Default Ancient Runes Lesson 2 - Growing Up with Berkana, Ingwaz, and Jera

As to be expected in April, rain had been more than prominent at Hogwarts for what seemed like forever. However, yesterday not a single droplet of water fell from the sky. The same could be said about this morning. The sky is a brilliant blue, and not a single cloud is in the sky. All in all, it is a perfect day to be outdoors. Fortunately for you, Ancient Runes has been moved from the classroom up on the fifth floor to the grounds on this fine morning. Did you remember to bring your dragon hide gloves? You are going to need them for class today!

With 10 o'clock steadily approaching, you leave the confines of the castle and take in a deep breath of fresh air before making your way through the Clock Tower Courtyard, past the bubbling fountain, and onto the sagging wooden bridge. You can hear birds cheerfully chirping and fluttering about and see flowers blooming to soak up the warm rays of the sun as a breeze gently blows. You take in that breathtaking Scottish scenery just for a moment, resisting the temptation to stop at the middle of the bridge and show up late to class. Doing so would not work well in your favour.

Once you have made it to the end of the bridge, you see the headmistress standing at the Stone Circle. Her hand rests on one of the large stones as she looks out toward the pathways. One pathway led down to the groundskeeper's hut, another the creature barn, to her right was where the Beetle had been parked, to her left took one to the Whomping Willow, and there were several others that linked to various parts of the grounds.

Hearing footsteps coming from behind her, Headmistress Hawthorne turns around, breaking from her quiet moment of basking in the sun, to smile at you. She makes a motion to a box that she had placed in the centre of the circle, permitting you to approach and take whatever is inside. Look into the box and you will see numerous seeds -- alder, birch, elm, hazel, maple, oak, pine, and rowan -- scattered within. Go ahead and grab a random seed, unless you happen to the able to tell the difference between them, while you wait for the lesson to begin.

OOC: Take note that this is NOT the second Ancient Runes lesson your character has had with the headmistress this term. Also, please familiarize yourself with the Ancient Runes and SnitchSeeker rules before posting. The lesson will continue in roughly 24 hours. The lesson has started. Feel free to jump in!

She got it right technically, so why did the explanation matter? Plus it wasn't fair that everyone had to answer the same question. The seventh years definitely new LOADS more than the first and second years. This was a glaring problem with the education system. Maybe it was yet another thing Zoryn had to add to an endless list of points she needed to bring to Hawthorne's attention.

She even thought about doing so now, but the Headmistress seemed kind of busy. Could they talk about how right Zoryn's answer was again??? She liked that part. And of course the reasoning behind the answer was explained after the matter, but Zoryn honestly stopped listening at that point. There were way too many words. When would they be DOING stuff??? Words were not very effective in her learning process. She was a woman of ACTION.

She was ready to leave the lesson now that they were delving even deeper into runes. The second year didn't want to be here to begin with but she couldn't get Professor Marchand to let her drop classes yet. A TRAVESTY.

BUUUUUUT the bracelets were SUPER exciting!!! She grabbed one happily and slipped it onto her wrist. When they were given the go ahead to venture off and find a spot to plant their seed, Zoryn took off for the path leading towards the whomping willow. Maybe the whomping willow would want a friend? She made sure not to get too close, however, because that tree was FIESTY.

But she did get down on the ground and begin digging a hole. She was gonna make the best friend for the whomping willow EVER. 'Cause everyone deserved best friends. Mhm.
The moment it felt the ground being dug into by the little human, its branches began to swing ominously. Who dares disturb the Willow? Who dares digging up the earth so close to its territory? This land was only big enough for ONE tree. THE Whomping Willow!

It then twisted its thick, knotted trunk. Creeeeeeeeeeeeeeak.

THUD!

It was a warning. Go away.

Patience, dear Hufflepuff, the information overload (it was the Horned Serpent in her) was nearly over.

"Teiwaz, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne," the woman corrected, though she was appreciative of his effort and willingness to try. "And it has a direct connection with the god and warrior Tyr. With that in mind, the rune would be more beneficial in battles to invoke energy for strength and protection, not planting trees."
The second year's mouth elongated into a big ol' "O" shape. Okay. So THAT hadn't been close at all. But this notion of PROTECTION, well, THAT was something he could work with for OTHER reasons and a little nugget of information he tucked away for himself.

"Teiwaz," he repeated with a small nod. Right. But why did it look like a tree if it didn't have anything to DO with trees?

[SIZE="1"]OOC: It is time for the mini-activity of our lesson! Everyone needs to take a bracelet and then go find somewhere, within eyesight of Regina (the Stone Circle is at the top of the hill, but it branches off to many pathways ... to the left takes you toward the Whomping Willow, right takes you toward the Beetle, and down the hill takes you toward the groundskeeper's hut, the creature barn, etc.), to plant their tree seed. Please assume that your character knows how to plant seeds and any necessary charms due to Herbology class./SIZE]
Okay but...none of those runes looked like trees? Did they?!

In the grand scheme of things he supposed it did not matter and he was now reminded of the whole 'never judge a book by it's cover' speech mum used to give him and he THOUGHT he had come to embody. Especially as a Hufflepuff. It was why he such a keen conspiracy theorist, you know? Because THAT was looking at all the possible LAYERS. Like the Charms professor clearly being a werewolf. He still needed to crack that case somehow. Secret hags on staff was almost TOO obvious. Not to mention all the Dark Lords who were totally feeding on all the teenage sads. It was the only way he could make sense of his feelings about the trauma he still felt from last term not being validated, you know? Dark Lords who fed off sads like dementors who fed off happy. MMHMM.

Oh...wait...what?

NOOOOOOOOOOO WHY WAS PROFESSOR DARK LORD HERE?!

Derf had, er, totally not been paying attention again and now wanted to secrete his trousers a little when people began shuffling about....er...monkey see monkey do? Following someone over to the box and grabbing a bracelet, the second year slipped it on his wand arm and then followed everyone out of the stone circle to the three choices of path. WELL THEN THIS WAS A PICKLE! Whomping Willow Lane? Nah. No thanks. He was not keen on killer trees. To the Beetle? That had...potential...because MAYBE he could plant this tree in Valerie Gray's name and she could just so happen to be coming out then and SEE it and it would make her not so sad and upset about things. Yeah, she had kinda sorta crushed his little 12-year-old heart by not dancing with him...but she really just looked like she needed a hug, you know? She had CRIED during that last task and all... But the allure of planting something near the creature barn ultimately won out because DUH.

With his seed in hand he sped off at a trot down the path towards the creature barn. Using his heel at first, Derf made a small indent in the ground and then pivoted to start digging in with his heel and loosen things up. Actually...this would be loads easier if the ground was just wet soooooooooo out came the wand. "Aquamenti!" he chirped - one of the few spells he could kinda sorta of do - and waited for a healthy little fountain of water to sprout from his wand...which he then shoved into the ground for a makeshift sprinkler. He really didn't care if he got wet or muddy sooooooo...down on all fours it was to finish digging his hole all the while being rained on.

Dropping the seed in, he quickly covered it with a healthy mount of mud. Perfect. Now just to turn this off...

"Finito!" he said with a confident flick. Only nothing happened. Um... wait...maybe he had said the spell wrong? "FINITI!" Still nothing...but there was a lot of mud! And the worms were responding to the magical rainfall sooooooooooooo...collecting time?
SPOILER!!: professor headmistress lady person

The woman, since they were all no longer clustered around the stones, pressed her wand against her neck and allowed her amplified voice to echo across the sky. "It looks like we all have, or are getting close to having, our seeds planted in the ground. Now is where the runes will come into play. As you all can see, there are no runes carved on those bracelets you are wearing. What you need to do is place the runes on the bracelet as a bind rune, meaning you will need to remove the bracelet and carve Berkana, Inguz, and Jera on top of each other. Your bind rune should look something like this." She then waved her wand again, this time using Flagrate to draw the bind rune in midair big enough for them all to see wherever they were.

She paused, allowing them all time to carve the bind rune on their bracelets. Regina didn't bother to remind them of the spell they needed to cast. It was one that they were very familiar with by now.

"Now, to activate the bind rune, you will need to chant the following galdr: berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a. You will know the runes on your bracelet have been activated when they are glowing brown. If it doesn't glow right away, keep on chanting the galdr.

"Once your bracelets are glowing, make then cast Herbivicus on the seed you planted. The runic energy coming from your bracelet will strengthen the spell and make it more accurate while ensuring that the tree grows properly without any negative magical side-effects. Sometimes our magic doesn't have the desired effect we want, but the positive energies of these three runes will balance the magic and support the spell in encouraging the seed to grow into a tree at a quicker pace."

Lastly, but certainly not least, was the headmistress telling them what they were to expect. "Because we all are at different skill levels when it comes to magic, how quickly and how much your tree grows will vary. Those of you who are older are more likely to produce a tree that is close to being mature, whereas those of you who are younger are likely to produce saplings or young trees. No matter how much your tree grows, please only cast the spell once. Overdoing it will come with a price."

OOC: We are now moving on to our main activity! There are three major parts that your character needs to complete:
1) Carve the bind rune on your bracelet. Remember to use Intaglio and the rune name. You can only carve one rune at a time, so your character will need to use the spell repeatedly.

2) Chant the galdr to activate the bind rune carved on the bracelet: "Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a." Your character may need to do this multiple times to get the bind rune to glow brown.

3) Cast Herbivicus on the seed and watch your tree glow. Keep in mind that how fast/much the tree grows will vary on the age of your character and their mastery of the runic magic and the Herbivicus Charm. Those who are more skilled are likely to produce young trees to ones that are nearly mature, and those who aren't as skilled are likely to produce trees that are saplings to young trees.
You are welcome to make as many posts as you would like at this stage in the lesson. The lesson will come to a close in roughly 45-50 hours.

Okay...WHAT?

Still on all fours in the mud - sorry house elves who would have to do his laundry later! - Derf LITERALLY faceplanted when the Headmistress' voice came suddenly booming over the grounds. Lifting his head and spitting out a mouthful of mud, the Hufflpuff was positively covered in the moist brown glop and his hair looked like golden straw sticking out.

"HUH?!"

Was there anyone nearby who could...repeat some of that to him? Wiping his eyes with his hands so he could SEE. Which was a good thing because he could see the flaming symbol in the air juuuuuuuuuuust fine now. Only problem was that he, er, really couldn't remember what all the runes were supposed to be. Maybe he could...er...figure it out by looking at that thingy?

Jerra? JERRA!

Sitting down in the mud - because really there was no point in even trying to stay clean at this point - and wand still...or, right, he needed to stop THAT first.

"Little help? S-Someone?"

La la la digging a hole for the willow's newest friend!!! Zoryn was SO surprised to see that no one else chose the way near the willow, but this didn't stop Zoryn from her work. With the whole dug up, she dropped the little seed in and started covering it back up with-- "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Yup.

That just happened.

And the second year ran all the way back to where the Headmistress was standing. Whilst screaming at the top of her lungs. The entire way down.

"AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

Uh. She'd definitely need another seed....

Covered from heat to toe in mud still - minus around the eyes so he kinda looked like Chloe's raccoon...only not really - Derf was still fussing with his wand trying to get his Aguamenti sprinkler to turn OFF when he heard the unmistakable sound of Zoryn screaming.

And all color drained from his face.

It was happening again, wasn't it? The portal. The Monster.

Derf stood there frozen in spot for another five seconds before he went SPRINTING towards the source of the voice - and Headmistress by proxy which was convenient considering he had remember precisely zero of the instructions given - and entirely abandoned his seed buried several inches deep in mud.

"I'M COMING ZORYN! I'M COMING!"

Sprinting, huffing and puffing, caked in mud, holding his wand in his hand while it continued to produce water like a little personalized sprinkler...the second year was certainly no knight in shining armor but he was TRYING!

Vivienne was close to having her seeds planted. Now it was time to use the runes.

Quote:
As you all can recognize, there are no runes cut on jewelry you are dressing.
She placed them as a bind rune and carved Berkana, Inguz, and Jera on top of each other. She looked at the board and followed the inscription.

Next she chanted the galdr: berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a. Folllowing that the runes glowed brown. She was hoping she did it right.

Next she cast Herbivicus on her seed. The spell strengthened the seed and she didn't want anything negative to happen. She wanted it to be positive and strong.

She was at a beginner skill level, being a first year. She didn't want any backfires.

Seeing everyone get to work (or at least try to), Regina was about to go make her rounds to see how they all were progressing and whether or not they had questions that needed answering or clarification on the instructions. Since the Beetle was closer, she turned in that direction and made the first few steps along that path.

But the screaming made her stop dead in her tracks. Out of instinct, her body whipped around one-hundred and eighty degrees with her wand at the ready. There were a million things that could have caused someone to scream. Perhaps someone had been bitten by a gnome or something?

Or it simply was Zoryn Spinnet running toward her along the path that led to the Whomping Willow. Merlin. Had she gotten too close? Did the Willow give the girl a smack with one of its branches?

"Hold your hippogriffs, Miss Spinnet. Calm down now," Regina said, placing a hand on the Gryffindor's shoulder. The woman quickly looked her over. She didn't look like the tree had crushed her. She didn't even have a single scratch on her. "You're okay, Zoryn. What --"

Her attention set on the second year was then taken by the creature-loving Hufflepuff who, apparently, was coming to save the day. The woman's eyes widened at the sight of the boy, looking more like he had been bathing himself in mud rather than planting a tree. Regina muttered something under her breath, resisting the urge to move a hand to her forehead and shake her head. What was going on with these second years?

"Everything is okay, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne," she reassured him, still staring at . "Miss Spinnet just ... well, what happened, Miss Spinnet? ... And what in Merlin's beard happened to you, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne?" Did it have anything to do with the fact that his wand was still producing water? The woman signed. How could he have forgotten such a simple charm? "Finite will help with your water issue, by the way."

"Is there anything I can help you two with?"

As Zoryn ran back to the starting point, she heard Derf calling out and running in from the other direction. The second year didn’t exactly know why Derf was coming BUT she appreciated it nevertheless! And unless the whomping willow had been following her down the path, then really there was no immediate danger any more. But Zoryn still screamed. Most because she could.

She had made it to the Headmistress only a few strides before Derf had and took a good seven seconds of her life to huff ’n puff and slow her heart rate down just a tad. That was SO exhilarating !!!! And the next thing she knew, she was being asked LOADS of question. Ahuuum. Hi.

“I was almost MURDERED!!” She nodded and looked at the Headmistress with BIG eyes. It was dramatic, yes. But Zoryn truly believed her own words. “I was just planting my seed and I was near the willow ‘cause I thought he could use a friend and I didn’t even get THAT close, but then it just SWUNG at me and I ALMOST DIED.”

G A S P.

That would’ve been SO AWFUL. Also, “So much mud,” she wiped a finger along Derf’s cheek, leaving a mudless streak across his face. What happened to him? “Thanks for saving me,” she whispered. It was the thought that counts.

“Only if you can authorize restraining orders, Headmistress-Professor,” she was hopeful. ‘Cause Zoryn wanted one for that MURDEROUS TREE. Oh and "Also,
I lost my seed."
. Maybe some snacks. Could they also have help with the homework? ‘Cause that was always hard. Zoryn actual had a list of things she could use help with. But she kept it short for the moment being.

A pair of blue pixies smiled devilishly at each other before returning their gaze to the humans that had wandered off near the hut. Though they hadn't done anything to disturb them, the pixies were bored and wanted to have a little fun.

They noticed one girl in between the hut and the barn, but it was the older one that they were going to target. Since she was fiddling with her charms, it made easy work for them.

Quickly fluttering their wings, the dove toward her and started pulling at her hair.

"EHEHEHEHEHEH!"

Once Kitty was finished burying her pine seed, she pointed her wand at the spot and said, "Aguamenti." A small stream of water poured from the end of her wand and bathed that area of the ground in water. "Finite!"

So far so good. Next she would carve the three runes, starting with Berkana. The instructions were extremely complicated and unfortunately her quick quotes quill hadn't been able to record from the start. But she'd do her best with what she'd heard and then ask for more directions. "Intaglio Berkana!"

Last time she'd tried to help a classmate being attacked by a wild creature, it had also been an ancient runes class and the boy she'd been trying to help (Derf) had intentionally rolled in the way of her spell so she ended up hurting more than helping. (And she'd clumsily left him behind after stunning him. Ugh!)

Not wanting to repeat the same scenario, Kitty decided against shooting a spell from this distance. Instead she picked up her wand and strode over to Skylar and the Pixies. "Hey! Leave her alone!" she shouted, pointing her wand at the Pixies to distract them.

Default Zoryn & Headmistress ^^
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf

Unconditional relief washed over the Hufflepuff when he saw that his friend was okay AND there was no monster or anything like it in sight. Well, with the exception of Dark Lord Myers and...well...he was trying not to spiral too far with the Professor Headmistress lady because she had made him a winged horse whisperer so...bias had been had.

"I heard s-screaming," he nodded faintly, ruffling his hair with his muddy hands. "Thought that maybe..." Never mind. It didn't matter. He wasn't sure he could take the heartbreak of more adults telling him to 'get over it and move on'. "I'm glad you're okay, Zoryn," he settled for, eyes stinging a little, as he zoomed to close the distance between himself and the Gryffindor...basically tackling her in a muddy hug. SQUISH. Muddy and wet too since his wand was still spewing water.

Oh.

"FiniTE, right," he blushed. Or, well, he WOULD have blushed if you could see his cheeks underneath all that mud. So with a flick of his wrist he performed that spell and off went the water. There were a LOT of spells to remember, you know? Professors overestimated everyone ability to memorize stuff. There was a LOT to learn about magic and everything, you know?sdkaaaaaaasdkaaa Derf head was already pretty full of creature information and stuff.

Anyway, his wand wasn't producing water anymore so that was that.

"OH! I s-s-still have extra," he informed his friend as he fished a few extra seeds out from his pocket from earlier. "Mine is in the mud by the creature barn." You know. In case that wasn't obvious.

As to the Headmistress' other question, er, he didn't really WANT to admit to not hearing a single word she had said so...he was going to try and be crafty. "Is-s there...uh...a s-specific order we s-s-should carve that in?" he asked, gesturing to the flaming bind rune in the sky.

Default binding rune by the creature barn
Gryffindor for life Notorious Niffler

As Emmeline listened to the headmistress's super-loud voice and looked at the big, burning red binding rune in the sky, she felt her expression falling into one of dread. This was going to be even more complicated than she'd thought when she was planting her seed. Carving three runes was ONLY the first step! The first year was super glad that she was planting her tree near to the creature barn, 'cause the familiar sounds of creatures coming from it (plus the thing humming softly in her pocket) made her feel way better about how impossible this was. "They reallllly need to make different lessons for different years at this school," she whispered to the thing in her pocket. 'Specially since she wasn't, you know, in Ravenclaw and this seemed realllly hard. She wasn't going to waste much time complaining about it though, nope!

Emmeline had just slipped her blank runes bracelet off her wrist when she heard distant -- but distinct -- screaming. Had the Dark Wizard attacked someone already? Still clutching her bracelet in one hand, the first year quickly got her wand out and ready and ran towards the sound of the voice. Apparently, Derf had also come down this path and had the same idea 'cause he went swooshing past her so fast that he'd get there wayyyy before she would. Once Emmeline had gotten near-ish to the stone circle, though, Zoryn and Derf were hugging and the headmistress was with them. So it seemed like whatever had made her Housemate scream was over now. The Gryffindor didn't think there was anything else she could do to help the situation, so she promptly turned around and trotted back down the paths to where she'd planted her seed by the barns, murmuring a quick apology to the thing in her pocket as she went.

Right, back to runes. Well, she already had her bracelet and her wand out, so she supposed she was ready to start the binding rune. Emmeline aimed her wand at a blank square on the bracelet, tried reallllly hard to focus, and cast: "Intaglio Berkana!" Annnnnd nothing happened. But that's okay, she knew better than to think she'd be able to carve the runes on her first try. Emmeline repeated the spell five whole times before FINALLY the Berkana rune was all carved in and stuff.

Next one! Aiming her wand at the sqaure that now bore Berkana, the first year focused super hard, waved her wand, and cried: "Intaglio Inguz!" As usual, she had a big fat nothing to show for it. This rune took her 7 tries to carve in and didn't look...quite like she thought it did on the headmistress' picture in the sky, but maybe it was close enough?

She was way more confident about the last rune anyways. This was the one that she could picture super more clearly in her mind, the one Zoryn and she had said earlier, so she hoped it wouldn't fail her now. She tried to think only of Jera and growth and good harvests (she couldn't remember the rest of what it did), performed the wand movement and muttered: "Intaglio Jera!" It was super more disappointing that this one didn't work on her first try after all that concentrating and stuff, but it only took 4 more tries to work! Yesss!

Okay, so the binding rune was carved in. Errr...now what? They had to chant something, right? She couldn't really remember what to chant, though. The headmistress had thrown a lot of instructions at them and her head had been hurting ever since the lesson started. "D'you remember the chant, Luna?", she whispered hopefully. Not that she really expected her pygmy puff to know the answer or even understand her, but Luna did know her name, and started purring a little. Which made the whole thing seem way better, even if she had no idea what to do now...

Default pixies, Zoryn and everything else equals a distracted Stasya lol
Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict

She had thought about following the others’ example and greeting Professor Myers, but before Stasya could decide, she’d noticed the headmistress speaking to him. Of course, she was curious now, but then the attention had gone back to the lesson and she’d had to listen carefully as the new set of instructions was given. That had stopped her from doing much else but scramble for the parchment she’d been scribbling notes on earlier to write things down, sitting on the ground in the dirt, so she wouldn’t have to try to remember it all once it was time to try it out, and she’d added a little sketch of the bind rune as they’d been shown it. Plus, she panicked a moment that she couldn’t remember how to carve the runes into the bracelet. Luckily, she’d remembered it after a second, giving Emmeline and Derf grins as they’d chosen spots near the creature barn too.

Except, before she’d been able to slip the bracelet off her wrist so she could cast the Intaglio spell on it, both Zoryn happened along with pixies appearing out of nowhere and attacking Skylar. With wide eyes, she’d looked in the older Slytherin girl’s direction, since she’d seen both Derf and the headmistress go over to find out why Zoryn had been screaming. Had anyone else noticed the pixies? Besides the Ravenclaw prefect, and her. Pointing a wand at them wasn’t going to do much, but the first year tried her hardest to focus on the lesson. As long as the pixies didn’t come after her, she thought she could manage the spells.

Slipping the bracelet off her wrist, she tried to find the best place to put the bind rune on it, and then pointed her wand at the spot. “Intaglio Berkana,” she said, trying to focus on the rune. Except it looked sort of wonky by the time it finally was inscribed on the bracelet, after a few attempts. Time to move on to the next one.

“Intaglio Inguz.” More focusing, and more trying not to be too discouraged when the spell didn’t work right away. Eventually the rune carved itself over the Berkana rune, still looking kind of wonky but she hoped it would still work. Maybe if all three were wonky it would balance out? And she was going to blame the pixies if it didn’t.

So now it was time for the last rune. “Intaglio Jera!” She tried to focus on the rune, but it still seemed like it took forever before it appeared on the bracelet. Plus, it was just as crooked as the others. At least the whole thing looked like a crooked version of the image the headmistress had shown them, so she could hope that meant it would work. Except she had to go back to her scribbled notes for the chanting thing. Galdrs were hard.

Still, after checking her notes, she tried it. “berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a”… Was Zoryn okay? Was Skylar okay? Did the pixies go away? She was definitely distracted, so she had to repeat the galdr lots of times before she finally got a faint glow from the bracelet. And she repeated it once more just to make sure it was going to stay activated.

Ah, so Berkana was also good for plant life. Isa eagerly took notes on everything the headmistress said. So she was right about combining the runes she was talking about. Two out of the three runes they would be using were ones that she had mentioned. Oooh, yay, rune bracelets! ”Hello, Professor Myers! We’re planting trees!” Isa beamed and waved at the herbology professor. Now it was time to go plant her seed. Isa headed off to near the creatures barn to plant her oak tree seed. Maybe Stasya’s squirrel Dobby would be able to play in the tree. Here was a nice open grassy patch next to the barn that could do with a nice oak tree. Pulling on her dragonhide gloves, she prepared to plant her seed. After digging a hole to the appropriate depth, Isa gently placed the seed in the hole, covered it with soil, and patted the soil down. Then, she pulled out her wand and aimed it at the patch of soil where the seed had just been planted. ”Aguamenti!” Water trickled into the ground. There, that should be enough. ”Finite.”

Okay, now it was time to carve the bindrune, and activating it would come later. ”Intaglio Berkana.”Isa visualized the rune that she wanted to carve and repeated the spell until the rune was fully carved. She repeated the process of carving the rune again for Inguz. ”Intaglio Inguz.” Again, she repeated it until the rune was fully carved. One last time she repeated the process of rune carving for the last rune in her bindrune. ”Intaglio Jera.” A few incantations later, the bindrune was completely carved.

They were using rune magic to strengthen the herbivicus charm! This was so interesting. One of Isa’s favorite runes lessons ever. Time to activate the bindrune. Isa chanted the galdr just as the headmistress had said, being careful to get it right. ”Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a.” It hadn’t started glowing yet, so Isa chanted the galdr again. ”Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a.” After a few more tries the bindrune started glowing brown like it was supposed to. Here was where things got interesting.

Runes activated, Isa was ready for the final part of the tree planting, actually growing the tree using the herbivicus charm. The runes were going to help her. Aiming her wand where the seed had been planted, Isa focused her energy and cast the charm. ”Herbivicus!” At first it appeared that nothing was happening, but then a sprout poked through the ground and began to grow. Up and up it grew, growing larger before Isa’s eyes. When it stopped growing it was a young oak tree. Impressive. Look at that. She had grown that tree all by herself! Isa wanted to try this rune bracelet for other plants too now. There were so many possibilities with the aid of this runic charm. Think of all the things she could do. She could speed up the process of growing her plants from seeds, she could help them live happy plant lives. That would be nice. Isa was definitely going to try using runic magic more with herbology to see what she could do with it.

Was that.... someone screaming somewhere? Oh dear. Hopefully everything would be all right. Maybe she should go check on her friends. Isa glanced around the surrounding area. It looked like everyone around the creatures barn was safe, but she wasn't sure what was going on in some of the other seed planting locations.

Default Post 1 + WAVES for Professor Myers!
Kimothée Chalamet • The UWU Agenda • Once Baby, Now Trouble • All Growed Up

With her seed planted and watered, Vivian looked around to busy herself while waiting for further instructions. She caught sight of her other favourite mentors, Professor Paul, and the blonde enthusiastically waved at him with a beam. Assuming he can see her at grounds near the Beetle from the Stone Circle, that is. "HIIIII PROFESSOR MYERSSSS!" Hopefully he had heard that. She was just a little too hyped because they were planting in Ancient Runes, and he was here!

The Slytherin was shocked when the Headmistress amplified her voice, though. Well, it was expected because she didn't think they had to gather around again for the next set of instructions when they were already in their designated place. Vivian wouldn't have wanted to leave her new plant. She nodded when they were tasked to carve the runes onto their rune bracelets and then looked up to see... a really complicated-looking bind rune floating in the air.

BLINK.

Not wanting for the example rune to fade away, Vivian immediately took her pine bracelet off her wand hand and then proceeded to carve. She knew the incantation, of course, and she noticed that the Headmistress didn't even remind them of what it was. "Intaglio Berkana... Intaglio Berkana... Intaglio Berkana Berkana Berkana...." Vivian kept saying that incantation over and over until the Berkana rune was carved onto her bracelet. One rune down, two more to go! The blonde half-smiled at her progress. "Intaglio Inguz... Intaglio Inguz... Intaglio Inguz Inguz Inguz Inguz...." The Inguz rune was carved on top of her Berkana one, and once finished, the Slytherin took a moment to see if her half bind rune looked somehow like the one the Headmistress had made midair. At least she was right on track! As for the last rune... "Intaglio Jera... Intaglio Jera... Intaglio Jera Jera Jera Jera...." Almost there.

At laaaaast! Vivian raised her bracelet carved with the bind rune, and smiled at it. For someone who wasn't that good in Ancient Runes, she sure was proud of her work. She was successful, and that's what counted in this case.

Fortunately that she's just finishing the planting part until headmistress Hawthorne announced that they're going to move on to use the runic charm. Thanks to sonorus charm that Ava didn't need to go closer to the Headmistress for listening to her instructions. Up in the air, she saw a form of rune was drawn and... Oh, a binding rune. Merlin, it took her a series of galdr chanting until a single rune was active and glowing. Let's just see if she's going to succeed this, and hopefully so.

First, she carved berkana on the bracelet and it took like... five times trying until the rune was perfectly carved. Alright, this would be a loooong work. Next, she moved on to carve inguz on the top of carved berkana. "Intaglio inguz!" And fortunately this one was carved just on her third attempt of carving. And the last one, jera. Ava pointed her wand on the runes and carved the last one. Was her work done her? No, pal. It's just started.

It's time to activate the bind rune.

"Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a." The Gryffindor muttered the galdr. She focused on the energy to activate the rune. It didn't succeed on her first try, so she had to chant the galdr again, still focusing her mind on it. "Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a."

Still no glow, sigh.

Another try. "Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a." Ava put on all her mind focusing on the rune, there was a faint glow on her carving which meant... Not strong enough to activate the rune. Seriously, what had she done wrong? She started to feel her face warmer due to the frustration because her effort to activate the rune had failed. Let's just... Take a break. Ava closed her eyes, took a very deep breath to calm her nerves down, cleared her mind and didn't think about anything but the galdr, tried to channel the rune energy. Once she felt good, she tried chanting the galdr again. "Berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a." Until the bind rune glowed brown. Oooooooh!

Okay, don't be happy. Keep focusing on the bind rune.

Right, now she only need to cast Herbivicus charm. Ava pointed her wand to the ground where she planted the seed. "Herbivicus!" Then she watched the soil glowed, a sprout had appeared and grew taller and taller until it stopped as it became a young tree and reached like seven feet tall in height. Which was, pretty acceptable.

Skylar glanced up from her fiddling to see Stasya had taken to joining her by Baldvinsson's hut in planting a tree and smiled at the younger Gryffindor. She wasn't all too comfortable with Runes, or Herbology for that matter, but if she needed help, she would try. Just then, she stopped her fiddling when she heard a booming Headmistress' voice, for which she was grateful for the use of magic at that moment.

Okay, so time to carve the runes on their plain pine bracelets. That bindrune actually looked really cool and would make an awesome tattoo, except that it meant new beginnings and growth and fertility, all things that the fourteen year old did not really want to be thinking about just yet. Though in truth, she shouldn't even be thinking about tattoos since she wasn't even old enough for that yet either. And in all honesty, she really hadn't been thinking about them so it was weird that it crossed her mind.

Right, carving runes. "Intaglio Berkana," she cast, after removing the pine bracelet from her wrist. She guessed it was more precautionary, because last thing they needed was an accident to happen such as carving onto their wrists instead or maybe half skin, half bracelet carvings.

Abruptly standing up, her third-of-the-way carved bracelet falling to the ground, she ran around to get away from the annoying things when she heard Kitty shouting to 'leave her alone'. Ah, seriously!? "Why are you always trying to fight my battles for me?" Sky snapped at the Ravenclaw Prefect, as she ran off towards the beetle with Ava and Vivian, hoping it was enough movement that the pixies wouldn't be following her. She couldn't risk a freezing charm, because she could wind up freezing herself, instead, which would be dumb and pointless. And she hoped to goodness Kitty wouldn't either; last thing she needed was a repeat of her leaving a motionless student unattended like she'd done with Derf.

Now that she had a pine bracelet carved with runes, Vivian slipped it back onto her wand hand. She had finished the first part of today's activity, which was a relief definitely because her lower limbs were starting to ache from all the movement and crouching... but that was mostly her fault because she had stayed in a stationary position for so long. She needed to stretch these legs first, yep.

Once almost everyone else had finished carving their bind rune, Vivian looked back at the Headmistress when she began instructing them on what to do. So now, they were to activate the runes with the galdr. Merlin, though... that was a mouthful. Vivian blinked and chewed on her lower lip, trying to absorb all those words.

Errr... still a lot. The Slytherin scratched her head a little sheepishly because, honestly, that words were just too much for her fourteen year old self to comprehend. But she had to try. That was the least she could do. It was a good thing she knew the first part of the chant. It was the easiest part, though, so it wasn't any different. "Berkano berkano berkano... Ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz.. Jera jera jera...." And after she had chanted that part, which is really the only thing she was positive she got right, her attention was caught by a running someone. Someone who knew all too well, and was making her way to the blonde's direction.

OHUMOKAY. Was that Skylar? Vivian was so confused at what was happening that all she did was stare. Simply stare at her dorm mate. "Sky? Uhm... what are you doing?" Then the fourth year took a better look at those things that were following her... flying with her, apparently. That was when Vivian froze in place with her eyes open wide.

It all happened too fast, and the little Slytherin screamed. Really, Sky, really?!

Really, Zoryn? Almost murdered? Regina just stood there with a raised brow, blinking as the girl told her unfortunate tale. Gryffindors could be so ... dramatic. "The tree wouldn't have swung at you unless it felt that you were too close, Miss Spinnet. The Willow is quite ... territorial. Very protective of its plot of land," she explained. "But you are okay, so there is nothing to worry about. Let's just avoid going that direction again, okay?"

And there would be no restraining orders for the Whomping Willow today. That's not how those worked. If you didn't want to make contact with its branches, you simple didn't go anywhere near it.

Her raised eyebrow returned to once again when the girl mentioned that she had lost her seed. It was then directed at the Hufflepuff when he said that he still had extra seeds. Hadn't she said to put the extras back? Alas, she was going to let it slide. Him having the seed Zoryn needed was saving her time in the grand scheme of things.

Though his seed was in the mud? Oh, Merlin.

As for how she could further assist them, she saw right past Derfael. She had been teaching long enough to know when students hadn't been listening to instructions. She wasn't born yesterday, you know. "The order would be Berkana, Inguz, and then Jera, Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne." She hoped he wouldn't need her to pronounce the incantation for him, considering they had been using it all term.

She then conjured a small piece of parchment and wrote something on it. Precious minutes had gone by and the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff needed to catch up with everyone else. "And this, you two, is the galdr you will need to chant to activate your bind rune once you have it carved. I'll say it again in just a moment, so pay attention," she said, handing it over to Zoryn simply because she wasn't the one covered in mud. Would they be able to handle the rest of the assignment on their own now?

Her wand then returned to her neck a few minutes later. It was time for a heads up on how much time they had left before the lesson had to come to a close. "As a gentle reminder, the galdr you're chanting today is berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a. Once the bind rune is glowing, cast the Herbivicus Charm. There are about fifteen minutes left to get your seeds planted and grown. Carry on."

OOC: There is still plenty of time to complete the main activity potion of this lesson. I will be wrapping things up tomorrow afternoon. ^__^

Eheheheheh! This was fun!

The voice of the Ravenclaw prefect did nothing to stop them from pulling at the Slytherin's hair. It only provoked them more. Little blue tongues stuck out at her, pixie spit leaving their mouths. They didn't take orders from stupid humans. And then that other girl was screaming now. One of the duo zoomed off toward her, circling around her and kicking at her head.

But the other pixie was still following after its target. You could run, but not forever. Your pesky pixie pal was there to stay. Hehehehe!

“Maybe it’s just cranky today,” she offered. ‘Cause Zoryn 506% believed that this was not her own fault. It was definitely the tree. Plus, she was trying to make it a friend. What wasn’t there to appreciate?!? “Okay,” she nodded despite her Professor’s disbelief. Geez. Hopefully Hawthorn would still put the restraining order through though, Zoryn was very serious about that.

Zoryn looked at Derf while he explained to Hawthorne his reason for running over. Her eyes were filled with nothing but honest endearment and appreciation. He was the BEST EVER. “I’m glad too,” she returned his hug VERY enthusiastically, squeezing maybe a little too hard in the process. She didn’t even care about the mud. Or uh, the water. Welp. She was now a sufficient mess. “You’re a hero,” Derf and Levi were BOTH her greatest heroes ever.

Speaking of heroes, Derf saved her once again with the extra seeds! “Thanks, Derf!!!” She owed him BIG time. Maybe she could catch him a funky insect creature or something. She was sure he’d appreciate that. Mhm. Or maybe she could find him a mermaid or something. That would be EVEN cooler.

The second year stayed quiet after hearing Derf’s question. Yes. Nodding. Lots of nodding. Zoryn needed the instructions again too. Runes was REALLY hard. There was a lot to memorize. It helped that they had it all written down now though. She took the parchment from her Headmistress (though, Zoryn was also plenty of muddy now thanks to that hug so the whole issue of getting it muddy would not be avoided). “Thanks Professor-Headmistress! Let’s go Derf!! I’m gonna plant my seed by yours. Our trees can be friends,” because the whomping willow lost his chance.

And with that she slipped her hand into his and tugged him forward towards the Creature Barn where his mud pile sat untouched.

Default headmistress
Gryffindor for life Notorious Niffler

Emmeline ran a hand through her hair in frustration; she couldn't remember that super long chant thingy at ALL. She had just decided to go find Stasya and ask her what it was -- she was sure that her best friend had written it down -- when help literally came from above. The headmistress was telling them all what the chant was! Yesss!

The first year scrunched up her nose and made a face 'cause that did seem like a reallllly long chant thing even for this class. Hopefully it would work.
Emmeline let out a long sigh and shot the creature barn another look of longing before replacing the rune bracelet on her wand hand and chanting:"berkano berkano berkano, ingwaz ingwaz ingwaz, jera jera jera, bub a bi be bo, ung ang ing eng ong, j j j e e e r r r a a a." Her bracelet looked exactly the same with no glow whatsoever. "This class is super hard, Luna," she informed the pygmy puff, who was currently peeking out of the Gryffindor's pocket and sniffing the air to see what was going on. "And we can't play until this dumb tree grows." Which was sad; playing with Luna would be sooo much more fun than chanting and runes and trees. Still, Emmeline heaved another wistful sigh and tried the chant again.

Nope, not glowing. Her headache seemed to be getting worse and worse too, and the first year rubbed her forehead absently. It was totally normal for her to get a headache in this class, and when she tried to learn other things that totally, completely confused her like maths had before Hogwarts. She kind of wanted to just tell the headmistress that she couldn't do it, but she also didn't want to be a quitter. So she gave the super long chant another two tries but still didn't get any glowing at all.

Emmeline took a few deep breaths, closed her eyes to block out distractions, and tried the chant again. She peeked her eyes open a little to check the bracelet, and the runes had a very faint brown-ish glow about them! That would just have to be good enough! Smiling slightly, Emmeline copied the wand movement the headmistress had shown them and cast "Herbivicus!" over her seed's spot. The runes kept up their brown glowing thing, and a little green sprout began shooting up out of the hole. The sprout stopped growing super fast though, and it was tiny and looked like a decent wind would totally sweep it away. Ugh, that was no good.

The first year glared at the little, tiny green plant that would supposedly become a tree and cast the Herbivicus charm again. Obviously it hadn't really worked the first time, and new spells never did so it was all good--

Except now the little sapling was getting bigger and bigger and bigger until it was growing at a crazy fast rate and didn't look like it was turning into a normal tree. Oops... The first year spun around and ran back up the path again, and raced towards the headmistress. "Umm, Professor Headmistress, I think I messed up my plant thing. It's going kinda crazy", she informed the headmistress and then bit her lip nervously. She wasn't sure HOW she'd messed it up, though. Every new spell had to be cast loads and loads of times to get it right, and that had only been the SECOND try!

With everything going on, especially going on so close to her, Stasya had started to worry that she’d forgotten what the next step in the activity was. Even as Skylar had ran off toward the Beetle and she’d heard Vivian scream, Stasya had just sat there staring at the spot where she’d buried her seed. As if she expected it to talk, to tell her what she was supposed to do. Or maybe it would tell her that everyone was going to be okay and that the pixies had left. The only thing that actually happened was that she’d glanced at her bracelet to see that it was still glowing. Even it was waiting, which was beginning to make her panic. She just didn’t know what she was supposed to do, and it wasn’t in her notes.

She had been about to give up and just starfish on the ground, hoping that everybody, pixies included, would just not notice her at all in her failure to remember the last part of the activity when she’d heard the headmistress speak again. Mostly just telling everyone the galdr again, which she didn’t need. She had her glowy bind rune, but it was the last part that had caught her attention. Herbivicus. She’d grinned a little and turned her attention back to the spot where her seed was buried, taking her wand out. Pointing it at the spot, she performed the spell, concentrating as best she could on what she wanted it to do. “Herbivicus!”

It wasn’t really fast, but a tiny little sapling had poked up out of the ground and started growing. As she had noticed movement out of the corner of her eye and seen Emmeline running toward the headmistress. Now what was going on?

It all happened too fast, and the little Slytherin screamed. Really, Sky, really?!

Runes and chanting galdrs were kind of like the furthest thing on Skylar's mind right now. She could barely hear the Headmistress' instructions over the sound of the buzzing around her head and maybe she'd been a tad harsh towards the Ravenclaw, but she was frustrated.

Especially when Vivian screamed. Oops? She hadn't meant for the pixies to attack her friend too, but she didn't know where to run to and running towards the beetle seemed a far enough option that the pixies might leave her alone instead following her. "No!" Skylar flailed her arms, shaking her head, to try and get the pixie away.

"They just came at me!" Sky yelled, feeling the need to be heard over the buzzing in her ears.

Clapping her hands together overhead, Sky tried as she may to capture the annoying thing. Uh, where was the headmistress in all this? Just watching? She'd have fired a spell, but her luck she'd end up hitting herself instead of the pest because she wasn't sure where exactly by her head it was located.

Ava had just finished with her tree planting and admired the result when the Headmistress announced they only have fifteen minutes left. Good! That means she had free time while waiting until the lesson over. Probably Hawthorne wouldn't mind if she's taking a nap for fifteen minutes or so. Except that there was a chaos happened not too far from her position and kind of attracted her eyes.

Oh, Merlin. Pixies versus two Slytherin girls.

And she did recognize those girls, so she decided to offer some help because... Why not? She had finished her work and defeating Cornish Pixies wouldn't be that difficult. All she needed to to was just shoot them with freezing charm but Ava needed to be careful or otherwise her spell would hit the girls. "Skylar, Vivi, duck!" The Gryffindor commanded as she aimed her wand at the pixies. "Immobulus persequoris!" She carefully sent the spell and hopefully the homing spell would help defeating the annoying creaturesm

Merlin's beard. This was NOT how Vivian expected her Ancient Runes class to become today.

Vivian screamed a little more when a pixie, that tiny pesky thing, came zooming over to her and she flailed her hands up, trying to swat it away from her. "Leave me ALONE!" The Slytherin said, a little bit annoyed at the pixie kicking at her. And she only had fifteen minutes left to do her plant thing? How was she supposed to do that with an annoying flying creature attacking her? "I need to finish up my plant. Get away!" The blonde sort of punched in the air, hoping it had hit the pixie, causing it to fly away. All she could do was hope.

Wait, duck? "Quack?!" Vivian's blue eyes looked at her side to see Ava rescuing them. Oh, she didn't actually mean an legit duck... but thank Merlin for Ava being their lifesaver! The Slytherin did as commanded and dropped to her knees, tugging on Sky's arm to duck with her as well and covering her entire head with both her arms as protection.

Move over, pixies!
