Today was a night lesson. Professor Salvatore wasn't going to be teaching about the constellations but she would be teaching about something in our solar system that was just as important. As the students walk into the class room the tables were formed into a half circle looking towards the chalkboard and the black lake. The room was dimly lit and on each chair there were blankets just in case the students get cold. Once you walk into the room you'll see Professor Salvatore where she always is at the beginning of each class, at her desk, today she was reading a book.

Night time lessons were her favorite, did Professor Salvatore know? She wasn't all droopy and tired from getting up extremely early and she already had a whole day of lessons under her belt and she got to see the sky full of stars, which was her favorite. It was so beautiful. SO BEAUTIFUL. More beautiful now that she'd survived that freaky trip into...wherever she'd been taken that day on the bridge with Etta. Yeah, she'd much rather be here in class tonight where things were familiar.
"Hello Professor!" The brunette gave her usual curtsy and went to find herself a good seat in the middle of the room. The best seat. Now all she had to do was set out her things and wait for her people to arrive.

Janelle arrived for Astronomy class, stifling a yawn. She was a little tired, but determined to perk up for the lesson. These nighttime classes always seemed to throw her off schedule. As she entered the room, Janelle managed to change her yawn into a smile. "Hello Professor", she said, as she spotted the Astronomy leader at her desk.
As usual, there was little evidence to cue her to the topic of the day's lesson. Janelle had plenty of seats to choose from, since she was pretty early to class. She gave a "hello" to the younger Slytherin (Junia) who was already seated and plopped herself down at the nearest desk. Taking out her materials, Janelle waited for class to start.

The best part about Astronomy was that a lot of the classes were held at night, which meant perfect excuses for staying up even later than usual, and also there was no worrying about waking up late or having to go through the stress of getting ready for the day, because the day had already happened actually.
The worst part about Astronomy was that Abey was nowhere near as good at it as he wanted to be, given that it was essentially about what was in the sky, and he loved the sky. This lesson required smarts that Abey was pretty sure he would never have actually. But the lessons were usually fun enough that he wasn't totally discouraged from the subject; plus, he liked the art they sometimes did.
"Hi Professor!" Abey chirped as he entered the classroom, and immediately spotted Juni, because of course he did. He went ahead and took a seat NEAR her. Near enough that he could lean across and get help from her if he needed to, but far enough that meant her friends could sit next to her if they wanted; it was less scary to do that now that he had made other friends of his own too. See, also this time he sat in a different seat than hers, and didn't try to squish onto the same one. But he hadn't actually tried to do that since that one Astronomy lesson anyways actually.
"Junebug!" That was his way of saying hello. Hello, Junebug.

"Evening, Professor." Juno said, with a smile and wave as she walked into the Astronomy classroom. It was an evening class this time, which lead her to hope they were going to be doing some star gazing! YAY FOR THAT!
Juno quickly found a seat with two seats on either side of her, hoping one would soon be filled by a specific seventh year. She grinned just thinking about him.

Etta entered the classroom, looking rather cheerful. It seemed like this class would be rather interesting and different. A night class! How exciting was that? Would they get to study the stars? AND. There were blankets too. The smile on her face turned into a grin as she greeted the professor before walking towards an empty seat. "Hello, Professor Salvatore."
She plopped down comfortably on a chair that was closer to the front of the room and set her bag on the floor, eagerly waiting for class to begin.

Astronomy was not one of Olly's favorite subjects. But he was trying very hard because he did not want to fail his Astronomy OWL (even though he would not necessarily be surprised if he did). He also wasn't really looking forward to the lesson being at night. He preferred when they were during the day like a normal class. The night was a time for sleeping, and it was much harder to concentrate when he was tired.
"Hello professor," He said with a smile before going to find a seat. He still missed Professor Flamsteed and still instinctively looked for a lint roller before each lesson. Not that he had anything against this new professor. She was pretty cool too.
Levi couldn't say he enjoyed the prospect of Astronomy. A little because he preferred to spend his nights sleeping or reading, but mostly because he was just not good at it, no matter how hard he felt he tried.
Stars and planets were pretty and cool and pretty cool until you suddenly needed to learn constellations and just how many moons Saturn had. Which, he could never remember, coincidentally. Did it even have any???
"Hello, Professor." Levi took his usual spot in the back and prepared for feeling like a failure for the duration of the less. Fun, fun, fun.

Charlotte was a wreck. Absolute wreck. When people you care about go missing right in front of you, and then you hear about other people you care about also disappearing, it would be expected for you to be a wreck, right? So she hadn't been sleeping, and hadn't needed to wake up especially for the class either.
"Hello professor." Charlotte sat down somewhere, not even worrying about where or who with or anything.
And normally she'd be so excited for a night class. but who would she work with now?

The woman looked at the time on her watch and looked around at all the students that were currently here. Not a huge turn out but at least she had some students to teach today and at least there were students that were willing to learn at this time of night. She knew very well that all the students were most likely tired out from the day. Caroleena stood up from her desk and walked to the back of the classroom and closed the door. "Good evening everyone." she smiled as she walked back to the front of her desk. "I know the time of night is a little later than what I've been teaching my lessons but I figure a change was in order. If any of you want some tea to keep you awake I have some tea over there." she said in a sweet tone, which was very unlike her. Professor Salvatore pointed over towards a table with some tea pots full of hot water and many boxes of tea.
"For tonight's lesson we will be learning about the moons in our solar system. In order to get to know about the other moons in our solar system there's some information that we need to cover about our moon. " she paused momentarily. She had a tendency of doing so to make sure students were paying attention but to also allow any students that were writing knows could catch up. "Simply, what is a moon? A moon is natural satellite that orbits a planet or minor planet. That being said there is no established limit on what is considered a moon. Really any celestial body in space that has an orbit is able to have a moon." Another pause for anyone taking notes.
"Earth's moon," she began at she pointed towards the sky, the moon was currently visible in the night sky. "is 238,900 miles away from us. Our moon is about 4.53 billion years old and has a twenty-seven day orbit period."
She would get into more information as soon as she got the first question out of the way before moving on about the other planets.
"We have eight planets in our solar system, can anyone tell me about how many moons are currently in our solar system?

Tea? That means sounded good to Olly. So while the professor started talking about moons, Olly quietly made his way to the table and worked on making himself a cup of tea. He was still paying attention of course. He could listen while making tea. Some of the information about moons was fairly straightforward. But some of it was new to him. With his tea in hand Olly made his way back to his desk and jotted down a few notes.
How many moons were in their solar system? Olly had no idea. More than eight probably. He knew some planets had more than one moon. Were there some planets without any moons at all? He wasn't really sure about that. As for how many moons he thought there were he'd probably guess 10 maybe? 12? But he really had no idea. So he just quietly sipped his tea and let other people answer.
Tea? No, thank you. Daisy wrapped her blanket tighter around her legs and observed the Professor suspiciously. Professor Salvatore was rarely this ... nice and tea was the optimal way to poison someone. Nah, she'd force herself to remain awake and avoid any liquid offered by the staff, thank you.
And if she fell asleep, would it really be that bad?
Lazily, she took notes on the information that was being shared with them; she still didn't know if she was taking Astronomy after this year but she had OWLs to pass so she should at least try. Or really try. As for how many moons there were in the solar system, she had no idea. There were eight planets, right? So surely there weren't that many moons? Did all planets have a moon? Wait, wasn't there one planet that had like a gazillion of them? The Slytherin raised her hand; she had no idea of what the answer was buuuuuut ... well, she was guessing. "Is it twenty moons?"

Noelle had been perched next to Olly even before the professor had started speaking. She'd said hello to the professor but not many others. It was no offense to anyone, she was just tired... worried.. and just wanted her bed. After this class, she was going to sleep. .... Wait no... She was on patrol duty tonight. Merlin.
It was hard for her to come out of her of her thoughts when the Professor had started speaking. She blinked and tried to wake herself up some more to pay attention. Something about the solar system. And planets. 8 planets. And moons.
Moons... like sheep jumping over the moon. The old tale that her mum used to tell her to get her to sleep. One sheep jumped over the moon. ... drifts off... She felt movement next to her and jerked awake out of her almost sleep. Olly was drinking tea.
What was the question?
Noelle poked Olly. "What was the question?" She asked in a whisper. She figured there was a question since no one was talking.. not even the professor at the moment.

Ohhh! This was a question he actually sorta knew.. Ish..
Leon raised his hand and spoke.. "There are somewhere around One Hundred and eighty moons in the solar system.. ish " He added, seeing as there were asteroids that might have counted as moons..
His mother moved Astronomy and things of such nature, and Leon had a head full of fact like this..
Though this was the first time it had come in handy.

Salvatore was offering them TEA?! This really WAS an unexpected lesson. Kane smiled at her and decided to take her up on her offer, walking over and brewing himself a cup of black tea before returning to his seat. His classmates had already started answering the question, and Kane honestly had NO idea how many moons there were.
A lot was his true answer, but he knew he had to try and give her SOMETHING specific.
So, there was their moon, plus two around Mars (it was two, right?!) and then...uh, a lot around Jupiter and Saturn. He was just going to guess. He raised his hand. "Um, a hundred?" he said. He knew that wasn't right...but points for trying, maybe?

Wait, how many moons WERE there anyway? That information wasn't something she'd ever learned before, so it was very appropriate she thought for the professor to bring it up. Of course she knew the Earth had one moon, but beyond that she couldn't be certain. Kitty raised her hand. "I don't know, Professor," she admitted.

Juno tried not to beam too much when Leon called her Jun. They were in the middle of class! She had to behave. She gently nudged him back with her shoulder. He was too cute.
Juno knew this answer! She quickly raised her hand and waited to be called on. Once she was she answered, "There are at least 146 classified moons and I believe there are another 27 that are waiting for their official confirmation. So that would put the number at around 173 moons." Yeah....she was a little bit of a nerd.

Moons.
Char didn't mind the moon. She always thought it was a sort of... comforting thing. You could rely on it, it was always there ever you expected it to be. She supposed other moons were much the same really, and she wasn't sure how many there were, didn't the number keep changing?
Her hand went up.
"I don't think anyone knows for sure how many moons there are, professor. The official count changes all the time as new ones are discovered, so there are probably actually hundreds, maybe even thousands, muggles haven't got the technology to be exact about it, because of orbits and stuff, if you don't know something exists then you can't exactly know where it should be. So any reported number should be followed by 'that we know about so far'."
Maybe she would have some tea later, but for now she was okay.

So that Charlottle girl pretty much knew everything, didn't she? And even if she DIDN'T know the right answer, literally everything she said sounded like she'd opened her mouth and a Ravenclaw had jumped out. Why wasn't she in Ravenclaw anyway? Hmm. Must be that whole 'traits are more common for another house instead' thing that Brent figured applied to him and all, too. After all, he'd been sure he'd be a Gryffindor...
Anyway...moons. Brent had no idea how many moons were in the solar system. "I don't know. Maybe like a hundred and fifty or something?" he guessed, raising his hand. This was kind of like those games he'd played at birthday parties as a little kid. You know, where the mom puts a ton of Bertie Botts into a jar, and the person who got the closest guess got a prize? Yeah. This was totally like that.
How many moons? Etta thought for a few moments. The Hufflepuff remained quiet until someone else had finished answering the question before raising a hand.
"Most of the planets in our outer solar system have moons orbiting them.. and I've read that smaller asteroids have moons orbiting them as well.. so one has been able to come up with an exact number, professor. Many are yet to be discovered, I think." Short and simple, yes? She leaned back against her seat and started to doodle on her parchment, waiting for the class to move on.

It was way late, but truth be told Skylar didn't mind because they actually had legit reason to be out of bed and thankfully her morning classes the next day had been pushed back to accommodate for the unordinary time of the Astronomy class.
Propping her hands under her chin, she pinched her cheeks lightly to perk up just a bit, as the Professor began the lesson. Talking about moons. Ugh, what was it with professors asking questions that she was ninety percent sure they were supposed to teach the material before asking the questions? It was like a pre-quiz. And it was bloody annoying. As if she knew how many moons were present in the solar system. None technically, since people were required to wear pants / space suits and therefore couldn't moon anyone, but Skylar kept those thoughts to herself because it was not the answer the teacher was looking for.
"Moons don't just orbit the eight major planets though, Professor," Skylar said upon raising her hand. "They also orbit minor planets and dwarf planets, which are indeed also part of solar system and it would be counterintuitive to exclude them from our discussion just because they don't orbit one of the major eight planets. So basically, of the major planets, there's over three hundred moons, but counting ALL the moons present in our solar system, there could be thousands or even millions of moons."

Rula appreciated the offer of tea, but she was going to pass on it for now. She was actually feeling pretty awake and alert right now, and she didn't want a cup of tea getting in the way of taking notes or worrying about trying not to spill it all over her notes.
Speaking of which, she was writing down quite a few of them right now as the professor spoke. And a couple quick ones as other students provided their answers to the question. She agreed with the ones that said that whatever number was the official one, it probably wouldn't stay that way forever. There was a lot they didn't know and hadn't yet discovered out there in space after all.
Since she didn't really have anything new to add, she remained silent.

It didn't take long for Abey to find himself completely and utterly out of his depth in this lesson actually, but he had expected as much. Exactly how anyone could remember figures such as how many moons were in the solar system or, say, the distance between one planet and another, or how hot the sun was, or exactly what a light year was, he had no idea. And he had actually tried to look through his textbook and everything, on one of his better days, but the information he had managed to read about, he hadn't had a chance of retaining. Mostly he enjoyed looking at the illustrations.
Sooooooo, when that question came, Abey settled with not answering, because he had absolutely nooooooo idea actually. Instead, he listened to what everyone else had to say (a little confusion, because there were a million different answers), and looked towards where the Professor had pointed and stared out at the moon in the sky. Would the Professor lady talk about what made the moon so shiny? Abey hoped so; he had always been curious, but never thought to ask anyone.

"Yes, Skylar that's very correct. I'm not excluding any of the dwarf planets at all. It was merely an estimate of about how many planets are in our solar system. If it sounded like I was singling out any of the other planet or any asteroids then I'm sorry but that wasn't my intention."

"In that general area there are about that many moons."

Caroleena pointed towards Charlotte seeing as her hand had gone up. "Correct. With each technological advances there are more and more moons are being discovered everyday. I'm sure and this is just my opinion that one day the muggles and the wizarding world will know exactly how many moons are in our solar system but until now it's just an estimate." She didn't think it would happen in her lifetime though, maybe in theirs.

"Yes, Miss. Darcy, that's very true."

Honestly! "Thank you for your honesty and not just blurting out a wrong answer." She loved honesty from students.

"You're about right."

His mother moved Astronomy and things of such nature, and Leon had a head full of fact like this..
Though this was the first time it had come in handy.
"Very close to the number that they have today."

Probably not.
"Sadly no, there's many more than just twenty moons."
"The question I just asked was more of an estimate of what information that we know." Maybe next time she should speak clearer so that the student could understand it better but she thought her wording of the question would be easy enough to understand. There was a mental note for next time. "There are many moons being discovered as we speak. With that being said, planet wise, yes I'm talking about the eight planets in our solar system right now," Caroleena paused for a moment. She took out her wand and made models all eight of the planets appear from the ceiling. "Mercury and Venus have no moons. We all know Earth has one moon. Mars has two moons, Jupiter has sixty-seven moons." A big planet needed a lot of moons. "Saturn has sixty-two moons. Uranus has twenty-seven moons and lastly Neptune has fourteen moons."
She wanted to go back to Jupiter. "Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system and out of all of the planets it has the most moons but there are four very important moons that can we see by a telescope and binoculars. These moons are called the Galilean moons, they're the four largest moons of Jupiter. These moons were discovered by Galileo Galilei in January 1610. In March 1610 Galileo recognized the moons as satellites. This was the first time in history that there was an object that orbits another planet." Honestly she could have a whole lesson on just these moons alone. "The names of these moons are derived from the lovers of the Greek God, Zeus." The woman walked back to the front of her desk and leaves against it.
"Can anyone name all four of the Galilean moons?"
OOC: Class will continue in about 24 hours.
