They had it right. He was sure of it. |
It bothered Henry just a bit that the professor didn't really know whether or not phoenixes died. Certainly someone would know? An expert in the field? He wasn't completely sure he bought into the idea of true immortality anyway, but whether he did or not, there should be a way to find out. It also seemed a waste that their ashes had zero magical properties. Like none at all. But just because he thought something should be true did not make it so. Anyway. He had moved on from thinking about that as talk moved to an activity. It was not nearly as hands-on as he would have liked, but it would hold his attention for long enough. And it did not seem like an activity that really required a partner, but what Henry took from that was that he could talk to Char without getting in trouble. He spread out his six cards on his lap and looked them over. Youngest to oldest? He studied them for a moment before pulling out a piece of parchment. "This one looks like it was just born.. or reborn?" He mentioned aloud but more to Charlotte as he pointed to the number six photograph. "But how do we know it's not after this one's burning day?" he asked, pointing to the fifth one who obviously looked like it was ready to burn. Clearly he was overthinking it and decided that the sixth one must be the first one, and he rearranged things to set that one first. "And then, these two.." He moved the pictures numbered two and four next, since they were clearly not of a phoenix getting ready for burning day. Some parts of the others were maybe a little more subtle, but.. he noticed the bird gagging at least periodically, which was slightly unnerving. But that's what they did when they prepared to be reborn, right? |
Oh, under the blackboard. Jessa undid her legs, pulling herself to a standing position with a small stretch. It was funny how you didn't really know you were feeling cramped until you finally released all that pressure. The young girl shook at her legs a bit before grabbing her parchment and making her way up to the hale of bay by the blackboard. Even standing up there, her eyes never left the Phoenix. By now she'd come to terms with the fact the bird would remain in tact and that it'd be quite a while before it burned again but the many possibilities still danced around her head, bringing a subtle spark to those deep blue eyes. She had to snap out of it, either that or make up her mind to add that to her request when she saw the Professor in his office after--because yes, she hadn't forgotten she wanted to have a word with him. Finally, the 13 year old managed to pry her eyes off the phoenix and went to retake her seat, ready for the main activity whenever it came. |
Main Activity! SPOILER!!: Derf! Tristan quietly made his way back towards the blackboard, looking at his watch as he made his way. The really had to move on if they were going to have enough time to get through this next bit...which so many of them had been waiting for. "Alright, please finish up and turn in your parchments. We are going to move on to the final activity." He paused and a huge grin spread across his face. "Many of you have been mercilessly begging me to touch or pet Ash, but I am going to let you go a little further." He paused for dramatic effect. "I am going to let each of you take a ride on his tail." He grinned knowing many of them would be very excited for this news. "But first some rules." With a flick of his wand the previous words on the board melded into new words. It read: Quote:
"Alright....who wants to go first?" He grinned as Ash cooed OOC: Alrighty! So I saved the best for last lol Go ahead and RP that you are taking your turn, we don't have to do this one at a time. Please don't have them falling anywhere other than the air bag, because Ash knows what route to take!! Also, please don't RP the thoughts of Ash. You may RP his actions, (ex: I gently gripped the birds tail and he immediately took flight. He flapped his scarlet wings, and sang as we flew.) but not his thoughts. There is no post limit, so please post as much as you would like! But most importantly, HAVE FUN!! :) If you have any questions for the professor title your post and we will answer as soon as possible! You have the rest of class to Fly with the Phoenix! Class will end at 11:59 pm EST on May 14th! |
They would be flying with the Phoenix now? Alright. Sure. Jessa stuck her hand up without much thought or hesitation. "I'd like to go first." She announced in response to his question. The reasoning behind this was simple. Go first, get it out of the way then return to her position and take note of the others. Ideally there were a few things she'd like to observe while the Phoenix took flight but it would be difficult while in flight with him. No eyes outside her body and all that. The Ravenclaw hopped up from her bale of hay once more and moved toward the Phoenix. "I'm not very heavy." She said by way of making conversation with it and breaking the metaphoric ice. Jessa was perfectly aware that weight wouldn't be an issue, least of all her weight but this was some version of small talk. She may have offered to let Derf go first with her but she was positive he'd wanna go with Abey and she couldn't say she wasn't interested in watching both individual and pair flights. When it seemed Ash was ready, Jessa took firm hold of his tail, forgoing any thoughts to pluck the feathers as she'd been warned not to. "Okay, ready." Those seemed to be all the instruction Ash needed. In seconds he was off, lifting her off the ground with him and whisking her down the length of the barn. It was actually quite brilliant. |
Sully Kyle's eyes got wide. They got to fly with the phoenix! Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh! He looked to his partner for the mini-activity excitedly. "We can go together! Wanna fly with me?" |
The giant airbag that stretched the length of the barn beneath her received very little of her attention for now. At no point did she think Ash would make her fall, given his strength, leaving her to focus on other things like the experience of the ride itself. It didn't seem the most comfortable means of flying. Most of the work fell on the rider...on their arm strength. Ash could likely carry her back to England if he had a mind to, the real question was how well the muscles in her arms would hold up. This reason alone put it lower on the list than say....flying with a Hippogriff--at the risk of its temper--an abraxan or even a thestral. Those required very little effort on the part of the ride and allowed a better vantage point to watch the muscles in it's wing and back working together. Occasionally, she glanced up at those majestic wings as they effortlessly propelled the creature forward. It was interesting, wasn't it? How despite the lack of evidence of muscle capable of carrying much larger loads, the Phoenix was able to do just that. Were it a Mundane bird, Jessa may have had her doubts, but she'd come to learn that magic tended to bend the laws of science as it pleased. Her heart rose high into her throat as Ash turned to make his way back up the barn. The turn had seen her legs rising higher until she was almost entirely horizontal before falling back into a dangling position beneath her. By the time she approached her crowd of classmates, the young girl could feel a strain developing in her arms, just as she'd suspected. The blood flow in the opposite direction coupled with the fact she'd never been the most muscular made this come of little surprise to her. Closer....just a little closer.....when she felt Ash had taken her close enough, Jessa swung her feet forward and released the Phoenix's tail. She hit the airbag with a soft flopping sound, bouncing a few times before coming to a complete stand still....er....sit still. "Can we ride Hippogriffs next time?" Jessa asked, pulling herself back to her feet, blue eyes now locked on the Professor. |
completely off topic question, prof Quote:
For a few moments, Abey sat there, opened his mouth to answer, thought a little more, then closed it again. Over and over. And over. AND OVER. WHAT CAME FIRST?! ... He didn't know. "I don't know." And now his brain hurt. "And now my brain hurts." He actually even looked a little bit like he was in pain too, such was the expression on his face that happened to accompany deep thought. And he wasn't shook out of said deep thoughts until Derf started tugging on his robes all excitedly, but by the time Abey was focused on whatever was happening... it wasn't happening anymore. .... Soooooooo... he pretended like he HAD seen. AND GRINNED. Okay, so... another picture though. Abey looked through the selection again and, after not much deliberation, he declared, "Second one is still the second one." Hold on, wait, wait, wait. Things were happening. Class things. First Derf's million questions, but then also ACTIVITY THINGS. EXCITING sounding activity things. Also sort of dangerous-sounding, so... hopefully... no real danger, though it looked as though safety measures were covered with that big inflatable THING, and Abey had to admit... he automatically trusting that big and beautiful bird actually. MAYBE DERF WOULD FLY WITH HIM. ... First things first, though. Abey had a very urgent and pressing question for the professor that was STILL nagging him, and he NEEDED to ask it before he forgot to do so and ended up wondering for the rest of his life. "Professorrrrrrrrr?" he called out, but was already TUGTUGTUGGING at Derf's sleeve, preparing to ask if he wanted to take a phoenix flight with him. Multitasking. "Do muggles have cats?" |

Teddy looked over Lucy's parchment. The answers seemed to be logically correct, but Teddy was going to go a different route. She wrote down: "5 6 2 4 3 1" Wait...did he just say got to ride Ash?! HOLY SCULLY. She turned to Lucy with wild eyes. "PINCH ME, I'M DREAMING." |

WHAT KIND OF WORLD WERE THEY LIVING IN?! It was in that moment that the second year knew PRECISELY what his contribution to the wizarding community could be. He was going to solve this great mystery...which meant that he and Ash needed to become the bestest of friends, friends like he and Abey were, so he could gain some of the great bird's loyalty. Of course, he was not hopeful enough to believe that Ash would shift his loyalties to him (okay...so maybe he was but he wished no ill of the professor, okay?) but it was a starting point at least. "I'll s-share what I find with you one day then, profes-ss-sor," the Huffplepuff proclaimed, making a bit of an unspoken oath to the man. And Ash. SPOILER!!: Abey! Oops. He hadn't meant to make Abey's head hurt...but it was a SERIOUS question, you know? "Dad once as-sked me s-s-something s-similar to get me to s-stop talking once," he informed the Gryffindor. He had been pestering dad about work talk - curious, you know? - and dad had been busy with paperwork so asking such circular types of things always made the Hufflepuff silent for a bit because THINKING. "Muggles-s even have a kind of s-s-song. Want to hear it?" Of course Abey did! "Which come first, the chicken or the egg? Which come first, the chicken or the egg? How could somethin' so fat and burly....come from somethin' so smooth and pearly? Which come first, the chicken or the egg?" While he sang, because he was getting better at multitasking, Derf arranged the last two pictures in the proper order after Abey placed the second one...er...right where it had been all along. TADA! All done! "Now eggs are all so purty, lyin' on a plate, or sittin' here in a carton, neat and straight. And lookin' inside a box of eggs might make you feel so great, but do you ever wonder where they was, before they was inside that crate?" the second year continued to sing as he handed in both his and Abey's work to the Creature's professor. Which reminded him he really needed to get his hands on a chicken egg. A PROPER one. Not one from the fridge in the kitchen. Something else to add to his shopping list when they got to Hogsmeade, clearly. Naturally, because he totally listened to everything Abey said, he heard his friend's question and HAD to answer. "They do! My neighbor has-s-s about 10 of 'em. But I think one of them is half kneazle." Quote:
Derf's eyes were back to mooncalf level and THEN some...AND OMG JESSA HE WAS SO JEALOUS OF YOU FOR BEING THE FIRST ONE TO RIDE ON HIS TAILFEATHERS LIKE THAT AND WHY DID SHE NOT ASK HIM TO JOIN HER?! HE COULD BE HER KISSING EXPERIMENT BUT NOT HER PHOENIX RIDING PARTNER?! WHAT WAS LIFE?! Okay. His moment was over. And he actually hadn't agreed entirely to being her kissing experiment yet - ew that all sounded like so much effort based on what he heard from older students who really talked way too loudly about such things in the corridors...and put such things on display in the common room and such - BUT NOT THE POINT. Point was...there was a phoenix, an Ash, and it was HIS turn to take a little trip. "Fly with me?" he said, turning towards Abey with an extended hand. |
Professor Wayland hadn’t had an answer to Derf’s questions, and it had made Stasya a little crestfallen. He was supposed to know these things. He had Ash after all, so obviously he knew about phoenixes. It was mystifying to her that he wouldn’t have tried to figure out everything he could about the phoenix who had adopted him, and Ash’s relatives. Because obviously all phoenixes were related somehow, even if nobody knew how they had come to be in the first place. She had vowed to herself that she was going to help Derf figure out the answers if he let her. She didn’t see why he wouldn’t let her. At some point she would have to offer. They could ask Ash to help, too. It was a plan. But anyway…her eyes had widened as Professor Wayland had said they were going to get to fly with Ash. It wasn’t really riding the phoenix, but either way it was going to be cool. She had watched as Jessa had taken the first turn, already planning out what would happen when she got her turn. Some people were pairing up around her, and she wondered if anyone wanted to ride with her too, but for now she was too distracted by watching the phoenix flying to actually say much. |
Quote:
She was terrified of flying. She hated it. Benton had gotten her on a broom once....and never again. But she did she the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity here...and wasn't one to shy away from such experiences. But she was terrified. "...Want to go together?" It would be cool if she didn't, Lucy would understand. She could brave it alone, too. Maybe. |
They....They could fly with the phoenix? That was probably the coolest thing ever. Olly didn't move right away, a mixture of shock and excitement coursing through him. Then he jumped to his feet. They could fly with partners, too, and Olly knew exactly who he wanted to ride with. Instead of moving toward the phoenix, like most students were, he headed a bit in the other direction and pounced on Noelle. "Fly with me." |
Rooney was still just overwhelmed with being in the presence of a phoenix and couldn't quite understand how other students were able to just get right down to business with all of the tasks set before them. Or how they hadn't had a freak out about the risks that could happen with all of this. That was what he would have done, had he been able to think anything. So, whilst other students paired up to take their turns flying on Ash's tail, the Head Boy watched and took it all in with a great big happy sigh. Wasn't all of this just wonderful? How fun learning could be? How exciting a wizarding education was? He looked immediately for Livvy and he came over all full of love. One day, their children were going to be having this great of an education on these very grounds. How...perfect. For now, he would just wait his turn. Or until he was emotionally ready. The lower classmen deserved the fun of this lesson more than he did. He had LOVE. And that was almost as rewarding as a phoenix ride. |
Zarina was busy doodling the phoenix creature in front of her. She was laser focused on it and didn't realize it till she missed the mini activity they did. All they had to do was point out the stages of the phoenix and put it on a piece of paper. Pssshhh....she'd rather be drawing to be honest. She began to scribble and shade in till she heard the main activity. It perked her ears up when she heard the class was going to ride on a phoenix. Zae didn't think it would be possible. She was SO IN. The slytherin saw the rules on the board. She read them carefully not wanting to harm the creature. Wait till she told her parents this aspect. Least she will only go to the barn and back. Not a far distance at all. She saw other students going first and struck up the courage to go on the line. Zae didn't want to wait for a partner. She wanted to go by herself. Zae took a deep breath in and said, "Heyy there little guy..." and began to pet it to let the phoenix know she was friendly. She went behind it and began to grip it gently. Man this was nerve wracking. Zae said, "Alright fly..." I guess that was the right command because she was flying in the air. "WWWOOOAAHHH..." It was kind of higher than she expected and she was flying the length of the barn. She was smiling wide and felt the wind in her hair. This was bloody cool. |
Phone post >_< Quote:
They were going to be flying with a Phoenix?????? Noelle mouth gaped and her swoons were becoming a problem. If he didn't stop, she'd change her training to CoMC. .... okay. Unrealistic, but this Professor though. Everyone was getting up to go towards the Phoenix. Noelle stood but turned to look for Olly when he was suddenly in her arms. She giggled. "Howd you know I was going to pick you?" She asked, giving him a wink. "Of course I'd fly with you." Did they need to get in line? One at a time?? Noelle held Ollys hand and waited their turn. Her eyes following the Phoenix. |
"You're a genius," Katy watched Oliver work, a bit lazily, to be honest, and she didn't have any objections to how he arranged the pictures. When she checked their work, it was... well, frankly, it was right. Of course it was. Oliver acted like a dunce, but she wouldn't give the time of day to any dunces. Fun as that had been, Katy was pleased as anything that they were moving on to actually riding the phoenix. THAT was the kind of practical lesson she was here for, and Katy bounced to her feet and left Oliver behind. Find your own way, mate, because this girl was on a mission! She waited her turn for the phoenix to come available, and when she finally made it to the front of the line, Katy wrapped both hands around that tail feather. It felt like bird abuse, but it helped that she rode horses and understood that it wasn't the same as pulling her own hair or plucking a chicken. It was different. It was fine, and they had Ash's permission. A moment later, she wasn't worried about hurting the phoenix; she was busy gaping as the ground fell away under her feet. |
Henry had just rearranged the last three pictures in order of progressive molting when the professor addressed the class again. He quickly jotted down the numbered order of pictures on his parchment, scribbled his name at the top, and passed it towards the front before listening to what they'd be doing next. Wait.. riding the phoenix? Henry looked at Ash a bit skeptically. He knew that they could carry weight from their tails if they needed to. But he never really heard of leisurely riding them that way. It wouldn't... hurt or be burdensome for them after awhile? But he trusted that Professor Wayland wouldn't have them doing any sort of activity that would hurt one of his own creatures. And he was the expert after all. He watched a few of his classmates go for rides on Ash's tail feathers and, after a few moments, decided he wanted to at least experience it for himself and he got in line. Henry did love to fly - on a broom, on a winged horse - and he wanted to see how this would compare. When it was his turn, he firmly grasped Ash's tail feathers. "Whenever you're ready!" He barely got the words out before the phoenix took off and was pulling him into the air with him. |
SPOILER!!: Jessa! SPOILER!!: Abey! Tristan watched as the students began flying. They all seemed to be really enjoying themselves, and Ash was being very, very well behaved. Even though he had had Ash for about 12 years now, he hadn't completely domesticated him quiet yet. Ash had a tendency to not want to listen to him at times. But of course that all came with how independent Phoenixes were and he doubted he would ever full have control over that aspect of the rare bird. But he couldn't help but admire how wonderful and patient he was being with the students. He would definitely be getting a good treat once class was over. "You guys are doing great! Keep it up!" He called out to everyone, and continued watching the students take flight with the majestic bird. OOC: You guys are awesome!! Keep it up you still have plenty of time! |
Riding on the Phoenix's tail? A grin spread across Carl's face. He was hoping that he would get to touch Ash the Phoenix, but he would never pass up the chance to fly with him. The fifteen-year-old got in line and read through the rules on the blackboard as he waited. He definitely did not want to hurt Ash or himself, so familiarizing himself with the rules was a must. He then turned his attention to the people before him taking flight with the Phoenix. It seemed like a lot of fun and it was amazing how Ash could lift them up as if they were light as feather. He soon became impatient for his turn to come. When it finally came, Carl walked up to Ash and smiled at him. Okay, maybe he was a bit nervous. He took his tail firmly and made sure he was not tugging on any feather. "Hey, Ash... well, I'm ready!" He said. And they were off! At his words, Ash immediately flew up. Flapping his wings, he flew them down the length of the barn. Carl felt weightless. Looking down, he could see Professor Wayland, his classmates and the giant airbags below him. As somebody who could not fly well on a broomstick, this was an amazing experience. They made their way back across the barn and this time he looked up at the Phoenix, wondering what it was like to be immortal. He thought he wouldn't like it too much if he had to live forever... Before he knew it, they were back at the group. He let go of Ash's tail, landing on "the Blob". "Thank you for the ride!" He told the Phoenix with a smile. |
Professor, Rooney, Stasya Olivia appreciated Professor Wayland humoring her with the phoenix discussion, and also loved that he hadn't seemed to be frustrated or annoyed at her opinions. She was a Gryffindor, through in through. So, she understood about herself that she could be the biggest pain in the backside around. It was a gift, truly. There had been more she'd wanted to say, naturally, but they were moving on with the main activity and... Well, Liv wanted to join Rooney up in the air. Speaking of Rooney... SPOILER!!: Future husband! Implementing the duplication spell, Geminio, Olivia quickly made a perfect copy of her notes for him...because Rooney had seemed a bit preoccupied...and awestruck in the presence of Ash. It was strange that more people hadn't been, but then again...they were at Hogwarts. Everything was magical and wondrous here. To a degree, when you hadn't been around for years and had your senses dulled to the majesty of it all. But yeah. if Livvy knew Roo, he would berate himself later for not copying down any and all provided information. It was his NEWT year, after all. Tucking the parchment page full of notes into his book, the blonde grinned; slipping her hand into his. "You'll go with me?" It made the most sense, mhm, and.....to be honest, she didn't want anyone else joining him. Olivia may have been confused about a lot of things right now, but her jealousy was absolutely no joke. ....but then, of course, her eyes landed on little Stasya. Her precious baby Lion! Tugging Roo along with her, she approached the younger girl, a kind smile on her face. "Do you need help finding someone to ride with?... Do you want one of us join you?" If Liv went with Rooney, she could get back to join her young friend. Obviously, she wasn't opposed to taking more than one turn. It was a PHOENIX! Exciting stuff... |
Livvy and Stasya Quote:
His attention was easily stolen, okay? Rising to stand with Liv on his arm, Roo accepted that they were being moved towards one of the younger Gryffindor students. Wasn't Olivia Lynn the most wonderful of people? Ugh, yes. "I can go alone if you want to go with Olivia, Miss Stasya. I'll share her with you for today." |
Oh! She wouldn't even have to wait for a lesson! Well wasn't that just grand?? "I'll be by your office before the end of the day anyway, Professor. Reckon I'll pick up a permission slip and have you sign it then." Two fwoopers with one stone...or.....er...three fwoopers with one stone she supposed at this point. Maybe four. The point was, she'd be seeing him when the lesson was done, after lunch maybe but certainly before dinner when the grounds began to get dark and her visit was less likely to be favourably looked upon. That decided, the young girl turned her attention to the others who would also be having a go at this flying thing before the lesson was over. As she'd suspected, there didn't seem to be a whole lot of strain as Ash took them down the length of the barn and back. It was something to look into, one of several things to look into when it came to such a creature. This on a full plate would naturally see some setbacks in other areas. Something she'd figure out later. |
The more Derf spoke, the more Abey's head hurt, especially when the part about chickens came up; aka ANOTHER question that he had no idea how to answer. Soooooooo it was best to just sit back and enjoy the song and even sway a little bit to the music, because they were done with the pictures now (though Abey himself had avoided writing the order down because PSHHHH no thank you) so this was a celebration. BUT ANYWAY. CATS. MUGGLES. WHAT'S THE DEAL? Abey KNEW he could always count on Derf to know all things about animals actually, and he realised that he probably could have just asked his favourite Hufflepuff creatures expert rather than bother the professor with it. BUT! This way he got TWO answers, and two was always better than one. Unless it was to do with something bad or scary or not fun, in which case none was better than one AND two. "So, muggles have cats! And sometimes half-Kneazles, but never full Kneazles." OKAY. "Thank you!" He would remember that actually. Probably maybe. Either way, the nagging curiosity had been settled, so there was only one thing left to do. "YES!" Abey took hold of Derf's hand and started bounding in the direction of the big beautiful bird, all the while singing a song which he was PRETTY SURE first came from the muggle world, on account of he had learnt it at the muggle drama club he used to be a part of. "Come flyyyy with me, let's fly, let's fly awayyyyyyy!" And then he stopped, and hummed the rest, because that was all the words he could remember. |
Shay grabbed her parchment and turned it in to the professor. She was on the way back to her seat when she stopped dead in her tracks. Say what now? They got to ride the phoenix? Well that was something you didn't get to do every day. Can you say excited? Of course there were rules and Shay read each one carefully. They sounded reasonable enough. She liked rule number four best. When the professor asked who wanted to go first, the sixth year's hand shot up. "Me, me, me", she thought in her head. Shay watched as some of her classmates took their rides. That only increased her excitement. And finally, it was her turn. Shay walked up to the majestic bird and paused for a moment. "Hi Ash. I'm Shay", she said. 'Cause you know, when you were about to grab someone's tail feathers, it was only polite to introduce yourself. Deciding the time was right, Shay gently grabbed a hold of of Ash's feathers. Firm, but gentle. Right. "Ok Ash, I'm ready." Well, as ready as she was going to be anyway. And they were off. They began to rise and Shay's feet left the ground. Higher and higher they went, until the phoenix leveled off and they began to circle the area. Shay was definitely enjoying this. She resisted the urge to give her best roller coaster scream. It was so much fun. Rule number four.....check. Shay concentrated on remembering every moment of her ride. She knew that it could only last so long because other students needed to have a turn. Finally, she felt the bird begin to descend. Far to soon, her feet touched solid ground again and the ride was over. "Thanks Ash. That was pretty amazing." Reluctantly, Shay stepped aside to allow the next rider their turn. She headed back to her seat and wondered. Were they allowed to have seconds? If so, she was all in. |
