Derf felt SPECIAL. Despite his poor performances in lessons with general spellwork, Professor Hirsch had still presented him with the opportunity to duel with someone an ENTIRE year above him and the first year was determined. Almost as determined as he was to become fluent in parsletongue - at least at the moment. Merlin knew how his mood would change after the duel or after he had a stomach full of pumpkin juice.
Hopping up on the platform, the first year pulled the pocket of his trousers out to give Scamander a quick grin before retrieving his wand from his robe's pocket and taking his ready stance against his housemate after bowing. He knew Kane was preeeetty good at spells based on what he had seen from classes, better than him at least ... but then again that was expected considering Kane WAS older...so Derf knew he needed to be MORE aggressive than he had been with his dormmate in practice. Like like...just ONE spell wasn't going to be nearly good enough!
So it was a good thing that this little Hufflepuff had been putting in some extra practice!
"S-Slugulussss Eructo!" he chirped, hurtling arguably the first year's favorite spell and one that he had discussed in great length with his friend Slate. It WAS how the Slug Pit came to be, you know? At least that was the story that he was telling everyone! And since it seemed like secretions were on the menu...Derf decided to follow up with another send sent a Curse of the Bogies in the older Hufflepuff's direction followed by juuuuuuuust one more. JELLY FINGERS CURSE!

Kane wasn't sure if he should go easy or not on this kid...he was, after all, a whole year younger than him, but since Hirsch had paired them together, did that mean that he thought Derf could hold his own against him? Or was it simply just the way the numbers had worked out? Kane wasn't usually one to peek at what his classmates were doing during lessons, so he had to admit that he had no idea what Derf was capable of, because he simply hadn't been paying attention. Who knew what Hirsch meant putting them together...it was likely just how things worked out, right?
Or did it mean that he thought Kane was a whole year BEHIND with his spellwork? That he NEEDED the easy opponent? Hmm.
He didn't have much time to figure out his jumbled thoughts, however, because as soon as his wand had been drawn and he bowed, Derf threw all he had at him. That was what it felt like, at least, since Kane had NOT been expecting all those spells. SO MANY ALL AT ONCE. GEEZ KID, CALM DOWN!
Alright, Derf DEFINITELY could hold his own. Now the real question was - could Kane?
He had expected Derf to throw one spell at him, so he managed to side step the first spell he sent at him. Was that...the slug one? The one that made you PUKE up slugs?! GROSS DERF! Despite being clear of that first one, he hadn't expected a second spell to be headed towards him...or a third.
Yup. Both the Jelly-Fingers Curse and Curse of the Bogies hit him. First, the bogies - his eyes began to well up with tears, and his nose immediately became stuffy. He barely had time to react to THAT before his wand clattered to the floor, having been dropped by his shaky fingers from the third spell Derf had thrown at him. Merlin. Now he had to get THAT back.
He reached down and picked his wand up off the floor, although it was hard to get a good grip on it. He had to practice SQUEEZE his fingers around the wand to make sure it wouldn't fall again. How was he supposed to cast like this? Quite frankly - he couldn't. There was only one thing to do. "Finite" he muttered, pointing at his non-dominant hand. To his relief, his fingers returned to normal and his sighed - before coughing and nearly hacking up a lung from the effects of the other spell.
Did he try and undo that one too? Nah, a head cold he could deal with. For now, at least. He wasn't sure how long he could keep it up, with the blurry vision from the watery eyes and the constant sniffling he was now doing, but he'd at least try.
NOW time for some PAYBACK.
He decided to start with something physical right off the bat - because this was DUELING after all, and Kane was a little annoyed with this head cold right now. "Flipendo!" he exclaimed, aiming at the younger boy. He DID feel kind of bad about this, but again - this was dueling club. He couldn't feel bad about this. They knew what they were getting in to!
Still, Kane was just so darn HUFFLEPUFF and couldn't bring himself to just throw his KO punch at the kid JUST yet. So instead he figured he'd slow him down a bit. "Locomotor Mortis!" he exclaimed, aiming another spell at him.
That should be good to start with. GAH THIS RUNNY NOSE.

THEY WORKED! OH OH OH OH THE SPELLS HAD WORKED!
Derf was SO excited to see that he had successfully cast not one not two but THREE spells in rapid succession that he had spent hours upon hours practicing that he sort of forgot he was supposed to keep dueling and proceeded to jump up and down in celebration. Not at the expense of Kane though. He did feel a tiny DING of guilt seeing his spells hit...but he was able to quickly dismiss those because this WAS dueling club and this sort of thing happened. It was just a fact.
So he was back to celebrating...and in the next instant he was being thrown backwards with a dramatic twirl and landed a few feet back on his bum and legs thrown haphazardly to either side of him for additional discomfort. "Ooooooooooooooooooooooooh," he moaned as the wind was quite literally knocked out of him despite there being no blow to his chest. It was NOT necessary given just HOW he had landed.
Roooooolling on to his side and then taking another moment to breathe in and out, the Hufflepuff got himself back to his feet with a bit of a lopsided stance because that somehow made the owie feel less, well, owie.
Just in time too as there was another spell coming his way.
Reflex was far from a thing for the Hufflepuff, but he HAD been telling himself that any spell that came at him meant he would be trying his best to perform a proper Shield Charm - something that was a bit of a hit and miss but ALSO had been practicing loads because that first Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson had just been embarrassing. "PROTEGO!" he shouted with the enthusiasm of a niffler in Gringotts, which helped produce an especially strong charm for his skill level - it really was a mixed bag when it came to the execution.
Apparently Derf was just going to focus his attention on the older Hufflepuff's nose, because the next spell to come shooting out of the first year's wand was a pus-squirting hex. MORE SECRETIONS!

Derf had come to PLAY, that much was becoming clear.
Despite the fact that he could barely see thanks to his stuffy nose and watery eyes, Kane couldn't help but grin when he saw the boy FLY through the air as his knockback jinx successfully made contact. Ok, he SHOULD have felt really bad about that - and he DID - but it was also satisfying in a way.
To Kane's surprise, Derf was actually able to deflect his leg locker curse, which was a shame because Kane really wanted to see that one in action. Ah well. Thankfully, since the spell had hit the shield and slowed quite a bit, he had time to counter with a shield as well. HaHA! Take THAT! "Protego!" he exclaimed, casting the shield in front of him to simply defend against the jinx. That would have been an unfortunate turn of events.
Speaking of unfortunate events...
The spell that hit him next didn't seem to do anything at first...until he realized his nose was even MORE stuffy than before. Wait...had he made his nosy even MORE runny? But...what? Why?! Did Derf just want to see him all snotty and disgusting?! It wasn't just stuffy either - there was pure PUS coming out of Kane's nostrils, and it was taking all his will power to not keel over and puke on the floor. It was more before of the texture than anything else...
Sensing that this kid REALLY liked the jinxes, Kane cast an Anti-Jinx spell over himself. He'd been practicing that one ever since he stumbled upon it in a book a few months ago. He figured it would come in handy at some point - and now was that time. Now that he was armed, he decided to send the Stinging Jinx Derf's way, hoping to get a few hits in now that he was guarded (for the time being) from jinxes. Hopefully he'd get enough hits in that the duel would be over, and he could stop this stupid head cold!

Play was certainly one way to put it, although the truth of the matter was that the first year had absolutely no idea what he was doing and was just EXCITED to be dueling period. Excitement that only proceeded to grow when his second spell at Kane's nose hit. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSS!
What could he say? He had a thing for secretions.
Celebratory dancing, however, was cut short as the older Hufflpuff threw another spell his way. With no time to draw his own wand in retaliation, Derf dove and rolled out of harms way and with such enthusiasm that he nearly rolled right off the platform.
Laying flat on his chest, Derf was just about to push himself up from the ground when a thought struck him. Thrusting his wand forward at Kane's shoes, and tried his luck with a Stickfast Hex.

Huh. Derf was nimble. Kane frowned in disappointed that his stinging hex didn't make contact - he needed to retaliate for all the GROSS SUBSTANCES coming out of his nose right now!
Wiping away the pus/snot combo coming out of his nose onto his sleeve (and trying again not to gag over all of this) he plotted his next move as soon as he'd been hit with Derf's spell. He was stuck here now, but that was ok by him - if Derf wanted to do that to him, he'd do the same to him!
"Immobulus!" he exclaimed, aiming at him and hoping that he made contact. If not - well, he was going to have to exhaust himself avoiding it (or so Kane hoped, Derf was proving to be a surprise to him so who really knew...)

Derf be nimble, Derf be quick! Derf could....er...well...no he couldn't leap over a candlestick.
Not anymore at least.
No sooner had the first year finally pushed himself up off the ground triumphantly after seeing another spell hit his second year housemate that his housemate's retaliation came. Wand still clutched eagerly in his, the blonde attempted to cast a Shield Charm when his lips REFUSED to move. Not just his lips...but his arms..legs...EVEN HIS EYELIDS WERE STUCK OPEN.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Which would have been the first year's cry of anguish if he were able to MOVE.
LOUD INTERNAL DRAMATIC CRY OF ANGUISH IT WAS THEN!
He had lost...and couldn't even properly cry about it.

What did this duel pairing mean?
Not even Hirsch was sure about that, if he was completely honest with himself. Both were new to the club, and to the school, so he felt as though they could easily learn off of one another in terms of duelling. The age difference mattered a bit - and gave the Mr Westwood a bit of an advantage - but surely it meant that Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne would face a bit of a challenge?
Again, Hirsch wasn't sure.
His thinking was correct because, as the duel progressed, it seemed as though the older Hufflepuff wasn't about to let the younger Hufflepuff off easily. It almost made the man feel bad but the younger boy seemed to be holding his own, in an energetic sort of way. The boy was even celebrating when his spells worked! Maybe the energy was something Mr Westwood could pick up on for his future duels while Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne could pick up on which kind of spells to use.
Oh? Was the duel over? Already?
Hirsch glanced down at his watch and then back up at the pair: one had a problem with his snot (ew) and the other couldn't move an inch. There was no use for the shield to go up, was there? "Excellent!" he said, walking out and towards the pair, "Really excellent! I'm glad you two have picked up the nature of this club so quickly. Before I announce the winner, let me just....." A wave of his wand and all spells still in effect were gone. No more snot-problems for Mr Westwood and Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne could cry as much as he wanted. Except, you know, don't.
"Congratulations, Mr Westwood, on winning this duel. And an exceptional effort, Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne. Really. You put up a great fight." Smile.
Stats: Derfael Ashburry-Hawthorne: 31.7% Kane Westwood: 69.56%
