Default Muggle Studies Lesson 2: Board Games

The time was approaching for yet another lesson and Kaysha was quite ready. It was a brilliant morning, the sunshine was streaming through windows and she was in an even better mood than usual. She already had her classroom squeakily cleaned and today, she opted to give a hint of what her lesson would be. Wasn’t that strange as this was something she usually didn’t do? Anyway, Kay was at the doorway of the classroom ready to greet you! She does so and when you enter to take a seat, you’ll see a short list on her white board:

Juno had a lot of games that she loved playing but one that her family really enjoyed playing together wasn't one that was really that well known. At least she thought it wasn't.

Juno raised her hand, and when called on replied. "My family and I really enjoy playing Settlers of Catan. In the game each person is considered a land settlers were you are trying to build and develop your land while gaining resources to build and get more land. You get points for growing your settlement and the first person to reach a certain amount of points wins. It's really fun and takes time and a lot of strategic moves." Juno and her dad happened to be the best at this game. Sometimes River would win too.

Just thinking about it, she kinda wanted to play...

Natalia had been sitting quiet. She wasn't much in the mood for class today, but she was here. She had heard the professor say she was there for her, but she wasn't really wanting to talk about things.

They were talking about board games and Nat wasn't all that familiar with them. honestly she couldn't even say she was familiar with wizard kid games either. She didn't get to be much of a kid with her mother. So she missed the most of learning how to play or getting interesting in any type of games.

When they started talking about other games they wanted to play she thought about things she saw at the muggle shops she walked past as a child. Her hand slowly raised, "Professor I don't think this is a board game, but maybe it is? It was called...." What was it called again. She tried to think about it, "Pie in the face I think."

Sooooo now they were adding to Professors Stewart's list of board games. Yes....... The Hufflepuff listened to all of the other answers, she did not want to repeat one that had already been added to the main list of the professors. She was way to much of a board game fanatic to let two be repeated by her.

"Candyland has always been my favorite. It's a candy themed game. The goal and the way to win is to get all the way through Candyland first. On the board are places you can visit in Candyland, like peppermint forest, or ice cream sea. The game pieces are candy themed characters as well Mr. Mint and Princess Lolly are a few of them." She played it whenever she got a chance. She had even taught Cornelius how to play a few summers ago. Also Kat always used the chance to play candyland as a chance to get to eat candy all afternoon while playing. Some of the kids that she babysitted last summer really enjoyed that idea of eating candy while playing the candy themed game too.

"I like Battleship." Noelle said, holding her hand up. She wasn't a 100% if that was actually a board game or not but close enough right? "Theres two players. Each player has their own board. And you have your ships and then your darts. The boards are lined up with numbers. So the opponent will say a combination of letters and numbers, like c3 to try and sink your ships. Whoevers ships are sunk first wins."

Noelle had always gotten so competitive during that game. She swore her dad moved pieces.

“Indeed, Ms Summers. Battleship can be classified in what we call a ‘Guessing’ game since we mainly try to guess where our opponent’s ships are. The game was mainly played on paper before eventually moving to a plastic board in 1967. Entirely, it dates back to the first World War.’’

SPOILER!!: Monopoly!

But Monopoly specifically, his father wanted him to be a great business man, just like himself. What Tenacius couldnt say was that the very nature of Monopoly was something he wasnt very comfortable with. Its a game that encourages greed. And he couldnt say that to his dad because he knew it was basically accusing his hero of being greedy.

But right an overview of Monopoly. Up goes the hand "Monopoly is basically a real estate game, the goal being that players buy properties listed on the game board and they can collect rent money when other players land on it. The more properties they own the more money they can collect. The more developed those properties are, like if there are houses and hotels on it, the more they can charge players when they land there. And theres a bonus if a player owns all the properties listed on a specific color group-- hence MONOPOLY. Eventually the game becomes too expensive for other players and they lose money until they go bankrupt. Last man standing wins."

Which is basically how real life works. Whoopeedoo.

Kay nodded approvingly at the Gryffindor’s explanation. “Very right! To add to that, Monopoly debuted and originated in the United States of America in the year 1903. It was geared towards educating the persons about the benefits of an economy that creates wealth.’’

SPOILER!!: Life!

But thinking about that made him think about other things he didn't want to think about. He focused on Colin and all the times he had played that game with his brother. Finally he raised his hand to give an explanation.

"At home my siblings and I like to play Life. It's a game where you spin a wheel and move your car piece around to different spaces that signify life events like getting married, buying a house, adopting a child. Bad things can happen to you too like a tree falling on your house or something. Whoever has the most money at the end wins."

Ah, the Game of Life. This happened to be Kay’s favourite too! “It’s almost exactly as going through real life,’’ Kay said with an enthusiastic nod. “You also get to go through college or go right onto a career without forwarding your education. It was created in in 1860 by Bradley Milton and was called the Checkered Game of Life.’’

SPOILER!!: Chess!

Chess is a two-player game, each player has sixteen pieces and each of those pieces have different moves. The goal is to 'checkmate' that is.. to make sure one of the pieces, the 'King' can't escape. The most powerful piece is the queen, though. She can move in pretty much every direction." She smiled before her attention turned towards the parchment in front of her. Adding additional notes, she looked up and waited for the class to move on.

“Very good! Chess can be categorised as a ‘Strategy’ board game. The board used is a checkered one with sixty four squares. It is said that chess is originated in India and was derived from Chaturanga, which is, of course, an Indian game.”

SPOILER!!: Dungeons and Dragons! <3

Heavy breathing.

This little cutie. He couldn’t get anymore adorable than that Kay decided. Kay grinned at the bouncy Slytherin. “Not a problem, Mr Lewis. Dungeons and Dragons is what we call a ‘tabletop role playing game.’ It was designed by designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson and first debuted in 1974. It is one of the most popular games to date.”

SPOILER!!: Sorry!

When Professor Stewart asked about their favorite games, Janelle raised her hand immediately. She had lots of games that she liked, but only one favorite. "I like Sorry.". In fact, Janelle was the queen of Sorry in her house. The object is to get all of your tokens around the board first. You draw cards that tell you how many spaces you can move. If you pick a card that says "Sorry", you get to send one of your opponent's pieces back to their beginning position. I love that part." When she was on the receiving end, it wasn't so much fun though.

Kay had honestly forgotten about Sorry! She had played it before but it had been since years ago. “Quite right, Ms Guidry! This game is based off of Pachisi, a cross and circle game. Each player has to get their coloured pieces around the board and to the ‘home’ spot’ to be the winner.’’

SPOILER!!: Scrabble!

"My family and I always like to play Scrabble, there is a board and dozens of lettered tiles, and the object of the game is to make words out of the tiles that you draw and the ones that are on the board.. " He smiled a bit.. "It's pretty fun trying to see what words you can make and how many points you can get.. each letter has a certain amount of points it's worth.. " Z and J being the most.. at least as far as he could remember.

“Excellently explained, Mr Kennedy! The tiles form words from left to right in rows or downwards in columns across the board. There are many scrabble clubs globally and the game is sold in about twenty nine languages.”

SPOILER!!: The Labyrinth!

Sighing she listened to the answers of the others and well… Because she had stayed silent during the last question she decided that she needed t show some effort this time, if she liked it or not! So slowly she raised her hand and spoke. “I don’t like it to play board games, to be honest.” She said slowly, “but if I need to name one I played while I was younger then it would be a Muggle game named The labyrinth” she continued. And why I liked it was because I always won with that game and I like it to win.” And after that she fell silent again because, what more was there to say about a game she hadn’t played since… 3 or 4 years? Maybe longer…

Oh dear. Leesha didn’t like board games? That was a little bit sad but perhaps she would change her mind after this lesson. However, the Professor was glad that a game had been given. “Labyrinth is a game that can accommodate two to four players at once. The players’ goal is to collect treasures in the labyrinth, which is a maze built of fixed and moving pieces, and then return to their starting position.''

SPOILER!!: Clue/ Cluedo!

Yep, all fit into what Cassie knew from her own times playing them. A family activity for sure, as well as with friends. It had gotten a little harder when Grayson had been old enough to join in on the game playing, her little brother could be a sore loser at times, but it was still enjoyable for the most part. Especially on rainy days as someone said. As for the discussion happening as they moved on, the Ravenclaw had to think for a bit on one that she might deem her fav as she copied notes from the board onto her parchment.

Oooo she had one. One of her favorites hadn’t been mentioned or listed on the board.

“I like a game called Clue. By making guesses and getting near other players on the board, you get clues to try and figure out who committed a crime.” Granted more for the older crowd, but still a competitor. She liked mysteries and puzzles.

But what was her favorite board game? She'd played many games before, but probably one stuck out more than the rest. "One game I've played a lot is Cluedo," she said, her hand flying into the air. "In America it's just called Clue, but everywhere else it's Cluedo. It's for two to six players, and in it you try to discover who murdered Mr. Boddy." It was only after several years of playing that she realized Mr. Boddy clearly referred to the character's dead body. "There are six character figures: Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, Mrs. Peacock, Reverand Mr. Green, Colonel Mustard, and Mrs. White. Who the killer is determined by who has which cards, or rather, which cards no one has. At the beginning of the game there are three cards put into an envelope that no one sees: one suspect, one room, and one weapon. The winner of the game is the person who determines which card everyone of these three is."

"I like this game because of the memories I have playing it, and also because I like how you solve the mystery, and how there's not really a loser."

The mystery game! Kay found anything to do with mysteries rather interesting. “You both woud be right, Ms McNally and Ms Valentine. The game was created by Anthony Pratt of Birmingham, England and was first manufactured in the UK in 1949.’’

SPOILER!!: Settlers of Catan!

This was yet another game that Kay hadn’t thought of in a very long time. “Correct, and to add to that, it was created by Klaus Teuber and first published in 1995 in Germany. It was originally called Die Siedler von Catan.’’

Kay was very concerned for Nat, having just remembered a sad but significant even that had occurred. She was awfully quiet and she had already made up her mind to speak to the Head Girl after class. Pie in the Face? Kay blinked for a moment. “I think you’re referring to Pie Face,’’ she finally deduced. “But this is a game where players load something called the ‘arm’ with whipped cream. They then take turns sliding their heads through the mask and spinning the spinner. Players turn the handle the number of times indicated on the spinner and the tension on the arm builds. Eventually someone gets splatted with the whipped cream.’’ Which was worth it in the long run...

SPOILER!!: Candyland!

And with that part of the class coming to an end, Kay headed behind her desk. She had something stashed away under it. Quickly she lifted a medium sized cardboard box. Blue eyes shining with the excitement of conducting another lesson, she addressed her students. “In this box.’’ Cue her setting it down on her desk. “I have an assortment of board games, some that we have discussed, some that we have not. What I’d like you to do is to grab a partner or any others who want to play the same game as you. Remember each game has a specific amount of players that can play at once. I have multiple of the same games should a lot of you opt for a specific one.

“So! Select your partner or partners and come get a game, one that you have never played or not played in a long time.’’

OOC: Hey, guys! There’s twenty four hours for this mini- activity and there is no specific amount of posts required.

Alright, so COOL, they were going to play some games. Not exactly the kind of games Brent had in mind when he came here (ahem...QUIDDITCH), but this seemed like a cool and fun little lesson to sit through. It was way better than taking notes or calculating his Life Path Number.

First of all, he needed a partner. "Anybody need a partner?" he asked, feeling somewhat like a loser. He wished he had some go to person that he always went to instead of begging the class as a whole to work with him. What if NOBODY stepped up and said yes?

Somebody would, though. He didn't think he'd ever had to work with the professor on account of having no friends or something like that. It'd be cool. So...about that partner. Somebody? Anybody?

That pie in the face game Nat mentioned sounded cool.

WAIT WAAAAAAAAIT! His answer wasn't listed and it was punny! Dad would have been proud, you know? Even if it wasn't a plant pun...but Derf refused to make any of those on principle.

When it came time to share their favorite board game...well...he didn't really have much experience with muggle ones and he supposed sharing his favorite wizarding one was not the sort of thing that the professor wanted - he really DID like wizard's chess though! Even if he was rubbish at it because he lacked the patience to really sit and think several moves ahead...which should come as no surprise to anyone to had seen his duel with Abey. Much more of a spur of the moment act-now-think-later sort of person. OH OH! And Snitch Snatcher! He LOVED that game most of all...

That being said...DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS?! Derf heard literally nothing after the dragons part...but he was already off in his own little La La Land thinking about the possibilities of hatching a dragon egg in the Hogwarts dungeons. THAT seemed possible...Potions lab and all...with the fires there...and he still had his fireseed from Herbology tucked safely away in his trunk in his dormroom so...

Oh wait...they were moving on? To...what?

Once again, the Hufflepuff had not been paying attention and missed instructions...

Aha there it is! Sneaky Prof be hiding them treasure trove of board games behind her desk, no wonder he couldnt see it.

He stood up and went to look at the games-- and then the Professor said that last bit. Something he hasnt played at all or in a long time? Aww nuts so he cant do Monopoly? He was looking forward to that, although it has been a while since he actually played it with his dad or with anybody for that matter.

And then his blue-green gaze fell upon CLUE. Oh this is something he played too, and its been even longer since he last investigated anyone being smacked with a candlestick in the library.

Default please let me know if you grab her, anyone XD I'm sick so not checking in super much
lives in a hobbit hole || Ern and Touz's Nuzzle || roflysst || looking at a seed packet

Okay, Char didn't know how to play ANY of those games, for the record. But she was suddenly super interested in how to give them a magic twist. That would be fun, right? But because she wasn't really sure about which game was which or which she might like better or anything of that sort, she didn't rush over to pick one, just looked around as people hustled to grab certain games.

Oh, and she was wondering something now. She stuck her hand up.

"Professor how long do these games take to play?"

Erm. Etta wanted to play chess but also thought it would be interesting to try something new? Like.. maybe.. snakes and ladders? She'd never played it before so it would be challenging and interesting. Hopefully.

But finding a partner was always kind of a problem. She sighed and stood up, randomly waving her arms like a completely crazy person because how ELSE to attract attention? "Hi!" She said loudly, hoping someone would just agree to play with her already. "Anyone?" Partner?

Oh, and she was wondering something now. She stuck her hand up.

"Professor how long do these games take to play?"

Yes now they were getting to the fun stuff. Playing the board games they had been talking and learning about. The fourth year got up and headed over to the desk to find a game, and people to play with. Something she had never played or hadn't played in a while. If she was being honest she hadn't played any board games in a long time. So this was actually going to be easy to pick out one.

It's not that long of a game but its really fun." Showing the older girl the game box. In case she didn't know what it was.

Carlton was quick to his feet when professor Stewart gave them the cue to GO. He shoved away from the table and ran to the front of the room towards the board games. No running in class? Then you shouldn't have brought games! He looked over at them and saw some being snatched right in front of him. He needed a partner QUICK! Before all the good games were gone!

Carlton looked over at Etta and jumped up and down on the spot, waving one arm in the air. "Me! Pick me! I want to play!" He grabbed the game 'Snakes and ladders'. Mainly because it had snakes on it (and because he was worried he might end up with chess which he had no idea how to play).

With the game tucked under his arm he made a beeline over to Etta. He held the game out in front of him. "What about this one?!" He beamed at her.

Henry did not always take notes in this class, though he did have his parchment out on his desk. Honestly, he probably spent more time doodling than note-taking. It wasn't as if he was any sort of artist, quite the opposite actually, but it was more that he had a lot of energy and he found this to be an acceptable way to release it while in class. Maybe he should also write stuff down, but he thought he kind of knew most of it anyway considering his family.

He didn't offer an answer for the first question, mostly because he thought it straightforward and others had already answered. And the second.. well, he might have said Apples to Apples as he really did like playing that one when he'd visit the muggle side of his family for holidays. Though they played that pretty much every holiday anymore and, while it was a fun game, he was starting to get tired of it. Class was moving on anyway and he was pleased to see that they'd be playing games for class. Awesome!

He followed the rest of the class up to the selection of games and he spotted the game of Cluedo right as Ace seemed to see it. That was a good game too and it had been a little while since he'd played it. "Hey Ace, wanna play?" he grinned as he picked up the box. "Maybe we should get someone else to join us too.." He couldn't quite remember, but he thought it was best played with at least three... and maybe up to like six people? Maybe it was possible to just play with two, but it was less challenging with the clues and such. But it could still be fun.

She listened and nodded to the professor. It seemed kind of messy, but at the same time quite fun. Though she assumed it wasn't what they were going to do today so she just kept quiet and listened to the other games. When it was time to go play them Nat looked around not sure at all what to do or who to play with.

She saw Henry go over to Ace. She hadn't spoke to the boy since the portal and she felt bad for this. His sister would be disappointed in her for not keeping a better eye on him. Getting up she went over and gave a forced small smile. "Mind if I join you?" It really didn't matter where she went she wasn't going to know how to play any of these games. Even with her knowledge on muggles games was not something she had ever done.

"How do you play?"

They were going to play games now, which was fun. It wasn't often that you just got to play a game in class. Even though he had mentioned Life, Olly didn't want to play that one. Not right now. He honestly didn't care which one he played, as long as it wasn't a word game like Scrabble. He didn't like those because he wasn't very good at them. He reached over and nudged Noelle. "Play a game with me." He was hoping she'd choose one too.

To...what?

Once again, the Hufflepuff had not been paying attention and missed instructions...

...but this guy hadn't sooooooooooooo....he was going to stick with this guy.

"I DO!" he said with a wave of both his arms just in case the older boy needed help finding who the voice belonged to. Yup, this first year over here HI HELLO?!

If they were playing games, Kane was DEFINITELY going to grab his bro. They'd played lots of board games growing up, so it was only natural that he partnered with him for this activity! He wondered if they had any games that they had never played before...his personal favorite was Ticket to Ride, where you had to build trains and connect towns, but it didn't look like the professor had that. Booo. Unless he couldn't see it...

ANYWAYS...

"Derf! Brent! Let's do a group of three!" he suggested happily as he bounded up to them. Well, it wasn't really a SUGGESTION. Kane was joining their group whether they wanted him or not. Hehe.

Leon knew exactly what sort of game he was going to play! He instantly moved to the box and picked up scrabble.. he loved this game! And now he just needed someone to play it with him! He hadn't played it in forever though. Not since he had started coming to Hogwarts..

He moved back to his seat and started to set the game up..

"Would anyone want to play scrabble with me? " The seventh year asked the class and then looked over at Juno.. hoping that she would want to play with him as well. Playing board games with his girlfriend sounded super fun and they got to do it in class!

How awesome was that?

"You'll play with me right Jun? " He asked her with a smile.

Brent didn't have to wait long for a partner. Derf, a pretty hyper and fun-to-be-around Hufflepuff dude, spoke up and claimed him. Brent grinned at the boy, because it was hard not to, and waved back. "Cool, man. Let's rock this," he said, scooting over closer to Derf. He was just about to ask Derf what it was he wanted to play, when the little bro spoke up, too.

"Let's do it," Brent agreed, glad to see Kane. So he DID still exist. "Dude, where have you been lately? Our daily schedules must be nothing alike." It felt like he never saw the little bro, and even when they did share a class, there were so many people that it was hard to find just one of them.

"So did any of you have an idea about what you want to play?" he asked. "What about Twister? That's technically a board game, since you have that little spinner." He shrugged. It was a long shot, but it was his idea. He welcomed ideas from Derf and Kane, too.

Playing games.. This seemed to be a trend in their classes now, but Rooney was used to his Professors doing similar things. He remembered when all they did in classes was drawing and painting. Now that had been overwhelming after a while, but he was content with the game distractions from having to use his wand. He had got up to have a look at the selection of games available, turning to see how most of the class had already grouped together. Perhaps he shouldn't have been looking for so long...

Ah, scrabble! Rooney turned at the question and manoeuvred his way towards Leon. "I'll scrabble with you."

Noelle remembered playing that as a kid.

Heading back over to Olly, she plopped down. "Candyland!" They'd need more players though. "Anyone else wanna join us??"

Just what she had been thinking! Wow, awesome. "Great. I wanted to play that game! I've heard a lot about it and thought it would be nice to try something new."

Rula hadn't played any of these games really - except chess, of course, but more in the form of Wizard's Chess, so she wasn't sure if that counted. Either way, she wasn't going to pick that one to play. It'd probably be more fun to pick something totally new. At least, hopefully. Hopefully it wasn't something long and complicated.

But which one was she going to pick? None of them instantly stood out to her. So...maybe just pick one at random and hope for the best?

Sounded like a plan.

She walked up to the box with all the games in it and grabbed the first one that caught her eye.

Battleship? Well, okay then.

"Anyone want to play this with me?"

Oh, and she was wondering something now. She stuck her hand up.

"Professor how long do these games take to play?"

Kay watched with great happiness as the students sorted themselves out. She heard a snatch of conversation here and there- discussion about which game they wanted to play. So far, everything seemed to be going well and she hoped this would continue. Then there was a question for her. “Excellent question, Ms Kettleburn! It actually takes quite some time for certain games such as Monopoly. However, some like Snakes and Ladders do not take as long. There is no specific time frame for a game. Sometimes it depends on the amount of players taking part since more players equal a more lengthy game.’’ This reminded her of something.

It was a good thing she was usually adroit in planning things when it comes to her lessons and she was so glad this important bit had not slipped her mind. “It is quite alright if you do not finish your games by the time the class is over. I’ll leave the boards exactly as it is if you want to come back later as long as you’re not breaking curfew. If you prefer to restart, I’ll be putting any remaining games from this box in the Fun Room.

“Once you’ve all got into groups and have selected your game, you may go ahead and begin playing. If you’re unsure of a rule or how the game goes, that’s not a problem. Each game has their instruction booklet! Have fun, everyone! I’ll be here observing.’’

OOC: Haiii, my peoples! Soooo, this is the main activity and the final part of the lesson which will come to an end on Saturday 25th of March at 11:00 PM EST. Remember, catching up is always allowed during my lessons so of course it’s not too late to do so if you’re lagging

Awesome!

Oh hey look its Henry "Hey bud! You play Clue?" because even amongst Muggles this game wasnt as common as some boardgames maybe because it requires some brain power. He grabbed the boardgame and started to look for somewhere they can play. It was then that he heard Nat chimne in "Hey Nat!" Oh she doesnt know this game, Yup definitely needs some visual aids. He picked a table and opened up the box, flipping open the game board and letting Nat take a gander at the game pieces "Its a whodunit game basically. We figure out the murderer, the murder weapon and where the murder took place. This game board shows the rooms where that could happen. These tiny tokens are representations of the murder weapons and these people tokens are your list of suspects. You get to pick a character too, they have the funnest names-- Ms Scarlet for this red token, Professor Plum for this purple one, Colonel Mustard for this yellow one.... " this is why he got pulled into the game in the first place. He just got a kick out of those names...
