| | Office of Professor Rosalyn Newton
Banner made by MuggleDinosaur The first thing you notice upon walking inside Professor Newton's office is that the entire back wall is filled with bookcases. These books cover a wide range of topics from history to art and anything in between as she has many interests. Any student is welcome to read from them so long as they take proper care of them. There are also a few muggle paintings scattered around the room. A plate of cookies is always kept on her desk in case any of her visitors get hungry and there is a tea service as well. A couple comfy chairs are situated in front of the desk for students to sit on while they visit. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Amari Rey Fifth Year | Bashful Bowtruckle ♥ ♥ Lassie's Sweet Pea Oliver beamed at Professor Newton when she opened her door and he was happy to see there was no one else in the office before him. Perfect. "Good morning, Professor. I hope this isn't a bad time?" He stepped past her and into the office. He hadn't really thought through everything he wanted to say, he mostly wanted to say hi and thank you again, but he could've done that after their first class... Maybe this whole visit was a waste of her time?
Despite being comfortable around her, he took a big breath and pushed any dumb thoughts to the side. "I, uh, I'm not really here about anything school related...or History of Magic related." Because let's be honest, he was never very good at the subject.

Because let's be honest, he was never very good at the subject. Oliver was obviously in a good mood and that was very nice to see! It made Rosalyn happy to see her students happy. "It most definitely is not a bad time." No need for him to worry about interrupting something because it wasn't as if she couldn't find another time to get some reading in. Besides it was more important to interact with her students - they were the reason why she had gotten into this profession after all. "That is perfectly fine. We can talk about whatever you want to." Rosalyn was always up for conversation. |

Rosalyn was always up for conversation. Professor Newton was just so nice, and it always kind of surprised him. He knew she was nice, but when he experienced it in person, it made him that much more comfortable for him to be aroudn her. Ollie wasn't sure how many other professors would let him sit in their office to talk about.......what was it he wanted to talk about again?
......
......
Oliver's eyes went wide as he realized he'd forgotten what it was he wanted to talk about. He had had it and now it was gone! Blushing a little out of embarassment he cleared his throat and said, "Um..w-well...I, um...I forgot what it was, actually. Just now...the thought just...left."
This was frustrating. But Ollie didn't wanna just be sitting there awkwardly. He searched his brain for anything to talk about and all he could tihnk about was his next two meetings with professors. "Well...I'm, uh, I'm gonna go see Professor Marchand next." That was something to talk about, right?

There were a variety of foods to choose from, including a bowl of Chocolate Frogs on her desk. If Oliver didn't want tea or coffee there were muggle soft drinks in a mini fridge.
Obviously the boy was slightly embarrassed judging by his blush though really she didn't see any need for him to be. "It happens to us all. Maybe you will remember while we are talking." Rosalyn knew that happened sometimes and even if it didn't they could still discuss other things. "You are? That's great!" Gaston would definitely be able to help since he was an expert in the field Oliver was interested in. "Are you still considering teaching?"

Sighing, she grabbed the first assignment so that she could look it over. Before she got a proper chance to, there was a knock on the door. Looked like marking would have to wait. With a shrug she got up and headed to the door. "Hello, Mr Bronwyn," she said as soon as she saw who it was. "Would you like to come in?" Rosalyn's attention turned to the flowers. "Those are beautiful." Were they for her? OOC: You may post in her office now. "Wouldn't be here otherwise, Professor." It wasn't like he, Rooney Bronwyn of dramatown, just popped his head into offices to say hello. He always had a reason. And so yes, he wanted to come in. But the attention of the conversation had turned to the flower baskets he had in his hands. Swinging them up into view properly, he smiled. "Couldn't come and pester you without a gift, Professor Newton." Who was he? Blaise Bellaire? Takeru Asakura?
Offering them across the doorway to her, Rooney grinned. "They're for you."

"Um, just a water, please? Thank you."
She was right, it was totally possible that the thought he'd had would come back to him, but he felt like it wasn't likely...Why had the thought left his brain in the first place?? "Yeah, I guess so. Sorry." Now he was mostly apologizing for being embarrassed, which was probably a weird reason to apologize, but he couldn't help it. "I am still considering it, yeah. Unless Professor Marchand tells me about some other things I could do with Charms that interest me more, but teaching sounds like fun. Scary but fun." Scary bc molding the minds of the future, but fun because molding the minds of the future. "University prepares you well enough to be a teacher, right?"

Well, whatever the reason that he had come, she would gladly converse with him and offer advice if it was needed of her. Plus his gesture was very sweet and appreciated. "Thank you, Rooney. They are absolutely lovely." With a smile she took them and headed back inside the office knowing that he would follow after her. "What can I do for you today? Do you want a drink? Snack?" As she spoke, she placed her flower baskets on display. What wonderful additions to her office! Quote:

Scary bc molding the minds of the future, but fun because molding the minds of the future. "University prepares you well enough to be a teacher, right?" Water was certainly possible. With a nod, Rosalyn pulled a bottle out of the mini fridge she kept by her desk and handed it over to him. That was always kept well stocked both for herself and for students. Mainly the students because on the most part she was fine with living off of tea and coffee.
The apology was a little surprising and confused Rosalyn. It really was no matter to her. "No need to apologize. No harm even if it doesn't come to you." Surely it would eventually and he could talk to her about it at another time. At the moment she was more than happy talking about the issue at hand. "There are lots of things that you can do with charms and Professor Marchand is definitely an expert." She was tempted to go on about it, but gushing would make things obvious and that wasn't something she wanted to go into at the moment. Did students even know? "Teaching IS fun, and it's more than just a job... For me it is at least." Most if not all of the other professors at the school felt the same way. "It's amazing passing on knowledge to others and helping them grow. Students help teachers grow as well." It was a two way street.
As far as university was concerned... "If you study Advanced Charms there, it will prepare you for teaching as well as any other career you decide on in that field." Such as charms development. That was an area that she had no expertise in but Gaston was experienced with, so he could definitely help if Oliver was interested in that as well. |

But only if the offerings were wonderful or if he was particularly hungry. Which. secretly, he was.
Wiping his sweaty hands onto his trousers, Rooney settled into the chair to get comfortable, his focus on the flowers that were now in the room. "I've been thinking about my future, Professor, and what I want to do. But I don't know.."

"I've been thinking about my future, Professor, and what I want to do. But I don't know.." Oh good. Rosalyn liked sharing with her students, so she was happy that Rooney was up for it. "There are Chocolate Frogs, cookies, and brownies." What could she say? She liked going to the kitchen and either baking or asking the sweet house elves to share with her. "I also have tea, coffee, water, soft drinks." In case he was feeling thirsty.
The conversation turned to the future, and Rosalyn wasn't surprised about that seeing that he boy was currently in his Sixth Year; this was the time when many students tried working out what they wanted to do with their lives. Unless, of course, they were lucky enough to know what they wanted to get into from a young age. "Are you considering something in the field of history? Or maybe a teaching job?" Even if he wasn't sure, Roony might have some idea in his head as far as what he wanted to do. And he HAD done exceptionally well on his History of Magic OWL. |

Professor Newton was telling him there was no harm done, but what if whatever he needed to say was super important! WHAT IF. Now he was never going to know. His memory was pretty good most times but once something was forgotten, it was unlikely it would ever come back to him, sadly. He just nodded in response to her though, no need to let her know he had no faith in his brain.
Aside from that, he loved hearing about how much people loved their jobs, especially when it was teachers who loved teaching. When Ollie imagined himself as a professor, it made him happy. Meeting his first group of students and seeing them grow within their years at school. The whole sounded pretty great, honestly. And if he liked it enough, he could do it till he was old and gray! "Can I ask, how long have you been teaching?" It was possible she had told the class this...but Oliver wasn't exactly good at paying attention all the time... Sorry, professor. "But you have to take other classes right? You didn't just take History of Magic classes?" Surely there was class all uni students had to take, no matter what they were studying.

I was thinking of applying to WADA..but I should be waiting for Olivia. And now she thinks that she wants to travel, and I'm mighty confused about what to do." Because Liv was younger than him and so he would have to find something to do whilst he waited for her to graduate and do the things they wanted to do. "So... I was thinking about going to uni while I wait for her." Maybe. Probably.
Who knew.

"You are very welcome," Rosalyn said with a smile. It was wrong to play favourites and she tried not to, but she was really fond of Oliver. He was a very sweet boy and did put effort in even though she could tell that he wasn't a huge fan of History of Magic. That was okay though; a lot of people weren't interested in learning about history. Charms and Defence Against the Dark Arts were a lot more exciting.
Oliver's next question was a little surprising, though not overly since she knew that he had an interest in teaching. It was always a good idea to ask a lot of questions when it came to things like career options, and Rosalyn was VERY pleased that he was doing so. "Well, this is only my second term as a proper teacher, but I spent three years as a teaching assistant at Durmstrang before coming here." While she had less experience than some of her colleagues, she liked to think that she was doing a good job; she was also constantly learning as she went! "Being a teaching assistant is a good way to ease into things, because you get more comfortable with students and can watch the way that teachers do things and get tips from them." Just pointing that out to him. Quote:

Who knew. Brownies and water it is!
With a smile, she handed both over to him. "Here you go." Now he could enjoy his snack while they discussed things.
Nodding, Rosalyn listened to him. It was no surprise that Rooney was considering WADA, as she knew the boy had interest in the dramatic arts. She also knew that he enjoyed History of Magic. Those were two routes that he could go down, but she did understand wanting to wait for his girlfriend. Young love was something that she knew well. "It's never a bad idea to have something in reserve as far as career options, and at the very least you can improve your skills." Basically she was saying that she was in agreement with his thought process. Going to university was never a bad idea. "Have you looked up any of the courses available at university yet? Have you considered studying history?" He was one of the best students in the class though of course he could have other interests as far as Wizarding university was concerned. History was her main focus, however. |

She knew what she was talking about and so he nodded every so often before taking the vocal floor himself. "I wouldn't know where to start, Professor. Do you know how many campuses there are to study History of Magic at? I'm thinking about taking Herbology or Charms or something. I like a lot..." It was just that he wasn't as good at some things as he was others. "I don't think I want to take two subjects, though. I want to choose one and focus on it." Then in time he would go back to university and study another. One of Rooney's goals in his entire life was to achieve five whole basic degrees. And two masters. Plus an education of theatre.
Maybe he was trying to overachieve. But he really did have a lifetime ahead of him... "I just want to know if you think I would be good enough. And what could I do afterwards?"

Then in time he would go back to university and study another. One of Rooney's goals in his entire life was to achieve five whole basic degrees. And two masters. Plus an education of theatre.
Maybe he was trying to overachieve. But he really did have a lifetime ahead of him... "I just want to know if you think I would be good enough. And what could I do afterwards?" Thinking about the subject that Rosalyn taught, it made her sad to think that it really wasn't as common as some of the others though she could understand why; history just wasn't as applicable as a lot of the others was, no matter how important she found it to be. "Yes, it really isn't as practiced as Charms or Herbology. I can't say I know about all the universities, mostly just the London campus." Just being honest. "Speaking for myself... Between the two options, I'd choose Charms because even if you end up attending WADA a lot of good will come out of it. Since charms are so very useful and it never hurts anyone to continue study with them." Now she hadn't been able to see how capable Rooney was with spell work as her class wasn't hands on on the most part, but she bet that he was good with it and could only get better. This was just what she would do in his place though. "I think you are very capable, Rooney. You are smart and hard working." Yes, she had no doubt about his abilities. "If it was me, I'd put my time in at University and then attend WADA. If the dramatic arts thing doesn't work out there would always be another option." Going off of whether he chose Charms or Herbology he definitely shouldn't have problems finding a career. Really though, she hoped that he succeeded in the dramatic arts. |

Rooney found himself sighing and indulging in another few gulps of water. "I'd love to study History of Magic, Professor. I just..don't think I should do it straight after I finish Hogwarts. I reckon that I would appreciate the subject more after having my own worldly experience to apply to my thoughts." Or maybe he was just putting it off because he had looked at Aunt Elodie's university textbooks and had didn't think he was ready for just studying the past on it's own. Charms and Herbology had fun in learning them and he doubted that a university History education would have that essence of fun in classes and research. "So you think I should wait to study at WADA?"

Nod. Rosalyn could definitely understand Rooney's logic because really experience made history come to life more than studying in school. Even though she had learned a lot at Wizarding University, seeing historical sites in person made everything more REAL. It wasn't just history either; the same could be applied to pretty much all of the subjects taught at school. "Yes, there is nothing like seeing the world and applying it to life's experiences. Even Hogwarts is like that; you get a better sense of its history by being here and experiencing it." Life was amazing like that.
As for his next question... "I think it would be a good idea, but if you decide not to wait I think you will still excel." Just letting him know she had total faith in his abilities. |

I don't have a lot of people I can talk about things to." Things were difficult in all sorts of things for him, and so he felt glad that he had a flurry of nice Professors that he could discuss his options with. He just needed to go see Professor Myers soon, too. "And thanks for feeding me, too." Food was important.

Starting fights, screaming, and storming out of class was not the way to do that.
A small smile was given in response to the apology. "I know." She was a good kid. Despite that, there were going to be repercussions. "We can talk in my office." Best to do this in private. The removal of her badge made Rosalyn's eyes widen. "You aren't losing your badge, Miss Valentine." Not only was that an extreme punishment, but it wasn't HER decision to make. The journey to the office was a blur to Kitty. She walked with Rosalyn to her office, faces of people they passed blank and landmarks unrecognizable. A lot of this was due to the fact that she cried half the way there, though silently so Rosalyn wouldn't notice so much.
Her mind was as blurry as her eyes. Deep down she was relieved she would get to keep her badge. She didn't know how she'd be able to show her face at school if everyone knew her badge was ripped from her. Not to mention the disappointment of her mom, who probably would be a little annoyed that the reason for it was that her daughter had decided to diss her childhood house. Ofcourse, Emily would understand that she hadn't been criticizing SlytherinS, but she'd still probably be a little annoyed.
Yet keeping her badge meant she'd have to continue spending time with Natalia, who probably hated her as much as Katy did. And then there was the matter of what kind of punishment she was about to receive from Professor Rosalyn. Kitty played over some of the possible punishments in her mind. If being demoted as prefect was off the table, then thankfully being expelled was also off. That left points taken away or/and detention. Maybe she'd make her apologize to Katy.
By the time they arrived at the office, Kitty had cried all the silent tears she currently had, an was now feeling dull. The books in the office might have fascinated her another time, but now they only served as the background, the final stop of this nightmare. She knew this wasn't a dream, but wished it was. If she had a time turner, she would rewind time and phrase her answer in class differently.
Dully, she sat down and began trying to offer an explanation. "I was only trying to answer your question," she began. "You asked about the founders, so I stated a fact. It's true that Slytherin house no longer believes what Salathar believed, and it's true that what he did was evil. He made a basilisk!" Some of her original passion returned as she said this. Honestly, how did people not get it? "And I started out by telling Natalia and the others that I loved them and that I knew they were good. But it was like if they only heard the part about Salathar and not that. So I exploded. I'm really sorry for yelling at Katy, but she said that she despised ME first. I'm sorry Professor, I really am. If I could turn back time I'd just give you a different answer. I'd have said that Rowena Ravenclaw died of a broken heart, and I would have been very poetic. Then no one would have gotten mad." |

Then no one would have gotten mad." Silently Rose headed back to her office with Kitty. It made her sad to think that such a sweet girl could have done this, but everyone could have an outburst when passionate enough about something. If she had known her lesson would prove to be a hot button, she would have chosen something else. Hindsight 20/20 and all they could do now was address the issue.
Patiently she listened as the girl talked, waiting until she was finished to say her piece. "I want to start off by saying that I always encourage people to speak their minds in class. I don't want you to feel that you can't share your opinion." There was a short pause before continuing. "That said, it's important to keep in mind the WAY things are said. I understand that you didn't mean to offend Slytherins or call them evil, but people feel a lot of pride for where they are sorted and saying something like that about their founder WILL make them angry even if you don't intend to." Rosalyn hoped that she was getting the point across well here. "On top of that you are a prefect, a student leader. You are an example for students to follow - especially the younger ones who are not as familiar with the Wizarding world and Hogwarts. Screaming and storming out of class are not things that prefects should be doing. In fact it's the exact opposite." Children were impressionable. Look at poor Carlton who thought he was evil. "I understand that you don't like Salazar Slytherin. You definitely don't have to like him. He wasn't a saint by any means, but he also wasn't a murderer." An allegation that would not sit well with Slytherins, and understandably so! "I don't like that he was prejudiced against muggleborns either, nor do I like that he built the Chamber of Secrets and placed a Basilisk. However, he did NOT set the creature loose in the castle. There weren't any deaths before he left. No one was killed by the creature until Tom Riddle attended Hogwarts. He was the murderer." Rosalyn just wanted Kitty to understand that.
Having addressed that issue, it was time to get to punishment. "You will need to do detention for this." Something that she was sure the girl expected. |

No doubt towards the end of the school year, as he would spend the rest of his time trying to write up lists of pros and cons for each course and location. That was the way that he did things. "Thanks again, Professor Newton. I'll let you get back to what you were doing." Plus he had homework to finish off and hand in.

Having addressed that issue, it was time to get to punishment. "You will need to do detention for this." Something that she was sure the girl expected. Throughout most of Professor Newton's speech, Kitty merely listened, occasionally muttering "I understand." Really though, she couldn't understand how so many people could be loyal to someone they'd never even met who lived so long ago, not when that someone had the reputation of Salathar. If Rowena Ravenclaw had attempted to kill an innocent person, (for example), she didn't think she'd be that offended if someone pointed it out. While true that Salathar never killed anyone, she was pretty certain he would have if he had had his way. "But professor, if Salathar didn't want to kill anyone, then why did he seal the basilisk up for his heir to discover? I'm not trying to argue, but wasn't the whole point of sealing the chamber up so that another person could murder instead of him? I'm not trying to argue," she repeated hastily.
The mention of detention didn't surprise her one bit. She supposed this was going to be her punishment all along. At least she didn't lose nay points. Yet. 'I understand," she repeated sadly. "Also...if you could tell me what activity I missed out on, I could work on it in my free time."
She waited tensely to hear what her detention would be. |

Rosalyn nodded, pleased that Rooney now had a better understanding of what he wanted to do after graduation. "Sounds like a plan! Definitely do that whenever you are ready." As in when things were even clearer for her. "No problem at all! Have a good day." She herald had some marking to do which wasn't exactly fun, but it could be worse. Maybe she would take it to the staff room for a change of scene and chat with any colleagues that happened to be there. Quote:

She waited tensely to hear what her detention would be. It was good that Kitty understood why she was here, but then Rosalyn knew that the Prefect regretted her actions by the way she wished she had answered differently. Unfortunately there wasn't a way to change the past; moments like this time turners would be really useful.
The question actually made Rosalyn smile, not because this was a happy moment, but because questions were GOOD things. I'm Kitty's shoes, she would have done the same thing. "Intent to harm was definitely there, but that still doesn't equal murder." Just VERY questionable behaviour. "Parseltongue is a VERY rare ability and with a couple rare exceptions, it's only passed down through his descendants. If one of those descendants hadn't of been a murderous psychopath, no one would have died." As in to say that the Chamber wouldn't have been opened. It probably would have remained a myth in the eyes of the Wizarding community to this very day.
Seeing students sad made Rosalyn sad, but she was not going to let it get to her! "I will be contacting you about your detention soon." There were just some things that she needed to do first. "As to the activity, it's to come up with a fifth Hogwarts House - pretending that you are a fifth founder. The House needs a name, an animal, colours, and characteristics for its members that don't HAVE to be personality based. After that, you are to draw a House crest." Not too hard in her opinion. |

He assured that he hadn't left anything behind, also checked that Professor Newton hadn't tossed the flowers he got for her away...he had been awfully distracted and stressed before he came in here. When all that was good, he moved for the door and left the office, feeling a lot better about the choices he had to make and that he could make them for himself.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Bramble "Bram" Wyatt Lennox Graduated | ThunderPUFF | Whoodley | MRD&LKD | Graphics Queen | Tristalen | Mrs. A | Hunny Bun Juno entered Professor Newton's office. The professor told her to go straight in and she would follow shortly after. It was always interesting to see the inside of a professors office. It was like getting a glimpse of who they really were outside of their jobs.
Juno's eye automatically went to the bookcases behind the professor's desk. They covered the entire wall. "Whoa." How had she not noticed that when she visited the professor before? Juno snuck back there, moving the desk chair out of her way. She loved to read, but she was sure most of the professor's books where about history. Not her best subject but Professor Newton made it really fun!
Juno gently ran her hands over the brittle spines, wondering what secrets they held.
