An area outside the Greenhouses has been converted into a large area, to be exact, with colorful and very specific plants. Closed in like a sandbox, the area has wooden edges so the students would know that THIS is where the activity would be taking place. Paul Myers stands waiting, leaned against a Wiggentree, but carefully eyeing the leaves above him as he does so. A warming charm has been casted on the area, so don't worry about the chilly cold. Orchids, beautiful and white and light pink, filled the area. Pink mushrooms sprouted from the ground here and there; foliage, thick greenery, painted the scene as well. Paul was quite happy with how many of these plants he had managed to get in for the activity. And of course, Tristan was there, too. And the cool things HE had gotten in…
Just. Cool, man. This was going to be cool, or at least Paul and Tristan hoped so.
So come and join us for the extra credit opportunity! Extra points are always fun, yeah?
OOC: HI guys! This is a SUPER LOWKEY but RP-able extra credit activity Suzy and I have come up with! If you feel you have too much going on and can't attend, no worries! Like I said, this is super low key and won't really function like a lesson at all. It's an activity. Secondly, it WILL require characters to work in pairs. If you are uncomfortable with this, I'm putting it out there right now! But if you or your character feel like it, post away! We changed this, no pairs. Suzy and I will be moving on at some point at least 24 hours from now just to give everyone a chance to show up. Chatting is allowed.
<3
Also I'm aware this is before any of my lessons have taken place OOC, but it's just how the cookie crumbled. It's well into term by this point, so obviously the kiddos have experienced Herbology and Paul by now.
Emmeline was getting more and more excited as the herbology professor laid out their instructions. She was hoping to get to see a bowtruckle today, even if just in passing.
The first year pulled her gloves on and grabbed a jar as she learned that she would be hunting horklumps! She knew they looked like pink mushrooms with lots of flesh and black whisker type hair. Wishing her friends good luck, the Gryffindor plunged into the area set up for the assignment and immediately crouched down. She'd have to scan the ground carefully to spot a horklump. She wandered over to an area thick with foliage and began gently moving grass and small plants aside to look more closely for these creatures. She was glad they would be rescued before a gnome got them.
No luck so far though.

The power-nap that Althea had decided to take (in hindsight, it was a terrible idea,) had quickly turned into a deep sleep and, subsequently, had also made her late to the extra credit thing that her lovely (read: insufferable) Head of House had put together. Wonderful. She took her time getting to the greenhouses, and took in the scene before her. There was a lot of things happening and she didn't understand how or why they were doing what they were doing.
Taking note of both professors, she made her way over to them. With all the strength that she could muster, Althea gave Meyers a small smile. "I'm late," she said as a way of greeting Professor Meyers (because how else could she greet her ridiculous Head of House??) And to Professor Wayland, she gave an even bigger smile and said: "Hello, Professor. I hope I'm not too late for the extra credit."

As the professors had returned her greeting, Stasya had simply given them another smile. There were more important things to focus on, like trying to decide what kinds of creatures might be present in their little enclosure. Given the trees, she figured that there must be some of Picketta’s relatives hiding around, making her want to ask if Derf had smuggled his bowtruckle out here so she could visit with the others. Maybe her mama was out here. That would be kind of cool, except for the idea that maybe Professor Wayland had taken her away from her mama and that was kind of horrible. She didn’t want to think that. So instead, she tried to figure out what other creatures might be here too.
As the Herbology professor had begun explaining what they were going to be doing, she found herself listening intently. At least, until he did his little dance or whatever, which made her giggle softly. It was just kind of funny, but she also didn’t want to scare any creatures by being too loud. She’d tilted her head at the little pause too. Mantises were totally animals. Just because they were insects didn’t make them worth any less than the other creatures. But anyway…she went over to pick a slip of paper from the cup he held, and looked at it. Orchid mantises. Okay. As she saw Isa and the Slytherin girl she didn’t remember having really met yet going over toward the orchids, she grinned a little. This was going to be fun.
And there wasn’t any reason to need to remind her about treating the creatures gently. She always did that. He could ask Dobby and Albus if he wanted to. If Professor Myers spoke squirrel and puffskein. She had a mantis to find, though, so she got down on the ground to crawl over by the Slytherin girl. Maybe it’d be easier being at mantis level. Not yet, though.

Professor Wayland began speaking about Bowtruckles just in time for the Curly Top to turn his paper over. He grinned, oh this is gonna be gooooood.
He got some woodlice as instructed, laying a nice thin layer on a tin. He neared the Wiggentree as he temptingly waved the tin "Are any of you here?" he cooed, scoping out each square inch of the branch. It is indeed like Where's Waldo, except all his vision is filled with greens and browns--
-- Oh movement! He focused on what he though was just a stem at the corner of his eye and saw the Bowtruckle started to creep slowly towards the tin "Here ya go buddy, nomnom!" he whispered as he let the bowtruckle climb into the tin and started having a feast. Slowly he moved the twiggy creature into the collecting jar, sprinkling more woodlice to keep it preoccupied.

Vivian took moments to kneel from her crawling position for her to be able to get a deep breath. When she signed up for this creature hunt extravaganza thing, she didn't know it would require kneeling and getting dirty. But, oh well... she was here now. The Slytherin wasn't going to back out when she was already this far. She used her sleeve to wipe the sweat that was on forehead before going back down to crawl.
Where in the name of Merlin did those orchid mantises go? Vivian took a moment to sniff the orchids because they really smelled good, like what Professor Paul said. However, she wasn't going to let distractions stop her. Just when the fourth year was about to sniff another orchid, she squinted her eyes. Now she didn't know orchids had two tiny antennas sprout out of their petals. The Slytherin beamed when she saw it and then carefully pulled the mantis. "C'mon, let go. Please." The tiny insect kept clinging for dear life until she was finally able to gently wiggle him off the flower.
"GOT ONE!" And that was one mantis for the team!

To pick an animal.... UM. Etta decided to go with Horklumps. Bowtruckles seemed interesting but they were too much work.. and their food was rather.. uh. Yeah. Better to go with something rather simple, yes? And they were harmless creatures too.
Anyway, where to look? Obviously, a horklump would be found among the mushrooms, right? She put on her gloves and walked towards where the pink mushrooms were, her eyes scanning the area slowly.. trying to figure out where it was hiding. After a little while, she decided that just looking wouldn't do. It would be practically impossible to find one that way. So she sat down on her knees and let her hands run across the tops of the pink mushrooms.. occasionally tapping her finger on the caps.
Hey.. WAIT. There it was.. one that was moving. Quick to react, she gently reached for it.. trying to ignore the sudden weird smell. Did these creatures stink? Or.. ew.. was it eating something? Wrinkling her nose, she lifted the horklump and placed it in the required jar, glad that she caught one.. at least.

Oooh this was exciting! There were camouflaged little creatures all around this place. Olly glanced around, as if he might be able to spot any just by looking. But of course he couldn't because they were all clever and good at hiding. It made the artist part of his brain spin. He wanted to paint a picture with a creature hiding in it that wasn't obvious at first glance. How cool would that be?
Olly was distracted by that thought for a moment but then they were pulling slips to get their animal. When it was Olly's turn he got a leaf tailed gecko. That sounded pretty cool. "Noelle, what did you get?" He tried to look over at her slip. "We got the same one!" That meant they were practically working together! He grinned at her and held out his hand for a high five. And then it was time to get to work. He headed over to the plants and kept his eyes peeled. He was not good at noticing things really but he was going to work really hard to find some of these leaf tailed geckos. It was like hide and seek.
A GAAAAAAAAAAME. Matt liked games. Much more than lessons, so he was totally looking forward to this thing. Would he learn anything from it as well? He didn't mind if they didn't, but it would be helpful if they did since then he wouldn't have to read about it.
Ideal.
Right, time to catch some creatures that looked like plants! Matt started off in a random area becaaaause truth be told, he wasn't sure where those types of creatures would be.
They were mushroom-like thingies, if he remembered correctly, soooo... very near the floor, he supposed. And tree trunks.
...
Weeeeeeell, maybe that was too obvious. None around where he was.
Let your light shine || Be the sun || You're important. Always.
Hearing Wayland say hey to her, Noelle blushed. She didn't have time to think about it though too much because the extra credit was happening. Getting her slip, she saw that she had the leaf tailed gecko. She looked up at Wayland and heard what he was saying about approaching animals... specifically bowtruckles, but that worked with all animals right?
"Oh yay! We both got the same!" Noelle said while high fiving Olly. She started looking for the gecko. Or one of the geckos that is. "Be careful. Do geckos have teeth?" Because that would hurt if they did... but Noelle had no idea.
Prodding around (gently) Noelle saw one... or the tongue of one. She grinned and pointed to it. "Olly look! There!" Then she approached it cautiously and made a swift grab. "I GOT IT!"
Only she didn't..... it was just a leaf... with a pink tip. Opps!

"Here, m'dear, pick your creature!" he grinned and held out the cup to her. WHAT HAD SHE GOTTEN?!

GOOD LORD PAUL WHIPPED AROUND AT THE QUESTION and looked at Noelle for a few seconds before clearing his throat to answer. "Yes, dear, geckos do have teeth." And Paul knew enough about lizards to do know. Or rather, reptiles, because he wasn't sure if geckos counted as lizards. But definitely reptiles. "They don't use their teeth for eating. They generally only use them to defend themselves," he added, glancing at Wayland to make sure he was right. hE KNEW SOME CREATURE STUFF OK? He minored in creatures at University. He was not as knowledgable as Wayland, though. Nope nope. He would stick to his dear ole' plants.
OOC: Guys, you have to roll the same as the person above you to get the creature xD and if the person before you for some reason didn't roll, then you look to the person behind them. <3 sorry for the confusion! It only matters who posted before you OOC. For example, Candice above me rolled a tails, so if I were to roll a tails right now, even if we have different creatures, I'd find mine.

"What are we doing?!"BLINK, BLINK, BLINK! There seemed to be a lot going on, so hopefully she could still join in. It might've crushed her had she not been allowed to.

Also, were they starting to notice how they could find their creatures and tell them apart from the plant counterparts? HMMMM?

Already halfway into the mass of orchids, Stasya’s head had popped up like just another flower as she’d heard the Slytherin girl say she’d found one. That was awesome. They had one mantis already, so now it was her mission to find another one. Unless Isa found one first, or the Slytherin girl found another one. She really needed to find out her name, too. Maybe after they’d found all the mantises, because she still didn’t want to startle them now. Not when she was probably practically in the midst of them. But, while she was still sort of above the flowers, she also had a question. “Professor? The creatures won’t suffocate in the jars, right?” That was important to know. She really didn’t want to accidentally hurt the mantises.
Now back to her search, and her blonde head disappeared amongst the brightly colored orchids again as she started crawling again. She had to focus. She had to find a mantis…Huh She peered intently at a blossom just to the left of her nose. That didn’t look right. Petals didn’t have legs, or at least she didn’t think they did. Reaching up, she stopped her hand just next to the flower and watched as a mantis made its way over onto her hand curiously, as if it thought it was another flower. She gently closed her fingers around the insect and quickly crawled backwards out of the flowerbed.
“I found one too!”

Olly glanced over at Noelle when she said she had found one. He grinned. Yay! They would have one! Except she actually hadn't found one and she was just lying to him. Just kidding. Those creatures were pretty well camouflaged. Olly turned the other direction to look for some more lizards. Geckos. What were they again? Leaf tailed geckos, right. He though he saw something moving and hurried toward it. His hand shot out but he wasn't fast enough. He couldn't even see whether or not it had been a leaf tailed gecko. Whatever it was had gotten away.
Right. Now, to catch another one. Etta headed back to the mushrooms once again, wondering if she could spot another horklump somewhere.... anywhere.. UM. She frowned, walking around a bit.. it seemed to be taking more time. Or maybe she was just too impatient. Come on, Etta. It really wasn't that difficult, right? She kept pacing for a while before giving a small frustrated sigh and dropping to the ground.
Like earlier, she once again started to run her gloved fingers over the tops of the mushrooms.. "Hey, you guys. Where are you?" She muttered softly, leaning forward slightly. After a little while though.. she saw one.. or was that a horklump? She tapped it a few times and sure enough.. it was moving! EEEEEP. She quickly moved to pick it up, almost losing her balance in the process. The fifth year carefully lifted it, muttering small, soothing sounds and placed in the jar. She gave a satisfied smile before setting out to find more.

"Thank you, Professor Myers!" Tristan said with a grin and a nod. He was glad his explanation was understandable. It wasn't that hard to lure Bowtruckles after all. The other insects...all you really need to do with them is pluck them out of their hiding spots.
Tristan smiled and greeted the two late comers, listening as Paul explained the activity and gave them their creatures. "No need to worry. It's never to late for extra credit." He grinned and gave the girls a wink and then went on to explain the procedures on how to lure Bowtruckles out of their trees to Olivia. "Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!!" He said with a grin waving them towards the plants with the other students all crowded around them.
Listening to Noelle's question, made him want to laugh but he refrained. Paul did a very good job at explaining and he gave the older gentleman a smile, wink, and nod of approval. It seemed as if the students were really starting to find the creatures. For many it was very difficult to tell the difference between plant and insect. "Seems to be going well, Paul." He said quietly with a smile to the wiser professor. He was sure the jars would be filled to the brims soon enough!

Merlin's beard. Geckos were not easy to find.
"Okay you little buggers, come out come out wherever you are!!" Noelle said, walking with Olly and making little grabs along the way. She watched as Olly reached out to grab at something but didn't get anything.
Going to another part, Noelle thought she saw some movement. Being cautious of other animals... yes we see you bowtruckle... she reached out to touch something... and came back with a leaf.
After scouring the first area she'd spotted for several minutes, Emmeline concluded that there were no horklumps to be found there. Time to move on!
She stayed in the crouched position so as to be low to the ground and sort of scuttled like a crab over to a group of mushrooms. She knew she looked ridiculous doing that, but if she caught lots of horklumps it would totally be worth it. There were boring gray and brown ones with a couple of pink and white ones scattered in as well. Emmeline bent down even further so that her face was super close to the mushrooms -- never mind the dirt climbing up her robes -- and gently reached out a finger to poke each pink-ish one.
Poke. Poke. Poke.
She sighed and got ready to crab-walk to another area. She guessed that these really were just super boring mushrooms. Too bad. She had started scuttling away again when she spotted a pink mushroom on the very far edge of the group. And, were those black whisker things coming out of it? Her excitement growing, the first year tentatively reached out to Poke this one, and it was definitely different from the other 'shrooms! She'd done it! Giving the little thing a wide smile, she reached out to move some of the soil that it had drilled itself into aside and gently plucked it out of the ground. "It's okay, Mr. Horklump. I won't hurt you," she assured him as she carefully placed him into the jar she was carrying.
This was so cool! Time to find another one and another one!
Unfortunately, it was at this point in time that Emmeline overheard Stasya's super important question about the jars. They could suffocate the creatures?! Well, she wasn't having that. The first year quickly fished the horklump out of her jar and settled him back in where she'd found him. She'd move on now to throw people off his track, and if the jars were safe, she'd come and collect him again later.

Ok he had to drift further away from the Wiggentree because so many other students were looking through it--
---wait whats that?? The Gryffindor lad nearly missed it because of the proximity of the creature to his head, apparently very very interested in the woodlice tin he's been shaking about as he wandered. "Oh you want summa these doncha?" shake shake shake at the eager bowtruckle.

Althea didn't have a particular interest in playing hide-and-seek with any creatures today, but the prospect of extra credit had made her geared up and ready to go. Thankfully, the orchid mantis was terrifyingly beautiful, and Althea felt it was appropriate considering she had a terrifying beauty as well. Confidence did wonders for a girl. Slipping her gloves on, the fifth year set to work. With her brows knitted together she roamed around, looking in places she felt that the creature would be.
She opted to check near the orchids because, well, the mantis was probably settled near one of them or on one of them. She would not be fooled! After a few minutes of searching, she sighed, frustrated that her efforts were in vain. "If I were an orchid mantis, where would I be," she mused out loud; she stood very still and thought for a moment before going to search elsewhere
Sorry I totally missed this question...didn't see the dialogue!

That was a very valid and good question for the young Gryffindor to ask. But she need not worry. He had taken every precaution to ensure that the creatures wouldn't be harmed in the jars. "Not to worry, Stasya. They will not suffocate. I promise." He said to the first year with a reassuring smile.
He would never harm any creature great or small. Besides...she should know by now that he wasn't going to let anything happen to those little guys. They were so beautiful and unique, he used every spell possible to make sure they would be comfortable.

Derf did NOT want to be happy about this because this was Professor Dark Lord Myers they were all talking about and anything the man did SHOULD NOT BRING HIM JOY only that had already happened on numerous occasions including the humble collection of fireseeds still tucked safely away under his bed and it was REALLY hard to NOT smile when he heard what they were doing. Like...REALLY HARD.
ESPECIALLY WHEN HE SAW THAT HE WAS TO COLLECT LEAF TAILED GECKOS! UROPLATUS PHANTASTICUS!
Taking off almost immediately, Derf performed a weird sort of shuffle dance because this meant he had to pick up and get up close and personal with leaves. THANKFULLY this mostly meant DEAD ones which implied DEAD trees more or less.
"PROFESSOR!" he chirped as he ran by on his way towards an especially dead looking tree. "How come you have S-SO many?! They are endemic to Madagascar." CONSERVATION EFFORT?!
Cautiously tip toeing towards the tree - you know, in case it was a flesh eater and decided to wake up or something - his bright blue eyes scanned the leaves for any sort of indication that it was more than JUST a leaf he was looking at. And then he saw IT. A TONGUE! A tongue had totally shot out from the brown to like an eyeball! "Found yooooooou," he said in a sing song voice, caaaaaaarefully reaching out his hands and scooping up the tea leaf gecko and placing it on his shoulder. "Help me find more of your friends-s-s, okay?"
Okay.

The first year breathed a sigh of relief when Professor Wayland said that the creatures wouldn't suffocate in their jars. She found it suspicious that it was he who had answered Stasya's question, and not the Herbology professor. Her friend had asked the latter, after all. This further cemented her suspicions that Derf was right, and the Herbology professor really was into Dark magic. We see you, Mr. Dark Wizard.
Reassurance meant that it was okay to put the horklump she'd already found in her jar for good. She rushed carefully (so as not to tread on any camo creatures) back to the mushroom patch she'd found earlier and was delighted to see that her horklump hadn't gone far. He was just a few inches over from where she'd left him; the move had clearly been to lay down his roots in a more firm spot. Emmeline bent down and dug a little bit around him so that she wouldn't tear up his roots by accident when she picked him up. She used both hands to gently lift him from his spot in the ground and deposit him in her jar. "It's okay," she assured him in a whisper, "you're safe now." She wasn't letting her jar anywhere near gnomes, nope.
Emmeline collected her jar and crab-walked to another area to look for more horklumps. Now that she thought about it, though, these jars looked suspiciously like the ones from the owl shop in Diagon Alley that were full of insects. Insects to feed to owls. But surely they wouldn't...
"Excuse me, professors," she asked as she raised her hand, "what's going to happen to all these creatures we're finding?" If they said they were food for others, she was taking her jar and running for the forest. She understood about the circle of life and all that, but she also thought it was mean to pluck these creatures up just to be food. Bigger creatures would never learn how to feed themselves that way, and somehow it seemed more like murder to her if she'd been the one to bottle up horklumps only to serve them to gnomes on a platter.

It seemed as if the students were really starting to find the creatures. For many it was very difficult to tell the difference between plant and insect. "Seems to be going well, Paul." He would never harm any creature great or small. Besides...she should know by now that he wasn't going to let anything happen to those little guys. They were so beautiful and unique, he used every spell possible to make sure they would be comfortable.
"Yes, yes it does. Though, I thought they'd be finding creatures more easily." Oops. mAYBE IT WAS TOO HARD? Paul made a slight face at Tristan but then smiled. "Maybe we won't wait for the jars to be filled." Because he squinted and....yeah. None of the jars were close. And they couldn't take ALL DAY. Fascinating stuff, really.
He smiled at Staysa's question. "No, they'll be fine. Do you think we'd let that happen, m'dear?" Of course not!
SPOILER!!: Derf

Okay.
To Derf's question, though, Paul smiled. "These are from a sanctuary. Very kind of them to let us borrow them. We will return them back once we're done. I don't think we really have the right things here to fully care for the geckos." As tempting as it was to ...maybe, perhaps, steal one, Paul wouldn't. You had to do what was best for the animal!
"So, Derf, what else do you know about those geckos?" he asked the boy curiously.

Paul turned to Emmeline and smiled at the first year. "We will put them back where we got them from. I was just telling Derf we got the geckos from a sanctuary. We'll put them back there. The bowtruckles are Professor Wayland's," right? He shot a glance at Tristan just to make sure. "I can't keep the Wiggentrees, either. Gotta give those back." Of course. "I will probably keep the mantises..." he admitted with a cheeky grin. They were too beautiful not to ;__;
"All right everyone, just a few more minutes of this!" he grinned. And then they had to MOVE ON to educational nonsense.

Olly's eyes were working very hard to try and spot a gecko among the trees. Every time he thought he saw one it turned out to just be a regular leaf. He was beginning to get frustrated, actually, and was about ready to give up. Maybe there weren't actually any out there and this was all just a big trick. Except, no, that couldn't be it. Professor Myers would never do that to him. Olly paused for a moment and took a deep breath to clear his mind before continuing his search. There had to be one somewhere.
Was that just his imagination or had that leaf moved? It was possible it could have just been the wind, but Olly hadn't felt a breeze. He crept forward as carefully as possible. No, that was not his imagination, that was a gecko! He reached out and snatched the little guy - very carefully so as not to hurt him - from his hiding spot.
"I GOT ONE!" His yell was mostly directed toward Noelle. He hadn't been paying attention well enough to know who else was searching for the same thing. Olly hurried back to their jar and set the little guy in his new, temporary, home.
