Today was a night lesson. Professor Salvatore wasn't going to be teaching about the constellations but she would be teaching about something in our solar system that was just as important. As the students walk into the class room the tables were formed into a half circle looking towards the chalkboard and the black lake. The room was dimly lit and on each chair there were blankets just in case the students get cold. Once you walk into the room you'll see Professor Salvatore where she always is at the beginning of each class, at her desk, today she was reading a book.

Noelle should have gotten some of that tea. She wiggled her quill in her hand and took notes. She knew about the solar system. Her mom had taught her a song to remember them. My sun went to Mercury just to get to Venus. How on Earth can he afford to get to Mars? Jumping Jupiter, Saturn selling Saturdays, Uranus selling Neptune. My oh my.
It was catchy. Of course, that didn't help with the moons. And whoa. 67 moons on Jupiter? WHOA.
Noelle yawned, not because the class was boring, but because she was tired. She jotted more things down before looking around to see if anyone else knew one of Jupiter's moons. She quietly raised her hand. "Isn't Callisto one?" She remembered her mom saying something. A fable about that moon. But she couldn't remember what it was.

Oh! Juno knew that answer too! She quickly raised her hand, waiting to be called on. Once she was called on she replied, "That would be Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, Professor." She put her hand down, and gave Leon a quick grin.
Yep. She was an astronomy nerd. She couldn't help it. She had always loved the stars, probably because her middle name was Star. Hopefully he didn't think it was dorky. Suddenly, Juno was very embarrassed...but why should she be? She was a smart girl and that was better than not knowing anything.

Saturn had sixty-two moons? And Juniper Jupiter had sixty-seven? Woahhhhhh. That was a lot, that was FAR too many.
... Abey wanted sixty-seven moons too.
The actual question that was next asked pretty much went completely over Abey's head as he thought over a few things. When he spoke, it was not to give an answer, and alsohe might have definitely actually forgotten to raise his hand in his enthusiasm and just blurted out what he was thinking. Because Abey.
"Do the bigger planets have more because they're big?" Abey didn't know how that might of worked, but it did seem like the bigger the planet, the more moons. Was Mars bigger than Earth though? Honestly, not a clue. "And can moons have moons of their own?" And actually Abey had a lot MORE questions, like if the moons of gas planets were also made of gas, and how those planets knew when it was night-time when they had sooooooo many moons all around them (because obviously night was when the moon came out obviously), and how he could maybe get sixty-seven moons actually.
But he stopped at that point because actually he had gone off topic a little bit. Oh, and hand, Abey quickly raised his and lowered it again because actually he was already done speaking.

Leon knew this answer, but then again it seemed like so many other people knew it as well and since he didn't want to repeat the answer he just gave the Professor a smile and glanced over at Juno as she spoke..
That was his girl! He was always so proud of her, she was so smart and pretty and liked fighting and wanted to be an Auror and liked Quidditch,
Really It was like someone had handpicked her for him! He winked at her and nudged her gently.

Olly was really glad he hadn't attempted to answer that question because he would have just made a fool of himself. There were definitely more than ten moons. There were...a lot. He tried to keep track but couldn't add that fast in his head. He figured the exact number wasn't the most important because, as the professor said, new moons were being discovered all the time. Why did some planets get so many when they only had one?
He hadn't been able to answer Noelle's question on time before the answers were already being discussed. But it seemed she heard the next one because she was able to offer an answer. Olly, on the other hand, had no idea about the names of any of Jupiter's moons. Zeus' lovers? He'd been married to Hera, right? That was the extent of the knowledge Olly had on that subject.
Okay, they had moved on. Etta quickly took notes as the professor spoke, quite enjoying this topic. Planets, moon, space... she loved all of it. Quite interesting, wasn't it? Ooooooh, she knew the answer to that question. She waited as her fellow class-mates finished speaking before raising a hand.
"Europa, Io, Callisto and Ganymede." She answered, feeling quite pleased with herself for knowing the correct answer, as childish as that was. Etta couldn't help it. She simply continued with the doodling in her parchment.
The Slytherin shrugged, unabashed, and pulled her parchment closer to her so that she could get on with the note-taking. Salvatore was speaking, a LOT. It was utterly ridiculous that Jupiter had sixty-seven moons. Why did it need all those moons? She was aware that the planets didn't get to choose the numbers of moons they had but WOW. That was a bit extra.
And some dude could spot them back in 1610??? That was amazing. Muggles could be incredibly resourceful.
She didn't really know the names of the Galilean moons, however, and since it wasn't that easy to try and guess this one -- like that other one had been easy --, Daisy settled for watching the model of the planets Professor Salvatore had conjured.
Levi HAD actually accepted the tea Professor Salvatore had so nicely offered them. He did find her sudden niceness a little unnerving but the boy knew it wasn't his place to speculate or even judge. Though he did, by and large, as he sipped on his tea, and while everyone else's hands shot up all around him with answers he couldn't say knew much of. Or at all.
The taste of the tea, whatever it was, did help somewhat with the endless hits his ego was taking. He was noticing, and not for the first time during one of these lessons, that everyone else in the room seemed to be more knowledgeable in Astronomy than he was. At least, Levi felt like if they weren't, they did a very good job at pretending otherwise. He envied them, in part because he'd never been too good at pretending, but mostly, because he disliked the feeling of inadequacy.
When he finished his tea, he busied himself taking notes. Levi was not clear on whether or not the names repeated several times around the classroom were correct. But he did know that according to Greek mythology, Zeus had a great many lovers, and so he began to write down the names he remembered. It seemed quite pointless to name the rest of them, however, and he didn't want to remind Professor Salvatore that this sweet demeanor of hers wasn't actually common, so he remained silent in his note taking.

And now there was a lot more note-taking going on since there was so much information being given. As she tried to write it all down, Rula imagined what it would be like to live on a planet that had so many moons. It probably wasn't actually possible, but that was what imagination was for, right?
Would you be able to see the moons even in the day time? What would it be like to have multiple moons at night? Would they block all the stars? That'd be really sad, actually. Stars were a part of what made the night really pretty, not just the moon. So maybe having over sixty moons wouldn't be all that great.
Buuuut anyway, she had her notes written, and it looked like a few others had already answered the question pretty definitively, so once again she remained silent.

Mr. Botros has some really good questions. "Well sorta," she began answering his first question. "Depending on the planet's size and physical composition. The reason why larger planets have more moons is because their gravitational field has a larger reach so it basically acts like a huge magnet and it pulls celestial bodies, moons into the planet's orbit." Hopefully that answered his first question and hopefully he understood that. If not he could always ask her after class was over and head to her office.
"As for your second question, Mr. Botros." she paused for a second. "Yes, a moon is able to have it's own sub-satellite."
Moving on. "I was going to talk all of you through the phases of our moon but instead I want all of you to take the time to research and take notes on what you learn on your own about the phases of the moon." after that she would tell them some more information about the moons. "There's no need to be in groups for this but if you want you can group up. If you're confused by anything don't hesitate to ask."

Moons were not as exciting to talk about as stars. Balls of gas. Shooting stars. Her favorite. Even more her favorite, "Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Never let it fade away." How awesome would it have been to catch a shooting star? ... figuratively speaking.
But no, moons it was. Something that didn't typically interest Noelle. The professor mentioned groups and there was no way that Noelle was not going to be in a group without Olly. So sliding closer, she grinned at him. A bit more awake now.
Pulling her parchment and quill closer, she wiggled it. "So what do you know about moon phases?" She asked Olly while taking a peek in her book to see if she could find anything useful.

Olly had been trying to listen, he really had. But then there was a lot of talking about moons that he didn't really understand and though his eyes remained open and fixed on the professor, his ears kind of stopped hearing things. At least until he felt someone slide closer to him and heard Noelle's voice. He took some more drinks of his tea, hoping that would help wake him up more.
He didn't know what they were doing but Noelle was asking him about moon phases and he trusted her. "Well there's a full moon and a new moon. And, uh, a crescent." He didn't bother to take out his own book and instead simply peered over Noelle's shoulder at her book. How'd he do? He knew there were more but couldn't think of them at the moment.

Juno was kinda excited they were going to be talking about the phases of the moon. The moon happened to be one of her most favorite celestial orbs and the phases where just so interesting to her.
But first....she needed a partner and she knew just who she wanted. Her boyfriend. She leaned back in her chair, crossed her legs, and leaned into Leon, whispering in his ear, "Are you the moon? Because even when it's dark you still seem to shine." She looked up at him with a huge goofy grin. "OHOH, I got another one hold one," she paused to think about it for a moment, then with the most serious face possible, "I must be the Sun and you must be Earth, 'cause the closer we get, the hotter you become." With that one it was harder to keep a straight face, and she just started cracking up.
Astrological pick up lines.....were the best.
Once she calmed down enough, she sighed, "In other words...want to partner up?" She nudged him gently with her shoulder and grinned.

Dude. Brent didn't want to do research on anything. He just wanted to sit here and listen to stuff people already knew. Research didn't sound fun at all, and it just wasn't the right time of day for Brent to be alert enough for research. He looked at his textbook, quill, and parchment. Too bad they didn't make a research quill. It seemed like they had a quill for everything else these days.
He stared around a little longer before finally cracking open his textbook and flipping through the pages. Phases of the moon...phases of the moon... Ah ha! Brent located the page then settled back in his seat to read. Hmm...this New Moon phase looked pretty interesting. Brent thought it was pretty cool how the moon just looked like it wasn't there at all, but it was really just some trick of the Sun. Well, kind of. Finally, he picked up his quill and began to write.
Phases of the Moon
New Moon: This is when the moon can't be seen from Earth, because the Sun is shining on the part we can't see from our planet.
Waxing Crescent: This is when it looks like the moon looks like it's growing. It's really not, because the moon is a big rock and can't just grow and shrink. It's really just appearing more and more to us on Earth.

Was it just Charlotte or were classes a snooze lately? Even if she hadn't been in her own world, preoccupied with thoughts of the people that she cared about who were currently missing, lost, and absent, she'd find it hard to focus in this lesson. Moon phases. Research.
And no Henry to make it go better. Charlotte wrote the phases down, she knew them and the order they went in too. Before she'd started Hogwarts she'd had to do an essay about Hesper Starkey and the discovered effects of moon phases on potion making, so at least a bit of it had remained with her.

Research? Daisy looked at the Professor, thinking that she really must have heard it wrong. No offence but was there any point in them attending classes if then they had to do research on the subject? Look, it would be much simpler if Salvatore just regurgitated information and she took notes.
OR if they got to use those telescopes or something. Daisy assumed that that was still to come. After all, they could do research during the day, right? Anyway, they were definitely researching the phases of the moon. FUN!

One elbow resting on the desk, the Slytherin lazily turned the pages on her textbook until she found what she was looking for. Lunar phase. Eh. Maybe she should have taken the offer for tea. Even if she had gotten poisoned, at least she wouldn't be here anymore. Still, the moon was pretty enough and it couldn't hurt to know more about it; she just didn't understand why they had to research it in class. Nevertheless, the girl read on, self-inking quill on her hand, ready to take any notes.

There were cornier ones out there and some really, really bad ones. But she only used the good ones, Leon deserved the best. "Good. Because I can't work without you, darling." She batted her eyelashes, giggling.
RIGHT. WORK. They must work. "I take it you don't know much about the Phases of the moon? Let me see if there is an easy way to explain it." She paused for a moment, closing her eyes trying to think of a good way to explain it. "Ok, so Lunar Phases or Phases of the moon is how much sunlight can be seen from the surface of the moon each night. I am sure you have heard the different names. New moon to full moon." Juno took down a few notes as she explained, though she was sure Leon knew all of this already. She just wanted to make sure because it could be pretty confusing.
As she looked down to write notes, a piece of hair fell into her face. She left it there, already giving up on it because she knew it would just keep falling. "Does that help remind you at all?" She asked, still writing notes.

"Yessss, but not about the moon.. " He said as he swallowed a bit.
Juno couldn't help but laugh when he called her sweetie. Of all things he could have picked. But it was cute with way. "Well, that's good to know. We always have a built in partner. At least in the classes we take together." She gave him a wink.
At that next comment she blushed and nudged him. "Oh, I'm sorry! Would you like me to transfigure myself into a Murtlap instead? Those creepy little buggers will make you want to concentrate." She said with a giggle. She liked this new dynamic between them. Teasing was always fun.
She grinned, "All correct except for Blue moon. With a blue moon you just have two full moons in one month. So not technically a phase but at the same time kinda." She said with a wink and a smile. Grinning, she asked "There are eight phases of the moon. You have already said three. Do you, Oh Captain, My Captain, remember the rest?" Juno knew them but she wanted to see just how much her handsome guy knew.
She continued writing down things as they were talking but when he said that, she looked at the hair in her face and grinned.
She looked up at him, biting her bottom lip, "Yes, well...that will have to be a subject for later." She smiled and looked back down at the paper, hair still in her face.

Brent was pretty pleased with the notes he'd managed to write down so far. He hadn't really been all that interested in a note-taking activity, so he was doing really good to have something down on parchment for the first two phases. He put down his quill and flipped another page in his textbook.
First Quarter...hmm. It was weird how a quarter of something was usually a fourth of it, but not when it came to moon phases. This moon looked like it was half of a moon. Brent picked up his quill and wrote down something about the First Quarter moon. Another flip of the page brought him to another kind of waxing moon, and he took notes on it, too.
Phases of the Moon
New Moon: This is when the moon can't be seen from Earth, because the Sun is shining on the part we can't see from our planet.
Waxing Crescent: This is when it looks like the moon looks like it's growing. It's really not, because the moon is a big rock and can't just grow and shrink. It's really just appearing more and more to us on Earth.
First Quarter: You would think this would be a fourth of the moon, but no. This is when you see half of the moon.
Waxing Gibbous: So what I can gather from this phase is that again, the moon looks like it is growing. However, we can just see more and more of it. The moon is about to be full during this phase.
Levi had somehow stifled several yawns, which had taken so much of his single-minded focus it had taken several moments for his brain to catch up with his ears. When he did, the boy blinked several times, in mild confusion. Research? Did that mean they could go to the library...?
Well, apparently not. Textbook, then.
He went through the pages until the found the moon's phases.

He was not exactly pleased with his notes but then he was rarely pleased about anything related to the class. But at least his handwriting looked nice. No one would ever be able to accuse Levi Kenning of having poor penmanship.

Things were really coming along now. Brent kind of wished he had a partner, though. It was kind of late for that kind of thing now, though, since he was already halfway finished with going through the phases of the moon. Speaking of which, he probably didn't have a whole lot of time left, so he turned back to his textbook and read some more.
He found it interesting how the Full Moon was pretty much the opposite of the New Moon---in appearance and definition. He jotted down a few things then made note of that 180 degree turn. Basically, from here on out, everything just did the same as before but in the opposite direction. He made note of that, too.

Full Moon: This is the moon phase where we see the full, entire moon in all its glory. The entire moon is visible from Earth, and it looks like a near-perfect circle in the sky. The moon has moved a full 180 degrees from how it was in the New Moon phase, which is why it is fully visible.
At this point, the phases basically repeat, but the moon just appears to shrink away in the opposite direction as it now gets smaller and smaller in appearance.
While the students were researching moon phases, Caroleena had been getting some supplies out for the students. She had some black poster boards with a giant hole cut into the middle of each board. Professor Salvatore put the boards on the table near her desk at the front of the classroom. She went back towards the back of the classroom and grabbed some medium sized wooden balls, Caroleena also grabbed some larger wooden balls. She also grabbed some paint brushes, some yellow-orange paint, white and black paints and places them all on the table.
"Time's up everyone!" she said in another cheery tone, still very not like her. "I didn't teach you myself about the phases of the moon because I believe that some learning in the classroom needs to be done by the students themself." Explanation was over on that part, she knew that there were students that didn't agree with that and figured they should know why it was happening.
"Before you can leave for the day I would like for you guys to place the phases of the moon onto one of these poster boards. Now there are medium sized wooden spheres, you're going to use those as the moons. On each moon you will have to paint the each phase you just researched. The larger wooden sphere will represent the sun. For the moons one side of the moon should be painted white and other side of the moon should be painted black. I think we all know what color the sun should be painted." Caroleena paused and picked up an already finished project. "This is what your finished project should look like." She said holding up the poster board. "For a little extra credit you can add some fact about each phase that you find interesting and write it near each phase on your board." she said as she sat back down at her desk. "I also have a chart for each phase of the moon posted here on the board just in case some of you want a larger reference than what your textbook has to offer."
