Default DADA Lesson One - Fianto Duri

As always with Professor Hirsch's style, the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom wasn't set up like your everyday classroom. Anyone who's been taught by the man long enough might know that he just doesn't structure his lessons in that kind of format. Not when the subject asked for so much physical activity.

This lesson was no different: the classroom was empty of desks, chairs and any other indication that it was an actual classroom. In fact, the only part of the actual classroom that seemed to have survived this sweep is the large board on one side of the large room. Instead, some cushions and mats have been placed on the floor near the board for people to lounge sit on.

The only indication as to what the lesson could be about can be found on the other side of the classroom, opposite from the board. A few long tables line that section of the room with a cloth covering the oddly-shaped items underneath. Want to take a peek? Sorry, kid, the large bubble surrounding the tables just won't let you do that. You might even get a tiny zap from it, if you try to.

Constant vigilance, anyone?

Professor Hirsch can be found standing near the board and his desk. His arms are crossed across his chest, his legs crossed at the ankles and a small, amused smile playing on his lips.

So come in, grab a cushion, and wait for the lesson to begin.

class progression:
- What is the most frustrating part about spellcasting?
- What does Fianto Duri do and what spells would it work with?
- MINI ACTIVITY: Practice how to cast Protego + Fianto Duri
- MAIN ACTIVITY: FOOD FIGHT!
- That's all, folks!

OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Class will continue tomorrow (late eveningtime GMT) Class has officially started but you're more than free to jump in if you want to! Just pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time. Hope you have fun! ^^

a bit of madness is key | miss chanandler bong | those cunning folks use any means

Carlton was excited. He ran to the other side of the room and dropped his heavy bag there before running back to his original spot. The professor had told him to wiggle. So he wiggled a bit.

Wiggle, wiggle wiggle.

"Shake out those muscles"? Carlton didn't have any of those. But he lifted his leg in the air and wiggled it a bit, before doing the same procedure to the other leg. A little wiggle of the arms for a few seconds would have to do before he bent down and picked up his wand off the floor.

He glanced over at the board. Protego. That wasn't too hard of a word to pronounce, hopefully it wasn't difficult to cast either. He cleared his throat, wiggling his body a bit more into a comfortable standing position. Professor Myers had told him to first practise the pronunciation and then the wand movement. And then he would "Show his wand who was in control" as professor Hirsch had told him to. Uh-huh, who was in control? Carlton was!

...

Or he would be after he learned this neat spells.

"Protego." He said out loud. Well. He wasn't an expert but he thought it sounded alright. He could actually pass as a wizard soon. "Protego. Boom." Personally he thought the sound effect made it a little more spicy!

And theeen, what was the other spell again? Fanto Dario? No. Not even close. He looked over at the board. "Fee-AAAAHN-toe..." He giggled. Toe. "Fee-AAAHN-toe DYOUUU-weeee!"

Yeah, that didn't sound quite right. He would have to practice that a bit more before moving onto wand movement and actually casting the spell.

After notes were taken, Junia got up and wiggled her body, if only a little bit. Her things were then moved aside to give her room to work and she was good to go. Truthfully, she was just thankful that they were moving on to the practical portion of the lesson. Anything she could throw herself into as a distraction was definitely something she was looking forward to. Definitely. She'd probably also need to find someone to test out her shield once she'd successfully combined spells, yes? Best find that someone first.

"Would anyone want to partner up to test shields?" They could use paper balls so that none of their more important items got ruined in the process, too.

While she waited for an answer, the third year got to work on producing a worthy shield spell. It was a bit more difficult in that there was no real threat and so Junia found herself using her imagination so she could still create a strong one. One that she could be proud of.

"Protego!" Followed by the new spell which...was...what again? Oh merlin. ...yeah, she should probably know that first. Ending her shield spell, she took a moment to glance at the board again.

Fianto Duri...Fianto Duri...Fianto Duri...Okay, she had it.

Round 2.

"Protego!" She concentrated and then added, "Fianto Duri!"

Brent listened to the professor's response. Well, ... that was sort of what he had been talking about. Only backwards. He had meant you could keeping the levitation going with your wand while using Fianto Duri for something else. Oh, well. Either way it went, he wasn't on to the right answer anyway. He followed along with the rest of the discussion then turned his attention to what was on the board.

Brent always paid attention in Defense class.

Then it was time to get up and going, which got Brent's adrenaline rushing again. AWESOME. This is the part of Defense class he liked the most--getting out there and going to battle! He stood up and stretched his arms then moved his bag to the side. Seeing as he was a fourth year, he had the Shield Charm down the pat. Raising his wand then making a straight, vertical line through the air, he called out a strong, "Protego!" His shield stretched out around him, protecting him from...well, basically nothing right now.

Colt beamed when the Professor noticed his question. He never thought to add two spells at a time but Hirsch said it was possible. He grinned and began to copy down the notes when the professor was done with the question. He got his notebook and began to scribble with his quill and once he was finished. He began to review a bit. So Fianto Duri could enhance the protective spells? Clearly and you could also multi task. This is gonna be an awesome spell to use in dueling club that's for sure. He was itching to practice this now.

Aawww yeah. Time to get to the practical side of the lesson. He got up and straightened his legs and what not. He even stretched his back and heard a little pop. Man he seemed a bit tense which was understandable, these seats weren't comfy anyways. He got out his wand like Hirsch instructed and got into position. So he needed to cast his shield charm up first and then cast Fianto Duri to make it stable? Sounds easy enough right? He wondered what spell he could use? He saw to use Protego but he could challenge himself with Protego Maxima and such...

He thought about it and decided with protego for now. He didn't want to be that much of a show off. He closed his eyes and cleared his mind. Once he got it and tuned out all the distractions, he held his wand out and said, "Protego!" and he saw nothing too much but then pointed his wand and said, "Fianto Duri!" and it stayed put but then disintegrated. Hmm...that was unusual?

Obviously he would have to try again. He even looked at objects he would throw around. Unless he wanted to use a buddy to throw objects at him. He began to look around for both aspects.

James watched as the other students went to find partners of their own to practice with. A younger girl seemed to need one and so he walked towards her. "Hey, you need a partner?" He asked casually to the girl. James wasn't picky. He just wanted to practice some simple spells first before getting to the hard part. Shielding charm wasn't hard to do, right?

Her smile grew as the professor said she was correct. The man was her mentor for the past two terms and doing well in front of him meant the world to her. She listened very close as he explained what they were doing and what the wand movement was. She even wrote a few notes down.

Getting up and putting her things to the side she didn't think this would be very hard. She had taken her lessons from Hirsch himself the last term. The shield, of course, was first. "Protego" Sheild was up and now she just had to do the other spell, right?

Her wand pointed and doing the movement, "Fianto Duri!"

Easy as that, yes?

Noelle always did that. It was one of the first things she learned. she twirled her wand. The shield charm was an easy for her. It was one of her better spells. It was also one of the first spells that Noelle was taught. Henric taught it to her outside the classroom. So casting it wasnt hard. "Protego" Noelle murmured and the held her wand straight. Now... Fianto Duri.

Noelle breathed out before casting that spell. "Fianto Duri." Professor Hirsch was right. You didnt need much effort casting that spell. She was really surprised when it worked. The bluish white translucent color showed on the shield that was present in front of her.

Noelle beamed and looked over at Olly. Her attention made the spell go awa. That was that concentration she needed to work on. "How'd you do?" She asked him. She had seen the flicker of color since they were practically shoulder to shoulder but she had been concentrating on her own spell. "How about you try it this time and I watch? Then ill throw something in your shield to see if it truly worked.'

Noelle was already doing better than him. At least she had been able to cast a proper shield charm, even if it had fallen when she looked at him. The point of this Fianto Duri was that she should be able to turn her focus to him but keep the shield up? Right? He still wanted to be positive that he was understanding it because there had been such initial confusion.

"I'm not very good at the shield charm," he admitted. He had read once that even adult wizards sometimes had trouble with it so he didn't really feel too bad about it, but he still wished he could do it properly. Most others seemed to be doing just fine. And he didn't want to hold Noelle back by his own inability to do a proper shield charm. He would just have to try again.

"Protego!" He was concentrating really hard and thinking about how he really wanted to be able to do it. The shield appeared again, still a bit weak like it had been last time but hey, it was there and that was all that mattered at the moment. He turned to smile at Noelle in triumph but lost it as soon as his attention shifted slightly. "Dang it. You try and I'll throw something through your shield to see if you got it." Which he was sure she would because Noelle was brilliant and amazing.

She’d hoped for some kind of delighted praise like some other students had been receiving, or at least an acknowledgement of a fair answer. What she got, though, was Professor Hirsch regarding her like she’d suddenly announced her intentions to murder someone. What was the problem?

After a long pause, he began an answer with what seemed like some difficulty. So she hadn’t been wrong, then- but-
“Dangerous and horrifying?!” she echoed, with some alarm. With a distinct sense of alarm, it occurred to Sinead that she may not have fully understood the effects of the spell. Or, like- at all, really. Biting her lip, she tried to look subtly through her textbook as the Professor paused a moment and then spoke again. There was another long silence as she scanned the glossary, before slowly looking back up at the Professor, a deep flush overtaking her face. She could hardly admit to not having known what the spell was (for reasons of pride, if nothing else), but…

This was absolutely the worst first impression she could have made. Not for the first or last time, she cursed her luck at having a half-muggle, half-wizard upbringing, desperately trying to think of something to say to the Professor and, most of all, trying extremely hard not to cry.
“Um- yes, Professor. I just… wondered.” She tailed off lamely, ducking her head, and tried to go unnoticed for the next part of the lesson, burying her face in her notes.

It was the first lesson where Sinead had ever been reluctant to move on to the practical portion, but hopefully the professor would be busy and she wouldn’t have to face him again straight away. In the mean time, she stacked her things neatly at the side of the room and, centering herself with a deep breath, began to rehearse the incantation and wandwork under her breath. She’d read all up on Shield Charms, of course, but never actually cast one before- that wasn’t going to stop her, though.

Feeling she was ready after a couple of minutes, she spoke the incantation aloud- and sure enough, a faint shimmer burst through the air before her. Unfortunately, it dissipated almost straight away, and Sinead could feel her awareness of the spell fading with it.

Not exactly the effect she was after.

So, she needed to stay more focused on maintaining it? Maybe she’d been so keen just for the spell to work in the first place, she hadn’t followed through properly. Trying again, she managed to keep a wavering shield for a couple of seconds before it faded away. An improvement- but she could hardly cast Fianto Duri without a strong shield to start. Looking around again, she wondered if there might be somebody who could give her a few pointers on the spell- difficult as it was to ask for help, this was clearly a bit more advanced than other magic she’d been working on- and maybe pair up to test their barriers afterwards.

THIS sounded like an extremely handy spell to know, and Katy's brain was already churning through ideas about how to use it. Like really, any product or invention that needed a one time spell to be managed over time... right?

Oh, practical! Katy stood, shifting her bag away from the center of the room. She pointed, considered, and then turned to the professor. She wasn't her cousin, but maybe he liked students other than Kettleburns? "What's the duration of the spell? Like maximum duration? Is it possible it will continue indefinitely, or does it burn out?"

But anyway. Katy pointed her wand at the air immediately in front of her. "Protego." Easy enough, right?

Default Anyone?

Dora raised an eyebrow as she listened to her classmates continue on. This was dead boring when they all said the same thing. But hey, had to be right, yeah?

Yeah. Hirsch said so.

But as the man continued and said they could practice wandwork, her eyes landed on Mason . She could help him, of he'd let her. Yeah she punched him in the nose and cast jellyfingers on him... but he just wasn't listening. Maybe he would from now on? Heh.

But as I stood, she rose from her cushion and drew her wand. With the proper wand movement, she spoke, "Protego! " She had, after all, mastered the spell in 3rd year... so that part was pretty easy.

Now if someone wanted to partner with her, she had an idea of things to send at the opposites shield. Hehe.

Dueling was a battle of wits, hey? Hmm.. She liked the sound of that. It was certainly up her alley.

Olivia smiled at Professor Hircsh's comment on her response. And then she remained silent, scribbling down notes for the next part of class. Fianto Duri. fee-AHN-toe DYOU-ree? She repeated the word several times in her head, making sure to get the pronunciation correct. It was interesting that the spell gave you a chance to multi-task. So you could use protego and then another spell with this. Intriguing. It would certainly come in handy.

SPOILER!!: notebook!
Fianto Duri
Pronunciation:fee-AHN-toe DYOU-ree
Wand movement: point of the wand

A spell that's used in conjunction with another spell to keep it "alive" and active, leaving you to do whatever it is you want/need to do. It gives you the chance to multitask and gives you the upper hand in a duel setting.

Works best with:
- Protego
- Concealment/Disillusionment Charms
- Locking Spells
- Crucio (NO ONE should be using this spell!)
- Lumos
- Fire spells
- Pretty much most charms

Doesn't work with:
- Moving a levitating object

Seeing that other students had already set about practicing. Olivia took at her wand, glancing down at it momentarily. Alright. It was time to cast Protego first. With a deep breath, she calmed her mind (as best as she could because she always had what felt to be a million and one things running through her mind) and spoke with the correct movement, "Protego!"

Now she needed to find a partner. Her eyes landed on Dora, the girl that she had spoken to on the train. "Hey Dora! Want to partner up?" she asked, grinning and waving at her fellow housemate. This would be fun!

Basically Zoryn blinked and all the sudden they moved from page three to chapter five hundred and seventy three.

Titled: WHAT THE HECK???
Subtitled: huh.

The Professor was saying SO MANY WORDS. And then there were so many words written. And then all of the words were starting to run around and jump on top of each other. And suddenly Zoryn was dead.

Only figuratively, of course. Because on the outside she was very much alive and very much lost. She sort of sat there with really big eyes and a really wide-open mouth, trying to remember all the instructions they were given but she could only remember the 'WAH WAH's.

At least she did happen to pick up the fact that they were meant to get up and move around? So that's what she did. She got up. And she began moving around. By running in place. And y'know what, she could totally do this ALL day. Mostly because she didn't know how to do the spells he wanted and practice didn't sound appealing. But running in place? That she could do.

She hadn’t even noticed that she’d been quiet. Of course, Elle normally was fairly quiet in lessons such as these, given she generally only took action when she was particularly piqued. She wasn’t in Dueling Club, and she hardly went around practicing spells randomly. Unless they involved herbology or healing, neither of which seemed relevant to the lesson at hand. Plus, she’d hardly expected the response her simple greeting had received. It had all equaled her only sitting there listening as the discussion had gone on, taking notes as quickly as she possibly could given the amount of information being provided.

Strengthening shields certainly seemed useful to her. At least by way of hopefully preventing injury. Not to mention it seemed fairly easy to accomplish, if it could be used in a multitasking situation. The concerns over spells dropping in the process of casting Fianto Duri made sense to her, and Professor Hirsch had done a good job of relieving that concern. She felt he had, anyway, as she’d set her notes down to get to her feet.

Should she challenge herself or just stick with the simple spells for now, until she was comfortable with the spell? It was something to consider, while she just stood with her wand in her hand loosely, thinking, both about her answer and all the requests for partners going on around her. Finally, she settled on the simple, looking around in case anyone wanted to join her before she began casting. “Protego!,” she cast, confident in her ability to cast a simple shield. It was only after then that she pointed her wand again. “Fianto Duri!”

Was that a faint bluish tinge to the air around her? She couldn’t tell.

Sinead had tried again to cast Protego, and again it had worked- but still not as well as she could have hoped. Right now, the shield definitely wasn't lasting long enough for her to even attempt to cast Fianto Duri as well. Lowering her wand with a frown, she looked around the room once more and saw an older girl creating a shield without hesitation. She looked vaguely familiar- from around the Common Room, Sinead guessed upon seeing her green-trimmed robes.

"Excuse me," she said somewhat uneasily as she approached Elle inbetween her casting. "Um- I haven't cast Protego before, and I was having some trouble making it last. Could you maybe give me some advice, please?- and then I can help you test your shield...?"
She wasn't exactly one to jump out and make new friends, but neither was she about to let this lesson pass her by because she never plucked up the courage to ask for help.

Scary weapon? Er. "That depends on the intent. If you're intending to use it in an offensive way, to cast dark magic at someone, it'll be worse than if you're just trying to defend yourself or your home." Shrug. "I'm glad you mentioned what happens when something goes past the barrier. Poof is correct! Well done!" Better terminology was needed but he'd accept it.
The ironic thing, professor, is that his fwooper wand core actually came with the near-inability to cast Quietus...and likely Silencio would suffer the same fate. Not that the first year was aware of this information himself seeing as he had not done his research on his core just yet.

But to the professor's initial reply, the blonde's blue eyes widened. We? Was he already being told that he needed private tutoring? NEAT! Or...was it more....neat?

And then he was shaking his head a bit, because that had not been what he had meant - casting the shield spell and then shooting off others. "I meant more the POOF effect made it kind of like a weapon," he clarified. Because once you disintegrates...well...there was no coming back from that, right? "How come your s-s-spell zapped ins-stead? Intent?"

Important clarification point for the young man...who was now having thoughts about his fingers disintegrating on accident when touching someone's shield...or his own...

It was HARD keeping up with note taking, but Derf managed...ish...and was starting to think that Gryffindor Pizza Boy Blaise Bellaire was on to something really REALLY smart with his quill. He was pretty sure mum and dad wouldn't approve of that though...insist that he would learn better by doing it all himself. Which...yeah...actually...he did agree with. But professors were giving out SO much information and his brain just wasn't spongey enough to soak it all up.

....wibble....

But it DID absorb the next set of instructions! Which meant that his wand was out and he was to his feet speed walking around to find himself some space. Protego...he could probably manage that one without any sort of disaster. Upon flapping and stretching his arms a little, Derf set to practicing the first of the spells until he felt confident enough to give it a go - on himself, yeah?

He was just about to cast it when he spotted Zoryn...running in place...so he made his way over to her and joined in. "Pssssssssst," he whispered. "Practice wiff me?"

Janelle took notes, as her classmates and Professor Hirsch spoke. Anything that would enhance her spellwork, was extremely welcome. The fact that it didn't require a great deal of concentration was even better. When the specific details appeared on the board, Janelle copied them quickly.

And now it was time to practice. Janelle stood up, as instructed and gave her muscles a little stretch. Feeling loose and ready to go, she moved her bag out of the way. First though, she had some additional information to write down. Of course she needed the incantation and wand movement for the record. Once done, Janelle decided to practice the incantation a few times. "Fee-AHN-Toe Dyou-Ree, Fee-AHN-Toe Dyou-ree, Fianto Duri", she said softly to herself. Since the wand movement was a simple point, there was no need to practice that.

Now it was time to put the practice to use. Janelle was ready to start with the Shield Charm. That was something she could do in her sleep. Well maybe not in her sleep, but she was pretty confident about her ability to perform that spell. Wand at the ready, she made the required movement and said, "Protego". With her Shield in place, Janelle focused on maintaining her concentration. Now she had to multitask. With a quick point of the wand, she added, "Fianto Duri". Janelle saw her Shield turn bluish white, as the professor had described. She'd done it! Whether it was effective or not was another story entirely. Janelle needed someone to help test her shield. "Finite", she said, to end the spells. She could use the practice, so she'd need to try again. First, she looked around for someone she might partner up with so they could test each other's shields.

It seemed as if most students were busy practicing or already had partners. Janelle saw one person who seemed ready for something to be thrown at their shield. Shrugging her shoulders, she thought, why not? Janelle walked over to the Head Girl and made her pitch. "Do you need someone to test out your shield? We could take turns testing each others'. All she could do was say no, right?

"Finite" At first not knowing if it was a clumsy first year or not she didn't want them walking into her shield. That would have been disastrous, but soon she realized it was a fellow seventh year.

"Oh hey Janelle." Smiling she nodded, "Sure we can do that. What should we throw at it, though?" Her thoughts went to her bag. "I have some chocolate frogs in my bag we could probably use." Walking over she bent down and pulled a few out. She had plenty so it wasn't a big deal to use them for this. Though would that be considered chocolate abuse?

Looking back at the Ravenclaw she held up the frogs, "Want to do yours first?"

Okay. So this was just really complicated. Harriet blinked as she listened to Professor Hirsch. Well actually it didn't help that she was getting a little distracted by how pretty the professor was. That wasn't helping her understand what he was talking about. But she made notes, so that hopefully she could re-read them and have a better understanding. She re-read the notes as she Professor let them go on with the mini-activity. She just wanted to make sure she knew what she was going.

They were casting two spells. That was pretty simple. She could do the protego charm. That was something she was confident with. the knew charm would be more difficult. But that was what practicing was for right? She could do this. She glanced over her notes, before getting ready to begin. She stood up from her cushion, and prepared herself.

Smiling, she cast "Protego" and hoped it worked.

"This depends on the situation, I'd say. If you're up against a dangerous creature or a dark witch or wizard, overkill is better than underkill. Take them out completely rather than leaving them with a papercut." Not that he was telling the boy to kill people, mind you. "But what you need to learn is control. You're good at magic, just try to control it and let it out when you need to."
<snip>

Moving on? Moving on.

"That was an interesting array of answers, I have to say. It seems as though most of you have trouble concentrating on the spells themselves with intent being a problem and thinking on the spot being another." Good. Very good. "They might be problems that set you back and make you feel like you can't duel but they're problems that everyone shares." Bright side?

"There are some special cases that need something extra but mostly, practice will help you. Practice and agility. Sometimes, if you're very good with a spell, you'll find that the spell will come as naturally to you as breathing does. You won't need to concentrate as much, it'll just happen. A student of mine," Not going to name names but she would definitely know who she is. "is very good with the Featherlight Charm. Exceptional, even. To her, this spell is almost like second nature. If you can get a spell to be like that for you, always use it to your advantage. If you have a bunch of spells that can be like that for you, your opponent doesn't stand much of a chance."

He was rambling. Reel it in, Hirsch.

"But! I was looking for another answer that none of you mentioned." Not a big deal, really. "What about spells that require your fullest concentration? Or require you to keep your wand up and pointed and it means that you can't cast any other spell until you get rid of the one you're casting? What happens then?"

At those words, Hirsch smirked slightly before turning around and writing two words on the board behind him. Just the two.

"Fianto Duri," he started, turning back towards the students again, "is a very useful spell to overcome the problem I was just talking about. Can anyone tell me what it does specifically?" He'd practically given away the answer at this point. "Or! Tell me what spell it'd work well with." Come on, let's get those minds working some more.

OOC: EEEEEEEE! Those were some great answers! <3 I hope that post made sense! *apologises for his rambling*

The question is simple and is two-fold: what does Fianto Duri do and what spell would it work well with? Super simple. Feel free to answer one or both questions, I don't mind. Try to be as creative as possible please ^^

I'll move the class on tomorrow at roughly 8pm GMT........ or when I get back from uni.

Thank you!

See this is why Hirsch is one of his favorite Professors EVER-- the man just gets him, like totally. The Curly Top understood what he meant, it was another way of being safe than being sorry. The boy is aware of that. But yes control that part is still a work in progress, and its a long ways to go...

And Fianto Duri.....ok he's heard of that, but it wasnt the most common spell that was uttered around his presence so the Curly Top wasnt sure exactly what it was or what it was good with. Nuninuninu still listening....

Keep things moving, don't let them get bored or too complacent. "Excellent round of answers! Most of you have gotten the gist of the spell down correctly and can tell me exactly what it does and what spells work well with it. Really well done." He was pleased, see.

"If you didn't catch the answers," Why not? "Fianto Duri strengthens a spell and keeps it alive, in a sense, leaving you free to do whatever else you want, whether it's casting another spell, buying yourself some time or taking a nap. As Miss Phillips and Miss Valentine have mentioned, it's a spell that's used on the castle and has been during the Battle of Hogwarts. It has enhanced the protective shields that protect us from dark forces." Interesting information, wasn't it? Hirsch certainly thought so.

"Mr Thomas-Borzekowski raised a good point: if you're casting a spell that requires your fullest attention, how can you cast this new spell? WELL." Dramatic pause, anyone? "While Fianto Duri is technically a spell on its own, it acts more as an enhancement of the spell you're working on and trying to keep alive. A companion spell or reinforcement, even. You don't need to pay a lot of focus on it to make it work: as long as you're concentrating on the first spell and say the correct words, it should work."

And with that, he turned around and waved his wand at the board behind him. A few more notes scribbled themselves on there: notes that were taken from the students's mouths themselves.

When that was written up, the Ravenclaw Head of House turned back to everyone and started, "Okay, that's enough talking! Everyone, get up and do a little wiggle. Shake up the muscles. Put your bags and things to one side: you're not going to need it anymore." Cue a small pause while he waited for everyone to do just that while he swept all the cushions and mats to one side.

There. Perfect.

"I want everyone to take out their wands and first practice how to cast the spell. We're going to use it with the Shield Charm," Which was conveniently underlined. "So firstly, cast the Shield Charm and once you have your charm up, use Fianto Duri to keep it in place. If you've done it correctly, you should see a blue-white translucent shield in front of you. Any object that tries to pass through this shield will disintegrate so, if you want to test it, I suggest using objects you don't really mind losing." He didn't want to hear any sob stories about someone's favourite poem on a parchment being turned to flakes.

"All the information you need is....."

Cue another wave of his wand at the board.

"....... there! I'll give you ten-to-fifteen minutes to practice before we move on to something a lot more exciting." Just look at that mysterious grin on the man's face. Sickening, wasn't it?

OOC: ........ This is a lot of info oh gosh I'm so sorry ;_____; The main info you need is in the "quoted" sections to make things easier.

Anyways MINI ACTIVITY TIME! The task is simple: practice how to cast Protego + Fianto Duri. If done correctly, there should be a blue-white translucent shield that disintegrates objects that passes through it. Basically, have fun getting your charries to try it out and chuck whatever they want at it. Just don't chuck PEOPLE through the shield: I will not be a happy unicorn.

I'm going to give you guys until the 17th of January, 11:59pm GMT/06:59pm EST to make as many posts as you want.

If you have any comments/questions/concerns, feel free to hit me up wherever you can find me. Enjoy! ^^

Oh! So thats what that does, and no wonder it sounded vaguely familiar, his dueling tutor said it a few times, but for obvious reasons that wasnt the focus of his sessions. And apparently it works beautifully with one of his favorite spells! Ohboyohboyohboy

He stood up and stretched a bit just as the Professor swept the mats away. Protego he had no problems with, so he really just needed to focus on the new spell. "Fianto..... Duri.....Fianto..... Duri...." Tenacius murmured several times as he alternately practiced the wandstroke. Visualize it yeah? That was important, specially to him being such a visual person.

And then he tried it out "ProtegoFiantoDuri." he uttered in quick succession. The Protego spell worked as expected, but just as he finished duri the shield vanished.

Aww nuts. Didnt work.

He was being all hasty-panicky, as he was wont to do when he's learning an upgrade spell, as this one sorta is. He murmured the spell a few more times, then murmured the shield charm before it "Protego.... Fianto.... Duri....." he repeated, getting the cadence to it, along with the wandstroke combination. Just trying to make it sound and feel like he's been doing it for yea--

-- and then it happened! There was that shimmery translucent shield right there asdfasdfadfasd.

His shock made him lose focus, and the shimmery shield vanished. "It worked aahh!!" he dancey-danced on the spot anyway.

One more time for luck...

"Protego Fianto Duri" he cast again, now with more confidence given his success. The shimmery shield reappeared, and the Curly Top stared amazed but still focused, he didnt want to lose it so easily this time. But now the question "Professor, can we lower our wand and just step back when Fianto Duri works? Or we need to keep our wands focused on the shield?"

Yay, she had a partner. Janelle watched as Natalia went into her bag and retrieved some chocolate frogs for shield practice. It seemed a terrible crime to send some perfectly good chocolate into oblivion, but Janelle didn't have any better ideas. "Great", she said. Taking out her wand, she added, "Sure, I don't mind going first."

Janelle took a moment to focus. Then she moved her wand, saying, "Protego". Without missing a beat, she pointed her wand at her shield. "Fianto Duri", she said with all of the confidence she could muster. The spell appeared to have worked a second time because the bluish white hue had returned.

Janelle addressed her partner, while maintaining her newly enhanced shield. "Ok Natalia, I'm ready. Give it a go.". Bye bye chocolate frog......she hoped.

Default partner, anyone? + question for the professor
Unforgivably Cursed | adultescent

Oh, Fianto Duri worked well with Protego? Henry was already pretty good with a shield charm, so that could prove extremely useful especially in duels. But it raised another question that he wasn't sure he heard the answer to. So once he got up from the mat and stretched his arms and legs a bit, he raised his hand to ask. "Professor, just how much longer does Fianto Duri make another spell last?" Was there a definitive time limit or was it one of those that needed to be consciously stopped. It would make a difference when it came to dueling, he thought.

Glancing around, he noticed a few people pairing up which he was definitely cool with. But he should probably practice the spell a few times on his own. Whoa... disintegrate? Hopefully no one took a step in the wrong direction and bumped into an enhanced shield. Moving to a more empty space of the room, Henry pointed his wand slightly above him and cast Protego. Another point of his wand at the already cast shield and he commanded, "Fianto Duri!"

"Protego! FIANTO DURI! " she said loudly and clearly as she squinted to see if the shield appeared. Hmmm. Could someone throw something at her?

And that is when she heard Olivia! Letting her Protego shield drop, she turned to smile at the younger girl. "Hey! Sure we can work together! Hey... do you know how to conjure birds or butterflies? " If not, then paper balls it was.

Hehe.

She could do this ALL day. Well, not all day. Probably not even for another hour, but she was still running for now and that's what mattered. So she kept running in place. Eyes on the prize: The end of the class period OR the moment where they got to punch stuff. Whichever came first to be honest.

But instead, she was whispered at.

Oh.

DERF!

"Hiiiiii!" she waved at him, still moving her feet up and down lots. "Okay! 'Cept I mostly forgot what we have to do," she shrugged as her feet came to an abrupt stop. Oh wait. Her plan was to not practice. Dang it. Derf had somehow managed to lure her out of her plan. She really needed to work on that. Oops.

Oh, well! Maybe practice could be fun too.

This was going to be fun and the fact that they were using chocolate frogs was interesting. She hated wasting them, but she had a big stash in her room. So really no worries.

She watched as Janelle did her shield charm with ease. She assumed this was going to be a super easy thing with two seventh years. Nat really lucked out getting her as a partner and not a first year. "Looks good" There was the correct colors at least. She watched for a few minutes before unwrapping one of the frogs.

Was it mean to let it hop to its own end?

With its only good hop, she allowed the chocolate frog to leap out of her hand and straight into the charm.

Junia frowned some when she noted that there was no blue-ish tint to her shield. That meant she'd need to try again, yeah? She could do that-would do that-and she'd get it right this time.

"Yeah, I could use one. Could you toss a couple paper balls at my shield once I get it up?" She looked at the older boy for a moment and then decided that yes, of course he could. While he got those ready, she'd throw up another shield.

"Protego!" Said clearly and with a little extra oomph this time because she now had an older boy as an audience. "Fianto Duri!" That...hey, that looked right! DID ANYONE SEE THIS?! Junia grinned but that quickly faded when she decided that over-excitement probably wasn't that cool. "Okay, I think I'm ready to test this one out!"
