| | Flying Lesson #1: Beginners
On the appropriate day you make your way toward the grounds to the Quidditch Pitch. It is late October therefore a bit nippy, but not bad enough to keep the skies clear enough and consider this a fine day to fly. Now what could possibly await you here today? At the open field you can see Mr. McLeod donning his usual large black cloak awaiting with many brooms lined up accordingly.
--- OOC: Hey there. We've already begun, but you can still join in on the fun. Just simply post as if you've been there all along. |

"First off you just swing your leg over the broom and keep a steady grip with your dominate hand over your hand on the handle. Like so." The Instructor demonstrated for them with his trusty broom. "Now first thing we'll be doing is taking off. Once you're fully mounted you are to face in the direction of the air before kicking off the ground with a single jump into a hover." Demonstrating again, Justin floated off in the air like a single feather before descending down.
"The most difficult part will be on keeping yourself in the air long enough. So right now we will concentrate on floating for a few seconds before tapping back down onto the ground." So for some tips, "Keep your mind fully focused on staying in the air, feel your broom as if they're a close friend and trust them. A bit of imagination helps as well." Where they anxious yet? "On my whistle, give it go. Three... two.."
*TWEEET*
--- OOC: Time to take flight! Have your character attempt to take flight and stay afloat before descending down after. Next post will be tomorrow. =) -------
Eventually, Jonas managed to summon his broom and it got in his hand. Really, he just picked it up. Seriously, what's with wizards and witch's way of being lazy? IT's right there, just pick it up. But anyways, on with the next steps of the lesson. Swinging his left leg over, he imagined himself hovering above the ground. He started to go up. Okay, this was easy. How many lessons has it been though? Like three this year? Something like that. It felt like more.

Take... Take flight?!
Carlton tried his best to keep up with the instructions but before he knew it, Mr. McLeod's whistle had sounded.
Help. "Okidoki." He could do this. A little hover. No biggie. He swung one leg over the broom and placed his hands the way he thought was right. Now, the kick off. He exhaled once before kicking off. It was just a little jump. Nothing exciting happened. He jumped again. And nothing.
Carlton bounced on the spot, kicking off from the ground over and over without getting anywhere near a hover. He'd been so proud that he'd gotten his broom to obey him before but now he was stuck again. Bounce, bounce, bounce. Carlton bounced a little to the right and a little to the left but never reached a hover.
He decided on a new tactic. He'd outsmart the broom. Carlton placed the broom on the ground again and walked in a wide circle around it before quickly standing up next to it. If he moved fast, the broom wouldn't know what hit it. "Up!" It hesitantly hovered up to his hand. "Boom." One leg swinging over. "Boom. Boom." Both hands firmly in place. "And... BOOM!" Lift off!
And this time he actually left the ground! After about 3465763725 tries, give or take another thousand tries. He was defeating gravity! "Oh neat!" His legs dangled in the air and he felt a tingle in his toes. Wiggling his feet he looked up into the sky. This was beyond awesome. He looked down again... He was high up. Was he supposed to hover this high up?
Carlton gripped his broom harder. He was slowly but steadily rising further up in the air. "Uhm, Professor..." He was confused and too scared to actually do anything productive to get it to stop. "How do I descend..?" Now this wasn't a hover anymore. He squealed. He was officially done with the 'taking flight' of the lesson. He wanted to touch solid ground again, he wanted to return DOWN.
Maybe someone could just grab his shoes and drag him back down to the ground? That would be helpful and stuff. "Help." He squealed.

Simon looked up at the sky, okay so now they had to take flight, on this little broom, seriously where were the seatbelt and the steering wheel that you were supposed to have on your broom.
"Professor, can I have a proper broom, you know one with a seatbelt on it?" Yeah he didn't want to fall off, after all if he fell it was going to be from a height taller than the tallest building right and that was something he didn't want to happen.
"There is one right?" Simon eye bulged into the back of his head as he stood standing there.

Watching some attempt was a fun show. Justin decided to keep himself mounted just incase as he casually sat on the barely levitated broom. Made it easier to see things. "Good take off Miss Ava." A bit rough on the landing though. Another student however, whoa. "Excellent Sinead. Great landing, take 5 points for that display." An excellent example to follow. Quote:

Looks like a limit on the height was needed for this one as Justin took out his wand to aim at the boy preventing him from flying any higher with a hearty grin. "Well done on the take off Carlton! Now just take some deep breaths and remember. Keep that firm grip on the handle before gently guiding it downward and concentrate on descending slowly." For safety reasons, of course. Good thing he remembered the place cushion charms all over the ground here. Quote:

Justin merely blinked at him before answering, "You have the right broom Master Simon. They all have a cushion charm attached to sit on comfortably and securely." Simple as that."So long as you don't let go of the handle you won't have to worry about falling. Give it a try." Sides he was ready to rescue anyone if they needed it.

| astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf Grinning at Zoryn, who had found proper success now with her broom now, the first year's attention was eagerly turned to the groundskeeper who WAS FINALLY GOING TO LET THEM FLY! LSDJFSDKJFDKLFS.
Derf was confident, perhaps a little TOO confident if one was being honest here, and was admittedly disappointed that house teams were still not a THING at Hogwarts. He had heard stories from Alice and his mum about quidditch at Hogwarts - exclusively Gryffindor and Ravenclaw retellings - and he had been read various picture books when he was waaaaaaaaay younger about various great players. His favorite though had been of Harry Potter's first ever quidditch match at Hogwarts. What 11-year-old didn't want to dream big like that, you know? He could literally see himself now...
...about five minutes later the blonde realized he had been daydreaming again and lost track of time. RIGHT! To hover and touch back down. HE COULD DO THIS.
Mounting his school broom, Derf gripped the handle and wiggled himself into a more comfortable position. The last time he had flown solo had been GREAT. Dad had taken him out to a field nearby and conjured cloud hoops for him to practice weaving in and out of. They had even practiced catching smallISH objects that dad had lobbed all over the place for him to try and chase down. Derf didn't blame the wind for what had happened next - although it was totally to blame - and mum was always saying that a broken bone now and then built character.
Bending deeeeeeeeeeeeeply at the knees, the first year JUMPED up as high as his skinny legs could manage with the most ridiculous grin plastered across his face and eyes turned upwards towards the blue sky. Up there...THAT was where he was going. Up up up uuuuuuuuuuuuup...
.......yeah...up he went indeed. All thoughts of coming back DOWN gone from his mind but very much in control of his broom.
He was high enough now that if he were to swing his legs just a little bit more, his foot would connect with the groundskeeper's face...right on the bull's eye. Toe to nose.

After enough time had passed, it appeared to Justin that enough had managed to get the basics and more. Very nice indeed before he blew the whistle, "Excellent everyone now it is time to descend down. I'm proud of you all for giving your best today, now that's all the time we have for today." Yep, the show was over. "Class is dismissed, you can just leave the brooms here for me to collect on your way off."
--- OOC: Thanks for coming all, I'll leave the thread a few more hours for those wanting to depart. =) |

House-points?
Was anyone watching?! She just earned HOUSE POINTS. In FLYING, no less. This was one to go down in the history books.
With that achievement under her belt, she was more than happy to leave the lesson there. She didn't want to lose face and show herself up by trying anything more advanced; she could leave that for their next lesson. She lay the broom carefully on the ground beside her and gave an unusually broad smile at Mr. McLeod on her way out. If he kept this up in the lessons, they could get their house on the way to winning the Cup in no time at all.
"Thank you, sir- good afternoon!"
