Oooh. They got to go in the lake. Or at least they did in a bit! That was so cool. Hattie beamed, taking her shoes and socks off. She wanted to do that, since she figured that her hands would get dirty again. So she didn't want that to happen. She wiggled her toes a little, glad that she had at least painted her toe nails! They were a nice golden colour, to match her house. But now to get on with the task. The carefully picked up three stones, one circular, one triangular, and one square.

The girl smiled, heading to the side of the lake, and she carefully washed her hands. This was so that she could be sure that the stones were clean when she looked at them. Now Hattie realized that she could make sure they were clean using the charm, but first she wanted to wash her first stone by hand. She looked carefully, making sure that there was no dirt on the circular stone, before dunking it in the lake water, and making sure it was clean. "Perfect" She murmured, with a smile, before she moved onto the other two stones, just using the scouring charm to clean them this time.

So stepping into the water didn't sound too appealing considering the creatures that lurked in the lake and the possible spots where murkiness made it impossible to see the bottom. She really needed to find an entourage like Kitty had because once she did, she could boss them to do the washing and wading and divining for her. It'd take ages and ages and ages to put a competent group together, though. SIGH. She supposed that meant she'd need to do this herself.

Starting with removal of socks and shoes and following it up by rolling of trousers and sleeves, Junia kept herself busy. Once that was handled, she eyed the rocks. One square, one triangle, and one circle. Hm. The brunette supposed the more accurate the shape was, the better, so it took her quite a few minutes to decide on three stones. Stones that felt like they should be hers, you know? Finally, though, she had her selections and took them down to the water's edge to wash them off. Her hands, too.

Goblinfrog 01-10-2017 12:35 AM

Giving an example for first years on Scourgify

Her hands were already clean, so there wasn't any need to wash them in water. That left the rocks, which were dirty here and there. Normally she would have preferred to clean the rocks with water. She usually preferred the Muggle way of doing things (except for healing and easy makeup) but she thought it was her obligation as a prefect to help younger students if they wanted to use Scourgify. Kitty raised her wand so that all first years nearby could see her and spoke loudly. "Okay, I'm going to use Scourgify. You just point your wand at the rocks like this." She demonstrated the correct way of holding the wand. "And then the correct incantation is 'Scourgify.' Like this. Scourgify!" The particles of dirt and mud vanished as soon as she uttered the spell. Smiling in a self-pleased way, she held up the stones for them to see.

SarcasticStrawberry 01-10-2017 02:45 AM

Well these were going, she sat on the ground and took her shoes and socks. Yep those were the first thing to go. She stood up rolled up her pants legs, and her sleeves. Her feet needed freedom! She dashed over to the lake and splashed in.

Weeee.

She took her wand, no she was going to do this by hand, that was much more fun. She washed her hands off in lake, There was done. Going back on lands she went to make her stone selections. Round, square and triangle shaped ones. After she had her stones picked out she went back into the lake and washed them off completely until they were squeaky clean, and so was her hands... again.

Now all she had to do was get them dried off. There was a spell for that.

Lissy Longbottom 01-10-2017 03:01 AM

Scourying charm? OH WAIT. She meant the cleaning spell...thing. He didn't realize that was the proper name for it. Thankfully, Kane was a fan of anything that made chores easier, so he'd learned it fairly early on during his first year. Smiling to himself at how AHEAD he was just from that, he walked up to the stone piles and started to examine them. HMMMM...that round one looked good. As good as any other round one...he picked it up off the pile and then muttered "Scourgify!" as he moved his wand over it. It didn't look dirty, but now it definitely WASN'T.

Next, a triangular one...he was a bit more particular with this one. He decided to go with one with more rounded edges...because why not? "Scourgify!" he said confidently, waving his wand and performing the spell again. Finally, a square rock - this one was pretty easy. The one Kane picked up looked almost TOO perfect to be true! Like it was a piece of kitchen tile or something. "Scourgify!" he muttered for the final time, cleaning off his square rock and then adding them to his pile with the other two.

He then bent down and rolled up his pant legs, taking off his shoes and socks as well. Thank goodness he wasn't shy about his feet! He then walked over to the lake and washed his hands off in it, even though he knew he could charm his hands clean, he just felt like they'd be CLEANER in the lake water. Which he knew made NO sense, but whatever.

Olivia jotted down the factors that could possibly affect water divination. Clarity was one of them. She smiled and continued writing in her notebook before returning to pay attention to the lesson. Alright. Choose three different shaped rocks, wash, and dry them. Okay, she could do that enough. One square, one circular, and one triangular! Perfect. All three. She eyed her wand and debated whether or not to perform the scourgify charm for a moment. She decided to wash it the good old fashioned muggle way. Slipping out of her shoes and socks, Olivia rolled up the bottom of her trousers and sleeves. Then she headed towards the water. One toe at a time, right?

Ohhh... That was cold. She felt the hairs on her legs stand up and a shiver run down her spine. Biting her lip, she continued to inch her way a little more into the water. When the water surrounded her ankles, she bent over and began washing each of the stones. Once they were scrubbed and free of dirt, she glanced down at them. Hmm... She'd have to find a way to make sure that they were bone dry. Perhaps a Hot Air Charm would work?

Pulling out her wand, she performed said charm with a complicated flick. All nice and dry. Right, stones and hands were clean. What next?

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum.

Hold up.

Zoryn’s answer was NOT on the blackboard. And Professor Vance said ALL THE FACTORS they brought up can affect the accuracy of water reading. Not SOME of the factors EXCEPT FOR ZORYN SPINNET’S answer. And the first year felt very left out. ”Professor, I think you forgot my answer on the board,” she raised her hand and nodded loads. ‘Cause words were a big part of reading and how were you supposed to read the water without the words so if anything her answer was the MOST important of them all.

As for the rest of the stuff, Zoryn thought it all sounded pretty lame. So she unenthusiastically kicked off her shoes and peeled off her socks. The first year then picked up the three different stones (only somewhat paying attention to the shapes) held them one arm, grabbing Derf’s arm with her other free hand and tugging towards the lake.

Professor said they had to wash stuff in the lake. Which meant they could probably try to find the mermaids while they did it. See, strategy. Zoryn was BRILLIANT.

Steelsheen 01-10-2017 05:16 AM

Them Hydromancy gig.... kinda complicated wasnt it? Or at least seems more complicated than the fun of skipping stones.

At the Professor's prompt, the Curly Top folded up his pants and took off his shoes and socks. Man he misses his home where he could just leap onto one of the boats along the shore and just much about the lake. He then picked up the stones as instructed, a circular one-- perfect for stone skipping-- a squarish one and a triangle one. Aaaaand time to clean? Aww yea.

He padded onto the lake shore to do some initial clean up of his stones there, plus this was kinda like playing in the water, which is funnnnn. When he thought its been sufficiently cleaned, he padded back to his spot and ran the stones under a wave of scourgify spells. And then the drying charm.

The one good thing about being a messy Gryffindor? You'll end up mastering the cleaning spells, whether you like to or not.

Anna Banana 01-10-2017 05:29 AM

Brent hated to admit as much, but this Divination lesson was actually pretty interesting. He still didn't think it'd tell too much about his future, or at least be accurate about it. The lesson seemed pretty cool, though. He could maybe handle this. Grinning to himself he produced his wand and began to clean his hands until he was sure they were free of dirt. Inspecting them, he noted they were also dry and therefore good to go.

Okay, cool. Let's get this done!

He inspected the piles of stones in front of him, looking for one that seemed to just jump out at him. He finally found a circular one he liked and claimed it for himself. Pointing his wand at the stone, he gave a strong, "Scourgify!" then moved his wand in an S-like movement. The stone hadn't really seemed dirty to start with, but even if it had been before, it wasn't now. He had his stone looking good!

He then went back to inspecting the piles of stone and chose a triangular-shaped one that looked equally as awesome. It, too, good a Brent-approved clean. "Scourgify!" he exclaimed, moving his wand around. Pretty soon, he also had a square stone claimed, as well. It had a bit of dirt particles on it, but he had this! "Scourgify!" he said, cleaning the last of his stones.

He finished the activity by rolling up the sleeves of his trousers and taking off his shoes and socks. Duuuude. He looked like a dork.

DH Vixen 01-10-2017 08:12 AM

Zara continued to jot everything down as she heard it. Smiling and nodding as she listened. Maybe she was actually starting to pick up something and her first Divination lesson wouldn’t be a disaster as she feared. She didn’t completely think she would be good at it or understand it fully, but she was looking forward to trying at least.

Finishing up jotting down all she could, she quickly and gently placed her notebook down. Watching those around her, she waited back a moment before choosing her stones. There didn't seem to be a rush to picking her stones. Divination took time and she didn't think it was meant to be rushed so she would take her time. Listening to those around her, she heard the voice of one on the older students and turned her attention to her. The voice was familiar and she realised it was one of her house’s prefects. Zara hadn’t been formally introduced to her, but she listened closely and watched with wonder. She was going to just wash her stones once she picked them with the lake water, but now she really wanted to try the scouring charm!

Kneeling down to the pile of stones, she looked at them all. She felt there needed to be some kind of reasoning to her choices, so she took her time examining the pile. Picking up one circular stone, she rolled it in her hand and shook her head. It didn’t feel right to her and something inside told her it wasn’t the right one. Picking up another smaller square one, she smiled. This one felt right and she set it aside as she picked up another rock. Rolling the triangular stone in her palm, she admired the sides of it before setting it with her chosen square stone. Looking at the remaining stones in thought, she reached for a circular stone just a bit smaller than the triangular stone and brought it up to examine it. It was very dirty but she had a good feeling about it. Adding it to her other stones, she nodded to herself and returned her spot.

Setting the stones before her, she reached for her wand and pointed it at the square stone. "Scourgify," she cast as moved her wand in the s-motion. Seeing all the dirt vanished off her first stone made her smile. Picking it up she set it atop her notebook and turned back to her remaining stones. Moving the circular stone in front of her she once again pointed her wand and cast in the s-motion. "Scourgify!" Leaning in, she picked up the stone and raised it up to her eyes. It was clean of all the dirt from before and she grinned brightly as she placed it with her square stone. Looking at her last stone, she raised her wand and cast once again pointing her wand and moving it in the s-motion at the triangular stone. "Scourgify!" Picking up the stone, she placed it with her other stones and glanced down at her hands. They weren’t as clean as she would like, so she needed to clean them for sure.

Returning her wand to it’s rightful place, she headed to wash her hands with the lake water. She had cast the scouring charm well enough on her stones, but she questioned how well she could cast on her own hands. Carefully, she washed her hands and returned to her stones and things. Pulling out a handkerchief, she began to dry her hands as thoroughly as she could. Raising her hands up she examined them closely before returning her handkerchief to her bag.

Sitting back, she carefully rolled up her trousers being mindful of not getting her hands dirty again. Once she had both sides rolled up nice and neatly, she carefully toed her shoes and socks off and nudged them over to her bag. Finally, she began to roll up her sleeves as well. She realized she probably should have done that first, but everything still managed to work out.

SilverTiger 01-10-2017 08:16 AM

Her quietness during the discussion hadn’t been due to Elle not having answers. Granted, she’d never considered Divination one of her strong suits, but she could have answered if she’d wanted. If she’d had an answer that no one else had already said. However, in this case that wasn’t true, so instead she’d just taken notes quietly. Water divination wasn’t exactly surprising, although she still wondered what exactly the stones were for. The earlier idea that they were skipping them didn’t seem to be happening. She doubted they’d need to clean the stones if all they were doing was skipping them.

They’d been given an activity though, which caused her to set her notes down, carefully weighing them down with one of her shoes since those had to come off anyhow. At least it could be used to make sure her notes didn’t blow away, if a breeze came through. She set her other shoe down next to the other before slipping her socks into her bag and rolling her jeans legs up a few inches. Once that was done, she shifted until she could look at the pile of stones nearby closer, looking until she found three that somewhat matched Professor Vance’s descriptions. One round, one square, and another vaguely triangular in shape.

Setting them down near her shoes, she took her wand out and Scourgified her hands once, before picking up one rock and Scourgifying it as well before laying it on her lap so it wouldn’t get dusty again. Afterward, she repeated that twice for the other two stones, before Scourgifying her hands again just to be safe. This was going to be slightly more difficult outside, but she was determined to keep everything clean.

sweetpinkpixie 01-10-2017 08:51 AM

Truth of the matter was, Derf was too disappointed to be paying attention to much of anything. Although, if he was being honest which he almost always was, he would have had a REALLY hard time paying attention to everything Professor Vance was saying anyway. So, really, the outcome was essentially the same. Just this way his toes ended up much more sandy as he dejectedly poked them around in the sand before him.

Poke poke diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig poke poke

And he had completely missed the older Ravenclaw girl's demonstration due to a BROKEN HEART. AND IT WAS ALL THE PROFESSOR'S FAULT.

SHE COULD TAKE BACK HIS TWO POINTS IF IT MEANT THEY COU---

And then there was a certain Gryffindor tugging on his arm....and it really wasn't until that moment he actually came out of his mopey thoughts - sort of - and yelped pathetically with surprise like a crup.

"Whaaaaaa?" he gaped, looking from her to the other students and back at the professor because HE HAD MISSED EVERYTHING apparently. Rocks? People were holding rocks...why? Three? HE NEEDED TO GRAB THOSE, RIGHT?! His eyes darted to the sand - because apparently this professor liked writing things in unconventional places - only to see that there were NO instructions there at all and only a long list of reasons on the board.

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH.

But he DID see that his friend had three stones, so THAT he could handle, which was why he quickly slipped out of her grip and haphazardly took those from the pile before slipping his arm back in hers for her to keep dragging him to the lake...which he immediately made sure he stepped into when they got close enough.

EEEEEEEEEEEE the water was cold! But...now what?

The first year looked around with his bright blue eyes to try and figure THAT out so he did not look completely clueless in front of Zoryn. Washing...they were washing...OKAY...he got that much based on his keen sense of observation as well.

Kneeling down, Derf began washing his rocks with his hands and used his thumb to scrub the spots where the dirt was being especially pesky.

"Psssssssssst," he whispered to Zoryn. "Fere are some neat skipping stones in the water." He even nodded his head towards some between them that were being gently lapped by the lake's waves.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand one rock cleaned...so into his pocket it went and on to the next one.

OOC: No individual replies this time. I'm so sorry. I know you all love them and I like writing them for each and everyone of you, but after a long day of work i was too mentally drained and thought it better to focus on moving on and giving you all a mini practical task to perform. I will move on tomorrow (tuesday) at approximatley 8pm GMT+1 and will start the main practical activity.

Do what Laurel said: Pick 3 stones (one circular, one triangular, one square) and clean them and your hands from any dirt with lake water or the scouring charm and also make sure they are dry. Roll up trouser legs and kick off shoes and socks.

Charlotte had gotten QUITE distracted by the water, the stones, and generally being outside, so she'd lost track of the whole being in class thing and hadn't spoken up for any questions. It was too nice to be doing any real and actual work! But picking stones she could do. Charlotte made an ooooooh noise and eagerly picked three stones. That one was.... BASICALLY a circle. IT WOULD DO. And that one was kind of squaare! And a nice pyramid-y triangle. Three stones for her right theeere.

As for cleaning them... well it would be way more fun to splash in the lake, so Charlotte kicked off her shoes and since she had shorts on, rather than trousers, she was ready to go.

TIME TO WASH HER STONES! And her hands! And probably get her feet wet and then get distracted again lets be honest!

Sonea 01-10-2017 09:35 AM

Barley able to suppress a moan after hearing the task she needed to do she closed her eyes for a moment. She was going to fail for this lesson, she was sure of it! How was she supposed to do such a thing as a water reading? She was good in making things up so… Maybe she could just… use her imagination during this lesson? Hmm… Again sighing out loud she picked the tree stones she needed and placed them before her on the ground. Pulling out her wand she pointed it at the stones and muttered; “Skur-ji-fy” and quick she made a S shaped movement to complete the spell. Satisfied she saw that the spell had worked and quick she put her wand back in her pocket in a desperate attempt to NOT get the attention of a first year who wanted her help with the spell. The professor had said that the students who were able to use the spell could help those who couldn’t but… Well… She didn’t wanted to so she wasn’t going to do it!

Looking even more annoyed than she had been while entering the classroom she checked if her hands were clean and when she was satisfied she started to roll up her sleeves and trousers… But, she HATED it! Can I fake sickness so that I can skip this lesson? Wondered the second year and she quick shot a look at the professor and looked thoughtful. Maybe I can do as if I’m fainting because of exhaustion she thought but then she shook her head. That would be too obvious, everyone knew that she didn’t wanted to be here…

Mell 01-10-2017 10:15 AM

Well her uncle Oliver would have to at least be a little proud of her since she had managed to get a couple of questions right. Trixie managed to make a few points on her parchment before dropping her quill in search of the three stones that the Professor had instructed them to find.

She went through the pile and picked out a round stone, one that looked fairly square in shape and a triangular one. Trixie grinned over at Jacob before standing and heading down to the water. She could probably do the cleaning spell if she really tried but it would probably be quicker and a lot more fun to just wash them in the water.

It took her a good fifteen minutes to get all the stones scrubbed clean along with her hands now all she had to do was dry them.

TeafortheSoul 01-10-2017 11:48 AM

After giving her stones a good wash in the lake water (which also involved paddling around a bit), Char returned to the shore and got her wand out. This she used to dry the stones off with a hot air charm. And her hands too of course. BONE dry, the professor had said. Charlotte figured that drying it without her wand wouldn't be BONE enough. But it looked good now. All three of them looked super dry and.... and she was bored again now.

........ maaaybbe she could paddle more? Char edged closer to the water.

Oliviaaa <3 and Slate

Ashley saw the boy shift seats next to her. She gave him an encouraging smile before turning her focus to the Professor. She listened intently as she jotted down whatever the professor said, including the list on the black board. All the factors had something to contribute to spoiling the reading. And they might all happen. TOGETHER. Great.. and they were going to do this water divining soon.

Hope we don't have to deal with every one of them.

Did she mention water creatures?

CREATURES???

Ashley shifted from her seat and leaned towards the pile of rocks, her mind totally on the said creatures. What would they be? Would they bite? She shuddered a bit. Just a teeny bit.

She looked through the pile, trying to find the rocks. The circular one was easy to find. She picked one and placed it on her table. She found the triangular and square ones a a few seconds later.

She watched as Olivia went to the lake. Ashley turned towards Slate. "Come let's wash them" Unless he knew that Scourgy-whatever charm the lady had mentioned.

Ashley stood and walked towards the lake, turning around to see if Slate followed suit. The boy seemed a bit off-put. Wonder what's bothering him.

She dipped one stone at a time into the lake and scrubbed the dirt off them carefully. Professor had said super clean. Super clean it shall be. After washing them individually, she took them collectively and gave a final dip to remove the residue dirt, if any.

She brought them back to her table and placed them gingerly on the surface. Ashley watched with awe as Olivia brought out her wand and did something. What was she pulling at? And the stones looked dry.

"How did you do that?" she asked. "Can you teach me?"

Daydreamer11 01-10-2017 02:51 PM

Janelle continued to take notes and paid extra attention when the professor began to explain their first activity. She smiled when she realized that they would in fact, be wading into the lake. But first things first. She had work to do before the fun part could begin.

Getting up slowly, Janelle walked over to the rocks and began her selection process. She would need three and they had to be the right ones. So which ones were the right ones? Janelle wasn't exactly sure, but she figured she'd know them when she saw them. After a few moments, she found a nice smooth, circular stone. Running her fingers along the surface, she knew it was the right one. Finding a triangular stone was surprisingly easy. The square one, however, was another story. This one took Janelle quite a bit longer to find. At last, she found the sort of square stone and hoped that it would be good enough for the task. With Divination you never knew. If something was off just a bit, you were doomed.

Three stones gathered, Janelle took out her wand. "Scourgify", she said, cleaning the stones one by one. When she was finished, she used the drying charm to clear all traces of water from the stones. Next, Janelle took off her shoes and socks and rolled her pants up to just below the knee. Finally, she repeated the Scourgify charm and cleaned her hands. Let the wading begin. In the meantime, Janelle looked around to see if any of the younger students needed help.

Tim did as the professor said, but not after taking down all the notes she could about hydromancy. Once she set her pen and notebook down, Tim got up and carefully grabbed three stones. A triangle-shaped, a circular one, and a square one. The blonde then carefully walked near the bank of the lake and started washing them off. Sure a charm would've been easier but what's wrong with getting your hands a little dirty? Afte the stone were all nice and clean, Tim casted a drying charm on them and placed them on top of her bag. Doing what the professor asked next, she took off her shoes and socks. But rolling her pants up would be a bit of a challenge. Tim did the best she could with rolling her pants and sat back on her spot. Though she really wouldn't mind if they got wet at all.

klexos24 01-10-2017 03:35 PM

Charlie was pleased to see that she was still in the ballpark with her answers and made sure to take note of the factors and all other information given.

SPOILER!!: Charlie's parchment

Biggest factors that can affect the accuracy of a water reading: temperature, weather, tides, amount of water, murky or clear water, creature disturbances also
  • Germanic wise women practiced hydromancy & specialized in river water interpretation (studied course, colour, & whirls)
  • Another popular technique: filling a bowl w/ water, suspending a chained ring or key over it & swinging the chain to hit the sides of the bowl. The ripples caused would be interpreted.

She had figured the stones of the pile would be used in the reason in some way, shape, or form, but the need for specific shapes is what perplexed her. What would a triangular stone do that a circular stone couldn't? Most stones weren't truly any specific shape, anyway. It was her nature to continue on anyhow, and she did just that- after waiting for the professor to finish talking, of course.

Once Professor Vance had finished her spiel, Charlie took to removing her shoes and socks, balling up the socks and putting them into one of the shoes. She sat the shoes at the corner of her mat, then moving to roll her jeans up to mid-calf. It would be a shame for them to get dirty! She then crawled over to pick out the stones from the pile. It took her about 3 minutes to find a triangular, circular, and square-shaped stone, as lots of the stones seemed to skew towards circular. She cradled the stones in her hands and walked towards the edge of the lake, setting them there and plopping down herself. One by one, she ran the stones through the water, making sure to get all dirt and other particles off of them. She kept them in her hands so as not to get them dirty again, and she walked back to her mat. The stones were still wet, so now she had to figure out how to dry them. Charlie fortunately picked up on some of the older students explaining how to do the scouring charm, and she decided to attempt it.

Setting the stones down in a group on the mat, she pulled out her wand and made her first attempt. "Scourgify!" She went, her wand pointed at the stones. Nothing happened, and she frowned, resolving to take another go at it. "Scourgify!" she repeated, a little more forceful that time around. She was excited to see three perfectly dry stones as that meant she'd actually succeeded in completing a spell! Wow.

Charlie folded her hands in her lap and waited for further instructions.

DuckyLinJi 01-10-2017 04:12 PM

All the information about Hydromancy went in one ear and out of the other. And it wasn't until the professor instructed them with the first task thay Mason sat a bit more upright.

He leaned forward to reach for the three rocks he needed and checked them. He thought they were pretty clean for a rock but he still wanted to play safe and took out his wand. Of course he already knew the spell that Kitty was demonstrating so he paid no attention to her. Instead, he focused on trying the spell nonverbally.

"Scourgify" .....nothing...of course not.

He tried 3 more times but failed each time "Scourgify" he muttered out loud and did the same tasks to the other stones. When he was satisfied he checked his hands and was pleased that they were clean and dry enough.

Wait, they were going in to the water? Uh okay? The sixteen year old rolled up the sleeves of his uniform and then pulled off his shoes and socks.

Then he stood up to roll up his pants when a tingling and kind of painful sensation went through his feet. He winced as the blood went back in to his sleepy feet and stood quite still, not daring to move for a couple of seconds until he was sure that the sensation was gone and he proceeded with rolling his pants up to his knees.

Bazinga 01-10-2017 04:28 PM

Well this was going to be a bit interesting, wasn't it? She listened to the discussion and took down notes. Her eyes shifted around for some of the students to see their reactions about what was going on. The instructions seemed clear enough and soon Natalia was standing to get her stones.

She looked around in case a first year did need any help, but it seemed that Kitty was doing a demonstration. Good less the seventh year had to do. Grabbing the three stones, one of each, she went back to her seat. With her wand out she cleaned off her stones and then her hands, because the dirt was not good for someone who played with their hair as much as Nat did.

Callie 01-10-2017 04:58 PM

Hadley Denaker was a very perceptive person. She noticed a lot of things. The way the light glittered off the lake's surface. The smell of summer that still hung lazily in the air. How good Ace's hair looked today. And she totally noticed the fact the stones came in different shapes. Yep. Completely noticed that, she did. You can't prove otherwise.

She scooped up a handful of stones, extracted one of each shape and put the rest back into the pile. Then she rolled up her sleeves and headed down to the water's edge. Despite being summer, the water of the lake was ice cold...either that or her month spent back in California weakened what little resistance to the cold she'd managed to develop over the years. Hads hurried to scrub the stones clean as the tips of her fingers started going numb. Was it possible to get frostbite in summer? Did the new healer know how to magically reverse frostbite?

....

You know what? The stones were clean enough. Hadley carried them back to where she was sitting and pulled out her wand. A hot air charm quickly dried her stones, and conveniently thawed her fingers too.

Okay, fine. The lake wasn't that cold, but it was cold.

So all the history stuff behind hydromancy Skylar found rather boring, BUT she would try to absorb all the information because it could be on a future exam. Or she'd just cram later. Probably the latter. The Professor didn't need to tell Sky twice though when she started talking about the practical aspects of the lessons. Even if she was doubtful of divining techniques, the brunette found herself intrigued by the fact that they were going to be wading in lake water despite the fact that there was murkiness in there

Three stones. Three different stones. She'd need to clean her hands, but she reckoned she should probably clean them before AND after the other tasks she was meant to do, because one couldn't be too careful. Casting aguamenti, she rinsed her hands off under the stream of water. She then proceeded to next pull off her shoes and socks and rolled up her trousers the rest of the way to her knees they were already cuffed at her ankles.

After spending a good five minutes deliberating stones and selecting ones that seemed already quite clean, she muttered "Scorgify" to clean them even more of dirt and particles. And then cast a hot-air charm to dry them. She proceeded to do the same on cleaning and drying her hands one more time. Okay, she was all cleaned up and wondering what next if they weren't going to be skipping stones as Tenacius suggested and she had previously thought similarly ....

When Laurel deemed that the majority of the students were done with the tasking of cleaning and drying both themselves and stones up she took a moment to go around among them and inspect their hands and stones. When she was satisfied she motioned the students to form a circle around her as she conjured up some cauldrons which she placed at her feet.

Letting her blue-eyed glance run over the faces she said excitedly "Let's get practical and do a hydromatic reading everyone! This will be fun! There are two ways to do the reading and you need to decide which one you want to do. Either you collect lake water in one of the provided cauldrons at my feet and drop your stones into it, or you drop the stones straight into the lake. Remember though if you choose to use a cauldron that it will affect the outcome of your reading."

"For the most accurate reading I suggest that you all, if you haven't already; roll up your trouser legs, kick of your shoes off and remove your socks and wade/paddle a little way out into the lake shallows. Be careful to not go out too far though or you might get a visit from a disturbed giant squid." Pondering she added as a second thought. "Cast a heating charm on your feet if you get cold easily." Laurel didn't want to give River frozen patients if she could avoid it.

"To perform the reading you drop the round stone first, then the triangle stone and lastly the square stone. Leave at least a 30 second interval between stone drops and study the shapes, forms and lines that the ripples make on the lake surface carefully. Try to be analytic, look past the physical object and try to interpret what the shapes, lines or forms mean for each everyone of you. You can do it solo or with a peer depending on how you feel is best.

Also if you wade out into the water it might be hard to write down your recordings so concentrate hard on remembering what you see so you can write it down when you've waded back out of the water. For your interpretations of the forms, shapes and lines then use your textbooks on page 30 for help since tea leaf symbols are as we learned earlier in the lesson very similar to hydromancy.

I think that's everything so get going, spread out into the lake and have fun! If you have any questions i'll be walking around."
Laurel finished off.

OOC: The main activity has been set. Drop your three stones (round, triangular and square) at 30 sec intervals and interpret the shapes, forms and lines that the ripples form on the lake surface, or in your cauldron depending on your preference and use the link i provided above for symbols help with what your students see in the water ripples. You can pair up for the activity if you want or go solo, it's up to you all.

No post minimum, post as many or few posts you want. I only ask that you perform the full reading and interpretation to be able to get full activity points.

You will have till friday night at around 7pm GMT+1 to complete the activity. If you have any questions for professor Vance IC then say so in your post titles and i'll answer.

Be creative and most of all have fun with this!

Mason reached out for his school bag that was placed next to the straw mat he was sitting on and pulled a couple of books out until he got the Divination textbook. He then placed the rest back in the bag and flipped the pages until he got to the right chapter.

So...they had two options. Staying dry and fill a cauldron with water or getting wet by wading in to the Lake. After years at Durmstrang, the water here was pretty warm, even in the winter so Mason checked if his pants were still rolled up and he made his way to the edge of the Lake with the three stones in one hand and the textbook in the other.

Ok so...now he just..dropped a stone in? If all seemed silly how a few riples of water could supposedly tell the future. Aka it could not.

Dropping the round stone in the Lake first, Mason watched the surface break in to spirals. Normal spirals...nothing divinationing about it... mweh...

Now they got to the fun part! Hattie loved this part. She wasn't very good at this bit, but she figured that was what school was for. She was hoping to get better at divination, and was going to begin right here. She carefully opened her book up to page 30, and then she looked over it, wanting to read all the information before she started. She liked knowing what she was looking for, before she started.

That didn't take too long and now she could start! Hattie smiled, picking up the stones in her hand and waded out into the water. Carefully she dropped the circular stone, counted to 30, then dropped the triangle, and finally after another 30 seconds, she dropped the last, square, stone in the water.

And now to watch for the ripples and water movement.

Sonea 01-10-2017 09:41 PM

Looking at both the cauldron and the lake she shook her head. No way that she was going to step into the water if she didn’t needed to! She didn’t had forgotten her fall into the lake while she had been a first year and how afraid she had been because of those creatures inside the lake, not that she EVER would confess to anyone that she had been afraid at that time… But now, she just didn’t wanted to step into the lake and get her feet wet because… Why would she if she could prevent it!? This stupid lesson was already bad enough without getting wet feet! So the decision was a easy one to make and she took one of the cauldrons without even a second thought, not that she expected it to work…

With her textbook flipped open she prepared for the task, still cursing silently because she was forced to be here but now she was just annoyed with the headmaster who allowed such a lesson as this one to be given… Shaking her head again she decided that there was nothing else to do than to just… Get going and she took the first round stone in her hands and dropped it in the cauldron, 30 seconds later she dropped the triangular stone and again, 30 seconds later she dropped the square one and she… Just looked down at the water but… What was there to see besides the normal ripples of the water? Hmm… Not at all surprised she looked up from the cauldron when the water surface had became calm again and she rolled with her eyes. “How surprising…” she muttered softly to herself and quick she took the stones back out of the cauldron to try it again, not because she liked it but because she knew that the professor wouldn’t like it if she stopped already after her first attempt.

2111jen 01-11-2017 04:03 AM

So once everything was cleaned and squared away, it was time to drop the stones in. He dropped the square one first. Splash! It hit the water. Jonas studied the ripples...
It looked like nothing to him...huh...okay. So, he tried the next one, the triangle...again, nothing. He frowned and tried the circle...Jonas sighed and rolled his eyes. What was the point of this?

Post 1 (plus helping Ashley)

Olivia turned to glance at Ashley. She was always happy to help a housemate, especially someone as nice as Ashley. She grinned. “I used a Hot Air Charm to make them bone dry,” she said with a smile. “I can teach you. With your wand you do a complicated flick and..” Olivia placed her triangular stone back into the Lake and washed it again so that she could show Ashley how to do it. With her wand ready and pointed at the stone, she did a complicated flick and the stone became bone dry. “And voila!” She had always loved that expression. “If you want, I can do one for you as an example?"

Upon hearing Professor Vace’s instructions, Olivia pointed her wand at her feet and cast a heating charm to keep her toes nice and toasty as she headed slightly further out into the water. The water now was halfway up her shins. This seemed like a good place to stop. Round stone first, then triangular stone, and then the square stone. Leave 30 second intervals between the stone drops to study the patterns. She turned to look back at Ashley and Slate. “Do you guys want to team up together?” she offered. Perhaps they could all help each other out.

PERMISSION FOR PADDLING! Professor Vance was COOL... at least this term, so far. Yup. As long as the professor didn't keep assuming that just because Char's mum was a Seer that Charlotte herself had any iota of divination talent then Char was more than willing to label the blonde woman cool. Plenty paddling, no Seeing! THAT was how a divination class should be.

Of COURSE she was going to go and do it in the lake. But Char wasn't one who was big on writing stuff down anyway so, taking inspiration from Blaise's eternal note taking, Char charmed her quill and a bit of parchment to hover behind her shoulder. Yah. It could take notes for her. Maybe they'd even be useful notes, who knew?

Stones in hand, quill and parchment floating behind her, Char hurried back to the water. Now to pick a good spot before all the best spots were taken!

Winter Dreams 01-11-2017 09:50 AM

Ava was a little bit nervous about doing the hydromancy. She was worried that she might not understand the symbols and would get stuck. No, it'll be fine, she decided. She would just give it a go and see what happened. She picked up her stones and waded out into the lake. It was a bit chilly, but it wasn't too bad.

Deciding that she had found the spot she wanted to stand in, she took a deep breath and tried to clear her mind of distracting thoughts, hoping that might help. Okay. Here we go. Ava dropped the round stone into the water and stared at the ripples that started to form. It looked... circular. Well, the stone was round after all. So that probably wasn't it.

After she waited 30 seconds she dropped the triangle stone into the water. She saw wavy lines, circles, a bird maybe? This was hard. She looked around at the other students, partly wondering if they'd had any more luck, and maybe wishing she had a partner. Was she doing this wrong?

post 2.... questions

Wading out to her knees, Charlotte found a spot that was away from others enough that any water ripples wouldn't disturb HER readings probably. She clacked her stones in her fingers and was about to drop stone one aka the roundish stone when something occurred to her.

"Professor?" Her hand went up and she hollered loud enough to be heard from her spot in the water. "Why does the order of the stone shapes matter? Like what difference does it make and stuff?" Or errr... had that been mentioned while she hadn't been paying attention? "Also why those shapes in particular?"

Stone clean now - but certainly NOT dry although not without some effort applied with his robe - Derf was one again only half listening as Professor Vance spoke. He was still miffed about the lack of merpeople, okay? Give the 11-year-old kid a break, okay?

The Hufflepuff was looking out longingly at the lake while instructions were being given initially, but his head DID snap back around when he heard - through the magic that is selective hearing that mum said he was really good at - be careful to not go out too far though or you might get a visit from a disturbed giant squid spoken by the Divination professor.

SO THERE WAS HOPE AFTER ALL! FWOOOOOOOPAH!

Bouncing in place and trrrrrrrrrying to take in instructions, Derf waited until they were dismissed and marched back over to his enchanted suitcase his dad had charmed for him and pulled Scamander from his pocket. "S-S-Sorry, Scamander. But you need to s-s-stay here," he told his warty newt as he cracked open the suitcase and tucked the creature inside its tank within. His trouser pocket may have been enchanted to not squish his pet...but he had not thought to ask about protection from water. Something he would just have to ask about come Christmas vacation!

Rocks in hand, Derf made his way towards the lake - making sure to pause and grin and BOTH Zoryn and Charlie who should DEFINITELY come his way because he was going to get to meet the giant squid and Professor Vance had even said so - the first year took up a spot next to another blonde Gryffindor girl who was asking all sorts of GOOD questions.

Wait...shapes of rocks? He looked down at the one in his hands and supposed they were the right shape.

No time to go BACK to the pile of rocks now though. He had things to do and cephalopods to meet! So into the lake he went...way way waaaaaaaaay in until the water was up to his chin abouts - and it was COLD.

Now to...drop the rocks into the water, yeah? Um...he liked this one the least (the one that just so happened to be round) so he would discard that one first. PLOP! Into the lake it went and...er...ovalish squiggly circle shape ripples.

..........................and a giant squid????

The cauldron option would've been her choice had Junia not been focusing on the fact that using the smaller body of water would change her reading results. She wasn't even sure if she believed any of this type of stuff could be true to life, but on the off-chance it was, she wanted as accurate a reading as possible. Because honestly, who didn't want a glimpse into their future? It was only natural to want to know a bit more. It was.

The third year abandoned her notes on the shore and headed out into the water, just deep enough that her stones could sink out of sight. What was the order the stones were supposed to be dropped in? Round-yes, round first. Round, then triangle, then square. She gave her stones a once over and then closed her eyes and let the round one go. Hm..

Looking down at the water, Junia saw...a circle-y ripple that sort of got wavy as the water moved and settled again...huh.

Had thirty seconds passed yet?

Now she had wet stones and... oh the water looks so cold.

Post 1 - and mention of Bro :P

So they were just literally dropping stones in the water? Ok...

Kane wasn't sure how exactly he was supposed to see something OTHER than ripples in the water, but hey, he wouldn't know until he tried.

As he wadded out into the water, he turned to Brent, who was rolling up his pant legs next to him. He grinned and stuck his tongue out at him. "Nice look, bro!" he teased before walking into the water. He knew his bro was a lot more self conscious about his looks than he was and since opportunities to joke with him were slim now that they were in separate houses, he had to take it.

Alright, so she'd said to do...round one first right? He was pretty sure that was it. Taking his round rock, he picked the proper spot in the lake and...PLOP! Dropped it in.

Mini activity catch-up *ahem*

You know what was nice? When Professors took into account that not everyone and their grandmothers wanted to be casting magic all the time. It was bad enough it was a requirement in Charms and Transfiguration, didn't need it seeping into other subjects more than necessary. Given the option, the Gryffindor was naturally going to go with using the lake to wash the stones. It wasn't even a question.

Looking to the pile, Blaise sorted through the stones until, like the Professor instructed, he had a circular one, a triangular one and one in the shape of a square.

Much like Char, he was wondering what made these particular shapes so important to the practice but unlike her, he didn't care enough to ask. The answer would probably be super vague anyway, as most things in Divination tended to be.

While the others headed for the water, the Gryffindor took the time to sit and inspect his stones. Obviously he'd be picking the least dirty among them because that way he'd have less to clean in that lake water and it'd work out better for him. With the right ones chosen, he headed for the edge of the water and got all three plus his hands clean. He could have used a simple drying charm after to get them dry but that sounded an awful lot like it'd require him to actually cast sooooooo, he was just gonna dry them all in his shirt.

There. No harm done. Now what was that about rolling up sleeves and pants? They were properly going into the lake??

Olivia nodded as Ashley asked her to dry her stones. Of course! She'd be more than happy to assist! Mhmm..

Casting the charm again, she made sure they were bone dry. "Don't worry. It took me ages to get that spell working. I can definitely show you how to do this after class," she smiled. Alright so the order of the stones was round, triangular and then square. She eyed her stones as she waited for Ashley to be in the water with her.

Glancing over at the younger girl, she gave her a small nod. "Alright. It's the round stone first and then we wait thirty seconds. In that thirty seconds, we analyze and interpret the patterns. Then the triangular and then the square," she said, repeating more for herself so that she could remember later on in the class. She shuffled the rocks as so to get the round first to drop. "Are you ready?" she asked Ashley.

DaniDiNardo 01-11-2017 05:14 PM

Main activity starts here

There was no way he was going to stay by the shore and watch stones drop to the bottom of a cauldron. It completely defeated the purpose of them being out in the great outdoors and while he didn't particularly mind the idea of his reading being 'skewed' by the cauldron, he did mind staying dry for the entire lesson with the lake RIGHT there.

Consequently, he did go ahead to roll up his pants and his sleeves before nodding in gesture for his quill and notepad to follow him into the lake. No worries about them getting soaked and destroyed, it wasn't like anyone was splashing and flailing about like a lunatic in the water. For extra surety he'd even stand just a ways off from the bulk of his classmates too. Surely if they clustered together they'd just contaminate each other's reading anyway.

Also, Char had the right idea having her quill taking notes too. It was dead useful and saved you the trouble of doing it yourself.

Right, so dropping stones. A glance at his notepad reminded him--albeit a little extravagantly--that he'd be dropping the circular stone first and what? Thirty seconds? Seemed easy enough. Plop. Into the water it went. It took some guesswork and imagination but the boy began dictating all he saw to his quill. Well...what he THOUGHT he saw anyway.

Post 1: Mentions of Olivia <3

Carlton looked around him and watched the others wade out into the lake with their stones.

Did no one care about the supposedly huge and giant squid?!

Apparently not, since everyone was already starting to drop their first stone into the water. He jumped up from his straw mat and hugged his stones closer to him.

"Show me something good, stones." He murmured as he was struggling to roll up his trousers. "Please don't show me I'm about to be eaten by the squid. He begged quietly before realizing that talking to himself wouldn't help him do the assignment properly or making friends.

After the initial shock of the cold water around his legs he looked over and saw Olivia helping out a younger student. He waded over to her, relieved there was someone there he sort of knew.

"Hi, Oli-"

The wave he'd wanted to do ended up with him dropping one of the stones in the water in the process.

He squealed and looked down at the remaining stones in his hands. One triangular and one square. Which meant he'd successfully started the practical assignment. Sometimes luck was on his side. It wasn't often, but sometimes.

"Oh, it's started! I've started! One..." He continued counting up to thirty silently in his head. He didn't have time to say hello to Olivia anymore.

FOCUS. Don't lose count. And staaare at the water.

There were more students than usual around today but that was not what had attracted Bartholomew. Objects were constantly being dropped into his Lake. That made him slightly irritated. Bartholomew splashed his way closer to the shore to observe. There was a professor with them which meant there was a lesson being held.

“I say, children. Must you keep dropping objects into the water? It is very disturbing to me. I was trying to sun myself.’’
Bartholomew did not mean to be rude. He was just trying to enjoy the peace of the day.

One, two, three...hmm, thirty seconds seemed like a LOT time to Kane. Most of the ripples would be dispersed by that time, right? He continued to count nonetheless, watching as the ripples came slower and slower, and before he knew it - thirty seconds had passed.

PLOP! In went the second one, the triangular rock. The ripples looked...well, the same to him. Was it supposed to be different because it was a different size? Maybe he dropped it wrong. Whatever, he had to remember to count...thirty seconds passed again, and he dropped in the final rock, the square one. BLOOP!

Kane honestly didn't see ANYTHING in the ripples. He just saw...ripples. BUT if he squinted, that kind of looked like...a circle. Yup. That was all he seeing. But maybe that was a good thing? Was that what the ripples WANTED him to see? He looked it up in his book...he'd consider that a loop, alright. And that meant he had to avoid impulsive actions.

Yup, that sounded like Kane.

Ripple.

Ripple.

Ripple.

Was it meant to do more than that? Hattie frowned, just watching the ripples. It had kind of gone out in like circles. But that was it really. She tilted her head, just watching her ripples. Was that it?

She looked up, noticing that Charlotte had got her parchment and quill to float behind her. Ooh! That was good! Hattie made a mental note to try and learn that spell, then she could make this so much easier

But for now she needed to try and work out what she had seen. The water had gone more calm now. Well it had. But the giant squid was here now.

"Oh wow..." The third year murmured, staring at her. "Uh... I'm sorry for disturbing you!" Though she still had no clue what she should have been looking at. Oh well. She was distracted by the giant squid now.

DH Vixen 01-11-2017 09:04 PM

Zara glanced down at herself and nodded in satisfaction. Everything looked to be where they needed to be and she was as ready as she was going to be for this lesson. Wiggling her toes a bit in excitement, she turned her full attention to Professor Vance and listened closely. It all seemed to be straightforward, but she paid extra close attention all the same. Drop the stones in the water, making sure there was at least 30-secs between drops, and then interpret what shapes and lines were there. Yeah, it was straightforward but she was still a bit worried.

Glancing at the cauldron and back to the lake, Zara tilted her head every so slightly in thought. It would probably be safer and easier for her to just collect lake water and use the cauldron, but was she really going to turn down an opportunity to wade in the lake and not get in tomorrow? It was obviously going to be the lake for her. At the mention of the giant squid, she glanced at the lake and squinted her eyes slightly looking for any sign of it. She had heard stories and she kind of wanted to meet or see the squid. That would really be super cool and she could write home about it.

Reaching for her wand again, she looked down at her feet and cast a simple heating charm on them. She didn’t think she got cold easily, but it was always better to be safe than sorry. Plus, it was very likely that the lake was really cold at the moment and the thought kind of made her feel cold as well. Once she was convinced the heating charm had taken, her feet felt very warm now; she stored her wand again and gathered her stones.

Walking to the lake’s bank, she slowly began to wade out into the lake. Once she was about up to the middle of her calves, she stopped and stood ever so still. She didn’t want her movements to interfere with the shapes the stones would make. After the water around her seemed to settle, she looked down to the stones in her hand and pulled the round one out. Holding it in front of her, she dropped it and began to count to 30 slowly.

.
.
.

Just as she was about to reach 30, she noticed movement in the water and looked in the direction of it. With wide eyes, she finally saw the squid and was at a lost for words!

THE GIANT SQUID WAS REAL

Still in a bit of awe, Zara shook her head and returned to her counting. She just hoped that the few moments she had lost concentration wouldn’t hinder her reading all that much.

At the count of 30, she dropped the triangle stone and started her counting again. This time she was a lot more focused and didn’t looked at the squid, even though she knew it was there. Finally, she dropped the square stone and looked at the water’s surface in deep thought. This was time she really needed to focus!

Kane figured he should probably try and see MORE in the ripples besides just a loop sooooo...yeah. He focused really hard on the shapes of the water, trying to see ANYTHING. That circle there kind of looked like...a sun! Yes, that could totally be a sun! With the little ray thingies coming off around it.

Sun meant...happiness, success and power. BOOM. He would totally take that!

His attention was briefly turned towards...THE GIANT SQUID?! HOLY MERLIN! There he was! And he did NOT seem too pleased about all this rock throwing business. Kane bit his lip and turned to the professor. "She told us too!" he told...what was his name? Oh no. He remembered he HAD a name but couldn't remember the actual name.

Yeah, it was TOTALLY professor lady's fault. Yup.

Tim and Squid

Nat sat and listened to the professor. So the reading seemed interesting. She really at times couldn't understand where all of this could actually make a real reading. She actually liked divination and felt it was really interesting, but if she truly believed it or not was a different story. She just couldn't wrap her head around some of these things. Last term it was the slugs and now dropping rocks in the lake that would probably really make the mermaids, fish, even the squid mad. Plus what if the other creatures got annoyed?

Nat looked at Tim when it was time, "I think I'm just getting a cauldron. There seem to be enough students in the lake." Nat had swum in that lake many of times so it wasn't that she didn't like getting in, but she just wasn't sure the reading could be that accurate with so many students and her hand went up. "Professor, with so many students doing this at the same time, wouldn't that change the reading as well? I mean if people are too close their waves will run into each other."

Getting up Nat was just about to grab a cauldron when she saw him. The squid was already annoyed and she hadn't started yet. Moving to the lake to get the water she smiled at him. "I'm sorry we bothered you, Bartholomew. We won't be long with our class." She had only been near the squid one other time, but she didn't want him mad. Slipping the cauldron in the lake she got it full of water and went back over to her seat to do her reading.

Slate did, in fact, not know the incantation. Nor did he feel like listening to any of the older students. Why? Because teachers got paid to teach him something. So he'd continue to not know the spell until a Professor taught it to him in class.

So, he followed the girl to the lake and rinsed off the stone. He lightly rubbed them with his fingers under the water and figured that was good enough. There wouldn't be that much dirt that was on it, right?

Now that he had rinsed stones, he dried them off on his shirt. Now... he needed to get them wet again...? Well... okay... He could do that. It just seemed kind of counter productive.

Now she had wet stones and... oh the water looks so cold.

Me poor legs.

Slate grabbed his textbook then followed the girls out into the lake more. He rolled his trousers up as he walked so he wouldn't be completely wet later. That wouldn't be pleasant. Once they reached a spot he unceremoniously dropped the round stone. He watched it splash into the water, causing ripples and water droplets to pop back and fall back down.

Was he supposed to be seeing something?

He consulted his textbook. Circles and dots. ... erm?

He leaned over and whispered "Either I'm doing something wrong, or I might be pregnant." But it was probably the first.

But hey. There was... a ... squid? That was a squid right? Could he drop the next stone and say that that was what he saw? What would be the chances the Professor would know that's what he'd done?

Ava was focusing on counting her last thirty seconds, when she saw movement in the lake. She had heard talk of a giant squid being in the lake, but no one had said anything about it talking! It startled her so, that she dropped her last stone into the water. Had it been thirty seconds? She hoped so. Looking at the water she tried to concentrate on the ripples as much as she could, and not worry about anything else. She turned her head slowly left, and then slowly right, trying to imagine what shapes from the textbook could be in the water.

When the water became still again, and she went over what she thought she had seen so that she might remember it, for whatever good that might do, and she glanced over at the squid again. "Very sorry to have disturbed you, uh..." Squid? She didn't know what to call him.

But back to the lesson. Ava looked back at the Professor, wondering what would happen next.

Jacob had thoroughly cleaned and dried his chosen stones and the indicated body parts. Okay, then. Time to get practical. He weighed his options, cauldron or lake. There were getting to be a lot of people in the lake... Professor Vance had said using a cauldron would affect the reading, but surely the ripples of twenty students' stones dropping in the water would affect it more. He opted for the cauldron, thinking that it might leave less room for error. He could use that leg up in divination.

He opened his book to page 30 as instructed, then put it off to the side where it was out of the way, but he could still see it. He took a quick glance at some of the symbols... Maybe if he knew what some of the possibilities were, he'd have a better chance of seeing something. Although he still had no idea how doing this was supposed to show him anything. It's like he'd been saying before, he could only see that there was a shape in the Magic Eye pictures. He couldn't see what it was. Alright, so it wasn't a direct correlation, to be sure, but it had to mean something, right?!

He frowned into the cauldron, as if he could will the water to cooperate with him and make it easy to see the shapes he was meant to. Okay, better just do it. He braced himself, raising the hand in which he held the round stone over the cauldron, then let it fall into the water with a satisfying plop.

He counted thirty seconds, then repeated the process with the triangular stone, then did the same with the last square stone after another interval. He peered over the lip of the cauldron, looking at the ripples to see if any shapes or patterns emerged.

The water had muffled most of the sound from the rocks, but the cauldron was reverberating a bit with the impact. That was probably going to affect what he saw... If he saw anything. He sighed, still looking in concentration into the cauldron.

Well, he guessed that part there looked sort of like an eye... It was sort of ovally. And that bit was a triangle kind of shape... He guessed that might have just been from dropping the triangle stone, though. Still, it counted, right? Hmm... That ripple looked kinda like a bird, he guessed.

He was tempted to stir the water to get more shapes to appear, but he also knew that defeated the entire purpose, so he refrained. Three was enough, right? It was more than he thought he'd see, anyway. (He sort of doubted he'd actually seen any of these, really. His brain probably made all of it up because he was so worried about seeing nothing.)

'Kay, so time to interpret. First one was an eye. He looked at the textbook, skimming the alphabetical list until he came to what he was looking for. Was it one eye or two? Definitely just one. So that meant... "Insight; clear understanding of a situation." Okay, then. He liked that, he guessed. It was good to have insight and understanding... Still, what situation was that supposed to be talking about? There was a good chance he'd understand any situation he might be placed in. He wasn't in Ravenclaw for nothing. Well, that just seemed generic. Like No-Maj horoscopes that were so vague that they could apply to anyone and be right.

Anyway, moving on. Second was a triangle. Moving down the page, his finger landed on the word. Upright or reversed? Well, it was right-side up. And it looked like that was a good thing. "A positive situation with three people." Hey, that might actually make sense. He had been feeling very positive about his newfound friendship with Olivia and Etta. With him, that was three people. And that had turned out better than he'd hoped it would. He really liked the both of them.

Last one, then. A bird. Hmm, three options... Perched, flying, or a flock. It had sort of just looked like a squiggle to him, like the kind of bird little kids draw flying around. So... Flying, he guessed. "Good news." Well, alright then.

So... He'd understand a situation... A positive situation with three people involved... And then get good news about it, too? He guessed that was a good reading. If his interpretation was correct, anyway. And it very well might not be. Again, he wasn't even sure he'd actually seen anything... His Ravenclaw brain just couldn't handle failure, so it made up some stuff for him to see, probably. Oh, well. At least it hadn't made up something that said he was going to die or something like that.

He wrote down his findings quickly, attempting to draw the shapes he'd seen, as well. He looked around to see if everyone else seemed like they were getting it easily... And he secretly wondered how many of them were just making things up.

Oh! Look! It was the squid!

"Hello Sir Bartholomew Henry!" Charlotte greeted happily, always one to be pleased to see him. She knew from her own experiences with the giant squid, and from advice from her parents from their own time as students, that he responded best to very good manners, so she curtsied with a jaunty flourish right there at knee depth in the water, then asked with great curiosity, "You could really feel our small ripples?" Really? "Wow! The merpeople must be SUPER annoying to you just from their normal moving about and stuff! And also when people go, you know, skinny dipping, that must be WAY more disturbing than a bunch of stones! Sorry though! That you were disturbed! Its just that we're learning about hydromancy! Its a kind of divination, Oh Mr Bartholomew Henry I haven't dropped my stones in yet - do YOU want to have a go? We can figure out your future! I'll let you use mine!" Char extended her hand with the stones in them in offer.

Grabbing her notebook and a pencil, Tim casted a heating charm on her feet. Putting the stones in her sweater's pocket, the blonde nudged her friend and walked into the lake. "I figured we can help each other out since divination tends to confuse me sometimes," She smiled at Natalia. Seriously, either one of them had to be good at divination to be able to get a good reading from hydromancy. Hopefully she'd get a good reading from this; she deserved it. Tim's already had a somewhat ehh summer and just wanted her last term to be better than the rest she's had. Picking a spot and holding her pencil and notebook in her left arm, Tim picked out the circular stone from her pocket and dropped it into the water. Instead of writing what she sees, the Gryffindor decided it was much easier to draw it out. That way at the end, she'll be able to decipher the image much faster and clearer than she could by taking down notes. Watching the ripples forming, Tim quickly sketched them onto her paper the bast way she could.

She then heard a commotion going on and looked up when her ripples from the first stone were pretty much gone. Picking up the stone and looking around, Tim saw the giant squid had made an appearance.... Squealing quietly, Tim tugged on Natalia's sleeve and pointed. The blonde was really tempted to step closer but figured it was best not to. Still, this was probably the first time she actually saw the faint squid pop up from the lake.

Standing before her cauldron she shot a REALLY irritated look at the professor and thought REALLY loud in her head, hoping that if the professor wasn’t fake that she at last would look up at her to show that she wasn’t faking; “HE YOU! STUPID PFORESSOR!? CAN YOU HEAR ME? THIS LESSON IS SOOOOO STUPID AND FAKE! LALALAAALA!” But when she was done she grinned to herself, not expecting a response from the professor at all because she already had decided for herself that this lessons was just… Shaking her head she dropped her stones again inside the cauldron, first the round one, 30 seconds later the triangular one and again 30 seconds later the square one. Looking down at the water she again saw NOTHING more than the normal ripples in the water and with a frustrated sigh she slapped the water with her flat hand to create a splashing sound. “STUPID lesson!” She muttered, just when… Oh oh… Was that... The Giant Squid? Her eyes widened immediately and she was really relieved that she wasn’t standing inside the lake right now…

Nat couldn't help but laugh when Tim said about Divination confusing her, "It does me too." Though it was one of her stronger subjects. Her problem was more believing in some of it then understanding it she decided. She watched as Tim went into the lake as Nat sat near the edge with her cauldron of water. She was good staying out. Her laughter grew more as Tim squealed about the squid. "Have you seen him before?" He wasn't around often so some probably hadn't.

As she sat looking into the cauldron she dropped her round stone. Watching the ripples move through the cauldron Nat picked up her quill and began to write. "So Tim do you think that the ripples are more in the cauldron then they would be in the lake?" It was a smaller space so she was interested to see. Getting up she went over to look at the lake to see how Tim's stone went.

Professor Vance watched as her class spread out along the lake shore and then waded out into the water to get started with their readings. She took her time and walked around from student to student to see how things went or if they needed extra instructions when she first heard 'professor' and then saw Charlotte Kettleburns upraised hand in the air.

Walking over the sand to the lioness Laurel answered kindly as she approached the fifth year girl. "The order of stones matters because if you drop the stones in another order then it will disrupt the reading of the ripples too much and you will have a very hard time interpreting the shapes and forms and lines that form on the water surface."

"I chose those three stone shapes because I know from experimentation that they are best when you wish to impact the water ripples to form shapes, forms and lines in distinctively different ways. Other stones shapes doesn't give as clear and easy to interpret shapes, lines and forms as the triangular, circular and square give." Laurel finished off wondering if Charlotte had more questions.

It was then that the Giant Squid decided to pay the class a visit. She was going to let him interact with her students for now. If they became in danger then she'd get him to leave.

OOC: Everyone, one day left to finish your readings. I'm wrapping up the lesson tomorrow around this time.

Tim shook her head at Nat's question. In all her seven years here, she had never gotten the chance to see Bartholomew with her own eyes. So this was super exciting for her. She did feel bad about the dropping of the stones into the water, but it was for a good cost. Maybe he'd move to a deeper part of the lake where they wouldn't bother him as much as they currently did. Taking the circular stone out and putting it back in her pocket, Tim made little side notes on her paper and looked around a bit. People were mostly doing well with the simple task for now. Just wait until they have to decipher it. Taking the triangular stone out and dropping it into the water, Tim answered Nat's question.

"Doing it in a cauldron won't be as accurate as in the lake. The ripples might bounce back from the cauldron and to the center again," Tim assumed her friend didn't listen to what the professor has said earlier but was okay with it. Watching her ripples as she answered the question, she sketched these lightly on top of the previous ones. They seemed to be a bit more squiggly this time. Maybe she'll get like a spider or something.

Okay so this was gonna be another year of mystery to the 13 year old.. She never did truly understand this part of magic.. She didn't find it at all consistant enough to rely on really.. But here she was listening to those students around her that had some type of knowledge and maybe even interest if this artform ... Personally she felt it was a mystism more that a magic... She shrugged to herself at the thought but listened nevertheless to the goings on and what was being said...Hopefully some of the information might stick into her brain...

She had been listening, gosh Tim.. lol, but what she had wondered was would the ripples just expand more in the lake or because of all the students would it cause probably the same thing the cauldron would. Ripples bouncing off of each other. She actually wondered if it truly mattered. Either way, she wasn't getting in the lake with everyone. She was already too cold as it was. She wasn't born for colder days. "I don't know though, my ripples are doing pretty good in this." She glanced down at the lake where Tim had just dropped another stone and then back to her own cauldron. Taking the second stone she dropped it in to watch the ripples go out over the first group. It was an interesting site and she jotted more of her notes down.

As she started to jot some notes and grab her third stone she noticed a familiar face just sitting there. "Hey Miranda, did you need some help? If you get your three stones Tim and I could probably help you." Since she wasn't sure if Miranda would want to go in the lake or just hang out with a cauldron like Nat did.

Oh the squid seemed to have tons of students attracted to him now, well then she wondered if anyone would be getting their work done now or would they all just focus on him. Either way she wasn't to concerned. Her eyes went back to her caudlron to do her third and final stone.

part 1

Going into the lake sounded like good fun to Kitty. Since she was wearing shorts she didn't have to worry about rolling up her robes, but she did have to remove her red socks. After folding them neatly and putting them on a dry patch of ground where they were unlikely to get wet, she waded into the shallow part of the lake and found a spot a little bit separate from everyone else to study.

She dropped her stones just as Professor Vance had instructed. First fell the round one. Then the triangle. Finally, the square. Kitty mentally counted the seconds in between each drop.

Something brushed her leg, making her start in surprise. It was just a minnow. There were minnows darting around by her feet, a whole school of them. Kitty was okay with that, just so long as no leeches showed up! She wondered what kind of insects there were living in the lake. Were there water worms living in the sand? Curiously she bent down and brushed the sand in the water with her left hand. (The minnows promptly scattered.) Despite being normally a very clean person, mud always felt good to Kitty, the soft touch of mud or sand covered with water always felt oddly satisfying to touch. After playing with the sand for a few moments while examining the plants and fishes swimming around her, Kitty decided she should probably go back to her readings.

Then just as she was about to study her rocks, the Squid came floating out of the depths of the lake to visit them. Kitty ogled it with awe. Part of her wished it would approach her so she could touch it, though part of her was scared it would grab her.

" That would be brilliant, Nat.. thanks.. ", She smiled.. " oh.. bugger.. That's right.. I'd forgotten.. ". Randa really didn't want to get close to the water nor did she really care about the Squid.. she'd spoken to him before so it was no big deal to her really that he was there and everyone was crowding around him.." Post 2 Hiiii Mr. Henry <3

Junia's eyes widened slightly when the giant squid appeared. "Hello! You were my example of what could change the results of a reading, but I never really considered that a reading could disturb you." Or the other occupants of the lake, for that matter. She gave Mr. Henry an apologetic smile and then held up her triangle stone, as if giving him warning that she needed to continue with her work. If he got a heads-up, he wouldn't be as cross, yes?

Waiting another moment, the third year let the triangle go, watching it sink until it was no longer visible. The curvy lined ripples that appeared on the surface shortly after were noted, though Junia wasn't sure how accurate they were now that they had company-very large company who could cause lots of movement on the water's surface with the slightest movement of his body. Hm.

That was interesting that she didn't want to be around people. Part of her wanted to ask what was going on and the other part wasn't sure she really cared to talk about it. Her eyes back on her own cauldron she dropped the last stone and looked taking notes on what it looked like. "Sure you can hang over here, but you'll need to fill a cauldron with lake water and grab three stones like the professor said." To do a reading on herself she would have to drop her own stones and things.

Glancing back up to Tim to see how she was doing she looked again in her cauldron, "I think mine looks like a ring. That's kind of an odd thing." Though maybe it was more common than not. Really the ripples were all circles, weren't they? She looked into her book to see if she could find what she was looking for.

What?

Laughter started, so much laughter. She might have been laughing so hard it was echoing the lake. "OMG Tim, you have to hear this." She looked to Miranda as well, "It says in the book that a ring means marriage or an offer of marriage." Who the hell in their right mind would even think to offer her marriage. That was just ridiculous.

SarcasticStrawberry 01-13-2017 01:14 AM

Right... since Kat was already in the lake she was ready. Stacking the stones the round one, the triangle, and the square stone on top. That way she could drop them right into the water. She got a good spot or in her opinion a good spot.

Drop goes the round stone. Counting out the seconds. She dropped the triangle stone. Then counting down to the thirty seconds, she dropped the last square stone into the lake.

Since she was out in the lake, wading she couldn't bring her book so she had plenty of time and focus to look at her ripples and decode the shapes. Then she would go and find out what there meaning was.

Main Activity Post 1

Alright, time to get hands on and do the activity portion of the lesson. Cassie listened intently at what Professor Vance had to say about what they were going to do, well the options they had to do their readings, in her mind already debating which one to do. More accurate in lake getting deeper into it…or taking the easier, less accurate approach and using the cauldron? Nah! No contest. She wasn’t one to flinch or squirm, at least too much, at the less than clean assignments. So that meant right in the lake for her. Thankfully the Ravenclaw didn’t think her mind was too flighty to not remember what she saw for when she returned back to the shore.

Oh and that her skirt meant her pants didn’t need to be rolled up.

She did kick off her shoes, placing them and her socks beside her bag topped with her note parchment and quill to be ready. Cass left out the heating charm on her feet for now, she could always warm them up once she was back out. When she was ready, she waded into the water with her three stones securely in her grasp, her movements careful and precise. She certainly didn’t want to slip and go plop fully into the water, or take the chance of hitting a spot that might go deeper than she wanted. Not to mention make too much waves in the lake water to affect her reading. As it was, the Ravenclaw made sure to not be too close to others.

Satisfied with where she was, Cassie stopped and settled in place. The fourth year let the water calm before pulling out the round stone from her trio. She took a deep breath and let it drop into the water, concentrating on seeing the effects of the drop and picking up on the shapes made.

Did a simple circle count?

SarcasticStrawberry 01-13-2017 01:33 AM

She heard a laugh echo across the lake. She was half tempted to look up and see what was so funny. Must watch the ripples She couldn't take her attention from the rings... ripples. Wavy little lines maybe? Maybe not. Circles?

Or if she tilted her head a little to the right. Mmmmm that was something there. No having her textbook she would have to remember she had seen. She had seen one thing and the water was still rippling so maybe she should look to find something else.

So far she had seen something arrow shaped, or a straight line. She was going with an arrow shape though. But there were also definitely some wavy lines too. Circles she should go with that too.

Brent had fell silent for a little while, but that was only because he'd lost his train of thought and somehow started thinking about sports. This lake would be awesome to fly over! But Divination...that's what he was here for now. Focus, Brent. So he had two options of doing this, and truth be told, he was definitely going with the funnest option! That meant there would be no cauldron, and he'd drop the stone straight into the lake!

Apparently the cauldron messed up the reading anyway...

He'd already rolled up his trouser legs and kicked off his shoes causing himself to look like an idiot, he thought, so he was probably ready to get started. He wasted no time wading out into the water. He really wanted to go swimming and was tempted to do so. When he got far enough out, he tossed the round stone in the water and looked down at it to look for his results.

First, the ripples went every which way, causing Brent to get very confused. Then they slowly changed until he could see a very distinct letter U. Brent nodded to nobody in particular, as he tried to remember the letter for his interpretation he'd do later. He was just about to move on to the next stone, when out popped the squid. Brent turned all his attention to the sea creature, and when it was done talking, Brent immediately had a question for it. "Sun bathing? Cool! You know any good spots?" he asked.

Soooo, now it was time to begin. Janelle headed toward the water and paused when she reached the edge. Stones in hand, she tentatively put one foot in the water. It wasn't as cold as she'd expected, but she probably wouldn't want to take too long on this task. Janelle continued walking forward, until the water was just below her rolled up pants cuff. Then she stopped and allowed herself to get used to the temperature. Besides, she should probably stay still for a bit, to allow the water to become calm.

Now Janelle was ready. She wasn't too keen on having to remember everything until she could get back to her parchment. What could she do though? She'd just have to remember all the details or her reading would be rubbish. Janelle took her round stone and dropped it gently into the water. Staring at the lake's surface, she waited for something dramatic to happen. The result was a little less exciting than she had anticipated. As the stone hit the water, circular ripples flowed outward from the point of entry, one after the other. Okaaay. Circles. That was it? That one should be easy enough to remember.

Hoping for something a little more interesting, Janelle prepared to drop her second stone. And so in went the triangular stone. This time she was not disappointed. Looking closely, the ripples seemed to form......a bird.......an eagle. Could Janelle have been imagining that? An eagle.......for a Ravenclaw? Well that one should be easy to remember too. Now she was intrigued. Janelle wanted to get back to her textbook and find out what these things meant. Before she could do that, she needed to drop her third stone.

Anna Banana 01-13-2017 03:38 AM

Brent blinked. The letter U? Was that even one of the choices? Squinting, he leaned in closer, hoping some squid didn't jump in his face. Then just barely, he could make out the shape of...was that a unicorn?

Hearing the professor's voice, Brent turned toward her and listened as she pretty much told them to hurry up. Well, not exactly in those words, but he really didn't have a ton of time left. So far, he'd seen a unicorn in the ripples, and that was engraved in his mind, so that when he returned to the shore to write down his findings, he'd remember what to write about.

He pushed himself a little further into the water just to give him a fresh, new place to work. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out both the triangular stone and the square stone. The triangular stone was next, so he tossed it into the water and kept the square stone clasped tightly in his hand. The ripples began to move about, first in little circles but then in all different kinds of lines and shapes. He couldn't make out anything, though, so he narrowed his eyes and studied it more.

A wasp.

The ripples ended up being a very clear wasp-like shape before they dissolved into nothing. A unicorn and a wasp were now his two shapes. He textbook was still on the shore, so he had no idea what the shapes meant. Even still, he didn't really like the idea of Divination and still thought it'd tell him nothing about his future.

SarcasticStrawberry 01-13-2017 04:02 AM

With her mind on the arrows, straight lines, wavy lines and circles. Kat headed back to the shore. If she had to be in there much longer she would have gotten cold. She cast a warming charm, just to warm herself up. She sat down in the grass with her textbook, notebook and quill.

She looked up arrow first, "A" arrow first letter, yes. The only problem was she didn't remember which way the arrow she had seen was pointing. Maybe it was pointing down or left or right. She supposed it really depended on the way she looked at it really. She was going to say down for that one.

Then she looked up circle in her book. Completion, and success. And if it had dots a baby. Did it have dots? Was she getting a new baby in her family? Probably. it was highly likely with someone in her family. But she didn't recall seeing dots with the circles.

She looked up straight lines, and found nothing.... oh lines. Wavy curvy that was like the same thing right? Journey with minor complications. Well that made sense but so did the arrow too. Wavy lines... She peeked at book and snorted, yes this reading took place at the lake.

That reading might be the truest one.

SPOILER!!: Katerina's notebook

ARROW - direction and focus

pointing up - good direction and focus
pointing down - wrong direction or lack of focus
near to and pointing toward handle - focus on home and family
near to and pointing away from handle - focus on matters outside the home and family
horizontal and pointing left - answer lies in the past
horizontal and pointing right - focus on the future

CIRCLE - success, completion; with dots means a baby

LINES -
long straight line indicates a journey
long line with slight curves; a journey with minor complications

WAVY LINES - large body of water such as a lake, river or ocean

Main Activity post & brief mention of Derf!

It was now time for Charlie to go forth and conquer! There was a lot less risk involved with Divination, as opposed to her other subjects, so that allowed the girl to fully enjoy and take in her new experiences.

So, she had to drop the stones in the water--round first, triangle second, and square third--with 30 second intervals between each to leave adequate time to study the patterns. Right. It was a good thing she had remembered to take her cauldron with her, because she didn't want to bring her textbook out in the water (and she didn't have the best memory either, so she wouldn't have the best of luck remembering the patterns). With her cauldron, she wouldn't have to go out--or stay out, at least, because she did have to fill it up first. She smiled back in Derf's direction to be polite, but waved him off as she wanted to be able to focus. Unfortunately, if she was with her friends, she might not want to focus as much.

Charlie set the stones back down on her mat, and she picked up her cauldron before making her way to the lake. She waded in a bit to get enough water in her cauldron and did just that, getting a nice, big scoop out. She hurried (but not so much that the water would spill out) back to her mat shortly after, as the water was quite cold.

Now it was time to get down to business. She took a seat on the mat, setting the cauldron down in front of her. After drying her slightly-damp hands on her pants, Charlie cracked open her textbook to the correct page and picked up the first stone--the round one, of course. Holding the stone over the cauldron, she let it drop, keeping her eyes on it as it plopped in. Well...she saw circles. That seemed pretty typical, but maybe it still meant something. She turned her head away from the cauldron for a brief moment and to the textbook, letting her finger drag down the list to locate "circle." Abacus...barrel...chicken...circle!

Charlie said the definition quietly to herself: "Success, completion; with dots means a baby." Well, there were no dots, so it had to have something to do with success or completion, or possibly both. She wasn't really sure what this would refer to (she would hope school), but made sure to take note of what she saw and the supposed meaning on her parchment. This way, she'd be able to refer to it later and see if it came true.

30 seconds had more or less passed, so it was now time for the triangle stone. She picked it up and dropped it in the cauldron, just like the round one. She saw circles...again. Well. Maybe it referred to an excess of success, or, completion, but that was probably a reach. She made note of seeing circles again on the parchment.

And finally, the square-shaped stone. Dropping the last stone in, she squinted extra hard, trying to determine even the faintest of a symbol from the ripples. Huh...this one rather looked like a kite. Maybe? It was good enough for her. She turned to the textbook, locating the word kite. "Wishes coming true," Charlie read. If she did indeed see a kite, she was pleased! Success and fulfilled wishes were certainly positive omens. She took note of supposedly seeing a kite on the parchment.

Charlie had finished the activity, and in good time too! To pass the time, she took to reading some of the other meanings in the book. She'd have to try some more readings on her own time.

DH Vixen 01-13-2017 04:39 AM

Zara frowned as she looked at the water where she had just dropped her stones. She could see that there was ripples and shapes but she didn’t really know what they were. Squinting her eyes a bit, she attempted to identify whatever was there. There looked to be maybe something that looked like a bell. A bell? She wasn’t all that sure, but she focused again and notice another shape faintly. A cloud. Yes, it looked like a cloud to her. It was kind of blob like, but she thought it resembled a cloud and she was going to put that down. Focusing once again on the water, she tilted her head and blinked slightly. There must be something there still. She had a feeling there was more!

Staring again at the water, she about gave up when she thought she saw wavy lines, but again it was possible that they were just the natural movements of the lake water. Glancing around, Zara shrugged and slowly made her way out of the water. She needed to get back to her notebook and textbook to look up what she thought she saw.

Anna Banana 01-13-2017 05:07 AM

So now it was time for the third and final stone--the square stone. Brent still had it in his hand, so he tossed it into the water and played the whole waiting game. Since he'd already done this twice before, he pretty much figured he'd have to look at a mess of ripples before he was able to see anything specific. Then just like he said, the ripples circled out in all directions making it hard to figure out if there was any kind of shape in them at all.

Brent looked down at them. Literally the only part of his body that was moving was his eyeballs. He stood still and quiet while he waited for a shape to appear. Slowly, the ripples began to morph into something else. The bottom ripples disappeared, and the top ones curved upward a bit more. Pretty soon, Brent was staring at a horseshoe in the water.

So he had a unicorn, a wasp, and a horseshoe. He hurried back to shore, dried off, and retrieved his textbook. Opening it, he moved his finger across the page until he came to the words he'd been looking for.

UNICORN - something lost for good
WASP - romantic problems
HORSESHOE - good luck

Hmm... Spreading out a piece of parchment before him, Brent dipped his quill in ink and jotted down some notes.

So I've just seen a unicorn, a wasp, and a horseshoe. I'm not really sure what to think, but let's start with the unicorn. It means something lost for good. That doesn't sound really cool, and I honestly have no idea what I've lost.

Or that's what I thought.

Moving on to the wasp stone, I see where wasp means romantic problems. Suddenly, it hit me like a ton of bricks! You see, I had this girlfriend in America named Madelyn. She dumped me when I told her I was moving all the way across the pond. I miiiiiiight miss her. We won't share that secret with anybody, will we?

Anyway, I think the unicorn and the wasp are trying to tell me Madelyn is gone for good. GOOD. She dumped me! I still can't believe she did that! Then, as if the lake is just begging to tell me it's on my side, the third stone showed a horseshoe in the ripples, and that means good luck! So in conclusion, I've learned that Madelyn is gone for good, but there should be lots more luck hopefully finding a new girlfriend in the future!

Daydreamer11 01-13-2017 12:20 PM

Taking a deep breath, Janelle dropped her square stone into the lake. Immediately, the water started to ripple. Looking down, she tried to make out some type of pattern. This one wasn't as easy as the others. Janelle tried to make sense of what she was seeing. The closest thing she could come up with was........a tent? The ripples kind of looked like a big circus tent. That was a serious stretch, but that was the best she could do. As much as Janelle liked the water, she had never spent time analyzing it like this. It seemed kind of like trying to find things in clouds.

With her stones dropped, Janelle hurried back to dry land. She did not want to forget what she had seen. Plopping down next to her things, she grabbed her quill and began to write. When she had written down everything she could remember, she grabbed her textbook. Janelle turned to page thirty and began to scan the list for her items. Fortunately, she was able to find all three things in the book. Getting a fresh piece of parchment, she began to write.

SPOILER!!: Janelle's Interpretation

1. Circle- success, completion, with dots means a baby
2. Eagle- overcoming barriers, on the path to success
3. Tent- Travel

I think this means that things will not always be easy for me, but in the end I will be successful. I will complete whatever I set out to do, but not without obstacles. Maybe there will be travel involved in whatever task this reading is referring to.

Janelle was extremely glad that the meaning of her symbols had been positive. With Divination, things could go either way. Now that she was done, Janelle put her parchment down and sat back, waiting for further instructions.

So...um...first stone had been all circular ovaly ripple shape...and he couldn't remember what that meant off the top of his head but it was easy enough to remember anyway...probably...and since he had now counted to 20...21...in his head he...26...27...needed too...28...29...

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!

He was just going to...wade through the water a little bit more towards this Gryffindor's direction because that sounded really NEAT!

Not to mention she had explained the best to the Giant Squid what all they were doing - probably...she had been the only person he had actually HEARD so his view point was a bit biased - but her offer to perform the reading was really REALLY nice and interesting and...

"Can I watch?! PWEASE?!" he pleaded asked with BIG OL' BEGGING BLUE EYES.

Post 2: Catch-up on main activity! Mentions of Olivia

Carlton's eyes were fixed at the squid that had appeared right after he'd dropped his first stone.

It talked. It talked. Although he was terrified he still didn't refrain from dropping his second stone after 30 seconds had passed. He was terrified of the squid but also desperate to finish the task. He dropped the square stone and counted silently to himself for the third time. Since he didn't know any heating charms and hadn't had the time to ask Olivia for help before he accidently dropping the first stone started his reading.

The appearance of a huge giant squid that talked to the students might have disturbed his focus sliiiiiiightly. His brow furrowed and looked down at the ripples on the water. He glanced at the other students and then back to the water.

He could see his own reflection, but he was pretty sure Professor Vance wouldn't accept that as an answer. Then he looked at something that looked like a bird, feathers and wings and balls or circles. Then the rippled died out.

Carlton squealed and hurried up from the water. Bird, wings, circles. Bird, wings, circles. The absolute first thing he did was to put on his dried socks.

Sweet Merlin, the warmth. When his feet weren't two popsicles anymore he opened his textbook to find... Anything that made sense.

CHICKEN - domestic comfort and happiness
FEATHER - lack of concentration
BALL - fun and games

A chicken. A chicken is a bird. So... That could be right. He nodded to himself and scribbled it down into his notebook.
And then he saw wings... A feather? It stood for lack of concentration. Worriedly he glanced over at the professor. She-She would understand his concentration was disturbed by the giant squid, right? Right?!
And there were just a lot of circles from the third stone; Circle. Success and completion. Carlton shook his head. Probably not. He went with Ball instead which meant fun and games.

That was probably it. He obviously wasn't good at Divination.

DuckyLinJi 01-13-2017 02:10 PM

All around him, people were scribbling down notes after they dropped their stones in to the water. And Mason? Well, he was just standing there, staring at the already flat surface after he had dropped the first one. He had not seen anything. Atleast that's what he thought. He wasn't even sure where he should look at and the text book wasn't helping either.

And then the giant squid came out of the depths of the water and Mason's mouth fell open slightly as he looked at the creature. Aaaand stepping a little bit closer to land. He had heard about the squid but had never actually seen it. The creature did not seem to harm anyone so the sixth year got back to the task at hand and dropped the second stone in to the water. Having already forgotten that there should have been a 30 second wait in between.

The water splashed and then ripled, but that was all he saw. Frustration ran through him. Why was it that everyone else seemed to see shapes in the water and he did not?! It took all of his willpower not to throw the third stone far away.

It was a bit hard to concentrate given Mr. Henry and that one student being extremely disrespectful and Junia couldn't help but wonder again about all the distractions and disturbances making her readings meaningless. Still, she only had one stone left and she might as well finish the activity.

She ran a finger over the smooth square stone and then let it drop into the water, watching the surface carefully for any shapes that appeared. After a moment, something resembling a cloud did and the third year tilted her head. Hm. That was different. A cloud. A cloud had to be something good, right? Or...well, clouds could mean rain, too. Rain wasn't always a good thing.

...Maybe she should go consult her book now that she was done. Yeah, she was going to do just that.

Once back on shore, the thirteen year old quickly scribbled down which shapes she'd seen for which stone and then, looking up their possible meanings. Every now and then she looked over to see what the giant squid was up to, but other than that, she was focusing.

part 2

Tempted as she was to approach the squid and maybe even touch it, Kitty's cautious side won over and she decided to ignore it for now - or at the very least to finish her Divination first. But what shape exactly had the stones taken? At first it looked like abstract art to her, but bending closer she thought she could make out a horse. Yeah - a horse, or at least a horse's head. Was that a symbol in the book?

Kitty waded out of the water and moved to a dry spot by her socks to check on the textbook. First she made sure her socks were okay, and they were. Then humming merrily out loud as she watched the quid out of the corner of her eye, Kitty opened the book and flipped to the section starting with the letter 'H'. Horse was there! So was horse's head.

"A lover??" Her eyes widened as she read the interpretation. Instinctively her gaze travelled to the one boy at Hogwarts she had a crush on, also one of the only boys that she knew she'd get in trouble with a friend if she revealed he was her crush. She looked away quickly in case he saw her looking.

DH Vixen 01-13-2017 02:55 PM

Zara glanced around as she made her way back to her mat and her notebook. Everyone seemed to be busy writing things and still dropping their stones. A sinking feeling that maybe she had done her reading incorrectly started to settle over her. She had felt something was wrong before, but it was a bit too late to go back and change it now. The only course of action would be for her to just continue on as she was and hope for the best.

Divination was open for interpretation, right?

Settling down on her mat, she pulled her notebook and textbook out. Flipping through the pages, she jotted down what she thought she saw and what it could mean.
Quote:

  1. bell -unexpected news
  2. cloud - troubles, dots means more problems
  3. wavy lines - large body of water; lake, river or ocean

Frowning a bit, Zara looked back out at the water in thought. She was even more confused by what she saw and what it meant now. Was there some troubling news coming her way that involved a large body of water?

Tim glanced over at Nat's cauldron and shrugged a little. "It'll be making more ripples than it should be, but I'm sure it won't be too hard to decipher," She scribbled the last few ripples onto her paper and waited the usual thirty second before dropping in the last stone. Tim bent down a little to take a closer look at what was forming. She frowned a little and drew the figures on her notebook, knowing this wasn't going to be so easy to figure out. Once all the ripples were gone, Tim picked up the stone and walked back to her spot. Using a drying charms on her feet and jeans, the Gryffindor sat quietly and began going through her textbook for an answer. 'Hm, this looks like this thing. But it also can look like this one,' Tim thought to herself as she drew two figures on a separate sheet of paper. Lifting her head up, she eyes looked at other students and wondered if they were having a hard time like her. Nonetheless, she managed to finally figure out what she had gotten. "Oh! I've got a tower!" She said, going through her book once again to see what it meant. Hmm. "It means a large, metropolitan area...? Like I'll be moving there or visiting?" Tim wasn't completely sure but she wasn't going to find out just yet. Maybe she'll go to America over summer again. Except to a bigger city.My second one says it's a bear on all fours. Which means powerful helpful from someone," Tim raised an eyebrow at this. Wasn't she the one who usually was helping people? Either way, she wouldn't mind help in soemthing soon. "My third one says a spider, which means reward for work," Like being rewarded for just school work or maybe something in university? Either way, the tower had confused her the most. Will she really go traveling soon?

Okay, he needed to get back to shore before he FORGOT what his symbols were...sooooooooooooooo...

Stumbling and almost slipping - which would have meant that he would have gone UNDER the water - Derf quickly made his way back to shore and emerged from the lake completely soaked. Just a side effect of going all the way in up to your chin, you know?

Bogged down by his now heavy robes, he waddled over to his things and grabbed his textbook. Prooooooobably should have done SOMETHING about all the water, because now he was dripping all over his textbook and pages were sticking together and it was becoming a right mess just turning pages. Turning...tearing...they were rather synonymous at the moment.

"Ciiiiiiiiiiiiircle..." he said to himself as he scanned the meanings. "Ciiiiiiiiiiircllllle...FOUND IT! Succes-s-s-ss... completion...with dot-ss mean-ss a baby....OH! Maybe I am a -sseahors-se too..." Was there a spell for that sort of thing? Maybe he should go ask the healer. Just for curiosity's sake. Yes, mental note made.

And...what had the other one been? Which technically counted as TWO because both rocks had made it.... "Wavy lines-s....large body of water such as a lake, river or ocean..."

And then his bright blue eyes WIDENED like an OWL'S in disbelief and WONDER.

HOLY FLAMING SALAMANDERS! HOW DID THE ROCKS KNOOOOOOOOOOW?!

"PROFES-S-SSOR VANCE!" Derf chirped, jumping up and down in place and waving his arms excitedly. "FEY KNEW! THE ROCKS-S KNEW! FEW PREDICTED I WOULD FIND S-S-SUCCES-S-S-S-S-S AT THE BLACK LAKE AND I DID! ONE OF MY LIFE'S-S-S AMBITIONS-S OF MEETING BARTHOLOMEW HENRY CAME TRUE!"

SO NEATO!

Either way, she wouldn't mind help in something soon. "My third one says a spider, which means reward for work," Like being rewarded for just school work or maybe something in university? Either way, the tower had confused her the most. Will she really go traveling soon?

Her eyes lifted as Tim started to talk about her findings. "You are going to leave me for a big city aren't you? Is this your way of breaking up with me Tim?" She was fully grinning playfully as she tried to dramatically pout. Her second one was kind of cool though a powerful help, it was nice to know someone would help her best friend if she needed it. Merlin knew Tim had helped her many times. "Those are really good ones. Seems like whatever you are going to do it is going to be positive."

Now to finish hers she had been laughing so hard over the ring that she didn't look at anything else. "So I had a plane for my first stone and that looks like I''m taking a long distance journey." Which was interesting since she had been told she would have to go to Australia to talk to the MLE there. Looking at her next one she flipped through the book, "Oh what the bloody hell! Children? There is no way in hell this is right." Why couldn't a teddy bear mean snuggles or something. The only kid she even was close to was Zev and she saw Gaia once in awhile. "I had to have read that wrong or saw it wrong. The last stone was that stupid ring and that means marriage. I don't want either of those. "

Ewww, just eww. She wasn't liking this reading at all.

Even though Skylar's trousers were already cuffed to her knees and her shoes and socks were off, it took the third year a bit to get going because she had OTHER things to prepare. Like casting impervius on her notebook because she didn't want to have to remember what shapes she noted, in addition to what steps to do next. Yea, lots to remember and any help possible would be great.

Once she was all set with waterproofing her notebook, the third year carried that with her three stones balanced on top of it, as she slowly made her way out into the water. Last thing she needed was to accidentally drop the wrong stone. She struggled enough with Divination as it was, so accidentally dropping the square one before the round might mean poor results. Once she felt far enough out and away from her peers in such a way that their stone drops wouldn't interfere with her own, Sky felt she was ready. Round stone first. Carefully juggling her notebook with the stones on top, holding it steady in her left hand, the third year picked up the round stone first with her right hand and dropped it... and watched the ripples ...

Ironically the round stone seemed to form circular ripples in the water and Sky wondered if this was due to the stone being round? She'd have to compare notes with her peers later to see how genuine this might be....

Triangular stone next. Picking it up with her right hand, she let it drop. Duck lips? It kind of looked like that? Huh, weird. Soon she'd head back to the grounds and research in her textbook what these shapes meant, but for now she was merely just taking it all in what shapes she noted. Tilting her head in deep thought, Sky hadn't noticed that her left hand holding her notebook also tilted just enough that the final stone - the square one - slid off her notebook and made a *plop* into the waters.... She glanced over just enough time to see rings / beads echoing on repeat ... much similar to the way they are on that counting thing, uh, what was that called? An abacus?

So with her stones all dropped and what she thought she might be the shapes she'd seen, Skylar waded back to the ground to write them down more neatly along with researching in her textbook for an adequate interpretation.

Quote:

CIRCLE - success, completion; with dots means a baby

DUCK - news or message regarding finances; if more than one duck, profitable undertakings.

ABACUS - pay close attention to finances; something's not adding up.
Uh. Were there dots with her circle? She couldn't remember but for the love of Merlin, she HOPED NOT. Cause she was only thirteen. Unless the baby reference was talking about her big sister being pregnant, because that would have been different. Although the success and completion course seemed an okay track to be on, so she'd just say that there were no dots. Yup.

Also, what was up with her finances? Duck first, then an abacus? What wasn't adding up? Again, she was only thirteen and definitely not managing her own finances, so maybe that was what wasn't adding up. How bizarre a reading and it definitely made her wonder how far into this future this reading might extend? Premonitions, perhaps? See this was why Arithmancy made more sense; at least Arithmancy put a number on what age one might expect to see things... Divination was just like 'this will happen, but we're not going to tell you when'. It was just sooooo confusing and hypothetical, it seemed. Sigh.

No…it wasn’t a circle per say. Maybe an oval or an egg-shaped thing. Whatever the case, she made a mental note of it, figuring maybe her textbook would hold answers to possibilities. Then Cass decided to move onto the next stone since more than 30 seconds had passed. In went the triangle stone and Cassie did her best to try and decipher what it could possibly be quicker than before. Was it an infinity? Now, it had more detail…like a shoe?! Geez the fourth year didn’t think water ripples could be so different. It had to be the technique and what had been done to the stones.

Now there was one stone left and when the 30 seconds were up, Cass dropped the square stone in just as she had done its companions, watching the water with interest. Eh…that was…that was… a hat? The fourth year hoped there was something to go with that in the textbook else she wasn’t sure what it could be otherwise. She just shook her head and waded back towards shore, extra careful of disturbing the Giant Squid that had popped up earlier. Not her fault the professor had suggested they do it in the lake.

Casting a hot-air charm on her legs and feet, she was dried up nicely by the time she made it to her stuff, taking a seat so she could work more relaxed. The Ravenclaw then opened up her textbook, turning to the appropriate pages as she jotted down what she had seen. Each item she had thought she had possibly seen in the ripples thankfully had an entry so she jotted that down in her notes as well.

SPOILER!!: Notes

Round Stone – Egg
Triangle stone – shoe
Square stone – hat

Interpretations:

Egg = Good Omen, which was always good to get in a prediction. Who wants something bad to happen?
Shoe = Change for the better. That could be just about anything.
Hat = Improvement, especially in job. Well I don’t have a job, unless you counted being a student. So improvement might be doing well in points for the term or something.

So much for something clear.

Its a kind of divination, Oh Mr Bartholomew Henry I haven't dropped my stones in yet - do YOU want to have a go? We can figure out your future! I'll let you use mine!" Char extended her hand with the stones in them in offer.

Professor Vance was still near Charlotte Kettleburn when she overheard what the lioness said to the giant squid. With raised brows she pointedly said eyes on Charlotte. "I hope you mean that theoretically Charlotte because skinny dipping in the lake is against the school rules, and if groundskeeper McLeod caught you doing that you'd be in detention quicker than you could say Gryffindor."

Laurel was near Leesha of the snakes when the girl started to yell that she was stupid and that the whole lesson was fake and stupid. It was disrespectful and rude and more that ran through Professor Vance's head as she marched over and stopped in front of the girl and stared her straight into her eyes with a stern look on her face. "Ms Griffel, that is 30 points from Slytherin for your blatant rudeness and disrespect of this class and me! I don't tolerate that any student talks to me in that manner. It is not appropriate behaviour and you should really think over how you address professors in the future. If you continue to disrespect professors and school subjects then you will not only lose house points but you will also earn yourself a detention and a meeting with headmistress Hawthorne." Bubbling with irritation, Laurel glanced down at her watch, it was soon time to wrap up the lesson.

SO NEATO!

Her head still bubbling with irritation and thoughts that one shouldn't say out loud Laurel almost tripped over her own feet as Derf's sudden loud chirping caught her off guard. Quickly plastering on a smile and finding some happiness deep down, Professor Vance looked over at the badger youth that was jumping up and down in place on the sand several meters away from her. "How exciting Derfael! Fun for you, it really shows that what the readings predict of the future really can come true! I hope more of your life ambitions will come true."

****
Glancing down at her watch again Laurel brought out her wand and cast a sonorus charm on her voice so that it could be heard by those students still out in the water. "All right class, it's time to come up out off the water and record your last stone interpretations! You've all done wonderfully today and I hope that what your hydromatic readings have predicted of your futures will come true." The good things of course, not any bad things.

Professor Vance let her eyes run over the students as she continued speaking. "Class is dismissed! You are all free to go up to the castle and go get cleaned up and get a little break in your dorms before dinner. Feel free to grab some extra stones on your way up if you want to do some hydromatic readings on another day with your potion cauldrons."

Ooc: Class is dismissed! Thank you all so much for coming to class and playing with me and making it fun!:glomp: I will leave the class thread open until around 2 pm GMT +1 tomorrow so that you all can have your characters leave.

XD (couldn't resist)

Simon had been just quietly going on with his work, yeah there was nothing to see here at all. Simon instead of doing any work had just been playing around with the stones. Hey that was what they were there for right. Grabbing a couple of stones he smiled as he looked at the Professor.

"Thanks Professor" Simon thought about calling the Professor old but decided against it. He then turned to the Professor. "I have learnt a lot more about how to make a rock skip across the water." Simon had no idea what a reading was.

"Oh and if I want to do some reading, I'll grab a book. I don't think a rock would make a great bedtime story, for some reason." Simon pocked a couple of rocks though, they be good for a few other things.

Catch up and goodbye!

After dropping the first stone (the round one) in the water, Olivia focused on the shape of the ripples. Hmmm... She couldn't exactly see a shape at first. She blinked a few more times, putting more energy into it. The ripples represented either a coin, a clock, or a circle perhaps? But then again, maybe a circle was being too literal. Come on. Try to see it. No. It was definitely looked more like a wheel. Yes. A WHEEL. Was it broken or complete? Still complete.

Then Olivia dropped the next stone. It was the triangular one. This one when it dropped. It looked like a triangle at first but soon it spread out more to become more like a fan. Interesting. She wrote that one down. Fan... Flirtation.

The final one was the easiest. The square one was dropped. House? Envelope? Cup? Chair? Perhaps bread? Olivia blinked. NO. It was definitely an envelope.

Wading her way back to shore, she opened her textbook and tried to find the images that she had seen. Complete wheel, fan, and envelope. What could they possibly mean? The first had been a wheel which meant fortune (as it was complete). The second was a fan. Flirtation. She glanced up from her book briefly before staring strangely at it. That was a demented idea. She was terrible at flirting. The third was an envelope. She blinked. Hmm.. Was important news on the way? Was Simon writing her a letter at this precise moment?

SPOILER!!: notebook

COMPLETE WHEEL- FORTUNE
Good fortune was headed her way.
FAN- FLIRTATION
flirtation

ENVELOPE- NEWS
Important news

Closing her textbook and notebook, she contemplated the meaning of all three rocks further. Interesting She slipped them into her bag. No. She had to stop thinking of what they meant. She probably read the rocks wrong anyway. Silly girl, she thought. "Thanks Professor!" she said with a smile and headed back towards the castle with her thoughts geared towards what news could possibly be headed her way. Fortune. Flirtation. News. She was confused.
