Magizoologists? Say that three times fast. She wanted to whisper that to Tenacius but then she remembered that he was a Prefect and had to set a good example. Then she turned to Etta. Wait. She was also a Prefect. She bit her lip and kept that comment to herself. Merlin. Had to set a good example. Nevertheless, the fact about Phoenixes being able to control the temperature of their feathers was amazing. "Wow," she whispered and then proceeded to take notes on the creature. She paused her notetaking when the Professor posed a few questions to the class. Hmm... "Well the phoenix becomes a newborn. Maybe it resemble a small plucked turkey?" she offered, hoping not to offend the phoenix there. Sorry friend. As to the Professor's question about whether phoenixes were immortal or not, Olivia stopped to listen to her classmates opinions. So was the pheonix like the Doctor from the muggle show Doctor Who? The Doctor was able to regenerate in order not to die and he would always get a new face, body, personality but would have all of the same memories. She stayed quiet and torn on this question. |
She gasped softly as she watched it take flight. What a magnificent creature. Hi, Ash. I'm from India too. She had only wished he had sat next to her, but regardless, she was very interested in this lesson. Her homesickness was put aside for now. Teddy remembers seeing a picture of a reborn phoenix in her old textbook back at home, a naked, little, soot-covered baby creature happy to live again. "Excuse me, professor." She started, moving to face him. "I think the immortality question is a trick question." She looked over at Ash and then back to the professor. "In Hinduism, the soul is reincarnated into a new body after death, and the soul itself is considered immortal. However, the phoenix isn't moving into a new body, its body in full is consumed in fire and then reborn from those same ashes." She paused to catch up on her thoughts. "So, can you tell me if its the same soul that rises from those ashes?" |
........Professor Wayland had a PHOENIX PATRONUS?! A touch awe'd by this revelation, Olivia couldn't help but idly wonder what her own patronus might be. Of course, she'd toyed with the idea of trying to learn that bit of magic, but... was also scared. Considering recent events in her life. ....What if she couldn't conjure one? The disappointment might've killed her. #dramatic Anyway,.... it sounded like a job for Prince Eric (aka Professor Hirsch). The blonde would send him a formal owl, requesting his assistance with the matter after lunch. Retaking her seat on the hay bale, Liv collected her notebook and quill from the ground; adding a new column on the page. One titled with "The Phoenix Life Cycle"... Continuously being reborn, over and over again... for years upon years... sounded exhausting. To be quite honest, she felt fatigued herself just listening to her peers given answers. What a powerful responsibility it must've been to be a Phoenix in this world. "It sounds exhausting, to be honest... Running the cycle of life, constantly living and dying. It's....almost cruel, in my opinion." It was a casual comment, of course... Not her actual answer. Nonetheless, it was true. It did sound terribly cruel. "...Anyway, I suppose the phoenix would reflect any animal during the stages of life. For example, a newborn phoenix would be hairless and small; a baby...and when it was near death, elderly, it'd he molted and greatly diminished." She paused, regarding the actual phoenix that was currently resting beside Mel.... As for its immortality... "I'm not sure, because... I put this to you, if it is reborn after every cycle, wouldn't all it's parts be...new?, as well? So, those things wouldn't deteriorate over a long period of time." |
!!!!! Even after the professor mentioned Egypt, it didn't really actually properly actually register until Junia's elbow started nudging at Abey's arm. But!!! That was so cool! "Egypt! That's us!" he blurted out, gesturing to himself and Junia and of course to Rula. So... did that mean he actually totally COULD have a pet phoenix actually? Maybe? HmmmmMMMMM? That was certainly how it sounded to Abey. It was logic or something. ... Wait, hold on. What were they talking about? Something Abey didn't know anything about, basically actually. So, well, obviously he wasn't going to pretend like he had an answer. No, instead, he kept his eyes on Ash, the beautiful beautiful BEAUTIFUL BIRD OH MERLIN LOOK AT ALL THOSE COLOURS, and willed it to come over and say hello to him. Already he was formulating a plan. A plan to go back to his dormitory to get his paints, and recreate exactly what he was seeing when he looked at the phoenix, because he knew he knew he KNEW he didn't have the words to describe it. |
Zarina heard one girl comment on her answer. She added more to her aspect of phoenix being a symbol and what it meant. Least they both got it right which is totally awesome. She could listen to him talk all day and admire his good looks. Zae heard him go on about phoenixes and learn about their history. It was interesting to say the least. She began to doodle phoenixes in her notebook and wrote little notes about them. Now he was mentioning burning day? What is a burning day? Oh well that made sense once he explained it. Zae had a hunch and began to raise her hand, "Well on a burning day I assume the phoenix looks sickly and begins to wilt and just burst into flame and turn into ash in their little perch if they have one." As for the immortal question that was a good one. Zae had no idea. They could be immortal if they always reborn from the ashes but is it the same phoenix that the person had? Like personality wise and such? Such questions Zae wouldn't say out loud. She just said her piece and began to check out Mr. Dreamy Pants at the front of the class. |
"After a phoenix burns it's reborn.. so it's like a baby at that point i would imagine." He hadn't done too much research into the flaming birds himself and really only knew what he'd read in passing. "I would think they are immortal, just that immortal doesn't also mean invincible. So the Phoenix could die just not from natural causes like old age?" Like a Tolkien Elf. "I do have a question, Professor. Phoenixes live where there is very little oxygen on mountaintops. But does that ever effect their burning? Say if one flew too high would it not be able to burn?" He was merely curious and understood if something like this had never happened or had never been recorded. But he still wanted to know. |
Hmm, lots of unique questions and discussion being tossed around, which it seemed that many of her classmates were of mixed consensus on the creatures being immortal. It was already pretty much said what they look like on burning day and after they burn, but the immortal discussion was something different. "Immortal, by definition, is the ability to live forever. In theory, Phoenixes have these abilities, because even though they're 'dying', they are not really dying, nor is their regeneration as a baby phoenix the same as resurrection. While Phoenixes are dying and being born again, they still uniquely have the same identity. Your Phoenix, Ash, is still Ash and will always be Ash as long as he is yours. However, if Phoenixes were mortal and truly died, they would take on a new personality and identity, even though they were Ash in a past life, they would not the same Ash when they are reborn." Okay, that sounded much less complicated in her head. |
Emmeline was BEYOND jealous of the girl that Ash chose to sit next to. She wanted to pet him too! She hoped the professor would tell Derf that everyone could when he'd asked, because how often did you get to pet a PHOENIX? She had thought that Ash was just a random creature in the barn, so she was beyond impressed to learn that he was actually Professor Wayland's pet. "How did you win Ash's loyalty like that, Professor?" He was a grown up and a Creatures Professor and all, but weren't phoenixes really picky? Emmeline dug in her bag for her COMC notebook, quill and ink, before scribbling down notes feverishly. She knew most of what her classmates had said before, but the professor provided lots of new information and she wanted to remember it ALL. She listened intently to the professor's new questions, eager to say something that showed how much she loved creatures and how cool phoenixes were, but she thought that her classmates had covered the question quite thoroughly. She didn't know for sure that they were right, because she'd never seen a phoenix be reborn but going from molted to fire to a baby sounded about right to her. Some of the answers given were kind of upsetting; who thinks about a phoenix having its head cut off?! But she guessed it was still important. Thinking about the immortality question, she looked back at Ash and asked: "But, like she [Skylar] said..isn't Ash still Ash when he's reborn? If he was a totally new bird like, in mind and soul, wouldn't you have to win his loyalty back every time? Does he not remember stuff from before his burning day?" Because she thought that was very important. She knew that Ash's body was remade but how could he lose his soul every time? That just didn't sound right to her, and she frowned in confusion as she thought about it. It would be so terrible if Ash had a Burning Day some time and forgot the professor, who obviously cared about the phoenix very much. The little Gryffindor gazed at Professor Creature expectantly because she was almost more interested in this than in petting Ash -- maybe. |
Whaaaat? Had this guy actually seen an augurey they sooo didn't look alike. Seriously, Ash was so majestic, and Emmaleigh's augurey was well, rather pathetic looking. She'd never told the Salanders that the thing was pretty ugly. The girl was pretty ticked though, that he wouldn't share his story of how he got his phoenix. It seemed like it would be important for them to know. "But weren't there only like a couple of domesticated phoenixes last century? So you having one is well, improbable." Great, now she sounded even more like her sister. Listening to the lecture, she took down notes on what what the professor was saying. One thing that stuck out to her was the area's where the phoenix was native. Egypt, China, and India? What did these places have in common? Obviously, this would need research. One more reason why she needed to visit Egypt. At the questions posed the the class, the brunette thought for a minute before thinking it over. "Don't uh, the look like a plucked chicken at some point? And much more like an Augurey I'd guess." Like the same sort of sad and pathetic look. And uh, yeah, that last question? it was above her pay grade, although it was something she was wondering. |
"They have to die eventually. I mean really die, not just poof and re-hatch. Right," Katy burst out, and a moment later, she remembered to raise her hand. Yes, right, hand up and all that. She was driven to distraction by not understanding something, and that had her forgetting manners. She blinked before waving her hand around again. And continuing. "I mean, sir, that Dark Creatures have an unnatural life span. It's one of the ways to identify them. So, that suggests to me that they must be truly born and truly die, at some point in their long life span. Unless the time between burning days counts as a life span." But that was so confusing. |
Dora had sat quietly, listening to her classmates as they all seemed to focus on the question of immortality. Interesting. But one comment grabbed her attention more than the others. As it was all speculation and opinions she had no qualms about some people disagreeing with her. Not at all actually. But this one brought some questions... "But do they HAVE to die? They're magical beings of immense power and mystery. Who are we to say that they have to adhere to what we think is the norm? " She said as she looked to Katy Toussaint. Not meaning to single her out, but something about the finality of her opening statement had roused the Gryffindor from her watching the Professor... errr... the BEAUTIFUL MAJESTIC BIRD! |
Lucy raised her hand. "They're supposed to look really old and ill on Burning Day, right?" she asked, "And then...they burst into flames and then they're a baby..or..chick? buried under the ashes." Right? That was what all the books said, right? Was he looking for something else? Something more? She nervously glanced at her classmates. "I don't think that's to say they're immortal. They live multiple lives, but they're just as susceptible to being killed...or other outside, unnatural causes of death." More nervous glancing. |
Melbourne’s eyes tracked Ash as he took flight the way his feathers glinted as he circled was beautiful…majestic – oh merlin he was getting really close she could almost reach out and touch him…and then it happened. Ash was next to her – sitting NEXT to her…blinking she grinned at the Phoenix and smiled at him. ”Hi there,” she whispered over to the beautiful creature, raising her hand and looking over to Ash with the other she asked ”Professor may I possibly pet him?” she asked as after all, Ash did choose Professor Wayland to be his human….still she reached her hand out instinctively as if offering it for Ash to inspect, and well…see if she was worthy of touching his fine feathers. Raising her hand again Mel grinned ”Professor do the Phoenixes look more frail – almost tired like they are about to molt on burning day?” she asked as she was well excited….and might have been a little eager to see what Ash could look like…really, she could feel his warmth already it was magnificent. MEL HAD A PHOENIX FRIEND…okay, so maybe friend was over stepping but it was really amazing to be sitting next to a majestic creature. |
Cass settled into her seat as the professor returned her greeting, awaiting the lesson to begin which didn’t take long. Gone was the throne of hay and Wayland now speaking to start the class. Creatures associated with fire…that was a loaded topic. The Ravenclaw’s mind was already filled with ideas even as the man mentioned a few. However, then he was whistling and in came the creature she had seen around the hut and barn associated with COMC. A phoenix! They were certainly the cooler of the fire-related creatures. Them and dragons. But what magical abilities did they have? Well healing tears…and reincarnation from their own ashes…and their feathers were magical for wands. All three had been said as well as others so Cassie hadn’t just echoed the statements. As the bird took flight, her gaze followed it, trying to properly divide her attention between the phoenix and what the professor had to say. Questions…questions. There were questions. “Well I suppose they’d look much like any other creature near their death…sickly and tired.” Maybe a few less feathers. “Then they go up in flames, turn to ash, and become little chick versions of their former selves.” |
SPOILER!!: Y'all! Allowing Ash a few more seconds of rubbing time, he whistle the first tune again, causing Ash to perk up and look for him. The majestic bird quickly took to the skies, slowly drifting upon the wind, allowing all his feathers to be seen like a proud Peacock. He shook his head chuckling as the bird fluttered over to him and landed on his shoulder. He gave Ash another treat before speaking to the class. "Now, and this is my opinion on the immortality question, I believe these beautiful creatures have Immortal souls, and the magical ability to regenerate their failing bodies. Many studies have been started, but never finished about these birds because they are able to regenerate. Also, once their owners die, as I said before, most Phoenixes go off on their own to live an independent live because they are so loyal to that one owner. So I feel, yes they have a starting birth...but they never truly die." He paused to let the students think about that for a moment before saying, "All of your opinions could be correct, but we may never truly know for sure." He grinned. "Now it is time for an activity. Each of you are going to be given six different images of six very different looking Phoenixes. What you must do is, look at those images and determine the correct phase of life they are in, and then write down on a piece of parchment the numbers of the pictures on the back in age order from youngest to oldest." He hoped that made sense..., "So when you write it down, just write down the number of the pictures. Picture one, picture 4, etc. Does everyone understand?" He sure hoped so. "Alright...you may work with a partner if you would like, and be sure to turn in your parchment when you are done." With a flick of his wand each student was given 6 different wizarding pictures. The picture with the number 1 on the back had an image of a Phoenix that's plumage is very dull, has lost part of its tail feathers and a lot of its body feathers, and has dull black eyes. Occasionally, it looks as if it's gagging. Picture 2 was a picture of Ash in his current state, not completely at his peak of beauty but almost there. Picture 3 was of another Phoenix who's plumage is slightly dull and is losing feathers but not too many to be noticeable. It rarely makes a gagging motion. Picture 4 was of another Phoenix who was at it's Peak of beauty and a bit larger than Ash. Picture 5 was of a Phoenix that had no feathers whatsoever, very dull eyes, and was constantly gagging. Picture 6 was of a Phoenix chick that had just been reborn from the ashes; Still covered in soot, without many feathers at all, but super cute. "If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. You may begin!" Tristan wandered about watching the students progress. OOC: Alright guys! Thank you so much for your interesting and insightful answers! We really enjoyed reading all of them! And most importantly thank you for baring with me in my first lesson! If you have any questions please feel free to ask us ;) So this is your Mini Activity. As plainly stated, write down the correct order of the pictures from youngest to oldest. You may partner up, just make sure both names are on the parchment! Let them make mistakes and argue about order! Use as many posts as you want and most importantly, have fun! :) I will move on to the main activity in roughly 30 hours. |
Abey!!!! No...but like...liiiiiiiiiiiiiike...LIKE...didn't the professor remember that patience and this particular second year did not mix all that well?! ESPECIALLY WHEN IT CAME TO HANDS ON EXPERIENCES WITH CREATURES?!?!?! THIS. WAS. TORTURE. Bouncing eagerly in his seat and jumped in surprise with pictures suddenly appeared in his hand. OOOOOOOOOOH...what kind of spell did THAT?! For ALL of them at once?! Switching spell with the AIR? Since, well, these picture props had to be kept SOMEWHERE, you know? And like like...they hadn't just been summoned so... But then his attention span shifted from spell theoretics to the task at hand, surprisingly. Because unlike basically every other subject at Hogwarts...THIS class was the one he could actually stay on task. Mostly. Although that would be rather questionable as he picked up one of the pictures (the one of a phoenix clearly on it's Burning Day), held it to his face, and turned towards one particular Gryffindor. "AAAAAAAABEEEEEEEEEEEY" he called, coughing and hacking as though he were about to cough up a lung between every other word. "Work...with me...please...you're...my... only...hope..." |
Quote:
He had just turned to look at the professor, just opened his mouth to answer if muggles ALSO had cats or if they were just for witches and wizards, when the yelling of his name drew everything else from his mind. Mildly alarmed - okay... maybe a little more than mild - Abey looked for the source of the yelling, and he knew very well WHO it was. For a moment he stared, wide eyed, mouth hanging open slightly in his surprise, the beginnings of panic starting to creep in. Friend... coughing... choking... dying... Of course, it took him only a moment to notice the picture his VILLAIN was holding over his face, and another moment to realise he was only fooling around. Still, though, Abey's heart was RACING and his mind was all KDSKJHSDHSAKJHGSSHJ as it went through a bazillion awful scenarios, but other than that... he kept his cool. Sorta. "Derf, don't," he said, his tone a mixture of reproachfulness and actual sort of fear and a little bit of upsetness. Don't doooooo that. He held his hand on his chest and felt the WHAM-WHAM-WHAM of his heart. BUT ACTUALLY... Derf was one of Abey's BESTEST SPECIAL FRIENDS and Abey didn't think he could ever ever ever be actually properly truly upset with him, so he shuffled over to join the Hufflepuff and the pictures. AND GAVE HIM A VERY SUDDEN ACTUALLY BIG HUG THAT SAID 'PLEASE DO NOT DIE'. |
Quote:
But before he could get an apology out there was an Abey hugging him and, well, who was this Hufflepuff to turn down a hug?! Squishing his best mate back SUPER tight, along with somehow keeping his balance on the hay of which he sat on, Derf began muttering apology after apology in the other boy's ear. "I'MS-SORRYSORRYSOOOOOOORRY!" He would make it up to him. Promise! "Be my partner s-still?" he asked sans dramatic theatrics and with a bit of a grin. The task was already easy enough and together it would be twice as so. Or ten billion times more difficult. "Already know this-s-s one goes-s las-st in the order!" So picture five was reaaaaaaally pictures six. TADA. |
Quote:
And then he freed Derf from his clutches. Okay, heart rate steadily getting back to normal. ... It was only then that Abey realised he had not been listening to a word that the professor had been saying while he had been introducing the activity. That wasn't TOO much of a problem though of course actually; all Abey needed to do was apply a bit of logic and guesswork to figure out that they were supposed to be working out what order the pictures went in, to do with how they had a tendency to get old and haggard and burst into flames. "Soooooo..." he scanned through the pictures, occasionally looking up at the real phoenix in the vicinity as though to compare, or to see how close to a burning day THAT one was. Before long, he grabbed the last one, with the baby baby baby phoenix, and declared, "This one's first. I think." Technically it could have also been last depending on where you said the cycle started, but Abey didn't know if they were meant to be ordering them by age or just by regular order, and he didn't want to end up overcomplicating the matter for his poor brain by going into all the technicalities actually. Okay. EASY. Two easiest ones, done. |
partner if anyone wants, but can't promise reply in time, cause of my weird schedule Oh good, the Professor seemed to somehow understand what she'd been saying by Skylar talking in what she'd thought to be circles. Jotting down notes about his opinion on the immortality debate, she smiled, because it seemed as though she was on the right track, only the Professor just said it much more eloquently. And now they were doing a matching exercise with six pictures to order from youngest to oldest. Okay, not too bad. Picture 6 was obviously first, because phoenix chick = baby = youngest. Picture 5, well Ash seemed to be at the oldest state, ... so now that she had first and last figured out, now to fill in the middle? She glanced around at her classmates for some sort of clue, as she thoughtfully tried to work through it in her head. SPOILER!!: notes |
Kyle looked around after looking through the pictures. He thought he had the answer already, but he wanted to be sure. "Anybody want to pair up with me?" He didn't really know anyone, and a lot of them seemed to know each other already. |
Despite it being an opinion, Jessa still scribbled down the words of the Professor. It wasn't something she could personally agree with, given the phoenix population was pretty steady based on what she'd read, which would indicate a fall off and replacement at some point but the girl liked to take things from different angles when studying. It helped. The Ravenclaw remained in her seat after receiving the photos. She had no intention of working with a partner, partners weren't her thing in Care of Magical Creatures because they tended to have varying views and she tended to be less than interested. Varying views were generally alright, but she didn't like others forcing theirs on her. She pulled her feet up, crossing them like pretzels before laying the photos out before her. Jessa didn't need anyone's help to tell her the orders of these. All it took was prior knowledge of the creature and while she wan'ts an avid Phoenix researcher, the young girl felt she knew enough. For instance, the first question was very easy. It had everything she'd just described. No mistaking it, this was a dying bird. That naturally made it the last or sixth stage which she quickly scribbled down. The scrawny looking hatchling-esque nature of picture 6 drew her attention next. Freshly covered in soot and barely a feather in sight. Stage one for sure. See, she didn't need help with something this simple......except.....now that she'd gotten a look at picture 5......she couldn't help but think that maybe this was the sixth stage afterall. Just a little setback. She crossed out her originally answer, finding it hard to deny that this bird was a hell of a lot closer to burning than the first had been. SPOILER!!: Parchment |
Catchup. AAh. (sorry he refused to partner up sorry) Text Cut: Derf .....okay, why was Derfael staring at him like that? Had he noticed something was off? Cameron had absolute ZERO intentions of getting into the details with anybody about why he wasn't all too keen on today's topic. So with a polite stare back at the Hufflepuff, he then quickly dropped his gaze down to his parchment. Taking notes, you know. Looking busy. Phoenixes were cool creatures after all. Text Cut: The Prof#1 ....still taking notes.... ...very busy taking notes... Cameron kept glancing at the professor's phoenix. From what he'd seen in books this phoenix didn't look like it was close to Burning Day just yet. Or at least it didn't look like it would happen in this lesson. Good. Mhm. He was too busy staring at the phoenix, trying to recognize the stage it was currently in to raise his hand. Not that he didn't know the ANSWER of course. He did. Maybe not as thoroughly as some of the other students but he would have had something to say. Text Cut: The Prof#2 Before he got the chance to, however, the class had already moved on. Which was totally fine. Neatly writing down everyone's answers as well as the professor's opinion (which, just FYI, he totally agreed with), Cameron then tapped his quill against his parchment, listening to what would come next. Alright. That sounded like an easy enough task. While he usually didn't mind working with other people he preferred keeping to himself during this lesson. Just ignore him. He wasn't even there. Cameron carefully went over the six pictures, examining each closely before putting them into the correct order. Yeah. That seemed right. Although Picture Three and Picture One looked kind of similar. Hmm. SPOILER!!: Mini Activity |
Only three pictures remained now that she was sure in her decision with the others. While she looked them over, Jessa began swapping them in and out of positions, trying to get them as in order as possible. That was how she took notice of picture 3. It gagged, not nearly as much as the last two she had along the timeline but it was obvious enough to give away its position. That she scribbled down before looking to the last two. Picture 4 and Picture 2. Experience had taught her that things tended to rise to a peak before slowing down. That being the case, the phoenix looking more like Ash likely had more of a ways to grow than the majestic stunner that was picture 4. Once her mind was made up and the last of the pictures was in line, Jessa surveyed her little makeshift timeline. To her, it was making all the sense. Stage 1 was picture 6, the scrawny little newborn. Stage 2 was picture 2, with stage 3 coming up at picture 4. Ironically, stage 4 was picture 3 before you hit stage 5 at picture 1 and stage 6 at picture 5. Despite having done the scribbling onto the back of the pictures to keep them straight in her head, Jessa moved her quill further down on her parchment to make a clearer list. SPOILER!!: Parchment |
