Default Potions Lesson 1

Thank you Stefan

Art was sitting at his desk with Madame Curie in one hand. The other hand was giving her a good scratch. There was quite a strong smell of menthol surrounding Art, whose knees were playing up. He'd rubbed some cream onto them every morning since the beginning of term, but he was quite used to the smell. If you have a cold or a blocked nose, you might find your nasal passage and sinuses suddenly clear. On Art's table up the front are solid coloured containers full of the ingredients, all of Art's equipment already out and organised, as well as a vial of fluorescent yellow potion.

The door is wide open, and the room is nice and warm. On one wall, hooked over the pegs, are your lab coats. Some are still white, some are unfortunately pink (owing to Miffy). Come in, take a seat, and get ready.

SPOILER!!: OOC

  • Come on in!
  • The story behind some of the lab coats being PINK are thanks to the incident in the laundry. This happened IC about a month ago, and as the coats are used to protect your uniforms, they probably aren't washed too regularly. SOME of them were in the laundry and turned pink, others were ether washed before, after, or not yet after the incident. So feel free to grab a pink one if you want.
  • Please read over Art's guidelines
  • The ingredients are in solid containers, so you can't see what's inside them but you can come up and have a look at the potion and have a guess if you wish
  • Chat amongst yourselves! We will get started in approximately 22 hours. Opening a little early as I'm a bit unwell and might not be on when I originally planned on opening.
  • For those of you new to the RPG, WELCOME to Potions! IC we are in October, so this isn't our first lesson. We would have had about 2 each week since the beginning of term, so you'll already know Professor Newton and his rat Madame Curie.

Now that the potion was simmering, Rula dropped the alihotsy leaves into the water and glanced at the clock. Okay, twenty minutes from now. Hopefully this wouldn't feel too long.

She had all her ingredients, just needed to measure them out...though it seemed like there were only a few she really needed to. The others were already as they were supposed to be, like the two billywig stings, and others she could do whenever she got to the steps to put it in, like the ones that were just a "pinch" of something, right? So...okay then.

She measured out the 5ml armadillo bile (gross) and the tablespoon of activated charcoal and...that was it? Huh. Well that definitely didn't cover 20 minutes. Merlin's beard.

So for the rest of the time, she alternated between daydreaming and glancing at the clock, and finally, twenty minutes had passed. Maybe not exactly but close enough, right?

She picked the leaves out of the water carefully and turned the fire up a bit to get the water to boil. Once it was, she added the billywig stings and a pinch of erumpent tongue (gross), Scourgify'd her stirrer, and began stirring counter-clockwise. At least this time she had something to do while waiting - and at least it was only ten minutes this time - but her arm did get tired eventually, so she had to quickly switch hands to keep it going.

Finally the ten minutes were up, so she turned the fire down a bit again to let the mixture cool down. Which also just seemed like MORE waiting, and so more daydreaming. So she stuck a thermometer in the water and did just that.

Eventually, the thermometer indicated the right temperature, so she took it out. Then she added the 5ml of armadillo bile (still gross), stirred five times counter-clockwise, added the two drops of leech juice, stirred twenty times counter-clockwise, and now it was time to boil again.

Oh, and the potion was a light brown-ish color...so that was a good sign, at least.

After a few minutes of waiting for it to boil again, she pulled out her wand again, moved it in a counter-clockwise circular motion over the cauldron, said, "Garrula lingua," and, once again, brought the potion back to a simmer.

The tablespoon of charcoal was added. She stirred counter-clockwise three times, this time more slowly than before. Then came the pinch of ground bezoar, another counter-clockwise stir, and finally the cauldron was moved off the heat.

Rula turned off the fire and began putting up any leftover ingredients while the potion cooled and lightened. Thank Merlin this was almost all done.

Once all the ingredients were stored away, she stood by her cauldron to watch it continue its turning-into-yellow stuff. Looking pretty good too, thank Merlin.

Then it looked like it was done, so she carefully poured it into the 20ml vials, then labeled one for the professor with her name, house, year, and the potion's name. Then she Scourgify'd her cauldron, and...she was done? Yes? Other than taking the potion, of course.

Once she was done putting the spell on the potion she turned her eyes back to the steps. Crossing out the ones she had already done and looking to what she had left. Her eyes moving to the clock she calculated how much time she had left. Taking a vial she poured a bit of the potion in before the extra ingredients. Marking it she set it aside to continue with the rest of the ingredients.

This potion certainly had lots of steps without the extra two. Grabbing the tablespoon she put the charcoal iinto it and then into her cauldron. Setting it down she stirred three times counter clockwise very slowly. Taking her fingers she grabbed a pinch of ground bezor. Stirring once counterclockwise and pulled it from the heat.

She watched as the color turned very bright yellow and then grew dimmer. Pouring the potion in the vials she marked her name on it and smiled happy to be finished.

Aaaand ten minutes was up says that pinging timer, so Tenacius tapped his cauldron to stop stirring and just set it aside to cool.

Cool cool cool... what is Hadley doing? He just had to be curious with her cauldron because he still remembered what happened the last time. And apparently there some kerflufflepuff over at the table over there. Goodness it was a hoot to watch.

But was his pot cool enough now? Temp gauage says yes, and so did his tactile senses. So in goes his waiting armadillo bile and another tap with his cauldron "Counter clockwise, five times por favor." he says to his magic pot. After that he added in the leech juice too, again repeating the command to the pot with his wand, this time for more stirring. And wudja lookitdat, the potion was starting to change color, light brow it says, so far so good yeah?

And back to the boiler room errr stand for the pot. Wait a while... wait a while.... ohh bubble bubble toil and trouble... its magic time! "Garrula Lingua" he swirls his wand counter clockwise over the pot. Aaand thats it right? Oh yeah simmer down the heat, down down she goes...

Now for the black stuff. He scatters in the measured charcoal into the pot, manually stirring counter clockwise this time. one... two ... three.... and then what?.....or right the bezoar. Sprinkle that in too. One more counter clockwise stir for luck and off the heat she goes!

Once again he was waiting for the thing to cool. He should be seeing some color changes now yeah? Well his potion certainly doesnt look all that brown anymore, but he wasnt sure if he managed to get it yellow enough.

Does it look right? In his potion goes, right into one of the vials. Well ok, it was yellow.... florescent though? What is florescent anyway?

Well they can argue all day about shades of color, but the Gryffindor Ace decided to just bottle up the rest of his potion and submit what he's got

Ruined. Her potion was ruined. Sure they lacewig wings were just in the cauldron for a moment before she scooped them out, but Hadley knew enough by now to know that was all it took. And to think she'd hoped that this would be her first successful potion. Not anymore.

Still, she'd have to finish the potion, so that she could turn something in. Not like it was the first time she'd turned in an unsuccessful potion.

Hads scourgified the lacewig wings away and checked the temperature of the potion. Room temperature. Perfect. She was still gonna finish the potion with the same precision she'd started it with. If nothing else, it would be good practice. Okay, next step. The Armadillo bile. Ew, by the way. That was added and she stirred counter-clockwise, once, twice, three times, four times, and five. Check.

Two drops of Leech juice, stir 20 times. She began to stir, counting off each counter-clockwise stir until she'd reached 20. Check. Potion should now be a light brown color. Hadley glanced into her cauldron. Nope. Her potion was green. Stupid pixies.

With a sigh, Hadley aimed her wand at the burner. "Incendio!" She waited. Once the potion was boiling again, Hadley circled the potion counter-clockwise with her wand. "Garrula lingua!" Check.

One tablespoon of Charcoal. Check. Stirring once, twice, thrice! And now for the pinch of Bezoar. Check. And stirring once. Check. "Finite!" The flame on the burner died away to nothing. Hadley watched as it cooled, turning from a green to a...robins-egg blue.

Welp, her failed potion was done. Sorry, Professor Newton, she wasn't trying this one. Hadley scooped one vial of potion and labelled it.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

After successfully hitting two of the pixies with the immobulus charm, Mason looked at his potions ingredients that were scattered all over his desk and floor. Could he still use these? He had nothing else so he guessed it was the only option.

Praying that the pixies had not touched his cauldron, Mason walked back after cleaning up the mess and putting the ingredients back in their rightful jars and checked inside the cauldron. The color was exactly how he had left it and after checking the steps he had made, he added two drops of leech juice in the potion.

Grabbing the stirrer, the Ravenclaw cleaned up and counted twenty counter-clockwise stirs until the potion had a light brown colour. Next step, boiling the potion…again….what was up with potions and the boiling, cooling and boiling again? Anyways, he waited to he heard and saw the bubbling of the potion and then circled his wand counter-clockwise over the cauldron. “Garrula Lingua” before bringing it down to a simmer. He had no idea the incantation was supposed to do but so far the cauldron had not exploded so that was a good sign.

Now, how many tablespoons of activated charcoal did he have to add? Mason checked his notes, read that it was one tablespoon and not forgetting to clean it and finding the right jar, he added it in. Nearly finished now. Stirring three times counter-clockwise (again) slowly and then he ………Merlin’s Beard he’d forgotten to crush the bezoar!

Summoning his mortar and pestle with a quick incantation and wave of his wand, Mason grabbed a bezoar with his gloved hand and with the pestle he quickly crushed it and then added a pinch of it in to the potion.

Then one last counter-clockwise stir and he was done! Removing the heat and beginning to clean his working area as he waited for the color to turn in to a fluorescent yellow, Mason saw that it stopped lightening up and he grabbed a bottle to put some of his potion in to grade. He grabbed his self-inking quill and labelled one vial for the Professor with his name , house and year on it before grabbed another vial to put some in for his own use.

Perhaps he’d slip some in a pumpkin juice during breakfast? AHEM.

Next She had to stir it three times, slowly and in a counter clock wise motion. That was exactly what she did.

1 Slowly... 2 slowly... 3...slowly.

Adding the ground bezoar into the potion. She was just about finished with this. The next thing she had to do was stir it once. She gave it one last good stir and grabbed her wand to cut the fire underneath off. "Finite." Smiling seeing that it was still a light brown. At least it was still so far so good. She watched as the potion turned from the light brown to the fluorescent yellow, as it cooled off. She was quite impressed with herself. Seeing that the potion had stopped lightening up she wrote on a label, her name, year and house. That was all she needed to write on the label yes?

She got the vials and bottled up the two. Then the rest. She handed in the one with the label in to the professor. Put the rest, except for one. She was going to drink that one. After she got a minute to breathe after all of that stirring.

Knowing a watched pot never boiled, or simmered in this case, Cassie let the cauldron go for a little bit. Instead, she double checked her notes and all her ingredients, moving to retrieve the one she had forgotten in the mix. Oops. Good thing she had checked. Returning to her workstation, she added it to the line-up, checking this time on her cauldron as well. Would you look at that…one simmering cauldron of water. Which meant she could move onto the next step. Stewing the alihotsy leaves.

Five grams of fresh alihotsy leaves went into the simmer water. The Ravenclaw then looked to her watch to see what time it was to figure out what 20 minutes would be as she let it stew along. In the meantime, she scourgified her equipment and measured out stuff that she could, doing exactly what the instructions had said to do, preparing the stuff while she waited. It was better than just starring and watching the simmer anyway so it made sense to use the time.

Eventually the 20 minutes was up and Cass was grateful to move onto something else. She might not be horrible at potions but she also wasn’t the greatest, o too much time meant too much time for stuff to go wrong. Using a clean spoon, she picked out all the leaves from the cauldron. Then she let it return to a boil. That done, in went the two Billywig stings and the pinch of powdered Erumpent tongue. With another glance at her watch, she started a 10 minute timing this time, her scourgified stirring rod in hand as she stirred her potion counter-clockwise continuously.

Next, Owen pointed his wand at the brew, circling it counterclockwise as he muttered the incantation, "Garrula lingua..." That sounded about right. The activated charcoal was added in next, then Owen stirred the brew again thrice in yet another counterclockwise motion slooooooooooooooooooooooowly.

A pinch of ground bezoar. Another stir and then he carefully finite'd the flame.

Almost done!

Owen allowed the mixture to cool as he started cleaning his work station. The spare ingredients went back to their respective containers on the cupboards, as well as the materials after he scourgify'd them. What then was left was only his cauldron of the potion, a ladle, and ten empty 20 ml vials.

When he turned back to look at his potion, it was fluorescent yellow in color. As expected. YES! Success! Owen then bottled up his potion. Ten vials now filled with yellow lined his station as he cleaned up the ladle and the remains of his cauldron. Once done, the badger labeled all ten of them. Then he gathered his things, kept nine of the vials in his bag, and the remaining one he brought to the Professor as he made his way to the exit. "That was a really interesting lesson, sir." With the pixies and whatnot. "Thank you, Professor." Owen said with a slight bow.

Off he went, mulling over when and where and how he could put his nine vials of Babbling Beverage to good use. Hmmm......

Ten minutes up, Cassandra turned down the heat and let the potion cool down. “Scourgify,” she cast on a thermometer she wasn’t sure she had gotten in her earlier cleaning bout before adding it to keep track of the temperature of the liquid. Once satisfied with what the dial was saying, the third year moved on, adding the Armadillo bile before resuming stirring. One…two…three…four…five time counter clockwise. Then in went the leech juice and some more stirring. One, two, three…six, seven, eight…twelve, thirteen, fourteen…twenty times counter clockwise more.

Please be brown…please be brown!

She let out a content sigh as the color seemed mostly right, raising the heat once more to bring everything back to a boil. It was then that all trouble had gone loose. PIXIES!! Cass ducked as they flew around the room, flicking one that caught onto her hair away from her as best she could. Then Professor Newton spoke up, reminding them of one spell she should have remembered. Soon enough it was handled to everyone’s released and the Ravenclaw was cleared to go back to her work.

As she sat down to recover from the excitement, the boiling began once more so she slipped her wand out to cast. “Garrula lingua…” Cassie spoke clearly the incantation as she circled over her cauldron with the tip of her wand. She could only hope it was right as she brought the heat down once more and let the potion drift from boil to simmer. When that was done, one carefully leveled tablespoon of activated charcoal was added, followed by three slow stirs counter clockwise. Then one pinch of ground bezoar and finally one and ONLY one stir counter clockwise before she carefully grabbed the cauldron’s handle with her gloved hand and took it off the heat.

Whew!

Now she just waited as it changed color. Brown…to…yellow.

Done!

Those ones were pretty obvious, being that they were leaves. He pointed to the two powdery looking ones, "This is the powdered erumpent tongue, and this one is the bezoar. See how the bezoar is more brown, but the erumpent tongue is more pink? And... uhh the activated charcoal is this black one, the Billywig stings look like little sticks here, and the Armadillo Bile here is the bright green one, and the leech juice is a... a sort of red-black one. Bit confusing between that and the charcoal." He looked up with a smile. "Some of them take a little while to distinguish between though, but you'll get better with practice."
Olivia was, of course, awfully apologetic about disrupting him, but she was also serious about doing this right today. No half-butting from her! No, sir!

Following his careful explanation of the ingredients he had laid out before him, Liv reached for and lifted each container in turn... if that was okay? She was simply getting better acquainted with them... And was there a more effective way than getting a closer look? The small blonde certainly thought not. It was also really too bad that she hadn't thought to bring parchment with her. Liv was more than sure that she'd forget every bit of what he was saying. EVEN THOUGH, she was paying especially close attention in the moment. Undivided attention... but Liv was very much the type that required written affirmation.

"Thank you for your assistance, Professor." This was said as she began collecting the different items for herself and Tak which would most certainly require more than one trip. So, there was a bit more trekking involved. Three trips to be precise, but eventually all the required ingredients had been safely transported... and thank the gawds that those stupid pixies had left. She usually wouldn't call any creatures (or anyone, really) this, but they were getting in her way. NOT ACCEPTABLE TODAY! Hmph.

... And Tak had waited on her with the water. That was okay! If he wasn't comfortable doing that part, she could definitely do Aguamenti herself. Let's see... She'd already cleaned everything, so... With the assistance of a liquid measuring cup and her wand, she went about getting the water added to her cauldron, which was probably the easiest part of any potion for her. Water and heating. Hard to flub those two things up.

Speaking of heating... Once the water came to a simmer, or what she assumed a simmer was... (That was when the water was just below boiling, right?) ...... Er, right. When that happened, it was time for those leave Professor Newton had introduced to her. He'd been very kind and generous to do that.... Anyway, consulting her notes, which had been kinda smudged up when those creatures had attacked, Liv saw that they needed to be stewed for 20 minutes. That was an awfully long time to heat leaves, but she wasn't the expect so. Taking his word for it, she sorted out the leaves and added them in, looking for a way to mark the time. Was it bad to OVERheat them? Would that ruin her potion? COULD SHE STAY FOCUSED FOR 20 MINUTES?! That was the question, wasn't it?

Ah, 'Prepare other ingredients while waiting'... Good idea, instructions!

Pinching, pouring, and weighing the rest of the lot, she set each additional ingredient off to the side, hoping she could get through this spell that was supposed to be preformed. Guh, okay, so... Liv wasn't the greatest at learning magic. DADA had always been a breeze, seeing as she got so enthusiastic about it, but even that took LOADS of extra practice and concentration. Honestly, she'd done so well with dueling because of practice. With this 'garrula lingua' spell, however... Olivia had never heard of it. Of course, THE SHOW MUCH GO ON. The blonde would resolve herself to TRY, but the probability of success wasn't that assuring.

... Had it been 20 minutes, yet?

Using a spotted ladle (that was clean), she dipped and drained whatever leaf particles she could find... and turned the burner back up. It wasn't supposed to SIMMER this time. A BOIL was needed. Haha, a stray thought, how hilarious would a dramatic reading of these instructions be, though? Haha.

Ack! IT WAS BOILING. Now, to add the dried billywig stings and erumpent tongue... Check. Counter-clockwise stirring.... Er? That was when it was to right to left, right...? AHEM, CHECK. Also, it was hard to keep up with stirring for the whole ten minutes. Geez, this potions business was hardwork. Mad respect for YOU, Professor.

Now... for it to cool. There was probably a way to speed this along, but with how inexperienced she felt in regards to brewing as a whole, Liv didn't want to risk it. So, twiddling her thumbs a bit, and pulling at the tips of her hair, she waiting for the potion to cool off. It was hard waiting when one was so restless and eager to get a thing done. AS SHE WAS, ahem... but eventually, there was no longer steam coming from her cauldron, and this was viewed as a good sign. Time to add more things...

The armadillo bile, as had been pointed out to her, was bright green; even thought it was a disgusting potions substance, she still found the color radiant and gorgeous. It resembled freshly cut grass, actually, though it did NOT smell like freshly cut grass. Just FYI. Lol, after adding that in and doing a bit more stirring, she did the same with the leech juice. Two drops. Into the cauldron!

Pause. Wouldn't leech juice just be blood? Or was it a juice complied of mashed up leeches? That would be a question to ask later... if she recalled it... Ha, and we all understood that to be wishful thinking. Also, TWENTY MORE STIRRING STROKES. Merlin's bum! Her flipping arm was ACHING from all this workout it was getting, but also... the potion was this... kinda nude color. You know, MAKEUP nude. Not... Hehe, anyway.

... AND BACK TO A BOIL. WHY DID HER MOTHER LOVE POTIONS?! This was kinda stressful. Well, okay, nevermind. That made all the sense, actually.

Liv was not at all confident about this spell, but as she'd thought earlier, THE SHOW MUST GO ON. So, here she was... CENTER STAGE. WAND IN HAND. All she had to do was believe that she could do it, and it would work out. Hopefully. Psh, why was she stressing over this again? That was going to make it NOT work. Bless.

Maneuvering her wand as the instructions stated, hopefully (OLIVIA WAS TRYING HER BEST), she clearly stated the incantation. CLEARLY. With feeling, as well.... and quickly lowered the burners heart. How was she to know the spell worked, though? Reading through the instructions again, which was making her eyes hurt... just being honest, she sighed. There was no indicators on success. Welp, HOPEFULLY, it had been right. Haha, guess we'll seeeee.

Also, what in the heck was activated charcoal? How as that different from regular charcoal? Had Professor Newton laid some magic on it? Who knew?! Anyway, that was added. More stirring. Pinch of ground bezoar. MOAR STIRRING... but only once. So, that wasn't too bad. HER ARM FELT AS THOUGH IT COULD FALL FROM HER BODY AT ANY MOMENT! /dramatic

Anyway, with it pulled away from the heat, she had to wait and see if it underwent a color change, right? That was the only indication that today had been a success. ONLY INDICATION. Wow, how sucky would it be to go through all those steps only to find that you've messed something up along the way? This would not be a good day if this happened to her. So, please....PLEASE.... pleeeeeeeeease turn that funky yellow color. PLEASE.

Oh, awesome! IT HAD!

HA. HAAAAAAAAAAAAA! IN. YO. FACE!

All that was left was bottling, right?! SHE COULD'VE JUMPED ATOP HER WORK STATION AND SANG!

Art nodded knowingly to Miss Griffel. "It's a bit disheartening sometimes, when things go wrong. I still get potions wrong, too, so it's not just you." If that made her feel any better. He hoped so, he hated seeing his students give up.

At the end, when Miss Griffel handed in her orange vial, Art gave a little smile. "Of course you can! The student labs are-are open all the time. If you want some help just pop into my office first. Or... I m-might already be in the lab anyway." He'd help if she wanted it. He watched her with a hint of suspense as she drank the vial. When it became obvious it didn't work he gave a little shrug. "You did a good job today, a very good job. Those pixies messed a lot of things up. Here," he said, getting one of his vials and giving it to her. "One I made earlier, in case you want to try it out." Have fun with it, babble along.

She was simply getting better acquainted with them... And was there a more effective way than getting a closer look? The small blonde certainly thought not. Art smiled at Miss Phillips, who had asked for help in identifying the ingredients. "Not a problem," he said. "I'm glad you asked when you weren't sure, rather than just adding things blindly." He had a little laugh at the thought of a DISASTER that could have proved. And once she'd gone back and brewed her potion, he was smiling at the sight of the YELLOW liquid, and gave her a thumbs up.

"Thank you Miss Andrews," Art said to the young Slytherin who handed in an immaculately coloured vial. He placed it carefully with the others.

"Hmm... good work today Miss Kettleburn," he said with a smile, placing her vial in the pile.

"Wonderful work today Miss Paton, that looks very good." It was yellow, after all. He would say it was very, VERY close to the colour of his own potion.

"Well done Miss Botros, it looks good," he said when he added her vial of yellow potion to the rest.

"Wonderful job Miss Franks-Mundie," Art said, adding her potion to the pile. "Will you try both of them and let me know what taste difference there is?" he asked. He'd add the findings to his notes on the potion, crediting Miss Franks-Mundie, of course.

"Fantstic work today Mr Salander," He said to the young Lion, adding his vial to the pile.

Art thought he had the practice to hold his face steady when a potion was handed in that was obviolsy the wrong colour. As was this case with Miss Denaker. Her progress had been significant over the last year, but with the mayhem of the pixies, he thought, something had gone wrong. He took the vial from Miss Denaker and added it to the rest. "Good effort Miss Denaker," he said, very genuinely.

"Wonderful job today Mr Winslow, thank you for your-your uhh help with the pixies. Wonderful use of defensive spells." He added the vial with the others.

Miss Delgado was next to finish, and Art took her magnificently fluorescent yellow potion and added the vial with the others. "Fantastic work today Miss Delgado," he said to her with a big smile.

Mr Montezor finished next. The lovely fluorescent yellow potion was placed with the others. "Oh well th-thank you for your very hard work Mr Montezor. I hope the pixies didn't hurt you at all." He knew there was some commotion with Miss Skeeter and Mr Montezor but he hadn't been sure of what. He was busy with other things. What a mess the lesson had been, but thankfully everyone was leaving at the end of class, and not carted off to the hospital wing half way through.

"Good job Miss McNally," Art said to the young Ravenclaw who had finished with her yellow potion.

"Okay everyone," Art said with a clap. "Time to hurry up and get the potions finished. If you're all done you can leave, if you're still brewing, I'll write you notes for your next classes if you need." That was, if they wanted their potions graded. If they didn't, they were free to go now too. But with the pixies and everything, he thought it best to offer some more time to those who needed it.

OOC: Lesson is finished! Thank you so much everyone - this was such a fun lesson for me to RP in!
If you've not finished, I'll give you a few more hours to get your posts done. I'll close it within 16 hours or so

After what seemed like ages - once again mildly forgetting how to breathe while watching in anticipation of a correct color change - Paige exhaled a bit louder than intended when she saw the shade fluorescent yellow emerge. Oh thank MERLIN. How many vials was this supposed to make? Ten was it? Getting out her supplies once more, grabbing ten individual vials and corks, Paige began to carefully ladle the brew into each. Spills were, thankfully, at a minimum this time. Just a drop here or there on the table which were easily taken care of with a wave of her wand. Her internship at St. Mungo's was helping a tiny bit with handling her nerves under pressure...although she was a long way from the steady hands of the healers she shadowed. Especially after that one splinching incident which still tended to haunt her nightmares every now and then.

Once her cauldron was empty, Paige got out her quill and labeled one of her ten vials neatly to hand in to Professor Newton.

Reaching down and rubbing her knees again, as they were now growing a bit stiff, the seventh year hobbled her way up to the front and set her sample on the professor's desk with a small smile.

"I will, professor," she assured him. She was fairly certain she had vials of things in her room still, practice brews from her healing seminars so she would not need to burden either the professor or the healer with such a minor injury. Hopefully. If only Hogwarts didn't have so many stairs she would feel a bit more confident. "Sorry about all the wasted armadillo bile." She knew of a certain Ravenclaw who was probably stewing in his seat over all that. "Thank you for the lesson and especially your patience."

Heading back to her seat now, Paige caught Owen's eye as she made her way back to her station and offered him a small smile as well. She still felt bad for causing him to have to start his potion completely over, pesky pixie business aside. Back at her own seat now, Paige half collapsed on to her stool and set to cleaning up and putting everything away before packing up her bag.

It was possibly the best feeling in the world, OUTSIDE OF DANCING AND EATING, that Olivia had ever experienced. Getting something RIGHT and doing well.... who'd have thought, amright?!

Also... she was supposed to fill TEN vials?! One for the professor, one for her right now, and then EIGHT to spare. EIGHT. Now, whatever would SHE, a smol Gryffindor of almost fourteen, do with EIGHT spare vials of Babbling Beverage?!

Whistling while she worked, Snow White style, Liv went about collecting all the necessary bits for the job (vials, corks, stickum labels), and quickly scrawled out her full name, year, house, the date, and potion's name on one of the tags. Since only one was going to Professor Newton, she simply labeled the rest with "Babbling Beverage" and the date. Common sense told her that these concoctions could go bad (LIKE MILK), so it was important to note when they were made. For expiration purposes.

Lolz, Liv idly wondered if a potion could grow more potent over time... like certain adult beverage were supposed to.

After dropping her potion in the basket, she offered a wave. "Thank you for your help again. I promise I'll get these ingredients memorized." OR SHE'D TRY REALLY HARD TO, anyway.

When Dalton's timer went off after ten minutes, he stopped his stirring and removed his cauldron from the heat, flicking his wand to lower the flame to a less dangerous level. Checking the temperature every few minutes, he waited until his thermometer registered 22°C and then added the armadillo bile before stirring slowly five times counter clockwise. A few drops of leech juice went in next, and as he stirred twenty times, still counter clockwise, watching the potion turn slowly brownish in colour.

With another wave of his wand, Dalton upped the flame and pushed his cauldron back onto the boil, waiting until bubbles started breaking the surface before raising his wand. "Garrula Lingua," he muttered, before turning down the flame and watching the potion start to simmer.

Measuring out his levelled tablespoon of charcoal, stirring counter clockwise thrice, adding a pinch of ground bezoar and then stirring once again took very little time, and it wasn't long before Dalton was extinguishing the flame and watching the potion get gradually yellower as it cooled. Satisfied that it was at the right temperature and colour, he ladled it into the ten vials, putting nine into his bag and then labeling another. He quickly cleared up his desk, before dropping his labeled vial at the Professors desk with a nod of thanks.

Juno's spell didn't quite reach the pixies pulling at his hair and Henry wasn't sure if that was a bad thing or not. The fourth year wouldn't want to be in direct line of her spell anyway, because he didn't want to be accidentally immobilized. He had enough problems over here with his upturned cauldron and pixies pulling his hair.

But it appeared that it did work on most of the pixies, and the rest seemed to either be bored or had enough fun, since they were soon on their way. And thankfully out of his hair, which was probably a mess now. He ran a hand through his hair, hoping to fix it again. And yes, professor, he did know Immobulus, he just hadn't been quick enough with his cauldron and he wasn't about to point his wand at his own head, hoping to catch a pixie in his spell casting. Not when he'd have just as likely a chance of casting it on himself at that angle.

So, back to the potion. Or, more accurately, starting the potion over, since the contents of his cauldron were all over the table and dripping on the floor. But a few quickly cast Tergeo's and Scourgify's cleaned up the mess and he was on his way again. Henry filled his cauldron with water from his wand and lit the burner again. Taking the time he needed to wait for the water to start simmering, the Hufflepuff once again went to the potions store cupboard to gather at least some of the ingredients. He remembered he needed a bunch of alihotsy leaves and billywig stings, and then something about charcoal and a bezoar. The rest he'd have to get once he got to that step.

When he got back to his table, the water was already simmering. Dropping in the leaves, he glanced up at the clock to time about 20 minutes. Right. That was a long time. He supposed he could prepare other ingredients like it said up on the board during that time, but.. there wasn't any chopping to do.. or..? Oh. He could probably get the rest of the ingredients while he waited. Then maybe organize them in neat rows or something like that. Erumpent tongue? He wondered just how that kind of ingredient was acquired as he walked up to get the rest of his ingredients.

He had just collected everything else when he heard the professor speak again. What? Class was over already? Henry looked around to see that most of the class seemed to be finishing up and handing in their phials. But.. he had to start completely over after those pixies ruined his potion. So unfair. Yeah, he'd definitely be staying after class to finish. Sigh. Placing the rest of the ingredients at his table, he glanced up at the clock before propping his chin up on his hand as he stared at the simmering leaves in his cauldron. Ten more minutes.

Cleaning up her area, Nat put the vials into her bag as the professor started to dismiss class. "I will sir. I'll try them in my free spot today and let you know." She could maybe even do one in the afternoon and one after dinner. Either way it would be interesting. She was kind of excited to try them.

Pulling her bag over her shoulder she headed to the front of the room. "Thanks for the lesson professor, I'll let you know soon about the taste testing." Giving a last smile she headed out of the room.

I'll close it within 16 hours or so
Well, at least she would be able to take the potion when she wanted now. That was probably the only blessing of the pixies. "That is very true sir." She gave him a small smile. "I do hope the armadillo bile didn't harm you at all." Juno went back to her desk and grabbed her bag.

"Thank you for an excellent lesson, sir." She said with a smile on her way out the door. There was never a dull moment at Hogwarts.

With his thumb and forefinger, he grabbed a little of the powdered bezoar and sprinkled it into the measuring cup, showing her that it was an eighth of a spoon. Mostly. "Just have a practice with this if you want, or you can just measure it out with the spoon."

EHEHEHEHEEEEEEE!

Nodding at the Professor as he explained about how much a teaspoon was, that made much more sense. So basically it wasn't very much. "Thanks Professor," Skylar beamed, as she took the spoon from him and practiced measuring it about. And once she had an idea, she took her thumb and forefinger and pinched the amount she'd collected with her spoon just to get a greater understanding for what it felt like between her teeny fingers.

That was when her pinching exercise got interrupted by PIXIES!!! Panicking, the second year's spoon she'd been holding flew up in the air as she went and dove under her workstation out of sheer panic and impulse. She was no Gryffindor, that was for sure. Once the chaos seemed to stop, thanks to her much braver classmates and Professor, the second year stood up from under her desk and tried to uncover her place on her potion brewing and regain focus.

Remove the leaves. Using a slotted spoon with slightly finer holes, Sky stuck it into her cauldron and removed some leaves, tapping it gently on towel and then went and retrieved more leaves from her potion. Three times later, peering in, she felt she'd retrieved them all and waited for the water to boil. Taking a pinch of the erumpent tongue that she'd crushed, she let it fall into her cauldron along with the 2 billywig stings. Stirring it counter-clockwise, she continued to try to focus, though she couldn't help but wonder WHO let the pixies out during a lesson?! Only thing she could think of was Miffy, but Miffy was a Poltergal, and well it just wasn't she kind of ghostlike? Something didn't add up and Sky just felt like maybe an accomplice was involved... not Newton; he'd been teaching a couple years now.

Remove the cauldron from the heat, she waited about ten minutes for it to cool and then added the 5 ml armadillo bile, stirring five more times counter-clockwise. Two drops of leech juice and then twenty - or so - counter-clockwise stirs. The potion appeared almost translucent but slightly dirty, so it was okay, right? Light brown was a slightly dirty color?

Boiling her potion again, she then blinked at the next step. Incantations in potions!? WHAT WAS THIS!? Biting her lip, she silently muttered 'garrula lingua' a couple times under her breath to try to master the incantation. And then when she felt she was ready, she picked her wand up, circled it once counter-clockwise over her cauldron, "Grrula lingua" and then lowered the heat.

Adding a level tablespoon of activated charcoal, followed by three more clockwise stirs and then a pinch of bezoar, she stirred once once counterclockwise before removing the cauldron from the heat source and watched it change colors. It was kind of a sandy color, though maybe slightly more yellow. Another minute or two later, when the sandy color didn't change anymore, she poured her potion into one vial for her professor and one for herself, which she didn't ingest just yet. She figured she might be better off saving it for ingesting later in case she royally messed up so she wouldn't embarrass herself too much. Labeling the one for Professor Newton with "Skylar Diggory, 2nd year, Slytherin" she went and dropped it off at his desk. JUST IN TIME she finished!!

"Thanks Professor," Sky said, as she went back to clean up her workstation before packing up to head out.
