DADA Lesson One - Zombies, Mummies and Inferi, oh my!

For those attentive enough to the notice the change of location will find themselves wandering out to the grounds instead of the first floor of the castle. For those who missed the change in location, well, luckily for you, there's a sign on the classroom door that tells you where you need to go. Hope you're not fussed with walking back downstairs again.

The new setting of this Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson happens to take place on an empty area of land near the lake. The weather is cold, with ice and snow clinging to every surface in your surrounding area. The only indication that you're going the right way happens to be the sight of a roaring fire and, if you squint, a certain bearded Defence Professor.

At a certain distance from the fire, where you can see the man properly, you start to feel the warmth of the fire itself. Looking around, you can see various logs dotted around the fire, each covered in some form of blanket or cushion. The setting almost seems as though you're about to sit in a campfire and toast marshmallows, rather than a Defence lesson.

Surprised? You might be.

Hirsch, who's dressed in warm clothes, is sitting on one of the logs, looking completely at ease with himself, almost as though this was a regular occurrence. Behind him sits a bunch of large blocks of ice which, if you look closely enough, seem to be surrounded by a hazy pale blue outline. For good reason too: a flood wasn't in the man's plans for this lesson.

Those curious enough could go ahead and try to touch it but be warned: the shield surrounding it likes to ZAP at you, if you do.

So come in, grab a log to sit on and wait for the lesson to start.

class progression:
- Between a mummy, a zombie and an inferi, which creature would you like to face? And why?
- What are the differences between a mummy, a zombie and an inferi?
- Mini Activity: Grab a firesuit and practice the Ring of Fire spell!
- Main Activity: Time to make ice sculptures!
- That's all, folks!

OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Class will continue tomorrow (late eveningtime GMT) Hope you have fun! ^^

Oliver followed the signs out to the DADA lesson. Odd that it wasn't going to be in its usual classroom but he figured Hirsch had something special in store. it was icy and cold as it always was in Scotland this time of year.. As a native of Scotland he didn't hate the cold but couldn't help missing the warmth of other places. Thinking back to Rome over New Years, it was chilly but barely enough for snow.. Wouldn't that be nice?

He approached the site of the lesson to see the weird blocks of ice with the blue glow surrounding them and naturally wanted to touch it but figured maybe it was there to keep people from touching it? "Hello, Professor."

Erindipity 06-12-2017 07:25 PM

Anyone

Dora tugged gently at her scarf as she made her way across the grounds to the lake. It was cold, but she had cast a warming spell on herself before exiting the castle. Only a fool wouldn't. And she was possibly a fool seeing as she was attending The Enemy's class. Hmph.

Yeah they still hadn't made things right. And by they, she meant HE.

But whatever. Seeing the man she forced a small smile and said, "Professor Hirsch. " Yep. That was the greeting HE got.

FIRE!

F I R E.

Dora chose a log nearest to the fire... and away from the man.

Look at the pretty flames. Hehe.

Today's lesson was not going to be inside the classroom. Instead, they were out on the grounds. Olivia slipped on her gloves as she headed down towards where the lesson would be held. She was certainly glad that she had accidentally left her gloves in her pockets so that she could wear them now. Olivia rubbed her hands together before blowing on them once more, noticing her breath was visible as she continued to walk towards the speck of red, orange whisps. Fire.

When she was close enough, she saw Professor Hirsch as well as Oliver and Dora. "Hello Professor Hirsch! I hope that you had a fantastic break," she said to the very attractive Defnese Against the Dark Arts Professor. Yep. She could just stare at him.... whoops. Had she been smiling for too long? Then she turned abruptly to give a wave to both Dora and Oliver. "Hey Oliver! Hey Dora!" she beamed as she began to walk over to take a seat when she noticed a blue haze around the blocks of ice. Interesting. She took a step forward about to touch the object when she pulled her hand away. Something about it... Something made her feel uneasy.

She withdrew her hand and went to take a seat.

DaniDiNardo 06-12-2017 09:46 PM

She hadn't gotten the message. Whoever was meant to deliver the message about a change of venue had obviously skipped lunch and decided to eat the message instead. It didn't REALLY matter for her though, because she'd been up in the towers and simply needed to continue descending the stairs. Could you imagine if she'd been in the dungeons and walked up just to walk back down???? Merlin's beard!

But yes, she'd eventually seen the message on the door and made her way out onto the grounds. It seemed they'd be having a lot of classes outside this year and the Ravenclaw didn't mind one bit.

She'd bundled herself nice and warm then added the warming charm several times to ensure her breathing remained on track. The crisp, cold air had never played nicely with her asthma and she didn't think it would start today.

Getting closer, Jessa could spot a fire just up ahea--oh no.

She was all for the fires during lessons, given how cold outside tended to be, really, just....fires gave off smoke and smoke happened to not be friends with her asthma either.

Cautiously, she stepped closer, trying to figure if this was real fire like in Divination or magical fire like in Transfiguration. Only took a moment for her breathing to answer the question. Real fire. Right.

Much like she'd done in the last lesson, Jessa cast a quick bubblehead charm on herself before turning to greet her Head of House. "Hello Professor." She moved closer to the large chunks of ice. "Not sure I'll be able to guess this lesson based on the props today."

Zoryn was PUMPED and FIST PUMPING to show just how PUMPED she was as she made her way towards the fire, people, and her Professor.

Defense Against the Dark Arts was one of her favorites. Not one she was any good at, but it was fun even when she failed. 'Cause she always tried to pay attention. That was the difference between DADA and everything else. If Zoryn fell asleep in HoM, the worst that could happen was a detention. If she fell asleep in DADA, then she might be eaten. Which... was a little worse than detention. Sort of. Would Professor Hirsch let them get eaten?

Hm.

Debatable.

Either way, Zoryn's mind didn't linger for much longer as she scanned the area and noticed all the nice things their Professor had set out for them. "!!!!!!!!! Are we gonna get to fight dragons today?????" she bounced. Zoryn had been waiting for that lesson. 'Cause that's definitely something taught in DADA, right? She wouldn't know. Never opened the textbook. Ahem.

The second year quickly made her way to a log and took the blanket right off of it, wrapping herself up burrito style and then sat down. HA BURRRRRito style!!?!?! GET IT!?!?!? 'Cause it was so cold?!?!?!

AHAHAHHAHAHA. She cracked herself up!

...... Now, where were the marshmallows when you needed them?

TakemetotheBurrow 06-12-2017 10:51 PM

Junia made her way down to the lake, all bundled up and wondering what on earth possessed the defense professor to hold his lesson outdoors. Thank Merlin for charms that kept her clothes cozy and the fire which made the whole scene strangely inviting in a way she hadn't anticipated.

"Hello Professor." The fourth year curtsied, a polite smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She still wasn't entirely over what had happened with the healer and the fake out that left Abey out of sorts, but she was trying to be mature about the whole thing, particularly because defense was one of her favorite subjects...and it had been ages ago. It was just-well, when it came to people who'd hurt her family in some way, holding grudges was the easiest thing in the world.

Taking up a log by Oliver, the brunette set her hands in her lap and waited for class to begin.

Goblinfrog 06-12-2017 11:06 PM

"What is UP with this?!" Kitty said angrily through gritted teeth (when no one could overhear) as she trudged through cold weather towards the lake.

She really wasn't built for extreme weather, but more and more the professors were scheduling lessons outside in the cold. Already she'd gotten TWO colds this year, and they only went away when she'd gone to the hospital wing. Now she felt a third one coming on, and this ice treck to the lake was NOT helping.

Squinting through the GHASTLY weather, the prefect caught sight of a fire and the professor. She made her over there a quickly as possible.

"Hello professor. It's REALLY cold, isn't it?" She moved to sit down on one of the logs and hoped that the fire would warm her quickly.

SilverTiger 06-12-2017 11:24 PM

The weather was definitely not Stasya’s favorite, even if she figured she ought to be more familiar with it given where her mama was from. Or even papa, even if she’d actually never been to Yakutsk. Or Durmstrang for that manner, but the fact remained that she’d grown up pretty much just in Cornwall, so no matter how much she liked to think of herself as being from elsewhere, she hadn’t grown up in all the ice. Not really. But at least she hadn’t had too far of a walk to get to the DADA lesson, seeing as once again she’d been over in the barn visiting Dobby, Albus and all the other creatures. Honestly, she was surprised that by now Professor Wayland hadn’t begun to think she lived out there with how often she visited. But it did make lessons easier, when the professors seemed to like having them outside no matter how cold it was.

Either way, a well-bundled up blonde had made her way toward the big bonfire from the barns, her normal cheerful smile on her face as she had gotten closer to the group of people who had already arrived. “Hi Professor Hirsch!,” she called out, even as she’d pulled her scarf tighter around her neck and face, making her way over to where Jessa was and giving the older girl a grin. The bubblehead charm around the Ravenclaw’s face made her feel better about it all. She definitely didn’t want the smoke hurting her friend. And she’d waved at Dora and Olivia and a few of the others already there too for good measure.

The change of location was only slightly suspect in Althea's mind but for Professor Hirsch she would make an exception. Making sure to dress warmly, Althea made her way to the grounds half-expecting the lesson to be something fun at least, since they were outdoors. But, she couldn't also help but wonder if Hirsch wasn't going to put them through something incredibly intense.

When she came to the area where the lesson was being held, she paused to look around. The blocks of ice made her even more wary, but she would keep thinking positively. Feeling brave, Althea made her way close enough to speak but far enough away so that she wouldn't embarrass herself (which was still entirely plausible since it was Hirsch.) She did stare (for a moment!!!) before smiling and greeting the man."Hello Professor," she said quickly, and then made her way to sit on a log far, far, far away from him.

Zellanna 06-13-2017 12:00 AM

Kyle made his way toward the rather welcoming-looking fire that other students were getting seated around. What kind of lesson would need to be outside? And what was with the blocks of ice? Something seemed very strange about this lesson. Oh well, he wasn't about to complain. He took a seat at a cushion on a log a little away from the fire and looked around. He didn't see anyone he particularly recognized, though faces were becoming more familiar as he attended the lessons.

Expecto-Penguin 06-13-2017 01:03 AM

Zarina finally made it to the DADA lesson. Her very first one. This slytherin was quite excited. She was looking forward to this class because she heard great things. Zae wanted to know all the knowledge of how to defend yourself from the dark arts. As creepy as it sounds, she was interested in the dark arts and learning about the dark wizards. As Zae made her way to the classroom, she noticed she wasn't alone. She saw other students made it here too. She shrugged and made her way to her seat.

Zae tilted her head and saw it was a log. Hmmm? That interesting it had a blanket and she felt the cold chill and figured out why. She covered herself up and wrapped herself like the burrito. Now she saw the dreamy professor sitting in front of the class. She beamed and stuttered, "H-h-hey P-p-Professor..." Man could she talk normal for once in her life? After making a fool of herself she looked down and blushed. The ground looked exciting right now. Wait a minute the stuttering could be based on the cold. Yeah let's go with that.

hermygirl 06-13-2017 01:09 AM

The cold didn't bother Sam in the slightest. She tugged on her Ravenclaw scarf for aesthetic reasons, but other than that, all was well. She was actually slightly regretting the warming charm she'd used as she drew closer to the fire, and contemplated ending it.

"Hello, Professor," she greeted her Head of House with smile. "'ope yeh packed some marshmallows!" Because that was totally what this lesson needed, yep. She was sure others would agree. She smiled at Junia and Jessa as she went past, before giving a light chuckle at her Prefect's complaint. "It's not that bad." She'd been out in worse, in far fewer layers.

And there was a Dora. "Knut for your thoughts?" Or was she practicing pyromancy?

Crayola 06-13-2017 01:20 AM

Daisy didn't particularly mind the cold. Though she secretly preferred summer, there was a certain sense of calmness that came with the cold weather. Calmness and snowmen, snow angels, hot chocolate and Sunday mornings wrapped in a blanket in front of the fireplace. Unfortunately, it wasn't Sunday and she did have to leave the castle but one didn't become one of the best three U17 Chasers in the country without developing a certain resistance to the cold air.

Or, at least, becoming frankly good at wrapping up in layers and casting heating charms.

"Professor H." She nodded politely as soon as she approached the area, eyes glancing curiously arond the makeshift classroom he had set up before returning. He probably wouldn't even remember her behaviour during the first task but she was still a little bit embarrassed by it. Not of what she had done but how she had allowed her feelings to give way to what some would call disrespect towards the staff. Not that she had meant it but intentions really weren't everything. She'd swing by his office one of these days. For the time being, instead, she focused on the block of ice, the corner of her lips twitching upwards even as she started making her way towards one of the middle logs. "Do we really need more ice, Sir?" Pointedly, she looked around at the icy, snowed in grounds and grinned widely at man. Nope, they did not.

As she sat down on one of the logs, and despite how much she honestly enjoyed the snow, she couldn't help but to look up at the castle. Remember how Hirsch sometimes let them snuggle up in blankets and pillows? Yeah, that was fun.

There were two pairs of gloves on his hands and three socks on each of his feet, but Nicholas Tate had still lost feeling in all of his ten phalanges as he made his way to the lake. He also couldn't help the bright red color of his freckled nose and ears, brought on by the bite of the cold, but at least he was keeping his teeth from chattering.

What? There was no need to show weakness in relation to the weather— he'd display enough of that during the actual lesson.

"Hello, sir." Attempting to massage some nerve capacity back into his fingers, Nicky chose a log closest to the fire and settled himself on its cushion.

His bony bum needed it, honest.

Holmesian Feline 06-13-2017 02:11 AM

Cassie had caught the message on the notice board so she had headed out on the grounds for the latest defense lesson. Another day of bundling up to go outside for a class, just enough to keep herself warm but not restrict her movements. She was likely going to need to be moving after all, the whole nature of the class. Though outside they didn’t have the dummies…or did they? The fifth year fought the urge to eye the magicked blocks of eyes as the thought came to her. She wasn’t quite sure about the idea of fighting ice creatures, or snowmen, or the like.

But the fire…the warm, enticing fire. That she was always okay with. “Good day, Professor,” she greeted her head of house as she approached. Cass still wasn’t totally sure where she stood in the big picture, but she was getting there. For now, she was playing it by year. Like taking a seat on one of the logs and settling in for the lesson. Today was all she could focus on at the moment.

Cassirin 06-13-2017 02:28 AM

It was cold out, sure, but Katy wasn't overly concerned with the weather. It was winter. What were people expecting? Especially in Scotland. She knew how to dress warmly, she had warming charms, and she chose a log near the fire.

Done and done.

"Good day, Professor. Nice day for an outdoor lesson, hmm?" She grinned at him, holding out her hands to soak in warmth from the fire.

NifflerFan 06-13-2017 04:27 AM

Emmeline wondered when the professors were going to get tired of holding lessons outside as she wandered towards the lake from the creature barn. Probably when the weather was actually nice out instead of frostbite-inducing like today. The first year had on as many layers as possible, along with her warming-charmed winter cloak, but it was STILL too cold by the lake. The wind that always blew in wasn't helping at all! Still, she managed a smile and wave to Dora, Miss Olivia, and everyone else she knew. These fires that the professors liked making were a nice touch, but they never completely banished the cold either. Not for the first time, Emmeline wished that she could bring her cruppy to lessons with her so that he could cuddle on her lap. That way they'd both be warmer. As she got closer to the fire, the Gryffindor noticed the weird blue glow on the ice behind the professor; she wondered what was evil or Dark about ice. Anyway..: "Hi, Professor!", she chirped with a smile as she passed their Defence professor.

The first year made her way over to the log that Jessa and Stasya were sitting on. "Hi guys! What d'you think is up with the ice?", she asked as she plopped down next to them. Maybe one of the other girls had a clue as to what they were learning about today. She noticed Jessa's Bubble Head Charm with a sense of relief; she was glad that the real fire and its real smoke wouldn't bother her today.

Lady of Light 06-13-2017 11:38 AM

It was cold, cold, COLD. What was with all the classes happening outside recently? When it was literally freezing? Okay, so. Etta might be a little dramatic but she honestly preferred the warmth of the castle to the below-zero temperatures outside.. not that her opinion mattered. Looking a tad bit disgruntled, she made her way down to the lake, dressed in layers of clothing.

She spotted the professor and managed a smile, although it probably did look more like a frown. "Hello, professor. Hope you're doing well today." Oh, gosh. The icy wind was making literally making her teeth chatter. She spotted an empty log closest to the fire and sat down, the warmth from the fire making her sigh in relief. Phew. .. This felt great. She rubbed her hands and held them out close to the pit, waiting for class to begin.

Hai Hirsch Hai Zoryn!!

Probably a bit much for the Cold weather. OR JUST ENOUGH!!! Simon kinda sorta waddled his way down to where the DADA Class was to be held. Wearing a Heavy Winter Parka over his School Uniform, Snow Pants over his School Slacks. Replacing his School shoes with Thick insulted Winter boots, Ski Gloves, a Knitted Winter hat made by some House Elves back Home at the Estate with the most ridiculous little poof ball at the top it. Ear Muffs, and a Neck Warmer covering half his face.

Bit upset that the Lesson was to be held outside and not in the warm cozy indoors. NO WAY is his weak immune system gonna catch cold today for the sake of learning. Moving his way toward the logs Simon passed by Professor Hirsch "Hefro Profeffor Hirf" Except it could barely be heard, getting muffled from the neck warmer covering the lower half of his face.

The Second Year Badger then continued to waddle over a Log noting that there was another person already on it and had taken the blanket off used it all for themselves. (Zoryn)
He looked down at the bare log. Then he looked over at them again. Then the bare log. refusing to protest and concluding that he was already well protected from anything the dirty log might get him with, Simon sat down next to the Blanket Burrito.

Kimothy 06-13-2017 01:34 PM

Alright. Move it!

Nothing could ever possibly hype Vivian to participate in a lesson as much as Professor Hirsch could. Well, maybe Professor Myers as well because the Slytherin loved the subject he taught which was Herbology. But Professor Hirsch? He was something else. The blonde naturally skipped her way to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom before she realised... oh. Yeah, she had remembered that it was supposed to be somewhere near the Great Lake. LOL.

Once she reached the lake, Vivian skipped towards the class and flashed her ever so winning Fairfield beam at Hirsch. "Hello, Professor!" She said and then took a seat/log near him. See? Perfect spot.

RandomRaven 06-13-2017 02:20 PM

Defense Against the Dark Arts was her favorite lesson, hence she always paid attention about the notice. She knew that the lesson today was held at the lake so the Gryffindor didn't waste time to head into the usual classroom and walked straight to the lake instead.

Ava had dressed weather-appropriately and even cast an insulation charm to herself to keep her warm. It seemed like some other students did not pay attention to the notice board, huh? Typical. As she arrived at the location, Professor Hirsch had set up the campfire and the log. Ooooh, it's perfect for a weather like this "Hello, Professor!" Ava enthusiastically greeted the man and sat at the log next to Vivian.

ChanceCoeur 06-13-2017 02:20 PM

Noelle did look at the notice so seeing that they were to meet on the grounds today rather than the classroom, she came prepared. She had her heavy coat on, plus a little warming charm to help with the cold. She loved summer... her last name was Summers... so of COURSE she did.

Her scarf was pulled up high on her neck, showing off her Gryffindor pride as she made it to the grounds. Looking around, she waved at anyone and everyone. She was in a particularly GREAT mood today. She was now OF AGE. Seeing Professor Hirsch with his beard, sitting on a log, looking at peace, she waved over to him. "Hey professor!" She said brightly. One of her favorite professors of course.

Taking a seat, Noelle eyed the fire with interest and then... ice. Fire and Ice? Hmm.

She was ready.

Erindipity 06-13-2017 03:52 PM

Some mentions for the cuties!

It took a long few moments before Dora could rip her eyes away from the flames in front of her, but she did so when she heard her name. Olivia. Interesting. Dora gave her a small smile and a wave of her gloved hand. "'Lo," she said before turning her attention elsewhere. And it didn't take long to find someone to focus on. Zoryn. Ugh. What a cute kid. Annoying, but cute. And really Dora had gotten to the point that she didn't bother her nearly as much as she once had, so she got a more enthusiastic wave. Mhmm.

Then a few others got waves and smiles before Sam joined her. Stasya and Emmeline, of course. Cuties, they were. And it seemed like her house was showing up en force for this class. Not that that was particularly news... Gryffindors loved Defense class, after all. And she didn't think it had ANYTHING to do with Hirsch. Hmph.

Knut for your thoughts? This made Dora turn and smile at her bestie and give a half hearted shrug. "Nothing particularly. Just watching the fire." This wasn't the time to divulge some of her other thoughts anyway. People were around. People she didn't trust. Or like. But that was nothing new. And this face was compounded when she rolled her eyes at the mention of more ice someone near her had made. Daisy maybe. Whatever the case was, Dora wasn't looking that way or giving anyone else the time of day... Unless those people were Nicky Tate and Katy Toussaint. THEY got waves as they made their way to their respective logs and perched there. The girl REALLY needed to speak to Katy later, since she hadn't in a while.

Now turning back to watch the flames Dora said to Sam, "Are you warm enough?" Because she would totally help her cast some warming charms if need be... Although she was sure the girl could do it on her own.

Angie 06-13-2017 04:30 PM

Insulation charms had taken care of whatever cold the January winter may have caused and a deftly applied Henshu kept him from slipping down the icy pathways. For a lesson that was held outside, and one that required undivided attention, Levi Kenning was actually in a perfectly good mood. Remnants of the Christmas break, he supposed, or newly found confidence after facing down and defeating a dementor.

That was never going to get old.

By the time he arrived to the bonfire Professor Hirsch had set up, there were already plenty of students in wait. Sister got a pat on her shoulder, friends received smiles, girlfriend was sent a mischievous grin, Professor Hirsch was granted a nod. Probably ought to have looked at the man before looking at the said girlfriend because the hint of mischief remained in both the boy's dark eyes and smile when he'd turned to the professor, but.

Levi blinked quickly, forcing an impassive expression to make an appearance. Success rate of about ninety-percent. He stuffed his gloved hands inside his pockets, choosing to place himself a safe distance away from all the familiar faces; they would all prove to be distractions, no doubt. "Hello, Professor Hirsch."
