Default Arithmancy Lesson #1: Kundalini & Tantric Numerology

The classroom looks quite different today. Instead of the normal worktables there is a circle of meditation pillows on the ground. Small personal use lap desks that those familiar with muggle technology will recognize as being laptop desks are situated next to each of the pillows. A small collection of handmade metal bowls sit near the cushion that Professor Greyvson lounges atop. The bowls have lit candles behind them and the scent light floral scent of the burning lavender and jasmine incenses permeate the air. It is almost as if Professor Vance had donated some of her incense for the class.

A small chalkboard sits on the wall behind Professor Greyvson with simple instructions on the board. Please take a seat on one of the meditation pillows, class will begin momentarily. Resting on one of the yet unused pillows is Yeti, Professor Greyvon’s lab puppy and class mascot.

Class Progress:
Task/Question 1: Express what you want to cover in Cultural Arithmancy & something you feel would be covered in those sections
Question 2: What are these bowls?
Information / Q3: Meditation & Balancing Chakras - semi-personalized responses + textbook of info if you want it.

OOC: Class has yet to begin, I wanted to give you guys some time to post. Please feel free to join, jsut post as if you have already arrived. class will continue in about 8-12 hours

The room had been set up in a meditation like circle. Noelle had no idea what mediation had to do with Arthimancy. She sighed. This was not one of her favorite classes but she enjoyed the professor who always seemed to surprise them.

Noelle sat down and looked at the laptop in front of her. She knew what they were but she'd never actually used one. Mum didnt allow too many muggle gadgets inside the house despite her father being muggle.

Noelle looked into the book and saw Reincarnation & Arithmancy. Now that seemed interesting. "Reincarnation & Arithmancy seems cool." Noelle mentioned in the midst of everything else.

She really wanted to get close to that lab puppy and just love on him. A little lap lab puppy. How cute would that be? Merlin she missed her pups at home.

And moving on....
Noelle's eyes glanced at the bowl and the wooden thing. She liked the letters painted on the sides of it. "Is that.... like one of those herb crushers that they used back in the day?" Like waaaay back in the day?

She took a seat next to Tenacius and then spotted Derf waving at her. OH! HEY! FRIEND! Olivia waved at Derf. His smiling face always seemed to brighten her day. He was just such a nice young kid! She looked forward to sharing some more classes with him and Zoryn. Nice troublmakers indeed! She remained silent and continued her notetaking as she listened to other students offer possible solutions to questions.

As the professor pointed to the bowl, Olivia turned her head slightly. She had seen one of those before back at home. Her father had one for mixing different spices or crushing something. Though it certainly wasn't nearly as fancy or exquisite as the bowl before them. She wondered what the writing meant. If only she could read whatever language it was written in. Though back to the main point. What had he called it? A pestle? Ah! "I agree. It does look like a mortar and pestle...." she said, nodding in agreement with Kat (a girl who had mentioned this) but what were they going to do with it? Perhaps they were going to relate to diviniation to leaf reading? "Are we perhaps going to use the mortal and pestle to crush something and relate it to leaf-reading but..?" She had no idea but offered a guess.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta made notes in her notebook, already feeling like this class wasn't going to be very easy for her. She had no idea what half of those words meant at all.. which was a little worrying. Idly staring at her book, she pondered over the professor's question. How were they to know what those bowls were for? Wasn't the professor supposed to tell them that?

"They look like... um..." She started, raising a hand but.. No. Etta gave up. She abruptly turned silent, not wanting to repeat what others had said anyway. Instead, she just waited for the professor to explain.

More relaxing…

Well that did explain the reasoning for the scented incense, as well as the dog. Not that dog was always a bad scent and always noticeable to every nose. But Cass was only one member of the class and as she watched around her, she noticed more and more people coming into the room, including one girl seemingly trying to escape or something. And was that boy trying to sleep in the lesson? She wasn’t quite sure the professor wanted them THAT relaxed. Couldn’t really learn anything that way.

Soon enough class began and the topic was brought to the textbook they had looked into last lesson. Cassie remembered the book, but she had to think back on what all was there, finally opening up the textbook once more. She then looked over the table of contents again as students around her started, some of them definitely sounding interesting but then technically already given so she remained quiet.

As for the bowls that were shown, Cassie definitely was leaning towards a musical instrument. The metal seemed like it would be a noisy mortar and pestle. “I think they are musical in some way,” she mused after raising her hand.

There were a few things Natalia was annoyed with at this very moment. 1. why weren't they working with numbers yet? 2. why was she asking themwhat they wanted to learn. Shouldn't' she be telling them? Wasn't that what professors did? She had NEWTs to study for and needed to know exactly what was being taught, not what she wanted to learn. 3. Why weren't they doing calculations yet? 4. Did the professor really want to teach about Tantric Numerology? Wasn't that something that wasn't very arithmancy?

She sat quietly she really wasn't all about what the bowl was for. Unless it had magical numbers in it. that she could start using she was over it already. Her eyes stayed on her book and her doodles of hearts and flowers went on her parchment.

Skylar listened to her peers around her, trying hard to not think about the incense in the room which was more difficult than it seemed. Something connected to yoga? Interesting; the third year was definitely curious to see how yoga and meditation might relate to numbers. But moving on to ... brass bowls? How had she not noticed them before?

As for what use they might be for, Sky had no idea .... but she was pretty sure she'd seen a less decorative one in a magazine or something. Raising her hand tentatively, Sky spoke up "It looks like a mortar and pestle which is used to crush things up, I believe, but I'm not sure what that might have to do with today's task?" She admitted the last bit quietly

Janelle took a moment to look at the bowls in question and then raised her hand. "I agree. It looks like a mortar and pestle. Maybe we'll use them to crunch some numbers." Janelle didn't mean to be cheeky, but she couldn't suppress a smile. "Sorry Professor, I just couldn't resist that one. Seriously though, maybe we can use them to crush something.........to make incense. That can put us in the whole yoga, focused, ready for anything mood."

Imogen didn't know how to respond for a moment when so many of her students had believed the bowls to be well...potions materials? That was quite a bewildering thing to the blonde witch. It would have given her cause for concern still, there were far more pressing matters to attend to. Janelle’s addition of crunching up numbers did get a grin out of Imogen. ”Now that would be a handy way to calculate things…too bad we can’t just make a potion to solve our arithmetic for us eh?” she gave the seventh year an almost cheeky grin as she looked at the other answers she was getting.

Everyone was so…ready with answers, sure some were bizarre but it was the effort that counted to her. Everyone was trying and that was all that really mattered to her.

Herb crusher. She hadn’t heard that used to describe a mortar and pestle in a long time…heck, she hadn’t really used a mortar and pestle except in dire circumstances in the longest of times…the last time was likely when she had accidentally triggered a curse and lost all of her hair.

Darn Norse ruins…how would she have known it was cursed when nothing was written on the walls and she had simply stumbled upon it? She was just glad that her family wasn’t there to see her looking like a relative of none other than the only truly hairless wonder…Voldemort. Seriously, from the illustrations in the history books she had read her looked more akin to a Uncle Fester…with quite an atrocious case of botched rhinoplasty…seriously, he was one of the many that likely went a little too hard and heavy with the surgeon…Oh yes, I intentionally asked to look like a snake…because of my insane relationship with my snake.…Olivia Holden’s voice snapped her out of her reverie and she couldn’t help but give the girl a small smile.

”That does sound like a rather interesting idea for a joint lesson, I would have to speak with Laurel Vance about that…” she smiled softly, ”however the tea for today is just something I offer for students whenever possible, it is after all one of my vices…I have it almost too much I must admit.” she looked around again to the sea of raised hands and continued to respond to the answers given to her.

"Oh," dog's were allergic to chocolate?!?!?! That must be TERRIBLE! Zoryn gave the pup a look of absolute pity. "Sorry dog, you can't have this. You might die," she nodded, handing the chocolate over to Derf instead.

Car-what treats? Zoryn didn't understand any of the words her Professor was saying. Mostly because her Professor was saying a lot of words. And Zoryn didn't really feel the need to listen to them. But she did take a handful of those treats and begin feeding them to the little doggy.

This would be much more fun than paying attention in class, she decided.

The first question the Professor asked wasn't one Zoryn could answer. Were they, like, supposed to read the text book? Because Zoryn forgot to do that.

But she couldn't resist offering an answer to the second question they were posed with. "They're royal cereal bowls," she nodded. That's what they looked like anyways.

If Zoryn ever became a queen, she'd definitely eat cereal in THOSE.

She was hoping that she would get a little better though, hoping was the big word in that questions to be honest. "They look like decent bowls to have some nice cereal in...." Hattie mused with a little smile. They looked like they would hold a nice portion of cereal, one that would fill someone up for the day. She had a feeling that they weren't for putting cereal in though, so she really needed to think of a better answer.

"But.... maybe they are used to put stuff in to help with arithmancy?" That made more sense, though she would have used it for cereal.

The second answer was simply...bewildering? And positively hilarious. Still, she would have to urge Zoryn not to eat out of the bowls. That likely wouldn't taste good...brassy cereal would probably make anyone feel like they were suckling on old dirty coins. That really didn’t seem like it would be a good idea…or even fun at all. Metallic things often made her own tongue burn and itch if she ever managed to touch them with it or simply failed to wash her hands properly after handling them.

With the second edition to the cereal answers all Imogen could do was chuckle yet again. ”I’m afraid the cereal would taste a bit brassy if you ate out of them,” she admitted with a small grin. Though they were entertaining she did have to move on and hear what the rest of the students had to say.

Making a face she decided that she really hated those smells! Whatever the professor was trying to do with the oil, Leesha hated it! Worried she wondered if he clothes were going to smell like the oil after the lesson because she was sitting all this time close to the oil and she hoped that it wouldn't happen. The smell was already bad enough in the classroom but she didn't wanted to take it with her while leaving the lesson!

Looking at the bowls before her she sighed, so this lesson w as again going to look a lot like Divination? Not good! Folding her arms she stared hard at the bowls and she worried if they were filled with more smelling stuff like the oil. "Frankincense?" She asked slightly worried, still thinking about the oil she was smelling.

But he didn't really know what purpose the bowls served. It wasn't just to smell nice and look pretty? Zoryn suggested cereal bowls, an answer Carlton appreciated. Fancy cereal bowls. Then he got an idea and his hand shot up in the air.

He waved his arm in the air before saying, "I don't know what the bowls are for, Professor." Obviously. "BUT, it smells nice. And people are happy when things smell nice." Why else did perfume exist? "So... It's to make us happy?" He shone up, hopeful. Because Carlton was happy. "And our robes will smell so nice after class." He waved his robe a little in the air. He'd strut this smell around all over Hogwarts. Yes, he would.

For a moment all Imogen did was just looking over to the young Slytherin girl before pausing…she was probably nervous as to the scents in the room? Right? That was all that Imogen could think as she simply shook her head. ”No, there is no Frankinsense in here, only Lavender and Jasmine” she paused, ”I do am planning on giving information on different aromas as they are a very personal thing to the user, one person will like the scent of thieves, and the other will find the blend to be a little bit…too pungent” she shrugged her shoulder and gave the girl a soft smile. ”If you want you can open the windows and let some fresh air from outside into the room, it might even wake us all up a bit…Lavender does have quite a calming effect on the brain and body” she meant every word of it. If anyone at all wanted to open the windows they could.

Little Carlton got a grin when he shot his arm into the air with such gusto. He obviously was a polite little one with his arm raising and the generally bubbly way he answered the questions…or tried to was really adorable to Imogen. It reminded her a lot of how her nephew Colin had been before he had gotten all…uptight and boring. ”Thank you for your insight Carlton, these themselves have nothing to do with the scent but they are often used a long side many different essential oils and scents” she gave him a small smile and really wanted to commend him for his eagerness in her class.

SPOILER!!: closest & the ones that got it!

Okay, so maybe she was slightly disappointed that they wouldn't be learning how to cast super-charged ultimately powerful spells- but looking at personal numbers had to be important as well, right? And they wouldn't just be studying Cultural Arithmancy forever. If nothing else, her answer had been mostly right, at least.

Professor Grevyson still had to be at least the second-best teacher ever.

The bowls, she had noticed before, and kind of thought they just went with the whole incense-y atmosphere... but they actually looked kind of similar to something she'd seen before. She tapped one thoughtfully with her fingernail before raising her hand, suggesting,
"Are they for music...? They look like the ones my Muggle music teacher had. In primary school." Then again, everyone else seemed to have pretty different ideas- so she could be way off on this one. But she thought that was like a meditation thing, so it could fit in with the whole theme of this lesson.

SCORE! Another chocolate frog card for him! Best of all being that the professor didn't seem to mind them eating in class...or napping either given she hadn't scolded Brian. Maybe Arithmancy wouldn't be so bad after all? If one could pass in their sleep, you know.

Tearing into his chocolate frog - and letting the actual frog hop out of his reach because his real sights were set on the CARD within - Derf couldn't help but grin at the professor with what she said. "You hear that?" he beamed at Zoryn. "Wise. She called my words wise."

And yes, he DID want to pet Yeti...and feed him (so treats were grabbed)...and take him for walks and teach him tricks and...

...well...it was safe to say that all attention giving to the actual lesson had flown right out the window.

The first year heard not the first question, his attention entirely on feeding the puppy treats and scratching it behind the ears in hopes of making one of its back legs do that THING that happy dogs did. Meanwhile...the chocolate frog that he had haphazardly let loose was hopping around somewhere while the chocolate frog card had been discarded on the floor next to his bag.

Merlin. Again. He had about 15 of him already. Alas.

But it was just as well that he had not heard the question as he really did not have much of an opinion on the subject. He had scanned over the chapter headings prior to class...and mostly just gotten nervous thinking about some of the topics. Particularly those relating to color.

Fancy cereal bowl? But where was the spoon?! He was also unconvinced about the guess for mortar and pestle as well...the texture was all wrong on the bowl for it to be efficient in any way...not to mention the curvature of the bowl being such that grinding anything with the wooden...thingy there would be difficult.

"Looks like a bell," he observed, only paying attention this time around because Zoryn had spoken. Although he WAS still feeding treats to Yeti and offering more scratches behind the ears. "A bowl-bell."

Also.... "I'm terrible in this subject but I'm putting my faith in you. To help me really understand, you know?" It didn't cost her anything to admit her own shortcomings. It wasn't like the Gryffindor was ashamed or anything. There was little shame to be found, as an aside.

Like who would want a mortar and pestle that fancy? Right? "But really they are meditation bowls." She nodded, "They are used to make sounds to calm you for meditation." So they were really doing the meditation things today. Yes.

Imogen gave Sinead, Derf, Liv and Kat small smiles and even muttered a small thank you to Liv as she had given the correct answer. It was blissfully nice to have someone be aware of what she was demonstrating with today, that and their answered had all been so close and quite accurate in most regards. ”Miss Dance, I do have to say that is a wonderful point to make, these do have some connection to music as I will demonstrate in a moment.” she smiled,

"I think I'd like to read about yogic arithmancy. I think..maybe it's about yoga and arthimancy? Yoga is supposed to enlighten your mind and all, sounds like something similar to this...and is that incense in the bowls? Maybe?" he answered in response to her last question.

And then there were those bowl things. Kat did say mortar and pestle and he chuckled loudly at that. Yep thats the first thing he thought too. But as he reached out for one of the bowls closest to him, he turned it over then tapped the wooden stick against the bottom of the bowl-- and it made a soft gong-ing sound.

*gooooooooooooong*

"Time for tea!" he beamed.

Yeah thats what he thinks its for.

Imogen just nodded and listened to Kane’s answer and to think it was a smart answer…except there wasn’t any oil in the bells. The incense and scents were simply coming from the essential oil infused candles and the small incense burners at the corners of the room. She hadn’t wanted to over stimulate anyone with too many essential oils that is.

Her moment was broken by the long GONG sound. Merlin. ”No…no you don’t need to bang it like a gong, you simply roll the lined mallet on the edge and as Miss Phillips mentioned the metal will sing. Her ears were still ringing. Merlin. Was her brain vibrating in her head?

Imogen stretched slightly and rolled her neck from left to right before she moved on to the lessons major parts. It was simple really; she just wanted everyone to feel comfortable for the lesson…and well, which made this easier than anything else really. ”Now, Olivia Phillips, I want to say thank you for bringing up the Tibetan Singing Bowls,” the facts were accurate of course. ”These are as Miss Phillips and Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne mentioned and guessed at, Bells.” taking a moment to look around at everyone she just grinned.

”Tibetan Singing bowls are used a lot of the time with meditation and even in some cases with yoga as well,” turning and tapping the board with her wand the image that had been becoming slowly more clear as the students answered the questions continued to form until it was finally clear and legible.

It wasn’t the only image on the board. There were others depicting the Chakras on the board. Each of the images clearly depicted the chakras and some even had details such as what the chakras were tied to in the outer life.

”It may be odd, or confusing to some to think about the chakras in regard to Arithmancy and numerology, however an imbalance in chakras" she paused for a moment and looked around at the students, "as well as an imbalance in your life, be it more stress, or other such outside influences has a great effect on your life. This can even effect how we read and interpret our numbers in Arithmancy."

Looking around at everyone she began to speak again "if you look at the images on the board you will not only see the names of the Chakras but also their spiritual location in the body, what effects they have on our lives when they are in balance, as well as a special point here below the base chakra." She looked around at everyone. "This spot below the base chakra that looks like a spiral is where the Kundalini energy is believed to be stored, it is also called Kundalini Shakti." She took a deep breath before continuing speaking...gosh she normally didn't speak this much, "Kundalini Shakti is believed to be the divine spiritual energy within every human being, which if you put that to Kundalini Yoga, it brings its importance forward defining it as a type of yoga with the sole purpose of awakening your spiritual energy. Muggles even practice this form of Yoga, however they often do not have spiritual energy or magic as we all have here in this room. " This wasn't all that the class was covering of course. She was just, this was what she loved doing. She loved this. Teaching people about the magic and connection in the more eclectic branch of magic.

There was a sort of calming peace to it. Similar, for her, to the calming and centering feeling of being by the ocean and hearing the waves crash on the beach. That was something that always made her tranquil, like the waves on a windless day.

"For today's lesson, I want you to all sit for a moment on your meditation pillows and use the boards I brought for you to take some notes. We'll get to the relaxing bit in a moment after we go over the main aspects of Chakras" she smiled over to them.

"There are eights Chakras, they are often divided up into two triangles, the lower and upper triangle. They are often divided into these triangles as a way to keep them in balance more easily." Taking a sip of her tea she placed the cup down below her and with a swirl of her wand she conjured what looked like a translucent statue of the chakra painting on the board. The image was silvery and shimmering as it hovered in front of the students, clearly it was just an aid to high light the chakras. "The lower triangle is made up of the Base Chakra, or the Muladhara Chakra which is believed to be located around the tailbone, the second charka, also known as the Svadhisthana chakra which is located here" another swish of her wand and the chakra glowed orange on the hovering statue. "the lower triangle also has the manipura chakra in it which is located around the waist or naval" she gave everyone a small nod. "the upper triangle is made up of the Anahata chakra, which is located around the chest and breastbone, the vishuddha chakra which is located at the throat, and the anja chakra which is located at the top of the head or approximately where one would say the third eye would be located." she took another sip of her tea to warm her now positively dry throat.

"both of the triangles and the chakras within deal with specific needs, desires, and wants you may have. The lower triangle chakras deal with physical needs of the body where at the upper triangle is more spiritual." She took a deep breath.

"The first - or Muladhara chakra is associated with security and survival. This chakra is always depicted in a red tone and it is associated with earth." Taking another sip of her tea and clearing her throat slightly she continued on. "The second Chakra or Svadhisthana Chakra is associated with creativity. It is orange in color and its element is water. The third Chakra, is about action and balance which is why it is located at the navel point. It is the color yellow and the element is fire."

Clearing her throat again she paused, "the most important thing to know about chakras as a whole, is that if one of your chakras is blocked or imbalanced in any way the chakras located above it will remain closed. This can become detrimental to your mental and physical health as it can be caused by outlying factors or reservations that you have in your life...now, continuing on. The Heart Chakra or Anahata Chakra is both in the lower and upper triangles and is the balance point of both chakras. This charka is associated with compassion and love, its element is air and the color green." Yeah...when she first learned Chakras she didn't know why it had to be green...wouldn't green water be...well, gross?

"Now, the upper triangle, the fifth chakra or the vishuddha Chakra is about projective power of the word, its color is light blue and it is associated with the element of ether." pausing to take a sip of her tea again she couldn't help but think about how much she would have to pee after this class....also did Yeti pee before class? She wasn't sure. "Now, the sixth, seventh and eighth Chakras in the upper triangle correspond to the non-physical and more subtle realms that chakras can be associated with." did that make sense? Was she making sense she didn't even know at this point. All of the planning and her worrying was starting to catch up with her. "so, the sixth, or Ajna Chakra which is located at around the location of the eyebrows is about intuition and wisdom the color is indigo." Indigo such a beautiful color. "the seventh or Sahasrara Chakra is located at the crown of the head. This charka is known to resemble humility and vastness, the color associated with this Chakra is Violet." So many words...more tea. She took another sip and cleared her throat. "Now the eigth Chakra is harder to notice as it is white. This Chakra is the aura, it is the electromagnetic field surrounding your physical body."

So. Many. Words.

So many.

Too many.

"the chakras are known to flow through channels in the body and channels that pass through the chakra points called Nadis." She took another centering breath and looked around at everyone, "now, how would you think one would meditate in order to balance the chakras?" she asked kindly and looked around at everyone.

ooc: if i missed anyone i'm sorry, i've been working on this post for three hours ALSO, please RP Yeti if you want...brain currently sputtering after 5k+ words on Chakras.

also just click to enlarge the images they have ALL/most of the information on them save for the aura-charka.

1. The chocolate frog had escaped and Zoryn did try to save it.... But it hopped right through her arms so uh, byefelicia?

2. Brassy cereal didn't actually sound that bad. The Gryffindor would have to try it.

3. SO MANY WORDS.

Dude.

Zoryn was lost. Officially. She turned to give Derf an incredibly CONFUSED face, deciding to give her attention to Yeti as she pet him loads. Honestly she heard maybe three things that the Professor said and none of them made any sense.

As for the question, she just gave her Professor an incredulous STARE. Whuuuuuuuuuuut?

BLINK. BLINK. BLINK. BLINK.

Was it too late to walk out of the room again?

Oops ok, so bowls apparently more like glass harp playing than percussion instrument. Professor is lucky that he didnt start playing the opening beat to Iron Man.

And then theres the lecture, and holy cannoli what a lecture. The Curly Top was just turning his head this way and that reading the images on the board. Did he understand any of it? Sort of, but then it was colorful and really thats the main thing that drew his attention. That and recollections of what his grandma does, which right now is a really weird combo happening in his head.

He's dizzy now. But there was a question somewhere in there. So dumbly he just pointed at those images on the board that had the figure sitting in a lotus position. "Like that?"

He hopes its that, because if not he will answer like this-- -- which is a pretty accurate example of what he's feeling right now.

Harriet still thought that the bowls would have made better cereal bowls, but the third year kept that to herself and instead just wrote some notes. It would be important so that when she saw the bowls again, she wouldn't just think that they were cereal bowls. She did need to learn something now and again after all. But she tilted her head as she listened to all this information. That was a lot of words. This wasn't her best subject, but she was going to try her best. But that was a lot of words, and maybe they were a bit too much. She made a mental note to read up on the subject, just in case it came up on an exam or something.

But now to think about the question. Chakras. They sounded quite interesting, even if Hattie hadn't heard of them before. And she was sure she could make a logical answer to the question. She thought for a while before putting her hand into the air. "Maybe your body needs to be balanced? so like not leaning too far forward, or backwards, or to the side. Like it could affect how we read the affects of the chakras if we aren't sitting centrally?" It kind of made sense since on the image the pictures were all in the centre of the body. Or at least it made sense to Hattie that way.

BELLS! So he had been right. Sort of. He DID glance over to this Olivia Phillips person and grinned at her because SHE had actually known what they were and he was pretty impressed by that. More blonde Gryffindors girls though. It seemed to be a THING with that house...and he was just curious enough to take a census on the subject. Just how many girls in Gryffindor were blonde? He could only think of TWO off the top of his head that he had met that were not blonde - Zoryn and pretty phoenix hair girl - and the rest - number of people pending in his memory - were blonde.

It was this thought that had him distracted for the first part of the professor's lecture, although the colorful posters did catch his attention briefly, but soon he was distracted again because Yeti was licking his hand. So OBVIOUSLY that was where the blonde's focus went and the rest of the lecture in one ear and out the other. He didn't even really catch the look Zoryn was giving him - aka he did not notice it at ALL - and was far too pleasantly preoccupied with scratching the puppy's full tummy. Maybe they had fed him too many treats...

He DID eventually look up, blue eyes catching some inconsistencies with the posters and their wording...but mostly his attention was immaturely drawn to the red one...and up went is hand.

"Professor...when it says base...does that mean bum or..." Because it was hard to tell from the picture. "Is it bum? Because that makes more sense when linked with the sense of smell." For gaseous reasons. And if it WAS bum...then Uranus seemed like the planet better suited for association, not Saturn.

He was trying not to boyishly giggle. Trying. Sort of.

Sinead's lips curled up into a little smile as Professor Grevyson praised her remark. She was all over this Arithmancy stuff. Music... she could totally work that one out as well. She'd taken piano lessons for a few years before coming to Hogwarts, at her mother's insistence. Although she'd never been a huge fan because it just felt so... mundane and muggle-y.

Any delusions that she was ahead of the curve in Arithmancy, though, vanished as soon as Professor Grevyson began addressing the class at large. Sinead's eyes practically popped out of her head at the onslaught of information and she nearly snapped her quill in her haste to copy everything down. Pity they couldn't have desks in the one class where she actually needed to do a lot of writing...

Um. How do they meditate? How was she supposed to know? Whether or not she did, though, she was going to offer an answer, because most of her other classmates didn't seem to be saying anything sensible.
"You use the bowls, to make music," she suggested. "And then concentrate just on what you're doing." Okay, maybe it was a bit vague, but the best she could do- and concentrating hard enough was the answer to pretty much everything, she thought, whether you were trying to get a spell down correctly or just read or whatever.

Once all of the answers were given, the professor began to get to the meat of the lesson. The seventh year picked up her clipboard and quill. As the professor started speaking, Janelle began to write and write and write. She was trying hard to keep up with all of the information that was being presented. It-was-a-lot. Janelle was definitely going to have to study her notes once she got back to the dorm.

Janelle was trying to process everything as she wrote. Chakras, eight, triangles, balance........ At some point she was writing the words, but her brain was on information overload. As her hands began to cramp, they arrived at a question. Down went the quill and Janelle began to stretch her fingers. She listened to the question and tried to come up with a coherent answer. Finally, Janelle raised her hand and took a wild guess. "Would there be any chanting involved? Maybe there could be certain words that you could repeat for each chakra." On second thought, seeing as how this was Arithmancy class, she changed her mind. "Or.......maybe you would focus on a certain number as you meditate." Or maybe that was not even close to the right answer, but she gave it a shot.

Music? The bowls were for music? Carlton stretched a little so that he could see them more clearly. Those were the strangest instruments he'd ever seen. They looked much more like cereal bowls than anything that could produce music, but then again. This was Hogwarts. So Carlton had been completely wrong with the bowls. But he had gotten a smile from Professor Greyvson so he considered it a bit of a victory after all.

When the professor moved on to what seemed to be the main part of the lesson, she completely lost Carlton. He tried to scribble down notes at first but quickly realized he didn't know how to take notes of something he couldn't spell, pronounce or understand.

He barely understood the question. They were balancing stuff now? Carlton could balance his pen on his finger if he concentrated hard enough. He demonstrated that little project for a few minutes.

He wondered if he was supposed to announce that he DID NOT UNDERSTAND A WORD, or if he should just sit silent. He chose to go with the second option and looked down at his notes.

SPOILER!!: Notes

Arithmancy
Cereal Bowls
Incense bowl
MUSIC-BOWL-INSTRUMENT

Schkra Csh CHAKRA

Balance stuff ??????????????????????

Carlton glanced around him at the other students, hoping Professor Greyvson wouldn't read his notes. And that he wasn't the only one lost.

SCREAMS! She was literally screaming inside of her head from frustration. Chakra’s? NO. WAY! This lesson was really the same as Divination and she HATED both! Looking frustrated she folded her arms and she wondered WHY she even had HOPED for this lesson to be a normal one… Well, nobody could say that she didn’t had tried to go here without even trying… Sighing out loud she just closed her eyes and listened to what the professor was saying but… It became really hard to take this lesson serious because… Chakra’s? Reaaaaly?

SUMMER FOREVER

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT.

Etta sat back, trying so hard to understand what the professor was saying but it was all just going way over her heard. She wasn't stupid so why could she not get any of it?! AH. Gosh. She looked down at her notebook, staring at the few words she had managed to write down.

She turned to look at her fellow classmates and realised that she wasn't the only one looking/feeling blank. Okay, good. That was a relief. She slowly raised a hand, trying to guess an answer anyway. "Uh.. to meditate with calmness and concentration?" Yes? No? Heh.

For just a moment, Olivia felt her cheeks flush with the joy of having been able to properly contribute in a lesson again. It wasn't so much about gaining prestige among her peers...as it was in elevating her own personal confidence. So, being personally thanked by Professor Greyvson for recognizing the bowls for what they were...felt really nice. "My mother uses them to soothe her mind.... I think. She's never been quite clear on that." Liv supposed they were calming...

...

........... And her mind was drifting. While Olivia could appreciate all this information, long-winded explanations usually killed her focus. It was just a lot at once, you know? The Gryffindor really could have benefited from all this coming in intervals.... but that was just her. Perhaps not everyone shared her concentration issues. She obviously couldn't pretend to know everyone's life. The only noticeable sign of her displaced attention was the glazed over look in her eyes... Otherwise, she had her eyes forward (but staring off into space).

It wasn't a smart idea to let her mind wander too much... but...

Hmm?

What?

Blinking herself back into the present moment... the blonde tilted her head up at their professor; following in the woman's example with the relaxed body poses. How did this help with anything? She could only guess, as this wasn't really her area of expertise. Her mother's, yes, but not hers own. "Because it puts not only your mind into a relaxed state, but also your body. I guess being completely at ease helps with the flow of energy in one's person." Which included one's senses, right? Couldn't you hear better when your mind wasn't overrun by errant thoughts or tensed up from conflict? Wasn't touch more... profound when the body and mind were as one?

Olivia's gaze unwillingly sought out Rooney... Was he sleeping?

Noelle sat cross legged on the pillow and pulled out the parchment paper. She started jotting down notes after notes. Holy Merlin that was a lot of notes and her quill was going a mile a minute. She needed one of those quills that just jotted down everything for you. She didn't know why she hadn't invested in one already.

She'd have to read over these notes later. Maybe Noah would be able to help her because right now, her head was spinning with all the amount of information that was given.

"Well you said there were numbers to the steps. Do you just follow the numbers down?" Clearly, Noelle didn't have any idea if that was correct or not.

Wait.

What?

Daisy sat there dumbfounded by all those woooords. Sooo maaanyyy woooords. She had never been good at Arithmancy and she had once wished it had fewer words but - it had too many words now!! Professor Greyvson was talking an awful lot about balance and Chakras and what not but there was no balance at all in this subject.

It was either too many numbers or too many words.

She looked over at Kat and shook her head in confusion. Did the Hufflepuff understand what was going on? Did anyone understand? Clearly some students did because there were answers going Professor Greyvson's way but Daisy was lost. Well and truly lost. If it wasn't for the fact that she apparently could play with Yeti later she would have walked out.

Yup. She was definitely not passing her Arithmancy OWL.

Kane tried to pay attention to the stuff the professor was talking about, he REALLY did...but he just couldn't keep up! This was why he hated this class. There was just SO MUCH to pay attention to! Chakras? The more Greysvon said that word, the less sense it made to him. He didn't even bother to take notes because it just went wayyyy over his head.

He raised his hand to try and at least take a STAB at the question. "Um, well if you have too much in one...chakra, you could...mediate and try and get rid of some of that energy through the...nadis?" he said, not entirely sure of anything he was really saying.

This was so ridiculous! This wasn't even arithmancy. Where were the figures, why were they not adding numbers yet? This professor was a fraud. It was obvious she couldn't do math or she would have started it by now. Natalia was fuming sitting on the stupid floor with the cushion. She wanted a desk, she wanted parchment, and she wanted to add numbers together. This was her subject. This was what she was good at, but this one, this crazy person was making them talk about a supposable form of Arthimancy that dealt with something that really could not be good for the younger students.

What was she even on about, did she really want them to do yoga? "Professor, how is this Arithmancy. Arithmancy is called Arithmancy because it's close to Arithmetic, isn't it? So does this just start with this terminology but there will be numbers to add or subtract to get the true answers like most of Arithmancy?" She really was starting to think about faking sick to leave. Though telling the woman she was off her rocker and leaving would feel nice, but she knew as Head Girl she had to be more mature than that, so stomach issues were probably the way to go. She could go to the library and study true Arithmancy there.

Kane was literally dying here. He had no idea what the professor was talking about, and he was pretty sure he hadn't followed any of it. He was going to fail Arithmancy, and what made it worse was that his younger brother seemed to have a response. Duuuuuuuuude.

Brent scratched his head in confusion while looking at the pictures on the board. Uhhh... "What about just clearing your mind and being at peace with whatever's going on?" he suggested, raising his hand. That's about all he could come up with. He had no idea what this nadis stuff was Kane was on about.

Was some dude napping across the room? ...

Summoning the papers from her desk Imogen quickly flicked her wand. What happened next was simple, the papers simply folded themselves into little paper cranes and simply flew over to the students one by one before unfolding neatly on their laps. The notes would definitely be helpful for them now? Wouldn’t it? She had thought so while planning the lesson.

Sort of, but then it was colorful and really thats the main thing that drew his attention. That and recollections of what his grandma does, which right now is a really weird combo happening in his head.

He's dizzy now. But there was a question somewhere in there. So dumbly he just pointed at those images on the board that had the figure sitting in a lotus position. "Like that?"

He hopes its that, because if not he will answer like this-- -- which is a pretty accurate example of what he's feeling right now.

Trying. Sort of.
Imogen looked at the students and could barely hold back her laugh. Dear merlin, those faces were so perplexed and confused. That reminded her of how she had been when teaching Annabelle to walk and how not peeing in house plants was a good thing…still, Annabelle had been a toddler at the time. It wasn’t like she was a first year with dire bladder issues.

Her eyes did widen as she watched the Gryffindor male Prefect nearly fall over. "do you need anything?...you look a little woozy?" she asked the concern seemed to radiate off of her in the way it only seemed to do with mothers....the Question young Derf had made Imogen grin. "I think you have a good point there Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne...but, alas its more associated with the tailbone so right above the bum," she grinned. "Too bad eh? would have been poetic."

SPOILER!!: squee I love you guys seriously

Hattie Patton got a small smile when she gave her answer. "The idea of a balanced body is more akin to what we will be learning with Ayurveda, as it not only deals with mental health but has been used for generations as a meditation and medical practice." It was after all far older than modern western medicine. "I do believe that reading chakras can be effected with how centered you are, not only physically because if you aren't physically centered it can be from an outlying problem such as having weak core body muscles or general aches and paines" she gave a small smile to Miss Patton before glancing around at everyone.

If Imogen had known of Leesha's dislike of divinations...which with her kinship to Laurel Vance she probably should have been aware of it...still, she would have warned her that Arithmancy is a subset of Divinations. A form using only numbers....after all it is a mancy.

She turned to look at her fellow classmates and realised that she wasn't the only one looking/feeling blank. Okay, good. That was a relief. She slowly raised a hand, trying to guess an answer anyway. "Uh.. to meditate with calmness and concentration?" Yes? No? Heh.
Looking over to everyone she gave them small smiles. "I'm sorry I failed to mention that I had notes coming to you earlier," she smiled softly before listening to the answers the students were trying to give. "calmness and concentration are a good point, as yes it does have strong effects on these aspects of life." She gave Etta a small nod for her answer.

She's never been quite clear on that." Liv supposed they were calming...

Imogen listened to what Olivia Phillips was saying about her mother’s connection to Meditation and the singing bowls. That must be nice for her mum to have some way to calm her mind in a tranquil and relatively easy way. ”I understand, honestly in my studies I have found it is a very personal experience, and I have to commend you on answer dear.” she smiled again.

Someone had obviously read ahead…or well, already knew what they were talking about maybe? That was probably it. Something like that at least. For the moment when Imogen followed Olivia's gaze she had to stifle a laugh.

She'd have to read over these notes later. Maybe Noah would be able to help her because right now, her head was spinning with all the amount of information that was given.

"Well you said there were numbers to the steps. Do you just follow the numbers down?" Clearly, Noelle didn't have any idea if that was correct or not.
The gryffindor Prefect got a large grin when she brought up numbers. Yes, that was clearly one of the methods to meditate. "that is a common meditation technique the idea is to imagine a staircase and count down until you have essential quelled your mind into a sense of complete and serene calmness. It is quite relaxing...impossible on planes though - for me that is." She added the last bit with a little grin. Yeah, that was an interesting plane ride...meditating on an international flight was about as useful as a Swiss army knife that only had multiple spoons for its utensil. Quite impractical indeed.

Daisy's confused look got her a small smile. Imogen did of course feel sorry about the utterly dreadfully long discussion on chakras that just happened...still, it was an integral part of Kundalini and Tantric numerology which was well, what they were learning about today.

He raised his hand to try and at least take a STAB at the question. "Um, well if you have too much in one...chakra, you could...mediate and try and get rid of some of that energy through the...nadis?" he said, not entirely sure of anything he was really saying.
Wait...had he said Nadis? HE DID! Imogen grinned over to the second year. "Nice work Mr. Westwood, yes that is a way, it is also about unblocking and finding why they are blocked and using your mindful and intent filled energy to unblock it so you can have steady and balanced chakras." she smiled over to him. Good job kid. Good job.

Imogen nodded over to Kane Westwood as he gave his attempted answer. It was good, really, he was trying and that was all that she ever asked people to do. To try. "Yes that is a key part of meditation and really mental health in general." she gave him a small smile.

Imogen watched as Sinead’s quill broke. Oh, she hated when that happened to her. ”I’m sorry Miss Dance, here, take one of my quills…or the handouts I gave with detailed notes” she smiled over to her softly. It was the least that she could do.

Was he SLEEPING? Imogen’s eyebrow raised at the previously ’meditating’ Ravenclaw Prefect. She didn’t want to make a scene…no, that wasn’t like her at all. No, instead she simply gave a little light whistle noise to little Yeti.

THE NOISE…furry ears twitched at the whistle…humans? Feeding…he could smell treats. TREAAATS…TREAT ME HUMANS. The little lab had perked up at the sound his human had given him whenever she wanted him to get up and do things….

What things?

The squishy thing was comfy.

The squishy thing that sleeping human beanbag chair was sleeping on looked comfier. Sleeping human looked comfy. Sleepy…he was sleepy. must. Sniff…don’t lick. Just sniff. No lick…no lick his mind was a whirl of whimpering grunts and undecipherable noises…well, to the human mind that is. The small fuzzball stretched out shook his head lightly before slinking over to the human beanbag chair next to him and promptly sat down on beanbag’s chest. Beanbag had foodybreath…food breath.

Snifff.

Sniff.

SNIFFFFFFFFFFFF….he liked breath. The paper like somewhat wet tongue had already darted out of his mouth to lick the air before he pressed his snout against the salty beanbag chair’s chin…no food there. Where was food? In the mouth? Yes. Mouth. Immediately Yeti’s wet nose was on the human salt lick’s face…he was salty. Salt.

With a little yip he tried to tell the beanbag chair to feed him…and to give him his salt. Where did he keep his salt? Why was it on his face?

Imogen Greyvson simply raised an eyebrow at the head girl as she seemed to be rather agitated indeed. ”Yes this is a part of Arithmancy Miss Franks-Mundie.” Imogen spoke in a calm and merely matter of fact tone. ”This is actually more connected to the practice of Kundalini and Yogic Numerology or as we are learning Tantric Numerology…this, is just the basis of it. Is there anything else you want to know miss?” She asked with a kind tone but her eyes were far less friendly now.

Now that the lecture portion of the class was over Imogen was ready...or welllll more ready to introduce the new subject matter to the students. ”Now that we have covered the basics of Chakras we can move on to today’s main subject, that is Tantric and Yogic numerology.” She looked around at everyone before tapping the board again. The information on the chakras faded away to simply be replaced by a list of the spiritual bodies associated with Tantric numerology.

”now the bodies here are used in Tantric Numerology…which first off everyone that believes they know what tantra is. Stop. It isn’t what you think it is at all.” her voice was calm and almost peaceful as she spoke. Using her wand she tapped the board and the definition appeared.

(word meaning in sanskrit) loom, weave.
”Tantra is a Sanskrit word meaning loom or weave.” she paused for a second, ”when we use this along with numerology which is the basis of Arithmancy we see it means the study of weaving numbers…or how numbers weave through our lives. Now, with Arithmancy it means a similar thing, divining how numbers weave through our lives.” She smiled softly. There. Wasn’t a nasty word…just something quite simple and rather beautiful really.

”if you don’t already know Sanskrit is one fo the first written languages, and it is the primary sacred language of Hinduism and Mahãyãna Buddhism, a philosophical language in Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism.” There. She had given them the true meaning of Tantra…”Tantra is also an esoteric tradition in both Hinduism and Buddhism. In Indian traditions it has a systematic meaning that is rather broadly acceptable, those are text, theory, method, system, instrument, practice and technique.” she gave them a small smile because clearly, this was new to them? It wasn’t like it was a scary thing that they had to fear.

”now when are calculating Tantric Numerology and Kundalini the only thing we will need is our birthdate, this makes it a bit easier then some of the more complex forms of Arithmancy we have learned in the past.” she gave them a small smile.

”The numbers we are calculating today are the soul number, the karma number, the gift number, the destiny number, and the path number. Please do not confuse these with the numbers you find in your normal Numerology textbooks, as they have slightly differing meanings and calculation methods when using the Kundalini and Tantric approach…however, these are still calculated similar to the Chaldean method with addition used to reduce numbers,” she nodded and wrote down the instructions on the board.

She was almost to the best part. ”I will be handing out a parchment with what the numbers relate to as well as what the meaning of the five numbers we are calculating today mean in Tantric Numerology.” she smiled over to everyone…well almost everyone.

SPOILER!!: the definitions & numbers

Soul Number;
Indicates your relationship with yourself. Represents the link you have to your undying and infinite soul. The soul is deep, inner peace which can only be attained when you go inside of yourself.

Karma Number;
Indicates your relationship with others. It describes what you need to do to achieve harmonious relationships.

The Gift Number;
This refers to given talents. You calculate this number in order to recognize and use your talents.

Destiny Number;
Tells you how others see you, represents the quality for which you have been working on for many years and lifetimes. This quality is in you, people can see this quality it is something you are a master in and you can use it to help yourself and others as well.

The Path number;
Indicates who you are, and what your purpose on earth is. It lets you know about that one trait that you need to manifest in your daily life. The one thing that will help you live a fluid life.

”now the bodies defined on the board are the definitions we are looking for in our readings. See, this is a simple part, and by calculating these numbers it can tell you what parts of your life you need to focus on to awake the spiritual energy within you…or at least, that is the premise of Kundalini.” Imogen smiled and looked around.

”Everyone please take the lap desks and your writing utensils and start calculating…I will calculate these along with you, as really, I do find this quite interesting myself.” she said while pulling one of pillowed desks onto her lap and writing down her information.

This was just stupid and she was having a hard time sitting there any longer. When the professor started talking about the Hindu part of it Nat wanted to speak up and say yeah, something that should not be taught in this classroom. She could care less if the woman was giving her a look. She really didn't think she trusted the lady. Right now she was questioning if she was a real Arithmancy Professor. What would the Headmistress think if she knew what the Professor was really teaching in this class today?

Her eyes moved to the board when there was actually some numbers they could add. Her fingers twitched wanting to do them, but her complete annoyance over this lesson was getting in the way. "Yes Professor, May I be excused to the loo?" She was over it, she'd study in the library.

Slate honestly dozed off. He wasn't sure what was happening. Something about having an aligned spinal column he was guessing.

But now math was happening. Math was something he knew how to do.

It wasn't really math that meant much to him, but it was math nonetheless. It was basically the only thing he knew how to do here. Okay. Could he stop pretending he was meditating now...?
