CoMC Lesson 1: Flight of the Phoenix It was a lovely September morning, not too hot and not too cold. A perfect day for this lesson! Tristan had set up shop in an empty pasture in front of the barn. He set out bales of hay in a semi circle for the students to sit on, and a black board in front of the semi circle. There was not one clue as to what creature they would be working with today. He wanted it to be a surprise. |
Care of Magical Creatures class! Yes! She was excited for this lesson. Or perhaps she had consumed too many coffees or teas at breakfast. Olivia practically skipped out of the castle (too much coffee) and made her way towards the pasture. She stopped her skipping halfway there, stopping to close her eyes and enjoy the perfect temperature for the morning. How she loved fall. She continued on her way until she made it to the pasture to find Professor Wayland sitting on a throne of... hay? Olivia chuckled at his site and felt as if she ought to bow to him. "Good morning Professor Wayland. How are you?" she said with a grin and a somewhat graceful (as graceful as a professional gravity tester could be) curtsy. Or should she say King Wayland? Hehe. "I like your throne." The caffeine was really getting to her. |
So like... Dora wasn't early, right? Right. She was JUST on time. On time in her jeans and hoodie and trainers, yah? ABSOLUTELY! The blonde beamed as she bounced (almost) down to the pasture. There was not much Dor loved more than the fresh, Scotland air this time of year. Mean... it wasn't too hot and muggy anymore. It began to cool and the greens were tinged brown, right? Smiling at the ridiculously, distractingly, BEAUTIFUL (but not Casper Greenwood) professor, The Gryffindor greeted the man, "Good day, sir. Hope you're finding Hogwarts alright, yeah?! " Yep. But like... if he did find Hoggies kind of poo his first year teaching there... then Dora Kennedy Umbridge totally GOT IT. And she would be there for him. Yeah. Maybe. But Sheesh look at his face. HIIIII. Finally, the sixth year moved to perch on a bale of hay like... toward the FURTHEST PART OF THE PROF. ugh. |
One of Etta's favourite classes. Excitedly, she made her way down to the grounds, enjoying the lovely weather very much. They really should have all the classes outside. Now, wouldn't that be fun? Not very practical but still. The Hufflepuff finally reached the pasture.. realising that she was rather early to class. As usual. --- The new professor seemed to be sitting on a throne of hay, which was rather interesting. Etta greeted him with a polite smile. "Hello, professor. Hope you're well." She picked a random spot and sat down comfortably, turning slightly to give Olivia a bright smile and wave. "Hey, you." |
Creatures class awwyea! Tenacius zoomed for the barns on his trusty cruiser. They have a new Professor, and he was looking forward to meeting him. He made a wide loop to slow his velocity down and hopped off his board just as he was entering the pasteur "Hey there Professor Wayland!" he greeted the man with that trademarked Tenaciusly bright smile. Oh hey looky who we have here... "Hi Olivia!" he greeted thte wavy haired Lioness. Can he sit with herrrr? |
SPOILER!!: Etta and Tenacius She was literally about to start bouncing on her toes when she remembered she could sit down. Oh. Right. Sitting was a thing. How silly of her. So then she took a seat and saw Etta here. "Etta! Hey! How's it going?" she asked very happily before leaning over to whisper. "I may or may not have had a few too many cups of coffee." Yep. She was feeling super jittery at the moment. It was funny how coffee worked. One minute it felt like nothing was happening and then all of a sudden BAM! It hit ya. She was about to open her mouth again when she saw Tenacius make an entrance. Was that a hover board or something like that? She shook her head, chuckling a little. Tenacius always made a great entrance. And then he was talking to her. Oh hey! "Hey Ace!" she waved with a wide grin. It had been too long since she had seen him. "Come sit over here with me and Etta! How have you been?" Her hands weren't shaking... No. Not at all. Maybe just a little. |
For anyone ~ As Elora walked onto the school grounds, the slight fall breezed tickled her neck. Reaching into her bag containing her necessities for class, she pulled out her new Hufflepuff scarf and wrapped it snugly around herself. Skipping happily towards the barn she noticed that a few of her schoolmates were already gathered. 'Im still kind of early, so that's a good thing~' she thought. Approaching the circle of hay seats, she noticed the professor on a much fancier seat, resembling a throne. "Hello Professor, I.. like your throne, it looks very comfortable!" she said kindly before taking a seat on an empty hay towards the front of the circle. |
Mentions of Elora <3 Thankfully for this Gryffindor gal, she was no longer cycling through terrible monthly pains. So, this morning found her to be in a much better mood than what she'd been in in the previous week's worth of lessons. Bleeeesssed be. Yes, with her improved mood, the blonde all but flounced into the semi-circle of hay bales and already gathered peers. Flashing a pretty smile around at them all, but mostly her fellow Lions (Ollie, Dora, and Ace), Liv decided to find a spot in the center. First Lady of Hogwarts, coming through. Hmm, perhaps she'd sit with Rooney today. If he were feeling up to it... "Professor, you seem well this morning!" Her greeting was cheerful and bright. And also, aww. LOOKIT the adorable Puffer First Year (Elora). "Hello." Olivia went out of her way to greet the small girl. |
SPOILER!!: Olivia~ Being outside relaxed Elora. There was something about the fresh air and the nature that calmed her down. Tilting her head back, she looked at the clouds passing by until she heard footsteps coming her way. Turning, she gave a wide smile to the older Gryffindor girl who was coming near her. 'I think I heard the other students say that was Olivia?' she pondered. "Hello~ I'm Elora!" she said shyly giving a small wave. |
We sits with Dora :3 Following the rest of the students out of the castle to get to the barns, Mason had to stop for a moment because his shoe lace had gone undone. He tied it up quickly with a method he had learned from his muggle neighbour, was surprised he had actually remembered it and continued on his path. Once he reached the place, the Ravenclaw raised an eyebrow the moment he stood in front of the new Professor sitting on a throne of hay. Really? Trying his best not to roll his eyes, the seventh year gave a nod at him instead. "Good day, Sir" he greeted before turning around to see where he could sit. Spotting Dora at the faaaaaaar back, Mason walked towards her and sat down next to her. "Can you believe that throne" he whispered, low enough so that only Dora could hear and rolled his eyes. |
mentions of Ace, Etta, Dora, Ollie, Elora and especially Liv ^_^ Plus the professor. She had seen Professor Wayland an awful lot already, given her frequent visits to the barn and Dobby, but that didn’t change Stasya’s excitement over class. It was CREATURES, after all. No matter what, it was going to be her favorite, and she had practically bounced over to the pasture in front of the barn when it was time for the lesson. Maybe she could sneak over and visit her squirrel again afterward, or even sneak him out to watch the lesson. It was something she’d figure out after she got there, and she’d given the professor on his hay throne a big grin. “G’morning Professor Wayland! Is that a phoenix on your mug?” Important questions. Besides, she knew he was taking okay care of her squirrel, so she definitely didn’t mind him. Or anyone who was already seated on the various hay bales. Ace, Etta, Dora and the other housemate she didn’t really know, along with her fellow first year, got waves from her before she saw Liv too. “Hi!,” she said brightly, perching on a bale near the center like the older blonde had. Squirrel-escapes could happen later. Mhm. |
Kimi made his way into where care of magical creatures was held and saw a new professor and said "Good day Professor, welcome to Hogwarts" Kimi waited patiently for class to start |
Humming softly to herself while walking she looked around her to have a early view of the area around the professor’s hut because maybe, maybe she could see some creatures! But while walking she realized that the only creature who was present was sitting in the hay on a… Throne! Hah! How funny! She herself would have done the same thing, IF she would become a teacher someday, not that she ever was planning to do so! No way, too much work if you were asking it her! Reading all the homework made by EVERY student of this school? Shaking her head she wondered HOW much student’s where here anyway! “Hello professor!” She greeted with a big grin. “Nice throne, is it comfortable?” She still grinned while looking slightly jealous because she too wanted to sit on a throne like that and yes, it was still cool if a third year was sitting on a throne! If a adult could do it than she could do the same. Hmpf! |
SPOILER!!: Presh ickles! Making herself comfortable atop her own bale!seat, Olivia beamed at the small Hufflepuff's returned greeting. "It's lovely to meet you, Elora. I'm Olivia." In case she wasn't aware... and it was always appropriate to introduce oneself, anyway! One's name was important. "Would you like to have tea sometime?" ...Oh, that could be quite fun, actually. She'd organize a small tea party for the kiddies. Speaking of kiddies... There was adorable, little Stasya! "Hello, Stasya. Would you like to join us for tea, as well?" Naturally, Liv planned to open the invitation to anyone who wished to attend...because girls and boys could both enjoy this type of thing. No discrimination. After a beat, the blonde refocused on Professor Wayland; idly wondering what creature they'd be learning about today... which reminded her of the drastic lifestyle change she'd been considering. Animal cruelty had never been something Olivia had been personally confronted with, but attending school at Hogwarts had a way of making one more aware. ....How did one become vegan, exactly? Without knowing too many details, she already understood that this would require some type of support group. |
Hay bales for seats? And a throne for the Professor made from hay bales? Hadley grinned. Oh yeah, she was loving this class already. Anyone that made a throne out of hay was downright awesome in her book. She nodded approvingly as she entered the space. "Good morning, Professor Wayland." She gave him a mock curtsy, because anyone sitting on a throne must be royalty. "Is this where you knight people?" Because that was something royalty also did. Knight people. Will you knight her Professor? Hads made her way to find an empty hay bale to sit on and waited for her cousin to join her. |
It was a beautiful day and Shay was excited to be having an outdoor class. She took her time walking down to the barn area, determined to enjoy every minute of her trek. As she approached the pasture that was to be today's classroom, Shay noticed the many bales of hay that were to serve as seats. She wondered if that was some kind of hint........related to the topic of the day maybe?. "Hello professor", Shay said cheerfully. She was rather excited to be working with the animals today. She was also very curious as to which animal that would be. Finding the nearest empty hay bale, she sat down and began to prepare for the lesson. |
Eternally on Chars list of fun classes, CoMC had her skipping over to the appointed meeting spot, and she found a seat on one of the hay bales, waving both hands at familiar and less familiar faces both. Oh and the new professor on his piled up bales, which Char failed to recognize as a throne. He got a wave too though. "Hi professor!" Now what would they be learning today? Something fun, probably! It was always fun! Except when there was too much homework.. but she would remain hopeful and positive about that too. |
CoMC was on the higher part of Noelle's list for favorite classes. She had a way with animals. If it wasn't for certain events in her past, she may have been gunning for a job as a magizoologist instead of an auror. In fact, Noelle had every intention to practice the potion where you can understand what animals are saying. That way, she could practice potions, and hang out with animals. It was a win/win. So heading outside, Noelle giggled when she saw the professor's throne. Nice touch. " 'Morning Professor... er... King Wayland. " she said, giving the professor a little bow just because she was in a good mood this morning, and because he was seated on a throne after all. (Certain potions were clearly working to her advantage). Noelle looked around before settling down beside Shay. "Hey" She said brightly, feeling like her old self for once in a long while. She grinned as she watched Liv Noelle waved to Char and Haddie once settled. Pretty much anyone who looked Noelle's way got a wave and a smile. It was a good day. |
If there was ever a class the young Ravenclaw felt conflicted about, it was this one. The thing was, there was so much potential here, y'know? So much she could hypothetically gain in the way of knowledge but it proved a little more difficult when you had friends like Derf and even RJ that never missed a beat when it came to shooting down certain ideas. Add to that the difficulty she sometimes found in viewing creatures as much more than a means to an end and the conflict was suddenly clear. "Hello Professor." Jessa greeted, making her way across the semi-circle of hay. Etta got a wave as she walked by her, as did Staysa and Rooney's talented girlfriend Olivia. She was super nice--like Roo. It all made sense in her head despite the natural law that dictated opposites attracting. They were probably one of the clearest indications that not everything could be boiled down to exact science but she didn't mind. "If I choose this bale right here, will you make it into a throne as well? I've got no plans at usurping." She simply loved the design and couldn't help think of the added back support as opposed to sitting on that hay that would inevitably see her slouching. "This one too, in case Derf wants a throne?" |
CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES TIME! Derf, as per usual, SPRINTED down from the castle and bolted across the grounds and arrived completely out of breath. Huffing and puffing - OH LOOK HAY! - Derf could have theoretically looked as though he were about to try and blow the professor's thrown down. Only his lungs were hardly strong enough for such a thing. "HI PROFES-S-SSOR WAYLAND!" he greeted eagerly, throne noticed but the second year's blue eyes were fixated on the man's mug. "I-Is that a thunderbird?" he inquired, peeeeeeeeering closer to it. "NO NO NO WAIT! A PHOENIX!!" Pause. "Dowegettohandlephoenixes-s-stoday?!" Please please please please please?? OH, hi Jessa! Thrones? It was just now that the Hufflepuff actually did notice the throne the professor was sitting upon. Did he want a throne? He'd rather a phoenix if they were getting to pick and choose things today, just saying. Finding a spot riiiiiiiiiiight up near the professor, Derf OF COURSE notices Stasya and thew her a BIG grin and eager wave...and then his eyes shifted to Mason and Dora...and Mason was sitting next to her! DID THAT MEAN HE HAD FINISHED ALL HIS PRACTICE HUGGING BOOKCASES AND HAD HUGGED DORA REALLY REALLY GOOD?! But no. Seriously. Phoenixes??? |
Quote:
Finding an empty one next to an older ravenclaw she recognized from previous encounters, she set her things down beside her. "Hi Hadley," she offered a friendly smile. Surely she wasn't saving this seat for anyone, right? Because it didn't LOOK like she was, and even if she was, well, Skylar didn't particularly care. |
Mentions of Liv, Stasya, Derf, and Char Quote:
But the smiling and such paused for a moment because her eyes shifted to Mason when he came to sit beside her. But his comment... she wasn't sure she appreciated the remark. The man was suited for a throne. Look at that bone structure... he was straight for a fairytale. Or a fashion magazine at least. But she kept these things to herself. "Bit pretentious, " she said with a snort. There! Did that cover her tracks? No one needed to know she liked looking at the man. HOW WOULD CASPER FEEL ABOUT THAT?! And now back to waving and such. Yeaaah. DERF! Dora waved to him and then furrowed her brow. Why was he looking at she and Mason like that? How odd. HER ODD LITTLE DERF. And Charlotte... why was she sitting alone? BRO. Dora gave her a smile and patTed her bale of hay by way of telling her she could join. |
Hi Char Olly was in a good mood as he headed out to the grounds for one of his favorite classes. No matter how he was feeling, the opportunity to hang out with the animals always seemed to cheer him up. Olly liked the set up for this class. The hay bales for them to sit on. Were they going to be working with horses maybe? Whatever it was he was sure it would be fun. "Good morning professor," he greeted before heading to find a seat. He selected an empty spot next to Char, hoping she wouldn't mind. "Hey Char," he said with a smile. |
*joins Shay and Noelle* Why all the CoMC professors loved having the class in the morning? Professor Wayland was the third person who taught this lesson for her last six years in Hogwarts and just like his predecessors, this man loved morning class. Probably it was a magizoologist thing. With a flask of hot chocolate on her hand, Ava walked to the barn and found the Professor was sitting on a hay... throne. "Good morning, Professor. Your throne looks cosy, by the way." The Gryffindor commented. She joined Noelle and Shay who was already there. Hello hello... |
Feeling the weight of fifth year already, Althea had literally dragged herself to class, yawning along the way. She opted for something extremely casual that reflected the weather - a pair of leggings and an over-sized jumper - and made sure to throw her hair up into ponytail. Care of Magical Creatures wasn't exactly her favorite class, but she didn't dislike it either. She found the hay bales a bit much, but it was too much effort to form any sort of concrete opinion about them. Offering the professor a smile and a wave, she made her way towards one of the hay bales off to the side (away from people) and sat down. Her fatigue had really gotten the best of her, because if she was more alert she would've definitely noticed her friends (and other acquaintances that she tolerated in an attempt to keep up appearances) and greeted them properly. But, unfortunately, she was too tired to care. |
Kitty made her way over to the care of magical creatures class, humming casually to herself in a peaceful manner. She waved at her friends and moved to sit. "Good morning professor. I like your throne." |
Sitting with Livvy Rooney was just extremely excited to have some of his favourite subjects taken over by new people this year. He loved to experience different teaching methods and how it spurred him to widen his knowledge about things in so many different ways. He gave a wide smile and a wave to Professor Wayland before choosing to sit directly beside Olivia. Roo found it funny that the Professor was sat on a makeshift throne and it tickled every part of his love of the spotlight. He reached gently for the nearest of Olivia's hands, giving it a squeeze and her a gentle smile. "I'm going to build you a throne in our house one day, my love. Not of hay. Of love and long-lasting materials." Because they were in class, he kept his voice quiet to avoid anyone properly listening in and took his hand back to his own knee so that there couldn't be any calls of him being an unsuitable role model. He had a reputation as Head Boy to uphold in his lessons and his extensive love for the Gryffindor girl who had his heart could be saved for hushed whisperings of affection for now. Her jewellery was enough of a permanent show. |
Sully bounced down to the Care of Magical Creatures lessons. She was no good with magical creatures ... her grades thus far in this class clearly reflected that. Now give her a perfectly normal kitten and she was good to go. Ugh, but none the less here she went. Sully noticed hay bales laid out for them to sit on.... she was probably to short to get on the big ones... so instead she just sat on the ground in front of one. Looking around to see if she recognized anyone here. Smiling at the teacher in case they made eye contact. |
Teddy's curls were pulled back into a messy bun for her lesson today. She figured they would be doing hands on work that would be easier with her hair out of her face. She could recognize a few faces from her first lesson. Definitely the couple that seemed to be glued at the hip. Oh the two who were drinking demiguise essence at potions nonchalantly. Teddy took a seat near the professor, picking up the scent of the chai emitting from his mug. Suddenly, Teddy felt unbearably homesick. |
Care of Magical Creatures was pretty much his favorite class, along with a couple other typically hands-on subjects, so of course he was in a fantastic mood as he headed down toward the barn for today's lesson. Oh, hay bales for seats. That gave Henry an idea, but he'd have to give it a little more thought before anything else. Focusing on class though. "Good morning, Professor," he greeted the man with a grin as he passed, then looked for an empty hay bale to sit. There were a ton of people he knew there already, so they all got waves, hi's, and cheery smiles as he walked through the class area. But he ultimately chose a spot by Charlotte and Oliver. "Beautiful day, isn't it?" he offered to the two sitting closest to him. It probably helped that he had been up for a while already, but it truly was a nice day in his opinion. Too bad all his classes couldn't be outside today. |
Grabbing you Althea The awesome thing for him about this class was the fact that he didn't have to be dressed in his school robes. The sixth year was only too happy to be dressed in jeans and bottom up shirt. He was sure to roll his sleeves to his elbows, because really, who wore them down these days? After greeting the professor Bentley scanned the gathering of students. It didn't take him long to spot Thea who he walked right over to. "Antisocial much." He greeted, giving her a bit of a nudge. |
Benny The bright side to being outdoors was being able to enjoy the weather, and in comfortable clothing too. It was one of the reasons why she'd decided to show up to the lesson - instead of skip it like she'd done in the past - and would be more than willing to participate. Mostly. Bentley's voice had startled her, briefly, but she recovered and flashed him a smile. "Don't start, Benny," she warned playfully. "Maybe I was saving my socialness for a certain someone." And, because he'd initiated, she nudged him back. |
Junia liked creatures well enough and the fourth year made her way towards the group, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. Fresh air, familiar faces, and the sight of a hay throne made for a happy Slytherin princess. "Hello Professor Wayland." The fourteen year old curtsied as always and looked around. Still plenty of places to sit. Picking one towards the far end of the semi circle, she headed towards it, waving at friends and acquaintances as she went. |
Actually, quite frankly, Abey didn't believe anyone who said that today was a 'perfect' weather day. After having spent the summer back home, in a lovely HOT country, being back at Scotland was like PRACTICALLY being in the ARCTIC. Or the Antarctic. Whichever was the one with the penguins, because penguins were cute, actually. Anyway, it was cold. No argument about it; it just WAS. So, of course, Abey was all bundled up as he arrived at the Care of Magical Creatures lesson, and unsurprised to find Derf was already here. Abey wouldn't be surprised even to find out that Derf basically slept in the creatures place, except that he would actually be surprised on account of he knew that wasn't true. "G'morning professor," Abey said as he sidled over to join the gathering crowd and took a seat on a bale of hay. Oh! Was that a Junia? It was a Junia, so Abey got right back up again and relocated so that he was sat right beside her. There. Better. |
Brent headed out to the pastures, ready to take one of the first Care of Magical Creatures lessons of the school year. This class was always interesting. There really wasn't a whole lot of discussion, and it was pretty hands-on, so he was cool with it. Reaching the classroom area, Brent grinned at the professor. "Hello, Professor," he said. He wasn't sure if the professor remembered his name or not, but none of the other kids had said their names, so Brent didn't either. He took a few seconds to glance around to see if his bro or any of his close friends were around, but he didn't see any of them. Maybe they'd come sit by him! He snagged an empty bale of hay and got himself as comfortable as possible. Alright, dudes. Let's get this party started! |
Declan was a few things. He was serious and he was tall. He was loyal and he was stubborn. He was inquisitive, quite clever at times, and at the worst of times really really petty. Upon sighting his sister and Bentley nudging each other while he approached the site of the lesson, well, he was possibly reaching the worst of times. "Hey Professor," he greeted quickly and raised a hand as if he was requesting a high five but he did not stop, he did not slow down. Instead, Declan continued to walk quickly towards the hay bales. He moved behind Althea and Bentley and with one long gangly leg, he stuck it between the two. "Hey you two!" Declan wiggled in between, moving his body back and forth until he made enough room to fit his other leg and succinctly the rest of him. After bumping and nudging some more, Declan sat between the two with a satisfied sigh. "Hay, huh? This is bound to make our bottoms itchy." |
Sam always looked forward to getting outside, and today was no exception. With the nice weather, she'd had a comfortable amble down from the castle, although her relaxed smile soon took a bemused turn when she saw the hay bale throne the Professor was sitting on. "Looks comfy, Sir," she commented, as she ventured past it towards the much less impressive student versions. She could have sworn she saw her bestie arrive shortly before her, and was briefly confused before spotting her on the opposite side. "For me?" she commented at the patting of the bale as she closed the gap between them. "Yeh didn't 'av teh." There was space on the other side of Mason, after all. |
Mentions of Althea, Declan, and ugh Bentley. Care of Magical Creatures was an interesting subject, but more, it was a means to an end. Katy didn't mind it, except when professors spent a bit too much time on boring creatures and not enough time on truly interesting ones. It made sense, she supposed, since she wasn't likely to run into cool dangerous creatures in the wild... but she waslikely to find flobberworms in her garden. Disappointing life, sometimes. Katy grabbed a bale of hay near Althea and (ugh) Bentley, giving a cheerful wave and a crossed eye glare respectively. And then Declan got a disapproving and amused shake of the head. "You're not supposed to talk about your bum in public, Kenning Number 4. It's bad form. Use obscure yet colorful metaphors." She settled onto her bale of hay, leaving a spot for Oliver if he wanted one. Okay. Definitely itchy. |
COMC was not a favorite of this one. He really didn't care to learn about creatures. Unless someone was grilling them there was really no point, but since his mother was a BOG member now she would know if he skipped out on classes and for that thought alone he was nowhere. He drug his feet through so that it took longer to get to the pasture. Honestly how many creatures pooped right where he was walking. Even if it wasn't visible there was probably residue that was now on his shoe. As he made his way towards the other students the professor's thrown didn't go unnoticed. Excuse me Professor you are in my seat was what he wanted to say, but it could wait. One day when he was Lord Blaze he'd have his thrown and it would be bigger than that one. Giving a nod to the professor he headed for an empty seat. |
Outdoor classes were most enjoyable…well as long as there weren’t any too dangerous, or too cold conditions to contend with…and so far the day was going well. Cassie made her way down to the creature barn dressed in her comfortable clothes as suggested, her bag of supplies including gloves slung over her shoulder. Ready for whatever lay ahead in the lesson. Upon reaching the pasture in front of the barn, the Ravenclaw noticed that quite a few of her fellow students were already there besides the professor front and center. “Good morning Professor,” Cass greeted the man as she approached his throne. From there, she moved to take a seat of her own from among available spots on other hay bales. There was no readily available clue or notice as to what the topic of the day was so the girl settled for trying to keep her curiosity at bay. They’d find out soon enough, she was sure of that. |
Sam had a general mehness about Care of Magical Creatures. It wasn't her favorite, thought it wasn't her least favorite either. She was just kind of sick of them, being raised on a farm and having a sister and cousin who were just gaga over them. She tended to get into trouble around them too, for doing things like stuffing an owl into a trunk. Which was just the one time, but no one would let her forget it. But one thing that really drove her crazy and made her not fond of the class was the fact that in the past they had been taught some things that were just plain well, stupid. They didn't make any sense, and when she had talked to her sister, who had spent years studying the creatures, had been told that what they learned in class was wrong. So yeah, it was difficult to believe anyone who taught this class. That didn't stop her from taking it though. Nope, it would give her things to pester Emmaleigh about. So she went to class with a smile on her face and greeted the professor with a "Hello" before surveying those already there. It saddened her quite a bit to see that her cousin was already there, and sitting with people. They were supposed to sit together to talk about the class together. Also to help her with things, since he was a super genius in the class. Seriously, having a magizoologist for a mom was sooooo cheating. Instead of sitting with the boy she found herself a seat a little ways over. |
Mentions of Katy, Althea and the Professor Oliver walked into the barn, seeing his classmates. There were so many of them here already and he was hoping he wasn't late already. But it didn't seem like it.. King-Professor Waylan was seated on a Throne of Hay, drinking from a mug. Too relaxed for class to be going. He spotted the seat Katy had saved for him and sat on the hay. Itchy substance that it was.. "Did I miss anything interesting? Any idea what we're studying?" They were in the barn so he didn't think anything too incredible. Unless the Professor was full of surprises. He leaned forward and waved at Althea, There was some other guy there too and Oliver had seen him around but he really didn't know his name.. Barry? Benny? Billy? Nope.. Oliver couldn't say he knew who he was really.. But whatever he was here for class, not meeting people. |
Emmeline sprinted down the lawn towards the creatures area. Care of Magical Creatures was her automatic-favorite class for obvious reasons: taking care of CREATURES! She was so excited to see what new creature they'd be studying today! As she approached the pasture area where class was being held today, she noticed a lot of people were already sitting on hay bales. Oh no! Was she late?! She glanced at her watch to make sure, but no, she was a few minutes early. Thank Merlin... Then she realized that the professor was sitting on a hay bale shaped like a THRONE. Was he like...the king of creatures? Or were they going to learn about a kingly creature? That would be cool! "Hi Professor," She smiled as she greeted the professor, then gave Stasya and Abey a wave. Spotting Derf sitting in the front, she bounced over to him and plopped down beside him. "Hey Derf! Has he said what we're studying today?" |
SPOILER!!: You all!! As the last student took her seat, Tristan stood up. It was time to start the lesson! With a flick of his wand, his hay throne dismantled and neatly stacked itself against the outside of the barn wall. "Good morning, and welcome to today's Care of Magical Creatures lesson!" He paused, and took a breath. "There are many magical creatures that deal with fire in their own unique ways. For example, dragons breathe fire, Ashwinders are born from fire, Fire Crabs shoot flames from their shells." He paused, "But today we aren't going to be working with any of those. Today we will be working with an animal far more majestic, and uses fire in a more unique way." With that, he paused again and whistled a very lovely tune. A few moments later, a beautiful Phoenix flew over the roof of the barn, and soon landed on the professor's outstretched arm. The bird then nudged his cheek in a demanding way. Smiling, Tristan gave him a treat. "This is my Phoenix, Ash. I have had him for quiet some time, and if you have ever come to visit me at my hut or the barn I am sure you have already seen him flying around." He smiled, and rubbed the sweet bird on the neck. "Now that we have him here, maybe you can answer me this question. What magical abilities do Phoenixes posses?" After he asked the question, Ash started to sing one of his beautiful melodies. It immediately calmed Tristan down. Apparently, he was more nervous than he realized. OOC: Thanks for coming yall! Class has officially started so please keep the chatter to a minimum, if you haven't posted your charrie in here and want to, please feel free to jump right in and pretend as though they've been here the entire time. Please remember that if you show up late there will be IC consequences. I will be moving the class along again in roughly 22-24 hours. |
Did she prefer Char or Charlotte? The question got a smile from the Gryffindor girl. "I don't mind, it depends on how much you have to say and how much time you have, you know? Char saves time. You could call me Sharky if you WANT though, sir! Thats my other nickname." She waved at Dora and might have moved when she was joined in there next moment by Olly and Henry. Both of whom she was super happy to sit with, obviously. Both of whom got big smiles from her, but she didn't get a chance to say much. Because then class was starting and they were treated to a phoenix, up close and personal! Charlotte leaned forward and drank in the sight of the beautiful bird. When the question came her hand went up. "Professor, Phoenixes get reborn! Oh there was TONS more to say about them too, but one answer was plenty and honestly that was the most interesting thing about them in her mind so there it was. |
What abilities do they possesss?? Uuuh,....Jonas had to think. Aha! "Their tears have healing powers," Jonas said. "And unlike unicorn blood, the tears heal with out consequence. |
Emmeline smiled at Professor Wayland as he told her she was just in time; it was weird for her to not be at the barn already, so she had slightly underestimated the amount of time it took to get out here from the castle. However, soon Ash the phoenix had her undivided attention; he was beautiful! She liked him even better than the fwoopers. Having practically swallowed Newt Scamander's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them while growing up, she knew at least a bit about phoenixes. Her nanny often said they would run out of Spellotape trying to keep that book's binding on, and her brand new copy from Flourish and Blotts was one of her most treasured possessions. "Phoenixes can carry REALLY heavy loads," she chirped back at the professor with her hand in the air. She glanced at Derf next to her with a BIG grin on her face. This was SO COOL! |
Fire? What fiery creatures would they be working with? Fire crabs? Dragons? Oh! Phoenixes! The Professor even had a phoenix! A PHOENIX! This was the best care of magical creatures lesson ever! Was Derf seeing this? Phoenixes were amazing creatures. Isa had never seen one up close before. Did she know about phoenixes? Of course she knew some things about phoenixes! "Phoenixes are immune to the gaze of a basilisk." They didn't die or get petrified when a basilisk looked at them. How did that work? Seemed like a useful protection system. Did phoenixes often encounter basilisks? Were they immune to other things too? |
If the Professor had noticed the way he had whispered or rolled his eyes, Mason did not care. It was all a matter of opinion and he didn't hurt anyone if he thought the throne was a bit pretentious just like how Dora had said. While he waited for class to begin, the seventh year looked around at the other students when his eyes met Derf's. What was he staring about? Wait, did he expect him to hug Dora?! Because the kid had been going on about it at the library. No kid, he was not going to hug her, let it go. Once class started, Mason looked at the front where the professor was seated and even he couldn't keep his face annoyed at the throne. The phoenix was simply stunning. He had read about them and knew they were extremely hard to domesticate. So when he saw the bird, the way he looked at the professor was completely different because THAT was cool. Not the pretentious hay throne. "When a phoenix sings they give courage to the good at heart but evil will feel fear" he said after he had raised his hand but he wasn't looking at the professor but at Ash. |
She hadn’t missed the fact that the only other person who had commented on Professor Wayland’s cup was Derf. But then, Stasya wouldn’t have expected anything else, considering she knew about his creature love. It was partly how she’d ended up with Dobby after all, at least considering that he’d suggested she rescue a creature instead of wait for someone to buy her one. Even if she’d bought her mama a kitten. That didn’t count. Plus, they’d been right too. It was a phoenix on the cup, although if she’d thought about it, it could’ve been a Thunderbird too. Except there weren’t enough wings for that, but it wasn’t a big picture. She’d given Liv a big nod in response to the older girl’s question about a tea party, too. Of course she wanted to go to a tea party, especially when she knew by now that it wouldn’t be any normal sort of tea party. Not with Liv involved. But first, there was the lesson to pay attention to. Her eyes lit up as the professor summoned Ash from the barn, knowing the phoenix quite well even if she’d normally just watched him from a distance with Dobby on her shoulder. “Phoenixes live for a really long time because, like Char said, they’re reborn from the ashes of their own fires. And also, it’s reallyhard to domesticate one,” she said, raising her hand even as the words had spilled out. The last part of it made it all the more impressive that the professor had one, after all. |
... ........ ................ .....................fire. That was today's topic? Okay. No. That was totally fine. It was just a Phoenix. This was Magical Creatures after all. They wouldn't be dealing with FIRE. Just Phoenixes. That was totally fine. He could do this. "Wands." Cameron said, voice rather void of emotion as he raised his hand. "Their feathers can be used in wands. As wand cores." Yes. That. See? Totally fine. It was just a Phoenix. |
A Phoenix. Wow. Etta simply stared at the magnificent bird in wonder. She had read about it in books obviously but to actually see it.. well, it was way better. She sighed a little before realising that the professor was actually speaking so she shifted her gaze to him, occasionally flicking a gaze towards the bird. Uh. Trying to recollect what she had read before, Etta raised a hand. "Well.. they can magically disappear and reappear whenever they want... that is, they can apparate." -- and she went back to staring at Ash. |
BE STILL HER BEATING HEART! Professor Wayland WINKED at her. At HER. It was amazing, really. HE was amazing. The Gryffindor wanted to hold hands with someone and sing sings it was so purely fantastic. Ahem. But things were happening. Like Sam came to join her. Bestie! Dora smiled in greeting and then nudged her to be quiet when the man began to speak. ...HE HAD JUST SAID SOMETHING ABOUT FIRE!! !! Most amazing classes dealt with fire in some form or fashion, you see. Oh, but Phoenixes. Dora raised her hand before saying, "They can take the Killing Curse and still like... rebirth themselves." Fascinating, wasn't it?! Dora had studied Phoenixes that one year she had been obsessed with them. Mhm. |
Kimi listened to the professors question and raised his hand and said "Phoenix's tears have got really good healing powers" Kimi knew that it had already been answered but he wanted to get his answer in anyway |
Shay was was sitting on her hay bale, pondering the possible topic of the day's lesson when not one, but two of her buddies arrived. First Noelle sat down next to her. Then the two Gryffindors were joined by Ava. "Hey guys", Shay said, glad to be surrounded by her housemates. Shay had no time for conversation because just like that, it was time for class to begin. Parchment and quill at the ready, she began to note the topic for the day, Fire Animals. More specifically, they would learn about the phoenix. Shay had to stifle a gasp when the professor's phoenix swooped down from above. It was truly a beautiful and majestic animal. Lost in the bird's unusual beauty, Shay almost missed the first question. What kind of magical abilities did the phoenix have? Shay raised her hand. "Their feathers have powerful magical abilities. When they are used as wand cores, their wands have been known to have a mind of their own........act on their own accord.". That was really pretty awesome when you think about it. |
She doubted that the hay throne was comfy. Well, wasn't that sitting on the hay for too long could cause an itchy bum? Hopefully not, because in this lesson they did sit on a stack of hay. Ava listened to the Professor once the lesson had started. As the man whistled, she saw a creature flew to him. A phoenix? Wow. She didn't remember if she had seen a phoenix before. The Gryffindor raised her hand as Professor Wayland asked them. "The tears of phoenix are known for their healing properties, especially it's the only antidote to basilisk venom." She answered. Were they going to take care of the phoenix today? It seemed so. |
Hah! A lesson about fire creatures! COOOOOL! This she liked! Grinning from ear to ear she stared with twinkling eyes at the teacher. Everything related to fire was cool and fun! Buuuut… Wasn’t it a little dangerous for the professor to be surrounded with hay while handling a fire creature? Hmm… Slowly raising her hand she answered the question because, well… she actually KNEW something about this! “The song of a phoenix can help somebody in need to face whatever he or she is encountering and he or she will feel strengthened because of it” she said with a proud grin because she just KNEW that she was right about this one. |
HE KNEW IT! The professor couldn't fool him with the whole wait and see routine professors, and adults in general really, always seemed so keen on doing to build up suspense or something. It was like shaking a present on Christmas morning and KNOWING based on the sound what was in but having mum and dad neither confirming nor denying your suspicion. On this was WAY better than unwrapping some paper and seeing a dark peacock blue overcoat neatly folded in a box and THAT was saying something. Derf's eyes were aaaaaaaaall on the professor's phoenix, completely awestruck because this was the closest he had actually come to seeing one in person. Like...liiiiiiiike...he could just reach out and touch it if he REALLY wanted to. "That's-s-s a clever name, professor," the Hufflepuff noted, half listening to the answers his classmates were given - information of which he already knew like the back of his hand really. Ash...phoenix's reborn from ashes...it was clever. "They share a trait with diricawls...the ability to disappear and reappear...only phoenixes-s-s do s-s-so in burs-s-sts of flame...KIND OF like how we travel by magical flame while flowing...only a phoenix can travel with a witch or wizard by poofing with their flames..." He nodded, adding on to what Etta said. "Does-s-s this-s mean you can apparate in and out of Hogwarts-s, profes-s-sor?" Listened to the magical bird's song, Derf was reminded that the song of a phoenix struck fear in the hearts of the impure...which was a thought he just so happened to have juuuuuuuuuust as he looked towards Cameron and saw him looking...uneasy. .........................GASP! Some had already mentioned the song...so Derf was going to elaborate a bit...while staring at Cameron. "Their s-song is-s-s psychological in nature...s-s-since it can either give s-strength and hope to those it sings for OR stir up feelings-s that are either repressed or have been ignored in the heart of s-someone truly evil. Looks-s-s like right now As-s-sh is-s-s singing for YOU, profes-ss-sor...so I reckon you were feeling kinda nervous-s and uns-sure teaching today s-so Ash is-s-s helping you out." He paused a moment to think some more on this. "This-s-s kinda implies-s-s that a phoenix is-s-s too pure and can't EVER be us-s-sed for evil," he added with some enthusiastic nodding - but still totally staring at you Cameron! "The Phoenix Lament is S-S-SUPER powerful form of phoenix song... and can touch the s-s-soul." Which had nothing REALLY to do with fire...which the professor had hinted at being the focus of the lesson...using fire magic in a special way. But he had sort of talked about that too. |
Oooooh, phoenixes? That was good. Mega good, actually. Especially because of the whole fire thing; maybe Abey would be comfortably warm soon if they were dealing with phoenixes and fire. Though one thing did occur to him as he raised his eyes to the flying, singing phoenix, and it was something he voiced as impulsively as he voiced all of his ideas; aka, without raising his hand first. "Aren't they actually really actually mega difficult to dum-ess-ti-cate? Mama said it was really really rare to have them as pets when I asked her if I could have one." That wasn't really a property so much as it was a behaviour thingy, but it was WORTH mentioning because they were in the presence of someone who had an actual actually dumessticated one. He looked at the professor and stamped his feet on the floor to warm himself up a bit. Wayland was probably an actual creatures genius if he really had had a phoenix for a long time. And, obviously, the thought of a 'creatures genius' had Abey glancing across the pasture at Derf, his villain and another actual proper creatures expert. He looked back at Professor Wayland as he thought of something. "My wand has a phoenix feather in it. My last one did, too." Rest in pieces. |
Declan, Thea and Katy? Bentley grinned at Althea. "No need to be mysterious. I am aware that I am the certain that you were saving your socialness for." He got it, he was the life of the party most places. Must be that inner sunshine that his mother always went on about. You know what made hay even more itchy....body heat. Bentley sighed when Declan the older Kenning squeezed in between them. Bigger brother duties. He understood the urge to do stuff like this so he didn't mind it too much. In fact, the 6th year scooted over just a bit to give the boy some space. Wah? Why was the Toussaint girl glaring at him? He flashed her a puzzled look before turning his attention to the professor. Class was starting.... Well there was no need to answer anything else was there? That was pretty much all he knew about phoenixes, so if the professor was gonna teach them more, bring it on. |
Oh wow! They were going to learn about phoenixes. Now that was pretty cool. She'd read about the bird, but hadn't really seen one before. Like many of her class mates were saying they were hard to domesticate, so not many people had them as pets. So to see one in person, was really cool, and Hattie liked it. It was so pretty, though she figured it could probably look ugly too, especially when it was being reborn. Nobody looked pretty when they were being born. Now to think of an answer to the question. She didn't want to seem like she was just repeating everyone else, because what was the point in that? "Like some of my peers are saying, the phoenix tear has a lot of healing power. It can even protect from basilisk venom, which is pretty much deadly in any other situation" |
Oooooh! A phoenix. Oliver didn't think he saw the bird while he was at the hut earlier in the term. Heard it probably but he stayed on the porch, so he wouldn't have known. But it was something special for sure. There were lots of answers going around that Oliver already knew to be true. A younger student he didn't know even mentioned wand cores. He'd just build upon that thought. "They're continually reborn from their own ashes, which kind of makes his name a pun." He was amused at the thought. "And according to Garrick Ollivander Phoenix tail feathers make for one of the strongest wand cores." Which he thought having three in general was a bit... Boring, when there were so many materials out there.. But that was a different talk for a different time. |
Ava, Shay, and mentions of Olly Ava sat down next to Noelle and Noelle gave her a big grin. "Hey you" She said before class was starting and ..... ...... ........ Swoon. A phoenix just swooped in and loved on the Oh right. Phoenixes. "Their tears heal." Noelle said, looking back at the Professor. Swoon. |
So today they were learning about Phoenixes. That was neat, he supposed as one landed by the Professor. What magical abilities did they have? Quite a lot, as his classmates mentioned. He didn't exactly study the creature but read enough books that mentioned them to form a thought on them. "They can form a unique bond with their owner. It allows them to find where they are and when to go to their aid if needed." They were like friendly bodyguards to Kirk. |
Only enough hay to make that one throne? But...but....oh so then he....wait.....that was made by HAND. Jessa blinked, openly confused by the Professor's statement. She'd thought he'd magicked the hay into such a formation, creating more where needed. Even if he didn't have hay, couldn't he still transfigure a throne for her? The girl thought to ask but then he mentioned fire which naturally caught her attention. The Ravenclaw was rather fond of fires. Add dragons--which reminded her she needed to have a word with him once the lesson was over--and Jessa was ALL ears. There was some amount of disappointment at hearing the dragons wouldn't be the topic of the lesson. Unlike Derf and a few others, she wasn't entirely enthused about Phoenixes. They were alright but they weren't the be all end all. "The day they die is called the burning day. Leading up to that, they look absolutely horrid, have feathers falling out and gag a ton. They kinda look like a bird that's been plucked and ready for the last of it." Which was pretty interesting stuff she supposed. As an afterthought, she lifted her hand once more. "Can I watch the next time your phoenix has a burning dad, Professor?" She couldn't remember how frequently it happened but honestly she was hoping Ash was due any month now. |
Was that a phoenix? Olly's eyes widened a bit as he watched the magical bird fly toward the professor. Phoenixes were really cool so obviously this was going to be a really cool lesson. Olly had not taken his eyes off the bird and was not really focusing on anything else, oops? This meant that he completely missed the question. Other students started offering answers but how could he answer a question that he hadn't heard? He tried to listen to what they were saying to figure out what the question was. They seemed to be talking about different things phoenixes could do. "They're really strong," he offered. "One phoenix would be able to fly with several wizards, or witches, holding on to its tail feathers." |
"I don't know if this is actually true of the phoenix, professor," Kyle started, thinking, "But I read that a phoenix can live 500 to 1500 years before it's burning day, so long as something else doesn't happen to it." |
MY NAMESAKE! *flails* :3 So they were talking about phoenixes today? How interesting; Skylar dutifully took notes as to what was being said about magical properties of phoenixes. Lots of repeat information about rebirth and wands and bond with their owner; surely there was something unique that hadn't been said? Pressing her lips together, she blinked thoughtfully before raising her hand, once she thought of something, semi-related, but different. It was related to their abilities. "Phoenixes are immune to basilisks, which would normally petrify or kill people, and they can also take the full front of the killing curse and still be reborn." Like for real, how many creatures could be killed, yet still survive? |

Listening to the Professors question what did she know about these majestic birds. "They have tears of healing power!" She smiled yay!!! She remembered something. "And they can carry very heavy loads right. Weight way beyond their measure." Okay ... maybe that was a bit too much. She could have been wrong about that part. |
Daniel raised his hand as he thought about the phoenix. "They are really loyal to their owners." Hadn't he read that they would do anything for their owner, though he wanted to know if that was the case would they do anything their owner asked them to. |
OOOH phoenixes! New professor was coming out with a BANG! Kane had settled on one of the hay bales near the back - he preferred to watch this new dude from afar and get a scope for what his teaching style was like before getting closer. Smiling, he propped himself up a bit (he was sinking into the hay just a little bit...was his butt getting bigger and heavier?!) and then raised his hand. "They go through a cycle of death and rebirth by bursting in to flames when its time for them to die," he explained. So weird but also totally metal. |
Teddy wasn't aware of the professor making looks at her. She was too busy in thought, dreaming about the days her ammi would make on warm late nights in New Delhi. A flash of red woke her up from her thoughts as she looked up and saw the majestic creature on the professor's arm. Holy Scully! A phoenix. She had never seen one this close. Teddy's eyes took in all the beautiful details of the creature and when it started to sing...she no longer felt so sad. Could they touch it? Her hand reached out slowly, "They have healing powers in their tears, Professor. Loyal, too." Let her touch it, please, please. |
Rooney was confused by the thumbs up from the Professor, choosing to take it as a congratulations for showing up today - as if there would be plausible reason for Roo to forget to come to class. Fire conversation though! He only hoped that they weren't properly dealing with fire because everything around them would go up in flames immediately. And thaaaaaat would be ugly. Was that a....? Oh wow. Rooney was completely positive that he had never seen a Phoenix up close and personal in his entire life and he audibly gasped. This was going to be something that he remembered forever and ever. And when the Phoenix began to sing...Roo froze in his spot, staring ahead, mouth agape. He couldn't even muster an answer. |
Zarina was glad she didn't miss this lesson, especially her favorite creature was being discussed and an attractive professor what could be better? She was sitting there staring in awe at the Phoenix. So they were going to learning about fire creatures? That sounded so awesome. Zae was always fascinated with phoenixes. I mean the creature stood for something anyways, it stood for new beginnings which is what people wanted. Plus Zae was checking out the Professor, he seemed to be cute. She was smiling all giddy like and couldn't help but draw attention to herself by raising her hand. "Professor I know Phoenixes stand for new beginnings like their symbol and stuff. They are also reborn from the ashes like people have said.." She began to play with her hair and put her hand down when she was done. |

Ooo the Professor had a phoenix. Théo was impressed. He had never seen one before and wanted to make the most of it because who knows when he will never see one again. He was still trying to get comfortable on his hay to really think of an answer because everything was already said. And to tell you the truth the only thing he knew for sure was a phoenix feather was in wands and yeah that was about it. Théo just stared at the phoenix in awe. |
Of course anything that involved fire sounded like an interesting subject. But when the professor whistled for his phoenix, Henry couldn't help but gape at the bird a little as it flew to the man's arm. He had never seen one up close before. In fact, he hadn't even known one was here, or he probably would have stopped in to visit Professor Wayland right at the beginning of the term. And even though he had never seen one, Henry thought he knew plenty about them. Perhaps he had stared at the bird too long, especially when it started singing, because by the time he raised his hand, people were already offering the things that he knew. He'd lower his hand, then raise it when he thought of something else, then lower it again when that was offered too. He probably looked ridiculous, raising and lowering his hand several times, or at least really hesitant. He really wasn't sure he could think of another fact about phoenixes that hadn't already been said, but he did wonder about something that he thought of when answers started pouring in. Raising his hand, he asked, "Professor, once phoenixes have their burning day and after they've risen from their ashes, do the ashes themselves have magical properties?" He couldn't remember ever learning about that specific detail, but it would make sense to him considering so much else about the phoenix did have magical properties. And essentially, the ashes did consist of the bird's previous body. |
SPOILER!!: Olivia gave the Professor a grin and responded to his question with a perhaps too enthusiastic 'great'. Before she could say anything else, class had begun. She tried her best not to fidget but the caffeine wasn't helping her in that aspect. Biting her lip, she glanced down at her hands and then to Ace, hoping that perhaps he would have a solution. However, her attention was soon drawn away from her fellow housemate when the Professor revealed the purpose of their lesson today. A Phoenix? Her eyes widened in pure shock. She had never seen one in the flesh before. She had seen them in various textbooks but one... ONE IN REAL LIFE?! This was AWESOME! "WOW!" she whispered a little too loudly. When the phoenix began singing, Olivia felt the affects of the several caffeinated beverages drift away. Huh. How intriguing. She all of the sudden felt very content. Her fidgeting ceased. After hearing several responses, she offered one that she had remembered reading in a book. "I've heard that phoenix tear's have great healing powers. The tears can help someone who is badly injured." |
At the mention of fire the fifth year smirked. Because seriously, what Gryffindor in existence doesn't like fire? It was awesome, and you could do all sorts of things with it. And also, be burnt to a crisp by those dragons the professor just mentioned. The fire crabs sounded cool though, and made her think of a creature from that muggle show. She raised an eyebrow at the word majestic. Please, what was more majestic than a crab that could shoot fire balls at people? Nothing, thats what. She was however, quite surprised at the gold and red bird that landed on the professor's shoulder. That was a phoenix. Just wow. But it didn't resemble the type her sister had back at their lakeside home. Sam couldn't help but let out a small giggle when she heard its name. Ash? Seriously? First of all, that was kind of a lame name, almost like calling a dalmatian Spot.and secondly, Ash AND a fire crab? this was totally that show. She raised her hand, not to answer the question posed to them, because anything she'd have said was already said by others, and it'd be silly to just repeat them. Nope, instead she had her own questions to ask. "Um, so why is the Augurey called the Irish Phoenix? They don't really look alike, besides both being birds, are they related in anyway? And, I know Phoenixes are really difficult to domesticate. Thats why they have such a high ministry rating, right? So then, how did you get Ash?" There had to be some story there. |
Katy smiled apologetically at the professor when she realized she'd failed to acknowledge him before taking her (itchy) seat. Hopefully she could make it up to him by being a super brilliant Creatures scholar. It could happen. She knew stuff. Her chagrin was quickly overtaken by the appearance of Ash the phoenix. A real. Life. Phoenix. In the flesh. In the FEATHERS, even. She applauded as it landed, and then her hand was immediately in the air. Speaking of feathers... "Oh! Professor! Sir!" She grinned at him, all eagerness to share her thoughts. "Some of my classmates are right in saying that phoenix feathers make a strong and consistent wand core, but the important bit is that the feathers have to be willingly given. Like, you can't just pluck a feather and walk away. They're rarely given, I imagine, which makes it all the more special." So. Ash. Want to give us a feather for experimenting? |
Elora went quiet while the professor whistled a tune before a silence filled the air. She looked around the semi-circle curiously to see the how the other students were reacting. However, she couldn't believe her eyes when she saw the majestic bird in the distance. She could but only stare in awe as the Phoenix landed on her professor's arm gracefully. 'I can't believe it. That's...a real Phoenix!' The images in the books that she's read are nowhere near beautiful as the one in front of her. Although Elora listened to her classmates as they spoke. Her thoughts were so fixated on Ash's alluring song, that she almost forgot to answer the professors' question. Subconsciously, she raised her hand before speaking. "I read that some of the most powerful wands come from a Phoenix's feather. For example, like Harry Potter's? As well as when they're towards the end of their life, they turn to ash before being reborn." |
Melbourne had quietly been sitting on a lone bale of hay near the back of the barn – it wasn’t that she didn’t want to participate. She did, she always wanted to participate – it was simply that the short Gryffindor girl had tried to save a seat for a certain friend that seemed to not have gotten the message of hey I have a seat for you if you want it…still, maybe that was because of how off she was today? The normally bubbly girl was yet again silent for the most part. Her eyes transfixed on the Phoenix ahead of her. Rather than answer the question, Mel just watched the majestic creature with a keep eye. It was beautiful, and fierce like she always dreamed of being. Something, that as of today she didn’t exactly feel, not here on a lone haybale. Mel grinned when she heard Elora bring up the phoenix feathers, that little Puffer had done her research. It was so majestic looking – really, Mel just wanted to ask Professor Wayland if she could possibly see if the Phoenix wanted a treat or would mind being held one time or well…not held, but if it would like to rest on her finger the way bird handlers often did…after all, it was a creatures lovers dream to hold and behold a majestic phoenix. |
Rooney + Professor Wayland SPOILER!!: People! While yes, Olivia had expected Rooney to take a seat with her, she hadn't at all anticipated the whispered affirmations of love. Rooney-dearest, pls. She didn't require material things, as she might once have. No, that was a different Liv, from a time before... Affection and kindness were really all she required these days. After responding in whispers, because the Professor was giving Rooney an odd thumbs up, and it had suddenly made her extremely self conscious...the blonde fished a notebook from her bag. The one with Care of Magical Creatures scrawled neatly across its cover. Olivia had been practicing her calligraphy... Oh, and they were getting started. Flipping the notebook to a fresh page, Liv struggled with balancing it in her lap and jotting down whatever important information would be shared. These hay bales really weren't that comfortable, and she suspecting her her bum and posture might suffer from lack of proper cushioning. A massage would be required later on in the day. Yes, luckily their new Groundskeeper had imported a hot spring onto the grounds. The Gryffindor would most definitely be paying it a visit... Maybe not today, but this coming weekend for sure... WAS THAT A PHOENIX?! Forgetting her previous thought-train, Olivia stood in surprise; her notebook and quill tumbling to the ground without her lap to keep in place. She'd never seen one in person before, and had to shamelessly admit that it was probably the most beautiful thing she'd ever laid eyes on. With it's vibrant reds and golds, Liv idly wondered what one went for; price-wise. It was truly magnificent... Yeah, she'd forgotten to offer and answer... What was the question again? Oh, right...Magical abilities. "It's not really an ability, but they can be a person's patronus. So, I suppose they can be looked at kinda like guardians." |
Declan, Benny, Katy, Oliver Althea did her best to not smile too hard at Bentley (she was perpetually disgusted with how giddy she got around him.) And her conversation with Bentley had barely progressed when her lovely older brother decided to interrupt - literally - and sit in between them. What a beautiful coincidence. She rolled her eyes, leaned behind Declan to mouth an apology to Bentley for her brother's obvious attempts to embarrass her, before greeting Declan. "So nice of you to show up to class," she said with a smile - though, it wasn't genuine at all. Katy and Oliver seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, and she flashed both of them a smile before staring pointedly at Oliver for intentionally ignoring both Bentley and Declan. How odd. She turned her attention back to her brother who seemed to be very interested in showing her his cards, which prompted a story about what happened in the great hall and she did her best to whisper back quietly, making sure to nudge him whenever he was getting too loud. The professor had brought out a phoenix, and it caught her attention. She mulled over for a while, thinking of answers that hadn't been said. Raising her hand, she added: "Phoenixes can also leave behind messages by bursting into flames and reappearing elsewhere." She was pretty sure she'd read that somewhere. "Oh, they leave behind a golden tail feather when they do." Yeah, she was pretty sure that was right; and if it wasn't, well, she didn't really care. Without missing a beat, she turned back to Declan to continue her story about Amias' recent disappearance. |
Oh. So the professor had remembered his name. Very cool, Professor. Very cool. There were a ton of students here at Hogwarts. Brent figured the professor was doing pretty good to already know names. His eyebrows raised in wonder as some of the hay suddenly disappeared and literally put itself neatly away. Duuuuude. Magic was so cool! Brent hung on to every word until a really awesome, majestic looking creature decided to join them. Oh, look--it was a phoenix! DUDE...COOL! Brent had always thought phoenixes were really awesome animals. Brent was so amazed by the creature that by the time he figured out something to share, pretty much everything had already been said. Finally, he came up with something to add. Somebody else may have already said it, but if they did, Brent hadn't heard. He raised his hand. "I used to go to Ilvermorny, and one of our houses was named after a creature called the Thunderbird," he said. "The Phoenix is related to the Thunderbird." |
Seeing a phoenix up close was so neat! It really was a beautiful, majestic bird, and Rula briefly imagined what it would be like to own one of her own. Pretty cool, right? But then again, probably not something she'd actually want as a pet. She was pretty content with her cat already, so no need to go to all that trouble. Probably needed to focus on giving an answer...but it sounded like every ability a phoenix had that she could think of had already been said. So maybe she'd answer the next question and just listen for now. |
SPOILER!!: Questions SPOILER!!: Rebirth and symbolism SPOILER!!: Healing tears SPOILER!!: Strong SPOILER!!: Song SPOILER!!: Multiple answers SPOILER!!: Wands and Feathers SPOILER!!: Domestication and Loyalty SPOILER!!: The Quiet Ones SPOILER!!: Other With a flick of his wand, all of those answers appeared on the blackboard. Ash was starting to get heavy on his shoulder; Big birds weigh a lot. He whistled a different little tune, and Ash took flight, circling around all of the students with his beautiful golden tail. Showing off was more like it. Tristan chuckled as the great bird landed next to Melbourne on her hay bale, and took a seat as if he wanted to be a student too! "As you can see, despite being independent, they don't mind being around people, especially when they are domesticated. They are actually very gentle creatures." He paused for thought, "You all gave really great answers. One thing I would like to add on. If you notice, Ash is sitting on a bale of hay...and it hasn't caught fire. From some intensive study and research, we Magizoologists believe that Phoenixes can control the temperature of their feathers, which is why when you rub him or hold on tight to his tail feathers, yes they are warm, but they will not burn you...unless of course he wants it to." He said with a grin. "Now getting into the basics, because you need to know this as well; Phoenixes are native to Egypt, India, and China. And as you already know, their plumage is scarlet, they have a golden tail, black eyes, and a golden beak and talons." He paused and walked around for a moment, "But now I would like to focus on the Burning day. I know we touched on it a little but I would like to know what you know." He paused, pacing a little to get his mind to regroup. "My questions for you are: What do Phoenixes look like on a Burning Day? What happens on a Burning Day and what do Phoenixes look like just after they burn? Could this mean that Phoenixes are immortal creatures?" He paused again, "Now you don't have to answer all of them, and that last question is more of....a matter of opinion." Which meant there was no correct answer to that one. Now he awaited all the answers that would surely rain down on him. OOC: Alright...WOW! I am amazed at all your great answers!! Thank you for participating so well! As stated, you can answer all of the questions, or just one. Whatever you would like to do. We will be moving on in about 18-20 hours. |

Kimi thought long and hard about the professor's question and raised his hand and said "Phoenix's on a burning day look old and have lost their feathers look haggered and have lost the brilliant shining colours that they usually have" |
Etta watched in awe was the Phoenix flew about, wondering if the professor would let her interact with the bird later. She would have to ask him once class was over. She continued with the staring when once again she realised that the professor was speaking. Goodness, she really needed to concentrate. Right. Questions. She chewed her lip in thought for a few moments, trying to formulate an answer before raising a hand. "Professor.. as the bird approaches the burning day, their feathers start to fall out? They become more weak, I think? And on the day, like people mentioned earlier, they burst into flames.. only to rise from the ashes. And professor, I don't think they are immortal.. they just live for a very long time." Etta answered, still frowning in thought. |
Dora was mesmerized by the calming tune the Phoenix sang. A small smile stretched her lips as she kept her eyes Sighs. He was amazing, he was. "I think there is evidence to support the idea of Phoenixes being immortal, sir. They die and are immediately reborn over and over again." She put her hand down after speaking and smoothed her curls a bit. "Has there ever been a report of a phoenix dying? " she asked as she filtered though information in her brain... she couldn't recall an account in anything she had ever read. Perhaps Professor Hot Stuff could enlighten her. |
Burning day discussions were fine and all, but the second year was sufficiently distracted by OTHER thoughts. Besides, he really would only be repeating what Jessa had said in response to the previous question anyway - with a few additional bells and whistles because that was what Derf's did. ...believe that Phoenixes can control the temperature of their feathers, which is why when you rub him or hold on tight to his tail feathers, yes they are warm, but they will not burn you...unless of course he wants it to... Derf's hand SHOT up and he kind-of-sort-of entirely ignored the question altogether and instead propsed one of his own. "Profes-s-sor...you reckon Ash would let me touch his tail feathers-s?" Please? Pretty please? With a cherry on top? He could even attempt to enlarge the cherry with magic! Although chances were he would only manage to blow it up...but it was the thought that counted, right? |
Ah, he'd already burned. That sucked. Merlin knew how long she'd have to wait for the thing to bite the dust again. Perhaps she could go in search of one one day or....was there a way of accelerating the process? She'd have to read up on it a little more. See if the Professor would let her try it on Ash after. It probably wouldn't hurt him. Aging potions didn't do much harm. Jessa sat forward on her bale of her, propping her elbow onto her knee and cupping at her chin as her eyes followed the bird. Her mind wasn't entirely here. Occasionally it took little trips into the 'what if' and soon she could almost see the phoenix burning there before her The question brought her back briefly, but as she'd already explained what they look like on their burning day while answering the last question, she opted not to repeat it again as everyone else had. The immortality question she would take a whack at. "I think I agree with Etta, Professor. Rising from the ashes is likely another bodily function. After a while those tend to come to a stop naturally. I suspect one day it'll burn and just never rise again." Like sometimes the very old went to sleep and just didn't wake up again. |
Extra points for those who mentioned about phoenix tears as antidote to basilisk venom... Hey, that was her! It was nice to know that Professor Wayland rewarded her answer with extra points. Ava listened to the Professor's explanation about phoenix. She had her hand raised as he asked another question. "Well... I think when the burning day si coming, the phoenix might look like it has been sick?" It's worth a guess, she thought. "And I do think that phoenix is immortal due to its rebirthing ability." |
Burning Day Noelle watched the beautiful bird fly from the professors shoulder over to Mel. She wanted to scoot over and touch the bird, but she stayed where she was at. Just look at those colors. Maybe Noelle could get Olly to paint her a picture of a phoenix. She'd hang it up. The professor was speaking again and Noelle smiled to herself as her eyes found him again. She needed to be taking notes, not swooning internally. Pulling parchment out, she begin taking notes on Burning Day. "Its the end and the beginning per say. Ending of a life but being reborn through the flames. The phoenixes burst into flame and out of the ashes, are reborn." Had others said that? She hadn't heard.. she was a little distracted. |
Well, Kirk could see everyone already knew what the Burning Day was, he didn't feel like sitting back quietly though. "I would say a burning day is guessing day on when they're meant to die and burn before being reborn. I think it has to be it's a natural cause instead of an accident for it to be one." Another question though.. As for their immortality? Kirk couldn't help but stare at those who assumed they were. Sure, Phoenixes never stopped coming back, but that was the keyword. At least a few did see it otherwise, "I have to agree with the others Professor on Phoenixes not being immortal, they just have infinite lives. To be immortal you wouldn't be able to die or get in a state of dying. Phoenixes do end up dying when they burst into flames and they are reborn right after as a sort of restart on their new life." That was how he saw it. |

Kyle gave the Ravenclaw some thought. What was the definition of immortality? And what was death? "That kinda sparks the question for me... Do they have partial immortality, then? Because it's true that an immortal being never dies, but a phoenix does on a regular basis. But they have the memories and soul of who they are, don't they? So that part about them is undying." |
question for the prof! The appearance of the phoenix was far more interesting than the discussion at hand, at least initially, and Junia found herself staring at the creature in awe. The feathers in particular had caught her eye and she tapped her fingers against her knee, fingers that itched to draw what she was seeing before her. Really, only the mention of Egypt was enough to pull her back into the present and the fourth year smiled some, giving Abey a nudge. She wondered if he got the same warm feeling inside when the mention of that place was heard. What were they supposed to be doing now, again? The Slytherin tore her gaze away from the bird briefly, listening to her classmates. Hm. Immortality was a big subject to tackle, wasn't it? So big that it sent her mind wandering all over again... "Professsor? I know it's said that a phoenix is, if I recall correctly, one of the only naturally immortal creatures. But if that's the case, why a death day in the first place? And why do they grow old and worn? It seems to me, that like others have said, eventually the phoenix wouldn't be able to be born again. Like, well, the process obviously takes a toll on the creature as seen in the way it looks right before it's death day. Do their cycles get shorter each time around, do you know? Has there been a study on it?" Because maybe one day far, far into the future, the time between cycles is just so short that they aren't able to be reborn any longer. Maybe. ...Did that make any sense? |
Olly's eyes remained fixed on the bird even as the professor spoke again. Even as the phoenix flew closer and landed on the hay among the students. He shifted just the slightest bit closer, even if he still remained mostly in his original seat a fair distance away. And the lesson was still happening. What were they talking about now? Burning day? Olly dragged his gaze away from the bird and now landed on Junia as she spoke. She had a fair point. Did the cycles get shorter over time? Was it like...half life? He glanced at the professor now and raised his hand. "Well Phoenixes can die, can't they? I mean, if someone were to cut off their head or something?" As morbid and terrible as that sounded, he was trying to understand things. "It is possible for them to die, right? But when they do, what form do they take? Do they become ash?" |

"They look awful on a burning day. She was trying to remember what she had seen in books. "Their feather are molting and they don't look pretty at all." Okay maybe that was a little to harsh for the bird, it wasn't their fault after all that they burned. "I think they can live a long time, but no I'm not sure they are immortal." Sully added about the last question. "Professor ... can a phoenix chose to not be reborn?" Sully was trying to think, if they went through too much hear ache could the bird decide when it burned that it wouldn't be reborn? Who knew! |
