The back of the train is the last to leave the station, and the last to kiss London goodbye. Those who linger here might be sad to see the summer end, or maybe they're just not eager for summer to end and go away from home. It's a raucous area, though, full of fun and frivolity, and the detritus that collects in the wake of all these students.

It was funny how a person could enter your life, and make you see things so differently. She'd gained a lot of family since she'd first set foot on this train, but no-one quite like her brother. She'd barely scratched the surface of understanding him, and the world as he encountered it.
The Ravenclaw waved to Robin until she was sure he could no longer see her, only leaving the window when the urban landscape had given way to golden fields of corn ready for harvest. "C'mon Olly," she said quietly to her rat as she started down the corridor of the train. "Let's go find a seat."
Shay had roamed the train corridor, looking for just the right compartment to invade. Most of those she had passed had been occupied with multiple students who all seemed to know each other. Here she was a sixth year, taking her first ride on the Hogwarts Express. Now Shayla was definitely not the shy type, but there was something about that first school encounter that had her a bit hesitant.
Finally Shay passed a compartment that contained only one seemingly non-threatening girl. As a bonus, the girl appeared to be about her age. She knocked softly and then opened the door poking her head inside. "Hi there", she said with her most winning smile. "Mind if I join you?" Without waiting for a proper answer, the brand new Hogwarts student stepped inside the compartment. Before going any further, she added, "I'm Shay and I'm new here." Surely her potential compartment-mate wouldn't turn away a newbie.

Sam had barely sat down in compartment when there was a knock at the door. She looked up from where she was fussing over her rat, and gave the girl a smile. "Sure...c'mon in."
Not a Hufflepuff, then. "Nice to meet you. I'm Sam. Not new here." She crossed her legs in front of her, and gave Olly a treat from her pocket to settle him down. "Guessing you're not firstie new...where've you transferred from?"

Ok then. Given the go ahead, Shay moved further into the compartment. "Thanks", she said before taking a seat. "It's nice to meet you, "not new" Sam.". Shay couldn't help but laugh at the next statement. "No, I am most definitely not a firstie. I'll be a sixth year. What about you?" Then came the question that wasn't quite so easy to answer. It was rather complicated. "Long story.......but I'm from the United States.......New York actually."
It wasn't that she was trying to be secretive, but she was pretty sure that Sam didn't really want to hear her saga. Then in an attempt to change the subject from her rather unusual educational history, Shay posed a question of her own. "Sooooo, since you're not new at Hogwarts, anything I need to know? I mean, can you give me a heads up on what things are like there?" Before Sam could answer, Shay added, "And where are you from, by the way?" With that, she sat back and gave the girl her full attention.

A smile curled on Sam's lips. Not a firstie...but older than her. "Fifth year." And wasn't everybody's story long in a way. Sam's seemed to be getting longer and more convoluted every year. "That's quite the transfer. I hope you enjoy it here."
In the meantime, inquisition, much?
"Like what?" Sam asked. There were LOTS of things she'd learnt about Hogwarts over the last four years, some obvious...and some not so much. She pulled Olly on to her lap, and let him sniff around her fingers. No more treats for now. "You know about the four houses, right? Though I'm guessing you haven't been sorted yet?"
As for her? Where she was from was not turning out to be the most straightforward of questions. "London," she answered, it being the simplest, and the most recognisable to sometime from elsewhere in the world. "But Hogwarts is as much my home."

He loved the sight of the vibrant red agains the green backdrop of the hills and the blue of the sky. "Besides, i knew you'd find me." which was followed up by a wink.
Churchill's eyes opened upon hearing his own name, he hopped from Oliver's lap onto the floor and made his way to Katy, rubbing himself against her ankles and purring a little louder than before. "Me? A pest?" Faking offense and injury before turning to her cat. "Hello, Miaow." Did he dare pet her?
"You knew I'd find you." Katy scoffed, but she still took up a seat opposite from Oliver and scooped Churchill into her lap. Miaow was off terrorizing Lupin, and she wanted a kitty to snuggle. Miaow was a holy terror and should be allowed to do what she wanted to do.
That was Katy's philosophy on most things. Live and let live, unless it was inconvenient.
"You're always a pest, but an endearing one. Go ahead and give her attention or she'll stay like that forever."

Ah, so Sam was a fifth year. Shay had guessed correctly, that they were close to the same age. Surely she would have had plenty of time to learn the ins and outs of the school. Then the younger girl wanted to know what she wanted to know about Hogwarts. Shay shrugged her shoulders. You could ask that question of 100 different people and get 100 different answers.
When Sam mentioned the four houses, Shay nodded. "Yes, I've heard about them. I'm curious to see where I'll end up. Which house do you belong to?" Were the students really sorted based on the qualities they possessed or would possess one day? That whole sorting process was fascinating to Shay.
And......Sam was from London. "Cool", Shay replied. "I really love It there." For some reason, she had taken a liking to London from the moment she had set foot in the city. More nodding occurred when Sam said she thought of Hogwarts as home. "I can understand that. Sometimes school can feel more like home than home does." Home is where the heart is and all that.

Oliver grinned. "I'm usually the one looking for you so I thought we should change it up a little." Churchill seemed equally relaxed with Katy, he was used to her, trusted her even. But then again he trusted most people. The white cat was very social, loved attention. It amused Oliver for the most part.
"Well, as long as i'm endearing." It was an adjective Katy had applied to him more than once, He didn't mind it at all. "She looks like she's demanding tribute of some kind." Oliver extended his hand to pet Miaow on the top of her head. Chuchill always liked that?
"Excited for term?" Most people dreaded fifth year, OWLs and all.. But Katy wasn't most people and didn't always have such a common response.

Finally, Mel slipped her way onto the floor in front Hads and...what? What did weeping angel statues have to do with anything? "Seriously, have you always been this dramatic, and I never noticed before? Or is this new? Hold this." Hads handed Melon a small, ornate hand mirror to hold while she got out her wand. For a few seconds it simply reflected Mel's face and messy hair back. Then it shimmered, and was reflecting Hadley...? Wait no, her hair was too long. Natalie.
"Hey, Hads, what's....?" Natalie's eyes widened and she tried, and utterly failed to contain her laughter. "Oh God, Mel. What did you do? Tell me you took pictures."
"I did," Hads replied, sounding quite pleased with herself. "Hold still." She aimed her wand at Melon's head. "Scourgify!" There that took care of the glue. Now for the hair. Hadley started to undo the attempt at a braid. Natalie was still laughing.
And then there was a cat. "One of yours?" She asked Ace, but the answer came in the form of a little girl appearing in the door. "Ah, so yours then? Minka? Cute name." That and the fact that she's flopped on the floor for no apparent reason.
He had to chuckle at Hadley's words though. "Point taken Hadz." Always made sense she did. What she's doing right now with Mel's hair though-- not so much. But hey he did hear a voice coming out of that mirror "Is that Nat?-- Hey Natalie!" he called out. He may not be in the mirror's view, but at least she'd know he's there right? Badged or not, Ace always had time for his besties mmhm.
There was suddenly another cat in the compartment though. He shook his head at the Ravenclaw's question because his cat was asleep in the pet carrier. He looked at the young newcomer with a curious grin and was about to welcome her in when Hadley gave the intros. And what an intro that was. Errr boyfriend? Whoah ok. he thought as his brows went up and chuckled for the sake of the newcomer. Hadz was joking right? Well he's gonna play it that way, since she did give out his joke name "Actually its Salander. Tenacius Salander, Gryffindor Prefect, atcher service." he smiled warmly as he extended his hand to welcome the young girl and her cat.

Off to another year. Kane didn't feel nearly as excited to return to school this year as he had last year - but that was understandable. Last year he'd been getting ready to start a new school, make new friends, get sorted in to a new house...it was only natural that this train ride paled in comparison. Finding an empty compartment, he wandered in and plopped down, sighing dramatically as he stretched out across the whole bench.
Maybe he'd just take a nap...and when he woke up, it would be FEAST time. Yeah. That sounded like a GREAT time.

Jason stood on the edge of the train as it pulled out of Platform 9 3/4. His 'mothers', the nuns from the orphanage waved goodbye to him as they looked around at the wonders around them. All three that had accompanied him to the platform had been just as confused as he was on how to arrive.
As they faded from distance, Jason turned and headed into the car, looking for the emptiest compartment possible. There would be time for friends later, but for now, he wanted silence. There was so much to take in. Something about a house to be sorted into, all these books on magic in his suitcase that he was excited to delve into. This was a new world to him and something he wanted to be able to experience for himself, just like he always did.
After scrounging around the car, looking for an empty compartment, but not finding one, he forced himself to enter a compartment with one individual in it (Kane). The boy looked slightly older than him, but not by much.
"Ahem," Jason started. "Do you mind if I join you in here? I promise I'll not be too loud."

It was just that, actually, maybe, he was quite possibly even less eager to go back to school than he had been last year, when he had cried and sobbed and begged mama to be able to stay home with her.
But it was quite a confusing matter really because actually he definitely did want to go back to Hogwarts. He wanted to go back to where he belonged with his cousins and his friends, just like his whole family before him... but he was kind of sort of actually completely terrified at the same time.
His hair had grown some since he had last travelled on the Hogwarts express, and the sun had lightened it just as much as it had tanned his skin. Having spent so much of his time on the beach and in the ocean back in his home country of Egypt, it felt all the more jarring to be back in (cold) England, journeying to (even colder) Scotland. The drastic change of scenery had been exactly what Abey had needed, after the events at the end of last term, but even then he had still dealt with nightmares and panic attacks striking out of nowhere, especially as September had drawn near. But now he would be going BACK there, back to where it all happened, and it... well... it...
It was so hard. And it didn't seem like it was going to get much easier any time soon.
Sat alone in his compartment, Abey pulled his feet up onto his seat so that he could hug his legs to his chest, and rest his chin on his knees while he watched the countryside go by. Hopefully a friend or a relative would pass by here soon, because company was always good, but being right at the back of the train meant that that was unlikely to happen unless someone was looking specifically for him. Abey hoped that someone would, but... well, suffice it to say, thoughts of the monster and the portal and... and everything... hadn't been the only anxieties on his mind lately actually.
He would just wait here, yes. And hope someone he knew would soon turn up. Like a Derf. Yes. He wanted a Derf, and if a Derf did not appear, then he would go looking for one.
... After this anxiety passed. Yes. Maybe.
There was loads of people Derf was keen on seeing this train ride and, while the Hufflepuff certainly was not the sort to rank friends or relationships, he would be lying if he denied that seeing Abey was not at the top of his list. That was HIS Gryffindor and despite all the joyous distractions the summer had provided, the 12-year-old could not shake the fact that Abey was far far away and out of sight. Which unnecessarily triggered THOUGHTS and FEARS that made his palms sweat and his leg all twitchy.
Anxieties brought about by last term aside, the blonde also had THINGS for his friend along with a VERY important topic of conversation he wanted to bring up with the Gryffindor. Dad and mum were always telling him that talking to a third party could help bring about necessary clarity and, well, Derf was not opposed to having a party on the train.
He just wasn't sure what had happened to the first and second party?
Ducking his head in and out of various compartments, his eyes widened in delight and a huuuuuuuge grin spread across his face when he finally found him. "ABEY!"
Excuse him as he leaped into the compartment and essentially tackled the Gryffindor.

As usual, Abey's worries about friends finding him and friends WANTING to find him and actually also being alone for the ENTIRE TRAIN RIDE of course turned out to be almost entirely irrational. Derf's LOUD voice had managed to draw Abey from his reverie at once, and, already breaking into a grin, he whipped his head around to get a better look at his VILLAIN.
Except that said villain was already leaping right at him.
THIS time, at least, it was better because Abey KNEW that it was Derf and that his Derf was going to leap on him and hug him and squish him. It had thrown him just a little bit on the train ride home last term, when said Derf had grabbed him from behind, but Abey had been extra jumpy then anyway. And ultimately actually Abey didn't care at all, because it meant he got friend hugs and they were practically the best thing in the world actually.
"Derf!" Abey squealed, recoiling only a very little bit as Derf pounced, and only as an automatic thing. Because actually he also threw his arms wide and 'caught' his Hufflepuff in a hug as he was, yes, basically actually tackled. "I haven't seen you in ten million years." Not in foreverrrrrrr.

"So excited, yes! Did you know if you do well on OWLs, you can start auditing classes at WizU?" She waggled her eyebrows at him.

Still, he smiled and sat up, shaking his head. "Nah man, come on in," he told him, sitting up so there was actually some room for him to sit down.
This kid looked younger than him, and no obvious signs of house affiliation. "You a first year?" he asked politely. Now that he had company, might as well make conversation!

Melbourne looked up at the sound of a smaller voice calling to her pet…the girl had a strong accent…it kind of sounded similar to the Professor with a Zillion names all Mel did when she walked into the room was give the girl a nod before grabbing the mirror Hadley was handing her…and then she heard laughter.
”Nat! Hi…I miss you…and my hair is currently a Pygmypuff Sanctuary, this is Sherlock,” she grinned as she plucked the little puff out of her hair only to store him in her pocket. Then looking over at Zarina she simply smiled, ”Hi, we have a new addition amongst our midst…I’m” Hadley had jumped in and introduced herself…wait wait what? ”he’s not my boyfriend Hadley, I told you…we’ve not…we’re just we’ve been on dates and kissed a bit” Mel didn’t say that it was nothing because it wasn’t…it was something, but still, it was new. ”I’m Melbourne, and feel free to move Mr. Animal-Hoarder’s pets crates anywhere except the luggage compartment – he’s a bit particular about his pets riding in style.” Mel grinned and felt Hadley’s magic working on her hair.
Oh that felt better, her hair already felt lighter without the paste bits…looking up at Ace, Mel felt her cheeks flush at his reaction. ”Oy! Be careful with those eyebrows they might decide to just recede into your hairline if you keep raising them that hight” Mel smirked over to Ace, ”He’s a harmless prefect…seriously, if he ever gets scary with you just come to me and I’ll set him straight.” Mel smirked slightly and grinned at the new girl.

Derf had remembered the end of term train ride and had actually spent a good portion of the summer doing some reading about PTSD upon dad's recommendation just so he could learn to be a better friend to Simon and Abey. He was feeling pretty confident, although it was going to be HARD to keep some of his enthusiasm down at times so he did not make super loud noises or tackle!hug them from behind or something to trigger bad memories, and right now he was just going to tighten his arms around his Gryffindor so that Abey knew he was HERE and he was STAYING.
"I feels-s-s like that," the Hufflepuff agreed, finally loosening his arms a little so he could pull back just enough to grin at Abey. "How was Egypt? I MISSED YOU! OH I HAVE THINGS-S-S FOR YOU!" Souvenirs from his vacation and such. He actually had the same sort of thing for both him AND Simon...but Simon wasn't here right now.
Technicality.
He wondered if Simon liked his socks and whether or not he was wearing them right now. Abey was his Gryffindor and Simon was his house elf - which he meant in the most endearing manner imaginable.

Was it just him or was there something about Mel that seemed a little..... off? He gave Mel a happy but perplexed grin anyway. "Hey, Ace!" Nat greeted him from the mirror. "Where are you? I can't see you?"
"He's hiding behind the mirror on account of that giant zit on his nose." Hads was joking of course, but Ace didn't know that. And there in laid the fun. "Hold still," she reminded Mel as her fingers worked to unravel the last of her attempt at a braid. "Almost got it. There."
"Be nice." Hadley shrugged and grinned apologetically at Ace. Eh, he knew her well enough to know she was just messing with him. Hads pulled the brush out of her bag while Mel introduced Sherlock to Natalie. "A pygmy what?"
"Think sentient mini-pompoms with legs," Hads explained as she brushed out Mel's hair before she starts re-braiding it.
"...Why?"
"Because wizards are weird." Nat didn't say anything, but Hads could read her twin well enough to see she wholeheartedly agreed with that assessment. And then for the fifteenth time this summer, Mel protested that Ace was her boyfriend. On account that they just went on dates and snogged a bunch. "I don't know...sure sounds like a boyfriend to me."
"It's what me and my girlfriend do," Nat pointed out, helpfully. "Speaking of, gotta go." And then the mirror was just reflecting Mel and Hads, leaving Hads to reflect on how she was pretty much the only person in her group that had never been kissed. Probably why she lived so vicariously through Mel's current soap opera of a love life.
Still..."So, that's two saying Ace is your boyfriend, two against." Hads looked over at the second year that had joined them with her cat. "What say you, kid? You're the tie-breaker."
