It's duel time and Ava was quiet excited for this. And she's going to face Henry on the first round. Professor Hirsch was known for his unpredictable decision when it comes to setting up someone for a duel (and sometimes he could be very evil like pairing two students who were best friends/lovers), but apparently not today. Still, the Gryffindor couldn't take her opponent easy.
Entering the duel are with the gear on, she bowed to the Hufflepuff prefect. "Good luck for us." She said. It's been a while since she joined the dueling club but Ava wouldn't forget the rules and how it's done. Starting with a featherlight charm to herself, Ava made a quick observation on where should she attack first. She didn't need to think for too long and then send the jelly-fingers curse on Henry's wand hand.

Henry was rather eager for the start of the dueling tournament. He had been practicing non-verbal spells specific for dueling and was looking forward to trying them out. Of course, he didn't know many, and the ones he could cast were not nearly as strong as his spoken incantations, but he thought this was a great place to put that practice to good use, plus it might give him an edge.
And his opponent was Ava. He didn't think it a bad thing to be dueling a friend and he knew it would be likely anyway as he was friends with most of those in his year, according to him. He gave the Gryffindor girl a big grin as he entered the arena and bowed in return. Right! "Good luck to us!" That was good sportsmanship and he was really more here to have fun anyway.
As she would cast first, Henry kept a vigilant watch to see what she would do and prepare to defend himself. Featherlight was always an interesting choice to see, especially since he thought it was his girlfriend who made that trend popular. It was a good spell to use in dueling though. But he waited for an offensive spell and he was almost disappointed with what she did send.
He quickly blocked her jelly fingers curse with a simple Protego, deflecting the curse back to her. "Come on, you can do better than that, Ava," he grinned. He knew she was a good dueler and he could handle more than that. He quickly cast Featherlight on himself, then he cast green sparks just above her head. Hoping that she would be distracted with the deflected spell and sparks, he quickly cast, "Fulgari!"

Was she going easy on Henry? Not really.
Her opponent might be a little bit surprised that she only send one spell to attack him. But Ava had learned that sometimes, too many attacks are not really necessary. Plus, this was actually a part of her trick, observing how's he actually doing while her head was thinking about where should she fire another attack. Patient, grasshopper." She smirked at him as keep herself vigilant. She should never been distracted and keep an eye on his moves.
Once she knew that Henry deflected her attack, the Gryffindor quickly defended herself by using shielding charm defending the deflected attack. More attacks had been sent by the Hufflepuff prefect but again Ava cast shield charm to both of them. Merlin, that was close!
"Incarcerous!" She cried conjuring the ropes to tie up his feet, followed by disarming his wand.

Henry could be patient. Well, to a point, but this was just a fun duel so he hadn't meant anything serious by it anyway. He was very interested in seeing how she'd respond to his attack though, considering he had never actually dueled Ava before.
So.. one shield after another. Interesting. Of course, defensive spells had been his go-to when he first started dueling in the tournament, and he likely would have done something similar. But it might prove to be a boring duel if they were simply blocking each other. Time would tell though, and he was working out his strategy as he watched to see what she'd do next.
Figuring she'd come at him with a one-two attack this time, Henry jumped out of the way of the ropes headed towards his feet, which was made easier by the featherlight charm he had cast on himself at the beginning. That was mostly the point of it after all. And then he quickly shielded himself with Protego, again deflecting back her spell - this time Expelliarmus.
"Not bad!" He grinned at her more challenging attempt this time, but he really needed to catch her off guard this time. "Avis! Oppugno!" he called out, conjuring birds to attack her. And then he followed that with a non-verbal Rictusempra, one of his favorite dueling spells. Hopefully she'd be distracted enough by the birds and since she wouldn't be able to hear him casting, then that one would reach its mark.

Merlin's beard... Henry was quite good avoiding her attack and deflected it back. Oops, quickly she cast the shield charm against the disarming charm. Ava might need to think harder about her attacks. But on the bright side, she did pretty good on using the shield charm, right? As the Gryffindor noticed that there was an incoming bird attack, reflectively she sent finite charm against the bird.
Apparently she had no time to breath as Henry sent a nonverbal attack. "Protego!" She cried, this time she deflected the attack back following by stickfast hex and calvorio because... Didn't Hufflepuff boys care about their hair very much? Hehehe. And now... let her take a breath first, Merlin.

It kind of didn't surprise Henry that Ava defended the deflected spell and the attacking birds. He just wasn't sure how she could possibly be so quick with them. But what really surprised him was how quickly she defended against his non-verbal attack. Like, how did she even know that he cast it to be that reflexive with a shield? And really, he had worked so hard to learn some simple non-verbal spells that he wondered what was even the point in exerting so much of his magic when it would just be blocked so easily. It was disheartening and... well, disappointing.
But it was one duel and he still intended on having fun with it as that was primarily his reason for being in dueling club. Henry moved out the way of the deflected spell, though that pushed him in the way of the stickfast hex. And though he might be stuck to the floor for a moment, he figured she'd try for a one-two attack again and blocked her next spell with Protego.
And then for his offensive spells. He didn't see the point in trying for another non-verbal spell, even if he figured Ava simply got lucky last time, but it didn't mean he was giving up. Ears to Kumquats was sent first, followed by the stickfast hex in case she tried to dodge that one or the one before. And just to change it up since she was probably expecting a one-two spell as was the usual for Henry, he sneakily cast one more - Incarcerous - right when he was bent down to cast Finite to his shoes.

Breaaaaathe, Ava.
She had to admit that it was not easy defeating Henry Whittebrook. The Gryffindor needed a new way to attack him. Perhaps trying some spells that she rarely used before. As she watched the Hufflepuff prefect got trapped at her stickfast hex, she couldn't help but grinned. Ah, remembered when Ava used that hex to defeat the boy who now became her boyfriend?
But she lost her focus as Henry attacked her with Ear to Kumquats due to nostalgia moment. EEEPPPP!!! Ava couldn't hear the spell that her opponent had sent so she rolled over to avoid the second attack. Focus, Burton! "Protego!" She quickly sent a shield charm and deflected it back. Her ears might be a problem but she quite kept an eye on Henry. Quickly she cast finite on her ears and sent stinging hex.

There....... were a lot of shield spells being struck up, weren't there?
Not that Hirsch minded, considering the fact that it was a defensive strategy, but it was enough to cause him to raise his eyebrows. It was known that once a duellist got so turned in with a spell, casting it would almost become second nature to them so he couldn't help but wonder if that was the case here. Maybe it was just a reflex action at this point.
Giving his shoulders a small shrug, he watched the duel continue, noting how intense the air between the two was getting. Clearly, it wasn't an easy duel, especially not since both of the duellers were good at duelling in the first place. But considering the fact that they were NEWT level students, they clearly needed a bit of a challenge. This subject was not an easy ride. Sorry.
A few glances were made to his watch every now and then and, before long, the duel had to come to a close. The shield was struck up, saving Mr Whittebrook from not one, but two spells in this case. You're welcome, Mr Prefect.
"Excellent!" he said, stepping out from the background, "Really excellent. That was an intense but an interesting duel, I have to say. I'm proud of the level of spellwork being displayed here." Particularly that nonverbal. Well done, indeed. "While you've put up a great fight, Mr Whittebrook, it's you, Miss Burton, who have taken the lead today. Congratulations!"
And they were free to go.
Stats: Ava Burton: 91.14% Henry Whittebrook: 83.81%
