Default History of Magic Lesson Two - Wizarding Games and Sports

It was a lovely morning in mid April, and Rosalyn couldn't help but be in a good mood despite the horrible circumstances. Not that she was letting it show TOO much. No need to be selfish and think of the good things in her life at a time like this when students were in danger. Students that she loved like her own children. Every day she was terrified that someone else would be snatched away.

As it was, she was waiting by the door for the students to start arriving. Usually she remained seated, but she wanted to keep a watch on the corridor just to be safe. Of course she had provided a snack like always. Today it was a choice between chocolate and vanilla cupcakes.

Lesson Progression:
What do you know about the history of Quidditch?
Give an example of another wizarding game or sport and share a fact about it
Activity

OOC: Hey, guys! While talking is allowed, please try to keep chatting to a minimum. I will be starting the lesson in approximately 24 hours. CLASS HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED

Maybe just how many sign up for the specific tournament? But there could be a maximum so it doesn't go on forever. Like...twenty maybe?" To be honest that was pretty much a random number.

They had so many good ideas. But they hadn't really wrote anything down. So as the other two talked, Hattie tried to quickly jot down everything that they were talking about. She wanted to make sure they had all of their notes down, so that they could have all of their ideas in one place. She wanted to see all of their cool ideas so that they could have one really good idea.

"Each hippogriff having some sort of item of attire that shows off it's team is a really good idea" The blonde nodded as she smiled at the other two. "I wonder if there could be locality teams, like in quidditch and then each one can have their own color? And everyone would know what team it is"

But yes. She agreed with Olly. "A max number is good. We don't want it going on forever"

He was just so wonderful. "It sounds wonderful to me." She beamed and nudged his shoulder back. Where they actually talking about their future together? She liked this. Thinking about having a future with him made her more happy than anything else ever could.

BUT. They must get work done. No time for that now!

Juno watched as he wrote down their ideas. Her handwriting really was way better than his, but it's ok, she couldn't write everything all the time. She watched as he chewed on his pen, and grinned, wondering what he was coming up with.

As he spouted out ides, she thought for a moment about his suggestions. "What about Color Ball or Rainbow Soccer? And the rules should be the same as soccer just the addition of the colors....and maybe the penalty of not using the proper...appendage could be 1 point to the other team?" It didn't have to be difficult. "Should we add brooms to the mix too or wands?" That was a thought.
Leon grinned warmly at his girlfriend.. "Well they aren't as good as your hugs.. but they work. " He said with a grin and he looked down at her, he wanted to touch her face, but that really would get them in trouble so instead he just bumped her shoulder..

"Good! " Leon was going to miss being here with her next term, but he knew they would be together soon, and he had something that he wanted to give her to let her know he was serious about her..

However! Class time!

"Rainbow soccer sounds perfect to me! And yes! I like that idea.. I was thinking of the ball giving you a shock if you use the wrong appendage, but a point to the other team is much safer.. " He said with a grin.. and he scribbled down more notes!

SPOILER!!: Notes

Game: Variation on muggle soccer
Name: Rainbow Soccer
How to play: Ball is charmed to change color and with each color you have to hit the ball a different way.
Blue: Can only kick the ball
Red: Can only pass the ball with your hands
Green: Can only hit the ball with your head
Yellow: Can use all three to hit the ball
Object: To make goals
Rules: same as muggle soccer,
If you hit the ball with the wrong appendage a point goes to the opposite
team
Who can play? : Everyone!

Leon looked thoughtfully at Juno.. "Maybe no brooms.. I don't know about wands.. "

Thank Merlin for Hattie who was beginning to write things down too. She smiled at her and looked back at Olly. Opps. She'd thought wrong. "Oh I like that plan better. So a limit of 20 riders and hippogriffs??"

Plus Hattie's thoughts were right on point. "Yes! Exactly!" She grinned. "What about rules??" She asked looking between the both of them. "We obviously don't want the hippogriffs hurt." That was the main thing. The most important. "So like, no fighting or such."

She was thinking about that some more until something else hit her, "What about Thestrals? Something with them. They are invisible to most so it would look like you were just flying alone. It could be pretty cool to see." The ones that could see them would, but how neat for kids to watch people flying alone. The trick of the eye at times was the best for entertainment.

Her focus turned to Skylar as she spoke about some muggle games. "Those seem interesting. How would you play the Hogwarts Monopoly? How would you do the Wizarding money compared to the muggle money?" She was just asking to see if they could expand on the game at all. 'Well Brent and I had just gotten started and we were talking about winged horses. It's kind of one of my passions or at least was until I was kicked a few months ago, but that doesn't matter right now. I just thought it might be neat to think of a game with them."

She glanced at the two to see what their thoughts were.

I like racing in the air and throwing around a ball. I can see where that would relate to Quidditch a little too much, though, so I'm game for some new ideas."

Maybe there was a way to combine their thoughts?

"So I have no idea what this Monopoly is all about, but if we can throw some sports in there somewhere, I'm good," he said. It kind of seemed Nat had an interest, too, although Brent was kind of sad to see their winged horse idea go. Brent started some new notes.

She got that. Sports were pretty awesome but there was also nothing like sitting down on a rainy day with friends or family to play a game. "I don't see why the game couldn't use fake wizarding money, like Muggle Monopoly uses fake dollars." Sky said in response to Nat.

"Basically with Monopoly you roll a dice and you have this markers - a car, a hat, a thimble - though we could use items like a broomstick or a wand for our version. And you move your marker around a square board and try to monopolize different places. With Hogwartsopoly, it would be different places in Diagon Alley or Hogsmeade or the castle ... or we could even use places around London." Sky explained, trying to think how to incorporate sports into it. "We could have these chance cards which have more magical things that happen, like maybe involve magical transport ... or even when you land on a square, you actually go to that place . Or appear to at least... obviously the age on the game needs to be at least 10 to adult. And number players at least two, but as many people as you want could play?"

Time would be quickly dwindling away for them to have available. “I’m Cassie” the Ravenclaw introduced given she had seen the boy around but she didn’t think they had actually interacted much.

As for the task at hand…

“Did you have an ideas to work with?” Cassie questioned to get the bowl rolling. “I was kinda thinking game since then more people can play it.” If it were ever to be actually developed. Sports seemed limited to those willing to get more than a little active which certainly wasn’t for everyone.
Kane tapped his chin with his quill and nodded. "That makes sense. Literally every sport I could think of has probably been invented anyways," he chuckled.

"So were you thinking maybe a dice based game? Or something with a spinner or something?" Kane couldn't think of many games that weren't based around muggle technology...

Leon looked thoughtfully at Juno.. "Maybe no brooms.. I don't know about wands.. "
Juno grinned, "But your hugs are like sunshine bursting through a rainstorm! They more than work, they win." She gave him her best smile and nudged his shoulder gently back. She was pretty sure she had hearts as eyes right now, but she didn't care.

Leon was the best. He always knew how to make her feel better, and how to make her feel loved...though they hadn't said that yet. Just the thought made her face flush a little. But this wasn't the time or place...

Juno grinned at that idea, "Yeah probably a little safer than getting a shock." Juno watched as he filled out the rest of the information about the sport they were creating.

She thought for a moment, "Yeah your probably right. And what would they do with their wands anyway?" She couldn't think of anything that would actually be feasible to add to the game. "I think it sounds great. Should we pitch it to someone else now?" There wasn't much else they could add, unless they had another ball similar to a Snitch but then...what would they do with it?

Ohhh they get to make their own game? The Curly Top rumaged through his bag for some more parchment when he came across his deck of cards.... Oh!

He grabbed his parchment and that deck of cards, laying them both on the table. Heck if he knew enough advanced magic he can probably create a prototype of this game right here right now. But right, game mechanics first...

Text Cut: The Game

Name of Game: Snippity Snappity Boom (a variation of the Muggle electronic game "Minesweeper")
Target Group: Everybody who dont mind a bit of excitement and strategizing
Number of players: Can be played alone or group work
Equipment: a variation of Exploding Snap cards
Gameplay / Rules:
1. The cards are placed face down on a grid.
2. Player selects a card from the grid and turns it over. If its an exploding card, it will go boom and ends that round of the game.
3. If player selects a card that isnt an exploding card:
  • If it has any number between 1-4, it means that there are that many exploding card/s around it.
  • Use the number as a clue to identify which cards explode on the grid. The card with the number indicates that its touching the exploding card with its sides and/or corners.
4. If the player/s has identified which is an exploding card, they cast a dampening charm to keep the card from exploding and can turn it over. If the card was misidentified as a exploding card, its game over.
5. There are "free" cards on the grid. These cards clears/ turns over some of the non-exploding cards, narrowing which cards the player/s has to figure out.
6. Players can mark a card with a simple color spell if they arent sure if said card is explodey or not. But the game cannot be declared finished if there are still colored cards on the grid.
7. The grid can expand / contract depending on the complexity of the game the player/s wants to play.

Tenacius sat back into his seat. He was done right? Well probably a few more details that hasnt occurred to him yet but yeah this was the basics of it. Now if he can just figure out how to make his own deck of Exploding Snap cards work the way he wants it to.

Brent followed the conversation between Nat and Skylar then tried to take more notes as Skylar answered his questions. His quill moved almost faster than he could keep up with as he tried to make notes about everything she said. Merlin, she could talk.

"Alright, so this is what I've got," he said to them. "The name is Hogwartsopology. It's based on the Muggle game Monopoly, but it's based on our wizarding world." He read over his notes to make sure he'd got it all down correctly, then added, "It's aimed toward...kids our age? I really didn't know what to put there, but I guess anybody could play it."

"...and if I understood correctly, the game board has these little squares on it, and we move our pieces around the board of squares. The pieces resemble our wizarding world--brooms, wands, stuff like that," he continued, as he read what he'd wrote. "So what's the goal here? To get the most money and claim the most property?"

Name: Hogwartsopoly

Positions: People will claim pieces that resemble brooms, wands, etc.
Equipment: Board game with squares that you navigate while trying to claim areas for yourself and earn more money (fake wizarding money)

Rula loved working in groups, but it seemed like most of the others had grouped up fairly quickly, so she decided to work alone this time. That was okay too though! She didn't mind.

Although it did make it a little more difficult to come up with a new sport, not having someone else to bounce ideas off of. So she sat there for several minutes, flipping through her textbook at first to see if anything sparked an idea, then absentmindedly playing with the ring on her finger for a few minutes...

Oh! Her ring... Maybe rings could be a part of a sport? Like...a ring toss. But it needed to be more exciting than just that, and when she thought of an exciting sport, Quidditch always came to mind...so maybe some sort of Quidditch-like ring toss. People could fly around on brooms, trying to throw these giant rings onto giant poles. And maybe the poles could be different heights and worth a different amount of points, depending on which one you got rings on. Yeah!

She hurriedly scribbled down her ideas.

Text Cut: Rula's notes
Name: Ring Toss Rula's Rings Ruling Rings Flying Rings
Target Group: Anyone! There could be different maximum heights for the poles, depending on level of experience of players (amateur, pro, etc.).
Number of Players: 4 players on each team
Positions: 2 defenders (the ones who guard the poles and try to keep the other team from getting the rings on the poles), 2 throwers (the ones who try to score)
Equipment: 20 rings for each team, 10 poles on each end of the field
Teams or One-on-One: 2 teams
Rules:
~ The goal is to get as many of your rings onto the opposing team's poles to get the higher score before the game ends.
~ The game ends either when one team gets all of their rings onto the poles OR when time runs out.
~ The time limit is about 30 minutes.
~ The poles are assembled in a pyramid-like fashion on the ground, with one row of 1, then one of 2, then one of 3, and the final row with 4.
~ The first row of poles is the tallest, and then they get gradually shorter with each row.
~ The first row is worth 1 point. The second is worth 2 points per pole. The third is worth 4 points per pole. The fourth is worth 8 points per pole.
~ Players fly on brooms to get around the field.
~ If a player throws a ring and it misses or is knocked away by a defender, they cannot pick it up until they've thrown the rest of their rings.
~ Players may not attack other players.

Hmm...that looked like enough, right? She wasn't entirely sold on the name and was having some trouble with coming up with the right one, but that would have to do for now since she was running out of time. So now she just needed to convince someone it was a good idea?

Olly was glad the girls were writing things down. He'd started with a few things but had gotten a little lost now that they were getting into the more complicated aspects. He wouldn't even know how to write it out but he trusted them to properly describe their game. And he liked the idea of something to signify teams. "If there are a lot of teams we might run out of colors, but there can still be something. Maybe stripes or polka dots if there are a lot?" Just a suggestion. There were a lot of colors, he knew that, but not a lot of popular colors. There could be a team that was cerulean or something but that wasn't really a typical team color.

Rules, right. "Maybe there's a certain distance they have to be away from each other," he suggested. That would keep the Hippogriffs away from each other and prevent fighting. "And the people riding them can't use their wands to sabotage the other riders or anything. It's all about the racing."

Time was running out, and it seemed that no one was really ready to share their ideas with the class. Rosalyn felt that it was probably a good idea to cut that portion out since it wouldn't be fair to cut them points because class was over before they could finish.

That was when Rooney spoke up. She nodded. "Not to worry. We are out of time and since it seems that no one has really gotten to that point, I will not make it required after all." So no, they would not lose points because they didn't have time to share ideas. She would just have to adjust her grading rubric slightly. "If everyone could wrap up and hand in what they have completed, you are free to go."

She smiled at the class. "Thanks for the great lesson, and I hope you all have a good rest of the day." Did it even need to be said that sne was available if anyone wanted to talk? Rosalyn hoped not! She hoped they knew that by now.

OOC: Thanks for the amazing lesson, guys! Really enjoyed it! Class is over now, but I will leave this thread open for a bit so that people have a chance to wrap up if they wish.

Juno heard the professor call time just as they were ready to present it to someone else. "Oh, well. At least we wont lose points. I will turn it in for us." She said to Leon with a wink and smile.

She quickly wrote their names and houses at the top, and then rolled the parchment up, tying it with a white ribbon.

SPOILER!!: Assignment

Leon Kennedy, Ravenclaw
Juno Darcy, Hufflepuff

Game: Variation on muggle soccer
Name: Rainbow Soccer
How to play: Ball is charmed to change color and with each color you have to hit the ball a different way.
Blue: Can only kick the ball
Red: Can only pass the ball with your hands
Green: Can only hit the ball with your head
Yellow: Can use all three to hit the ball
Objective: To make goals
Rules: same as muggle soccer, but If you hit the ball with the wrong appendage a point goes to the opposite team.
Who can play?: Everyone!

Juno packed up her stuff and headed towards the professor. She gently laid the assignment on her desk. Nervously she asked, "Um, Professor? Is there anyway we could talk after class?" She felt really bad about what she did and wanted to talk to her about it privately so she could explain her lapse in judgement.

Rosalyn smiled as she accepted the work from Juno. It was not a real surprise that the girl wanted to talk to her after class. Even though this was a prefect, the others in the classroom would be able to carry out the job and do it splendidly. Then Juno could go about her day as normally as possible given the circumstances.

"Of course. Let's head to my office." This wouldn't take long.
