It was a lovely September morning, not too hot and not too cold. A perfect day for this lesson! Tristan had set up shop in an empty pasture in front of the barn. He set out bales of hay in a semi circle for the students to sit on, and a black board in front of the semi circle. There was not one clue as to what creature they would be working with today. He wanted it to be a surprise.
There was a throne fashioned out of hay bales, and on it sat Professor Wayland with a grin on his face. Hey if he was going to be waiting for students to arrive he might as well be comfortable. He took a sip of his Chai Tea from his mug, and sat on his hay throne waiting for his students to make their appearance.
OOC: Welcome to the first CoMC Lesson of the term! Though this is our first lesson together, this is not the first CoMC lesson of the year, so please keep that in mind! Please make sure you take a gander at the CoMC Rules while waiting. Class will start in 24 hours. Class has begun so please jump in and join us!
Kyle smiled brightly as the girl approached him. "I'd love to work together. I'm Kyle." He laid the pictures out on his hay bale, putting them in order. "I know the chick is first, and the really bald one is last... Then 2 and 4 go together, and 3 and 1 go together. I think I've got the order right, but I'm not certain."
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Mason watched, with a bit of jealousy in his eyes as Ash took flight and went to a Gryffindor. The jealousy did not fade away when the bird flew back to the Professor after a quick whistle like it was the easiest thing to do. Tame a phoenix, not whistling, although whistling could be difficult to for some people... He wanted a phoenix and he wanted one now.
But like always, Mason never actually said his thoughts out loud, which was a smart move because he would have gotten in trouble a lot of he had and focused on the activity next. He was glad they could work alone for this part as well as he didn't like working in pairs or in groups and after he had gotten his six cards the Ravenclaw turned his back to the class and placed the cards in front of him on the ground.
As he checked them, it was obvious that card number six was the beginning of the phoenix life cycle. He grabbed his notebook and wrote down 6. He placed the number six card at the beginning and studied the next five cards. The next one was picture number two. The phoenix wasn't in full beauty yet which was picture number four so he grabbed the two cards and placed them next to each other. He wrote down the 2 and 4 next to the 6. He was pretty sure that even a magnificent bird like a phoenix would not become even more beautiful cause that would be really unfair wouldn't it? And he was right when he checked the next few cards. They were all looking like the bird got older and older. He held up two pictures again, one was number five and the other was number one. Judging by the tail on number one, it still had some feathers left whereas the tail on number five had none, poor creature seemed to be gagging as well and Mason's dark brown eyes went to Ash for a moment, feeling sorry that that creature had to suffer through this pain and loss everytime when it had to be reborn.
Taking his eyes away from the bird, Mason picked number two and placed it next to his other cards. It was then that he noticed that picture number three looked more healthier than picture number two and he realised that this card should have been in this place as the phoenix, although looking slightly dull, it hadn't lost his feathers yet. So he corrected his mistake and placed the number three card next to the four card and the Ravenclaw looked down at his cards and nodded his head. Got it.

Personally, Olivia felt the professor wasn't understanding what she'd said at all. "Sir, I didn't mean constantly in that way. Obviously it would have years of life in between it's rebirth and burning day." Obviously. These creatures were real, living beings and not like one of those muggle gifs that replayed in seconds. Perhaps her wording had been off. Words could be difficult for her at times. "I meant it's cruel to have to live through so many rebirths and burning days. Sure, they may hardly notice as it's their way of life...but I suppose the only way I can properly explain what I mean is with a comparison." Guh, WORDS... "If this were to happen in the human respect, it would be a painful life cycle to repeat. We would have to go through the process of being an infant, and then living through puberty, and then to adult, and finally to being an elderly individual. With creaky joints, disease, sickness... You know what I mean?" Olivia hadn't meant to ramble or seem rude, but she'd gotten into this discussion, and it was important to her that he see her point. She was painfully Gryffindor, okay? This mentality couldn't be helped. "Having to relive 'life' and remembering all the times that had come before...would be an overwhelming responsibility."... And cruel.
Okay, she was shutting up now. Thank you, Professor Wayland, for hearing us out.
Right... so about this mini activity...
Burying her face down into her notebook, because she hadn't meant to seem reproachful of the professor, Olivia wrote out a few things...before taking a full gander at the provided photographs. Did everyone else see photograph 5? How PAINFUL...did that look? The Gryffindor found herself greatly saddened by the diminished state of the phoenix pictured. It was frail and suffering. Sure, this creature was used to reliving it's life cycle, but it hurt her heart to have to see it in that way; so plainly photographed there for their educational purposes. Poor thing. No, she wanted to see them as they were in photograph 4; full of life and vitality. Beautiful and majestic.
She also found her desire for meat and poultry greatly lessened... There would be some looking into the vegan thing after class. Were any of the current professors vegan? Would she be able to reach out to someone for more information?

Shay was busy scribbling notes on her parchment, as the professor spoke. She really found the phoenix to be a fascinating animal. It was so.......different, unique in so many ways that she couldn't help but want to learn more.
The professor's second question was really several questions rolled into one. Most of them were answered rather quickly. One however, was more a matter of opinion than anything else. Shay raised her hand to tackle that particular question. "I think that the phoenix is not really immortal, in the true sense of the word. When you are immortal, you never die. The phoenix dies many deaths, but is reborn again each time. It starts its life over.......again and again and yet, it is still the same creature.". The more she talked, the more confusing Shay's answer seemed to become. She decided to leave it at that.
Anyway, it was activity time so Shay listened to their assignment. Taking out a fresh sheet of parchment, Shay wrote her identifying information. Then she spread the pictures out in front of her. She looked from one to the other, trying to work out the correct sequence. It took her a moment, but eventually things seemed to become clear. The phoenix rises from the ashes, so clearly the sooty little chick was the first in the series. Then the bird got prettier and prettier, finally reaching its beauty peak.
What goes up must come down. The next few pictures showed the phoenix going from a slight loss of beauty to mangier to mangiest. That poor, bald, sickly looking creature in picture five was truly a sad sight. Shay wasn't sure that rebirth was worth going through those horrible looking states. But then humans pretty much went through the same thing........minus the rebirth. Maybe the transition between stages was a little longer and smoother, but there were stages nonetheless.
Once she had finished writing, Shay put down her quill and waited for further instructions.

Etta studied all the pictures, thinking this activity was rather easy. More easy than she had assumed anyway. She started with the picture that had number one on the back and carefully looked at it, ready to take notes. It looked weak and had lost a lot of it's feathers. Oooookay. She stared at it for a while longer before turning to the next picture. Well.. the Phoenix looked more like itself. Maybe it hadn't reached it's full height of beauty yet but it was getting there. Or maybe she was wrong.
Moving on to picture three. Here, again, the bird seemed to have lost feathers but not as much as the bird in the earlier picture. It was slowly getting to the stage of losing all it's feathers though. It didn't look nearly as dull. She scribbled on her parchment before looking at the next picture. Ooh, this looked like a proper Phoenix. A bird that was at it's height of strength and beauty. How beautiful.
Right, next one. Etta frowned, staring at the condition of the poor creature. It seemed to have lost practically all of its feathers and looked extremely weak. She knew it was going to be re-born soon but still! It hurt to look at it. She quickly moved on to the last picture, the frown on her face disappearing. A baby Phoenix! How cute. She wrote down the last of her thoughts on the parchment. Now that she had these for reference.. Etta pulled out another parchment and started to jot down what was required.

Skylar had been staring at the remaining four cards, trying to place them in order. It really shouldn't be this hard or complicated, but somehow she was making out to be. Okay, so her first card, Ash was just reborn, which meant next shouldn't be at peak beauty, so picture two? Or no wait, maybe the no feathers come before beauty? But if that was the case, then what came next? Number one?
Gah, maybe she should have asked for someone to work with. But it was just pictures; it shouldn't have been this difficult to sort.
Okay, so picture 6 was definitely first. Then probably picture two, then it reaches peak beauty, obviously picture four. Which meant that picture three came next, where the phoenix lost a few feathers, but not a whole lot. And then picture one, because that was where more feathers were lost. And finally picture five, because it was about to die, except not really die, because phoenixes didn't really die. Or no wait... was that??
The fourth year stared at her scribbles, frowning and wondering how completely wrong she was, or right. And simultaneously wondering what they were going to next? Simulate flying like a phoenix? Because she could stand for flying right about now.

Tristan listened carefully as the Gryffindor explained her thoughts more thoroughly. He nodded his head as she spoke. He wanted to let her explain completely what she meant. "Right, okay, I understand what you are saying. You feel it would be a cruel life cycle to have to go through all of that repeatedly. Okay, I do agree with you there, it is very cruel but for them...that is just life. Though I will say, after rebirth it takes them about a week to go from a chick to the size Ash is now. So their growth rate after the burn day is rather quick. Getting to their peak of beauty takes anywhere from 6 months to a year and they stay in that state until they start to age, which could be many years. So, really it isn't as hard on them as you think. They learn new things in each life cycle, though they are the same creature in soul and mind." He paused giving Ash a good rub, "So I understand how you could feel that it would be a cruel way for them to live, but they don't see it that way...because it is just life for them." He hoped she understood....and hoped he wasn't too long winded on the subject....though he probably was.

Tristan nodded listening to the young woman. "The body itself is not immortal, but what about the soul, Shay? Ash, as I said before, just had a burn day about a month before school started, but he is still loyal to me AND is the exact same personality wise as he was before his burn day." He paused, "Ponder on that...," he said with a wink.
Tristan walked around through the pairs and individual students alike, watching them make their decisions. Ash was intently watching them all as well. In fact, he rustled his warm, golden tail feathers over Abey and Derfael's heads as Tristan walked past, almost as if he was brushing their hair with his tail. He was such a tease.
"You have about 10 minutes to finish up before we move on, everyone!" Tristan called out. With a flick of his wand, a single hay bale rolled it's way towards the blackboard, stopping just under it. Everyone seemed to be working very diligently. "If you have finished, go ahead and place your papers on the bale of hay under the blackboard, and if you feel so inclined, maybe help someone that is struggling." He said with a small smile.

He shook his head chuckling as the bird fluttered over to him and landed on his shoulder. He gave Ash another treat before speaking to the class.
"Now, and this is my opinion on the immortality question, I believe these beautiful creatures have Immortal souls, and the magical ability to regenerate their failing bodies. Many studies have been started, but never finished about these birds because they are able to regenerate. Also, once their owners die, as I said before, most Phoenixes go off on their own to live an independent live because they are so loyal to that one owner. So I feel, yes they have a starting birth...but they never truly die." He paused to let the students think about that for a moment before saying, "All of your opinions could be correct, but we may never truly know for sure." He grinned.
"Now it is time for an activity. Each of you are going to be given six different images of six very different looking Phoenixes. What you must do is, look at those images and determine the correct phase of life they are in, and then write down on a piece of parchment the numbers of the pictures on the back in age order from youngest to oldest." He hoped that made sense..., "So when you write it down, just write down the number of the pictures. Picture one, picture 4, etc. Does everyone understand?" He sure hoped so. "Alright...you may work with a partner if you would like, and be sure to turn in your parchment when you are done." With a flick of his wand each student was given 6 different wizarding pictures.
The picture with the number 1 on the back had an image of a Phoenix that's plumage is very dull, has lost part of its tail feathers and a lot of its body feathers, and has dull black eyes. Occasionally, it looks as if it's gagging. Picture 2 was a picture of Ash in his current state, not completely at his peak of beauty but almost there. Picture 3 was of another Phoenix who's plumage is slightly dull and is losing feathers but not too many to be noticeable. It rarely makes a gagging motion. Picture 4 was of another Phoenix who was at it's Peak of beauty and a bit larger than Ash. Picture 5 was of a Phoenix that had no feathers whatsoever, very dull eyes, and was constantly gagging. Picture 6 was of a Phoenix chick that had just been reborn from the ashes; Still covered in soot, without many feathers at all, but super cute.
"If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. You may begin!" Tristan wandered about watching the students progress.
Hearing that they could partner up, Brent wandered over to Skylar and quickly noted that she'd already gotten some answers down on parchment. "Hey, partner," he said, volunteering himself as her partner, "got any answers I can copy?" He wouldn't tell her that he was joking. He'd let her figure that out herself. He took out a piece of parchment and a quill and got to work.
"..." Duuuude. That phoenix is picture number one had just had it. He shook his head at it. It looked pitiful. He looked from picture two to Ash and then back again. Hmm... Picture three looked like it kind of came in between pictures one and two. That phoenix was just in between a good life and...well, burning to death. The phoenix in picture four looked really cool, but the one in number five just looked like another pitiful bird. Oh, and look at that little cutie in number six! Okay, this should be easy.

And then he freed Derf from his clutches. Okay, heart rate steadily getting back to normal.
... It was only then that Abey realised he had not been listening to a word that the professor had been saying while he had been introducing the activity. That wasn't TOO much of a problem though of course actually; all Abey needed to do was apply a bit of logic and guesswork to figure out that they were supposed to be working out what order the pictures went in, to do with how they had a tendency to get old and haggard and burst into flames.
"Soooooo..." he scanned through the pictures, occasionally looking up at the real phoenix in the vicinity as though to compare, or to see how close to a burning day THAT one was. Before long, he grabbed the last one, with the baby baby baby phoenix, and declared, "This one's first. I think." Technically it could have also been last depending on where you said the cycle started, but Abey didn't know if they were meant to be ordering them by age or just by regular order, and he didn't want to end up overcomplicating the matter for his poor brain by going into all the technicalities actually.
Okay. EASY. Two easiest ones, done.
IT'S OKAY!
Well, now that it was official that Abey had forgiven him Derf could remember how to breathe again and they could finish this mini activity of sorts up easy peasy. Because really...this WAS easy peasy. Almost as easy as painting by numbers. Well, okay...maybe for MOST people painting by numbers was easy but it was actually a little difficult for the Hufflepuff for reasons. So, actually, this WAS easier than painting by numbers.
Uuuuh...what were they doing again? OH RIGHT PICTURES!
"Kinda makes-s-s you wonder...which came first...the phoenix or the Burning Day," he mused. Although that WAS a serious question. They had been discussing the phoenix and its ability to be reborn but nothing on their actual hatchings. Was that because it was super rare and complicated? The sort of talk that students ought not to know? He knew how to hatch a basilisk...so it only seemed fair to know how to hatch a phoenix, you know? "PROFES-S-SSOR!" Derf asked, hand shooting up into the air juuuuuuuuuust as Ash's tail petted his head.
HOLY MOLEY GUACAMOLE! IT WAS LIKE BEING TOUCHED BY A PROFESSIONAL QUIDDITCH PLAYER!
Tugging eagerly on Abey's robes (BECAUSE HAD HE FELT IT AND SEEN IT TOO?!) he was briefly distracted by his inquiry. Until he looked back at the photographs that is. Order and such.
"Do phoenix have a mating dance?" he began. Since most fowl DID have that sort of thing to attract a mate and such. Mate...Abey was his mate. Maybe he should come up with a dance on top of a secret handshake with Abey? "I mean...how are phoenix created in the first place? Special ashes needed to hatch the first ever phoenix? When was that? HOW did the first phoenix come to be?" Especially considering they were rather solitary creatures, becoming loyal to one and only one witch or wizard in cases of domestication and all.
Bright blue eyes EAGER for answers, quickly arranged another picture in the correct order (first picture moving into the fifth position) - him working from the end of a phoenix's cycle and Abey clearly from the start so that they would meet in the middle...which worked out perfectly since there would be ONE left over in the middle. It was like their friendship and pairing up in lessons was MEANT to be - and waaaaaaaaaaited.
Oh yeah. Still TOTALLY eyeing you Cameron. Sort of. There was a phoenix present and all.

Emmeline was watching Ash so intently that she jumped when the cards ended up in her hands somehow. What? She glanced down at them and guessed what they had to do (since she hadn't paid much attention): put the pictures in order. Shouldn't be too hard, it just had to go from baby to old-looking, right?
She spread the pictures out across the hay bale next to her and pulled out a piece of parchment to write her answers on.
The picture with the 1 on it looked pretty old and sickly to her. Emmeline felt sorry for any creature that had to live like that, but at least phoenixes got to be reborn! She glanced from the pictures to Ash, trying to will him to come over and let her pet him. Couldn't he see she wanted to be friends? She knew Professor Wayland was Ash's BEST friend, but the creature could have other friends too, right? Anyway the picture 1 was clearly a phoenix at the (temporary) end of his life. She wished all creatures could live forever! Raising her hand this time, Emmeline asked: "Professor sir, do ALL magical creatures live for a long time? Like more than a hundred years? Not cats and stuff, but magical ones?" She hoped so. She knew creatures like owls and cats sadly did not live so long as that, but magical creatures were clearly different. Maybe. Hopefully!
What were they supposed to be doing again? She was still mostly staring at Ash with crup-like eyes mostly, even while she was talking to the professor. But that reminded her of something... The activity!
Emmeline stared resolutely down at the pictures and her parchment. This was the ONE class she wanted to do really, really well in, so she knew she couldn't afford distractions even if they came in the beautiful, elegant, majestic phoenix and she should NOT be dwelling on how cool it was to have a real-live phoenix here and...
Pictures. Oops, she should have looked carefully at ALL of the pictures before she had hastily written down picture 1 as the last stage, because one of these pictures looked even worse. That poor thing... She decided that 5 must be the REAL last stage, and so picture 1 needed to move up one spot. Picture 6 HAD to be the first stage though, because it was a cute little baby and there weren't any other baby pictures here.
The other pictures were more tricky. Emmeline rearranged the pictures on the hay bale to reflect her answers on the parchment. Of the three remaining pictures, there was one that looked just a liiiiiiittle worse than the other two, because he was losing feathers. She decided that he must be the fourth stage because he wasn't as pretty as the other unassigned pictures, but he wasn't as unhealthy looking as the last two stages' pictures were. So the fourth stage belonged to picture 3. Emmeline scribbled this down a little triumphantly, because this made sense to her and she was hoping that she really understood stuff about creatures like she thought she did. Not that that all hinged on this activity, but it kind of felt like it did in the moment. She didn't want to be stupid in this class or bad at it.
So only pictures 2 and 4 left unassigned. Emmeline examined them closely and compared them to the REAL Ash. She thought picture 2 looked closest to him in his current state, but the living Ash was so beautiful that she thought he must be in the greatest health. So she wrote that down and was about to hand in her parchment when she noticed that there was a slight difference between 2 and 4 that she hadn't spotted yet. The phoenix in picture 4 was just slightly bigger than real-life Ash. She needed to swap the order of those pictures on her parchment, then. This made her happy because if the real Ash was in picture 2 and she was right that he was in stage 2, then he was pretty YOUNG. That was good, because she didn't like the idea of Ash being sick or suffering like the later stages suggested.
Feeling fairly confident in her answers, Emmeline marched up to the hay bale under the blackboard and turned her parchment in and then bounced back to her seat.

She was paying attention. There was no way Stasya wouldn’t have been paying attention in CoMC class, or at least she wasn’t going to admit that she’d gotten a bit distracted by Ash and all the phoenix facts she knew and everything being said and thoughts about if Dobby was okay in the barn or if he would have wanted her to try to break him out so he could be out here with everyone. It was a lot, but she was totally paying attention. Or maybe watching as Ash had begun flying again, after his stop off over by Mel, and going back to Professor Wayland before teasing Derf and Abey. She hadn’t missed the little drama with Liv, either, looking at the older girl with wide eyes before she’d scrambled to locate the pictures that had been dropped off for her to finish the activity. Seeing as they had sort of fallen to the side a little while she’d been watching everything else.
Youngest to oldest. It sounded easy enough, so she hardly minded the fact she was apparently working on her own. Besides, it was creatures. She was in her element, really. It didn’t hurt that she’d picked up a little hint from what Professor Wayland had told Liv, either. It was almost easy to rearrange her stack of pictures before she started scribbling her answer onto a piece of parchment.

Since she hadn’t been working with anyone, she didn’t really have anyone to check her order with but she’d looked over at the parchments of the people closest to her as she’d stood up to bring hers up to the haybale. Plus, she’d let her eyes flicker over to Ash again while she’d been delivering her work and just continuing to watch the phoenix her entire walk back to her own haybale. Derf had some really interesting questions too. How was the first phoenix created and how were baby phoenixes born? Obviously babies existed.

Sam had been just a little entranced by Ash, and had momentarily forgotten she was in class as she let her mind wander through phoenix related thoughts. How cool was it to fly and to heal! But how did it feel to be re-born? Was it exciting, the feeling of growth and getting stronger? Or did it reiterate the loneliness of losing friends that didn't have that same ability?
It wasn't until her bestie poked her that Sam snapped out of it and back to the matter at hand. Which involved pictures, apparently. "We're putting them in order?" she confirmed, a sheepish look at the admission she hadn't been paying attention. "Well that one goes first," she said, pointing to the little chick in picture 6, and moving it to between them on the hay bale. "And that one doesn't look healthy at all, so I reckon that's got to go last." She moved picture 5 to the opposite end of the hay bale, before changing her mind, and putting it at an angle before the chick, as if it was at the 10 o'clock position. "It shouldn't be represented linearly," she explained, before the Gryffindor could say anything. A circle was much more sensible.
And picture 4 was stunning. That had to be at it's best. So somewhere around the middle? She put it down at 6 o'clock for now. "What have you got?"
...Burned by their own flames, though...Which made Lucy wonder if they could survive fire. If their fire is different. If they could survive fiendfyre....
Or, even, if they did get hurt, the healing powers from their tear ducts would save them regardless.......
Anyway, she watched the Phoenix and then turned her attention to the pictures that appeared before her. First she layed them out in the order she thought, debated between the last two stages, then finally settled on an order and wrote it down.

She smiled over at Teddy's work, comparing answers. And, of course, she'd let Teddy look over at her's before handing it in.

As Professor Wayland explained about the activity, the Gryffindor groaned slightly. So they were not going to handle a phoenix today? Ah, okay then. Ava took a look at the pictures that the Professor had given. Well, it was not that difficult to determine the youngest and oldest picture. The first one should be the chick because it had the most different look among all of them. While the second one... Ah, probably the picture #2.
Moving on to the other pictures. Okay, picture #4 should be the next because it was the most gorgeous phoenix look. And that means... two more pictures left. Ava thought that the picture #1 and #3 looked similar and it's quite difficult to differ between them. She's just going to decide that picture #1 would be on the next by random guess while picture #3 would come next. And the last one was the picture of no-feather ugly phoenix. the Okay, done! Now Ava wrote her guesses on a parchment.

As Sully got a little close she noticed he was a little shorter, he must be younger! Not that that was a big deal, who cared, just an observation.
"Nice to meet you Kyle" She added and then turned toward their work. "Did you want to fill out the parchment or should I?" She added and she took a long gander at the pictures.
"I agree about the chick and the burning day... but I'm not so sure about the middle." She was trying to figure it all out, and not argue ... who knows she wasn't good with creatures so maybe she was wrong to. "Doesn't it look like 3 and 4 could go together?"

"Hmm...I don't know. How's this look?" he asked her. "Something doesn't look right..."
Skylar had been lost in her own thoughts, barely heard Professor Wayland when he said if they were finished they could place their parchments on the bale under the blackboard, when she heard an all too familiar voice break her reverie. Glancing up at his adorable face, Skylar smiled in amusement when he asked to copy her answers. "Hmm, aren't I supposed to be copying yours?" He was older and all.
Watching him a moment, work out the pictures on his own, when he handed his parchment, she took it and eyed it suspiciously. "Probably because picture two should be closer to the beginning. See, Ash is almost at that peak of beauty, so how could it be after the beauty peak and when he starts to lose feathers." Okay, so maybe he should copy her answers, since it seemed she couldn't trust his work.

Kyle nodded. "Yeah... I think 4 goes before 3 though. 3 looks like it's starting to lose it's feathers a little..." He shifted them around, so that it was 6, 2, 4, 3, 1, 5. "There. How does that look to you?"

Awww look at all these pictures of phoenixes! It was sad looking at the older ones though, knowing that they were about to die - but not TOO sad. He was a phoenix after all, he'd be fine. Kane wondered if it hurt. He imagined it did a little bit - you were bursting in to FLAMES after all.
Well, picture six was obviously first - so he scribbled that on the back of the picture. After that, hmmm...then picture two probably. He was getting to adulthood but not QUITE there. Then he was going to go ahead and assume that four was next. He continued to label each one as he went along. Three looked like he was starting to get up there in years, so he obviously came next. So then...it was number one, since he looked terrible but not nearly as terrible as number five, which was obviously right before the death phase.
Well that had been easy! He smiled and laid out his correctly labeled cards before waiting for the next bit of the lesson to start.

Olivia paused and took a while to gaze at the photos. Alright. Which one belonged where?
Picture 6 had to be first as it was a phoenix chick that had just been reborn from the ashes. She pulled herself away from the photo. Wow. The phoenix was much cuter than what she expected it to be. She expected it to look like a plucked duck or turkey or chicken which didn't seem like a very nice thing to look at.
The tough part was choosing the next picture. Picture 1 and 5 looked sort of sad to her. It looked as if the creature's body was beginning to fail so she assumed that these photos were taken towards the end of its life cycle. Thus Picture 2 seemed as if the creature was about to grow more. She jotted this one down as the second option, then she focused her attention on pictures 3 and 4. Picture 4 was a photo of a phoenix who looked a little bit larger than the phoenix in Picture 2 and was beautiful. This one had to follow next. Then she Picture 3 had to be next as it seemed as if the phoenix had started to lose its feathers. Then Picture 1 and then finally Picture 5.

Now Olly's attention turned to the pictures he was given. The phoenixes in the pictures were in various states of disarray. He could tell that some of them were much healthier than the others. Olly's eyes stayed on picture two and picture four a bit longer than the others. Those were the phoenixes that he would most like to paint, and probably would paint after this lesson was over. Of course painting with a model right there was a lot easier. Maybe he would have to visit Professor Wayland some time, if not just to paint his beautiful bird.
Olly glanced over at Henry and Char, wondering if they might want to work with him. But they were obviously going to work together and he wasn't sure how large groups were allowed to be. So he decided to just work by himself for now and check in with them if he couldn't figure it out. Luckily the activity didn't seem too difficult. He started by writing Picture six on his parchment first. That phoenix had just been reborn so it was clearly still in the earliest stage. Olly laid the rest of them out in front of him, newest to oldest, and then wrote it on his parchment.
Liv loved Professor Wayland's opinion on the definition of immortality: Phoenixes were beautiful creatures with beautiful souls. Regeneration was the one thing that wowed her.
She was very excited about the activity. She was given six pictures of phoenixes. None of them looked like Fawkes!
Kyle nodded. "Yeah... I think 4 goes before 3 though. 3 looks like it's starting to lose it's feathers a little..." He shifted them around, so that it was 6, 2, 4, 3, 1, 5. "There. How does that look to you?"
"Sounds good!" Sully smiled a little and wrote her name down on the parchment as well. "Thanks for working with me Kyle!" Well that was easy! Hopefully they had it right!!
