The desks and chairs are arranged in a semicircle facing Professor Riveroll's desk and the chalkboard for the transfiguration lesson today. On each desk is a card with a student’s name on it; these have been distributed randomly so that students are likely to be seated near someone who they would not usually sit by. Soft classical music can be heard playing throughout the classroom, as Professor Riveroll often plays this music before class starts. Professor Riveroll herself is nowhere to be seen, but students might notice the raccoon sitting on her desk in the front of the room. A message on the chalkboard reads Please find your seat and get out your textbook and materials for taking notes.

Animagi being the subject of this lesson made sense considering the professor had just demonstrated her ability at it. Rula thought it was a pretty interesting subject, and something she kind of wanted to learn...but also kind of not, because of the whole being-half-human-half-animal-forever-if-you-failed-at-it thing. That thought wasn't too appealing.
Instead of thinking about that right now though, she focused on listening and taking notes. Most of her classmates seemed to have it covered.

Until one answer caught her attention.
"Remus Lupin wasn't an animagus," she said, raising her hand. "I think you're thinking of James Potter. Lupin was a werewolf." Which wasn't exactly the same thing as an animagus. Though...that did make her think of something to add/ask.
"Professor," she continued, raising her hand again, "could someone who was a werewolf also be an animagus?"

Animagi were interesting, right? Merlin knew it was a LOT LOT LOT of work to master the spell, but being an animal was a perfect disguise. In spite of people knowing that it was technically possible that the dog they were conversing in front of was actually the wizard down the street, they forgot all the time and weren't cautious. The best investigators and reporters and corporate spies would work like mad to become an animagi... which made it an interesting skill to consider.
For now, though, Katy was interested just in the theoreticals. For example... "Professor, I heard that to master the Transfiguration spell to become an animagi, you have to hold a leaf under your tongue for a MONTH." Big eyes. No talking for a MONTH?

Kaycee honestly didn't see why animagus were such a big deal. Sure, it was cool to change into a raccoon. But... why would you? It didn't seem incredibly useful.
Unless the whole point is to have done something that requires a lot dedication for the sole purpose of impressing children.
As for the questions, all the Gryffindor Prefect could think of was how useless a trick it was, unless you were planning on spying on someone. Even then, most forms didn't seem particularly useful for that.

Calmly raising his hand, Jace waited for his turn to answer. “An Animagus is a witch or wizard who has learned the skill to transform into an animal form unique to them. They do not fully become the animal assigned to them however, but simply morph into it.” He was obviously not being clear with his words, but Jace continued on. “Animagus in their animal form adapt certain marks from their human form…such as a mole on the face…or a missing limb. That separates them from real animals.”
As Jace wrote the date on his parchment, the thirteen year old cannot help but think about his animal form.
And…why was the professor looking at Denaker? Can she transform already?
No, they wouldn’t actually be learning how to become animagi. That required special permission, dedication, great skill in transfiguration, and lengthy training. There was also a lot of risk involved in this type of transformation. Becoming an animagus was not for everyone. ”Very good. An animagus can change into an animal at will, while retaining human thoughts and behavior patterns. Usually animagi will have a distinguishing feature that mirrors a physical feature in their human form.”

Jasper cringed at the thought.
Maybe he'd just watch if they were going to try to do that today?
They surely wouldn't though would they???
At the question Jasper hesitantly raised a hand. "Um... an animagus is a wizard that can use transfiguration to turn into an animal..." at that moment he realised that he'd forgotten what distinguished the animagus from a regular animal though.
Flushing in slight embarrassment at having drawn attention to himself now he looked down, hoping someone else would take over and his lack of answer to the second question wouldn't matter too much.
Why was he in Ravenclaw again?
”Good. Animagi are witches and wizards who have the ability to transform into an animal at will.”

"It's a learnt skill, not hereditary, meaning just because your parents are one, you won't necessarily be one." Which was different to other things in the wizarding world. "And an animagus can transform into their chosen animal when they want, and sometimes without a wand, which non-animagus cannot"
Was this one the younger sister of head boy Franklin Paton? Her older brother was an animagus, so it was likely that she would know something about animagi. ”Yes, to become an animagus you must go through all the steps to becoming one yourself. Animagi do not choose their animal form and can only transform into one animal. Once the first transformation is done, animagi are able to transform at will without a wand.”

Having all her materials for the lesson laid out before Hadleigh watched the rest of her peers enter the room and find their seats. It was only a few minutes later that Professor Riveroll leaped off her desk changing into her human form. This got a small grin from Hady as she watched. It had been expected. What hadn't been expected was the days topic. Animagi. Well alright then. This was right up her lane. Something she knew backwards and forwards. Therefore she had a strong feeling that she was expected to answer the questions asked today.
Hazel eyes shifted once around the room. Where was Frankie? If he was here they could've each answered part of the question. Each of those that answered before her got a warm smile. Nicely done. Hady nodded towards Hattie knowing the younger girl would know quite a lot seeing as her brother was one. Raising her hand she gave her answer when it was her turn. "Everything Jace, Jasper and Hattie said is true. The process is typically very long and can take many years to achieve. If the transformation doesn't go correctly you can be stuck as both part human and part animal until the time of your passing, there is no magical way to correct it." There was much much more that the seventh year could have went on to say but didn't. There were others that still deserved a chance to answer.
Here was an expert in all things animagus related. One for the other students to look up to. Head girl Hadleigh Lynch was addressing the dangers of the transformation, something that those wishing to train as an animagus should take note of. ”It is true that if something goes wrong at any point in the training you may become incurably stuck in half-human half-animal form for the rest of your life.”

Another good point. ”Yes, all animagi are required to register with the ministry. The training process is complicated and can take a long time, and many don’t have the skill, time, and dedication required to become an animagus.”

Before they could really get into the discussion, the class started with the raccoon shifting into Professor Riveroll. Knew it! Not only was she right, she was actually going to be trained by someone who was an animagus. This was so exciting! And, and the lesson was on animagi!
Hadley grinned at Skylar and raised her hand. Jace had already covered most of it. The jerk. "Animagi can transform at will, without the need of wands or spells to do so, once the initial transformation takes place. It's an extremely difficult and time consuming process to become one. Unlike with human transfiguration into animals, the animagi retains full awareness and control even in their animal forms. And...it's a really cool trick to wow people at party...or in a classroom." She gave Professor Riverroll a wink. The last part, she was kidding though, mostly.
Felicity was paying attention to Hadley Denaker to see what she had to say about animagi. ”Very good.” Felicity raised an eyebrow at that last part. While that statement did have some truth to it, it should never be the primary reason that someone chose to become an animagus.

She began scribbling the answers other students were writing out of habit. Then she raised her hand. And..." She paused before saying the next thing because she wasn't 100 percent certain. "An Animagus can't transform into more than one thing. When your form is set you can't change it."
Felicity smiled at Kitty, the Ravenclaw prefect. ”Yes, animagi must register with the ministry and can transform without use of a wand after the first transformation. An animagus can only transform into one animal and does not get to choose this animal.”

Sure Sky knew of the transformation process, but seeing it take place before her very eyes was just awe-inspiring that it took the second year a good minute or two to recollect her thoughts. And yes, she knew Hady had trained to become one, because she recalled last year when the older girl couldn't talk during one of their lessons and well she had to give her instructions without any verbal feedback from the older snake.
"Aren't there maybe some sort of distinct feature that humans are present with, that might show up on your animal form? And like vice versa. For instance, if you wear glasses, having that reflective spectacle look around your eyes when in animal form might be common?" It seemed to make sense to her. But wait, what? Party trick? Sky raised an eyebrow skeptically at the Ravenclaw. Well then, she supposed that was true.... technically.
”Yes, animagi have distinctive features that are present in their human form.”

The fact that the Ravenclaw boy seated next to her seemed knowledgeable on the subject was promising. The second year nodded seriously while he gave his answer, agreeing with everything he said, obviously. Yes, exactly, she definitely knew all those things, too.
...Well most of them, anyway.
"Your animagus isn't necessarily an animal you'd pick for yourself, but one that represents aspects of who you are as a person." Yes, that. "Like, maybe I'd want to be a hummingbird, but am more likely to be a cat because of my personality.”
”Yes, animagi do not choose their animal form. The animal form is determined by inner personality traits and is often the same as the form of a witch or wizard’s patronus.”

This was an exciting topic to talk about. Juno wondered if she learned to become an Animagi what animal she would be.
Felicity nodded at what the Hufflepuff prefect had said. ”Yes, part of the training process involves holding a mandrake leaf in your mouth for an entire month.” They would be discussing this more later.

"Professor, transfiguration is a branch of magic I have so much trouble with. I suppose having said that, it's a safe bet becoming an animagus would be extremely difficult." She paused, shifting her gaze around the room. Why didn't more people look impressed?! "How many years did it take for you to learn to do that?”
”Transfiguration requires a great deal of concentration, visualization, and precise wand work. There are also many things that can go wrong if you mess up, and all of these factors make transfiguration a difficult subject to master. If you would like help with your transfiguration spells, I am available to work with you after classes.”A good question from Miss Phelps. ”The amount of time it takes for an individual to become an animagus can vary. The first part of training with the mandrake leaf in your mouth takes one month, but you may have to restart the training from the beginning is something goes wrong. The training can take months, or even years. My training took a little over a year.”

Animagi. It wasn’t something she’d been particularly interested in, but given her dormmate had gone through the training and she knew of at least one other who had, a bit had filtered over to her. People had quickly offered their answers, Hady of course being one, but there was a little more that she hadn’t heard mentioned so she had raised her hand. “While commonly a witch’s Animagus form is the same as their Patronus, an Animagus form doesn’t change like a Patronus can. And also, a lot of Animagi can’t actually conjure a corporeal Patronus anyhow.” It didn’t particularly answer the questions, but it was still something she thought important enough to mention.
”Yes, one’s patronus and animagus form are often, but not always, the same.”

”It is true that Remus Lupin was a werewolf and not an animagus. As for the questions, all the Gryffindor Prefect could think of was how useless a trick it was, unless you were planning on spying on someone. Even then, most forms didn't seem particularly useful for that.
Of course there were a few quiet students who did not wish to speak. That was alright as long as they were learning something from what their classmates had to say. Perhaps they would participate more another time. Were they all taking notes?

As some of you mentioned, the process of becoming an animagus involves holding a mandrake leaf in your mouth for an entire month, from full moon to full moon. This is the first step in the process of animagus training. If the leaf ever comes out of your mouth before the time comes to remove it or if there is not enough moon light on the night you remove it, you must start again. The mandrake leaf must be placed in a crystal phial with some of your own hair, dew, and the chrysalis of a death’s-head hawk moth. This must be placed in a dark place and left undisturbed until the next lightning storm. If it receives sunlight or is disturbed you will be at an increased risk of becoming stuck in a mutated half-human half-animal form. Every day and sunrise and sundown while waiting for the lighting storm to occur, you must place the tip of your wand over your heart and say the incantation "Amato Animo Animato Animagus.” When the lightning storm occurs, you must retrieve the crystal phial, which should now contain a red potion. Go to the space where your first transformation will occur, place your wand-tip against your heart, speak the incantation, and then drink the potion. At this time the first transformation should occur.” As Felicity spoke notes appeared on the chalkboard. Were they all taking notes?
”Obviously you will not all be training as animagi, as this is something that you should never for any reason attempt without guidance and you need special permission if you wish to train with me.” Couldn’t have them all going off attempting things that might leave them permanently mutated. ”Today we will be learning a spell that can change the appearance of your skin. The incantation is Mutare Pellem, and the wand movement is a swish over the area that you wish to change. Please take some time to practice this spell.”
SPOILER!!: Chalkboard
[list][*]Animagi can change into animals at will[*]Retain human mind[*]Do not choose animal form[*]Risk of permanent mutations if training goes wrong
STEPS
1- One month, from full moon to full moon, one must keep the leaf of a mandrake in the mouth constantly, no breaks or you need to start again.
2- Leaf is removed at the full moon and placed, steeped in saliva, in a small crystal phial, recieving the pure rays of the moon - if the night is cloudy you will have to find a new Mandrake leaf and start again. To the moon-struck crystal phial, add one of your own hairs, a silver teaspoon of dew collected from a place that neither sunlight nor human feet have touched for a fill seven days, and the chrysalis of a Death's-head Hawk Moth. Put this mixture in a quiet, dark place and DO NOT LOOK AT IT or otherwise disturb it until the next electrical storm.
3- While waiting for the storm, the following procedure should be followed at sunrise AND sundown. The tip of the wand should be taken over the heart and incantation "Amato Animo Animato Animagus"
4- The storm might take weeks, months or even years. The crystal phial should remain completely undisturbed, and completely untouched by sunlight. Contamination by sunlight may result in increased risk of the worst mutations. Do not look at the potion until LIGHTNING occurs. **If you continue to repeat your incantation at sunrise AND sunset, there will come a time when, with the touch of the wand-tip to the chest, a SECOND HEARTBEAT may be sensed, sometimes more powerful than the first, sometimes less so. Nothing should be changed. Continue to perform the incantation at the correct times, NEVER omit a single occasion.
5- Immediately upon the appearance of lightning in the sky, retrieve your potion. If correct, all procedure performed step by step correct, you will discover a mouthful of blood-red potion inside the crystal phial.
6- Move AT ONCE to a large, secure place where your transformation cannot cause alarm or place you in physical danger. Place your wand-tip against your heart, speak the incantation, and then drink the potion.
7- If correct, you will feel a fiery pain and intense double heartbeat. Your mind will create the shape of the creature into which you will transform into shortly. It is too late to escape the change you have willed
8- The first transformation is usually uncomfortable and frightening. All clothing, accessories (glasses, jewelry, clothing etc) meld into the skin and become one with fur, scales or spikes. DO NOT resist, DO NOT panic - or the animal might gain dominance and you could do something foolish (try to escape from a window, or charge a wall etc.)
9- When transformation is complete, you should find yourself physically comfortable. You are advised to pick up your wand, AT ONCE, and hide it somewhere safe where you can find it after you return to your human form.
10- TO return to a human, visualize your human self as clearly as you can. This should be sufficient, but do NOT panic if it does not occur immediately. Practice to fluidly transform yourself at will, by simply VISUALIZING the creature. Advanced Animagi can transform without wands.

If Charlotte was inclined to do the animagus thing (which she wasn't), armed with the instructions of how to go about it, she'd just.... go ahead and do it on her own, now that she knew what they were. However she was also kiiind of zoning out because that was a LOT of talking. A LOT of notes. A LOT of boring.
errmmmm....
But they were at least learning a spell! Charlotte.... put her hand up though.
"Change the skin how, professor?" Because she hadn't said that. Changing the skin could mean anything! And the incantation only gave away that the skin would change, and not how.

..... Wait. What?
Because this particular Gryffindor gal suffered from some pretty outlandish, fantastical attention issues, only about a third of what the professor had actually said sunk into her brain. It was a good job she'd had the chalkboard charmed to also reflect her words...... But also, Olivia only felt encouraged by her explanation. Not warned off or cautioned.
The thing about Gryffindors... Yea, it sounded like loads of work, which was only a little discouraging... BUT HOW COOL would the whole experience be? To be able to shift forms so completely and explore the world through brand new eyes?? Because Liv understood that animals viewed things differently than humans did. That was just common sense to her. Kinda like how bugs saw things through a multi-faceted lens.
.......... What would her animagus form be? How was that determined? JUST by personality? Or was there simply more to the entire thing? Like one's personal character, their SOUL... And don't even get her started on the patronus thing... Man, Olivia absolutely could NOT wait to learn about those from Professor Hirsch. Magical spirit guardians? SIGN HER UP!
.
.
... And she'd drifted off into her own world where everything was colorful and abstract.
Blonde head bowed, Liv shifted her attention off to Char, who was asking questions. She always asked questions. It was good, because said questions were usually things she herself wanted answers to. So, it saved her loads of trouble. What type of skin...
Wait.
F A S H I O N Q U E S T I O N
Could. She. Give. Herself. Snakeskin?!?!?!
Sitting up a bit straighter in her seat, Olivia leaned in... as if her shifting about would better allow her to hear the answer. She was preparing herself, basically. Yes, her body was ready. Carry on.
Also, textbook? WHY a textbook? NO, she was rejecting that! Liv needed clear visuals for her brain to actually register the information. This wasn't something she could teach herself. SHE WAS SUCK AT THIS MAGIC. The epitome of SUCK, actually. Not an exaggeration.
"I'll need to see you do the spell, Professor, because I'm pretty bad at this type of magic." It was honest, because she was an honest girl.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
One had to keep a mandrakes leaf in their mouth for an entire month in order to become an animagi? Well there went his interest in becoming one. How did you sleep? How did you eat? Mason was sure that if he started he'd fail over and over again. Yeah, he'd keep his interest on occlumency for the time being. A subject, as the Astronomy professor had told him, only one other student had been reading on. A guy from his own House, prehaps he should make contact with him?
Placing the quill down and pushing the scroll of paper outside, Mason listened to the Professor as the practical part began. Change appearance of the skin? What did that even mean? Before hhe could raise his hand, a Gryffindor girl asked what was on his mind and he lowered his hand to grab his wand. The Ravenclaw kept his attention when the professor would answer the question and at the same time he began practising the wand movement which was a simple swish. Nothing special. He was done very quickly.

Hady simply nodded her head when Professor Riveroll told her that her answer had been correct. She knew it was which was one reason why she had given that answer. The other reason being as no one else had. She wasn't being a priss or stuck up or anything like that she just knew the answer. Years worth or reading and quizzes and potions, exercises, animal transformations...yeah she better know all this.
It didn't keep her from picking up her quill and taking down notes. Not that she needed them but really it couldn't hurt to write it all down. When she had finished she swapped her quill for her wand. Pushing the sleeve of her robe up to her elbow there was then a swish of movement from her wand moving over her arm, "Mutare Pellem." Clearly and firmly while picturing the change of her skin in her head. If you didn't picture the change, feel the change, know you could accomplish the change it wouldn't happen.
Now the question was true here. Even though she had done this spell many many times before while reading herself for her transformation had it worked this time?

Professor Riveroll really WAS the raccoon occupying her desk earlier.
Owen watched in awe as the lady Professor transformed into a human and began class like it was nobody's business. BAM. Booyah! It was so cool and Owen was still in some sort of disbelief at the live preview of today's topic that he wasn't able to organize his thoughts to answer the woman's first question. His peers pretty much summed up everything though. Were they going to learn how to become animagi? ASDFGHJKL!
But it sounded like the whole process was...hard. Hold a leaf in your mouth for an entire month? Training for months to years and you won't even get to choose what animal you could transform into?
Owen was having second thoughts now. Nonetheless, he still thought it was a pretty awesome ability. Hats off to their Professor and to some of his classmates who seemed like they were animagi themselves too.
He flipped onto the indicated page and scanned the words on it as the Professor spoke it. Gulp. Too many preparations and risks were involved. It all sounded so complicated. If they were going to train how to be one, he was sure he won't be able to achieve it in one go. Thankfully they weren't doing that. Instead they were going to learn a skin changing spell. Owen breathed a sigh of relief as he unholstered his wand and muttered the incantation, "Mutare Pellem." Then swish swish swish.

Transfiguration, like Potions is the part of the logical arts. Such subject required focus, determination, patience, and precision. That’s why the raven-haired boy immediately jotted down the valuable notes that appeared before them. He’s unsure whether or not to give it a try given that it is risky business and the fact that he’s just in his third year. Uagadou students are trained at age 14 so he still has a few more months to think this through.
After he wrote everything down, including the incantation, Jace raised his ink-stained hand and waited for the professor to acknowledge him. “Professor? What does the moon and lightning have to do with the whole process? Is it because...the two elements have pure, undiluted magical powers? And...why not the sun?” he said retracting his hand back and waited for the professor’s answer.
As he did so, Jace decided on the type of skin he wanted to have. Hopefully it wouldn’t tear his sleeve into pieces. “Mutare Pellem...” and a good swish movement with his hand while he held his quill.

Now that she was hearing this part of the lecture...there WERE things ringing a bell. Dot had shared a lot of her animagus process with her over the terms, particularly the mandrake leaf bit, but most of the other steps elicited nothing more than a glazed over awestruck expression on the Hufflepuff's pale features. Which really just solidified that this particular branch of magic was far from her reach. Far far faaaaaaaaaaar away. It sometimes made her feel like a bit of a disappointment to the Skeeter name - although she never had actual confirmation that daddy was an animagus himself - in that she was such rubbish with Transfiguration in general.
Perhaps it skipped a generation?
...........................................
New thoughts.
Thoughts about changing her skin as it were. Once she had finished writing down all those steps....Good Merlin. But now thoughts were back to changing her skin...transfiguring it into another shape and, given the topic of animagi, she could only assume this meant animal "skin" ....... which caused the seventh year's stomach to drop as some rather unsavory images of how this spell could possibly go wrong for her projected vividly in her imagination.
Too vividly.
............meep.
Deciding that oh-so-casually waiting for clarification on what Charlotte and Olivia were inquiring about seemed like a worthy reason to not just dive right in to complete mortification - because adding to her notes was very important - Paige settled for practicing the incantation quietly to herself.
And the swish movement was fluid enough for her given charmswork, although she did practice that a few times separately just to humor herself. And buy a bit more time.

Turning into an animal at will sounded like an interesting talent to posess, but in Aslan's opinion that was all it was. A talent and nothing more. She could see no benefits of turning into an animal that she couldn't obtain through easier and more subtle magic. Resting her head on her palm, Aslan watched Professor Riveroll and her classmates as they went on to discuss the subject, many repeating each other as the topic turned to registered and unregistered animagi.
It was hardly exhilarating for the brunette, who's mind had begun to shift to thoughts of other methods for gleaning information or swimming to the bottom of the ocean... Or even flight. Voldemort had flown. How had he? What sort of magic had that been? Dark, certainly it must have been, but where was the spell rooted? Charms? Transfiguration? This was another question for Hirsch.
She wrote it down, crossing out the letters on top of her page marking it as transfiguration work and relabeling it as the mechanics of magical flight.
Mechanics, that made her think of physics and physics lead to thoughts of one Brian Woods, uncomfortable enough as the connection currently was to the impatient brunette, she realized that if anyone could help her better understand physics in correlation to magic it was none other than the Hufflepuff Prefect. Biting her lip, Aslan sat back in her seat as her expression turned less dreamy and more thoughtful.

Harvey busily copied down what the Professor was telling them and writing on the board about Animagi. He would so love to be one. Nobody in his family was - that he knew of, anyway. But it seemed like such a useful skill to have - and- what would he be?
Forcing his mind back to the classroom, he just caught the final instructions about a spell to chance one's skin. Hmm, the swish movement looked simple enough...
"Mutare Pellem," he said, switching his wand gently. "Mutare Pellem...Mutare Pellem...Mutare Pellem..." he continued.
But... how exactly did this spell work? He was glad that a classmate had just asked that question, hopefully they'd get a bit more detailed directions soon...

Thank Merlin for loud Gryffindors. Nat tried to listen to the lecture and tried to take notes, but was the professor talking fast or was she just not hearing her correctly? Happy Birthday Natalia you stink at listening. Goodness that couldn't be it. She knew she was a daydreamer, but she was sure she hadn't missed the demonstration. Usually there was one, but maybe she had let her eyes slip to the window or to another place where she rather be celebrating.
She glanced at Silas, "Did you get that? Like what we are doing?" Changing their skin, but how? She had a cute outfit to put on later and she didn't want her skin messed up for it. Her eyes moved back to the front of the room before she glanced around seeing some of the others getting started. Maybe they would know what's going on, especially Hady who did this stuff.

Being an animagi seemed intense. No.. beyond intense.. insane! You had to hold a leaf in your mouth for a month? What about eating? What about kissing? You couldn't very well kiss anyone with a leaf in your mouth..
Okay.. so strike that off the list of things she was going to do with her life..
Fwoopers.. that was crazy and took dedication. She she new respect for Hady now.. cause Merlin..
And now they had a spell that would change their skin? What would it do to their skin? Would she get fur? Or like.. scales?
She bit her lip as she took out her wand and started to repeat the spell. " Mutare Pellem,Mutare Pellem,Mutare Pellem. " she repeated softly as she made sure to get the pronunciation right.
Listening with wide eyes Leesha quickly made her notes and wondered if it really was possible to do all the things for such a transformation, it sounded so hard! But… More important, were student’s allowed to do such a thing? She was already thinking about what she could do if she herself could turn into a animal and how cool it would be!
Leesha’s face well when she heard that you needed to have permission to do such a thing and she sighed. Of course, all the cool things were forbidden to do without permission from somebody else but… She still thought that it would be a cool thing so she kept this whole subject in mind.
Alright, time to concentrate again on the lesson but… Why change her skin? She didn’t wanted to have hair on her face like a animal! No way! No fecal hair for Leesha! She already was thinking about herself with a zebra colored pattern on her face and she grimaced. “Eh, professor? In what are we changing our skins?” She asked a little warily.
Now that was a lot of talking. Henry was still rather distracted with his mutant doodling that he wasn't really paying all that much attention to the actual process of becoming an animagus, mostly because he wasn't really interested in doing so. And it was a whole lot of information at once. Of course that didn't mean he wasn't listening, just not completely processing everything.
He paused in his doodling to look up as the professor mentioned the spell that they'd be learning. Cool! He did like spellwork and changing one's skin sounded interesting.. as long as it was temporary... but he immediately had a whole bunch of questions. The first question was how, exactly, would it change. Was it simply a matter of envisioning what you wanted the effect to be or something else? But as that was asked by Charlotte, he wouldn't repeat the question. It would have been really cool if the professor showed them, just so he knew what it did and could make sure he was doing it properly, but he could also watch his classmates do it too, he supposed. Had any of the older students tried this one before? He saw a few of them get started, though he couldn't tell if they were just practicing from where he was sitting.
But he did want to add on to the questions that were asked, so he raised his hand. "And also, how long does the effect last? Do you just end the spell with Reverto, or another incantation?" He knew that was typically the reversal spell for most Transfiguration spells, but sometimes there were exceptions. "Or does it eventually wear off?"
And as for actually doing the spell, he'd wait until some of the questions were clarified. But he did write down the incantation in his notes, and tried to pronounce it aloud a few times, just for practice. "Mutare Pellem.. Mutare Pellem.." And then a little wand swish.

Lots of people had questions, which took the pressure off Katy to ask some of the ones that rose in her mind as she took up her wand. And apparently Henry had ALL the questions, which made her snort quietly under her breath. She swished her wand back and forth over her non-wand arm, practicing the motion she'd need to cast.
"Mutare... wait." Katy flicked her wand hand up in the air and waved it. Question question quest... accidental sparks. Whoops. "Professor! Can you use a sticking charm on the mandrake leaf? Or does that nullify the effect?"
Cringing at the idea of permanent mutation if he messed up, Jasper figured that becoming an animagi was something that he wasn't going to attempt. But, knowing the steps of becoming one could potentially be useful in the future, so despite that he quickly jotted down a heading, and all the information that was on the board.
Taking a note of what their professor was telling them, he tilted his head to the side slightly, unsure if he even wanted to try this. He'd also quickly written down the name of the spell and the information their teacher had given so far. A student raised the question that was already bothering him.
What did this spell do?
Because he did not want to do this if for some reason it ended up permanently giving him scales or fur. Even colours were something the Ravenclaw didn't want to risk.

She had known she was right, and she had also known that there had been no reason for Professor Riveroll to have said her answer wasn’t relevant. Brooklyn had given the response a slight nod, however, still not particularly bothering to take notes on the Animagus information. They weren’t learning it, and she wasn’t inclined on trying to become one. If she had been, she’d seek the information on her own, and besides, copying down information that was probably in their textbook or at least a book somewhere seemed like work. Instead, she’d only taken a quill out when the discussion had turned to a different spell.
One that in ways reminded her a little of the spell she’d used at Halloween to give herself the appropriate hair color to portray Cersei, but then was different too. She doubted anyone would use a skin-changing spell for normal cosmetic purposes, unless it could be used to vanish blemishes. It seemed more complicated than that, though, even before other students had started asking a lot of questions. She had stayed quiet, however. No reason to ask when the answers would be given either way.
Instead, she wrote down the incantation and relevant information for casting the spell, exchanging her quill for her wand after a moment. Once that was done, she idly practiced the swish motion a few times silently. Obviously that wasn’t anything too complicated. Setting her wand on her desk, she glanced at her notes. “Mutare pellem,” she said softly, repeating it several times before she felt like she had the pronunciation down. Failure wasn’t an option.

The steps and difficulty for becoming an animagus, though intense, didn't bother her. Not one bit. It was her dream and nothing was going to prevent her from realizing it. Nothing. Besides, she knew this all before. So nope, still determined. What would her animal be? Hads was dying to know. In her gut, she felt it would be a lioness, but at the same time, she was also fully aware that that was potentially just wishful thinking. Ugh, why did they have to wait until fourth year to begin?
Okay, no. She understood why they did. Something she hadn't really understood until late last term, which, she had to begrudgingly admit, made Ichihara right. She had been too young and immature for it then.
And, oh. A new spell. This was Hadley's chance to impress Professor Riveroll. Eagerly, the third year pulled out her wand and promptly set it aside. She would practice the incantation first. Taking out her quill, Hadley quickly jotted down notes on animagi and the new spell, including phonetic pronunciation. Now it was time to practice the words. "Mutare pellum...pellem. Mutare pellem. Mutare pellem. Mutare pellem."

Happy enough to practice wand movement and incantation, separately at least, Char went ahead and began swishing her wand while she waited for the answers to the blast of curious questions that had come from the class. Good to know it wasn't just her who couldn't help herself but ask! SWISH SWISH.
.... ok there was only so much swishing you could do.
"Mutare Pellum!" Gosh it was nice when incantations made sense though. "Mutare Pellum!" Semantically speaking anyways. "Mutare Pellum!"
SWISH SWISH.

Mmmm... So this was interesting. Skin spell to make your skin change. Cool. There was wand movement practicing that needed to be done. Just a swish. Kat could hand that. Swish Swish.
Swish.
Then there was the incantation Mutare Pellum that was the thing with incantations those had to be spot on when speaking them. All of that swishing and other wand movement practice would be such a waste if you wasn't saying the spell right. IE Nothing was going to happen but maybe big kabooms. MAYBE.
"Mutare Pellum.... Mutare Pellum!" It was easy enough, but maybe again. "Mutare Pellum.... Mutare Pellum!"

Well, that was okay. The professor was super busy helping everyone, and Olivia, who didn't have a clue, felt it was a good enough job to practice on her own a bit. Maybe... if she just memorized how the spell was supposed to go, it would come a bit easier. It had been said more than once that practice made perfect, you know?
The first bit.... Swishing. She, of course, knew how to properly swish. It was a wand motion she implemented in her charms work, which actually came much easier than all this. This being Transfiguration. So, waving her wand about, Liv kept her wrist lax, which helped with general swishing motions. To be honest, it was kinda like the levitation charm. Swish and Flick... but without the flick bit.
.... But the incantation.
.... Mutare pellem."Mutare pellem." It was easy to say. Wow, and getting it out didn't feel that awkward to her mouth. It wasn't like some of the more Latin-derived incantations, anyway. That was most of her problem. She just wasn't that great at the more complicated pronunciations. Because.... Well, they were super complicated. Easy to get all tongue-tied on. They took loads of concentration and her wandwork suffered due to it... Not to mention her focus. That was probably why she failed so hard at it. She was always so all over the place.
"Mutare pellem." Swish. SWISH. Swiiiiiish.
