Default Headmistress's Office

The oak door opens into a circular room where nothing is out of place. The curtains are evenly drawn apart to bring in the natural lighting without there being too much light, provided by the sun or moon, pouring into the room. Scattered about are lavender candles that never seem to lower no matter how long the wick burns, which are strategically placed to avoid upsetting the portraits adorning the walls when lit at night and when the weather is cloudy. Rain or shine, the perfect amount of light fills the room throughout all hours of the day.

Looking around the office with an assertive eye, you can learn much about the woman who resides here. Books of all kinds -- thin, thick, old, and new -- fill several bookcases, their titles covering topics from hexes and curses to ancient runes and history. A number of interesting-looking artefacts that Headmistress Hawthorne found on her many Curse-Breaking escapades around the world rest in glass curio cabinets, free of any dust and heavily protected. Some of these items include, but are not limited to, the claw of a sphinx, cracked ashwinder eggs, a fossilized skeleton of a White River Monster, a metal brass Indian tea cup (former home of an Occamy), and various gems and coins. On a shelf closest to her desk rests a polished gramophone, which is known to play vinyl records of Stevie Nicks, among others, from time to time.

In the centre of the room stands a grand desk. On the desk itself are various frames containing pictures that capture the headmistress's fondest memories: her wearing a Head Girl badge on the grounds of Ilvermorny, her and several others having just made a great historical find deep within an Egyptian tomb, her holding a newborn clad in a pink blanket with a man's body purposefully cropped off, and several more. The remainder of the desk consists of neat piles of paperwork and an intricate golden hourglass, covered in runes, that will begin steadily dropping sand the moment conversation begins, signifying how much time you have left in the office.

Placed directly in front of the desk are two visitor's chairs that have blue and cranberry cushions placed on them for maximum comfort. Here is where the more serious conversations will be held, whereas the more light-hearted conversations may be moved to the the small sitting area behind the headmistress's desk where plush sofas can be found.

OOC: The gargoyle must step aside before you are able to enter the office. Those who post in this thread must either know the password to go beyond the gargoyle or be accompanied by the headmistress or a professor. Posting in the office without properly bypassing the gargoyle will result in your post being removed.

It was only when he was halfway up the stairs, that Brent started to get a little nervous. What was he even walking towards? He had failed to ask anybody if this was just a direct path to the headmistress, or if he had to do something special or know another password once he reached the top. He decided to draw his wand just on the off-chance something shifty this way came.

Finally, he reached a circular room. "Duuuuuuude," he said aloud, looking around the place. This had to be the most perfect room in the entire castle. He wasn't even sure a speck of dust stood a chance up here. Brent didn't see the headmistress at this point (was she going to like, pop out or something?), so he stepped further into the office and fought the urge to just pick up everything in sight.

He leaned in closer and studied this really cool looking ancient artifact. Was that an ashwinder egg?! ...and WHAT even did that skeleton belong to? Moving along, he leaned over and looked at...something else. "Stevie Nicks," he read aloud. Whoever that was... Brent was seriously lost in thought with all the cool things in here. He had to tell Kane!

After a few minutes, the gargoyle leaped to the side, inviting the Gryffindor to step onto the staircase that would take him up to the headmistress, who was currently sitting at her desk. The door at the top of the stairs was even open, almost as if she had been expecting him to make an appearance.
Blaise had his gaze locked on the gargoyle, waiting to see if it'd REALLY SIT THERE AND LEAVE HIM WAITING LIKE THAT. After all they'd been through together. He was practically best mates with this stone figure by now--at least that's how he'd be telling the story--so when it didn't immediately give way, the boy had to admit he was a little taken aback.

Thankfully though, it did let him through and the Gryffindor steadily made his way up the spiral staircase with his quill and notepad in tow. With any luck this would be a very brief meeting and the small amount of peace the boy had found at this place wouldn't suddenly be dislodged.

Getting to the top, it became apparent that knocking wouldn't be necessary. Talk about an open door policy. "Er..." Blaise stuck his head through the doorway, peering in cautiously. Having found the Headmistress at her desk, the rest of the boy soon followed along. "Afternoon Headmistress. I was wondering if you had a bit of time to discuss my grudgingly magical future." Which pretty much involved past arrangements the boy prayed had been passed along to her.

Just gonna...stand here and admire her face wait to be invited to sit. Manners and all that. But also, if his arrangements DID keep happening, the boy was looking at special alone sessions with her at the end of every week and he'd be the dirtiest liar in the world to say he saw any problem with that. On the contrary, this was looking real promising--except...except if he couldn't actually perform the spells required (because of nerves you know??????) and she thought she was a complete idiot.

Well...that certainly changed things.

Regina finished the section of the paper that she was reading and folded it up before placing it on a side table. She remained seated for the moment, waiting until she heard the former Ilvermorny student to enter the office. It took all of her might to not quietly roll her eyes when the familiar voice sounded a classic 'Duuuuuuude' that belonged to the one and the only Brent Westwood.

By the time she had risen from the sofa and had walked out from the sitting area from behind her desk, the headmistress noticed that it did not talk long for the American boy to start examining her treasured belongings. She stopped and rested a hand on the arm of her desk chair, simply observing Brent lean over her ashwinder eggs and then her records.

A short laugh managed to escape her mouth when he read off the name Stevie Nicks and seemed lost in thought. "She was a famous singer-songwriter who's solo career began in the 1980s. Very talented witch who was popular in both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds," she explained with a smile. There was a pause before she added, "How are you enjoying Hogwarts so far, Mr. Westwood? And how is your brother adjusting?"

Various student files were stacked on her desk. Of course she had read them before, but it was time to properly match faces with the names written on them now that school was well underway. At the moment Blaise stuck his head through the doorway, the woman had been reading up on one of the Ravenclaws. When his voice sounded, she tucked the papers away and closed the file.

"Come on in, Mr. Bellaire," Regina said, her expression non-changing as she motioned at one of the chairs in front of her desk and then waved her hand over the file. It placed itself at the top of the pile, and a different file that read Bellaire, Blaise L. scooted out from the middle of it.

While the boy got himself seated, she took a moment to review everything that he been documented on him. The details quickly flooded back into her mind, remembering that this was a rather peculiar predicament. "I would like to begin this meeting by discussing the past arrangements that have been made for you," she stated as the sand in her unique hourglass slowly started to fall. "From your own perspective, explain those arrangements, how helpful they have been, and if there have been any improvements in your academics."

If it was literally possible to jump a mile, Brent would have done so right then and there. He was totally not expecting to hear the Headmistress' voice so suddenly; although, had he thought about it, what was he expecting? Of course she'd emerge to see him. He just bet that stone gargoyle had some kind of secret scope that had shown her everything.

Still, though, she'd taken him by surprise. "Professor Hawthorne! I mean..." PERFECT. Now he'd called her by the incorrect title and already made a complete idiot of himself. He stood tall and straight and instinctively checked his uniform to make sure he looked presentable. His shirt was tucked in, and his tie was on point. He thought everything looked okay. "I mean, Headmistress Hawthorne!" He could see the house points dropping out of those hourglasses the more and more he opened his mouth. What an idiotic first impression as a Hogwarts student.

"My apologies. I'm just still in shock! I had no idea you'd be here!" he continued. He looked around her office, suddenly feeling like a bull in a china shop. He was pretty sure if he moved an inch, there'd be some ancient artifact destroyed. "Thank you for allowing me up here." He nodded at the Stevie Nicks explanation. "Sounds like a pretty cool person." He was slowly beginning to relax, and she didn't seem mad at him, which was perfect. Nobody wants to be on the bad side of the head honcho at the top.

Looking up at her with honestly in his eyes, he answered her question. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't having a good time. I'm not as bitter about the move anymore," he said. "The classes are great so far, and I really like the house I've been sorted into." He wanted to launch into the whole lack of sports thing, but he decided against that. "Kane's doing alright, too." Although, Brent kind of thought Kane would be happy anywhere his parents had moved him.

Sit. Oh right. He could sit. Right. Yes. Kid was just gonna...take this seat here and pretend to NOT be staring as much as he really was. Suffice to say it was a little difficult concentrating on her words at first but eventually his brain started piecing things together. Without really meaning to, the boy gave a firm nod, realizing only seconds later that the statement required verbal response.

Ugh. Focus Bellaire.

"The arrangement that the former Headmaster came up with was me not attending Charms but instead going through the charms on my own time and showing him what I've learned at the end of each week. So far I think it's been very effective. See, I learn better when not...practising around others. So yeah, I think they've been super helpful. Thing is, I was way behind the others in my year group, then I started skipping Charms and Transfiguration and practising on my own, been that way since First Year. Sahnoun made it official and as of last term, I'm caught up to where I should be." Pretty much spoke to how effective it was, yeah?

"I like it this way--and I don't skip other classes in case your wondering. Those Professors are very accomdating and fine with me muggling my way through the magic portions of the lesson." So....academic performance all good. Yep.

The headmistress resisted the urge to roll her eyes and laugh when Brent appeared to be taken by surprise. Should she had coughed to let him know that she was there? In all honesty, the woman didn't feel that was necessary. They were, after all, in her office. She was allowed to pop up on unsuspecting students. A smirk played at her lips at that little thought.

She rose a hand at the boy, signifying that there was no need for an apology for first calling her a professor and then needing to make the correction. It was only a handful months ago she was his Defence professor at Ilvermorny. The title change was still something that even she was getting used to. Now, had he come to her office with his shirt untucked and tie loosened, then there would have been a reason for him to apologize.

"Yes, she was quite an extraordinary witch. There are times I wish I had been alive during her era," she state nonchalantly, before motioning for the former Ilvermorny student to take a seat on one of the sofas in the seating area behind her desk. Regina saw no need to continue their casual conversation anywhere else.

Her head nodded when Brent mentioned that he was no longer bitter about his move and that he, as well as Kane, were settling into the place rather well. "I'm glad to hear that," Regina responded genuinely. "I trust that your studies in DADA are going well? I put in a good word for you to Professor Hirsch." She had not forgotten that he had been one of her best pupils in her class.

While the boy explained his perspective of the arrangements that had been made prior to her employment at the school, her eyes flicked from the boy to the file in her hands and back to the boy again. The brief mention of the former headmaster made what the rest of what the boy had to say be predictable to her. It was no surprise to her that Sahnoun had made such a compromise and that Blaise liked it that way.

"I am glad that he was able to get you caught up with your fellow peers and that your professors have been very accommodating to your unique situation," Regina told the boy, glancing through pieces of his record once more. A long pause then followed, mostly so she could think of how to carefully word her expectations of him. Without giving Blaise any eye contact, she flipped a page that displayed the grades and comments he had earned over the last four years.

The file was then closed, and the woman folder her hands and placed them on the table. "Blaise," she began softly, looking directly at him, "I understand that you have been happy not attending certain classes, but instead practising magic on your own accord and meeting with the head of the school to demonstrate your mastery. But I believe that, since you are now a fifth year and will have OWL examinations at the end of the year, certain changes need to be made."

Her eyes glanced sideways at the hourglass, just to make sure that it was still moving. She half-expected it to stop because she had a feeling that the words she was saying was going to be hard for the boy sitting across from her were hard to accept. But, seeing that it was still moving, though perhaps at a slower pace, she continued.

"From my understanding, you do not have a difficult time learning theory. The struggle is putting that theory into practice." Her gaze returned to Blaise, monitoring any change of expression he might have. "Because of that, in addition to you now being an OWL student, I am going to ask that we up the ante on these arrangements. I firmly believe that you need to be attending all of your classes to learn theory alongside your peers now that you are caught up with them. As for performing magic in front of others, I do not want to force you to do it in front of your peers if you are not comfortable doing so. However, I think it should be your responsibility to arrange a time with your professors to prove your mastery of practical magic when you are ready. They, like the Ministry examiners that will be present during your OWL session, need to be able to measure your skills if you wish to pass."

With all that said, the woman sat back in her chair. "Is that fair reasoning, Mr. Bellaire?"

When the Headmistress rose her hand, Brent seriously had no idea what to think. She was a Defense professor AND now a Headmistress. She could have a wand in that hand for all he knew! ... She didn't, though. It still didn't stop Brent from getting more alert, though. He passed a short, split-second glance at Stevie Nicks before moving to take the offered seat.

He nodded at her question. "Oh, yeah. Defense class is going well, I think," he said. "I joined the Dueling Club." He wondered if (with her background) she ever got involved in it. Then his eyes got sort of wide in disbelief, and he was left speechless for a moment. "You put in a good word for me?" HIM? So the Head Honcho...the boss of the whole school...spoke to the Defense professor about him? "Headmistress, that's amazing! Thank you!" he exclaimed. He had expectations to live up to now, but it was Defense class. He could do it!

"So the reason for my visit...," he added. "Nothing major. I just couldn't believe it. Here I was all the way across the pond, and you're here, too! My Defense professor! It was like I got to take one of the two best parts of Ilvermorny with me." That was no suck-up line either. She knew he was all about Defense class at Ilvermorny. "Anyway, congratulations on the big position!"

A Poop * k8 *

The enormous tail on the bearcat swung around as the patronus dipped into the Headmistress' office. In Paul Myers' clear-as-day voice, it said,

"Children have come out of the portal. Taking them to Hospital Wing."

And a second later, another one with,

"Department of Mysteries arrived at Portal."

And like that, the patronus, both of them, were gone.

Brent's cautious behaviour made Regina go through a number of emotions. She had noticed the split-second glance at Stevie Nicks before he actually took the seat she had offered him to sit in. At first she was concerned that something about her office was off. She was hesitant to ask if something was wrong. But, in the end, she was proud of him. He was being vigilant, which was a message that was always at the core of her Defence Against the Dark Arts lessons at Ilvermorny.

"Excellent. It is good to hear that moving across the pond hasn't affected your knack for Defense," she said with a nod of her head. "In general, being flexible and quick to adapt is essential to succeed. Plus you are in very capable hands. Professor Hirsch is quite knowledgable and passionate about the subject."

As she joined Brent in her sitting area, taking a seat across from him, the smile that had been on her face grew warmer. She was glad to hear that he had signed up for the Duelling Club and a little amused that he seemed surprised that she had put in a good word for him, and she was also quite touched by the fact that he was one of the two best parts he had taken with him from Ilvermorny. That Brent Westwood was certainly a charmer.

"You are too kind. Thank you," Regina replied, internally thinking that it was moments like these that made being an educator the best thing in the entire world. "And congratulations to you on your new journey here at Hogwarts. I expect you will be doing great things here, Mr. Westwood."

"Department of Mysteries arrived at Portal."

And like that, the patronus, both of them, were gone.

The headmistress's office had grown rather cluttered ever since the three boys had disappeared. Her books were scattered around the room, bits of parchment crumpled up and tossed over her shoulder, and the pile of letters -- undoubtedly from parents that were questioning why the Board had hired her, an American of all people, to begin with -- were starting to pile up. If only the howlers didn't open themselves upon delivery. She just had to endure a handful of them in the midst of scouring through one of her books.

Right now she was thumbing through one of her dark arts books, hoping to find something about the portal and what could be found within. This was a topic she knew absolutely nothing about, and the fact that the author's of her books had nothing to say on the matter made her worried that no one knew. There were times something was looking promising, but then it took a turn in the wrong direction. She hoped that the Department of Mysteries could provide some answers for her.

She jumped from where she sat the moment Paul's voice sounded. Regina's face turned toward the entrance of her office to scowl at the man for sneaking up on her like that, but only a silver bearcat could be seen. The woman was already out the door by the time the second patronus arrived.
