Default Transfiguration Lesson 2

It's a Monday morning, and the Transfiguration lesson will be starting promptly at 10 am. Classical music can be heard playing in the transfiguration classroom as usual. Today the chairs and desks are arranged in clusters of 4 seats. There are no seating assignments today, just instructions on the chalkboard to Sit in an area of the room where you wouldn't usually sit. Professor Riveroll is seated at her desk at the front of the room. On a table in the front of the room there is a plate of brownies for students to eat if they wish to take one.

"I don't know, maybe she wanted us outside of our comfort zones. That's a thing for most people, right?" Comfort zones? Char tended towards comfort zoning any zone she happened to be in, but some people (maybe most people?) weren't like that. Liv, Char felt, was more like her than like some or most people.

Yeah, Olivia recognized a plastered smile when she saw one. Her mother liked to implement them when dealing with people she didn't really care for.... but that was silly to consider in this situation. She and Char were good. Perhaps... it was something else?

"I'm doing much better today." That's all she'd say for now, for reasons. She was getting back to her personal status quo. Thankfully.

She paused. "Do you think we'll start soon?" The blonde Gryffindor was getting anxious to try out whatever transfiguration magic they'd be working on today. She'd already improved this year, and she definitely wanted to keep that momentum going. Even if it was marginal.

Right as the hands on the clock indicated that it was 10, Felicity got up from her desk and stood at the front of the room. ”Good morning. Today we will be starting class by reflecting on how you can improve your transfiguration skills and what areas of transfiguration you need the most work in. Please get out parchment and a quill and write down one area of transfiguration that you are strong in and one area of transfiguration that you think needs the most work on.”

After giving the students a couple minutes to write, Felicity was ready to move on to the next question. ”What are the branches of transfiguration, what are the characteristics of the types of spells in each branch, and what are some examples of spells in these branches?” Everyone should know the branches of transfiguration, so this was a fairly easy question.

Azura tilted her head a little as as the Professor got up to speak and she listened carefully as she instructed them to all name a branch of transfiguration that they were good at.. And a branch that they were bad at..

Azura hurriedly got her parchment and her quill out and started to write down her answers.

Branch of Transfiguration I am good at: Conjurations.
Branch that needs work: Vanishments.


Azura put her quill down and looked up at the Professor as she spoke and she raised her hand..

"The Branches of Transfiguration are : Conjurations, which as the name suggests consists of conjuring things out of thin air.. A spell such as Incarcerous is an example of conjuration. Vanishments, which consist of vanishing things into thin air.. Evanesce is an example of that. Transformations, which is transforming one thing into another.. Vera Verto is a good example of that branch and finally.." Azura paused for a moment.."Untransfigurarions. Which undoes the spell and brings an object back to its original form.. "

Wooo.. that was a lot of talking..

What areas did she need to improve upon? Um...... Paige felt the heat rising in her cheeks as she took her quill to her parchment and jotted down her response to THAT. What was she fair at? Vanishment. What did she need to improve upon? Everything else. Seriously...just as Hugo. Although if she had to pick the one that she was the WORST at...that would probably be Conjurations. Response on her parchment, Paige promptly flipped it over and listened to the first question...

...which was immediately answered by Azura and therefore Paige considered just remaining silent, but actually had some more to offer up. Theory, this she could discuss.

"There are also sub-branches," the Hufflepuff added upon raising her hand. "Such as Human Transfiguration which is a very advanced form of Transfiguration and quite difficult. This sub-branch also includes transformation magics like those involved with animagi, werewolves, and metamorphmagi."

There was another sub-branch, but Paige opted to leave that for anyone else who wished to jump on the bandwagon for that.

One area that she was good at and one that she wasn't (yet)? Hmm. Rula considered for a moment, trying to decide what hers were. It was hard to decide, since in certain areas, like Conjuration, there were a few spells that she was okay with, but she definitely hadn't mastered all or even most of the spells. But was that her worst? Hmm...

After a bit more thought, she scribbled down her answer.

And now onto questions! Fairly easy ones too, but that was okay with Rula. She listened to a couple other students list off some of the branches of Transfiguration, then she raised her hand. "There's also another sub-branch of transformation called Switching, which also has another group within it, called Cross-Species Switches." So many sub-branches!

Char was about to answer when the professor got up. Instead she made a funny face at Liv that was supposed to indicate they'd talk later, and turned her attention to the professor as she started the lesson.

need to work on: the boring and pointless stuff


Well. It was TRUE. If her imagination wasn't captured then she had trouble with finding her knack.

And now there were questions, which was fine but before she could even open her mouth Azura basically answered all the things, though Char noted the younger girl's mistake in pronouncing the vanishing spell. Paige and Rula elaborated on things and Char tried to decide if there was anything she could contribute. She didn't want to just repeat what had been said already after all, that would be silly. She considered mentioning thaumaturgy and thaum theory -she'd read something about this once when she'd been bored enough to read a copy of the journal Transfiguration Today, something the Kettleburns were subscribed to because Ravenclaw parents thought that stuff was fun- but decided against it. She couldn't elaborate on it much after all.

So.....


yeah, nope. She had nothing. Char settled for writing stuff down instead and hoped this wasn't going to lead to the professor making them apply a certain baffling formula to spells.

After having stuffed his face with brownies and taken another 5 pieces with him to his seat, Matt sat miraculously quiet as he munched on the chocolate squares.

The boy deflated a bit when he heard they were going to write stuff about what they knew and some other stuff he didn't pay attention to. Eh. He wasn't in the mood to write whatever it was the professor wanted them to write, so he carried on eating brownies. He did, however, pull out a quill and started doodling on his parchment.

She had smiled at Henry and looked over at Katy. " Yes, I think we do know each other. Hey Katy." Katy was an interesting one, but Nat enjoyed her around. She liked her spunk and her enthusiasm about things. Though she might not have seen eye to eye with the way she interfered with her brother's relationship, but that was over and one now.

Oh, class was getting started. Giving Henry a we can talk later smile, she turned her head to the professor as she started to speak. What was she strong in and what was she needing more work in. Was this a trick question for the less confident? She knew she had many strengths, but her biggest weakness was she didn't truly believe in those strengths when it came to using her wand. Professor Hirsch had been helping her all term and she was more confident, but knew she could always be doing better. So writing on her parchment she decided her strength was her will to want to do better and her push to succeed. Her weakness was her confidence still was set against her. She knew it wasn't exactly about transfiguration, but that's where her thoughts had gone at the moment.

Before she could even finish writing it seemed Azura had the entire question answered, well that was good, less talking Nat would have to do. She was always afraid of the professor just randomly calling on her and then her mind going blank so now she knew she could just sit there quietly and wait for the next question. Even with others answering sub parts of transfiguration Nat stayed quiet, because really they all seemed to be doing great and she could just pay attention or daydream, which ever came first.

Welp, since that first girl had gone and answered all the questions, Katy contented herself to propping her chin on her fist and making faces at Henry, who had been polite enough to say hello, and Nat, who had been polite enough to acknowledge her. She wasn't being distracting, though, just quietly distracted. It wasn't bad so long as the only person she kept off task was herself.

She could do the writing bit, at least. What were her strengths and weaknesses? Transfigurations didn't come as easily as Charms did, but she figured she was relatively new at it and should be allowed to be bad at it for now. So. Strengths: first and second year spells. And Weaknesses: everything else.

The thing about sitting at the very back is that it didn’t help with his focus. There was a lot to see from where he was sat, so it was a bit of a challenge to zero in on the professor who stood up and started the lesson. Her words made Jace pause because...so far, he hasn’t checked his strengths and weaknesses when it comes to magic. The problem with overachievers like Jace was the fact that they’d improve on anything and everything. It was hard to categorize which one is his strength and weakness.

Jace drew a blank here, and thank Merlin he was at the back. It helped cover his cluelessness. Other forms of Transfiguration though? The others pretty much said what he wanted to say, so instead, he took out his parchment and quill and started to write down notes.

Well now there was no reason for Katerina to raise her hand and answer. Now that Azura had already given the answer, and every thing that went along with it. Well the branches of transfiguration.

At least she could still give an example of a spell. She took some notes before getting back into the class discussion, and focusing on that. Or the lack of conversation taking place. She raised her hand and said. "Reparifarge is a counter spell that reverses the effects of an incomplete Transformation spell. That's an example of Untransfigurarion." Yep that was the only contribution she could make to this.

Offering a last smile at Char, because yay! the lesson was beginning....Olivia turned her undivided attention onto Professor Riveroll. She was so envious of the woman for being able to turn herself into an animal... Like, if that was not the absolute coolest thing to ever exist... It definitely made her want to learn how, but then again, her complete lack of skill in regards to this subject pretty much crippled that dream. How could she even level up to that point? NOT... that she was going to concede or give up, but man... her confidence constantly took a hit in this classroom.

Pulling out a piece of parchment, she quickly jolted a few things across the center of it.

"Professor, I know that Fiendfyre is a form of Conjuration, because.... it's literally conjuring cursed fire." So, obviously. "I know about it from History of Magic." A former Gryffindor had used it to destroy something. Or another.

Oh no, this was going to be a theory lesson, wasn't it? What Henry liked best about Transfiguration was casting interesting or useful spells, and the rest was pretty much lost on him. It wasn't that he didn't try, and he did what he could when it came to studying or homework, but the theory behind spells usually caused him to lose his focus in class. Hopefully they'd be doing some spellwork later.

He made a face back at Katy because eh, theory stuff, then he tried to sneak a peek at both hers and Nat's parchment to see what they wrote. Not that he was trying to copy, just more being curious or getting an idea what he should write. Hmm, they weren't much help and he decided to write his own thoughts anyway.

Conjuring things out of thin air was probably Henry's favorite kind of spell, in this subject at least, but he was limited in what he could do so far. He could do some of the easier spells, but the more advanced conjurations were just as cool if not cooler. Those were a must on his need to learn list. As for the question, Azura got a grateful nod at her answer. No need to add any more, though maybe he should have written that down?

As class began and Professor Riveroll placed that question before her and the rest of the students, Cassie bit the inside of her cheek. She had her highs and her lows in ways of skills just like everyone else, but trying to pin-point it, especially off the cuff, wasn’t the easiest task. She took out a sheet of parchment anyway, letting her quill hang above it absently as she tried to work out her best fit for either a strength or weakness.

As for the other questions raised, Azura seemed to have that fully covered. And anything that may have been missing, other classmates took care of, so the third year simply listened to what was being said. Hoping it gave her ideas on what to put on her lists as she started on her parchment.

Bradson Somerhalder waltz right into the classroom about five minutes before it was starting. He looked up at the professors desk. "Good morning Professor Riveroll." He greeted her with a warm smile. The Scottish teenager made his way over to the a table with his best friend, Kat. "Hey Kat!" He smiled brightly at her. Everyone knew that they were besties forever.

The badger looked up with his blue-green eyes as Professor Riveroll started speaking. That five minutes went by very quickly. Questions already. Brady stretched a little in his chair and listened to some people as he wrote some notes for class down. He had a feeling that he might forget what's being said. Just when Bradson was about to speak up he stopped himself. Most of what he wanted to say had already been mentioned.

Maybe he would get the next question.

Hopefully this was going to be an interesting lesson.

Juno had to think for a moment about what she was good at in Transfiguration, and what she needed work in. Once she had an idea of what she though she could use work in she jotted it down.

It looked like everyone had answered the question pretty thoroughly, so Juno just too notes on everyone's answers. She wondered what they would be working on today, and if they were doing any practical tasks today instead of just taking notes and having discussions all lesson.

She would find out soon enough.
