Today's charms lesson takes place on a cold mid-February morning, right around Valentine's Day, but don't let the chilly weather outside keep you away! The classroom is kept toasty warm with a few strong heating charms. As you enter, you'll notice the classroom is decorated with paper hearts in honor of the holiday, and the refreshment table at the back of the room is laden with frosted heart-shaped strawberry cookies and hot cocoa for your enjoyment.
The professor stands at his usual place at the front of the room, ready to greet the students with a smile. He looks a little pale and tired, but he seems to be in good spirits today. In one hand, he holds a plastic bowl decorated with hearts. What's inside? More snacks or something else?
As you take your seat, you'll notice a stack of colored paper on each desk. What's it for? Only time will tell?
February meant that the grounds were still way too cold for Emmeline's liking. Since she spent a LOT of time outside going back and forth between the creature barns and the castle, she had gotten sick of the cold weather ages ago. Even the castle was kind of drafty and therefore COLD. The first year was super glad that they had Charms today, because she could count on her Head of House to have heating charms on inside his classroom. Most of the professors did, when they weren't obsessed with having their lessons outside, of course, but the Gryffindor fancied that Professor Marchand's heating spells were just a littttle better than the other teachers'. That could be all in her mind, because Emmeline was inclined to think that professors who specialized in spells were the BEST at them, but she was grateful to be inside the perfectly warm Charms classroom nevertheless.
All of the decorations and hearts everywhere brightened up the room and made it very pretty in the eleven year old's opinion. They did remind her that it was almost Valentine's Day, though, which meant going into Hogsmeade with James. Emmeline got major butterflies in her stomach just thinking about that, so she quickly turned her attention to her professor. She was pleased to see that he didn't really look sad today, just tired. And weren't all grown ups tired a lot? She gave the professor a BIG grin and chirped, "Hi, Professor! Happy Valentine's Day!" Since she didn't think she'd see any teachers on Valentine's day. She glanced curiously at the bowl her professor was holding, but decided that he'd probably tell them what was inside it soon enough. Professors liked surprises here.
The first year bounced over to her usual desk and slid into the seat. She wondered what the colored paper was all about, and hoped it would be for something fun. And not at all related to love or anything like that. She had enough problems not thinking about Hogsmeade with James as it was with all the hearts around.

It wouldn't have been entirely the truth if Stasya had said that she was used to the cold weather. In fact, she wished that she knew the heating charms that the older students used, or the ones the professors used when classes weren't being held outside. But even with all that, she had continued her normal trips out to the barn and the nursery to see Dobby and Albus. When she hadn't been in the kitchens with her cookie project.
With the elves' help, she figured she was confident enough that she could make some for Valentine's Day. For her friends, and maybe some of the professors. At least Mr. Baldvinsson, and Professor Wayland. And her head of house, who got a grin from her as she made her way into the Charms classroom not long after Emmeline had. "Good morning Professor Marchand!," she greeted him, even as she'd sort of beelined straight for the seat next to her best friend. Who got another big smile from her.
She had some experiment cookies in her bag if they got hungry. Ones she'd made, so she felt like even Derf couldn't say no.

The third floor wasn't that far away, but it meant having to leave the common room earlier than usual. Vivian had practiced more charm work during her free time because she believed it was her weakest subject. Also, it was still rather chilly despite it being February and to think it was VALENTINES. Something about her being a single pringle made her a little bitter, but she tried not to mind. It only happened once a year for all the couples so... yeah. Clinging to her sweater, Vivian made it to the last steps up the staircase of the third floor corridor and proceeded to skip towards the Charms classroom.
Aaahhh, heating charms! Lovely. Just what she needed. Vivian walked inside the classroom and flashed her winning Fairfield beam at the man. "Good morning!" The Slytherin greeted and went to take a seat. "Are you okay, Professor?" He looked like he was either about to contract a disease or was already sick at the moment. Poor Professor Marchand.
And stares at the coloured paper on her desk. "And what are these for?" Curiosity, as always. WHY always use the element of surprise? Was it gonna become a thing this term now?

Derf wasn't sure WHAT to think upon stepping into the Charms classroom. Well, save for the usual NOPE that came with food provided by professors.
He was even a little MORE paranoid now since the second task and that daydream potion thingy which made him think about daydream charms and how maybe just MAYBE the professor could make them daydream they were eating something AMAZING but it was actually poison or mud. Although he had had mud before and that hadn't been so bad.
uuuuuuuuuh....right...he should stop looking like a spooked unicorn in the doorway and find himself a seat, right? Right.
The good news for Professor Marchand was that the Hufflepuff had ruled him out of his list of Dark lords and hags. He had a VERY different theory about him and it had been caaaaaaarefully mapped out and charted with the help of his Astronomy textbook. "Hi profes-ssor!" chirped as he slid into a seat all up close to the man and in the general vicinity of Stasya. For observational purposes, duh. "Wednes-sday is-s-s gonna be a big...FULL day, is-sn't it?"

Etta made her way to her next class, trying to look more cheerful than she actually felt. OWLs were just around the corner and she was pretty sure that she wasn't prepared at all. The more she studied.. the less she knew. That was exactly how she felt, to be honest. Plus.. there were boyfriend things running through her mind. But, trying to ignore all the stress, she absently rubbed her forehead as she entered the classroom and immediately noticed all the Valentines Day decorations. How pretty.
She gave the professor a smile and wave, attempting a half-smile. "Hello, professor." The girl sat down at an empty seat somewhere near the front, her eyes on the stack of coloured paper on her desk. Curious. But she had to wait for the professor's instructions to know more so she dropped her bag to the ground and gave Vivi a smile. And Derf too.

Merlin, she didn't care what any of the Valentine grinches had to say, the castle looked wonderful in the pinks and reds and whites that decorated the corridors and OH, the classroom too!!
How lovely.
Jessa all but skipped into the room, in far better spirits than she'd been in for a while. It didn't actually have anything to do with the heart filled day coming up--as for her it wasn't really a special day but circumstances that happened to coincide with this lesson. For starters, one of her potions was starting to show more promise than it had in ages and she and her Head of House were gonna be moving on to their own experiment pretty soon. Just needed a few more samples. It was gonna be wild.
"Hello Professor!" She greeted brightly, a nice little bounce in her step while she headed to the seat close to Stasya and Emmeline. Oh look, Derf was here too....staring....like he'd seen a ghost go human again and NOT told her--but that would never happened. She'd expect full details then.
Jessa turned to the table of treats, levitating a few over to herself. "Strawberry!" She squealed, realizing the flavour of the day. This definitely got her grinning. "Great choice Professor."
Yes, she noticed everything around her and yes she DID wanna know but she'd learned that Professors didn't answer just because you asked. Too hung up on "surprises" or whatever. It would have been more frustrating to ask and receive no answer than to not and simply stew over it herself. "You guys these are amazing." She told her friends, finally biting into one.

This is why the Charms Professor was her ultimate favorite. He certainly knew how to set the mood of his classroom and Skylar was just all over giddy with excitement. Although she was still curious about his well-being since the start of the term, she figured he would tell her if something was wrong, wouldn't he? It wasn't as if this had been their first term together and she was pretty sure he liked her well enough. Maybe.
Taking a seat, she eyed the heart decorated bowl in his hands, offering him a pleasant greeting, "Hello Professor! Happy Valentine's Day," as she then took note of the stack of coloured paper on their desks. Huh, were they going to make origami hearts? Valentine's Day cards? Whatever it was, she was curious, but would wait until the lesson was revealed, because she had little doubts that all would be revealed in good time. It always was.

Today was Valentine's Day, Vivienne's favorite time of year. She had received owls from her parent and lots of chocolate. The classroom was nice and toasty warm. There were hearts hung from the ceiling which warmed Vivienne's heart. She saw the refreshment table had her favorite treats laden with it.
The professor was standing at the front of the class as usual. She was curious what was in the bowl in his hands. Chocolate maybe?
As she sat down she saw a colored piece of paper. A surprise maybe?

You know what Valentine's Day meant to Zoryn A. Spinnet? Absolutely nothing, duh. She was WAY too young for love. The only people she loved were her parents and pet inchworm, Suzy. MHM. And because of this she never really payed attention to the holiday. Not even when Professor Charms seemed to garnish his classroom with all the decor.
The first year entered the classroom with TONS of energy, though. "Yo Professor M, what's up!?" HIGH FIVE, YEAH?????? It was like tradition nowadays.
Why'd he look so sleepy? Was he gonna make class a nap time today? 'Cause Zoryn was WAY too awake for that. And she liked charms. ALSO HI, DERF!!!!!!!!!

Valentine's Day meant absolutely nothing to Nicholas Tate. It was just another day— one where he sent his mother a homemade card, and she owled back some Welsh sweets, and he went on as usual. He had no need (or want) for any love beyond that; it was utterly useless. So when he had shoved his way through the singing telegrams and heartfelt romantic declarations ensuing outside the classroom, he was perturbed to see the colorful paper.
If this turned into some lovey-dovey activity, he was leaving. Understood?
"Hello, professor." Nicky settled in next to some random girl (Skylar) simply for lack of better seating, already counting down the minutes until class was over.

Dora loved all things pink and love related, really. Not that most people would know that or even suspect it. And she preferred it that way . So the whole classroom set up actually illicited a smile from the blonde girl upon her entering. A genuine smile at that. Squinting at the food table, her fear of potion induced anything strengthened, for a moment she then looked to the professor and spoke. "Good day, Professor Marchand. Hope you're well. "
Excuse us for never eating anything in this castle AGAIN.
Moving further into the room she smiled at a few already present ( Emmeline, Stasya, and Derf ). She even paused in front of Etta's desk and smiled wider. "I hope you're well today, " she said with sincerity. They had never really interacted much, but the Gryffindor wanted the Hufflepuff to know she was impressed with her performance in IMPS and hoped she was genuinely alright. ...and that her words conveyed all of those things, although she feared they didn't.
Awkward.
Moving on, Dora opted to sit beside Zoryn ... the girl who radiated energy even from her hair! CUTIE! ICKLE! "I hope you don't mind."
Did she REALLY care if the other girl minded? Nope. Did she really think she would mind? Not at all. GRINS FOR ZORYN SPINNET!!
The Fifth year Gryffindor made her way all the way down to the Charms classroom and made a face when she saw all of the decorations. Why was everyone so crazy about that stupid day? “Good morning Professor,” she said walking to her seat before pausing, “Are you feeling alright? You're looking a bit peaky.” Maybe if he wasn't feeling alright they should cancel class. Slipping into her seat, she looked at the paper curiously.

Charms class! Olivia enjoyed Charms class immensely and as she headed into the room, she noted Professor Marchand looking a little pale....More pale than usual perhaps? Was something wrong? She wanted to ask but decided against it. Also... What was with the bowl? She was sure that they would find out shortly.
She walked over to Professor Marchand and with a bright smile. "Hello Professor Marchand! How are you?" she said with a wide grin. Olivia was glad to see her Head of House. She had almost finished the list of spells that he had given her to practice. Soon enough, she'd have to go see him again and get some more spells to practice.

Slightly put off by all the Valentine paraphernalia, the blonde Gryffindor made a speedy approach towards Jessa, eyes a little wide at the decorations. She shouldn't have been surprised, of course. He was a man in love...and people in love did this type of thing.... It made her painfully self-aware. Had this...been how she and Rooney had been? Olivia suspected Professor Marchand was doing what any teacher would do and dazzling them with a treats and love things, because love was supposed to be so wonderful and shared, even if just among friends... but... Well, forgive her for not feeling that too much this year.
Happy, sure, but...the love stuff kinda made her want to run in the opposite direction right now.
Also, as she stepped deeper into the classroom, the warmer it seemed to get. After dropped her bag on the desk surface next to Ravenclaw friend, Olivia quickly shed her school robe. Whew, now that was much better... Was this what hot flashes were like? She'd been experiencing odd temperature shifts... Probably due to all the potions she was currently on.
Levitating a few treats to her table, as she didn't feel like walking fully over, Liv seated herself, grinning at Jessa. "Looks like a pepto bismol bottle exploded in here, doesn't it?"
And to their Charming Professor (GEDDIT?), the lion lady nodded. "Professor Marchand. You've certainly outdone yourself." Super polite, because he was an adult and everything. She'd not forgotten her manners.

Miss Fairfield was next to arrive. The skipping hadn’t escaped the professor’s notice, and it got a quiet chuckled from him. It was nice to see his students in such a good mood! “Good morning, Miss Fairfield,” he replied, beaming back at her. Blink, blink. Was he okay? Thank you for asking.” He overheard her asking about the paper and replied, “All will be revealed in good time.”

Merlin’s beard! Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne looked as if he’d just seen a ghost… or something scary that didn’t regularly roam the halls of Hogwarts. Gaston looked at him with concern, He reasoned the poor boy was probably still traumatized from the butter accident earlier in the term, and his heart sank. “Good morning, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne,” he said, but the smile he gave him was a little sad. Wait, what did he mean about a full day Wednesday? He hadn’t any big plans… was he supposed to? “Yes, I suppose it is,” he replied, though in truth he had no clue what was supposed to happen Wednesday. And why was he staring at him like that?

Mr. Tate’s mood was a stark contrast to that of most of the class. Gaston was a little taken aback but assumed it was probably because of the holiday. For some people, valentine’s Day was nothing but a bad reminder; he’d experienced that firsthand. “Good morning, Mr. Tate,” he greeted the Hufflepuff with a smile.
Now this was unexpected! Gaston took notice of Miss Umbridge’s smile as she entered the classroom, and the unexpected reaction earned her a beam from the professor. “Good morning, Mi- Dora,” he replied, stopping himself from calling her Miss Umbridge just in time. “Yes, I’m quite well, thank you. And you?”

You're looking a bit peaky.” Maybe if he wasn't feeling alright they should cancel class. Slipping into her seat, she looked at the paper curiously.
Here was another student who didn’t appear too happy. Gaston immediately noticed the face Miss Swynford made but didn’t say anything about it. He could relate. There was a time in his life when he hated Valentine’s Day too. In fact, he probably would’ve made that face too if he hadn’t found love! Instead he greeted the girl with a warm smile, “Hello, Miss Swynford. Yes, I’m fine, thank you for asking. How are you?” Her concern was genuinely appreciated.

Miss Holden’s bright smile was eagerly returned with an equally bright one from the professor. He wondered how she was doing with that list of spells he gave her to practice. He’d have to remember to ask her about it later, but first things first. He had a lesson to teach. “Hello, Miss Holden,” he replied. “I’m fine, thank you for asking. How are you?”

Gaston glanced at his watch; it was almost time for class to start. He was about to close the door when the other Gryffindor Olivia showed up. He couldn't help but noticed that she didn't appear too pleased with the decorations, but nonetheless he greeted her with a warm smile. He overheard her comment about the decorations, and it made him chuckle a little. He supposed that was an accurate comparison! "Good morning, Miss Phillips," he said, returning her nod with one of his own. "Thank you."
Was Miss Phillips the last to arrive? The professor peered out the door to watch for stragglers. It appeared so... With a flick of his wand, the door closed, and another wave made it lock. Gaston moved toward the middle of the room where the students could see him and waited a few moments for quiet. "Good morning, class! I hope all of you are having a wonderful day," he addressed the group.
"I'm sure most of you are wondering what's inside this," he continued, setting the decorated bowl on his desk. "The short answer is... prizes." He pulled what looked like a bright red heart-shaped eraser out of the bowl. "By the end of the class, each of you will get one of these Valentine-themed revealers..." He'd originally considered chocolate prizes, but he knew some students didn't like accepting treats from professors and he wanted to give something everybody could use. "You can earn these through participation, creativity, and good behavior."
He paused for a moment. Did that make sense? Good, moving on... "The other thing I'm sure you noticed is the stacks of paper on each of your desks. anyone care to venture a guess what we'll be using those for today?" he asked. "Examine the papers if you wish, and feel free to think outside the box with this. No answer is too far-fetched!"
OOC: CLASS HAS STARTED! Any late arrivals will lose house points. Feel free to jump in at any time; just pretend your charrie has been here all along. You have ABOUT 24 HOURS to answer this question, and remember, creativity counts more than a correct guess!

Althea conveniently continued to ignore the Valentine's Day themed decor around the classroom. She did appreciate the warm temperature, however, and was happily munching on a cookie while Professor Manchard spoke. She looked over towards the Charms professor and blinked at his mention of prizes. Were they going to compete for them? She hoped not, as she didn't have that kind of energy to do so.
Still, she was curious about why they were getting prizes (maybe the professor was just really in the holiday spirit???) but wouldn't stress over it. With her cookie finished, Althea could now focus on the task at hand. The fifth year looked at the stack of paper, even went and touched them, flipping through a few. Strange. She wasn't entirely sure about her answer, but she raised her hand anyway. "Are we using them to make decorations?" It was the only thing she could think of considering how everything was heart-shaped around the classroom. Maybe they were doing some arts and crafts project that involved folding.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when
Daisy put her hand on her chin, pondering the answer to Professor Marchand's question. Was it a simple thing such as making Valentine's Day cards or something much more...complicated? She raised her hand rather slowly. "Are we making Valentine's Day cards that might do things like play music?"

Zoryn didn’t know what any of these papers were for, but MAN she was PUMPED. Hopefully they’d be learning how to charm FIREWORKS or something SUPER COOL today!!! In hindsight, she should’ve asked Professor Marchand what they were going to learn to do when she first greeted him, but knowing the Professors here… He probably wanted to keep it a secret… Which Zoryn HATED, but also respected (a little bit) .
She BEAMED at Dora Umbridge when the girl came to sit down. ”Nah uh,” she shook her head, patting the seat next to her. ”I was saving it just for you!” Sort of. Well, not really BUT had she known the girl was about to walk in, then maybe she would’ve done so. It’d be nice to have some extra help if she needed it. Hopefully Dora would be willing. Mhm.
Once Professor M began addressing the class, Zoryn turned her attention to the front of the room. ”Are we making paper airplanes???? ‘Cause that’d be SUPER fun!! Not exactly fireworks, but like the next best thing maybe!!!

He's gotta admit the Valentines decor was putting a smile on his face, specially with just a glance from where he sat, he saw they that inspires that smile. V-day prizes? He had to chuckle at that. Like party favors they were. Honestly though he would much prefer the holiday associated sweets. He had nothing to fear of food offered by Professors. He was a Gryffindor not just in heart, but also in stomach.
As for the stack of papers on their desks... well this is a lot of papers for a quiz isnt it? Also best not to mention that in case the Charms man suddenly decides to pop one onto them. He chuckles at Zoryn's suggestion of paper airplanes, heck thats the first thing in his head too. But given the theme of everything he suggested this "Professor, are we going to be creating some kind of origami with magic?"

GUESS? Etta literally had no idea what the papers were for so guesswork was the answer. But, she didn't really understand why he'd asked them to simply guess when they didn't even have a clue? Her guesses were normally not that good either so.. she mentally shrugged and leaned back against her seat, when someone mentioned using them to make Valentine Day cards. Like.. yes, that was a possibility but she hoped that wasn't so. Please, nope.
"Like Althea mentioned, decorations? Since the papers are coloured and the room seems to be filled with paper hearts so.. I can't think of anything else." She answered honestly, absently playing with the edge of a coloured sheet. They were probably going to learn to make decorations with magic.. hm. Awesome.

Valentine's Day was all good and well, and there was love and what not floating around. But Aunt Flow came to visit the day of Valentine's Day, so Noelle was not a happy camper.
Heading into the classroom, she looked at the table of sweets. Oh yeah. She DEFINITELY wanted one of those. More so now than lately. But, alas, she couldn't. She'd been training too hard to slip up. Even the hot cocoa smelled divine. She waved at the professor and went to take a slumped over seat next to Olivia.
Looking at the paper next to her, she figured with the holiday, they would probably be making valentines. Her hand went halfway up because effort. "Making Valentines? Maybe they speaking? Like howlers but... not?" As cool as that sounded, Noelle just wasn't up for it. She would be tucked away in her bed right now if she didn't NEED to be here.
Studies were important.

Jessa beamed at the older girl as she took the spot by her, noting the way she didn't seem too thrilled about the decor but at least not disdaining it like some had. This was fine, Jessa could live with that. Not everyone was into this pseudo holiday and everyone had their reasons.
She snickered at Olivia's comparison of the room to the obnoxiously coloured medication. "Tastes better though!" And for emphasis she took a bite of her tart. They were probably her most favourite thing in the entire world. She'd eat them all day if she wasn't so practical, level-headed and didn't know that she'd become sick and likely grow to hate it--which would have been the real tragedy here.
Her attention returned to the Professor when he addressed the room. They could keep stuff and the stack of paper served a purpose.
Well then. Last time there was a stack of papers, it wasn't particularly spectacular. "We're not gonna be doing more word searches are we?" There were only so many of those before her brain stopped functioning and required a different stimuli.
Really, one in a work was plenty enough.

PRIZES, did he mention?
Vivian was only ever competitive when it came to PRIZES, and she definitely had her eyes on those Valentines stuff the Professor had. Probably won't be much and the Slytherin was a little bit 'meh' about the thought of celebrating Valentines, but she liked getting things for free no matter who tiny it was. But if the prizes were marshmallows, you know, that'd be a different case. She'd want to win them all. But she was a good kid today, and so she wouldn't mind others winning prizes too.
As for the stacks of coloured paper, Vivian half pouted when they were asked to guess. Really? She hoped that it would have been revealed by Professor Marchand himself but, oh well. This Slytherin was no good with the guessing game, but she had to try. After all, she still wanted one of those prizes. "Charmed loooooove letters?" Maybe? It was a good guess, yeah? With Valentines Day drawing really near, it should be ideal. "Ones that sing and chant lovey dovey poems?"
Did she get a prize for that?

She was wondering what was inside the bowl. The professor revealed that it was a Valentine's Day themed Revealer? She swore on her life that she would participate, be creative and be on her best behavior.
She thought that maybe the stack of paper were for drawing but it was a Charms class for goodness sake. Maybe they were casting a charm?
