Today was a night lesson. Professor Salvatore wasn't going to be teaching about the constellations but she would be teaching about something in our solar system that was just as important. As the students walk into the class room the tables were formed into a half circle looking towards the chalkboard and the black lake. The room was dimly lit and on each chair there were blankets just in case the students get cold. Once you walk into the room you'll see Professor Salvatore where she always is at the beginning of each class, at her desk, today she was reading a book.

OOC: Please remember to follow all of Professor Salvatore's rules and remember all SS rules apply! You're more than welcome to have your characters mingle before class starts.

Appearances could be deceiving. Declan had learned that many years ago. He narrowed his eyes slightly at the strange vibe he was feeling in the room. The Professor's aura seemed a little different, there was some kind of disturbance. It looked weak--or rather--it looked concealed. It was really disturbing. It made it hard to concentrate in class. As such, he was slacking in the research portion of their class activity. He glanced at his brother's notes and nodded in approval.
Sometimes he wondered if his brother was better off in Ravenclaw.
The next activity was more hands on and Declan sighed a little. This was better for his concentration. Anything that involved a tactile touch was surely going to bring him to the present moment. Declan leaned to the left, placing one arm on Brent's desk.
"Hey, man," he greeted. "Wanna work with us? I'll grab what we need if you help with the paint job." Declan then gave Brent back his space and decided to invade Levi's. "Your penmanship..." Declan squinted at it. "Leaves a lot to be desired."

Olly thought he and Noelle had been doing pretty good with the phases of the moon. He'd drawn little pictures next to each phase because that was more interesting than writing facts and stuff. He looked up at the professor and grinned when he saw that they were actually going to do something with art. That seemed to be a theme in a lot of the classes lately, and Olly definitely was not complaining about that.
"Ready to do some painting?" He asked Noelle with a nudge. Professor Salvatore hadn't specifically said they could work in groups, but he was assuming it would be alright? Or should they each do their own poster? He probably should have asked but didn't care quite enough to do that. He went to the front of the classroom to gather the proper supplies. One poster board, seven small wooden balls for the moon phases, and one bigger one for the sun. And some paint and paint brushed of course. He brought the supplies back to his desk. If Noelle wanted her own she could get some, but he spread his stuff across both their desks assuming they would probably share.
Things were really coming along now. Brent kind of wished he had a partner, though. It was kind of late for that kind of thing now, though, since he was already halfway finished with going through the phases of the moon. Speaking of which, he probably didn't have a whole lot of time left, so he turned back to his textbook and read some more.
He found it interesting how the Full Moon was pretty much the opposite of the New Moon---in appearance and definition. He jotted down a few things then made note of that 180 degree turn. Basically, from here on out, everything just did the same as before but in the opposite direction. He made note of that, too.
Phases of the Moon
New Moon: This is when the moon can't be seen from Earth, because the Sun is shining on the part we can't see from our planet.
Waxing Crescent: This is when it looks like the moon looks like it's growing. It's really not, because the moon is a big rock and can't just grow and shrink. It's really just appearing more and more to us on Earth.
First Quarter: You would think this would be a fourth of the moon, but no. This is when you see half of the moon.
Waxing Gibbous: So what I can gather from this phase is that again, the moon looks like it is growing. However, we can just see more and more of it. The moon is about to be full during this phase.
Full Moon: This is the moon phase where we see the full, entire moon in all its glory. The entire moon is visible from Earth, and it looks like a near-perfect circle in the sky. The moon has moved a full 180 degrees from how it was in the New Moon phase, which is why it is fully visible.
At this point, the phases basically repeat, but the moon just appears to shrink away in the opposite direction as it now gets smaller and smaller in appearance.

Professor Salvatore put the boards on the table near her desk at the front of the classroom. She went back towards the back of the classroom and grabbed some medium sized wooden balls, Caroleena also grabbed some larger wooden balls. She also grabbed some paint brushes, some yellow-orange paint, white and black paints and places them all on the table.
"Time's up everyone!" she said in another cheery tone, still very not like her. "I didn't teach you myself about the phases of the moon because I believe that some learning in the classroom needs to be done by the students themself." Explanation was over on that part, she knew that there were students that didn't agree with that and figured they should know why it was happening.
"Before you can leave for the day I would like for you guys to place the phases of the moon onto one of these poster boards. Now there are medium sized wooden spheres, you're going to use those as the moons. On each moon you will have to paint the each phase you just researched. The larger wooden sphere will represent the sun. For the moons one side of the moon should be painted white and other side of the moon should be painted black. I think we all know what color the sun should be painted." Caroleena paused and picked up an already finished project. "This is what your finished project should look like." She said holding up the poster board. "For a little extra credit you can add some fact about each phase that you find interesting and write it near each phase on your board." she said as she sat back down at her desk. "I also have a chart for each phase of the moon posted here on the board just in case some of you want a larger reference than what your textbook has to offer."
OOC: Sorry it took so long to post this, I forgot I was going to a birthday party. You all have until Tuesday February 28th, 2017 at 6:00PM GMT (Tuesday February 28th,2017 at 1:00PM EST) If you want to make graphic for the moon phase board then you're more than welcome to but it's not necessary. If anyone has any question you can ask me via PM, VM or IM. Thank you so very much for your patience!

By the time Professor Salvatore finished explaining the activity, Levi's head had completely tilted to one side the way cruppies and puppies tended to do when presented with something awfully curious. He was not going to start complaining about the woman's new attitude, but, well--one could not help but to wonder. Actually, it was a little worrisome. Was she feeling okay???
He shot her several speculative looks as he moved his desk closer to his brother's and a Slytherin boy whom Declan had chosen as part of their group. "I'd ask you to show me yours, Declan, so we could compare notes, but--" Levi shot him a look that was only a little bit superior, clearly proud of his note-taking skills, "--I know better." Then he leaned over to Brent's notes, his turn now to invade the other boy's space, and inspected them. "Wow, yours are really detailed." Coming from Levi, this was possibly a very high compliment indeed.
Levi leaned back on his chair and pulled out some fresh parchment where he began to roughly sketch the phases of the moon. "So, how do we want to do this? Do we want to add some explanation to each drawing, then? If we do then I suggest we use your notes, uh---" Levi was evidently addressing the other Slytherin boy and was unable to recall his name, "--I'm sorry, I don't know your name. But we should definitely use your notes." Then he looked back at the professor, and lowered his voice enough for only the two Slytherin boys to hear, presumably. "Not to sound like a masochist, but Professor Salvatore is acting kind of strange, right????" Maybe she was trying for a different teaching approach?

She grinned, "All correct except for Blue moon. With a blue moon you just have two full moons in one month. So not technically a phase but at the same time kinda." She said with a wink and a smile. Grinning, she asked "There are eight phases of the moon. You have already said three. Do you, Oh Captain, My Captain, remember the rest?" Juno knew them but she wanted to see just how much her handsome guy knew.
She continued writing down things as they were talking but when he said that, she looked at the hair in her face and grinned.
She looked up at him, biting her bottom lip, "Yes, well...that will have to be a subject for later." She smiled and looked back down at the paper, hair still in her face.

Leon was about to respond to Juno when the Professor spoke and told them what their final project was.. Another art project? Leon sighed a bit before he turned to Juno.. "I'm going to go gather some supplies for us. My Supernova girl! " He said with a grin as he moved from his desk and gathered up some wooden balls, paint, brushes and poster board..
With his arms loaded up he returned to his and Juno's desk and carefully sat things down on the desk..
"And here we go again..I think I'm gonna start pairing all the balls white..what do you think? Do you wanna label the poster board? " He asked her curiously.

Juno sighed. Another art project? Well, they best get to it. She chuckled at the new nickname. That was more like it. Supernova girl worked for her. Plus it fit pretty well. "Alright. I promise not to explode while your gone." She giggled.
When he got back she helped him to set out all the supplies they would need, pulling the black poster with the hole in the center towards herself.
Juno nodded in agreement, "Sounds good to me. Besides you're the better painter." She winked at him, and pulled out the example chart to look at as reference for where each label needed to go. She immediately turned the chart to where the sunlight was at the top, like their poster would be. Otherwise, it wouldn't have made a lick of sense to her and she would have labeled it wrong.
"Does this make more sense to you with the chart this way and the way we have to make the poster?" She asked Leon just to make sure she was doing this the right way before she started labeling anything.

Brent hadn't exactly gotten finished, but he had wrote down that everything basically repeated but in the opposite direction. That was the same as writing down every last detail, right? RIGHT! He declared it! Just when he thought he might be finished and class might be coming to an end, another task was assigned. This one seemed more involved, too. Class was far from over, but there was a bright side. This wasn't Divination or Runes or Arithmancy, so all hope wasn't lost.
Just as he closed his textbook, he was joined by two other dudes who were offering to partner up. "Yeah, man. Thanks," he said with a grin. "It was getting kind of boring working by myself." He looked at the other guy who joined them and decided to introduce himself. He didn't want to be known as 'that dude from Astronomy class'. "I'm Brent, by the way."
He looked down at his notes when one of the guys said something about them. "You mean I could have gotten away with doing less?" he added. They seemed surprised about his notes. "Note-taking isn't my thing, but I'm cool with my notes being used." Duuuuude. This was new. He wasn't used to being the guy with all the notes in class. This wasn't going to give him a reputation, was it? The talk turned to the professor, and Brent shrugged. "I don't know, man. What was she like before?" he asked. He hadn't to seem out of the loop, but he hadn't really made a point of analyzing the professors' personalities.
"I'm good with doing the painting," he said, suddenly remembering the first guy had mentioned that before. So basically all they had to do was paint, position, and fix to the posted, hmm?

He sighed when his brother started asking questions. He didn't want to be the bearer of bad and ambiguous news. That just wasn't enough certainty to share. Still.
"Yeah, Salvatore seems a bit too saccharine. You know?" Declan commented as he dug around his robes pockets pulling out a bag of fruit gummies. "Like this." He squished a mini gelatin grape between his thumb and index finger before popping it in his mouth.

Skylar was trying really hard to pay attention, but somehow one of the woman's first lessons sort of put the third year in a foul mood when it came to the subject of Astronomy. She'd had three different teachers in three different years, and well the fact that the woman seemed to not count spirits as having knowledge to teach them, kind of discredited herself. She was listening though when the woman asked questions about Jupiter's moons. Yes, she knew them, because despite her distaste of the professor, she did value the material and her grades. However, as others had already answered the question and since there was little point in repeating answers, Skylar merely wrote them in fancy lettering on her parchment: Callisto, Europa, Ganymede and Io. Fancy lettering mostly because it took up more time to bubble in her letters.
Looking up after finishing her lettering of Jupiter's moons, she blinked as she realized the Professor had moved on to talking about Moon Phases, only she didn't really talk or lecture them but wanted them to research about them. Flipping open her textbook, she jotted down five or so points she found:
SPOILER!!: notes
- Eight phases
- Designate how much the moon is illuminated, as well as the shape of the illuminated part
- New moon is when the moon is not illuminated or visible at all
- Complete cycle takes approximately 29.5 days
- when there are two full moons in a month, the second one is called a 'blue moon'
And now they had to do an art project demonstrating what each of the moon phases looked like on a poster board. Going up to the front of the classroom to collect some supplies, she made her way back to her seat, looking around to see if there was anyone who maybe wanted to work with her. If not, that was cool too.

When Declan came back, Levi quickly jumped on the materials and began to inspect his brother's findings. "I think you should talk to her after class to make sure she's okay." This was for obvious reasons, of course. "Okay, so I can draw sort of badly, Brent said he'd be okay with painting and Declan--you can write the additional info." Levi tried not to say it--he did--but: "With your superior penmanship and all that. I wouldn't want to ruin it."
Levi plopped back down on his chair and using the poster board, he began to draw a relatively decent circle that he hoped would represent the full moon.

So all Brent had to do was paint? Cool, because that seemed like one of the easiest parts of this poster-making process. It was just a swipe of a paintbrush in the correct direction, and he was done! "You're brothers, yeah?" Brent asked, with a sudden extra interest. "I have a bro here, too. He's a second year Hufflepuff." Kane was probably around here somewhere, but Merlin only knew where. If there was a sugar-hyped blonde kid bouncing off the walls, that would likely be him.
Brent suddenly got the idea that there something super secretive going on here, but he had no idea what. These bros acted like they knew the professor long before she taught this class, and apparently she was like two different people. Brent side-eyed the note Levi wrote him, then raised his eyebrows as the boy promptly disposed of it. Did Brent need to take out his wand or something? Who WAS this lady teaching them?
"Dude, what are you drawing?" he asked, watching Levi work. "Aren't we supposed to use those little spheres the professor provided?" Or did Brent just misunderstand things entirely? He was known to sometimes pay attention only half the time, and even then it needed to be something he was really interested in. He could have sworn he'd heard something about spheres, though.

Never one to lollygag Leon got right to work painting the spheres white. He picked up the first wooden ball and dipped his brush in the white paint and went to work..
"I mean.. I can paint.. " Leon said with a grin, "But you have much better handwriting than I do and so if we actually want to get credit for this, you better label and write things. " He pointed out with a smile as he kept putting white paint on the wooden sphere..
He glanced over at her as she spoke and he looked at the poster board.. "Yes, that makes much more sense. " He agreed as he finished one ball and carefully set to aside to dry, before picking up another one..
Kitty went up to collect the materials she'd need to build the moon phase demonstration. She was usually good with art, so this should be a breeze. The thing she liked most about it was it didn't really involve magic. Sure, she loved magic, but it was cool knowing that Muggles could do much of this activity if they tried.
One poster board, seven small wooden balls for the moon phases, and one much larger one for the sun, along with paint. As she was heading back, she caught sight of a younger student who she recognized as Skylar looking around at everyone. Did she want a partner?
"I'll partner with you if you want," she offered helpfully, coming up beside her with supplies in hand.

He did nod in acknowledgement after being introduced, however, and also in agreement at Declan's words. "Uh, well," He was almost whispering by now. "I'm not saying she's never that nice, but, eh--" Levi was not going to say it, but he could very well write it quickly in the corner of his parchment and showed it to Brent: She is never that nice. Then he ripped the portion of the parchment where he'd written, balled it and shoved it in his bag. Innocently, he shrugged at the Slytherin boy.

Brent suddenly got the idea that there something super secretive going on here, but he had no idea what. "You want me to talk to her?" Declan asked just in case he had misheard. Surely, his brother must have meant Brent. "I don't know..." Declan swept the room to find the Professor. His brows knitted together and he chewed on his bottom lip, tapping the table with nervous fingers. "This could get messy."
"Anyway, yeah, we are brothers. We also have a younger sister. She's a hufflepuff!" So they had quite a bit in common. "Not a second year, though." Although sometimes she had the same temperament as one.
Declan's attention was drawn to what Levi was doing. He looked down at that and glanced up at Brent. "Uh....right. I think you're right. Unless Levi here is doing some extra credit stuff." Declan shrugged and practiced his perfect penmanship on a piece of parchment. "Anyway, ya'll let me know when it's my turn. Right now there's not much I can do but talk it out."

Juno watched as Leon painted. It was sort of calming the way he gently stroked the ball with the brush. He was definitely an artist. AND he barley got any paint on him. Juno always got pain all over her whenever she painted anything. She shook her head and got back to work.
"I do have pretty good hand writing." She said with a wink. But she was in agreement, he was far better at painting and she was a much faster writer. "Your wish is my command, babe." That line slipped out before she could stop herself. It made her grin for a whole other reason. Her dad always said that to her mom. As far back as she could remember, it was either that or 'as you wish' from the Princess Bride movie.
Juno nodded her head in agreement when he said holding the chart made more sense that way. So she went ahead and put little dots where each ball would be placed, then about an inch above the dots drew a line. This line would be where the labels would go. Since the yellow ball was to be at the top, this meant that the ball directly below it would be the New Moon phase. She neatly wrote out 'New Moon,' then on the ball that would be 180° on the opposite side, she labeled it 'Full Moon.' On the slot to the left of new moon, she wrote out 'Waxing Cresent,' and then to the right of new moon she wrote 'Waning Cresent.'
Juno nudged Leon gently, "Hows this so far? Make sense?" She was such a perfectionist sometimes.....

Levi continued to make poor circle-y shapes until Brent spoke, mercifully putting an end to the waste of time and embarrassment his drawling skills were. To be clear, he also felt quite embarrassed for having overlooked the spheres and also for misunderstanding the instructions, or rather, making a whole set of new instructions, himself.
However--"I for sure was trying to do some extra credit work, Declan is right." His brother CLEARLY knew him so well. "But this just won't do, so let's just stick to the instructions." Levi discarded his drawings with a quick flick of his wand and a whispered incantation. He then began to carefully allocate the spheres on the poster board and then wrote down the name of each phase on different pieces of parchment. Levi made sure to just below each sphere, arranging them in the order in which the phases occurred so Brent could paint accordingly. He followed Brent's notes, too, to avoid any more embarrassing mistakes. He was pretty sure he could already feel a stress induced rash spreading on the back of his knees. "Alright, mate, you are up." Carefully, he pushed the poster board to the boy.
The Gryffindor did not feel like maybe his contribution had been enough but surely arranging the spares and distributing the tasks between the three ought to count for something. "Well, you are better at Astronomy than I am," Levi pointed out in a whisper, at his brother. Declan HAD gotten decent marks in his Astronomy OWL exam, he must have. "Soooo she probably likes you better."

Leon picked up the second ball and slowly started to brush paint over the side that he wasn't holding.. so far he just had paint on the tips of his fingers where he had to hold the ball in order to paint the bottom! Surely.. there was a magical way to do this right?
But seeing as the professor had supplies out it must mean that they had to do it the muggle way.
Sigh
He carefully turned the ball and grinned over at Juno as she spoke.. "Yes you do! Which is why I do this. " he said as he motioned to the nearly finished white painted sphere before blushing a bit at her words. "Why thank you genie. " he said with a wink back at her..
He glanced over at his girlfriend as she nudged him. He glanced over and nodded. "That looks perfect babe. " he said as he put down the second white coated ball..

Juno smiled at the little exasperated sigh that came out of Leon. She could tell he was feeling the same ways she was about the art project.
Juno grinned at his comment and his little blushy cheeks. She gently brushed a finger over the cheek closest to her. She chuckled, "You're welcome." She really enjoyed this...just being herself with him. It was the best feeling in the world. Before she had to be guarded because she didn't want her heart broken, but now. She couldn't help but be happy, even doing mundane school work.
She smiled up at him. "Thanks, Cap. Your moons are looking good too!" She beamed. They were a great team! But now back to labeling this thing!
To the left of waxing crescent, she wrote 'First Quarter,' and then to the left of that and to the right of full moon, she wrote 'Waxing Gibbous.' Then she shifted to the opposite side, and from the right of waning crescent she wrote 'Third Quarter,' and then to the right of that and the left of full moon she wrote 'Waning Gibbous.' Now to make the direction understandable she drew an arrow from New, to waxing crescent, to first quarter, to waxing gibbous, to full, to waning gibbous, to third quarter, to waning crescent, and finally back to new.
"Alright," she paused to nudge him, "How about now? Still make sense?" She really hoped it did because this was a little confusing for her and she knew all the phases of the moon!

Leon felt his cheeks heat up again as Juno brushed his cheek with her finger and he turned to smile warmly at her. He didn't say much, but the look on his face was very loving. He couldn't believe that this beautiful, smart, fast, spectacular girl was his..
He didn't feel worthy..
He picked up the third sphere and started to smear paint on that one too..
Gosh how many of these did he have to do? 9 including the sun? Ughhh.. why couldn't they use magic??!!! He carefully painted while Juno worked on their poster and he was just setting the third one down to dry when she nudged him again.
He turned his grey eyes from the unfinished wooden balls over to her poster.
"Yes! It looks perfect! You are doing an amazing job Quicksilver. " He said with a smile.

Olly was painting his little pretend moons. And the sun of course. That he was able to just paint completely yellow. The moons were a little harder because they were pretty small. The white represented the part of the moon that the sun was shining on. The black part was the other side of the moon that would not be visible to people on the Earth. He knew what each of them looked like, he just hadn't been familiar with all the names before today. But he made sure to double check the ones he didn't know in the textbook and write the names next to each moon. The top one was the new moon, then he wrote the rest of them clockwise from there.
Caroleena had been walking around to check on the students here and there as they work on the last projects. The blonde woman looked at the watch on her right wrist to see how much time was left. Time was up. She couldn't believe that time was up already.
Professor Salvatore walked towards the front of the classroom. "Time's up everyone!" she said rather loudly and the tone of her voice was still rather cheery. "If you haven't finished your project just come back during any free time you have and you can finish it." she said as she started walking towards the door. "Make sure your names are on your projects and if you worked in a group make sure both names are on poster board. Before leaving make sure everything is all cleaned up and your finished project is placed on my desk." she didn't feel like cleaning up after any of them, she thought they were old enough to clean up after themselves.
"After you're done just line up at the door and I'll escort you all to your next class."
OOC: Thank you all for attending the Astronomy lesson, I hope you enjoyed yourself! I'll leave the thread open for about 12-24 hours so you can finish up your RP's.
