It was a beautiful March morning and, though still a little brisk, the weather was quiet nice. Tristan, as usual, set up their class area in the pastures just outside of the barn. He set out the bales of hay in a semi-circle for everyone to sit on with the blackboard in front. As usual, the creature they would be working with was going to be a little bit of a surprise.
Tristan had been creating amazing hay bale structures for him to sit on all term. He really wanted to think up something super cool and interesting this time, but was running a smidge late this morning due to the late delivery of the creature they would be working with today. So instead, he created a very comfortable, and slightly itchy, chaise lounge out of hay. Tristan lounged about, holding his mug full of Chai Tea, and tried not to fall asleep waiting for his students to arrive.

HE WAS HERE! And had been her too, obviously. If there was one class the second year was never late for it was this one. He was just...er...distracted as it were and was continuously venturing glances towards the nursery and Picketta. He really REALLY wanted to go see his bowtruckle, you know? And since establishing that he HAD in fact become her Home Tree it was an EXTRA SPECIAL adventure every time he went to see her and sometimes took her out but extended skinship was necessary for this sort of thing, you know?.
The professor had received a VERY spirited greeting from the second year as always, but his concentration was wavering between the topic at hand and and his bocktruckle.
That is...until a thought struck him.
Yes, he could ramble off fact after fact about the demiguise and totally had that section of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them memorized...but most people had said just about everything and he had a MUCH more pressing question.
"Profes-s-soooooor," he hissed while keeping his voice down JUST IN CASE. "Are we....are we S-S-SITTING among them NOW?!" Since they could turn invisible and stuff.
His bright blue eyes shot around the area looking EAGERLY for any sign of one of the creatures manifesting itself.

OOOOH Demiguise! Kane thought these guys were rather interesting - and pretty cute too, to be completely honest. He'd totally be down to get a pet Demiguise someday. If they weren't hunted for their hair...that was so not cool, man.
He raised his hand. "They can see the future!" he exclaimed with excitement. That was wayyy cooler than the invisible camouflage...thing, in his opinion.

Hear her? Sam shook her head as her friend's whisper, a knowing smile curling on her lips. "That's why I dropped my voice," she whispered back. "And anyways, you're the one staring at him all starry-eyed."
Had someone dropped the Gryffindor Champion a love potion? It was curious. Curious indeed.
But questions were happening, and Sam was intrigued to hear that demiguises were the topic. She hadn't seen one since she was a kid, and only then briefly and from a distance. Turned out there could be quite the black market for them around Knockturn Alley, given their invisibility ability and being so problematic to catch. Now she knew they were Seers, she couldn't help but wonder if Dark Witches and Wizards might have more nefarious purposes for them, however.
"We used tincture of demiguise in potions at the start of the year, to make a invisibility potion...and Professor Canterbury suggested that adding hairs would strengthen the effects." Although she was unclear specifically how the tincture was obtained. She was pretty sure that the explanation had never actually fully materialised. Just something about them not being harmed.
And because she was curious...
"Can witches and wizards somehow make use of a demiguise's ability to see the future? Or does their Sight not extend that far?"

Ooohh, demiguises! They were pretty interesting and kinda cute, so Rula was very curious about this lesson.
But first, questions! And a lot of the facts about them were quickly offered up, but she still raised her hand. "The invisibility cloaks made from their hair don't work forever though. They lose their effects over time." So you'd need to buy a new one every so often, though the exact amount of time probably varied depending on how well it was made. Or maybe it was always the same amount of time? She wasn't actually sure.

Tristan tried his best not to chuckle. Derfael, as usual, asking questions instead of answering them. Though, when he did answer them, his answers were spot on. "No, Derfael. They aren't right next to you. They are about 10 feet that way...notice the small blue lights over there....That's them." But they would hopefully be among them soon if this next bit went smoothly.

Tristan was actually wondering why she didn't just use the hairs, but the Potions Professor knew her stuff and was very talented at potion making, so he was sure she had a new and better ingredient than just hair. "Yes, Demiguise hair can be used in invisibility potions. Tincture is generally an extract of something. So she could have been using an extract of the creatures hair which could be why the hair would strength the potions." Yep, Professor Canterbury was a smart cookie!
"According to many years of study and research, a Demiguise's precognitive sight cannot be extended to us, unfortunately." You either had that ability naturally, or you didn't.

"That is correct, Rula. Though they do last a pretty good while, you still have to replace an invisibility cloak over a certain amount of time." He grinned and turned to see if anyone else had any answers.
"Very, good answers everyone. But I want to go back to these creatures being able to 'see the future.' That isn't exactly the case." He paused, wishing he had more tea, "Demiguise have what is called Precognitive sight. This is the ability to see what will happen in the immediate future. As in they can see what will happen in the moment, not months ahead of time like a true Seer. So technically, yes, they can see what will happen and adjust their movement accordingly, but it is in the moment, not the future." He hoped that cleared up some of the confusion. "So back to Jessa's question. It is very difficult to catch them, yes. That is why they have the XXXX rating from the ministry. The best thing to do in order to catch one is think about multiple options you can make and make a split decision. In other words, be unpredictable and think outside of the box, which is a lot harder for some than others." He said with a grin.
"Now, as we know Demiguise are peaceful herbivores originally found in the far East. They are typically found in most Asian countries, such as China, Japan, Korea, etcetera. They look similar to apes with large black eyes, and long silver hair. When their precognitive sight kicks in, their eyes turn blue." He said with a smile, "A couple students mentioned that they were close relatives to Hidebehinds, when actually, the reason Hidebehinds exist is because a Demiguise and a Ghoul mated. So they are more than just relatives. Hidebehinds are the slightly creepy offspring of of the Demiguise and Ghoul." Yep...they were creepy, but that was beside the point.
"Now, to their hair." He paused to collect his thoughts, "It is a very sought after product, which pains me to say, and in the past, Demiguise were killed for their pelts." It was sad indeed. Really, all they needed to do was....well they would get to that later. "But now with all the research and the creature activism, they are not allowed to be harmed and their hair must be obtained in a humane way, which we will get to later." He said with a small grin.
"But for now, I want you to take some of these appetizing bits of fruit and leaves from the bucket, and try and lure a Demiguise to you. Watch for a moment and you will see how simple and difficult it can be." Tristan picked up a peach and slowly made his way towards the group of Demiguise. Most of them had become visible by now, but with how close he had gotten to them, they had all become invisible. See...even though these creatures knew him, they still had a lot of fear of him. He sat down on the ground, crossing his legs, and took out a small parring knife, and began to peel the peach. A blue light began to come towards him very slowly. Tristan grinned, and kept peeling. He then cut it in half, removing the pit, and cut the peach into smaller pieces. Suddenly, a little silver hand appeared in front of him. He smiled and slowly handed a piece of peach over to the Demiguise. The creature, took the piece, gobbled it whole, and then sat in Tristan's lap. Tristan smiled and kept feeding the creature small pieces.
"That my, friends, is the secret to every creature. Feed them." He said it quietly, but loud enough for the students to hear. "You may do this activity in pairs or individually. As you can see, there are plenty of the sweet creatures to go around." He grinned and kept feeding the Demiguise bits of peaches.
OOC: Okay, y'all! Sorry, I know that was a lot of info in one post, but it was necessary! So! This is the mini activity. The food bucket has apricots, peaches, ginko leaves, loquat, and bamboo leaves and parring knives next to them if you need it, unless you would rather use a wand. But please no injuries. Demiguise are herbivores and being from Asian countries the only eat Asian fruits and plants, and yes apricots and peaches can be found in Asian countries You may chose what ever you want to feed them. Your task is to entice the creatures to sit near you and eat the food you give them. They don't have to necessarily sit in your lap, the only reason that was possible for Tristan is because these creatures know him well. As stated you can do this in pairs or individually. This activity will carry over to our main activity, so make sure you are able to keep the creature near you.
Use as many posts as you want, have them struggle and have to work for it...or have it come easy to them! Most importantly, have fun!
We will move on in about 30 to 36 hours If your students have questions feel free to ask!

Jonas smiled. This was something he could do! He walked over to get a fruit and pairing knife. He cut the fruit into pieces Careful not to cut his fingers He then put the knife down and quietly walked closer to the creatures.
"c'mon" he smiled handing out his hand with the apricot piece in it. But the demiguise wouldn't go near him.
"Come on, aren't you hungry?" he asked.

Kirk sat back and listened to the answers from his peers and the lecture from the Professor. It was a bit to take in, but Kirk was good at getting the jist of things. Plus it helped having a smart girlfriend next to him as he grinned at Mel. Demiguises were private and helped with the makings of invisibility cloaks apparently. That was neat, about the invisibility cloaks. He had thought about getting one but he would have to purchase one himself since there was no way his parents would buy him one knowing the many perks of owning one.
Oh, activity time. What were they doing again? Trying to feed the creatures? Okay, he could work with that. Getting up, Kirk went to get an armful of fruits and leaves, "What do you think will entice them more Mama Mel? Apricots or Peaches?" Peaches did seem to won some over but maybe some had a lower tolerance? His eyes did happen to catch one at that moment.
Jonas sighed and tried again. This time, he stepped a bit closer. He set the fruit down and then backed away again.
The demiguise slowly walked up and sniffed the fruit. Jonas smiled and the demiguise started to eat the apricot.
"yeah . That's it " Jonas smiled.
Precognitive sight? Sam hadn't known there were types of Sight, or how it worked. It was interesting, and perhaps somewhat reassuring, that it wasn't an ability that could be exploited - for good or ill alike.
But, apologies Professor, Sam was pretty sure that the strengthened laws had done nothing to dissuade people from dealing in demiguise in the darker parts of the street. Maybe less dealing of pelts, and more of live animals. But still, she'd seen it happen. She shouldn't be thinking such thoughts though. She should be making the most of having them here, in the lesson, to interact with.
"You wanna work together?" Of course Dora did. "I'll go get us some fruit." Although maybe not the peach - she didn't really feel like peeling one. Of all the fruits, that'd be one of the options she'd choose to peel last...
Cornelius' mind was refreshed with these facts as the professor went over them. And even though this wasn't the first time heard of the Demiguise's offspring with a ghoul, the boy SHUDDERED and almost GAGGED.
Mate. Offspring. Ghoul. Hidebehinds.

Whoever let that happen was so WRONG.
Shrugging his shoulders off the EWW, Cornelius' green gaze focused on the creatures. This was, as always, a bad time to ever mention what his lovely (not really) grandmother did. If he recalled, Demiguise was one of the key ingredients to the beauty potions she created. Except no one's been able to crack her down - and there was no way family was going to give away family. AND he wasn't supposed to know this. He was just great at snooping around where he shouldn't.
Without an ounce of guilt, Cornelius stood up and went to check out the food options. Would the Demiguise be able to sniff him out? Sense what the matriarch of the family did? Green eyes flickered toward the bunch, well, where the creatures had been before going invisible.
Could they sense it? Sense him?
One way to find out.
Grabbing a parring knife and several loquat - in which he exclaimed, "Prof, you have LOQUAT!" Then proceeded with, "Oh crud, sorry!" at the direction of the demiguise in case he had startled them. Fifteen years old, and he STILL couldn't control his excitement.

Katy tried not to be TOO excited about getting to actually touch and hold a demiguise. And learning how to collect their pelt hair humanely? Was it her BIRTHDAY? Oh... yeah... pretty close, actually.
She grabbed two apricots and a paring knife from the professor's supplies before heading toward the group of demiguises. Would they find her too keen and thus untrustworthy? Or would they prefer someone bold rather than fearful? Time would tell. In the meantime, Katy seated herself primly on her cloak and began to cut the apricot into drippy slices.

Completely oblivious to the look Mel had given her after her answer about demiguises, Stasya had been scribbling notes as quick as she could when Professor Wayland had verified everything they'd mentioned. Even if she'd already known most of it, it was important information. Plus, she'd been a bit distracted by trying to figure out how she'd neglected to notice Derf's arrival. Nothing she could do about that though.
Instead, she'd looked at Emmeline excitedly when they'd been instructed to try and lure a demiguise to them. A real live demiguise. Even before she'd asked if they wanted to work together, she had jumped up to collect a couple apricots, a couple peaches, and a paring knife. She still didn't really trust herself to use her wand for cutting things by herself.
So was anyone going to join her?

Notes, notes and more notes. Shay tried to keep up with everything the professor was saying and she wrote down the key points. More importantly, she watched as he offered food to a demiguise and said demiguise actually sat in the professor's lap. How cool was that? Even better, the students got to feed a demiguise treats, well try to anyway. Were they going to retrieve their hair too? Shay couldn't imagine being allowed to do that. Maybe they would just get to see how it was done.
Now though, it was time to see if she could entice a demiguise with some tasty treats. Eagerly, Shay stood up and went over to the bucket of food. Looking over her choices, she finally decided on a couple of peaches and apricots. After all, she figured she had to keep the demiguise entertained for a while. Shay grabbed a knife and looked for a good spot to get to work.
Sitting down on the ground, Shay tried to look as non threatening as possible. She began to peel a peach, all the while keeping her eyes alert for demiguise activity. She halved the peach, removed the pit and cut a few small chunks. Then she placed two pieces in front of her and one in her open palm. Shay figured it was better to let the creatures approach her. She did not want to frighten them. So for now, she waited.

After the first demiguese, it was a lot easier to feed the same one. He put down another slice of apricot for the little guy.
"Would you want something else?" Jonas asked smiling at the little guy.

Which, they are a far superior creature than we will ever be." He said with a chuckle, hoping no one would get offended by his joke.

Emmeline was beyond excited. They were going to get to feed the demiguise and see them up close! She jumped to her feet as soon as the professor said it was time to start and grabbed some peaches and a knife. She wasn't so good at that cutting spell yet and she didn't want to scare any creatures.
The first year soon plopped down on the ground next to Stasya. She thought it went without saying that they'd work together on this, and maybe call two demiguise over? She'd be happy to get to see only one up close, though. They were such sweet creatures, she could already tell. Emmeline rolled her shoulders back and started slicing one of her peaches with the knife. She was trying to look as small and nonthreatening as possible, see? She shot Stasya a grin as she held a piece of peach out away from her body to try and lure a demiguise over to them. She figured it was better to be pretty quiet so as not to scare them for now, right?

Notes, Skylar was taking them. On the things her peers as said, as well as the lengthy lecture that Professor Wayland had given. It was actually rather fascinating and almost made the fourth year wonder what he had stored for them in the future. With lessons as intriguing as the ones he'd given this year, it gave her high hopes for the future. Set the bar way high.
Also, something he said struck her with keen interest... which was talk about obtaining Demiguise hair in a humane way. Were they going to be obtaining some and if so, what were they going to be doing with it? Making wands or invisibility cloaks would have taken too long for a lesson, wouldn't it have? And to just collect the demiguise hair but not do anything with it, well wouldn't that have been inhumane itself?
Approaching the bucket of food, Skylar perused carefully, trying to determine which food item might be best to attract a demiguise. Everyone seemed to be going for apricots or peaches. As she was deciding, she overheard Wayland telling Cornelius about how Demiguises were far superior creatures than we would ever be and the best way to tell them they would mean no harm was to sit on the ground at their level. Well, if someone didn't know how to stroke an ego, Skylar wasn't sure who did? Did Wayland have a lady friend? Man friend? Because if he didn't, well, she wasn't sure why not because it was clear to her at least, he knew a way with words.
The cacophonous sounds of her classmates cutting their fruit brought the fourth year back to present activity. Luring out a demiguise. After minutes of deliberating which one, Skylar grabbed a bamboo leaf without even bothering to consult her mental pro or con leaf. She then went to sit on the edge of the perimeter, holding the bamboo leaf still as could be and waited. Hopefully it was quiet enough and away from the noise of her peers that the demiguise wouldn't see her as threatening, would it? Wayland had said to be on their level, which she was doing....

Kirk sat back and listened to the answers from his peers and the lecture from the Professor. It was a bit to take in, but Kirk was good at getting the jist of things. Plus it helped having a smart girlfriend next to him as he grinned at Mel. Demiguises were private and helped with the makings of invisibility cloaks apparently. That was neat, about the invisibility cloaks. He had thought about getting one but he would have to purchase one himself since there was no way his parents would buy him one knowing the many perks of owning one.
Oh, activity time. What were they doing again? Trying to feed the creatures? Okay, he could work with that. Getting up, Kirk went to get an armful of fruits and leaves, "What do you think will entice them more Mama Mel? Apricots or Peaches?" Peaches did seem to won some over but maybe some had a lower tolerance? His eyes did happen to catch one at that moment.
Melbourne grinned at Professor Wayland when he commented on how she had brought up the demiguise had precognitive site. Sure, others had brought that up but it didn’t make her feel any less informed…that, and she knew that they were at least somewhat related to the hidebehind and ghouls…sure, sure it wasn’t closely related but that had simply been an issue with word choice.
Turning her attention back to the mission at hand Mel almost missed the smile. Still, when Kirk smiled at her with that smile it was all she could do not to return him an almost dopy smile. His smile just always made her want to smile, it was infectious.
”Oh…hmm why don’t we try a few of them?” Mel asked as she carefully got up and headed to the bucket with him. ”oooooh! Why don’t we try peaches?...i always thought they had more of a scent to them…y’know?” Mel offered Kirk with a grin as she picked up one of the pairing knives and carefully dragging the edge of the knife against the skin of her thumb at an angle. The electric feeling that tingled in her hand and neck was good, it wouldn’t damage the fruit…so that was good. Shifting the knife so it faced away from everyone and pointed at the ground she turned her attention to Kirk once more. ”should we also get some bamboo and other leaves?” she asked with a kind smile. Really, a part of her just wanted to eat the food herself…even the bamboo was delicious when used in soups.

Eyeing the demiguise in the professor's lap, a saying crossed his mind. If you can't beat them, join them. Of course, he wasn't planning on beating anyone. But the message still stood. If the demiguise were apprehensive to approach them, and they trusted Professor Wayland, then why not use the older man as a beacon?
Cornelius did just that. He sat across the professor, not to close, and crossed his long legs. A nice distance to make Cornelius seem as a friend. "Do you think I may snack on one?" he asked the professor. Maybe that'll help gain the creature's trust too. Like, Heeeeey, I'm eating it too, so it's not poisonous! Did the demiguise even have the sense of tampered food?
Eh. He'd see then.
Using the parring knife, Cornelius cut a wedge of the Laquot and set it in front of him, the corner of his eyes catching a shift on the ground. There it was. A demiguise had spotted him.
Glancing up briefly, the fifteen year old smirked at the professor's statement about demiguise being far superior creatures. Cornelius disagreed. His mum, the great Ursulla Baltazar, has always reminded him wizards were the IT kind. The IT species. But he kept quiet. A pair of eyes were on him and he was trying to lure it towards him.

When he had all the eyes on him, including the large orb like eyes of the Demiguise, he asked, "How do you think Demiguise hair could be harvested? You can give me the inhumane answers as well as humane ideas." He wouldn't judge them. It was a fact that despite all of the animal activism, there were still black markets that endangered the lives of creatures in defiance of the laws made to protect them.

Katy's hands were still dripping in apricot juice, and it didn't seem like any demiguise was ever going to show an interest in her offering, but she continued to hold them out in front of her. Sort of stupidly, really, like something would change if she just kept doing nothing long enough.
The professor was talking again, and Katy was tempted to ignore him in favor of sitting still, but this was something she was curious about herself. "I think natural shedding, sir, especially if the demiguise are semi-tame or kept as pets. It's not as much hair as taking their hide, but it's so much more humane and the hair is just as good. You could probably brush or curry them to get the loose undercoat."
And then, perhaps because she'd stopped staring SO HARD at where she thought the demiguises must be, there was the appearance of a small hand snatching a slice of apricot from her hand. Success!
To lure a demiguise.. Huh. Etta noted down what the professor said carefully, since she would need them for her OWLs preparations. Thinking about her exams, she was already starting to get a headache. The more she studied.. the less she felt prepared, which was really weird if one thought about it. Anyway.. she turned to look at the creatures for a long moment. They were supposed to be harmless but she still felt a tad bit nervous. She fidgeted with the ends of her hair anxiously before she stood up and headed over to look at the fruit options for the demiguise. She decided to go with an apricot so she picked one up, cut it into thin slices and slowly approached one of the creatures with fruit in her hand, taking small steps, making sure not to make any sudden movements so as not to scare off the creatures. She stood a few steps away from the creature, studying it for a second or two. It looked a little smaller than it's companions.. and maybe a little cuter too.
Just as the professor had said earlier, she sat down on the ground and eyed it, hoping the demiguise would be half-friendly. She kept watching before finally moving a little bit closer extending a piece of fruit with her hand. Come on.. .. and waited.. and she kept waiting patiently. Her hand was starting to hurt at this point. Why was the demiguise so hesitant? But just when she was about to give up, the creature quickly snatched the piece from her hand. HUH. Awesome! She beamed happily as the creature munched on the apricot before her attention turned towards the professor.
"Professor, just as Katy mentioned, I'd guess natural shedding as well. It would obviously be more humane, right? Etta turned to look at the demiguise again, offering another piece of fruit.

As Emmeline had joined her in her position seated on the ground, Stasya had nearly pointed out she hadn’t needed to get more fruit or anything. She still had an extra knife, and plenty of fruit. Even counting the apricot she’d already started carefully slicing. Trying to look as unthreatening as possible, but then she felt like she knew how to treat creatures. Even the unicorns had started to trust her, after all, before they’d gotten scared away. All she had to do was wait, and she completely believed that a demiguise would approach. She hadn’t even said anything to her best friend, not wanting to risk scaring any of the creatures with her voice.
It felt weird holding out the slice of fruit to nobody in particular, but she was trying to be patient. After a moment, she laid the slice down on the ground a foot or so away from herself, before carefully cutting off another slice. She’d kept her eyes on the first slice of apricot though, noticing when an invisible hand suddenly reached out to take it, and quietly held out the second slice. Come on little demiguise, she thought, turning to look as Professor Wayland asked a question.
She refused to think about inhumane methods. “Maybe looking for brush or something the hair might get caught on?,” she suggested instead, since Katy and Etta had already mentioned shedding and brushing. Either that or a haircut. Nothing that would hurt the poor demiguise, and she’d turned back in time to see a hand taking the apricot slice from hers. Hi little demiguise. She had more fruit if they wanted some.

Notes. As soon as the hot professor started talking, Noelle was taking notes. Everything he was saying was going in her little notebook. Demiguise were so cool. And Phoenix's early this term? It was a wonder why she had a little professor!crush on him. He was amazing!
Ahem. Corny. Hush.
Noelle nudged him and blushed redder when he mentioned the professor. "Shhhhh" She said in a hushed whisper.
More notes.
Time to lure a demiguise. Noelle put her notebook aside and stood up from the hay bale, brushing off the straw attached to her clothes. She headed over to the fruit and grabbed a peach. Heading over to one of the demiguise, she got close when she heard a little commotion. Corny. Of course.
"Hey there. Arent you beautiful?" Noelle said sweetly to the demiguise a little in front of her. She held out the peach in a gentle fashion. "Want some peach? They are good. Ill share. You can have one, and Ill have one." The demiguise inched closer, its big eyes looking at her questionably. "Its okay." Noelle said urging him on with a big smile.
The demiguise grabbed the peach just at the professor started speaking to the class again.
"What about trimming their hair? If they'll let you, and its not too close. " She hated thinking about someone harming and... offing one of these precious creatures.

CoMC Lesson 2: Demiguise Do's

You may chose what ever you want to feed them. Your task is to entice the creatures to sit near you and eat the food you give them. They don't have to necessarily sit in your lap, the only reason that was possible for Tristan is because these creatures know him well. As stated you can do this in pairs or individually. This activity will carry over to our main activity, so make sure you are able to keep the creature near you.
