History of Magic Lesson One - The Founding of Hogwarts
Even though it is a cold morning, it is not easy to notice upon stepping inside the History of Magic classroom. Professor Newton has added extra warmth by using heating charms though she wouldn't be opposed to placing more if students are still feeling cold.
The seating arrangement is the same as always, and Professor Newton can be found sitting at her desk, waiting eagerly for the students to arrive and take their seats. Of course snacks are provided on her desk as usual, today's being a plate of shortbread that has been charmed to keep replenishing itself. Just because it is early December doesn't mean that Christmas cookies can't be enjoyed, and these ones are shaped like candy canes, stars, bells, and Christmas trees.
OOC: Welcome to the first History of Magic lesson! While this is the first class that we are RPing, keep in mind that this is NOT the first lesson of term. I hope you all have read the class rules. Next post will be in approximately 24 hours. Some talking is okay, but PLEASE keep socializing to a minimum.CLASS HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED.

Brent stepped back and admired his work. Dude. It looked kind of awesome if he did say so himself! In a way, he kind of wished he could belong to his new house! Maybe then there would be some sports here at Hogwarts that he could participate. Man, he missed broom sports. He looked at his crest with a bit of jealousy in his eyes before he reminded himself that The Aviators were just make believe and didn't really exist other than in his own mind.
Sigh.
He set to work fixing his design to his parchment, so that the crest was on top, and the description of the house and crest were on the bottom. He did a really cool job if he did say so himself. Can he sign up for The Aviators now?

The Aviators
The name of my house is The Aviators. We're named that, because we are the kids who excel at flying and playing sports on brooms. It's mainly focused on Quodpot and Quidditch, but anybody who flies well or plays sports on brooms well is a likely member.
The colors are sky blue and yellow after the color of the sky and the color of the sun. Our house mascot is a bird with a really wide wingspan that looks like it is flying free in the skies.
Our house crest represents all this. It's a shield featuring the house colors. The bird is on the front of it, and there are a wide pair of wings coming out from each side of the shield. A ribbon is draped across the front of the shield, and the house name is in bright, yellow letters across the front.
House: The Aviators Why? This is a house for people who love broom sports, like Quidditch or Quodpot. You have to be really good at it, too. None of this 'Oh, I like it, but I can't really play' stuff. This is the house for the hardcore athletes! Animal: Bird, no idea which one yet Colors: Blue and yellow. Blue for the sky and yellow for the color of the Sun Crest: Pictured below
Abey was having absolutely no luck in his attempts to get someone else's attention, probably because he was somehow sat near people he didn't really know very well at all, and they had no reason to look his way. He bit down harder on his lip and tried one last time to catch someone's eye, but... nope.
RaaahhhhHHHHHhHhhHHHH. Ugh. Okay. He'd TRY. But ONLY because he had ideas that he DIDN'T WANT TO LOSE and that might make Professor Newton like him a little more because he might seem a little better at this subject.
From his school bag, Abey got out his quill and a pot of ink, which he had managed to hardly use at all this term actually, and THAT was how good he was at avoiding things he didn't want to do. After loading up his quill with ink, Abey found a fresh piece of parchment and.....
Well...
He tried.

Concentrating as hard as he was (and you could tell he was concentrating actually because his tongue was poking out of the corner of his mouth whenever he wrote and his eyebrows were all frowny even though he wasn't angry at all) Abey had ended up pushing down very hard with his quill, making his work even moth untidy than it needed to be, because of all the smudges and ink drops all over everywhere. He had spend the entire time trying as hard as he could to sound out the sounds he was trying to make, and he knew that a lot of it was wrong because there were a lot of rules that didn't make any sense with spelling English and so all he could do was to guess actually and write what made the most sense.
Abey kept his work completely covered up so that nobody else around him could peek at it and see what a mess it was, and after setting his quill down, he put his other piece of parchment, with the drawing of the crest on it, on top of the one with all the writing, to keep it hidden. Okay. NOW he was done. Sort of. He hadn't thought of a house name, but that was enough for one day, surely.

With a few more decisions to make, Cassie began to write down what she needed to for the activity. She had animal mascot, house colors and was starting to get an idea on what the students that would have been sorted into her house. Like phoenixes, they were to be ones who were strong and determined and not the type to give up like giving into stuff like death and the like. And finally the Ravenclaw settled on a name that she remembered from her family name and astronomy lessons. McNally meant son of a hunting dog and Canis was dog in Latin.
SPOILER!!: New House
House Name: Canis
House Mascot: Phoenix
House Colors: Orange, Red and White
Characteristics looked for: Determination, follow-through, persistence
Once she had everything written down roughly the way she had worded it in her head, Cass proceeded to try her hand at a crest of sorts. Familiar with a bird in a house as she was with Ravenclaw, it wasn't too hard but trying to make it look like flames was a bit of a challenge. She could only fiddle with it so much so it wasn't going to be perfectly right, the final product a perched phoenix with one up-swept wing.

With a smile and thank you, Rosalyn accepted the assignment from Juno. It was about time to end the lesson! Looking at her watch confirmed it and she waited another few minutes before addressing the class.
"Wonderful job everyone. Class is over now, if you could all hand your assignments in to me you may leave. Have a good rest of your day!" She would need to speak to Kitty in a moment though she had a feeling as to where the girl had run off to.
OOC: Thats it, guys! Thank you all for attending. I will leave this thread open for another day to give people time to wrap up in here if they choose to.

SO. The THING was that Derf sort of had a THING with this whole house THING. Of course he was a proud Hufflepuff - it was hard not to be proud when you shared the same house as the infamous Newt Scamander, after all - but he had had various conversations with Hazel about this house THING and how upsetting it was to not be able to be with friends. Friends like Jessa, who was in Ravenclaw, and friends like Zoryn, who was in Gryffindor, and being labeled as one thing and and...well...there was just a lot of things that were a little frustrating about the whole thing. They had even discussed taking over an empty classroom by pulling their mattresses and just having a giant sleepover NO HOUSE HOUSE party.
But...for the sake of class...Derf wasn't going to mount any sort of protest about making ANOTHER box of sorts to fit people in to. In fact, the wheels in his head were already turning as to what sort of house it would be! Which, well, was mostly entirely based on his own interests and taking absolutely none of the already established houses.
First thing to pop to mind was the mascot - which really should come as NO surprise to anyone. A newt. Obviously. Partly the namesake of his hero and partly the best friend that was currently residing in his pocket. His grandma had gifted him a book on creatures...kind of an unusual sort of book really...and he had read that newt energies were the sort that liked helping others to enjoy change. There was also something about helping others look at themselves and their inner secrets...and something else about using newfound knowledge in order to grow. Really...he just liked the creature so...sure. YAY NEWTS!
As for colors...well...green was obvious because that was his favorite color. But not the deep green like Slytherin but something light and vibrant. And since the houses had sort of this metallic theme going on, sort of, he opted for copper to be the accent color. So that was all done and easy.
As for house traits...well...he scribbled down a few things while referencing his pocket dictionary to make sure that he was spelling things properly...which was what was taking him SO long to finish the assignment. So long in fact that Professor Newton had even called the class buuuuuuuuuut he was too busy being engrossed in trying to figure out how to spell eccentric...which apparently did not start with 'ex' for anyone who was interested or confused.
"DONE!" he chirped...only to look around and see that half the class had left already. Oh...awkward. Jumping to his feet and grabbing his enchanted suitcase, the first year thrust the parchment in the professor's hands with a ish grin before scampering out of the classroom.f the classroom.
SPOILER!!: assignment
House Name: Etena
House Mascot: NEWT
House Colors: copper & light green
Characteristics looked for: adaptability, duality, eccentric, impartial, morally astute, CREATURE EMPAHY

She was finishing up on her last minute tweaks to her work, both written and drawn when the professor called time. Whew! Just in time it appeared. Cassie cleaned up her work area, stashing her belongings back in her bag before standing up. She then gathered her work and walked to the professor's desk. "Here you go, Professor," the fourth year said, handing in her house project. "Thanks for the lesson." Then taking her leave, she slung her book bag over her shoulder and headed out.

Oh, it was time to go! They'd luckily finished right in time. Genuinely surprised by their luck, Liv offered a small smile to her cousin.
"I'll drop off our work..." Flipping the page of details over, the Gryffindor quickly jotted both their names down, as well as their Houses and years; basically all the information needed so that it could be graded accordingly. Finishing it off by pinning their crest to the page, Olivia toted it up towards the front. "Here, Professor."
Traveling back to grab her bag, she waited for her cousin. "What class do you have next?"

Not the house, but getting programs for the students who would like it.
"So the house would be for artistic people. Drawing, painting, acting, singing, any form of art or do you think it should be more specific?" If they started being more specific then they might need more than one house. "What do you think we should call the house?" Did he have a good name or would he like to name it after himself?
Hmm. Kane tried to think of something that sounded really fancy and artsy, but couldn't think of anything for a few moments. "No, I think any type of art should be good. Since it's so broad," he pointed out. You could really love theater but also love drawing, or maybe you only liked ONE form of art but it was still super important in your life. They should be able to be welcome in that house too!
"OH, what about how Thespian? That means artist or something, right?" he asked. Or did it only mean actor? It was a stage thing, right? Ugh, he had no idea. "Or we could just name it Westwood house," he added with a grin. He was joking but also sort of serious. Westwood DID sound super dignified, in his humble opinion.
As he spoke, he started to draw the crest by making a shield shape. HMMM. What would go on there? A paintbrush? Those mask things from the theater? A pottery wheel? "We need an animal too," he added. Did she have any ideas?
AWW NO! It was time to go already?! But he wasn't done! Deciding to just wing it, he drew a quick picture of a sea otter - because WHY NOT? - on his crest and colored it in purple and black and wrote "HOUSE WESTWOOD" on the top. He was making an executive call here. "I'll turn it in!" he told the head girl, hoping she wasn't too angry with him doing the last bits without her input, but...TIME CRUNCH.

Dangggg.
Brent had literally finished just in the nick of time. He had designed the last piece of crest and deemed it finished just as the professor was calling time. He started packing his belongings and cleaning up his area. Finally, he grabbed his assignment and slung his book back over his shoulder.
"Thanks for the great lesson, Professor," he said, and he handed her his assignment. "Have an awesome day."
