something? Is that why all her professors had suddenly decided not using their classrooms was of wise interest? Skylar hadn't expected Hirsch though to change the location venue, because well, defense classes were a norm in the first floor classroom which wasn't a terrible walk from the Slytherin Common Room, which meant not having to lug books around for three classes.
Except, when she arrived at the classroom, there was the note informing her of where she needed to go. With just five minutes to sprint down to the grounds, Sky wasted little time, arriving slightly breathless, her cheeks reddened from the brisk walk, which was probably more attributed going from the warm castle to the chilly Scotland outdoors temperatures. Using a well-placed summoning charm to retrieve her winter coat, because she hadn't planned on being outside, she shaved two minutes off her time, as she dropped her bag in front of an empty spot on a log, slipping into her coat.
"Hello Professor," she greeted, taking a seat. Uh yea, just don't ask why she hadn't been wearing her coat before now, although after the walk, she wasn't THAT cold anymore. Was this part of the plan to get them all doing warm-up exercises in the Wintertime?
Also, what was THAT second year gryffindor (Zoryn) doing with a blanket wrapped around her. Weird child.

He approached the site of the lesson to see the weird blocks of ice with the blue glow surrounding them and naturally wanted to touch it but figured maybe it was there to keep people from touching it? "Hello, Professor."
Hirsch did have something special in store. In fact, he was sure that this was going to be a lesson to enjoy, even despite the cold atmosphere.
It wasn't long before the first student arrived and he found himself smiling at the sight of the Slytherin. Good. Sitting here by himself would start to look a little weird. "Hello, Mr Lupin."

Yeah they still hadn't made things right. And by they, she meant HE.
But whatever. Seeing the man she forced a small smile and said, "Professor Hirsch. " Yep. That was the greeting HE got.
FIRE!

Dora chose a log nearest to the fire... and away from the man.
Look at the pretty flames. Hehe.
The next student to arrive earned herself a raised eyebrow look. It wasn't surprising that she didn't particularly like him, but it was surprising that this was caused by him laughing at a comment from her that he'd genuinely found amusing.
In any case, he was glad she hadn't decided to boycott his lessons because of..... that."Hello Dora," he said, giving her a smile in return. A genuine one at that.

Olivia rubbed her hands together before blowing on them once more, noticing her breath was visible as she continued to walk towards the speck of red, orange whisps. Fire.
When she was close enough, she saw Professor Hirsch as well as Oliver and Dora. "Hello Professor Hirsch! I hope that you had a fantastic break," she said to the very attractive Defnese Against the Dark Arts Professor. Yep. She could just stare at him.... whoops. Had she been smiling for too long? Then she turned abruptly to give a wave to both Dora and Oliver. "Hey Oliver! Hey Dora!" she beamed as she began to walk over to take a seat when she noticed a blue haze around the blocks of ice. Interesting. She took a step forward about to touch the object when she pulled her hand away. Something about it... Something made her feel uneasy.
She withdrew her hand and went to take a seat.
Ah, another Gryffindor! And one who was.... staring at him? The looks that followed him around since he started here hadn't gone unnoticed but it still gave him the unsettling feeling that there was something on his face. Something he might have overlooked during his excitement to start this lesson.
No? Good.
Something else that didn't go unnoticed was the way she had been inching towards the blocks of ice before deciding to move away. Shame, he wanted to see if the zapping would work. "Thank you, Miss Holden. It was much needed, that's for sure." Maybe she'd understand somewhat, what with being in her OWL year. "I hope you had some time to relax during all that studying."

Could you imagine if she'd been in the dungeons and walked up just to walk back down???? Merlin's beard!
But yes, she'd eventually seen the message on the door and made her way out onto the grounds. It seemed they'd be having a lot of classes outside this year and the Ravenclaw didn't mind one bit.
She'd bundled herself nice and warm then added the warming charm several times to ensure her breathing remained on track. The crisp, cold air had never played nicely with her asthma and she didn't think it would start today.
Getting closer, Jessa could spot a fire just up ahea--oh no.
She was all for the fires during lessons, given how cold outside tended to be, really, just....fires gave off smoke and smoke happened to not be friends with her asthma either.
Cautiously, she stepped closer, trying to figure if this was real fire like in Divination or magical fire like in Transfiguration. Only took a moment for her breathing to answer the question. Real fire. Right.
Much like she'd done in the last lesson, Jessa cast a quick bubblehead charm on herself before turning to greet her Head of House. "Hello Professor." She moved closer to the large chunks of ice. "Not sure I'll be able to guess this lesson based on the props today."
The next student to arrive earned herself a wide, dimpled smile. While he hoped that most of the students would like this lesson, he was pretty confident that this Ravenclaw would be particularly interested in it. So, it was a good thing she had turned up today. "Hello, Jessa," he said, glancing between her and the blocks of ice. There was a small, mischievous smile on his face at her next words. "And where would the fun be in that? Surely, you like the challenge?"
And no, the bubblehead charm hadn't gone unnoticed either. "Are you okay?"

Defense Against the Dark Arts was one of her favorites. Not one she was any good at, but it was fun even when she failed. 'Cause she always tried to pay attention. That was the difference between DADA and everything else. If Zoryn fell asleep in HoM, the worst that could happen was a detention. If she fell asleep in DADA, then she might be eaten. Which... was a little worse than detention. Sort of. Would Professor Hirsch let them get eaten?
Hm.
Debatable.
Either way, Zoryn's mind didn't linger for much longer as she scanned the area and noticed all the nice things their Professor had set out for them. "!!!!!!!!! Are we gonna get to fight dragons today?????" she bounced. Zoryn had been waiting for that lesson. 'Cause that's definitely something taught in DADA, right? She wouldn't know. Never opened the textbook. Ahem.
The second year quickly made her way to a log and took the blanket right off of it, wrapping herself up burrito style and then sat down. HA BURRRRRito style!!?!?! GET IT!?!?!? 'Cause it was so cold?!?!?!
AHAHAHHAHAHA. She cracked herself up!
...... Now, where were the marshmallows when you needed them?
Fighting dragons?!
Hirsch let out a small bark of laughter before shaking his head at the young Gryffindor. Really, these guesses were amusing. "Not today, Miss Spinnet, no. Maybe one day you'll get the chance." Who was going to tell her that dragons weren't part of the Defence curriculum? Because it sure wasn't going to be Hirsch.
And did she need some warming charms?

"Hello Professor." The fourth year curtsied, a polite smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She still wasn't entirely over what had happened with the healer and the fake out that left Abey out of sorts, but she was trying to be mature about the whole thing, particularly because defense was one of her favorite subjects...and it had been ages ago. It was just-well, when it came to people who'd hurt her family in some way, holding grudges was the easiest thing in the world.
Taking up a log by Oliver, the brunette set her hands in her lap and waited for class to begin.
The sight of Miss Botros entering the scene made Hirsch wonder about Mr Abey Botros. Sure, the Healer Seminar had taken place a while ago but there was still a lingering worry over the well-being of the young Gryffindor.
At the moment, however, he was glad that the Slytherin hadn't decided to go against him entirely because of the event. She did have a lot of potential in his subject. "Hello, Junia," he said, giving her a smile and a nod of his head.

She really wasn't built for extreme weather, but more and more the professors were scheduling lessons outside in the cold. Already she'd gotten TWO colds this year, and they only went away when she'd gone to the hospital wing. Now she felt a third one coming on, and this ice treck to the lake was NOT helping.
Squinting through the GHASTLY weather, the prefect caught sight of a fire and the professor. She made her over there a quickly as possible.
"Hello professor. It's REALLY cold, isn't it?" She moved to sit down on one of the logs and hoped that the fire would warm her quickly.
............
Was that a hint at her opinion about the venue for this lesson? Because if so, Hirsch was very much amused. It was cold, she was right, but this is why heating charms existed. Or did she have a personal vendetta against the cold? "Hello, Kitty. You're right, it is cold, isn't it?" he said in a very casual tone of voice, "Do you need some extra heating charms to warm you up?"

Not really. But at least she hadn’t had too far of a walk to get to the DADA lesson, seeing as once again she’d been over in the barn visiting Dobby, Albus and all the other creatures. Honestly, she was surprised that by now Professor Wayland hadn’t begun to think she lived out there with how often she visited. But it did make lessons easier, when the professors seemed to like having them outside no matter how cold it was.
Either way, a well-bundled up blonde had made her way toward the big bonfire from the barns, her normal cheerful smile on her face as she had gotten closer to the group of people who had already arrived. “Hi Professor Hirsch!,” she called out, even as she’d pulled her scarf tighter around her neck and face, making her way over to where Jessa was and giving the older girl a grin. The bubblehead charm around the Ravenclaw’s face made her feel better about it all. She definitely didn’t want the smoke hurting her friend. And she’d waved at Dora and Olivia and a few of the others already there too for good measure.
It was nice to see that the students had remembered to bundle up for this lesson. Sure, the presence of the fire and the activity itself would mean that they would feel quite a bit warmer already but he didn't want to be teaching a bunch of frozen pre-pubescent and pubescent teenagers. That wasn't his idea of fun.
A smile spread across his face at the sight of the young Gryffindor. "Hello, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova." Welcome, welcome.

But, she couldn't also help but wonder if Hirsch wasn't going to put them through something incredibly intense.
When she came to the area where the lesson was being held, she paused to look around. The blocks of ice made her even more wary, but she would keep thinking positively. Feeling brave, Althea made her way close enough to speak but far enough away so that she wouldn't embarrass herself (which was still entirely plausible since it was Hirsch.) She did stare (for a moment!!!) before smiling and greeting the man."Hello Professor," she said quickly, and then made her way to sit on a log far, far, far away from him.
Did he have some sort of repelling charm on him?
Because this wasn't the first case of someone moving to sit very far away from him. Not that he was entirely fussed but it would hurt him slightly if that was the case. Unless he stank? .... No. No, definitely not. He hadn't even been boxing shirtless today.
Hoping that this was just a case of being 'too cool for school', Hirsch smiled at the young Hufflepuff. "Hello, Miss Kenning."

Something he was thinking about Mr Erikson was how quiet he tended to be. Quiet but brave, he had to say. No, he hadn't forgotten about the Healer Seminar and all that had happened during that time. As Zae made her way to the classroom, she noticed she wasn't alone. She saw other students made it here too. She shrugged and made her way to her seat.
Zae tilted her head and saw it was a log. Hmmm? That interesting it had a blanket and she felt the cold chill and figured out why. She covered herself up and wrapped herself like the burrito. Now she saw the dreamy professor sitting in front of the class. She beamed and stuttered, "H-h-hey P-p-Professor..." Man could she talk normal for once in her life? After making a fool of herself she looked down and blushed. The ground looked exciting right now. Wait a minute the stuttering could be based on the cold. Yeah let's go with that.
No, Hirsch didn't know the reason behind the stuttering but was going to peg it down to the cold. Maybe she hadn't mastered heating charms just yet and so, the cold was bothering her more than it did to some of the others. Or she came from a place that was always sunny and warm and wasn't used to the Scottish weather just yet.
Really, there were a number of reasons but that was sticking out to him the most and was the reason why he said what he said. "Hello, Miss Carraro. Do you need some extra heating charms?"

"Hello, Professor," she greeted her Head of House with smile. "'ope yeh packed some marshmallows!" Because that was totally what this lesson needed, yep. She was sure others would agree. She smiled at Junia and Jessa as she went past, before giving a light chuckle at her Prefect's complaint. "It's not that bad." She'd been out in worse, in far fewer layers.
And there was a Dora. "Knut for your thoughts?" Or was she practicing pyromancy?
Marshmallows? For some reason, that made the Defence professor smile in an amused way. "If only. They seem like the perfect treat for this setting." Though, how anyone was going to pay attention and defend themselves when they were so focused on food was beyond him.
Constant vigilance, remember?

"Professor H." She nodded politely as soon as she approached the area, eyes glancing curiously arond the makeshift classroom he had set up before returning. He probably wouldn't even remember her behaviour during the first task but she was still a little bit embarrassed by it. Not of what she had done but how she had allowed her feelings to give way to what some would call disrespect towards the staff. Not that she had meant it but intentions really weren't everything. She'd swing by his office one of these days. For the time being, instead, she focused on the block of ice, the corner of her lips twitching upwards even as she started making her way towards one of the middle logs. "Do we really need more ice, Sir?" Pointedly, she looked around at the icy, snowed in grounds and grinned widely at man. Nope, they did not.
As she sat down on one of the logs, and despite how much she honestly enjoyed the snow, she couldn't help but to look up at the castle. Remember how Hirsch sometimes let them snuggle up in blankets and pillows? Yeah, that was fun.
"Hello, Miss Carden. Excellent commentary, I have to say." He did remember her behaviour at the event and found that it wasn't at all that surprising. Weren't her and Levi Kenning close? Good friends? Which meant that her behaviour was completely rational and called for, even if it came with a certain level of disrespect towards him and the other members of staff.
Did he care? No.
Her comment about the ice earned her an amused snort from the man. "Didn't expect you to be full of sass so early on in the day." Sass was something he always approved of, just ask Dante Barrington. "But maybe you're right, maybe you're not."

These fires that the professors liked making were a nice touch, but they never completely banished the cold either. Not for the first time, Emmeline wished that she could bring her cruppy to lessons with her so that he could cuddle on her lap. That way they'd both be warmer. As she got closer to the fire, the Gryffindor noticed the weird blue glow on the ice behind the professor; she wondered what was evil or Dark about ice. Anyway..: "Hi, Professor!", she chirped with a smile as she passed their Defence professor.
The first year made her way over to the log that Jessa and Stasya were sitting on. "Hi guys! What d'you think is up with the ice?", she asked as she plopped down next to them. Maybe one of the other girls had a clue as to what they were learning about today. She noticed Jessa's Bubble Head Charm with a sense of relief; she was glad that the real fire and its real smoke wouldn't bother her today.
When were professors going to get tired of holding lessons out in the cold?
Never.
Hirsch tilted his head and cast a curious eye over the young Gryffindor. How many layers was she wearing, exactly? Not that it was any of his business but the extra padding wasn't something that had gone unnoticed. He tried to hide his look of amusement as she neared the scene.
"Hello, Miss Sparkes!" She got a smile as well, one that turned into an amused one when the question about the ice reached his ears. Was he going to butt in and answer? No.

If looks could tell stories, Miss Kramer's one was telling him that she liked the cold almost as much as she liked the idea of facing a Dementor again. It was interesting, really, because there were some who seemed to be dealing well with the cold and others who were just not dealing with it at all. Or refused to.

Hirsch stared at Mr Rockefeller as he approached the scene, looking more like someone about to set out for the Arctic than someone attending an outdoor lesson. Sure, he'd asked for the students to come dressed warmly for this lesson but Simon looked like he was warm enough for five people. Did he feel that cold?!
"Hefro to you too, Mr Rockefeller." How he was going to do the activity, he didn't know.

The blonde naturally skipped her way to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom before she realised... oh. Yeah, she had remembered that it was supposed to be somewhere near the Great Lake. LOL.
Once she reached the lake, Vivian skipped towards the class and flashed her ever so winning Fairfield beam at Hirsch. "Hello, Professor!" She said and then took a seat/log near him. See? Perfect spot.
Ah, so he didn't stink or have a repulsion jinx on him?
Good to know.
Hirsch smiled back at the Slytherin, noting how happy she looked to be here. Was it because of the subject? Or was she just polite? Whatever the reason, at least she wasn't frowning and had, whether she knew it or not, made him feel slightly better by sitting near him. No, he definitely didn't stink.
"Hello, Vivian. Doing well, I hope?" Dimpled!smile.

Ava enthusiastically greeted the man and sat at the log next to Vivian.
And here was another student to reassure him that he didn't, in fact, stink. Or was generally repulsive to the student body. Thank you.
Hirsch smiled at the Gryffindor, feeling quite a bit better about this general seating already. "Hello, Miss Burton." The enthusiasm hadn't gone unnoticed. No no no. Enthusiasm was good, remember?
And if Miss Burton was here, that meant that another Gryffindor wasn't too far behind...

Taking a seat, Noelle eyed the fire with interest and then... ice. Fire and Ice? Hmm.
She was ready.

It wasn't like Noelle Summers to miss one of his lessons and, if she did, he would've been very worried. Remnants of the Christmas break, he supposed, or newly found confidence after facing down and defeating a dementor.
That was never going to get old.
By the time he arrived to the bonfire Professor Hirsch had set up, there were already plenty of students in wait. Sister got a pat on her shoulder, friends received smiles, girlfriend was sent a mischievous grin, Professor Hirsch was granted a nod. Probably ought to have looked at the man before looking at the said girlfriend because the hint of mischief remained in both the boy's dark eyes and smile when he'd turned to the professor, but.
Levi blinked quickly, forcing an impassive expression to make an appearance. Success rate of about ninety-percent. He stuffed his gloved hands inside his pockets, choosing to place himself a safe distance away from all the familiar faces; they would all prove to be distractions, no doubt. "Hello, Professor Hirsch."
And....... eyebrow!raise.
Sure, he was hardly anyone's first person to greet here but that didn't mean that he wasn't surprised at the queue he had to wait in for Levi Kenning's attention and greeting. But then again, it wasn't like Levi Kenning to send him mischievous looks either, was it? So, he sat there, an eyebrow raised at the boy and somewhat of a smirk on his face.
Professors noticed things. But he wasn't going to say anything because he was, as the kids called it, a bro.
Just ask River Reed.
And he had something to tell the Gryffindor as well. "Truly excellent job with the challenge, Mr Kenning. I'm very proud of how well you handled that." Not to mention the patronus! How long had he been hiding that gem?

All but running to snuggle up close to the flames, Liv paid exactly zero attention to anyone already gathered. Save for Mr. Tate.
The enthusiasm to get to a source of heat was something that amused Hirsch a lot. Again, it showed people's preferences when it came to the weather and it seemed as though most would prefer the warmer temperatures as opposed to the rainy, sluggish, constantly cold temperatures of Scotland.
Sorry.
He smiled, though, at Miss Phillips, especially at the comment. Interesting venue? "It is, isn't it? It seemed like the best place to hold today's lesson." There was an odd twinkle in his eye and a mischievous smile on his face. Really, he was excited.

Had it not been for his need to be constantly vigilant and the vague sense that someone else's presence was in the surrounding area, Hirsch would've completely missed the arrival of the seventh year Gryffindor. It probably should've been expected because while the girl always had such intriguing thoughts to her answers and asked very interesting questions in lessons, she was generally a very quiet person. It would be worrying.
As it were, when he noticed her sitting there, Hirsch gave her a small and a nod of his head. Hello, Miss Evans.

Hirsch was vaguely aware that time was ticking down and that he'd have to get this lesson on the road before long but there was still a bit of time left for that. Let them enjoy the fire for a while before the talk started.
And let Miss Morrison get herself down to the campfire.

Just as he was about to stand up and start the lesson, someone else had wandered in. Or, sprinted in. And without a coat too? That was a lot of dedication, in itself.
"Cutting it close, Miss Diggory." Though, if the smile on his face was anything to go by, he wasn't mad. "You're just in time."
When it looked like no one else was coming to the lesson, Hirsch stood up in an attempt to grab everyone's attention. They weren't in a classroom so he couldn't snap the door shut in a dramatic fashion to call the start of the lesson so this would have to do for now.
"Hello and welcome to another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson!" Were they excited? He was. "Firstly, I understand that the change in environment might be throwing you off but I do promise that it's for a good reason. I'm not making you sit out here as some kind of cruel defensive tactic." Pause. "If you feel a little too cold and need some extra warmth, don't hesitate to ask me or an older student to place some heating charms on you." Though, here's hoping that the fire was helping, at least.
"Now!" he said, clapping his hands once, "Before we move onto the main topic of the lesson, I want to pose a hypothetical question at you all." Get them thinking about something other than the cold. "Imagine you need to go to a certain destination - any destination - and, on your journey, you find yourself at a crossroads. Three paths sit in front of you and they each lead to the destination you want to go to."
"But!" Dramatic pause, anyone? "Each have an obstacle blocking your way that you have to defeat to proceed. One has a bandaged Mummy standing there," He drew out his wand and, after moving his wand in an intricate fashion, conjured a holographic image of a mummy. "Another has a Zombie blocking your way," Another intricate wand movement later and there was a holographic picture of a zombie in the air, near the mummy. "And your last obstacle is an Inferi." One last intricate wand movement conjured up the image of an Inferi.
"So my question to you is: which path do you take? If you had to face one of the three creatures, which one would you face and try to defeat? A mummy, a zombie or an inferi? And why?"
This was a long question, wasn't it?
OOC: Awwww you guys <3 *so flattered!* Class has officially started so please keep the chatter to a minimum! And if you haven't posted yet and want to, just pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time!
The question is simple: between a mummy, a zombie and an inferi, which creature would your charrie try and defeat and why? There's no correct/incorrect answer to this, it's just down to personal preference. But we are interested in their reasoning behind their choice.
I have a super long day tomorrow so I'm probably going to post by 9pm GMT+1, if not earlier. Sorry for the wait.
Dora snoted when the man called her by her name and said nothing else. She was so mad at him for a host of reasons now. And something he had done after greeting her just compounded it. Like really, dude. Totally uncool.
Instead of showing out like she WANTED to and leaving the lesson she opted to grudgingly participate. She wasn't one to show favoritism or disrespect either one.
"Inferi. Fire. " Her contribution to the lesson for the day. Inferi were defeated by fire, no?
Something he was thinking about Mr Erikson was how quiet he tended to be. Quiet but brave, he had to say. No, he hadn't forgotten about the Healer Seminar and all that had happened during that time. "Hello, Mr Erikson. I have to say, thank you for what you did during one of the Healer Seminars. That was very brave of you."
An overdue thank you but a thank you nonetheless.
"You're welcome, Professor." Kyle smiled brightly. It was nice to know his efforts had been appreciated. He listened to the professor as the man began the lesson and thought about the choices. He had no idea what to do about a mummy or an Inferi, but a zombie? "I'd choose the zombie, Professor. They're slow, aren't they? And if there's only one of them, it shouldn't be much of a problem. Fire could take it out, couldn't it?"
The question felt.. Wrong, like it was a trick somehow but Aslan couldn't put her finger on exactly why. She leaned back, palms flat on the log beneath her as she considered all that she knew about Inferi, Vampires and.... Mummies.
"Professor." Aslan said, not raising her hand but speaking clearly so the Hirsch could hear her over the others and the roar of the fire. "these are all more or less the same." the Lion had questions, but didn't know where to start." She glanced to Dora Umbridge as the blonde witch abruptly answered, calling for the obvious use of fire on Inferi but offering no further explanation.
"Almost everything can be killed with fire." Aslan impassively said, tucking back a strand of her dark hair and glancing to the flame before them.
"How is a Mummy different from the others? are American Zombies imbued with the soul od their master or is that only folklore- and if they are, can they be considered reanimated corpses, or are they something else?"

Oliver smiled back at the professor and watched as his classmates stepped up to the spot. He waved back at Olivia "Hey" He still owed her a jam session and as Junia popped up she got a friendly nod as well. The snake rubbed his hands together toward the fire and made sure to send a little nod Katy's way, He hoped that if there was a point where people grouped up that his partner in crime would head his way. Once the initial question was asked it was very clear that this lesson had to do with fire.
He thought about the question even though it seemed all the answers were the same. "The path doesn't seem to matter too much, Professor. Fire would be effective against any of the three." It would also smell very terrible. But if the choice was between survival and a bad smell he chose survival.

Skylar hadn't realized she had been cutting it so close to the start of lesson, until Professor Hirsch pointed it out. But she had made it on time, so no foul. She gave him a gracious smile in return as he started the lesson. Of course it was for a good reason; wasn't it always? Or at least that's what her professors tried to tell her.
She wasn't cold though, for right now, but that was probably because of the adrenaline coursing through her veins from the sprint. And then the coat she slipped on after, plus the fire, if anything she was going to be chilled when she got back to the castle.
Hypothetical question ... a destination, Skylar closed her eyes as she pictured the destination and the situation that Hirsch was posing. A zombie, a mummy, and an inferi. All could be defeated by fire, as that seventh year Gryffindor Aslan pointed out and Skylar liked fire. Fire spells; she was good at fire spells. And ice spells, ironically enough. Eyes still closed as she was picturing the situation and listening to her classmates around her, she tried to formulate an answer.
Which path would she take? If she had to face one of the three creatures; key word was if. She didn't have to try to face any of them. Eyes opening, she had her answer in mind. "None, Professor. At least none of three in front of me, but I'm at a crossroads, which meant there's the fourth path of the way I had come from. Which means, i turn around and go back the way I came from in search of a differently traveled road. There's always another path, even if it's not paved." Yes, she was going to make her own path. Which would probably end up encountering different creatures, perhaps even worse than three aforementioned, but at least she was going to do it by not taking the traditional road to get there.

The change in location didn't bother Kirk as much as the weather itself. It had it's perks, hair tended to like the cold more. He had sat on the log after the initial greetings, Hirsch was bound to have something exciting happen today after hearing the first question.
Which creature would Kirk rather face? He sat there for a moment, contemplating. They would all suffer from fire and have a slower mobility reputation... But then again, "I think I'd take the Mummy. Inferi's are controlled by another wizard usually so that'd mean I'd have to face him in the future, right? And Zombies are contagious when they hurt you so I don't want to risk being like them too. So with the Mummy I could just try to freeze or burn it out of my way." Seemed right, right?

Junia listened to the question thoughtfully, deciding that her course of action in that situation would be exactly what Sky had expressed. She'd simply go back the way she came in search of another road. No way would she risk her life. Still, if she had to choose and there was no way out of a confrontation...
"I'd pick the mummy as well. More so because I think facing a corpse that has been all wrapped up would be less frightening and less likely to throw me off. Facing an inferius or a zombie would mean coming face-to-face with a decaying version of the person they once had been, you know? It'd be unsettling." More unsettling than facing a mummy, that's for sure.

What? Nicky nodded a little uncertainly, curious as to if he was exuding discomfort out here. He wasn't as skilled at charmswork as his classmates were, apparently, and the warming spells his mum had placed on his clothing over break had long since worn off.

Professor Hirsch always asked the weirdest but the most interesting and thought-provoking questions. She let that question linger in her mind for a while.. wondering how she would deal with a situation like that. She absently stared at the lake for a few minutes while her classmates came up with a few answers before finally looking at the professor, raising a hand hesitantly.
"A zombie, I think. It would be interesting to take on a challenge of defeating something so.... scary and terrible. The easiest of the three would be the mummy, of course." ... and that was it. She resumed soaking in the warmth of the fire as she waited for class to resume.

Even as she had returned the smile the professor had given her, Stasya had also returned the waves she’d gotten from Dora and Liv. Even if the older students weren’t sitting by her, she wasn’t going to neglect to greet them back. Plus, she’d given Emmeline a grin as her friend had joined her and Jessa. “opposites?,” she offered as a guess as to why there was both the presence of the bonfire as well as the ice. Of course, maybe the fire was just there to keep them all warm since they were outside in the snow, but every other time the fire had been part of the lesson too. She didn’t see why it wouldn’t be this time too, and besides, fire worked against lots of dark creatures even if she didn’t think it worked against curses and stuff like that.
As the lesson began, she’d been listening intently as Professor Hirsch had presented an image to them. Except… “How do all three paths lead to the same place?,” she asked, raising her hand tentatively. If they all split off in different directions, she couldn’t figure out how they’d end up in the same place. Or, why they’d have to pick one path to walk down, which made her raise her hand again.
“All three creatures are dead, and fire works against them,” even if it probably would just scare the zombie and the inferi away. “But why couldn’t we just fly over them?” They were magic after all, and he hadn’t said they didn’t have brooms with them.

He was offering heating charms. "Um...no thank you. I'm already getting warmer. Thank you for asking, though." She actually would have enjoyed a heating charm, but she didn't want to admit that her cold prevented her from casting it on herself. But it didn't matter that much now that the fire was unfreezing her.
And then the lesson was starting. What a creepy question, the Goth thought to herself. "I would pick the mummy, because it's all wrapped up so I can't see his or her face. Mummies are probably just as bad as zombies and Inferi, I wouldn't have to worry about seeing its face. Especially if the mummy used to be someone I knew. That would be cruel."
When she finished answering, she couldn't help but peer nervously around. She knew there was no way they'd be about to face REAL undead (that would be illegal), but this topic was already unnerving her.

Uh, what? Why would she be on this hypothetical path? What kind of HORRIBLE place in the world were they traveling that they'd be inclined to run across an inferi AND a zombie AND a mummy? It sounded like a stupid place to travel.
Katy considered that horrible vacation as she warmed her hands over the fire. All bad options. Finally, she raised her hand. Bad. Options. "Professor, it's all bad either way, I imagine, and I'd turn tail and head back the way I came. But I think I'd prefer the mummy. It seems the most flammable."

Aw man, no dragons today. Zoryn pouted JUST A LITTLE because she was still really excited for what they had in store. There was never a dull moment in DADA. No, sir!
Did it even cross her mind that she could share the blanket? OF COURSE not! Er consideration wasn't really a thing she was any good at. Whoops?
She was, however, paying good attention to everyone as they slowly trickled in to the campfire's radius. Including the highly insulated person who sat next to her on the log. Oh, Simon! AHahaha. This kid gave her LIFE. "Pssssssst," she wiggled closer towards him, still burrito-ed up. "I like your hat, it's silly," that was a compliment btw, Simon.
Still waiting for class to start, she caught the wave from that old Gryffindor girl (Dora) who spoke mermish! Zoryn waved back, JUST as ENTHUSIASTICALLY. If not MORE. Which, by the way, was quite a feat considering the fact that she had tightly wrapped her hands up in her burrito only minutes ago.

Zoryn wiggled her way to face Professor Hirsch as he posed his first question to the class. Zoryn's hand shot up right away, but it felt like she had to wait an ENTIRE CENTURY to give her answer 'cause everyone else was picked to go first. And loads of them had real boring answers too. Who the heck would use fire when you could kick the monsters???? It'd be SO much more satisfying that way.
"I'd choose the mummy too," she explained confidently. "'Cause all you've gotta do is unwrap them and then they're pointless AND naked." MHM. It was ALL TRUE. "'Sides, since their brain is all rotted, it's probably reaaaaaal easy to punch 'em and run away free." It was all science.

Zarina could use some extra heating charms, that would be lovely. Zarina nodded and said, "Yes p-p-pleaseee.." She wasn't used to this cold scottish weather yet. She continued to rub her hands for warmth and breathing her warm hot air onto them. Now onto the next question, Zae listened carefully and thought about it. Who would she face....a mummy, zombie or inferi? Well the inferi would be really scary. Those are dark art skeletons or something like that. Nope not for her.
This slytherin smirked to herself and thought of her idea at last. She raised her hand and contribute, "Well I would face the zombie because you can easily duck from the attacks, you can outrun them, you can even use diffindo to cut off their leg or whatever body part you wish and it would take them a bit to process what you have done. By then you have ran past them and onto your next task." Zombies weren't that scary to Zarina compared to the mummy and inferi.

So far...the professor was living up to Jessa's promises...BUT HE WAS STILL SUSPICIOUS AS A KNEAZLE IN A ROOM FULL OF ROCKING CHAIRS ABOUT THIS SPECIAL EXTRA STUDYING HE WAS HELPING JESSA WITH! IT WAS SHADY. SUPER SHADY. PROFESSOR DARK LORD MYERS WAS WAS CLEARLY NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH A TATTOO IN OMINOUS PLACES.
Come to think of it...Professor Hirsch DID have A LOT of tattoos. It was clearly a means of distracting from THE tattoo.
And yes, the Hufflepuff WAS ignoring history for the sake of his conspiracy theory. So sue the kid.
But he was HERE...just strategically hidden from view of the man's EYES. His intention, as always, was to SURVIVE the lesson and he was kinda disappointed - which actually meant super excited - about the topic. At least it was about THINGS he knew.
Okay but...under what circumstances would he find himself in a place where all three of these creatures were present? Well, save for being in a competition like the Triwizard or this IMPS one that is. Since mummies were native to Egypt...and zombies the southern United States of America and not something a wizard like himself would come across in Britain...but Inferi could be aaaaaanywhere...so really the problem was why would a mummy and zombie be in the same place. And WHY would someone throw them in the same place.
Also...reanimated bodies? Oh yeah....he was ON TO YOU, PROFESSOR! ON. TO. YOU.
Glancing over at Jessa to try and READ her expression, Derf tried his best to focus again on the question. Not that he had any intention of answering aloud. Okay...but hmmm... Since there was a VERY strong likelihood that Derf could run into a mummy while visiting Abey in Egypt...he opted out of that one. Inferi, well, he was just waiting for the day now when one of the secret Dark wizards among Hogwarts staff created one or Jessa so not that one...which left him with a zombie he supposed. Less likely of a chance to interact with one of those given the three choices. It was all about likeliness of exposure for him.
Oh. And with fire. Yes. Or his super speed and run away.

Thanks, lovelies!
Olivia listened to the hypothetical question that Professor Hirsch had posed. What would she rather face: mummy, inferi, or zombie? Inferi were essentially a Dark Wizard's puppet that they could use for their own bidding. Zombies were like inferi but... slightly different? She wasn't too sure what the difference was. And a mummy... Well if the mummy was anything like the mummy portrayed in the Hollywood films, she seriously doubted it would be but that would be an adversary to face. Actually all of them would be hard to face but fire would work on them all.
So Olivia decided to choose an answer different from her classmates. "Though a mummy would be easiest to defeat and fire could perhaps be used to defeat all three, I think I'd prefer to face an inferi. It'd be terrifying but also an exhilarating challenge."
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
Okay so maybe the Professor had a point there. She DID love the challenge and the surprise made it all the more intriguing while she waited. Jessa nodded in response to his question. "I'm fine, just asthma. This helps." Block the smoke and leave her lungs happy. Everyone wins.
She smiled at Emmeline and Stasya as they came to join her by her log and was all set to answer Emmeline's question about the lesson WHEN PROFESSOR HIRSCH WENT AND ASKED A GLORIOUS QUESTION LIKE THAT.
The Ravenclaw leaned forward on her seat, taking very little notice of the way Derf had been looking at her because HOOOOOLLLLLYYYYYY KNEEEEAAAAAZZZLLLLLLLEEEEEE!!!
There was no mistaking the way her face seemed to light up.
"All of them." Her hand had shot up so fast, it was a wonder she didn't pull a muscle or dislocate her shoulder at the joint. "All three. I'd go down each road, then after I've defeated them, I'd go back and take the other road then the other--but I wouldn't use fire. That will destroy the specimens before I get a chance to really learn anything." WHICH WOULD BE NOTHING SHY OF TRAGIC!
"Ideally, I'd like to cross study them under certain conditions. Need 'em alive ....er....undead for that."
That was her answer. She wasn't gonna choose ONE.

Stasya had made a good point; fire and ice were opposites and would totally explain why Professor Hirsch had both out here. She was about to tell her friend that she liked that idea when Miss Olivia P. arrived. Emmeline gave the older lioness a smile and a wave, and then gave Derf the same when he came over, but before she could say anything else about the ice or anything, the lesson had started.
At first, Emmeline was content to listen to her classmates' answers as she thought the problem over. Most of them thought that any of the creatures could be defeated with fire, and Emmeline thought that was probably true -- but then why the ice? Stasya had asked a good question, too; flying away or over the Dark creatures sounded like one of the best strategies to her. Some of her classmates' answers were kind of disturbing, though. Emmeline stared at Miss Olivia H.; battling all three creatures was super brave and all, but unless they were going around hurting people, what was the point in that? Maybe Miss Olivia H. was super good at DADA or a future Auror like Miss Noelle or something. The older Gryffindor's answer went out the window in terms of daring or weird answers, though, when Jessa said hers! Jessa wanted to study them?! WHAT?! Emmeline glanced at Derf and Stasya to gauge their reactions, 'cause she felt like someone should tell Jessa that that was NOT a good idea -- for LOADS of reasons -- but she wasn't sure how to go about telling the Ravenclaw that herself. She knew that Jessa liked experimenting, but experimenting on ANY creature was disturbing, and on Dark ones it was even worse of an idea in the first year's opinion.
So which Dark creature would Emmeline pick? She felt like she didn't know enough about any of them to make a smart choice, to be perfectly honest. She knew what all of the creatures were, of course, but she didn't know speeds or fighting abilities or weaknesses (other than fire) of any of them, really. Someone had said earlier that facing an Inferi would mean facing the Dark wizard who had conjured it, and Emmeline had to agree that that would be much worse than facing only one Dark being. Raising her hand, she said tentatively: "I think I'd take the mummy, Professor. Because you could use loads of different spells to get away from it, maybe, plus fire. The Inferi would mean fighting TWO battles to get past it, and zombies are super dangerous if they bite you, right?" She wasn't sure about that, but she thought maybe zombies spread their zombie-ism through bites, sort of like werewolves did. Mummies seemed like not as much of a threat as the other two options, but maybe she just didn't know enough about any of them. Emmeline flushed with embarrassment and slumped a little on her place on the log; maybe she shouldn't have answered this one.
Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.
Noelle was seated by Olivia. She was ready to go once Hirsch started the lesson. She gave a look around the classroom as everyone started answering whether or not they would like to face a mummy, inferi, or zombie. She listened to the answers. Some thought like her, while others didn't. She grinned though because some/most answers were brilliant. Also Jessa... heh.
Noelle's eyes travelled back to the professor when there was a lull in the conversation. Enough time for her to sneak an answer in. "Like Kirk said, the rumor for zombies, is their bite is contagious. I would rather not become a zombie, so I would leave them alone. And mummy's don't seem to be a threat. I'd go after the inferi. They are controlled by dark magic and another witch or wizard, but I think that would be more of a challenge. " Plus trying to find who was using that dark magic would be fun.
