Office of Professor Newton

Of course that wasn't exactly why she was here, but then they both knew that already, probably. "I was hoping we could continue our tutoring sessions this year. They've really been helping." As he was probably well aware. |

"Oh it was my pleasure. Very entertaining. We all loved your portrayal of the Mad Hatter," he said with a smile. His children had loved the Disney films growing up, and Alice in Wonderland was one of their favourites. "Ohh er.. th-they're great. I'll see them every second weekend, we decided. Little Liesel started walking last week too!" He had been one very proud Papa. "And how are your family?" Art nodded, as if he was expecting this question. Well, he was hoping she'd want to continue, as well. "Of course, absolutely!" He went to his filing cabinet to pull out the folder marked Miss Denaker. Inside it were loose parchments detailing what they had been working on, the recipes, the notes, questions etc. "Did you have anything in mind to start with?" he asked. He didn't want to set a schedule with the potions that she wasn't interested in. There would be no point in that. He smiled and was very glad to hear her say they had helped her. He nodded "You've been showing steady improvements, you're a smart young lady, Miss Denaker." And her desire to do more Potions helped immensely. |

"Hot chocolate might be nice, thank you." Remembering his manners would no doubt help this conversation run more smoothly. Without really being invited to, Blaise took a seat and gave his Head of House his most serious look. How else would he be taking seriously? "I was actually hoping to discuss the issue in our dorm Professor." The Fifth Year leaned forward, clasping his hands on the side of the Professor's desk he was sitting at. "The boys and I like it and all--it's great, elves keep it clean, nothing goes missing. There's just...well--you gotta get rid of that charm you put on it." Seriously mate, Sir, seriously. |
Quote:
He took a sip of his tea before things commenced. "Er... i-issue?" he asked. He wasn't... aware of any issues. He frowned slightly as the young lion continued. He nodded, thankful that at least something was appreciated. "What charm?" He tried to think back but... well, he couldn't. Unless of course the young MAN was speaking about the charm designed to keep LADIES out? |

The boy lowered his cup, trying to get on some common ground with the man who surely must have been young once. Young and superficial. "Have you ever seen your girlfriend with a beard, Professor?" His tone was calm, a deception given how utterly freaked out the whole thing made him. "Did you think she was pretty after that? Did you still want to grab her and snog and tell her the other girls have nothing on her?" Because if he did, he was lying or far stranger than Blaise had first anticipated. Don't get him wrong, a beard didn't suddenly make Clara hideous but that beard though. "I just think...you know...if girls were meant to have facial hair, they'd grow them naturally--y'know?????" |
Quote:
"Yes I believe they would have grown it all naturally if they were meant to have facial hair," he agreed. "But Mr Bellaire... the dormitories are for sleeping, not... not... mixing with other genders. The common room and other areas of the school are there for that. Not the common rooms." Art took a little breather, trying NOT to think of why Mr Bellaire was trying to get him to lower the charm. "I'm sorry to disappoint you Mr Bellaire, but I will not be getting rid of this charm. Unless I put up a new charm. An invisible barrier against females, perhaps?" There were options, but they would all be there to stop females from entering make dormitories, and males from entering the female ones. No, the old man might have thought he was open minded but he would remain obdurate in his decision. |

Hadley's eyes lit up as Newton proudly told her about his granddaughter walking. "She did? That's great!" She took another sip of her hot chocolate, and this time wiped away the mustache. "Oh they're great. Both my parents have started dating again, so it looks like they've moving on from the divorce well enough. I just got back home from visiting my Dad in California with Natalie and a couple of our friends. Mark, my older brother," had she told him about Mark? She knew she'd told him about her twin sister Natalie. He'd even met her after the play, but she wasn't sure if she mentioned her older brother before. "He spent the summer backpacking across Europe before university started." Hadley watched as Professor Newton retrieved her file, sipping the hot chocolate as she did. "Honestly, I hadn't given it much thought yet." She fell quiet, thinking it over. "I think I'd like to try harder potions, ones that really challenge me?" Well, technically intermediate potions still challenged her, but still. "I know it might be a bit too advanced too soon, but it might be good to have try and problem solve some potions outside my current comfort zone. If you think that's a good idea I mean." Hads smiled quietly when Professor Newton said she was smart, and sipped her hot chocolate. |

"It is, just wonderful. My son got lots of photos of the moment too, actually." He went to his wall and picked a photo down, which was framed. It had been developed with the photo potion, so it was animated. It showed the little love pulling herself up and walking towards April, who was kneeling with her arms stretched out. He showed it to Miss Denaker. "Oh... w-well I hope you're... doing okay with all of that." He didn't want to stick his nose in to her family life. But of course he was there to talk about it if she wished. "Oh Great Scott, that sounds wonderful. A summer in California, and... your brother backpacking. What's he studying?" Art asked, taking some more of his tea. Art thought for a moment. He was not entirely sure about which direction to go in. "I could perhaps... make a salvageable potion, one which isn't quite right, and you can go through the steps and ingredients and try to work out what happened, and how to fix it." |

He sipped his hot chocolate, feeling like he'd done a good job of clearing Clara's name. In the grander scheme, it didn't matter, given he wasn't sure Professor Newton even bothered to know who his girlfriend was but just covering all bases. In general the Gryffindor found Professors preferring NOT to know whether for their own sanity or some point of another. Myers....Myers might have been the exception for this. The man seemed to have a penchant for drama and gossip as proven during that meeting with him and Rooney over a year ago. "Thing is, I know it's meant for sleeping and that the Common Room is for mingling but have you been to the Common Room lately? Very loud and depending on the time of the day, also crowded. We're a group of rough housers, Professor. It can get pretty rowdy in there--and before you suggest the library, it's filled with Ravenclaws." Do with that what you will. Chloe Newman was all the reason for Blaise disliking the lot. "I'm not saying you gotta go putting up blocking wards, I'm just saying maybe we could compromise? Like...instead of a beard...I dunno....something that won't leave me staring for all the wrong reasons." Seemed fair, didn't it? |

She accepted the photo and watched the scene play out. "Aww!" She felt herself melt watching it. She was almost too cute. "She's so precious," Hads said, handing the photo back. "I want kids some day." In the future, of course. After she was done with school. At the question of how she was handling her family situation, Hads gave Professor Newton a half-hearted, lopsided smile and shrugged. "Well enough, I guess. It's a bit weird." Her face lit up again as the topic returned to California. Hadley let out a content little, Uh. "It was wonderful. Felt so good to be back on a board, and surfing. You have no idea. I missed it so much." Hadley had to pause and actually think about it. "I have no clue what he's studying, honestly. I don't think he knows yet." Hadley's face lit up yet again as Newton shared his idea. "Oh, yes. YES! That sounds like a fantastic idea." It was simultaneously going to be challenging and would undoubtably teach her so much. Plus, it was a puzzle. Her Ravenclaw mind always seemed to crave puzzles. She even asked the Ravenclaw knocker to give her harder riddles. Which... "It's like a riddle, only in potion form." |
Quote:
He had been into the common room of course. "The study area is charmed with a silence charm to block the noise from the other areas. You can have some quiet socialising there. Or... the spare office on the sixth floor, or... the room of requirement. There are plenty of quiet areas around Hogwarts, Mr Bellaire." Art was not even going to mention Mr Bellaire's concerns for the beard of his girlfriend. No, that was something he didn't feel comfortable touching on. Quote:
He put the photo back where it was, and felt himself simultaneously beam at the little girl with a proud Papa smile, and miss her so terribly. "She really is," he said, completely biased. Well Great Scott, this was going in a direction he didn't fancy discussing. "Er... well yes children are the... the... the... most precious gift." And he had been blessed with three at once. As busy as that was, he wouldn't have changed it for all the Potion equipment in the world. Art nodded, and although he couldn't completely understand what she was going through, he had had previous times of pain and difficulty with his family. They were a precious thing, and when things went wrong it was very awful. Miss Denaker seemed more interested in speaking of California, and Art joined in. "Ahh you surf? No, I don't have any idea," he said with a chuckle. "I've never tried surfing." He didn't have the best balance, but it looked fun. Art grinned at her enthusiasm for the idea. He would have to think of something not TOO difficult, but something that would still challenge her. "I'll have a think about it and brew it. What days are your best time for some lessons?" he asked. He chuckled and said "It is! Well this will be good fun then." Though perhaps fun wasn't the right word... |
Quote:
"Good day to you, Professor! I had some questions for you and I was hoping you'd be willing to chat. I could get us tea? I think chatting over tea is best because then you can be leisurely." |
Quote:
Again, the boy leaned forward with his hands clasped on the table. "Let's have a discussion, man to man." Being 15, he was practically a man. Didn't matter that the hair follicles on his face hadn't realized and done something about it yet. "Have you ever liked someone before?" Surely with all his years of doing that whole...being alive thing, surely he must have found one of two that he particularly liked. The whole argument was dependent on this. |

It appeared that was not the end, though. "Oh.. o-okay then," Art said, as he pushed his glasses a little further up his nose. Art didn't want to crack a smile, because it appeared Mr Bellaire was very serious about this conversation. So, he kept a very serious look on his face. "Well I have, actually. I've been married twice." He had loved those women with all of his heart. |
Quote:
She seated herself before offering sugar and cream. "Thank you, sir. I appreciate it. I have a big dilemma, and I am just sure you know the answer. I'm working on a standard Pepper Up for my brother, who is vegan. I have to find a suitable substitute for every ingredient that comes from a creature, and I'm having trouble with the bicorn horn. Do you have any suggestions?" |
Quote:
He took a sip and savoured the perfect brew before putting the cup back down to give his student her whole attention. "Hmm," he said, interested. He'd done quite a bit of study regarding substitutions for potions, and he'd done plenty of his own experiments of course. "I do, yes." He got off his chair and headed over to the cupboard where he had columes and volumes of handwritten notes, some 47 years old. He pulled a few out, flipped through them, and put them back. He had to come up with a better way of organising the notes. "Ahh here we go," he said, taking the book back to the desk. "Yes... bicorn horn... here we go..." he wrote down a copy of the notes he had written and handed them over to her. Quote:
