As you walk past Professor Wayland's hut, you will notice that there is a huge barn not too far away, with the Nursery between them. The barn is a home to many magical beasts, including some hippogriffs, winged horses, and other large and small creatures. In the middle of the barn there is plenty of open space which is perfect for taking some of the smaller creatures out of their pens to play. There are also pastures outside around the barn with fences surrounding it. You can take the larger animals out there and play with them or ride them. There is also a magical barrier that will not allow the creatures to go outside of the fence, for your protection and theirs. Professor Wayland has provided buckets, gloves, boots, helmets, brushes, etc. for you to use. The students and other staff members are permitted to come in and interact with the creatures, but remember to sign a permission slip before coming in.
SPOILER!!: Assigned Stables
Flobberworms:
- Lucy & Ricky
- Matilda
- Jack
Augureys:
- Susie
- Romeo
Fairies:
- One girl fairy (rainbow wings with a purple dot)

Tempt a niffler to come out of its burrow
Play with the puffskein colony
Feed pretty much any animal
Pet pretty much any animal
Try riding the winged horse or Hippogriff (with Professor Wayland's approval, obviously)

OOC: Credit to Charley Potter for creating the above lists, with some slight changes by me! If you need Professor Wayland's assistance, just nudge me
Sam had come directly from checking in on her homework assignment in the greenhouses, so said she'd meet the Gryffindor here. In hindsight, perhaps it would have made more sense to visit Lola there first, but oh well. They could pop in on her on the way back to the castle.
Not seeing her friend just yet, Sam moved along the stalls until she came to the thestrals. A smile curled upon her lips as she leant on the lower half of the stable door and watched Sinatra quietly. She wouldn't mind having a thestral one day, if she had the space to.
Dora was done crying, but her eyes seemed to stay red and puffy thsee days. Ugh. It was embarrassing and gross, really. But! Seeing as it was still cold out she had an excuse to like... pull her scarf up high on her face and her hat down low. And the girl let her hair fall straight today, no curls bouncing. Which likely led to most people not recognizing her.
And that was FINE BY HER!
Finally making it to the barn Dora stopped to see Cherry first and then moved down to the thestrals to Sam. Sidling up beside her the blonde heaved a sigh. "Hey, " was all she said. Depression. What could you do?

Another day, another trek over to the barn and stable. You'd think the Ravenclaw would engineer a more efficient means of getting here by now but it was the same old walking.
The difference with today, however, was that she wouldn't be making use of the shovel. Oh no, she'd stayed up all night searching her charms text and found a spell that actually SHOVELED. It seemed a little useless otherwise but was so effective right now given the previous two days left her arm muscles a little sore.
All she had to do was aim for the dung, make the scooping motion and move her wand in the direction she wanted it going.
Improving her charmswork while getting the stables clean, this was clearly a win-win.
Jessa moved along the stalls, keeping away from the less friendly creatures as she tended to--but it was easier today because of the spell! In fact, in no time at all she was actually done without having broken a sweat. Merlin could she just do this again tomorrow????
Quite pleased with her effort, she made her way to the sheet and signed her name.

That poor girl! Professor Stewart laughed softly to herself watching as Cypress happily gave Emmeline all the licks he could. "Sorry about that," she smiled, "we're still working on getting him to not lick everyone's face." It was very slow going but he was still rather young. Luckily the girl didn't seem to mind it very much and Cypress was happy to get all the attention that was currently being given to him in the form of pets.
"Ah, well at least you know he has a routine he likes to stick to." Which could be both good and bad depending on if the cruppy's routine got in the way of other things that needed to happen. Cami knelt down to give the crup a gentle rub on the ears. "So seeing the name a few times had made the name stick out in your head, nothing wrong with that. Sirius is a nice strong name for a little crup." There was many different ways to name a pet and if she liked her cruppy's name then that was all that mattered.
Seeing the young lions eyes widen at her explanation of Cypress' name, Cami briefly wondered if she had said something wrong. She had only explained the meaning for the name so really there was nothing to be surprised about. "Bonsai and Cypress? Well...I wouldn't call them friends just yet but it's getting there. Bonsai likes most other creatures (when he's not chasing them) but Cy is very active and thinks Bonsai is another cruppy." It was rather comical watching the two right now but she was sure in time they would be very close. Her cat took very well to other dogs, including the Healers two very large ones. "Ah, well chasing owls is what little crups do, they chase kitties too."
Camilla smiled watching how nicely Emmeline was playing with Cypress. The cruppy was so happy with the petting he had barely noticed that his beloved toy ball was picked up. He had caught sight of when it was shown to him, quickly dashing off through the snow to retrieve it and bring it back.
Emmeline was far from being a poor girl; she was a super happy, and now giggly, girl! She couldn't help the giggling, because it always happened when Sirius licked her face, and it was happening again with Cypress doing it too. She tried to stop to speak, though, so she put her hand in front of Cypress' mouth so maybe he'd lick that instead. "It's okay! Sirius did that the first time I ever met him," she confided. Actually, Sirius still jumped on and licked people's faces too, and Emmeline wasn't sure he'd ever grow out of it. She frowned slightly and looked up at the professor, "Are we supposed to teach them not to lick?" She figured Professor Stewart would know. Professors mostly knew what other professors wanted when they made assignments, right?
She shot the professor a guilty look because: "I go change it on purpose sometimes. Especially when I can go visit more, because half the professors want to have lessons outside now." She felt a little bad about disrupting Sirius' routine, but she went down to see him every single time she could, and she didn't usually have too much time between lessons. So when lessons were held outside, she got an extra chance that didn't happen every day, and she definitely took advantage of it. Emmeline gave the professor a BIG grin a few minutes, though, because the professor liked Sirius' name!
Her forehead wrinkled a little in confusion when the professor was talking about Bonsai and Cypress. She tilted her head to the side just a little and asked, "Your kitty chases creatures? Like tiny ones?" That would make more sense. She didn't understand how a cat could chase big creatures, which was what she'd first thought when the professor thought. She'd only thought of mice and tiny ones when she was halfway through asking her question. Oops. But also: "Cruppies chase everything!"
She had another question, too, but she wasn't sure if she was allowed to ask it. Bathing the cruppies was one of the tasks on the assignment list from Professor Wayland but: "Sirius realllllllly doesn't like baths. Can you tell me how to give him one?" She paused for a few seconds, then rushed on: "Idon'twannacheat." She wasn't okay with cheating, nope. If she had to go ask Professor Wayland, she would. But she kind of didn't want him to know that she wasn't having 10000% success with her cruppy, because what if he took him away from her?! The thought was horrifying enough that she gulped and petted Cypress more. She hoped Professor Stewart wouldn't tell him she'd asked. Especially if it was cheating. She didn't want the professor to tell her how to do it if it was cheating.

She was actually excited to be heading to the barn and stables today. After yesterday's success with the shoveling charm, a new door was opened to the Ravenclaw on ways she could go about this and honestly, she was little ashamed it had taken her all of two days to figure that manual labour was best left to the Gryffindors. Think of all the time she could have saved and how much better at her magic she could have become!
Today would be a different spell. One she often practised on the dolls she asked her father to send and would be attempting with the dead creatures she found--note, dead. Some days the young girl found herself sat by the whomping willow waiting for it to do the job it would do anyway, then picking up after it. Nothing wrong with that as far as she knew.
But anyway, animating charm!
Jessa headed inside, dragging the shovel behind her as she typically did. By now, the creatures on the inside must have been so used to her--if not for the fact she was there to see Dexter everyday then for the fact that she was now there TWICE a day until this was over.
Consider her very excited. The young girl raised her wand and took aim at the shovel. "Excito Animans" She concentrated on the task at hand, not particularly surprised when it worked--because this was a spell she'd cast on many occasions. If nothing else, this was easier than the other times because the directions were simpler--shovel. The commands she gave to the dolls were often of a more complex nature and required greater concentration to work.
Jessa followed the shovel down the line, holding up the bucket every time it turned to her to have the dung put into it.
Quite pleased, the Ravenclaw continued down each row and when the bucket got too heavy (not that heavy but any excuse to better her magic, yeah?), she animated it too and simply followed along. Once done, she headed back to the front, ended both charms and signed her name. Such a productive evening!

Dora was done crying, but her eyes seemed to stay red and puffy thsee days. Ugh. It was embarrassing and gross, really. But! And that was FINE BY HER!
Finally making it to the barn Dora stopped to see Cherry first and then moved down to the thestrals to Sam. Sidling up beside her the blonde heaved a sigh. "Hey, " was all she said. Depression. What could you do?
Sam smiled as Ollie emerged from the warmth of her pocket, and climbed upwards towards her shoulder. He didn't venture any further though, since she already held out a hand to one of the approaching thestrals. Really, she should have thought to bring some meat along for them. She couldn't imagine they got the most attention from other students; she seemed to remember not many others in her class could see them.
And there was a Dora. "Hey," Sam replied, a glance to her side quickly confirming the downcast tone in the Gryffindor's voice. The limp hair; and blotchy eyes. Sam hated to see it, and at the moment struggled to find any sympathy in her heart for Mr. Umbridge. Barely more than she had for her own father. This whole thing made her feel angry and disappointed. And above all else, confused. Why would he want to pull her out when she was doing so well? When she so desperately wanted to stay?

"Shall we go see Cherry?"
Dora attempted a smile for her bestie, but she figured it probably mangled on her face. She didn't have the energy to fake it right now. BUT she also knew that her bestie didn't care if she was chipper or peppy all the time. So that was a comfort there. And she needed comfort. Like the hoodie of Casper's that she had been wearing around her dorm all day. THAT had held some small comfort.
"Yeah, we can do that. Or we could just sit here a while," she said with a nod toward the thestral. She knew Sam quite liked them above most other creatures. Dora liked them also. Oddly enough, the skeletal horses made her happy. They were ugly, but beautiful at the same time. That was something everything in the world should strive to be. Balanced. Magical. Unique.
"Have you got any treats for Wasabi?" she asked with a glance back to the ground. She missed the owl, but she knew Sam needed her more. And it wasn't as if the Gryffindor never got to see her. She saw her pretty often, actually. It was just... different that she was no longer her owner.

Merlin was it really the last day already? There were still so many spells she wanted to try, so many different combinations to determine the most effective means of cleaning the stables. She bet Professor Wayland would really have appreciated that. Surely he wouldn't mind if she continued through to the end of the week regardless of how many days had already gone. It would only benefit him.
Today the Ravenclaw strolled into the stables right behind her animated shovel and bucket. She'd been so pleased with how efficiently the work had been done just the day before that she figured she would continue along the same wavelength.
Like before, she got them scooping but the thing was, today she'd duplicated the shovel all of SIX times and had charmed them ALL to shovel at the same time.
It was a tiny orchestra of shoveling sounds or a dance recital with shovels perfectly in sync. Not gonna lie, it took some serious coordination and a lot of practice with pretend shovels back in her own dorm before bed but she was ridiculously proud to see her handiwork in action like that. Was there ever a more organized way of working?? Merlin's beard she could stand and watch them all day....but there was no need.
Seven shovels definitely got the job done faster. She didn't even notice when the last of the dung had been scooped. Wow, how wild was that?
Ending all charms, Jessa headed to the front to sign her name before turning to gaze at her work once more. This may have been the cleanest she'd gotten it to be honest.

Not bad different. Just DIFFERENT.
The attempt at a smile just caused a frown to wrinkle on Sam's forehead. Not a judgemental one, by any means; one that said there was no need. Sam understood. Faking it was not needed around her. Sure, she'd try to lift the Gryffindor's spirits, but if she couldn't, then she was still here in solidarity, right by her side.
"That works." Sam was surprised that her bestie didn't want to see Cherry straightaway, oblivious that she'd already popped in, but didn't make a thing of it. She was easy going, and had a feeling that was exactly what Dora needed on a day like today. She slowly drew her gaze away from the thestral, and pulled Dora into a hug. It'd be okay.
It'd all be okay. Sam knew a thing or two about being homeless. And also knew Dora wasn't. Sam's room would always be open to her bestie, wherever in the world it might be.
Wasabi. Sam loved that owl, and the communication she afforded. Although, she struggled to think of her as her own. She still thought of it as a long-term borrowing arrangement.
"Of course." She pulled a bag from a her robes pocket, rolling her eyes as saw a nibbled hole in the corner. "Ollie!" she groaned, awkwardly turning it in her hands so the contents didn't end up all over the barn floor. Her rat scarpered onto Dora's shoulder in response. "Well, at least he didn't eat 'em all. Greedy guts."

Hearing the giggles that were coming from the small girl whom Cypress was having a blast licking all over was comforting. It made her smile knowing that she didn't mind his puppy kisses and affection. "You can try to teach them not to lick others, at least in the face if you like. I'm working on the face licking with Cy, as some people don't enjoy having their faces licked." She herself didn't mind it at all but some others did.
What was that look for? Camilla looked at Emmeline curiously but instantly understand the reason for the look of guilt and smiled. "That's alright. There's nothing at all wrong with getting in extra time to see him when you can. Being a professor I can't always get down here to see Cypress the same time everyday but I try and if I'm already down this way I'll pop in to see him." It made her little furry friend happy whenever he saw her even if he had been napping at the time.
"Bonsai does, yes. Mostly things like spiders or mice...a small lizard." Also birds and butterflies. The Healers two dogs that towered over him but that was simply because he wanted to play with those two. Camilla laughed nodding her head at this comment. "They do, don't they!" Cypress sure did. A stick, a ball, anything that moved. He was a very high energy cruppie but that was what made him so cute.
A cruppie that didn't like baths. The women laughed softly. "That isn't surprising. He's probably more into playing than wanting to get himself clean." Aaww look at her all worried about getting herself into trouble for asking for help! "Asking for help isn't cheating. I bet Tristan would be proud of you for asking for tips on making Sirius' bathing experiences more calming for him." At least she would feel that way. "Why don't you tell me how you bathe him and than maybe I can suggest something that might help?" It would help her to know what Emme was doing first before she went about explaining what else she could do.

Dora noticed the frown, but chose to ignore it and every possible meaning it could have. Sighs. She hated to make Sam frown in any capacity, but right now she just couldn't help it. She was depressed.
Nodding at the other girl, she made to sit down, but was suddenly pulled into a hug. Patting was happening. Back patting. As Dora stared blankly at the thestral. It wasn't that she didn't appreciate the hugs, because she definitely did. It was just that lately anytime someone hugged her she started to cry, and right now she was trying to prevent that. It was almost as if anytime she let herself feel any emotions... she began to weep and wail. Comfort even.
And well, the Gryffindor was tired of crying at the moment.
After the hug ended she attempted a smile once more... and then folded herself onto the ground.
Then Ollie happened. On her shoulder. Dora couldn't help but laugh a little. Just a little. And it sounded off. "I found a bag in my trunk if you want them, " she said as she started to tear at a piece of straw she picked up nearby.

Gaston entered the barn with Raoula, the gray-furred blue-eyed kneazle kitten, cradled gently in his arms. The weather had turned warmer, but he still held her tight against his jacket in case she got cold. He was a very overprotective "dad" to his baby kneazle! The kitten nuzzled into his chest and began to purr as he tickled her behind one of her large ears, and he smiled. Caring for this tiny creature helped take his mind off other things that were bothering him.
He tried to put the kneazle down, but she dug her claws into his jacket, giving a disgruntled meow in protest. Little Raoula clearly had no intention of moving while she was getting petted! Gaston laughed. "You can have all the cuddles you want later, but now you need your exercise," he said, gently untangling her claws from his jacket. Raoula shot him a look as he set her down.
Gaston waved his wand, and ribbons shot out from its tip. The kittens eyes darted back and forth; then she suddenly charged after the ribbons. Gaston laughed as he watched her pounce. She'd gotten so big over the past few months! She was at least twice the size she was when he met her!

Excellent! Kitty didn't mind the visit. "She's wonderful and full of energy as always. Sometimes I wonder what it is that Professor Hernandez used to feed her and what Professor Tristan currently feeds her.'' Kay never had to worry about her baby being hungry; Marshmallow was always so well taken care of.
Ah, so this was just a social call. Kay rarely had any of these from students so she revelled in the change. "I have cookies and cake if you like to have some before we leave. Or if you prefer, you can always return with me to grab them before you go back to your dorm.'' Both items were fresh, baked and delivered by an elf earlier that day. "Indeed they are! Tell me, have you managed to succeed? There are quite some friendly youngsters, even the professors.''
"I've been quite well. And you? I've noticed you've been quite devoted as usual to your prefect duties. Keep it up!'' With a smile, Kay climbed to her feet. "Shall we head to the Barnyard?''
Kitty was glad to hear that Marshmallow was doing well. She knew how much Stewart loved her, and she could understand since she herself had owned nine lovely worms who she'd looked after every day until their release.
"Ooh I appreciate the offer," she said when she was offered cookies and milk. "I'll take some when we come back to the office if that's okay? Thanks!"
Together they both got up and left the office. It was a rather enjoyable walk, especially since the weather was so much better than it was before. As they went outside she saw dark gray clouds in the distance - though these clouds probably wouldn't reach them until it was almost night. Someday she wanted to dance in the rain, somewhere where no one could see her. That would feel liberating, she thought.
She bit her lip when asked about her success on making friends. "Sadly I don't think I've succeeded so far. I mean, we're friendly all right, and I like all of them - but I don't think any of them would say 'Hi Kitty' if I were in the middle of a group. But I'll keep going at it until I have at least one. That's all I need. Then we can write to each other all the time and when I visit America sometime I can visit her or him. I'd love to see Ilvermorny."
"I imagine you must have many of them as your friends," she commented as they descended the steps towards the grounds. To the compliment on her prefect devotion she said, "Thank you. I've been trying. I'll be very sad when Rooney's not here anymore. And next year will be my last year." The thought stopped her in her tracks. Swallowing, she continued walking. "I really don't want to go. It's silly, but I'd like to freeze time to stay a student for awhile more." She also wanted to be old enough to be an activist, but Hogwarts was her home. The thought of not being allowed to come back was almost too much to bear. And she really did NOT want to get a job.

The cookies would be ready for Kitty to take back to her dorm when they got back from the barn. The Ravenclaw would be free to take as many as she liked of course. Kay was always happy when the kiddos were happy. She walked side by side with Kitty and she realised the temperature had dropped a little. "Goodness! I didn't realise it was going to be a cool evening.''
Kitty's revelation made Kay ponder something which she eventually asked. "Do you have trouble making friends?'' She had never wondered this before because Kitty always seemed well liked. She wondered if indeed she had this problem if it were due to her strong support of Muggles or her goth appearance. "I can tell that you're excited to visit America and Ilvermorny. I myself have never been to America and would like to someday.''
Kay smiled. "I do have a few,'' was her modest reply. She inwardly felt sad at the mention of graduating. Each year she would feel this way as she would grow fond of the kiddos. "He certainly will be missed here. As will you when the time comes.'' The woman paused too when she realised Kitty had stopped. "Oh, Ms Valentine.'' A reassuring hand was rested on the girl's shoulder. "Look at your graduation as an opportunity to get started on your career, to follow your dreams.'' She tried to sound positive and upbeat but deep down, she was rather sad. She adored Kitty, you see.
Had they? Kay looked around. Indeed they had arrived at the barn. "Come on. Playing with Marshmallow should cheer you up but you can continue talking to me about whatever you like.'' The professor went ahead to free her crup from among the others, where it came barking happily up to her.

Kay's question on if she had trouble making friends made her realize that she herself wasn't sure what the right answer was. "Um," she began hesitantly. "I guess you could put it that way. Which is kind of strange since I didn't have problems making friends when I started school." Even stranger when you consider how shy she'd been back then. "What would your advice be, professor?" She was glad that she still had all the friends she'd had when she first started Hogwarts, though many of them were now graduated.
Her hands on her shoulder and comforting words did help, but Kitty had more to say. "It's just that deep down I feel Hogwarts will always be nicer than any other place I could ever be. And maybe - maybe I'm wrong, but from a distance it always looks like grownups are much less forgiving with each other at work than you guys are with us at school." It just seemed to Kitty that wherever she was going after Hogwarts wouldn't be as wonderful or magical as what she was leaving behind.
But now that they were in the barn and watching Marshmallow, some of her melancholy went away. "Does she mind being petted?" Kitty asked, feeling very much like touching the adorable crup but not wanting to make her uncomfortable.
