Default Charms Lesson 1: Right Back at Ya!

It's a chilly late November morning at Hogwarts, but Professor Marchand has kept the classroom warmed with a heating charm. As you walk in, you find the professor leaning against the front wall watching his students as they arrive. As always, the refreshment table at the back of the classroom is full of tasty treats for you to enjoy. On today's menu: hot cocoa and fudge with bits of candy cane in it, just in time for the holiday season.

You'll soon notice that something is different about the classroom today. The desks are gone! In their place are two long benches along the left and right walls, and a large trunk sits in the middle of the room. Ooh, what's inside?

OOC: Class has started!

Lesson Progression:

Question 1

Depulso & Question 2

Accio & Mini Activity

Main Activity: Snowball Fight!

Chocolate and peppermint was one of Olivia's most favourite combinations in the whole wide world. She could even smell those two scents from outside of the classroom. Mmm.... As she entered the classroom, she took a moment to enjoy the scent and just relax. Ahh... This was nice. Walking into the room, she noticed that a few students had already grabbed a few treats. She was definitely tempted to do so but first she'd greet the Professor. "Hello Professor Marchand! Thank you for the hot cocoa." she called with a smile before pouring herself a little hot chocolate and grabbing a peppermint stick.

With beverage in hand, she made her way over to Matt, Noelle, and Olly. Ooh! She hadn't seen Olly in what felt like eons! "Hello!" she greeted, sitting down on the seat and sliding over to her mates, being very careful not to spill her hot chocolate. "How's it going? Is it just me or is it chilly in here?"

As one could imagine, Olivia Phillips was READY for another Charms class. With it being one of her best subjects, she'd made plans to arrive early...which had been foiled, but that had been the original plan. Um, just.... her execution and follow through had failed..... BUT the less!smol blonde Gryffindor was finally here and ready to... do things. Charms things. Less headache-inducing subject matter. Said headaches were getting pretty unbearable these days...

"Professor." It was probably the least energetic greeting she'd ever given this man, but to make up for this lack of enthusiasm, she was smiling, at least. Forced, but it was there. "I hope you're well...."

Also, benches. There were benches and not desks. And a weird trunk in the dead center of the room. Merlin, what was this? Her curiosity was piqued, but... Liv was a little confused by this seating situation. And she was saying yes to hot chocolate, though there WAS a warming charm on the room, she could tell. There was less bite to the atmosphere.... As well as the bench, when she seated her bum on it.

Allergies. Derf was CONVINCED that Hogwarts professors HAD to be allergic to desks. Or maybe there was an anti-desk movement at the school...because basically eeeeeeeveryone seemed against the idea of desks. Which was a little perplexing to the first year who associated school with desks. But all wondering about desks and their lack of was pushed to the side when he saw hot cocoa AND candy canes. Well then.

Making a beeline over there, Derf grabbed himself a cup AND a candy cane that he immediately began swirling inside the hot liquid to make himself some peppermint hot cocoa. "Fanks, professor!" he chirped, raising his cup like he saw dad do all the time at important things to show his gratitude. Erm...something in return? Derf felt BAD ... ish ... that the professor was always providing all these snacks and things sooooooooooo into his trouser pocket - the one without Scamander - the Hufflepuff reached in for a chocolate frog which he immediately offered to the Charms professor. "If the card is-s-s Balfour Blane...can I haff it?"

OH THERE WAS DORA! He offered the older girl a BIIIIIIIIIIG grin and a wave. Yes. He would go sit by her because she was GOOD at charms and had seen so first hand. Although she looked a little grumpy...so maybe he should go back and get her some hot cocoa and a candy cane.... "Do you want somefing to drink?" Or a chocolate frog? He had those too.

Dora looked up at the sound of someone speaking to her... and tried to smile, but being hungry and tired prevented her from doing so. Yep.

... WHAT WAS THAT?!

Oh nooooo!

Without thinking, Dora reached out and smacked Derf's hand. The one with the cocoa in it, in the hopen of knocking it away. "Never accept food or drinks at Hogwarts unless it's from the Great Hall or directly from an elf! " Why had no one told the precious Hufflepuff these things?! The Gryffindor watched him closely for any signs of Potion effects or spell work.

Merlin! That was CLOSE!

Abey was HERE and actually he was not crying today, Mr. ProfessorMan. Except he hadn't even cried all THAT much so far this term and definitely not as much as he had on the day he had been Sorted. In fact, he had been quite upbeat in Charms classes on account of the fact that quickly grasping practical magic had been proved to be something of a strength of his.

Professor Whatsisface for a cheery wave as Abey entered the classroom and made a beeline for the refreshments. Hot cocoa was definitely in order; Abey was NOT used to these Northern winters and was absolutely chilled to the bone. He had to warm up, pronto, so that he could be in tip top shape for Charms class.

Cocoa was quickly sorted out, and so off Abey went, looking for the best seat he could find along the benches. But not before passing ACCIDENTALLY VERY CLOSE to the trunk in the middle of the room, so that he could have a nose about in his way past, and maybe nudge it a little as he did. Just looking. Just curious. Just checking actually.

Default Feel free to RP with Zelena.
Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Zelena casually observed the room around her, fiddling with her tie. She noticed that many of her fellow students had sampled some food/beverages but she just wasn't interested in hot cocoa. She was more of a cup of tea type of girl. She quickly glanced at the trunk and had to admit that her curiosity was slightly peaked but she wasn't going to go anywhere near it until she was allowed.

Zelena was starting to get cold so she walked around a bit, keeping herself warm. It seems like she wasn't used to the weather this year. Hopefully, her perfect health record would stay the same.

The weather hadn’t stopped Elle too much. An extra sweater, maybe a simple heating charm too, and she was at least close to comfortable. Given the normal chilliness of the castle corridors during wintertime, not to mention living in the dungeons. She’d had to learn a few things, or she’d have been curled up near the fire constantly and that would have made it difficult to attend lessons. Especially when they were lessons she was more than proficient in, even if Charms wasn’t exactly the same as Herbology.

Walking into the classroom, the first thing she saw was the lack of desks. Interesting, but hardly something to comment on. It just made her wonder if they were going to be watching a show or something. It was entirely possible, given the mysterious trunk. However, she merely gave the professor a smile. “Good morning Professor Marchand,” she said, walking over to help herself to a cup of cocoa before making her way to the left and a seat near Nat.

You know who didn't mind the hot chocolate and candy cane smell that she was greeted with upon skipping into the classroom? This girl right here! Charlotte waved at the professor in greeting, scooped a mug up, and then, with slightly less energy just so that her mug wouldn't spill, found a seat in the middle of the room. Oooooh Benches!

Hopefully they'd be learning something fun today. She was ready for it!

It wasn’t long before the first student arrived. “Good morning, Miss Holmes,” Professor Marchand greeted her, returning her smile. He was a little taken aback by her question though. Perhaps he should’ve made it clearer that the benches were meant for the students. “Oh yes, of course! Please have a seat.”

Bounce, bounce, bounce.

"Goooooooooooood MORNING, professor Marchand!" It was a good morning. And he was almost the first one there, apart from an older student from his own house. Hi older student.

He marched straight up to the refreshments to see what was available to them today and bounced a little when he saw the hot cocoa. His favorite in the whole world. He'd even planned to go see professor Salvatore and ask her to have it in the bakery but he didn't need the bakery if he went to Charms.

"OH! OH! OH!" Exciting. He glanced at professor Marchand. "Can I have some? I want some." He beamed as he started to take some of the tasty treats. Because WHYYY would it be standing there if he couldn't have some? That was torture and he liked professor Marchand, he didn't do that stuff.
And here came another Slytherin, this one much younger than the first. And he was bouncing; that made the professor smile. “And a good morning to you too, Mr. Lewis! he said. He had to stifle a laugh at the boy’s reaction to the treats. “You certainly may; please help yourself.”

A kidnapped former Auror? So curious....
Then one of the Gryffindor prefects arrived. Gaston was glad to see him; he was beginning to wonder if the other three houses would be joining this lesson. Not that he would’ve minded teaching just the Slytherins, of course. “Hello, Mr. Salander,” he returned the greeting. His eyes followed the boy to the trunk. Well, he supposed it was only a matter of time before someone asked what was inside. “You’ll find out soon enough.” He may or may not have given the prefect a knowing smile.

"Hello, professor." Etta greeted the professor politely before she made her way over to the drinks table. Hot cocoa! YUM. Could they have some? Yes?
Next to arrive was a Hufflepuff girl – and a polite one at that! “Hello, Miss Kramer, the charms professor replied, inclining his head toward her.

Taking a cup of hot cocoa into her hands she hugged the warm beverage to her face as she breathed in the scent of chocolate and the steam coming from the cup, stepping out of the way she turned back to the trunk and began walking around it trying to figure this out.
Here was another Gryffindor. “Good morning, Miss Bailey, Gaston greeted her. He couldn’t help but notice the way she was looking at the benches and trunk. All would be explained in time!

She didn't want to show the class what her bogart was. No one needed to see that.

Pushing it out of her mind she gave the professor an small smile, "Good day Professor." Turning from him Nat made her way towards a seat on the left. She gave the other students a smile and a wave before sitting down and taking out her things.
Ah, here came the Head Girl! The charms professor gave her a warm smile as she passed him. “And a very good day to you, Miss Franks-Mundie!”

But for now she needed to get to the lesson on time.

She nearly sighed in relief when she felt the warmth of the classroom. That was good at least she wasn't going to freeze in the classroom. And refreshment. Ooh. She was going to go there once the professor had said it was okay, since she heard a few more students asking.

"Hello Professor" She murmured with a smile, and instead headed to sit on the right bench. This was new, and she was interesting to see what was going to happen in today's class.
“Hello, Miss Paton,” Professor Marchand greeted the next arrival. He half-expected the girl to make a beeline for the refreshments and was slightly surprised when she didn’t. “Please, help yourself to some refreshments,” he offered, gesturing toward the table at the back of the room.

Also, how come there weren't desks? Zoryn didn't like that. 'Cause she had a usual spot but now she had to find an all new usual spot. And honestly, that was a lot of pressure. Where were her friiiiiiiiiiends?
Now here was a cheery one! Gaston eagerly returned the young Gryffindor girl’s smile; this was exactly the kind of attitude he liked to see in his students. “Hello, Miss Spinnet,” he said. It wasn’t often that students wanted to high-five him (come to think of it, he couldn’t recall that ever happening to him before!) but that didn’t stop him from high-fiving her back. This just made his day!

Hey the desks were gone!

Ahh well.. he grabbed some hot Cocoa and then headed over to sit on the left bench..
The charms professor was a little taken aback when Mr. Kennedy thanked him for the heating charm but smiled nonetheless. Now here was a polite young man! “Good morning, Mr. Kennedy; you’re quite welcome,” he replied. “I am quite well, thank you for asking. And you?”

"Good day Professor Marchand," she greeted cheerfully, as she went to sit down next to Leon. "Hey Leon," she said in quitter words, removing her bag of books and placing them by the bench.
Another Ravenclaw and another student eyeing the trunk – not that Gaston minded that at all. In fact, he was impressed by his students’ curiousity. He just hoped they wouldn’t be disappointed when they found out what was actually in there. “Good day to you too, Miss Valentine,” he said with a small smile.

Her slight joy remained as she stepped into the classroom, lowering her spell and letting the wonderful heat of the class wash over her. Mason dipped her head slightly towards their professor, who was watching as they entered the classroom. "Professor Marchand."

Dark eyes dancing over the interior of the classroom, Mason looked each of the peasants over, smiling slightly to the people she knew. Charms was the best.

Noelle took a seat beside Matt and offered him a wave of fudge before sipping her hot cocoa.

She quickly took the empty seat next to him and placed her bag on the ground. "Morning, Leon." She said then grinned and took a sip of her hot cocoa. She was so happy to see him.
Miss Darcy’s mood was quite a stark contrast from the previous arrival, and Professor Marchand was very glad to see that. He returned the girl’s wave and smiled at her. “Good morning, Miss Darcy,” he said. “You’re most welcome!” Such politeness!

Well, almost.

"Hiii Professor!" She distractedly told Professor Marchand before dashing towards the table in the back of the room. OH LOOK. There were no desks! Grabbing a mug, Daisy made her way to the right bench to sit by Hattie, eyeing the chest in the middle of the room. "You don't think there's a monster in there, do you?" She whispered to the Hufflepuff girl, raising her mug to toast with her and noticing her friend had none.

WHAAAT?!

... did she have to wait? Oops.
“Hello, Miss Carden,” Gaston greeted the girl who arrived next. He watched as she quickly made a beeline for the refreshments, smiling slightly. He knew holiday treats would be a good idea! He thought he overheard her say something to Miss Paton about a monster. No, no monster in the trunk, Miss Carden. This wasn’t DADA class.

He turned toward the desks all set to take his usual seat, when he noticed the desks were GONE.

Seriously? What was it with this school and desks?!

He started to take a seat on a bench, but then he heard some other kid ask for permission to sit down. He paused, waiting to hear the answer. He didn't even think to ask for permission, but somebody had, so he'd wait.
In walked another Slytherin. The professor was beginning to wonder if the students had planned to arrive two from each house at a time; he was definitely seeing a pattern here! “Good morning, Mr. Westwood,” he said with a smile. He waited for the boy to sit down and was slightly taken aback when he didn’t. “Please have a seat.”

Olly's day was getting better and better. He grinned more broadly when his gaze landed on the snacks at the back of the classroom. Hot chocolate and fudge. Olly poured himself a mug and grabbed a piece of the fudge before looking for a spot to sit. The fact that there were no desks in the room barely phased him. Though it was a little unusual for charms class, he had walked into many different classrooms without desks so it wasn't completely out of the ordinary. Olly selected his seat next to Noelle and nudged her with the elbow that was not attached to the arm holding hot chocolate. "Hey."
Well, so much for the students arriving in pairs idea. Here was the third Slytherin in a row! Gaston couldn’t help but notice this boy’s wide grin at the sight of the refreshments, and he returned it with a smile of his own. “Good morning, Mr. Thomas-Borzekowski,” he replied. “My day’s been fine so far, thank you for asking. What about yours?”

Janelle picked up some fudge and cocoa and found a seat on one of the benches. As she sipped her cocoa, she observed the trunk that was the centerpiece of the room. Ahhhh, something else to pique her curiosity. Janelle had no choice, but to be patient and wait for its contents to be revealed. In the meantime, she'd just enjoy her snacks.
The charms professor was almost expecting the next arrival to be yet another Slytherin, but it wasn’t; it was Miss Guidry. He smiled at the Ravenclaw girl as she passed. “Hello, Miss Guidry,” he said.

Was it just him or did something seem a little off about Miss Umbridge today? Gaston was pretty good at picking up on people’s emotions. The thought crossed his mind to ask the girl if something was bothering her but decided against it. He didn’t want to embarrass her; she could always come to him later if she wanted. Instead he just gave her an encouraging smile and said, “Good morning, Miss Umbridge.”

Here was Miss Holden, a student Gaston remembered well from his days as the charms teaching assistant back at Beaubatons. He beamed back at the Gryffindor as she smiled at him. “Good morning, Miss Holden,” he returned her greeting. “You’re quite welcome.”

It seemed Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne had forgotten to say hello to the professor on his way in. Gaston understood; he was probably just distracted by the treats. Nonetheless he greeted the Hufflepuff warmly, “Hello, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne.” He couldn’t help but smile as the boy raised his cup and thanked him. “You’re very welcome.” His blue eyes blinked in surprise as the kid offered him a chocolate frog, but he hadn’t the heart to refuse. “Thank you, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne; of course you can.” Was it bad that he hoped the card wouldn’t be Balfour Blane? He didn’t collect chocolate frog cards, but he sort of wanted to hold on to this particular one. He unwrapped the candy, and sure enough… “I’m afraid it isn’t Balfour Blane; it’s Albus Dumbledore instead. Do you want that card too?”

Without thinking, Dora reached out and smacked Derf's hand. The one with the cocoa in it. "Never accept food or drinks at Hogwarts unless it's from the Great Hall or directly from an elf! " Why had no one told the precious Hufflepuff these things?! The Gryffindor watched him closely for any signs of Potion effects or spell work.

Merlin!
The charms professor was watching the door waiting for more students to arrive when out of the corner of his eye, he saw Miss Umbridge smack Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne’s hand. He sighed exasperatedly, wondering what he could’ve done to make her think he’d actually poison his own students. He could understand having an off day, but this was crossing the line. Miss Umbridge, that was entirely uncalled for,” he said, crossing the room to the girl, “but since I believe your heart was in the right place, I won’t dock points this time.”

He shot her a warning look, then turned to Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne. “I promise there’s nothing wrong with the cocoa,” he assured the boy. And just to prove his point, he poured himself a cup and took a long swig from it. See, nothing bad happened to him.

Gaston beamed at Mr. Botros as he came in. The boy seemed to be in much better spirits than he’d been at the feast, which the professor was very glad to see. “Hello, Mr. Botros,” he said, returning his student’s wave, and he watched as the boy helped himself to some cocoa.

A Slytherin girl arrived next, and Gaston politely returned the smile she gave him with one of his own. “Good morning, Miss Penrose,” he replied.

Zelena carefully sat down, her hands folded in her lap and her schoolbag next to her, as she attentively listened to Professor Marchand. Did she have the need for another Heating Charm in the room? No, she could manage this. Besides, she had recovered slightly from a case of the sniffles and wasn't going to risk her health. She wasn't in the mood for her father to make her his guinea pig.

Her foot dangled slightly as she thought about her answer. There were a couple of incantations going through her mind. She raised her hand and said, "Professor? Would the Freezing Charm suffice?"

It was bound to, she thought to herself. After all, it did stop things not slow them down or alter the object's course. Then a voice in her head said, "nothing is that simple." This answer was causing her a bit of stress.

"Get it together, Holmes!"

He'll find out soon enough. And that knowing grin. Oh a surprise? Tenacius LOVES surprises hehehe.

So off he goes getting some hot cocoa and the peppermint candy sticks and sat himself on one of the benches, and soon enough the lecture began. Oh.... that trunk hurtling towards him? Yeah thats gonna hurt if it hits. IF. What could he use to counter that?

Up goes the hand "Sir, what about Arresto Momentum?" A spell familiar to him.... mostly because his dad had to use it many many many times

a bit of madness is key | miss chanandler bong | those cunning folks use any means

Carlton was so comfortable. And so warm. He wiggled his body a little when he placed his tushy down on the bench. He hadn't even thought about the cold? That was a charm that kept him from freezing? Carlton took a sip of the hot cocoa. Magic was neat.

Then his eyes fell on the trunk in the middle of the room. He hadn't even noticed that before?! What iiiiiiis it? He was curious now but resisted the urge to go to it and just fling it open. He imagined that wouldn't go down great with professor Marchand.

He didn't want it flown at his face though. He imagined professor Marchand just having a fit and throwing it around the room like a crazy person. Suddenly the fudge grew a little in his mouth. He was scared.

But his hand still shot in the air. "I would duck, professor." It wasn't exactly the answer to his question but it was the truth. Carlton didn't know any spells that stopped objects from moving. "But eh... Maybe you could transform it into something else, professor." Because he knew older magic-knowing people could transform things. "Liiike.... A feather! Then it wouldn't hurt when it hit you in the face."

Wow. He was so smart. A feather in the face seemed like a much better option than a trunk full of... Well, what was it full of? HMMMM?

Oh! She was the last to arrive, well at least she had got there in time. Whoops! Char was warm enough though so she just nodded along and then leaned forward, her focusing face on.

She looked at the trunk. Hummmm..... Oooo! Char stuck her hand up, wanting to think a bit outside the box, though she might have otherwise said Immobulus she went in a different direction.

"You could use a cushioning charm!"

Having a trunk like that hurtle towards you would NOT be fun. Nu-uh.

"Protego, or Immobulus, Professor," Harvey replied, his eyes still on the trunk as if it would suddenly leap into the air and attack him.

With her hands covering a warm muck of hot chocolate milk she walked to the middle of the classroom and stared at the large trunk but she didn’t asked anything, she knew better by now. The professor wouldn’t tell her anyway so better just wait for the explanation when it was the right time BUT she was really curious!

Bleh, there was still no fire allowed in this classroom! How boring… Fire was a perfect way to heat a cold classroom, not that she NEEDED fire to warm herself but it would be cool never less. Butttttt…. The trunk! What was in it? Was the teacher ready to explain more about it? She was CURIOUUUUUS! But huh? A spell? How surprising during a charms lesson, although she had hoped that there would be hiding a monster inside of the trunk she needed to fight because THAT would be cool too! Hah! But this question was a good one too, not that she could think about a situation in which she needed to defend herself against flying large objects… Well… Maybe if somebody who would be VERY stupid would climb in a bookcase and that those same bookcases would fall down… Then, MAYBE! A smile covered the second year’s lips while thinking about situations in which she needed that spell and well, now that she thought about it, there were a few really fun things to think about!

BUUUUUT, that wasn’t the question! Shaking her head she tried to focus back on the question… Well, there was only one charm she already had learned AND could think about right now so she raised her hand before speaking, “I would use the Arresto Momentum charm” spoke Leesha, still sounding in a good mood because, well… She still had her hot chocolate milk in her hands and it was JUMMM!

"It probably isn't a monster." Daisy told the Hufflepuff, eyes still on that trunk. This is Charms, they were probably going to use it to practise some spell or something like that. Shaking her head amusedly, the Slytherin watched her friend go and get a mug of coco, her own mug warm between her hands.

There would be little note taking today, let's be honest.

So Daisy paid extra attention when Professor Marchand started talking. Right, so probably definitely no monster in there. "We could use Avifors and turn the trunk into a bird!"She replied with a raised hand. And then hopefully the bird would flyyyyyy, flyyyy away.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta took a sip of her cocoa, very much enjoying the hot beverage before pulling out her quill and book out of her bag. Yeeep, now she was ready for class!

Something hurtling towards her? Hmmm. The Hufflepuff paused thoughtfully for a few months, trying to come up with something different. "Uh... well, you can use the shield charm to protect yourself from whatever it is." She answered, raising a hand before taking another sip of her cocoa. Gosh, it was so GOOD.

When class was called to order, Janelle put her cocoa down.........for the moment anyway. She had her quill ready, should any notes need to be taken. However, the first question of the day came up right away. Janelle tried to picture a trunk hurtling toward her. It was not a vision that she wanted to imagine. The first thing that popped into her head, caused her to raise her hand.

"I would use Arresto Momentum as well Professor.". That would be sure to give her a fighting chance. If it didn't stop the trunk completely, it would at least slow it down. Of course there were other possibilities. They could use Protego and Fianto Duri, like they'd recently learned. Of course that is if they wanted to obliterate the trunk.

So no bogart? Well that made Natalia breath a bit easier. She set her things down and pulled out her parchment so that she could take notes and be ready for class. As he asked about if they were warm enough, Nat glanced around feeling fine, but could help if needed with a warming charm.

Soon the class was getting started though and she listened to the first question. Well she knew she'd use a charm to stop the object, but other's had already mentioned it so she thought about something else she could use. Her mind wondered about different things, could she just turn it into some flowers or confetti maybe?

In the end her thoughts went to one thing, "Professor a shrinking charm could just shrink it so it wouldn't hurt you."

Why was he so cute?

Leon smiled as he watched her take a sip of her cocoa, even the way she drank was adorable! For a moment it looked like the seventh years eyes were pretty much hearts! "I'm glad you are doing good. " He said with a grin at her.. "Better now that you are here. " He then gave her the slightest nudge and smiled down warmly at her.

He really needed to ask her out or something..

"Hey Juno. " He was about to ask her something when the Professor started to speak and he looked at the box, wondering what charm he would use if it was to come hurdling at him..

He raised his hand and spoke..

"I would use Flippendo, the knock back jinx to get it out of my way Professor. " Because that would be the safest really. And yeah it was a Jinx and not a charm.. hopefully that was all right? He did say spell, and didn't specify "charm."

Default Oh man. I'm sorry. D:

Was he... had he just chided her? In front of everyone? Dora jutted out her jaw and took a deep breath... to let him have it, but it just didn't come. The outrage she thought she would feel, the harsh words.

She didn't have energy for it today, it seemed. "I think it's pretty sound advice, personally. My uncle would say so. Sorry you thought it was rude, but I don't feel sorry for having done it, " she said honestly and in and bored tone.

Now. Class had started.

Like and good little girl she raised her hand and waited to be called on. "Reducto. " Destructive magic was her forte, after all.

Cassie returned her full attention back to Professor Marchand as the man started the lesson, the girl pushing her schoolbag under the bench she was sitting on with her parchment and pen on her lap. Was she warm enough? Yeah, the fourth year was feeling alright in the classroom. Not to mention the hot chocolate provided for their snacks warmed you up from the inside out.

And then the question. She moved her gaze to the trunk as the professor mentioned it as an example. For one thing, Cass certainly hoped she never actually had that happen. But if she had, her first thought was Aresto momentum. However she was beaten to it by a Gryffindor prefect, Janelle and a younger Slytherin girl. As was the shield charm, the levitation charm and Immobulus. So onto thinking of something else to work.

"Could Petrificus Totalus work on an inanimate object?" she finally supplied after raising her hand. Hmm ...it was called the body bind so maybe not but she had already spoken so no taking back.

And here came another Slytherin, this one much younger than the first. And he was bouncing; that made the professor smile. “And a good morning to you too, Mr. Lewis! he said. He had to stifle a laugh at the boy’s reaction to the treats. “You certainly may; please help yourself.”

Next to arrive was a Hufflepuff girl – and a polite one at that! “Hello, Miss Kramer, the charms professor replied, inclining his head toward her.

Here was another Gryffindor. “Good morning, Miss Bailey, Gaston greeted her. He couldn’t help but notice the way she was looking at the benches and trunk. All would be explained in time!

Ah, here came the Head Girl! The charms professor gave her a warm smile as she passed him. “And a very good day to you, Miss Franks-Mundie!”

“Hello, Miss Paton,” Professor Marchand greeted the next arrival. He half-expected the girl to make a beeline for the refreshments and was slightly surprised when she didn’t. “Please, help yourself to some refreshments,” he offered, gesturing toward the table at the back of the room.

The charms professor was a little taken aback when Mr. Kennedy thanked him for the heating charm but smiled nonetheless. Now here was a polite young man! “Good morning, Mr. Kennedy; you’re quite welcome,” he replied. “I am quite well, thank you for asking. And you?”

The professor had to stifle a laugh at the way Miss Griffel practically sang hello to him. The thought briefly crossed his mind to sing a greeting back to her, but he quickly decided against that. The students didn’t need to hear his terrible singing! Instead he simply said, “Hello to you too, Miss Griffel.

Gaston inclined his head politely toward the new arrival. “Good morning, Miss Stevens,” he greeted her. He couldn’t’ help but notice that this particular student didn’t seem at all interested in the refreshments or the trunk in the middle of the room. Oh well, to each their own…

And here was Mr. Merriwether. “Hello, Mr. Merriwether, Gaston greeted the Gryffindor boy, returning his wave with a small one of his own. His eyes followed him to the refreshment table, and he smiled a little. Somehow he had a feeling that would be the boy’s first stop.

The other Gryffindor prefect arrived shortly after Mr. Merriwether. Gaston immediately noticed how bundled up the girl was and wondered if his heating charm needed strengthening. “Good morning, Miss Summers, he said with a slight smile. “Are you quite warm enough?”

Here was another bundled-up student. Now Gaston was really starting to worry that his spell had worn off! Or then again maybe not… “Hello, Miss Delgado,” he greeted the Hufflepuff. “You’re very welcome. I hope you’re warm enough.”

“Hello, Mr. Keir, Professor Marchand greeted the Slytherin boy who just arrived, but he walked right past him without saying a word. And were those earphones? The professor was slightly offended but chose not to say anything about it. Maybe the kid was just having an off day… happens to everyone once in a while.

Miss Darcy’s mood was quite a stark contrast from the previous arrival, and Professor Marchand was very glad to see that. He returned the girl’s wave and smiled at her. “Good morning, Miss Darcy,” he said. “You’re most welcome!” Such politeness!

Here was Miss Holden, a student Gaston remembered well from his days as the charms teaching assistant back at Beaubatons. He beamed back at the Gryffindor as she smiled at him. “Good morning, Miss Holden,” he returned her greeting. “You’re quite welcome.”

Ah, here was Miss Phillips! The charms professor smiled at the girl but his expression quickly changed. He couldn’t help but notice the lack of enthusiasm in her greeting – and the fact that she hadn’t tried to call him by his first name. Odd… that wasn’t like her at all! “Good morning, Miss Phillips,” he said. “I’m very well, thank you. How are you?”

A Slytherin girl arrived next, and Gaston politely returned the smile she gave him with one of his own. “Good morning, Miss Penrose,” he replied.

It was almost time for class to start when Miss Kettleburn came in. Gaston gave the girl a friendly smile and waved back at her. “Hello, Miss Kettleburn; you’re just in time.”

Professor Marchand pointed his wand at the door, making it close and lock tightly behind Miss Kettleburn. He took his place at the front of the classroom and cleared his throat loudly, waiting a few moments for quiet before he began. “Good morning, class,” he said. “Before we get into today’s lesson, is everyone warm enough? I’d be glad to cast another heating charm if necessary.” Because he definitely didn’t want the students casting their own spells to warm up; hopefully they all remembered his no fire rule.

After a brief pause, he went on, “Now, imagine a large object – like that trunk, for example-“ His eyes momentarily dropped to the trunk in the middle of the room. “-is hurtling toward you. What spell would you use to stop it? The answers can be as outside-the-box as you like.” He could’ve used the trunk to demonstrate, but he didn’t because that would be dangerous… that and he had something else in mind for that trunk. Something that the students would find out son enough.

OOC: Class has officially started! Feel free to join in at any time; just pretend you charries have been here all along. We'll be moving on again in 20 - 24 HOURS.
Hum....maybe a shielding charm? Yes! Jomas smiled and raised his hand. "How about a shielding spell? I forgot the name but doesn't it pair with pertago?"
Well Jonas you butchered that word to death...

Kitty raised her hand. "I would use Flippindo too, like Leon said. Although it's more likely I'd duck rather than have time to pull my wand out and cast a spell. Ducking is more instinctive to me." Which she thought was very understandable. Unless you were in the middle of a duel and your wand was at the ready, it seemed unlikely you would be able to draw your wand quick enough to retaliate - unless you were very fast or the trunk was coming very slow.
