History of Magic Lesson One - The Founding of Hogwarts Even though it is a cold morning, it is not easy to notice upon stepping inside the History of Magic classroom. Professor Newton has added extra warmth by using heating charms though she wouldn't be opposed to placing more if students are still feeling cold. The seating arrangement is the same as always, and Professor Newton can be found sitting at her desk, waiting eagerly for the students to arrive and take their seats. Of course snacks are provided on her desk as usual, today's being a plate of shortbread that has been charmed to keep replenishing itself. Just because it is early December doesn't mean that Christmas cookies can't be enjoyed, and these ones are shaped like candy canes, stars, bells, and Christmas trees. Nothing like getting into the festive spirit! Lesson Progression: What do you know about Hogwarts? What do you know about the Hogwarts founders? Activity time OOC: |
Juno was surprised to see that she was one of the first to arrive but she had left a little earlier than usual...hoping to run into a certain Ravenclaw. She smiled at the thought, and then she saw the cookies which made her smile more. "Morning, Professor Newton! Thanks for the cookies!" She said with a wave grabbing a handful. She quickly found a seat and made sure there were two open chairs next to her. Giving that grey eyed seventh year a choice of where to sit. |
Okay. Listen. Abey hated History of Magic. Actually probably with something close to a burning passion, actually. For obvious reasons too - at least, obvious to anyone who knew him well. There was one bright side, at least. All of Abey's knowledge of magic and the wizarding world and everything came from what he had heard or seen from his family (and pseudo-family, but actually they were all his family too) and, even though he didn't know nearly as much as he might have done had he read his textbook, a lot of random pieces of information had managed to plant themselves into his brain; just the regular little things a kid picked up from listening to older and smarter family members talking, from time to time. The kind of stuff any wizarding kid would know and all that, but it was something. AND, because of the diversity in his family and the things they knew about and how SMART they all were, there were sometimes even little details about things that Abey knew that a lot of other people DIDN'T know. It wasn't much consolation, but Abey would take it. Though he would have been much happier were he just allowed to drop History of Magic now and not after his fifth year. That was like five MILLION years away. But here he was, present and correct, entering the classroom with the air of any kid who was being forced into the pure torture of sitting through a lesson they were simply no good at. At least there was always food. Abey went to get some today, same as always. "Good morning, Professor," he said politely to the teacher lady, because he always remembered his manners and to respect his elders and everything. The smile he gave her wasn't even all that forced either. He picked up some shortbread and looked around at the desks. "Where's the warmest place to sit? I'm actually extra froze today." It just kept getting colder in this place, though this classroom at least wasn't as bad as out in the corridor, but hearing the wind howl outside the windows just made him feel even more cold than he probably actually was. Abey was already counting down the days until he could go home to Egypt for the Christmas holidays. |
Nero enjoyed reading... Sometimes. But it was usually on a rainy or snowy day when he had nothing else to do. Otherwise, not so. Frankly speaking, he was never interested in history. He's eleven, duh? He was, however, a morning person. So, he was one of the first to arrive to History of Magic class, saw snacks served on teacher's desk and he beamed as he took one. "Good morning, professor! Thank you for the cookies," he greeted, then took a seat. His first class with a desk. Wow! He might need some time to get used to this... He was already getting used to the snack though. |
Another morning, another lesson. By now, Elle was used to heating charms being part of her getting ready habits, so she wasn’t quite as bad of as she imagined some of the younger students were as they all headed to their first lessons of the day. Even so, she still had her house scarf wrapped around her neck as she’d headed up to History of Magic, only half-hoping that Professor Newton had cocoa or tea or something hot to drink when she got there. However, as she’d entered the classroom, she wasn’t disappointed to find out that there wasn’t. She knew she’d survive. Especially since she could tell that the professor had cast charms over the classroom to warm it up like several of the others had in previous lessons. She was even able to unwind her scarf, although she kept it hanging around her neck just for safekeeping. And to keep it ready for when the lesson was over and she had to leave again. “Good morning Professor Newton!,” she said with smile, selecting a candy cane-shaped cookie from the plate with a murmur of thanks before heading off to find a seat. It didn’t seem to be too difficult seeing as she was apparently one of the first to arrive, and she settled in once she’d arrived at a desk, getting comfortable and ready for the lesson to come. |
Jacob entered the History of Magic classroom happily. He was in a good mood that morning, though he wasn't really sure why. He wasn't much of a morning person, and it was definitely too cold for his taste outside, but he was still feeling cheerful. He guessed that was better than being grumpy, so why analyze it too much? "Good morning, Professor," he greeted his teacher warmly. "And thanks!" he added as he grabbed a cookie shaped like a Christmas tree. It might technically be too early in the morning for cookies, but technicalities be darned. Christmas cookies were the best. He made his way over to his usual seat and settled in, pulling out the things he thought he would need for the class -- parchment, ink, all that sort of stuff. He looked around the room, seeing if there was anyone he knew in there, but it was all people he only recognized by sight. He made sure his things didn't encroach onto the space next to him, though, in case someone wanted to sit down. He wasn't opposed to some company. Again, good mood. |
If it was on a chocolate frog card then changes were he knew it...otherwise the Hufflepuff's understanding "How you do it, professor?" he asked, masking his suspicions with innocent curiosity and eyelash fluttering as best he could. "I fought food couldn't be made?! Gamp's-s-s Law of Elemental Transfiguration and all..." SUSPICIOUS! |

You know, for a boring lesson, sometimes Char actually kind of enjoyed History of Magic. It depended a lot on the professors though, and on what sort of activity they had to do. Activities made things way better for sure. "Its a refilling charm." Charlotte cheerfully told Derf as she came into the classroom. "Its not transfiguration, it just means that there's a supply somewhere and the plate is charmed to refill itself!" Pretty COOL really. Char helped herself and waved a piece of shortbread at the professor. "Thanks professor, and hi!" And whereeeee was she going to sit today!? |
Zelena entered the classroom, the distinct scent of baked goods wafting into her nostrils. She relished the scent of well-made cookies. When she reached Professor Newton's desk, she flashed her a smile as she picked up a star-shaped cookie and cheerily greeted her with a "Good morning, Professor. Thank you for the cookie." She quickly made her way to a vacant seat and promptly sat down, taking out the lesson's requirements which included parchment, a quill and ink. She straightened herself up awaiting the start of the lesson. |
Carlton pranced into the room in a determined way. History of Magic again. It wasn't as bad at Ancient Runes where he basically said nothing but it was almost on the same level. He didn't know a thing about history of magic, but professor Newton had assured him that he contributed in her class anyway. Which made him feel important. The castle was cold but the class room felt all warm and cozy when he stepped into it. "Good morning, professor Newton!" Carlton beamed as he entered. Then he noticed some of the other students ate something. He shone up and strutted over to the cookies. "Thank you, professor." He murmured and with great care he picked up a cookie and waved with it to Charlotte in greeting. He took a seat, in the front of the class and nommed on his star-shaped cookie while he picked up his textbook, notes and quill. Teach all the magic ways, professor Newton. He was ready. |
Truth be told History of Magic wasn't TOO terrible, but she reckoned it had much to live up to with her parents fond memories and stories of lessons with Lainey, although Rose Newton wasn't of the same eccentric nature as the Lainey from her childhood stories, the woman who was her history professor for now two years wasn't bad. Though she still didn't trust the cookies and other snacks on display, which was nothing personal. Taking a seat somewhere in the middle and near the window, Skylar gave a brief smile toward the now familiar woman. "Morning Professor! Been a rather warm winter for Scotland thus far, don't you think?" Well of course it was warmed in here with charms but even without the charms, it still felt warmer than in previous years. Either that or it was just teenage hormones. |
History of Magic. Noelle didn't care of the class. She planned on dropping it after this term. She was more into the now than the then. Not that history wasn't important.... it just wasn't important to her. But shortbread was always a good welcome. Noelle took a piece and smiled at the professor as she headed for a desk. "Good morning professor!" She exclaimed and gave a wave to Char before sitting down beside Zelena. "hi, mind if I sit here?" She asked. She didn't pull her items out of her bag until she said something. |
"Good morning, Professor!" Sinead bobbed her head politely as she made her way into the room and looked around for somewhere to sit, like always. The only seat left near the front was near Carlton, so she gave a bit of a mental shrug and made for it, eyeing the cookies thoughtfully but not taking one. Yet. Instead, she opted for arranging her possessions over the desk, with her pride-and-joy brand new Self-Inking quill poised over her parchment. Yep. Ready for another excellent lesson of note taking. History of Magic may not be the most thrilling subject, but at least it was reliable, right? |
"HI PROFESSOR." Rooney grinned at his He needed to be up close and personal for this subject. And he was sure that it was a bit warmer here. Perhaps it was the radiating warmth from the wonderful Professor. Or perhaps she was just keeping herself warmer than the rest of her students. Rooney Bronwyn did not mind. |
Mason nodded his head to the professor the moment he was near the desk and grabbed a bell shaped cookie from the plate and turned around to find a seat to sit. He popped the cookie in his mouth and the thing was gone before he sat down somewhere. Now he wished he had gotten more but he also didn't want to get back up. So instead, he opened his bag and pulled out his History of Magic textbook. He flipped the pages until he got to the bookmark and began to quietly read again. |
"Hello, Professor!" Harvey slouched in his chair and yawned, trying to over it up but suspecting that he'd rather failed. He hadn't slept nearly as much as he'd have liked to last night. Or rather, this morning. Classes began way to early, in his opinion... |

"Good day, Professor, " she said with an added wave. Turning to look over those gathered she made a beeline for Mason. He knew she was sorry, right? Of course. So as the blonde made her way over she slipped quietly into a seat beside him before offering him a smile. This could beside interesting, but for now she was going to sit quietly. |
History of Magic was probably her second favorite subject at Hogwarts, the first being Muggle Studies. In a way, the two subjects were linked kind of like how Ancient Runes and Divination were linked - Wizarding history directly impacted Muggle history and vice versa. Besides, the subject was interesting all on its own. "Good morning Professor Newton," said Kitty as she walked into the classroom and absentmindedly picked a star cookie off the tray. "Thank you for always being so kind to us," she said with a smile as she went to sit down in the back. |
So it seemed that Hogwarts professors were currently going through a bunch of trends. First it was the no desks thing - Professor Newton didn't seem that into that. Then it had been the really warm classrooms - check - and the offered food. Look, Daisy loved food. She had no problem with the food offering at all. Except for the fact that she sort of didn't trust all these random food offers. Her parents had been poisoned and turned into animals while they were at Hogwarts, okay? Walking into the classroom, Daisy walked past the desk and smiled at the woman sitting there. "Hello, Professor Newton!" She waved at the woman and picked a Christmas tree-shaped cookie. She'd take it with her and then wait for all the other students to finish eating theirs. The Slytherin sat on a desk by herself and tugged at the collar of her uniform shirt. It wouldn't be THAT much of a problem if she removed her cloak, would it? NAAAH, let's get it off. |
Whoehooo! The prospect about a warm classroom was making the second year old Slytherin’s day just perfect! Buuuuuut, the thought about a history lesson? Well… To be honest, she wasn’t excited about that… Not that she was having problems with it but… She just wasn’t interested in something what already happened and to read and learn about people who were mostly already dead… Although, she needed to confess, the whole history about the great wizarding war was interesting, especially because she, as a muggle born, did not knew about it before reading about it in books. “Hello professor” she smiled while greeting the teacher and she walked straight to the table with food. FOOOD! Again a class where she could eat something! Fantastic! |

The Ravenclaw did not smile back, instead he looked back down at his text book and continued to read. |
Another day another History of Magic Lesson and one wasn't always sure what one would find in one of those. It wasn't entirely hands on like potions and Defense against the Dark Arts, but it sure wasn't made to be boring...at least most of the time. Thank Merlin. Cassie stepped inside the classroom to the feel of warming charms and the smell of cookies. Two most welcome things with the cold of December upon them and the holidays just around the corner. "Hello Professor," she greeted the woman with a friendly smile as she stepped further into the room, scoping out who all was there and where she could sit. There was the usual faces both inside and outside of Ravenclaw house, the fourth year noticing prefects and housemates first. Not really anyone she was particularly close to. So after grabbing a couple of cookies, Cass made her way to a random seat to the left of the classroom. |
Matt had walked relatively fast to the lesson because of the cold castle and he was coming aaaalllll the way from up the towers, so it was a long walk through the cold, stony corridors. He immediately felt better when he walked into the classroom. It was so warm he was able to take his cloak off too! "Hiya, professor!" He greeted the other professor Newt - though he wouldn't call her that because that was their Head of House's nickname, not anyone else's!!!! Professor Newton it was. "Thanks for these!" He added as he walked up to get some shortbread for himself. He really appreciated when their teachers did that. They all knew the students were about to endure an hour or two of boooriiiinnngggg lessons most of the time, so He spun around on his heels and looked for a seat. None of his close friends had arrived BUT... Quote:
Was it too soon? ... Nah! The Gryffindor made his way and, without asking, plopped onto the seat next to Daisy. "Ahoy there!" |
The heady boy was figuring he might as well check out history of magic. This class wasn't too bad, the teacher was pretty chill. I mean she did help him make some decent chocolate chip cookies. He would give her props. As he entered the room, he noticed other students and he nodded. He also saw there was christmas cookies sitting near the Professor's desk. His eyes beamed and he muttered, "Don't mind if I do.." He took one of a candy cane. Then a sudden thought came to him. Woah christmas is coming. When did the holiday sneak up so fast? He was mind blown right now. He smiled at the Professor and munched on his cookie and complimented her when he swallowed the whole thing. "Thanks for the cookies. Did you make them yourself..?" He eyed her and wondered if the house elves did some assisting. "Also how are you doing Professor..?" He nodded his dismissal and walked towards his seat and began to make some fun doodles. |

He smiled at the Professor as he picked up a cookie. "Thanks Professor for the cookies! And Hello! " He said with a grin as she slid into the empty spot next to Juno.. "Hey you. " He said with a warm grin. |
