so sorry, Henry !!!!! Henry was back in class! Daisy had seen both Carlton and the Ravenclaw Prefect when she got in but she had completely missed Henry. Had the boy been hiding or something? He wasn't exactly small or easy to miss. As soon as she heard his voice, she turned towards where the Hufflepuff was sitting and waved enthusiastically. Both hands used. Happy grin in place. HIIIII HIII teammate!!! Did she need to tone it down for him? You know, since he had been gone for a while and Merlin knew what he had been through? Eeeeh, probably but could she help it? NOPE, because he was back and he looked safe. The answers continued, though, and Daisy was finally forced to acknowledge that she was still in a lesson and therefore couldn't really tackle her friend. Still, most people clearly agreed with her. Quidditch was definitely the best sport ever and everybody -- well, almost -- knew a whole lot about it. Including, unsurprisingly, Professor Newton. Daisy nodded along as the staff member shared the information on Quidditch, occasionally taking notes of a few dates. She knew the Quidditch stuff but dates were always confusing in her head. "There's Exploding Snap, Professor." She supplied with a hand raised when she was called upon. The card game was fun, in her opinion, but none of the options offered even came close to Quidditch. Not even Quodpot, honestly. She liked her Quaffles study and reliable, thank you very much. "My advice for any long haired players is to keep your hair in a bun. Also, it doesn't hurt to wear protective goggles." She had learned, the hard way, that she did not look good without eyebrows. |
Once again, Kane felt a LITTLE out of the loop being from America and not Great Britain, as a lot of these sports were totally foreign to him. So, despite having it already been mentioned, he threw out the only thing he knew. He raised his hand into the air. "There's Quodpot, which is really similar to Quidditch. It's very popular today in America, so I'm guessing when the colonists left Great Britain, it was one of those things that took off in the colonies and was kind of phased out here," he explained. |
I'm so sorry. Olivia was trying her absolute hardest to simply focus on Professor Newton and the information cache that had just been dumped on them, but... Well, it was no secret that the Gryffindor had concentration problems, and................. Rooney Bronwyn was here. Seated someplace just behind her, where couldn't look upon his face... Liv didn't like that, and really, she could only assume his position in the room; thanks to the tremor of his voice... Or maybe, no thanks... as it was inspiring the prickling sensation just behind her eyeballs. The one where she knew there would be tears soon enough.... It'd undoubtedly been too long since she'd heard that wonderful sound. Steadying herself, Liv, again, grasped at the heart shaped piece of rose quartz around her neck, taking a few deep breathes. How was it possible to still long for someone this much? To feel dizzy and overwhelmed just by the sound of a person's voice? In a great effort to tear her thoughts away from the back of the classroom, Olivia poured all her energy into amassing the information to the new notebook. There was more than enough of it, to keep her busy... but it failed in drowning out the noise surrounding her; namely more of Rooney's deep tremor .... and a second lovely voice that... she'd failed to note the first time... Was that... Was that CARLTON? Disregarding the fact that it was probably a horrific idea, Liv whipped her head around, longer blonde curls slapping her in the face, as she sought out the smol Slytherin. It took no time to find him... and he was, of course, seated just beside the love of her life.... She only had eyes for Carlton just now, however. A few tears fell, but the smile on her face was bright and genuine. Merlin, she wanted to squish his precious little cheeks. And.... because she couldn't help herself, bright blue eyes shifted to Rooney just a second after. He looked......so good. Just as she remembered him, healthy, vibrant... and alive. Without noticing, tears began silently streaming down her cheeks....and there was nothing Olivia could do to staunch them. His face was one that she thought she may never see again. Not alive and breathing, anyway... and most definitely not after what Brinlee had written. Missing. Rooney had been missing ...but there he was. Right here in front of her face..... Could he still sense her thoughts? Was that connection still in tact? "Duelling."........That's what she'd had in her mind to say about wizarding sports. There were tournaments and everything. Sanctioned ones. So, it counted... Eventually, she tore her greedy gaze away from Rooney's face to restate, "Duelling would be one." She paused to wipe the tears. "They hold sanctioned matches in tournament format."... but that's all she knew... |
Noelle raised her hand. She wasnt too sure if this was actually a sport but she was trying to give different answers than what others were saying. As for the history.... she wasnt too sure. "Umm... Wizard chess? Is that a sport? I dont know much about the history of it but, there are designs og chess boards from the 12th century." There. She had somewhat of an answer. |
Katherine listened carefully, although she'd already known all of that thanks to Genny and the books she'd been reading. She did note that Henry was there, and she hoped she'd catch him after class. For now though, she raised her hand to answer the question: "In Gobstones, the players start the game with 15 marbles each and the goal is to capture all of the opponents'." |
Carlton was grateful professor Newton gave him a smile. Judging from the other students' answer he wasn't giving her the answer she wanted about quidditch. Why had he started to talk about Mr. McLeod? That was just odd. He relaxed when the class shifted their attention back to the professor and the other students. Attending class was too soon. He felt in every fiber of his body. He really wanted to sneak out and leave. But healer Reed urged them to return to school as soon as possible so he stayed put. When Liv turned around to look at him and Roo he gave her a little smile and a small wave. But she looked sad. Why did she look sad? Carlton's smile disappeared and he looked up at Roo for explaination. What was going onnnn?! He didn't like it. Whatever it was, he didn't like it. Why didn't Liv want to sit by them anymore? Did she think they had the portal cooties? Because that wasn't a thing (he hoped). He would get her to come with him to see healer Reed so that he could confirm they weren't contagious. It was perfectly safe for her to sit next to them at class. Was that why she was crying? Because they had the portal cooties? Carlton clenched his fists. He was determined to convince her that wasn't the case. Then they could all go back to the happy little family they were before. As for the second question professor Newton asked, Carlton had no idea. He didn't even know anything about Muggle sports, let alone wizard ones. So he sat quiet this time around. Plus, he hadn't liked the attention his first answer had gotten him. He settled for taking notes. |
Nat was listening and she heard everything that was being said. Her focus just wasn't really there and with quidditch it didn't really interest her all that much. She would fly with friends and her dad, but that was about as far as it went. She didn't even bother with the flying classes given this term. She wouldn't need them. Unless it was a winged horse she had no care for it. Speaking of winged horses she did put her hand up at the next question. "Professor, there are Winged Horse races." Those were even in the Wizarding Olympics that were held. She hadn't been flown one of the horses since the accident, but she still loved them so much and wanted some of her own one day. Her eyes moving around the room she did notice Liv sitting there and noticed the tears. Nat herself had been hiding behind a mask lately so she felt for the girl. She wanted to get up and move next to the Gryffindor, but she didn't know if that would upset her more or not and she didn't want to make other's aware of her tears. So instead Natalia mustered the best encouraging smile she could towards her. |
Skylar had to take a moment to bask in the pride she felt upon the Professor appreciating her answer regarding broomsticks. Because one couldn't play quidditch without first talking about where the concept came to fly came from, so it made sense to her, especially as this was history. The Professor then immersed them in a lecture on quidditch, going into great depths on the history of the sport, briefly mentioning some ancient broom games before approaching another question in regards to other wizarding games and sports they knew about, of which her peers talked about quadpot and gobstones and the ancient broom race. No one brought up any discussion of the ancient broom that Professor Newton brought up at the start of her lecture and there was one that Skylar found quite fascinating, despite how dangerous it was, but to ensure she spoke correctly, the third year flicked through her textbook a moment to find where it talked of the sport. "You mentioned Creaothceann, as an ancient broom game, and it's probably one of the most dangerous games. Players wore cauldrons strapped to their head and well, there's a Gaelic poem in the book that sums up the game nicely...." Eyes flicking down to the page in the book, she read aloud, "'The players assembled, twelve fine, hearty men. They strapped on their cauldrons, stood poised to fly. At the sound of the horn they were swiftly airborne. But ten of their number were fated to die.' It can't get much more tragic than that though, knowing most of the players weren't going to live after the match," Skylar said quietly, feeling rather sad. And the stupid governors think that quidditch was dangerous; no one was fated to die during a quidditch match. |
Rula took a few notes but not as many as she normally tried to write down since she already knew a lot of this stuff, at least in general. She did make sure to write down dates, since those were the parts she usually forgot. She looked around the room as the others continued to give answers for the next question, trying to decide which games she could remember that hadn't been mentioned yet. And since she was watching everyone else, she did notice when Liv was looking back at someone - Rooney? - and crying, and that caused Rula to frown in concern. What was wrong? Was she okay? She wanted to ask, but drawing attention to it in the middle of class would be a terrible idea. So maybe she'd try after class? Then again, maybe she shouldn't then either. People tended to brush off questions like that and say they were fine, especially when it was someone they weren't super close to asking. Rula did consider Liv a friend, but she also knew weren't extremely close, so maybe her asking wouldn't really help. So...maybe she'd just say hi or something after class, if she could. Just to let her know she cared, even if the other girl didn't want to talk. Sometimes it was helpful just knowing other people cared about you. At least, Rula thought so. So she turned her attention back to the lesson, deciding to go with one of the first games that popped into her head. "There's Shuntbumps which was mentioned earlier. It's where players try to knock each other off their brooms, and it was really popular in...Devon, I think? It's mostly just a game for kids now though." |
Just a big catch up post don't mind me. Sitting here the time, she had been hiding in a seat in the back of the room, she didn't greet anyone as she came in and really didn't have any intention on doing anything in this lesson today. She really wasn't in the mood of History of Magic today. She had all the intentions of at least sitting in the back of the room quietly taking notes. That was until she heard the word Quidditch, her hand shot straight up. " There are seven players on a team and there are 14 teams in the British and Irish league." Her dad played Quidditch, and did her uncle he played too. SO maybe now this lesson got a little more.... Likable? It wasn't that she didn't like History of Magic, it was just it was so borinnnnng, talking about things of the past. Her cousin senses were tangling..... It was too long after that the Hufflepuff had looked up and caught sight of Olivia. She was so glad that her cousin was back. She wasn't sitting far from her by not far enough to give her a hug or anything. Not in the intimidate area that she could get to her. In lieu of a hug, Kat got some of the the tissues that she had been carrying around with her lately. Merlin knows she had been needing them. "Here," Raising up the tissues, once she had made sure that Liv seen the tissues she levitated them to her. It was a lucky thing that they were close enough that she could do that. Now that she had taken care of her dear cousin her mind went back to the lesson. Other wizarding games... mmmm "Flying Seahorse Fishing." Yes, that was a thing. She had heard of it before though she didn't understand it. Muggle fishing was boring, because all you did was sit still in a boat or on the shore all day and wait for the fish to bite. |
phone post :/ "Wizard's Chess is another one, and it's like Muggle Chess except that the pieces move by themselves and they destroy each other. Personally I prefer Muggle chess, but it is fun when your piece tries to argue with you on where it should move." But pieces moving by themselves was totally not necessary, in her opinion. |
Answer and Leon <3 Juno grinned at the five points she received for her answer. She knew Quidditch very well despite them not playing it at Hogwarts anymore. When Leon nudged her and grinned at her, she nudged him back, smiled and winked. She liked when he did that. Then he was pulling his hand away with a sad look on his face, which made her look up. She caught a glimpse of the look the professor gave them, and looked back a Leon giving him a wink and a small smile. She understood. He didn't want to get her into trouble, and she didn't want to get him into trouble either, so she lifted her hands, resting them on the desk in front of her. Juno had an answer. She raised her hand and when called on answered, "You mentioned Shuntbumps before. It is kind of a children's game now, but when it was first invented it was for everyone. It was created in Devon, England I believe. You had to knock as many people off of their brooms as possible. Last person still on their broom won the game." It was a fun game she and her siblings used to play. River always won though. Jerk. Juno read Leon's response, and wrote back, 'I wish there was but with the curfew and new rules you aren't allowed...It's ok though. At least I get a lot of time to relax in the Common Room...well, mostly.' She sighed and nudged the parchment back to him, hoping the professor would think they were just writing or comparing notes. |
SPOILER!!: Quadpot SPOILER!!: Gobstones SPOILER!!: Wizard's Chess SPOILER!!: Shuntbumps SPOILER!!: Other Answers SPOILER!!: Silent One Anyway, it was time for them to move on to the activity portion! Were they already guessing that Rosalyn was going to go along with trying to get them to come up with something on their own? Even though she liked to change things up, she DID love getting them to be creative and inventive. This was no exception to the rule. "That's enough with the discussion. Now it's time to get started on the activity." Hopefully they would like it, but she would see for herself soon enough. Of course she was always available to offer help whenever needed. "For today, I would like for you to come up with your own magical game or sport! This can be something that you come up with completely on your own, or a take off from a muggle game or sport - think Gobstones or Wizard's Chess. Shrunken Head Bowling as well, I suppose." That counted even if she wasn't really a fan. "If you are having a hard time with this, you are welcome to work in groups. No more than THREE. Of course you can also do this on your own." That was always an option because some people just preferred doing things that way. She picked up a piece of chalk so that she could write on the blackboard. As she continued to speak, she began to jot things down. "Some things to consider: the name of your game/sport, the targeted group of people who would be playing it, how many players would be involved, the positions and equipment used (if required), if it's team based or one on one, and of course any rules." That seemed like a pretty good list to her. "Of course any other considerations are welcome if necessary." She wasn't trying to limit them in any way. Now for the fun part! "Once you have come up with your sport or game, I would like you to pair off with another person - or group - and pitch your idea to them as if you want to interest them in playing it." Did that make sense to them? If not, Rosalyn was more than happy to explain things further to them. "You have until the end of class to work on this assignment, and as always you are more than welcome to ask me any questions or for assistance if needed." OOC: Great job, guys! As Rosalyn said, for this activity, you are to come up with a wizarding game/sport that is either completely new, or a take on a muggle one. Keep in mind the considerations that are to be made. Once done with that, team up and pitch your idea to someone else/another group. Please no more than THREE people per group! There is NO posting requirement for this, and you have until 11:59 pm EST on March 21st to get this completed. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask either me or Rosalyn! |
Starting the project and Juno! Leon but his lip as Juno got reprimanded by Professor Newton and the seventh year instantly felt bad! He shouldn't have responded to the note, though with the curfew going on they barely saw each other.. He sighed softly and looked down at the desk for a moment, barely listening as the Professor explained what they should be doing.. Invent a game hmm? Normally the Ravenclaw would be all over it.. but now? He looked over at Juno and gave her an apologetic half smile. "I'm sorry Jun.. be my partner? " he asked her softly, at least this way they could talk and work at the same time.. He pulled out a piece of parchment and then grabbed his pen and sighed.. Games hmmm... "Maybe we should make a magical version of soccer or American Football? " He wasn't super sure about it.. |
Post 1: Anyone up for a group??? Wow. There were a few wizarding sports that Noelle didnt know about. Shuntbumps? That did seem interesting though. She didnt know if she wanted to play it, but it might be fun watching others play. Maybe they needed to have a safety net or something to keep them safe. Okay! SO todays lesson. They were to create a sport. Merlin. Noelle was not good at sports. She was good at defense and transfiguration. Tripping over herself... but sports? No. "Olly, help??" She asked but figured he would already want to. Plus Hattie was on her other side. "Wanna team up?" Noelle asked and nudges her on the shoulder. She could use all the help she could get. |
Noelle and Hattie <3 Quote:
"Any ideas what we should do? We can do sort of a magical spin on a muggle game? That might be easiest?" But Olly didn't have any ideas at the moment. He looked to the girls to see if they had any ideas. |
Looking for a partner/group! Never in his life did Brent think he would be THIS excited about a History of Magic project, but he was. He most DEFINITELY was. Sports was just right up his alley, and even though this assignment wasn't really the same as playing Quodpot or Quidditch, it was close enough! He really didn't want to work by himself, though. He'd tried that a few times, but it was pretty boring and made the assignment lame. "Anybody want to partner up?" he asked. As he waited for a partner, he started thinking about what kind of game he might want to invent and why. All his ideas kept going back to sports that already existed, though. Maybe he could combine some ideas or something... |
You knowww how sometimes people stopped paying attention and kind of their mind wandered and kind of maybe they missed what was going on and only figured it out after everything had moved on? That was Charlotte right now. Whoops! And she TOTALLY would have said all about competitive dueling had she got her answers in in time, but oh well, too busy being lost in thought. Mostly she'd been mentally drafting a letter for Daxton. He needed updates and also she missed him, so obviously it was a two birds with one stone thing. But umm.... groups? They were... to work in groups about something? This was a great excuse to work with some friends! So who would it be??? |
catching up! .........why were some people getting points for their answers and not others? It seemed like half of them got awarded and Henry didn't see any real reason, like they were extra insightful or something. So he was confused by it. He had given plenty of information, too. Was his answer not good enough? He wasn't really that worried about it though and he tried to focus on class again, catching an exaggerated movement out of the corner of his eye. Oh...! Daisy. Hi. He returned her smile and wave, although a bit more subdued that her very enthusiastic ones. He missed practicing with her, but maybe they could still find time and a way. Henry would have expanded on gobstones for the next question as he was fairly knowledgeable about it, but class was moving on before he had the chance. Coming up with a game or sport would normally be something up his alley, if he had been in a better headspace. But he would give it his best effort. He watched some people start to group up and he looked around a bit. Although he often was open to working with new people and making a new friend, he really needed to be with someone he was comfortable with today. He glanced at Daisy who had caught his eye earlier. Maybe she'd want to...? Or Char? She appeared currently partner-less and might want to work with him. Or both..? |

Would it really be that hard to figure out the origins of the horse racing? Natalia wondered if they could find it in books somewhere. It had to be old, but there had to be some type of recording of it. It was still popular today and it was an Olympic event. She had seen it in WSPM before when flipping through the magazine to see if Joe was in it at all. The horses were all so pretty. Anyway, they seemed to be making their own sport? First, it was their own house and now it was a sport. Interesting, maybe they could make up their own school next. They had all the other pieces. Nat looked around when they were going to work with someone and saw Brent. It was times like these that she was kind of glad that he wasn't in many of her classes it wasn't hard to find a partner without getting upset. "Hey Brent would you want to work with me?" |
Quote:
"Can I work with you?" Was that okay with him? That's what that look had been for, right? Also, what exactly were they supposed to be doing? Char leaned over to look at his notes, in an attempt to figure that out. |
Henry & Char As soon as Professor Newton mentioned something about pairing up, Daisy's head turned to Henry. So she didn't have to wait until the end of the lesson to talk to him, after all! The tackling would definitely wait. For now, anyway. The Professor hadn't even finished talking and already the Slytherin was up on her feet, making her way towards the boy. Charlotte was there already but they could work in groups, right? Group it was. "You're back!" That was what blurted out of her mouth as soon as she found herself infront of the Hufflepuff. It probably wasn't the right thing to say, but Daisy was hardly known for her tact. No, the little excited bouncing movement she was doing infront of the pair was much more like her. Even if it sort of did look like she needed a bathroom break. But Henry was back!!! How could she not be happy??? "Can I join you two?" She finally asked, turning to look at Charlotte and grinning at the girl. It felt like Charlotte was the only Gryffindor she hadn't talked to, which, clearly, was a disgrace and completely unacceptable. "I'm Daisy. I like you, you're awesome." Which probably sounded weird but did this Slytherin care? Take a guess, there. |
Text Cut: Bazinga So Brent was officially out of ideas. He still wasn't able to come up with anything past sports that were already out there. He shifted his weight, as if that would miraculously change things, but nothing happened. Just when he thought all hope was lost, Nat came and saved the day! "Sure do, Nat," he said, grinning and adjusting his position so he was now facing her. "Alright, so, what have you come up with?" he asked. She was a seventh year, and the Head Girl, so surely she had loads of ideas on this kind of thing, right? "I keep going over ideas in my head, but they keep leading me back to sports that already exist. Were you thinking about a brand new sport, or something like a mix of stuff?" he added. This kind of thing was literally right up his alley. It was too bad he was horrible at coming up with the ideas. |
Post 1 - Declan and Althea. Levi tried very hard not to yawn for 543543th time because he didn't want Newton to think she was boring him. It wasn't her fault OWLs were looming in a little too close for comfort--or maybe it was a little bit, what with being the History of Magic professor, but whatever--so Levi did the right thing and as soon as the professor told them to look for partners, he stood up, turned around to look at the wall and yawned. There. "Do you two have any ideas or what?" He was clearly addressing his siblings because of course he was. Who else would he partner with? There was no else he'd rather do the activity with, which was excellent for him because it wasn't like Declan or Althea would have given him a choice. Anyway. "I have no ideas." All his good ideas had gone to finding inventive ways to absorb all the magical knowledge he could without losing himself in the process. So far, it'd worked pretty okay! Though it was true he'd been having trouble sleeping and then when he did he slept so deeply he even had trouble waking up. And then there was those times it felt like he was beginning to forget how to go on about the sleeping thing like a regular person. But that was neither here nor there. And he didn't like to dwell too much on that, anyway. "Oh, what about Voleyball but instead of actual Voleyball the ball is a combination of a bludger and an exploding snap?" He leaned forward, fingers drumming against the table. "And the first one who drops it, well--you can figure out the rest." There. Levi stood up and went to get another cupcake from the back of the room. Sugar was CLEARLY just what he needed. |

Unfortunately, Henry hadn't really taken notes today. He felt he knew enough about Quidditch that even when the professor spouted off a bunch of historical facts that he hadn't completely known, he didn't feel the need to write any of that down. And the rest had been kind of a wash. Like.. he didn't need to know this stuff for OWLs, right? And even if he did, he felt like he knew enough about sports. They were kind of his favorite thing. So when he noticed Char leaning over to peer at his notes, he slid them closer to her to show her the poorly drawn doodle of an in-progress Quidditch game, complete with stick figure players. And he gave her a little shrug. No notes, but at least the professor wrote down the requirements for their activity on the board which was always helpful. He was just about to ask her what she thought about inviting Daisy to join them as well when he saw the Slytherin was already making her way over. Her exclamation took him by surprise, but he gave her a small smile. "Yeah, I'm... I'm back," he confirmed with a slow nod. To be fair, he had been back for a little while, but he was slowly getting back into a normal schedule, so maybe she hadn't seen. He did have a bigger smile for her bouncing. "Sure, why don't you join us.." He really didn't think Char would mind at all, but he glanced over to her just to make sure. "So, we're supposed to create a game, right?" He supposed they should come up with some basics before they got to any specifics. "Any ideas? Whatever game we come up with, I think it should have at least one ball." All the best sports did. |
